What party system does YN have?

Postby The Aziran Islands » Sat Dec 21, 2019 2:35 pm

A party system refers to the number of relevant political parties in a country, and their chances of winning an election and forming a government.

Types of party systems:
Multi-party: Several political parties compete in elections and have a chance of controlling government.
Example: Israel

Quasi two-party: Two major parties dominate politics, though minor parties still have substantial representation.
Example: United Kingdom

Two-party: Politics are overwhelmingly dominated by two parties, and minor parties have almost no chance of electoral success.
Example: United States

Dominant-party: A single political party or group of ideologically similar parties dominates politics and nearly always wins elections, and other parties have little to no chance of defeating them.
Example: Russia

One-party: Only one political party or group of ideologically similar parties are allowed to exist and contest elections, and all others are banned.
Example: China

Non-partisan: Elections are largely contested by political independents. Political parties are either very small or completely outlawed.
Example: Many small island nations (Tuvalu, Palau, etc.)

Aziria has a multi-party system. Several political parties compete in national and local elections, and nine parties are represented in Aziria's National Assembly. No party has ever won an absolute majority.

The Democratic Republic of Gandoor has had a quasi two-party system since the early 1960s. Politics is historically and traditionally dominated by the left-wing Gandoor Communist Party and the centre-left New Democratic Party since the establishment of the Democratic Republic in 1904, however third parties have managed to have more electoral success starting in the late 50s, early 60s, after the end of the Gandoor Civil War.

The official beginning of our nation's quasi two-party system is considered to be the 1964 elections to our legislature, the Forum, as these were the first legitimate elections to see a third party gaining any electoral seats, with the Royal Monarchy Party gaining 37 seats. (The 1946 party saw Prime Minister Petrikov's Revolutionary Socialist Party gaining 657 seats, however these election results are widely recognized as being illegitimate due to widespread voter intimidation and fears that he would ban both the Communist and NDP if they attempted any major stand against his party, this election ultimately had only 12% turnout)

Since the 1964 elections, there has never not been an election where at least three parties have representation in the Forum, however the vast majority of seats remain split between the Communist and New Democratic Parties. Indeed, as of 2024, the makeup of the legislature is as follows:
- Gandoor Communist Party: 487 seats
- New Democratic Party: 481 seats
- People's Party of Gandoor: 21 seats
- Gandoor Freedom Group: 11 seats

Multi-Party system with the Democrats (Conservative), Liberals (Neoliberal Centrists), Progressives, and Labour historically having a member holding the office of the presidency. Parliamentary politics, all four held seats alongside the Greens and Pirate parties.
Was once a ruthless capitalist Corporate State in South America (1800s - 1950s), but has since reformed into a Social Democratic, Federal, Parliamentary Republic whose politics is 90% of my irl views. We're Italo-Spanish-Chinese influenced and thus there's a lot of Chinese and Greco-Roman cultural references.

The world in this nation is changing for the better, current year is 2042.

A one-party system. Each Arbiter has absolute jurisdiction over their respective branch of government, while the Prime Mind retains complete control over the Pantheon and the free reign to override its decisions. There is no competition for power as only the supreme leader administrates the shape of the government and society altogether.

While officially The USRM has had a multi-party system since it's inception, in practice the system is a lot more centralised around the three main parties.Especially in the recent years after the DDCP government failed the UCP has been acting together with the SNP and a reluctant SFP to form a political coalition that would keep parties they didn't want out of power. This political coalition proved to be so powerful that anyone not a part of it has no chance of winning the elections.Parties outside of this coalition heavily protest it and view it as a subversion of democracy. The SFP has also mildy protested the coalition but didn't do anything else. Also aside from this any party that supports non-socialistic ideologies has been banned in 2000 which means that non-socialists have no parties to represent them which is a heavy blow to democracy.

It has been multiparty for most of the nation's independent existence.

Single party from 1760 to 1787 and 1886 to 1896, two party from 1787 to 1791, multiparty from 1791 to 1886 and 1896 to present day. In reality, the Anollasian People's Party had been the dominant party until around 1820 though.

At this point, Zeganas is in flux as to which two parties are dominating politics, right now there are 3 main parties that control 89% of seats in the lower chamber of government and 81% of seats in the upper chamber. Those are the Democratic Socialist Party, the United Republican Party, and the Social Democratic Party, in order of power in federal politics. So you could say that Zeganas is a quasi-3 party state at the moment.

The Democratic Communist Socialist Party of La Habana Cuba, does not govern the nation, does not choose, select, suggest or appoint the government and parliament leaders. It only guides the nation and the people in the democratic principles of the revolution. We are the continuity of the revolution:

The Hanseatic Trade Cities has a council based system, each of the Hanseatic nations elects a councillor, who goes to the grand council in Lübeck, together the grand council elects a representative, the representative is no more powerful than the council, but is the face of their decisions. mayors are elected for each city, and the mayors report to the councillor, who reports to the grand council.

Aikoland has a quasi two-party system. Politics are dominated by the centre-right Conservative Party and the centre-left Social Democratic Party, with both parties tracing their origins to the two political factions which arose in the early 19th century. The Conservatives were originally the Royaliste faction and the Social Democratic Party were originally the Citoyen faction, which eventually became the Liberal Party in the 1870s, and then the Liberal Party split with most members forming the modern Social Democratic Party in the 1930s.

However, since the introduction of proportional representation for both chambers of Parliament with the fourth and current constitution in 1902, there have been other political parties to gain seats in the legislature. There are presently a total of four parties in Parliament, including the Conservative and Social Democrats. Due to our nation's small size and population (as well as the 3% electoral threshold), there generally aren't more than four or five parties with representation on a national level, however smaller parties may have better representation in local politics.

Za Kakumei has a non-partisan system. Local town governments, known as communes, are governed through a process of direct democracy, members of the town coming together in a popular assembly to debate and decide local policy. Each commune then elects an instantly recallable delegate to represent the commune and their interests to other communes, who together form a federation of communes, known as a canton, and a Soviet (council) of those delegates who decide policy on a canton level according to the interests of the citizens. Cantons would each also elect a delegate and form a federation with other cantons, known as a county, and a county council. This would function similarly to a canton council, and the same process would be established for the creation of district level councils. At the top there would be the Supreme Soviet, made up of delegates from the districts, who would have executive and legislative power over the nation, and would elect a Chairperson to oversee the council. At all levels, the delegates are able to be recalled by the councils below them, as to ensure protection against corruption, and delegates have a term limit of two weeks to protect against consolidation of power. There are no need for political parties at any of these levels, as each council relies on deliberation and consensus decision making in order to decide policies for the country.

However, the small Communist Party of Ubuntustan, Ubuntustan Communist Party, and National Democratic Party of Ubuntustan still legally contest elections.

The Imperial Diet has, on paper, a multi-party system, but in practice, it is somewhat quasi bi-partisan. The partisan landscape resembles Westminster, in that there are left-wing parties, right-wing parties and cross bench parties. Here's what it looks like:

> Government Coalition
• Federalist Party of Gylthas (FPG)
• Party for Gylthan Unity (PGU)
> Opposition Coalition
• Liberal Democratic Party of Gylthas (LDPG)
• Social Democratic Party of Gylthas (SDPG)
• Gylthan Green Party (GGP)
• Communist Party of Gylthas (CPG)
> Independent Parties
• Viceroyal Party (VP)
• Imperial Party of Gylthas (IPG)
• Party for Gylthan Minorities (PGM)

First-level parties have, at least on paper, multi-party systems, but this isn't always the case. For example, Bartland has a bipartisan system, with the Bartish Liberal Party (a cadet party of the LDPG) and the Bartish Traditional Party (a cadet party of the FPG) having the most seats.
