The Magarati Succession Crisis (TWI ONLY | IC)

November 11, 2019

New Thagu Restaurant, Ghan Pokhara, Second Tamuwan Hangate, northwestern Vendriothos*

"What would you like, baje?" The waitress asked as soon as the old man sat down.

"Nothing fancy, nani. Just one khana-set is enough." The old man said, taking heavy breaths with every word. "And twenty glasses of the best Marian you have."

"Got it." The waitress scribbled the notes. "Are you expecting friends?"

"Wish they could be here." The old man gave a sad reply.

The usually packed Thakali restaurant had few customers that night. Aside from the old man, the only other customers were a group of middle-aged businessmen discussing politics and two women in the corner. Half an hour later, the old man had finished the last grain of fried rice from his khana-set. But the drinks still remained untouched.

Then the old man made a strange request to the waitress. He wanted the remaining customers to join him. The businessmen were eager to talk politics and have more wine. The two women were a little hesitant at first but they too agreed to join the old man.

"And you too." The old man signaled for the waitress to have a seat and take a drink as well.

"Baje, I don't think it will be appropriate for me - "

"It will be on my name." The old man was defiant. After her manager told her that this man was okay, the waitress decided to sit next to this odd group.

"I am from the 1946 Generation. Every year, me and my friends used to gather at this restaurant and remember our fallen classmates. Last year, it was just Harka Bahadur and me. This year, it is just me."

The rest of the customers remained silent as they listened attentively. One of the businessmen asked the old man if it was really okay for them to drink the wine that had been ordered for the latter's dead friends. The old man simply nodded and replied that they all should have it to honor the fallen.

"What about the girls in your class?" One of the women asked after the old man mentioned that his entire class had been drafted for war when he was 16.

"They did their service as well. There were no exceptions for anyone. Most were taken by the air force while others were assigned the roles of snipers. You know most B-22 Southern Snakebird pilots were mainly women or girls." The old man then went on about how that particular plane had been severely outdated by the year 1946 and how being a Snakebird pilot was a suicide. Only one girl among his ten female classmates had managed to make it out alive through the great war.

"Her name was Daiyu. She was fortunate enough to have relatives in Domanania, who cared enough about her to take her in once the war was over. I have no idea whether she is still alive or not. I hope we can meet one last time if she is still breathing." The others gathered at the table either nodded or solemnly prayed.

Then the old man recounted stories of his actions in the northern front. By the time he and other boys in his class were all give guns and put in the same squad as reinforcements or cannon fodder for the notorious Nine Gyarong Gun, the Free Powers had already crossed the Central Canal and were advancing south every day. He remembered his first kill had been an Alteran volunteer in the Noronnican army who not much older than him. He had stopped counting after his third or fourth kill.

"We were lucky enough to not be in the reserves and not in the thick of the fighting. Among the boys, only Ram and Tenzin died during the war. After a year of being soldiers, we were taken as prisoners."

"Was it the Noronnicans or the Miklanians?"

"No. It was the Khumbuwanis." The old man's sentence made everyone go silent. This statement was relevant to the current affairs. "The Free Powers had told them they could be their own country. Nothing of that sort happened once the war ended. The Empire of Magarat was gone and there were 12 hangates in its place. But there was no Khumbuwan; just Khumbuwani territory under Hangate of Arun Valley. The worst enemy of the Magarati state is the Magarati people."

"That rascal Thebe Kulung Hang has lorded over Khumbuwan since 1995." One of the businessman raised his voice and almost everyone else seemed to agree. Earlier that day, Thebe Kulung Hang had declared independence for Khumbuwan. The terrorist group Khumbuwan Liberation Army was reportedly working alongside the local paramilitary Khumbuwan Defense Force, the Khumbuwan Volunteer Force and the Khumbuwani Reserves when they all jointly attacked the military base of the Majh Kirat Gun infantry battalion of the national army.

"He is basically a dictator. Independence, my ass! He just wants to be a hang who does not have to follow the commands of Jrm Hangma." Another man gave his strong opinion.

Then the discussion changed in an instant. They all vented their anger on the mad Hang of Khumbuwan. The old man just sighed as everyone started talking at the same time.

"I hope this Khumbuwani rebellion will end soon. This country is not ready for another war." The old man said as he emptied his glass.

*Vendriothos is the name of mainland Athara Magarat. The term was first used by ancient Roendavarian explorers and literally means "Land of Werebeasts".

Hang's Rest, New Libang, Liba Hangate, northern Vendriothos

It had been a day since Thebe Kulung Hang had declared his independence and two days since the death of Jyoti Thapa, aka Jrm Hangma. The first event was something the entire world knew about. The latter was still a state secret soon to be made public.

The Divan-i-Magarati and the Tribal Council of Elders held a short meeting that afternoon. They had wanted to hold the elections the next week but now that the fool Thebe Kulung Hang had raised his flag in open rebellion, the next national leader had to be chosen. After roughly two hours of discussion and voting, Reshma Rhula of Second Tamuwan Hangate was announced as the Hangma of Athara Magarat to replace the deceased Jrm Hangma. Her tenure was to be of one year, one month and two weeks.

However, it seemed as though the newly elected Rhula Hangma had other plans than to fight back against the Khumbuwani rebels who had won the engagement against the Majh Kirat Gun infantry battalion of the national army and taken complete control over all roads and airports leading to major Khumbuwani cities and towns. After being told that she was to be the new leader of the federation, Rhula Hangma told her aides to prepare the speech she would give regarding the death of her predecessor and also to arrange for her visit to Aprosia.

One of the aides asked, "Why Aprosia?"

"It is time to mend ties with fellow socialist states."

17 November
Rural Yangwarak, Khumbuwan

The aircraft made a lazy approach towards the makeshift airfield. Below its wings were field after field of mesh-covered crops, hidden from the prying eyes of the Magarati government. Ask anyone, and this was a tea plantation owned by the Yorong family, an influential and well respected financial family with long-held ties to the land. This was, of course, a lie, but anyone who did not wish to fall foul of the family did well to tell it. They called it "Rupee and Rifle", a reference to the idea of the "carrot and stick" approach of modern international statesmanship, and it was brutally effective. The Yorong family were practically the rulers of Yangwarak, and there was no-one in Khumbuwan who really could resist. Even Kulu Thebe Hang himself was best regarded as ambivalent towards the Yorong clan's activities, with rumours he too was on the Rupee end of the policy. And while they still feared the central government, it was crumbling day to day. The little plane's passengers, however, were very aware of the contents of the farm. They came from the same business.

Dragoslav Sumantri was the first to step out of the aircraft when it trundled to a stop at the end of the dusty road. His black suit was still well pressed despite the flight and with his sunglasses and cigarette he would easily pass for a respectable businessman, were in not for the machine pistols in the hands of his companions. This was a friendly visit, but in this business it always pays to be prepared for a surprise visit. He walked tall, or as tall as his 5'6" height allowed, exuding an air of menace and power. This aura befitted his position. He was, after all, part of the inner circle of the Nagahejo Society, a highly secretive group with their fingers in just about every pie in the territory and many abroad. He was here on a matter of business. The anarchy that had broken out in Athara Magarat was a godsend for the drug cartels, and he wanted to ensure that he could continue the highly profitable partnerships between the Khumbuwanis and Suvurnians. With the current power vacuum and rise of Kulu Thebe Hang to far greater power, the opportunities were too great to resist. With the fertile drug fields of Khumbuwan protected and the wide reach of the Suvurnians, their partnership's stakes in the drug market would be increased drastically.

Pulling one last cloud of smoke from his cigarette, Dragoslav contemplated the situation. The farms he saw here were truly a promising sign. The Yorongs were, of course, masters of the craft. He trusted well that they would be up to the task of drug procuration. The only hiccup in his plan that he could see came from their ability to work with the Lokhoms, who had historically been their rivals. Putting such thoughts aside, he threw the butt of his cigarette to the ground, no longer bound by Suvurnian anti-littering regulations and taking full advantage of this, and climbed into the back of the waiting truck after a brief greeting from the driver. This way, should anyone see the convoy, it would just be a delivery of frozen momos to the Yorong residence.

The ride took thirty minutes and the quality of the roads left much to be desired, but there were no major hitches nor even contact with police. The truck soon pulled off the main roads and wound its way through a heavily forested private road towards the Samyanglam Compound. After a checkpoint by cartel soldiers, the guests were escorted up to the front door. Waiting for them was Chhemsi Yorong, the patriarch of the Yorong clan. Dragoslav bowed his head in politeness, then spoke in a tone that fit with his general vibe of well heeled, businessmanly authority.

"Chhemsi, my friend, it has been a long time. How goes business?"

“This whole situation is ironic” Zátífá thought to herself as she organized her proposals for her upcoming presentation “And to think that this was all caused by one woman.” she continued. Her gaze remained unwillingly fixated on the all too familiar maroon seals stamped across their accompanying folders, while the perpetual ticking of the clock began to drown out the world around her. It had been weeks now since negotiations had begun seemingly with no end, as herself and the other representatives attempted to hash out each party’s wants and concerns. And now, the same council that initially shot down involvement in the region was breathing down her neck to hurry and finalize the deal with the San Montagnans before the turmoil in Athara Magarat could garner anymore international attention.

The San Montagnans had constantly expressed their concern over the possibility of an increase in existing border tensions along their easternmost province, which had once belonged to Jaring, and feared that since most people living in the region shared ískárí ancestry, the annexation would spark more unrest. Similarly, the Principality was concerned over what would become of the Ipachi in Marubhumi should the San Montagnans seek to intervene in the Cathas’ war against them. It was clear that neither side planned to limit their ambitions to just one of Athara’s Hangates, or at least, that was the case for Tásztł. Jaring was only just the start of its ambitions as Dura and the biggest prize of all, the fertile Hangate of Koch, were all on the nation’s ambitious plate of conquest.

“It's always the Torá…” Zátífá murmured to herself in indignation as she straightened her hair and began to lean back into her seat. It was her attempt at regaining her composer before the meeting would finally begin in earnest. For the past 20 minutes her consul, had been briefing the room on the previous meeting’s concerns & agreements, giving her a subtle nod to begin once he had finished.

“Thank you, návæ.” she replied, turning to her esteemed guests.“ So then, what do the Muntæ bring to the table today?”

Sabazio

Iskari embassy, Sabazio, San Montagna

“We bring forward the hopes of peaceful cooperation” Valtieri replied, “We understand that we have conflicting interests in the region and we hope that the Iskari people and its leaders will be able to reach an agreement and achieve what is best for both of our nations”

The agreement should have been reached ages ago, he thought to himself, the situation in Athara Magarat could have settled down during that time, but luckily the turmoil only seemed to increase. And now the Prime Minister was counting on him to get this deal done so their ambitions could be set in motion with minimal opposition.

“As you know. The San Montagnans, just like yourselves have claims on certain areas and hangates of Athara Magarat, while you seek Ipachi unification with Jaring, we seek to unify Chatha with its missing parts, eastern and western Chatha, this is a goal that not only do we want, but the Chathese people desire, just ask my esteemed colleague Chatak Samur, Governor of Chatha” He motions to his right and Samur gives motions a greeting.

“However, we do understand that both our desires go beyond just unification, and as to avoid future conflict between our great nations. I suggests that we determine what can and can’t be claimed, as to leave a buffer zone as to halt conflicting interests between our nations”
