Co-OPed by Khasinkonia

Welcome to 'Prefeton', my latest attempt at a character RP. This RP is a coming-of-age story where you will write a high-school aged character who will gradually develop extraordinary powers while, at the same time, you unravel the mysteries as to what makes your home town so... unusual. This is not a sandbox RP though the actions of your characters will have ramifications.

At the start of the RP your character's powers will be relatively weak; however, there will be major time-skips which it is assumed that you have improved your current powers or developed new ones.

The RP will be set on the fictional Prefer Isle, dominated by the small town of Prefeton where your character lives which sits off the coast of Maine.

If you've RPed with me before you will know that I have a habit of writing my RPs together, and this one is no exception (and will fit into the extended 'Andromedaverse'), though there is no need whatsoever to go and read any of my other extant RPs or do any background reading - in fact, I would thoroughly recommend that you don't!

Finally, the RP will remain open to newcomers right up until the final chapter and I am always happy to give you a potted summary of what is going on.

SETTING

Prefeton

Prefeton has a population of just over 12,000 people and a high school, which your character attends with a roll of about 600 students. The town is small enough that most people have some idea of who most other people are and you can reasonably assume that your character knows the others in the RP.

Prefeton is a relatively wealthy small town, with no family going without to any great extent. There is a ferry that takes people to the mainland which operates sporadically, though the locals do not tend to leave the island very often and supplies arrive regularly enough that people do not need to do without.

Geographically, the island is roughly circular in shape with a length and breath each of about 2 miles. The town takes up about half of this space with the remainder being deciduous woodland. Walking tracks lead out into this area, though the only road away from the main town is a gravel road that follows the coast. There is no large wildlife on the island (no deer, wolves, bears or the like), though there are plenty of birds, rodents and other small wildlife.

Ostensibly the town's main industry is fishing, though there are rumours of some kind of shady Government facility on the far side of the island, away from the town. There is definitely a fenced off area which is patrolled by military police and guard dogs, though nobody is entirely clear as to what goes on in there. The money that flows through the town also seems unusual for a town whose main industry appears to be fishing though people don't generally ask too many questions about it.

What is going on in Prefeton

It is the end of August, the summer holidays are drawing to a close and you have been invited to a perfectly normal beach party...

You, and a number of other high-school aged people in Prefeton have, over the last few weeks begun to realise you have developed extraordinary powers. You may have already realised this and experimented a little at home, or something might happen at this party to 'set you off' for the first time. Either way, your life is going to be forever changed.

THE RULES

And because it seems important to write these out, here are a few rules for making a better society:

  • Decisions
My word and the word of Khasinkonia (and anyone else who gets apointed as Co-OP) is binding. If you don’t like a decision, you can, of course, ask for us to reconsider it. Once. If we made a decision you don’t like, complaining for pages and pages is not going to endear you to anyone. Not me, not the Co-OPs and not your fellow writers.
On that note, I intend to run this thread as an anarcho-communist cooperative. This is an unnecessarily complicated way of saying that my word DOES NOT overrule theirs. If there is an appeal and a dispute amongst the Co-OPs we will take a vote on the matter.
  • Post Quality
I don’t have a problem with short posts but please use proper spelling (I don’t care what regional variant), grammar etc.
Ideally also try to include a 'hook' when you write a post, which is to say something that gives other people something to respond to. If your post is something along the lines of 'Bilbo Baggins stayed in his room and read a book while the world was ending', don't be surprised if nobody responds to you.
  • Posting Commitment: Nothing is worse than making an RP only for it to die. Please try to make at least one post every 48 hours or so. If you find yourself unable to post, please let me know in the OOC thread. If it looks like you've abandoned a character in the middle of a fight scene I might decide to kill them off if I'm feeling particularly malicious.
  • Posting Speed On the flip side, blitz posting can also be infuriating. So, especially during the important scenes, I recommend giving your fellow players a reasonable time to make a reply. We all have real lives. That being said, if someone leaves everyone waiting for over 48 hours, feel free to carry on the scene without them.
  • OOC thread Manners
Nothing annoys me more than bad manners on an OOC thread (apart from that 'Look at my horse, my horse is amazing' song). Swearing, passive-aggressive sniping or any other rude behaviour are not welcome on the OOC. I will warn you once. If you can’t control yourself I will ask you to remove yourself from the thread.
  • IC thread Manners
Remember, we are writing a story together, not playing to win.
  • Character Death
Player death is possible in this RP, though will be quite rare and easily avoidable. Please don’t write that you have killed another character unless you have OOC permission from the character's owner to do it. Beat them into a pulp or take them prisoner, but don’t kill them. Having said that, if someone does something really stupid, I reserve the right to announce your character has got themselves killed. Likewise, if someone goes inactive in the middle of a fight scene without explanation and cannot be raised, I may decide to kill their character off.
  • Keep it PG13
Shouldn’t need to be telling you this really but keep the erotica and gorn off the thread. Hopefully you all know how to write forum-safe stuff. I will be extremely disappointed if the mods have to pay us a visit.
  • Banning Players
I really don’t want to be doing that but reserve the right to do so if you cannot follow the (hopefully, rather simple) rules above.

CHARACTER CREATION

Your Character

I am not going to tell you all the things that are going on in the plot, that's for your people to figure out. I like to give people the opportunity to be creative with their characters; however, in order that the RP works, there are a number of rules around character creation that I am going to put in place and which I will not deviate from under any circumstances:
  • Your character is a normal human who is developing powers. You are not a fairy/alien/demigod.
  • Your character is of high-school age.
  • Your character lives on the island and has not been off it for six months or more. They might not originally be from there, of course, and might not even be American.
  • Your character's parent/s might be involved with the military base. If they are, you have not been on it and know nothing about it, either through spying or your parent/s saying something indiscreet.

Super Powers

Keep. It. Simple. Stupid. While I encourage you to be as creative as you like with your powers, if I can't figure out what you are doing, then I'm not going to accept your app. Similarly I would like your powers to each to one thing. If it looks like you are trying to create an inspector gadget bag of tricks to let you waltz through any scenario, I'm not going to accept it. You are going to be part of a group and scenarios will mean that you need to work together.

When you develop secondary powers, I'm going to ask you to please make these powers ones which work with your other ones thematically. I'm not going to break the power sets into groups and force you to adhere to them.

Because I want to keep the RP fair and playable, any messing with time or mind control powers are not allowed.

For the sake of this RP, powers will come in three levels.

  • Level One:If these are enhancements on normal human powers (such as strength, speed, dexterity) then you would be at the peak end of what might be expected for someone of your characters shape and build. People wouldn't immediately assume a super-power though they would be impressed. For more exotic powers (like throwing fire about), you would be at a similar level of threat to an enemy.
  • Level Two:You are a significant menace to anyone who gets in your way. If your powers are enhancements you would be about double what a top human athlete can manage. Exotic powers would be of a similar threat level.
  • Level Three:People with these powers are getting into the domain of the superheroes from the movies. Expect enhancement powers to be performing at 8x human capacity.
These levels are all a bit vague because I can't possibly think of all the powers you might think of so please don't be offended if I ask you to tweak yours a bit. To help you along, I've also added a few power development ideas below:

Super Strength (for a 17 year old in average shape prior to enhancement): Level 1 - Bench pressing something like 300lb, Level 2 - Bench pressing something like 1,400lb, Level 3 - bench pressing something like 5 tonnes.
Super Speed (for our average 17 year old again): Level 1 - Running at about 16 miles to hour over a sustained distance, Level 2 - Running at 40 miles per hour over a sustained distance, Level 3 - Running at 160 miles per hour over a sustained distance. Obviously you wouldn't be able to instantly accelerate to that speed though!
Telekinesis: Level 1 - Able to throw a 75 lb object across a room, Level 2 - Able to throw a 500lb object across a room (or scatter a group of people), Level 3 - Able to throw a 2 tonne object across a room.
Healing: Level 1 - A broken bone might heal in a week, Level 2 - A broken bone might heal in a day, Level 3 - A broken bone should heal within 3 hours.

Hopefully you get the picture!

Power Development

Because this RP, your powers will develop in stages, the app form will ask you to specify what powers in want in Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3. I will tell you when these Phases happen.

If you decide mid-way through Phase 1 that you would rather have some different power than what you'd originally written in your app for Phase 2/3, that is totally fine! Just clear it with me first. Your powers will be in the following categories in the three Phases of the RP.

Phase One: One single level one power.
Phase Two: Allocated two more 'levels' to powers with no power going above Level 2. Practically this means either a Level Two and a Level one or three Level one powers
Phase Three: Allocate three more 'levels' to powers with no power going above Level 3.

Tagging. I plan on creating a Scarecrow style character. His name power is based on fear, and I’d like to include flaws in his power.

Character Description
    Name: Ascot Rider, Earth’s Defender.
    Gender: Male.
    Age: 14
    Appearance:
    Image

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: Ascot is a bit of a nerd as regards history, literature, and the occasional comic book and that gives him a knowledge of the potential scenarios that the existence of superpowers brings into the spotlight. Aside from that, he is also great at track and field, a decent boxer and wrestler (for a kid), and he regularly hunts with his parents, thus giving him knowledge of how to use a hunting rifle and knives. He is also a decent cook.

Weaknesses: Ascot is prematurely cynical and self-absorbed, believing that 1.) everything revolves around him, and 2.) that every failure he makes is a calamity for himself and the world. He is unable to deal with failing and finds it hard to grasp the notion that he can learn from his mistakes, although it is not impossible for him. He also believes that his knowledge of tropes makes him most fit to give advice on what the other kids with powers should do.

    Phase One Power:

Entropic Touch (Level 1) - Ascot can cause non-living organic matter in his hands to rot, metal to rust, and small toys (toy cars and such) to break down when he touches them. It does not affect living beings. Note that not all non-living organic matter rots at the same rate, but given time and enough energy (two hours at most), Ascot can rot even plastic.

    Phase Two Powers:

Remote Entropy (Level 2) - Ascot can cause non-living organic matter within sight range, up to a distance of ten meters to rot, metal to rust, and complex weapons like guns to break down and turn useless. This power still does not affect living beings.

Phantasm of Death (Level 1) - Ascot manifests mental powers for the first time - If anyone makes a final decision to attack him, he or she causes an illusion of a target’s worst fear to appear before them for five seconds.

    Phase Three Powers:

Entropic Torrent (Level 3) - Ascot can generate waves of black entropic energy from his hands which decays all nonliving objects they touch to dust. The range of this attack is up to fifteen meters in length and cannot be blocked by physical objects for obvious reasons. Barriers of energy formed by other powers can also resist this, but even they eventually rot and decay unless it's another Level 3 power defending...

Flight (Level 3) - Ascot can fly at 50 meters per hour, and in shorter distances, can fight while flying.

Background:

Personality: Ascot believes that his powers are to be used to ‘Defend Earth’, whatever it meant, and that he and the others were chosen for that very same purpose. At the same time, he does not know what it means to protect the planet or what it should be defended from, something that frustrates him to no end. The realization that he has powers has amplified an innate self-centeredness, but his knowledge of the darker scenarios involving powers has also made him more cynical about how others will treat him and his friends when said powers are revealed to the wider world. Furthermore, he isn’t blind - He is suspicious of where said powers come from and what leads can he get on that...

Backstory: Ascot was Preferton born-and-bred, with his family being there as long as anyone can remember. His parents ran a small restaurant and bar which drew tourists and locals alike. He was moderately-talented in whatever he put his mind to, and regularly read what fiction he can. There were even rumors he might be sent to advanced classes on the Mainland, but nothing came of those.

But as he grew up, something nagged at him - What was his purpose in life? He delved towards religion, but there were few and contradictory answers. He turned towards romance with both girls and boys - That held few answers either. So the nagging feeling followed, turning into despair.

One day, as he held an apple for a quick snack, he felt it, a surge of power. On instinct, he channeled said surge into the apple, only to find it rotting in his hand. And it was then that he saw his purpose or what be believed to be his purpose - To find and rally others like him, if there were any, and guide them to coexistence and harmony with normal humans, or at least continued secrecy.

The fact that he didn’t know exactly how to do that didn’t matter. What mattered was that someone had to step up, even if it was someone inadequate. That someone had to step in and help create a world where those with powers and those without can live in peace. But part of him asked, was it really so simple?

Apologies, I forgot about this post! I can alter my character's powerset to make room for yours if you would like me to - I accidentally gave him some fear-based powers too.

No issues, pretty cool that there’s another fear power user! Maybe we could make something of it.

For my guy, his fear ability’s more cerebral and shadow based. I imagine that for his endgame, he’s basically gonna be Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street. But yeah, don’t change your guy yet, let’s see how my fear guy pans out.

Character Description
Name: Jack Brekker (Formerly Jack Stockton)
    Gender: Male
    Age: 15
    Appearance:
    Image
    6'3, 135 lbs

Strengths and Weaknesses
    Skills: Expert in lying
Weaknesses: Has the stamina of a child, if the child didn’t have lungs

Phase One Power: Limited intangibility: Able to phase singular limbs, head, or torse out of existence, but requires at least 75% of the body to remain tangible to not disappear entirely. Can move through walls, but requires careful timing, and cannot become solid inside of other objects. Phasing is not automatic, and to avoid attacks Jack must know the attack is coming. While intangible, a faint outline of the body part is still visible.
Good for sneaking through walls, dodging hits in fights, and generally confusing enemies as to whether or not he’s actually there.
    (Level 1)

Phase Two Powers: Full intangibility: Capable of entire body going intangible at once. Jack cannot breathe while fully intangible.
Greatly enhances Jack’s ability to enter places he isn’t necessarily supposed to be
    (Level 2)

Yoink: Jack can turn any nonliving object under the size of a cantaloupe intangible, so as long as he can touch it. Breaking physical contact turns the object tangible, and only one object can be turned intangible at a time.
    (Level 1)

    Phase Three Powers:
Reform: Jack can turn tangible while inside of an object, creating a hole in the object the size of the body part that became tangible. Still unable to breathe when fully intangible.
Turns his intangibility into a truly offensive power, a powerful ability that makes Jack incredibly hard to defend against.
    (Level 3)

Yoink+: Jack can now turn objects up to the size of a car intangible, and can break physical contact with the object with it still remaining intangible, though only to a distance of 100 feet. Jack can remotely turn objects tangible, and only three objects may be under this effect at a time.
    (Tier 3)

Background:
Personality: A master of glib charm, and a grandstander of epic proportions, inside very insecure on the perceived uselessness of his power
Backstory: Jack didn’t come from a bad home. Or a great one. Just an average one. He had average parents with average jobs and an average sized house. He had average friends and an average childhood overall.

He absolutely hated it.

His whole life, he hated how the spotlight always seemed to be on someone else when it should’ve been on him. So he did something about it. He started mimicking anyone who seemed “cool”. He was so good at it he forgot what he was actually like. Eventually, all the people he imitated combined into one cool, smooth, charming bastard, a bastard who would come to call himself Jack Brekker. His parents didn’t notice. When he went to pick up a glass of water and it slipped through his hand, they didn’t notice either.

At first he was furious. All the powers he could’ve gotten, and he got the one that put him out of the spotlight. But then he realized, this power was just another way for him to observe, to learn, to copy, unnoticed. And then? He felt a lot better.

Hey Dyelli. This is a tag.

I might bring Freddy Allen back (shapeshifter, but into mythical creatures). Course, with these guys here so far, maybe another power set would be needed.
The Clockwork Circus - Welcome to a steampunk RP rife with crime, gangs, beggars, and starting off as the lowest of the low, in the lowest socio-economic place there is.

Might remake a certain character from a similar RP :p

Sorry for the delay, but is it okay if Ascot proposes to Jack that they start dating (only PG-13, I promise)?

That way, their attempts to be cool reinforce each other instead of rivaling each other - A strategic alliance, if you will.

Would a character with autism mess with this game? (I have autism so it’s okay with me, and I’d like to run him through an arc where he’s trying to control his anxiety and learn to socialize with neurotypicals.

:lol2:
Character Description
Name: Nikolai Sapohznik, Czar of the Rasputitsa

    Just call him Nick.
    Gender: A him
    Age: 17
    Appearance:
    Image

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: Few people in the high school cook better than him. He is also highly intelligent and is particularly good at chemistry.
    Weaknesses: A HOPELESS romantic.
    Phase One Power:
General Winter (Level 1): Nikolai gradually radiates an aura of cold around himself in a radius of ten meters. Air temperature is decreased by 20 degrees Celsius within the radius, but he can actively make it go lower at a rate of -10 degrees per 30 seconds down to a minimum of -70 degrees. He himself and those he mentally selects are immune to the effects of General Winter.
    Phase Two Powers:

    General Winter: (Level1) No changes.

Glaciokinesis Kai: (Level 2) Nikolai is able to create ice with a maximum weight of 25kg in any shape he wishes. The ice is as strong as bronze.
    Phase Three Powers:

Glaciokinesis Uluchsen: (Level 3) Apart from forming ice, Nikolai can also control it with high precision. With this ability, ice floes shaped into sharp daggers can be thrust against attackers with high speeds, making them as effective as any modern firearm. Thus, he can form ice in any shape with a combined maximum weight of 150 kilograms.

From Mother Russia With Love: (Level 3) After a lengthy charge time, Nikolai casts a mighty winter within a local area of 300 meters which ends within 2 hours. Nikolai can also cast a blizzard with the same area of effect, but it requires constant concentration and the slightest disruption can cause the blizzard to dissipate. He can also use this with less power with greater frequency.

Background:
Personality: Nikolai is a clever joker, perhaps best known for his love of memes on history and science. He has many strange interests, and is seen as strange as a result. However, he is also a flaunter of his superior intellect and looks down on those that don't understand in his level, giving him a mixed reputation. Still, he is ostensibly caring and defensive for those he sees as friend or as equals, but other people that are not as close don't receive the same treatment, and may even be seen with contempt of they had assaulted him in the past. However, he is the kind of person that puts on a "free hugs" placard on himself, for some reason.
Backstory:
Nikolai is descended from Russian Jews that fled persecution from the czarist regime of the Tsardom of Russia right before World War I. The Sapohzniks Clan settled on Prefeton Island, and they stayed there until this day, though a significant number has moved to the continental United States.

He and his brother, Nikita, have had made numerous visits to Russia and back, with them and the rest of their family usually taking a month or two in the home of the Leonovs, the relatives of the wife of their patriarch that led their flight to America more than a century ago. Here, they would also have a rather close relationship with their cousins, especially Sasha, Grisha, Katyusha, Vasily, and Iosif.

Nikolai was born a few minutes before Nikita, making him the older of the two of them. He was the middle child, with his older sister Katarina being born a few good years before he was. His father, Piotr Andreevich, was a soldier, and he would often be absent due to being assigned in the sand strewn battle fields of the Middle East as well as the broken cities of the now defunct Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. However, an injury forced Piotr to retire from the military; he would then pursue online business, while also allowed him far more time with his twin sons. Thus, Nikolai would be raised in a rather, say, unique way; he was raised to be goal oriented and to have a will of metal; determination and perseverance are some of the things that would define him as he grew up. Nikolai would thus be seen with favour by most of the local people of Prefeton. Intelligent, courteous, straight A's: the perfect child in the eyes of many. He had great pride with himself, and rightly so, for he is bound to be of the honor roll of the local high school. It was in his elementary days that he developed his eccentric properties; he sometimes used a cane even though he was not an old man, and always wore black and grey. He was weird, sure, but that didn't stop the girls (and some guys, no doubt) from crushing over him and his brother, both of whom are admittedly attractive to the human eye. In junior year, he held the position of Editor in Chief of the school paper, which ensured that he knew quite literally everyone in the school.

Days would pass, and then they turned to months and then years. One day, while contemplating about the future, he found himself lowering the temperature of his surroundings; frost and snow had formed on the ground all around him. It was a strange time, too; it wasn't even the winter months yet. There was only one possible outcome, then: he now has the power of the winter.

After that, he would go on to tell his twin brother Nikita about his newfound powers, which he thought of as a gift from above. Perhaps this was intended as retribution against those who dared meddle with him? However, as it soon turned out, Nikolai was not alone; Nikita had gained technological abilities as his own powers, and other young people across the island would gain powers of their own as well.

Tag. I plan on creating an electricity-based character.
"Stick to the pack, and the pack will provide."
We are a leftist nation that believes in the "we" over "I". That's why we are fond of wolves, because the Alpha looks after the pack.
Stick with us, and give us loyalty, and we'll do things that benefit you, and we'll stick with you.
If you cross us, however, then as a pack, we will hunt you.
Don't underestimate us.

I am very pleased to see we've generated so much buzz so quickly... now I need to look at some apps.

I have ADHD and Aspergers' IRL, so it'd be a good idea.

I don't mind people writing characters with developmental disorders, provided they do it sensitively. Same with people writing unfamiliar nationalities/ethnicities/religious groups etc.

Character Description
Name: Jack Dredd (Formerly Jack Stockton)
    Gender: Male
    Age: 15
    Appearance:
Tall, (6'3 195 cm) lean, (145 lbs 65 kg), and almost criminally handsome asian teen

Strengths and Weaknesses
Skills: Highly charismatic, expert in lying
Weaknesses: Has the stamina of a child, if the child didn’t have lungs

Phase One Power: Limited intangibility: Able to phase singular limbs, head, or torse out of existence, but requires at least 50% of the body to remain tangible to not disappear entirely. Can move through walls, but requires careful timing, and cannot become solid inside of other objects. Phasing is not automatic, and to avoid attacks Jack must know the attack is coming. While intangible, a faint outline of the body part is still visible.
Good for sneaking through walls, dodging hits in fights, and generally confusing enemies as to whether or not he’s actually there

Phase Two Powers: Full intangibility: Capable of entire body going intangible at once. Jack cannot breathe while fully intangible.
Greatly enhances Jack’s ability to enter places he isn’t necessarily supposed to be

    Phase Three Powers:
Reform: Jack can turn tangible while inside of an object, creating a hole in the object the size of the body part that became tangible.
Turns his intangibility into a truly offensive power, a powerful ability that makes Jack incredibly hard to defend against

Eventually, all the people he imitated combined into one cool, smooth, charming bastard, a bastard who would come to call himself Jack Dredd.

Looks good, provided he still can't breathe with an intangible head in phase 3 (don't want anyone totally invulnerable).

Also, might be worth changing the name since you already have a Jack Dredd in Knot. Also, you haven't added any secondary powers.

Character Description
    Name: Ascot Rider, Earth’s Defender.
    Gender: Male.
    Age: 14
    Appearance:

Entropic Touch - Ascot can cause non-living organic matter in his hands to rot, metal to rust, and small toys (toy cars and such) to break down when he touches them. It does not affect living beings.

    Phase Two Powers:

Remote Entropy - Ascot can cause non-living organic matter within sensory range to rot, metal to rust, and complex weapons like guns to break down and turn useless. This power still does not affect living beings.

Phantasm of Death - Ascot manifests mental powers for the first time, causing an illusion of a target’s worst fear to appear before them for five seconds.

    Phase Three Powers:

Entropic Zone - Ascot can extend the effects of Remote Entropy throughout an area the size of Prefer Isle, but the most powerful aspect of this ability is that he can choose what gets affected or not - Objects or weapons belonging to people he believes to be his allies or innocents are safe, while those belonging to people he believes are his enemies are not. Living beings are still not affected.

Flight - Ascot can fly the length of Prefer Isle in one minute, and in shorter distances, can fight while flying. He can also float to a height equivalent to Prefer Isle’s length.

Even Nightmares Fear Me - Anyone who tries to attack Ascot automatically has a vision of their worst fear which lasts for as long as they intend to attack Ascot.

Could you please specify where you are putting the points for these ones?

Looks like someone else already went for intangibility, eh? Well whatever, not like I could rush an app in with the dodgy internet I've currently got on the west coast of Scotland. :p

Formerly Videssos. Just a femboy-obsessed degenerate. Also interested in history, mythology, fantasy, science fiction, metal and some other stuff.
A little bird told me, "Go, Go! Socialise! Talk to those fine people! And then, KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM! Plunge your knife into their throats when they ain't lookin', and then burn 'em to the ground!"
Well that's silly, isn't it?
