Burleigh County, North Dakota May Bar New Refugees

Postby San Lumen » Sun Dec 08, 2019 2:33 pm

https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/nor ... dlines_hed

Burleigh County, North Dakota of which the state capital Bismarck is the county seat may become the first to bar future refugees from being resettled in the county. The county commission may soon vote on a resolution to do so. A public hearing will be held this week at a middle school due to overwhelming public interest in the proposal.

The action is being spurred by a Trump executive order that says refugees should only be resettled where states and local governments consent to it. Many governors and counties have already said they would including several in North Dakota such as Fargo and Grand Forks.

I think this is a stupid idea. It sends a message that the county isnt a welcoming place and gives off vibes of racism and bigotry. It sends an especially bad message the country when a county that contains the capital city declares itself unwelcoming. I hope any person who votes in favor of this is voted out come next election. Refugees help boost the economy and to the culture and melting pot that is America.

What's your take NSG?

I didn't think that counties were allowed to close their borders.

In a democracy shouldn't people consent to whether they want to be a settlement for refugees?

Trump executive order gives them the authority to bar refugees if they dont consent to it.

This isnt a referendum its a vote of the county commission.

If the locality votes for it, by all means. One wouldn't want to send the refugees where they aren't wanted anyway. I'm sure diverse places like New York will be a fine fit :^)

Stupid to categorically refuse refugees, but it's their prerogative.

According the local paper there has been a fair amount of public opposition to it but the county government may pass it anyway. I think it sends a very bad message the county where the state capital is declares itself unwelcoming.

Do the people get consulted every time someone wants to move into the county? That must get very tiresome.

Then, as you're always telling us, they should run for office or vote the government out.

It may be a bad message but it's theirs to send. If locals want to be stupid and it isn't violating the Constitution or whatever laws, they can be. It's one of things one has to deal with when there is local government.

That doesnt mean they can't tell their local officials they dont like the proposed ordinance. They are under no obligation to listen to the people.

But only if they voted in the last election for county commissioners.

Is every person moving into the county resettled by the Federal government? That must get expensive.

I could be wrong on this but the government sets how many refugees are taken in. The actual resettlement is done through different programs. I dont think the Federal government has a lot of say in it but there are some Federal Programs such as the Diversity Lottery.

Why would any refugee go to North Dakota anyway? Doesn't seem like a hotspot state that attracts refugees.

Grand Forks does have a booming tech industry. Even if it isnt a hotspot why should any place bar them. Its also my understanding refugees dont get much of a say in where they are placed.

The brown people hysteria syndrome continues I see

Evidently, it's a pretty popular spot.

As to why, I'm not sure. Though I'm sure Lutheran social services play a big role.

Yeah they are. The people voted for them.

Let grand forks have a crisis over foreign people. I'll make sure to mark it off as a place I'm not travelling to, since my appearance in the city limits may cause mass hysteria not seen since Orson welles' broadcast of war of the worlds.

Apparently the Lutheran church has a resettlement program in North Dakota. Im glad to hear the mayor of Fargo has said they will welcome refugees.

I dont think Burleigh wants to admit it but their ordinance has racial undertones.

Hmm I'm quite surprised North Dakota takes in refugees, even though it's a state that's quite isolated and home to not many people.

Not really. They are free to vote however they want.

Grand Forks has said they will welcome refugees. We are talking about Burleigh County home to the capital of Bismarck

Ok fine. Mass hysteria not seen since the anti vaccine movement came into existence.

The mayor of Grand Forks is a Democrat. Not sure the affiliation of Bismarck's mayor, although to my guess he leans R. Burleigh County itself heavily votes Republican.

The people of the county voted for them, so they have to listen to the voters. I think many of the people in the county are being idiots who think that a truckload of Mexicans is gonna show up in town and start killing people, but their votes do matter.

Let's just mark the county off as a no go-zone for anyone who remotely resembles Stellio Kontos, shall we?
