Easwald murdered, NEPU in crisis
Unsolved murder of NEPU president escalates tensions of energy strike

KLEEDS - Phillip Easwald, President of the National Energy Producers Union, was found dead in his apartment, apparently by strangling. He was 52 years old.

Police responded to a call by neighbors around 2 a.m. to sounds of a struggle and commotion. When police arrived, his third-story apartment had been broken into through the balcony window and Easwald was found deceased in his bed.

NEPU’s leadership issued a statement this morning, condemning the political violence and doubled down on its commitment to the strike, which enters its sixth week.

“We will not be intimidated by political violence. Our late President fought long and hard for the rights of our workers, and we will continue the strike until our demands are met.”

Protests broke out across the country at the news of Easwald’s death, with demonstrators shutting down major highways into Edmond, Kleeds and Vergen. Police conducted 132 arrests.

Prince Yehuda Visits Ghantish Court At Emperor Nathan's Invite After Confusion Over Protocol

Awkward royal visit comes after a Ghantish tabloid snapped a picture of the prince unintentionally transgressing Ghantish court protocol with "unannounced" visit to Princess Arietta and Prince Vitus' private Ghish residence.
August 1st, 2019| By Binyomin Eisenberger (beisenberg@ryd.org) | 7:08pm EDT

GHISH, GHANT — The youngest prince, Yehuda, 25, was formally invited to the Ghantish Imperial Court today by Emperor Nathan IV after a protocol snafu that raised eyebrows in Yisrael and the Ghanto-Belisarian court circuit. The Ghantish tabloid outlet The Nibbler had snapped a picture of His Highness, confirmed this morning by the Yisraeli Foreign Ministry, entering the private Ghish residence of Princess Arietta of Ghant and her husband, Prince Vitus of Staalmark (Allamunnika). The Imperial Court of Ghant has a protocol that request foreign noble dignitaries to first petition it and be received by the Emperor of Ghant and frowns upon private visits to the Ghish residences of Ghantish royals, as it gives off the impression of impropriety.

According to a diplomatic cable shared with the Dispatch by a member of the Foreign Ministry, Prince Yehuda had befriended Princess Arietta and Prince Vitus at the wedding reception of Emperor Constantine of Latium in December 2017, and had made an "unannounced" visit to pay them a social call. While a spokesman for the Royal Family said they were aware of the trip when asked, other sources in the Presidential Palace say that President Feldman and most of the Royal Family were caught unawares by the youngest prince's secretive trip.

When The Nibbler published the picture and made salacious allegations, Prince Yehuda returned to the Yisraeli Embassy in Ghish and the ambassador, Ariel Goldblatt, released a statement saying, "During an unannounced visit to pay a social call with several friends at the Ghish court, Prince Yehuda unintentionally run afoul of proper court protocol. He will petition Emperor Nathan IV and be received by him if accepted before he meets with members of the Court."

Goldblatt later confirmed an official request was made and accepted, and the prince was later received at the Inperiala Palace.

Third Prince No Stranger To Controversy

Prince Yehuda - oftentimes referred to by the diminutive 'Huda' by his family and friends - has been involved with controversy, awkwardness, and polarized statements ever since his mid-teens. The third-in-line to the throne has been nicknamed the "black sheep" of the Royal Family, and his religious and political affiliations break with his family's conventional religio-political practice and preferences.

While his father, King Yaakov II, is known for his Dat Leumi ("National Religious") philosophy and level of religious observance (and Yehuda's older brothers Hezekiah III and Michoel for being Chardal ("National Chareidi"), Yehuda is known for following the stringencies of the Yeshivish sector.

Besides his level of religious observance and stringency, Prince Yehuda has gravitated towards the far-right politics of the League for New Judea (also nicknamed the Northern League), while his family has maintained a generally nonpolitical approach, although each royal is privately known to favor one of the majority mainstream parties.

Presaging what may be an uncomfortable meeting with the Ghantish monarch, Yehuda was caught by reporters in 2018 harshly criticizing Nathan IV (and Ghantish Prime Minister Nymun Izarbegiratzeak) for reportedly expressing private comments in favor of a public referendum in the southern Yarden River Valley that is in Outer Yisrael. The young prince was subsequently thrashed in the Ghantish press, but the Ghantish government declined to comment at that time.

Yisraeli Visit Opening For Nathan's Critics, As Well

While many pitfalls could await Prince Yehuda, his visit has given an angle for Emperor Nathan's critics and political opponents to direct public attention to their long-running complaints about the northerly country's head of state.

Two Members of the Ghantish Parliament, granted anonymity to speak freely, assert their view that the emperor may not be of sound mind, and that he cares more for the creature comforts of the palace than in his royal duties to govern. One MP said, exasperated: "It's been duly noted that His Majesty has little interest in ruling, and prefers to spend his time researching arcane lore and ancient mysticism."

The other noted worriedly that "if he's so heavily invested in that nonsense then it must be considered whether or not to suggest a regency on his behalf in order to maintain a semblance of royal authority."

Yehuda's visit dovetails with fears among these and others like-minded in Ghantish politics that Emperor Nathan will discuss obscure minutae of Jewish Kabbalah mysticism or religious philosophy rather than matters of state, international politics, and bilateral relations.

The office of the Prime Minister of Ghant and the Inperiala Palace declined to comment on these accusations.

Binyomin Eisenberger reported from Yerushalayim, Yisrael. None of these organizations are associated with the RYD, and all opinions and personal views in the article do not reflect the viewpoints of the RYD or their employees.

Party seminar invites national energy workers to speak
by Galina Lukanova

Comrade Workers were among the honored speakers at a seminar hosted by the Communist Party to discuss the longevity of current national energy policy at the National Council building.

The seminar, whose title was Creating sustainable practices in the maintenance of the national energy production, focused on re-examining policies enacted to increase energy worker productivity in 2014. Specifically among the topics were the efficacy of the transferal of supervisory duties in coal power plants from Labor Leaders to Group Leaders. This policy was put in place to increase specialist oversight over energy production practices to simplify work processes for Comrade Workers and minimize accidents and workplace injuries.

Also among the topics were the transition from two twelve-hour shifts to four six-hour shifts to reduce worker fatigue.

"The involvement of communal leadership in the production of energy has greatly simplified the work for us," said Chernyu Tsankov, a Labor Leader who works at Coal Power Plant 8. "Our vanguard party has prioritized quality of life for workers, which allows us to prioritize the production of energy."

Over two-dozen workers from power plants across the country gave their accounts of how recent policy and regulation changes have affected their work. Party members in attendance could be seen dutifully putting to paper the sincere offerings made by the workers that were based on first-hand experience.

Some workers noted that, although data seems to suggest that reducing working hours and spreading supervisory roles to senior members and specialists has reduced incidents overall, incidents between shift changes have risen drastically. This could be due to miscommunications between changing shifts that result in ignorance over matters that, while needing attention, are inadvertently neglected.

Minister of Natural Resources Rosen Avramov said that, after analyzing the data regarding incidents between shift changes and hearing the eyewitness testimony of workers, that his office would immediately set to work at finding a solution to ease shift transitions.

Comrade Avramov also led the assembly of workers and Party members in a patriotic chant of solidarity for workers protesting for better conditions in Aethele.

"Verbizan workers stand in solidarity with the energy workers of Aethele against the spurious authority of reactionaries!"

Based on the seminar's success, the Communist Party has announced it plans to hold periodic seminars with other working industries to assess the efficacy of policy.

Tarsan T80125 MBT engaging a rebel vehicle

Tarsan troops are on the move in Almadis today after a terror attack gripped the capital of Serekos. The headquarters of the Royal Privy Council was attacked today by Yen rebels believed to be based in the southern portion of the country.

The Imperial Legion Attaché for the region, Lieutenant-General Epipirus Vestarches, has stated that Tarsan forces will be responding to the attack with the appropriate force it is due. “This attack is an egregious assault against the rightful, recognized government of Almadis. Our guarantee of support for the government of the Empress remains absolute and our resprisal will be swift.”

Tarsan forces under Colonel Andrew Atronis have reportedly, for the first time since this 20th century, moved out from the capital of Serekos early this morning and headed en route towards southern Almadis with the announced intention of striking rebel targets. Several Gu-24 bombers and other air assets took off early this morning from Cerberus Air Force Base and struck several known rebel targets with long cruise missile strikes.

Megas Domestikos Ioulos Agrios announced that Tarsan High Command was actively coordinating with Almadian forces to cripple Yen rebels. “In response to this atrocity, we must meet force with force. A demonstration to these vile murderers that we will not tolerate acts of terror against the innocent people is in order. I have received a sealed order from the Argios Palace authorizing the Legion to respond appropriately and cooperate to cripple the operations of the heathen Yen terrorists to insure this atrocity never repeats itself. The Legion shall move south, clearing out rebel cells and restoring order in Southern Almadis, which we have dubbed Operation Sandstorm. Upon completion of the operation, the Air Legion will offer support for continued operations by Her Majesty’s troops and the Legion will withdraw its forces back to Cerberus Base.”

The Air Legion has reportedly began to initiate strikes by unmanned drones on known rebel held targets. Air Legion drones have been equipped for close in air support operations to strike in support of the advancing Tarsan 5th Cohort. Though efficient, these drones have come under some criticism by prominent members of the minority coalition in the Synod due to the indiscriminate nature of their strikes. Five civilian deaths have been reported so far this month as the Air Legion has ramped up unmanned strikes against rebel targets since early August.

Mourning continues in Serekos today as several bystanders were gunned down by the attackers prior to the explosion. One Tarsan soldier on duty was injured by the gunmen as he moved in to halt the attack. We will continue to update you as the situation develops.

NO CONFIDENCE
Rúm delegates rebel as vote of no confidence brings down Lord Minister, NEPU suspends strike actions nationwide

FLASH POLL
Who will you vote for in the Æthic general election?

Eabd: 7%
Gebúr-Gisgu: 49%
Geþeódlio: 19%
Rúm: 4%
Don't Know: 21%
EDMOND - A coalition of 1,177 Delegates of the House of Delegates voted to dissolve the ruling Rúm government, forcing a general election in November and ousting current Lord Minister Douglass Wynstonn. Outages across the country had continued due to the strike, led by NEPU. The Allied Unions of Æthic Teachers voted for strike actions on September 9th in response to repeated outages.

Over 250 Rúm delegates from across the political spectrum voted against Wynstonn's government, nearly 40% of Rúm members in the House. Several Eabd members voted against the government as well. Wynstonn and his political allies attempted to block the vote and fought on before the suspension of debate, but with unanimous support from Gebúr-Gisgu, Geþeódlio and the Rúm defectors, over 60% of the House voted to remove Wynstonn as Lord Minister and accede to several NEPU demands, including pay increases and increased benefits.

The National Energy Producers Union suspended the months-long strike action, with thousands of workers returning to work at noon today. The Allied Unions of Æthic Teachers voted to suspend it's planned strike actions. Wynstonn's office stated, "This betrayal had thrust the country into a vortex of political uncertainty."

The King accepted the suspension of the House of Delegates and set a date for elections for November 15th. Hundreds of people celebrated the collapse of the government on the steps of the Drihtsele.

"The democratic system in Æthele was bent, but it survived," said Leader of the Opposition Jennifer Lawnstow of Gebúr-Gisgu. "Gebúr-Gisgu will be there to lead and take clear choices after we move on from this polarizing time."

Breaking: Tuluran Ministry of Defense Announces No-Fly Zone in Almadis, Deploys Land Forces to South Almadis
Tulura claims Tarsan airstrikes are indiscriminate and brutal against civilian Yen
By Ketem Saida, Correspondent in Tulura

Tuluran Troops, taken at an unidentified border village

ARIMAL - On August 25th Tarsan forces began pushing out of the Serekos Zone into the Yen countryside and south, seeking to root out Yen terrorist. The weeks of airstrikes and raids has created what a Yen Japhic man described as ‘Weeks of Terror’.

Meanwhile it started an intensive debate in Tulura, with President Sudem Mazras calling for a session of the National Assembly. Tensions reached their breaking point in Tulura when a Tarsan airstrike was told to have struck a Yen stronghold near the Tuluran border, 51km from the nearest Tuluran outpost, “Too close for comfort” Sudem Mazras simply stated when asked in a press conference on the 1st.

Yesterday, Sudem Mazras made a more pungent statement, “The Tarsan powers-that-be want to wage an anti-Yen crusade, it is why they continue to prop up a government which does not represent the majority Japhic country, but the Tarsan oligarchy.”

Today, Tulurans move across the border without announcement and the southern Almadi airspace in busy. United News was the first probe the Tulurans on their ongoings, “Protection of the Almadi People.” in the following hours, the world was briefed on the Tuluran terms:

  • A no fly zone over Southern Almadis, to be extended to all of Almadis.
  • The establishment of a cooperative transitional government.
  • The turnover of Azmera X of Candace, the Pretender of Almadis.
  • Arrest of Stergios Kontallis, Prime Minister of Almadis.
  • Tarsas removes all military personnel from outside the Serekos Zone immediately.

The Almadi Legion, a Tuluran mechanized unit, is currently seizing Yen villages. Confrontation or meeting with the Tarsan military has not yet been reported. Tuluran General, Fayaam Kutre Alemesh, declared Tuluran security over all jurisdictions outside of Serekos, saying that Tarsan armed forces have 24 hours to leave their current posting and retreat back to their original zones. Sudem Mazras tempered after the announcement, “This is to restore the status quo of the area to bring all parties to the table in peace.”

South Ayeli kickstart its "grand reforms"
09, 20, 2019

Image
Prime Minister Diwadi Gaduna during a Government meeting opened to the public. Photographer, Waya Tsiguni

Hamuilaqta, Ayeli — Since the results of the Collegial Election of March 2019, the Sovereign State of Ayeli, in opposition with the Democratic Republic of Ayeli in the north, has had big plans and projects for the island-nation. It has now been more than a year since the terrible earthquake and volcanic eruption that struck down Ayeli, killing thousands, displacing ten-time more people, and throwing the country in a downward spiral of political and economical crisis. Right now the division between a North and a South Ayeli, with thousands of militiamen and soldiers from each side amassed at the border that neither party officialy recognize, limit economic and social recovery by diverting funds and attentions away from the problems faced by the Ayelian peoples, who for the most part still rely heavily on foreign humanitarian aids.

It's this depressing situation that Mr.Gaduna and his government promised to change. Since March, he and his Ministers have been devicing a number of projects for the Economical Restructuration of Ayeli, studying various plans from land reforms, globalisation of farmer cooperatives, the creation of new industrial park... all these projects and more were under discussion and it seemed that, Gaduna's attention being focused on the political reunion of the Island, they would remain just that, projects, for quite a long time still.

Yet yesterday the Provisional Government published the final version of the Socio-economic Preservation and Restructuration Plan : a two hundred pages long document detailing Mr.Gaduna and his council's plans for the next five years. The document offers a lot of details, sometime in a very precise yet obscure and complicated bureaucratic language, but the main points are the following : the "plan" is divided into multiple stages, each with certain requirements and objectives. Each stage is supposed to build on top of the previous one, until the island has once again a full-fledged economy. The first stage is to begin next month, and is composed mostly of a land reform, nationalizing all farmlands that had been abandoned or left unattended after the earthquake. The Government has also announced the immediate start of a massive recruitment campaign with the aim to find thousands of potential farmers to tend these reclaimed lands in the form of cooperatives.

To finance this first stage of the project, the Provisional Government has taken a loan from various banks, essentially Mutuleses and Rezeses ones. It hopes to be able to repay these in the next 20 years, which might be a possibility if the plan is successful. Part of the money lended will also be used to start various financial ventures in the hope of obtaining more funds to compensate the lack of perceived taxes. It's part of the Governmnt aim with Phase 1, resettling communities and re-exploiting land in an efficient fashion, that they'll be able to re-collect taxes and use this returning stable income as a guarantee for the future bigger loans that their following projects will necessitate. Such as new infrastructures, new factories, new electric plants, and even a complete re-organisation of Hamuilaqta's urban planning to turn it into a true economic capital for Ayeli.

Already this ambitious project is meeting critics, worried or mocking the plan's ambitions, judging them irrealists and unfeasible in practice. Some consider it to be a straight road toward Socialism and total economic dependency on the Mutul, who is already the de-facto protector of Mr.Gaduna's government. Some Watchdogs are also concerned by what they consider a slow rise in nationalistic rethoric from South Ayeli and denounce the unexplained disparition of hundreds of political opponents and partisans of the General Elections from the then-called "Mutulese Humanitarian Zone". Even if the Mutulese army officialy left the island last spring, there's been a confirmed presence of Mutulese military advisors in South Ayeli who may have been organizing the state's militiamen into something ressembling an actual army, possibly in the hope of a future invasion of North Ayeli. Unfortunately, it remains extremely difficult to infirm or confirm any of these accusations or rumours, as the Island, both North and South, remain de-facto closed to any journalist not thoroughtly approved by either provisional governments. COMPLETION OF BENEJAABI HEADQUARTERS CELEBRATED, SIGN OF FUTURE TO COME?

Image
The headquarters of the State Capital Control Agency looms over the rugged landscape

RANGPUR – Shahdom of Benejaab In Benejaab, the Union’s troubled eastern neighbor, workers of the General Construction Bureau No. 6 prepare to return home after successful completion of the new headquarters of that nation’s State Capitol Control Agency. The project, which was scheduled initially for a period spanning six months, was completed in just five. Post construction cleanup was carried out over the last several days and was concluded with a celebration.

The project takes place amongst an ongoing effort to open Benejaab to trade and warm historically cool relations between the Shahdom and the Union. A large minority of the laborers involved, primarily unskilled, were locals apprenticing under a program top economists call “potentially vital to the modern blossoming of Benejaab”. Unionite crews, who worked alongside them, noted the locals’ quick adaption to modern construction techniques.

The Unionite government denies allegations that development efforts, primarily focused in and around Santosa, are ideologically motivated. This publication hopes that with the completion of the Agency headquarters in Rangpur, such slanderous lies will be laid to rest. More such projects have been proposed for sites across Benejaab, though negotiations are pending. Further allegations that money had been shifted to socialist freedom fighters in the region were furiously denied by the Bureau and were, after a thorough internal investigation, found to be false.

BREAKING: Skaldanian invasion, civil conflict erupting in Enyama
By Avelina Del Villar
September 21, 2019

Image
An Enyaman Ground Forces patrol watches for Skaldanian recon in Hakutochi. Photographer: Sada Risako

AKUTERA — Chaos has gripped the streets of cities throughout Enyama as yesterday's flashpoint appears to have ballooned into a full-blown international incident, the likes of which Norumbria has not seen for decades; in what appears to be an internal power struggle, Enyaman Internal Troops forces loyal to President Muratagi appear to have opened fire against both the Armed Forces of the North Star and the Enyaman Armed Forces, causing chaos which has made it hard to grasp exactly what has been happening in the dissolving rogue state. Before reports of combat at the border emerged late last night, most of Norumbria's eyes had been turned to the hostage crisis in Akutera, an all-out assault by terrorists in Akutera that resulted in the successful kidnapping of the Minister of Defense, Watanabe Keisho, as well as the deaths of seventeen other hostages and almost 150 soldiers and police.

The Beardless, a Skaldanian seperatist group of self-proclaimed freedom fighters, claimed responsibility for the attacks in a TV message and demanded that Muratagi Eijiro, the controversial President of Enyama, resign, and that Hakutochi state (also known as Ertoria) be allowed to leave Enyama. Shortly after the broadcast, and with no response from the government, reports began to come in later that afternoon of a standoff at the border of Skaldafen and Enyama which devolved into a three-way battle between the Enyaman Army, the Internal Troops, and Skaldanian rapid-deployment troops; footage from an hour later showed the Enyaman Asenbura on fire, having been apparently attacked by unknown assailants. This morning, an announcement finally arrived from the Enyaman government, when President Muratagi, broadcasting from a "deeply-hidden" bunker, announced that the nation had entered into open war with Skaldafen and the "treasonous" Enyaman Armed Forces, and that the EAF had attacked the Asenbura and destroyed the government.

Image
Grand Marshal Ashikaga, left, and President Muratagi, right, have both called to the international community for support.

Many international third parties, including the Forum of Nations, have disputed Muratagi's claims, siding with counter-claims by the commander of the Enyaman Armed Forces, Grand Marshal Ashikaga Shinzo, who insinuates that Muratagi instituted a purge of the military and government, which appears to have partially failed. Grand Marshal Ashikaga and President Muratagi both have called for international support towards their respective factions, leading to many observers declaring a state of civil war in Enyama. There also continue to be rampant reports of banditry and human rights violations being carried out by Muratagi's forces, coming off of almost a decade of harsh international criticism levied towards the mistreatment of Enyama's Skaldanian and Latin minorities and increasingly blatant authoritarian policies instituted by the New Frontier government.

The situation in Enyama finds itself complicated by the armed response from Skaldafen, as forces from Enyama's southern neighbor and declared "enemy nation" invaded Enyama at several locations after the border scuffle, and are reported to have severely crippled the Enyaman Navy; despite the continued conflict, Grand Marshal Ashikaga has asked Skaldafen to leave Enyama and let Muratagi be overthrown via self-determination. Other regional powers also appear to be reacting to the crisis, with Enyama's southern ally Belfras apparently mobilizing troops northward in response to the Skaldanian invasion. It still appears to be too soon to discern the details of the flashpoint, and all of the parties that are involved in it, but as of today, it's looking bleak for northern Norumbria, and especially for Muratagi's New Frontier government.

Anti-Monarchy protests erupt throughout Gran Aligonia

By: Lorenzo Novoa
18 October 2019

VILLA ROMERA - After increasing unrest in recent decades between the high-income upper class and the lower class which mostly consists of migrant workers and farmers, the Principality of Gran Aligonia has been engulfed by large-scale, organized anti-monarchical protests. Such protests have not been uncommon for the island tax haven; previous unrests in 1956 and 2004 led to some restriction to the power of the Prince and subsequent increases in the legislative and democratic power of the Grand Ministry. Despite the earlier appeasement of anti-monarchical forces, it appears that the Prince has yet to shake his critics. Leuter Sion, the leader of the Aligonian Alliance of Free Thought, as well as the Bishop of the Dioscese of Villa Romera, Hugo Marin, have come out in support of the protests under the condition that they remain nonviolent, as have some more radical socialist elements, including the Migrant Worker's Union of Aligonia.

Criticism of the monarchy hasn't been helped by a percieved aimlessness in its affirmations after the death of Duke Vixillio Abellán this March; his son, Veremundo Abellán, has caught flak for a percieved appeasment of Tarsas and has been accused of leading a decadent, careless lifestyle by the opposition. His son and heir to Gran Aligonia, Verucio Abellán, has notably been engaged to Soraya bint Qaid Al Ruweyn, a Fahrani princess, but has struggled to shake off a reputation of being a chronic gambler, womanizer, and drug addict. The protests have also drawn their fair share of criticism, particularly from rich Aligonians and foreign nationals living in Gran Aligonia, including the nation's Yisraeli minority. The fact that the Bishop of Villa Romera voiced support for the protests came as a shock to many in the Aligonian Fabrian community, with many of them calling for the Bishop to be investigated for socialist conspiracies and links with the International Democratic Revolution and internationalist Socialist groups. Similar accusations have also been levied against the AAFT, though Sion has denounced the claims of socialist assistance, citing that the party has operated strictly within legal bounds for its entire existence.

As of today, the protests seem to only grow in mass, leaving many among the nation's richest to raise into question the legality of the protests; many nobles and foreign nationals have been observed deploying private security forces around their mansions and properties, a move that Director-General Segura of the Gran Aligonian Xendarmería has called "reckless" and "inflammatory"; no official comment has come from the Prince or the House of Abellán as of yet, though many expect the Prince to deliver a speech addressing the concerns of the protest by the end of the weekend; the Xendarmería has set up checkpoints throughout the nation to monitor the flow of traffic around the protests and prevent dangerous weapons, such as molotov cocktails or tear gas canisters, to make their way into the still-peaceful demonstration. For foriegners and nations with a mutually beneficial relationship to the island tax haven, the sunny island has begun to be an increasingly unstable investment.

VILLA ROMERA, GRAN ALIGONIA - Today, thousands of Aligonian citizens protested in several cities of the archipelago demanding more political rights. The protests were mainly organized by the Aligonian Alliance of Free Thought and the Migrant Worker’s Union of Aligonia - which has many Lusittians as core members - as well as several other groups. Despite many of these groups has its ideologies and different solutions that range from reformists ones to even revolutionary, all of them demanded more popular participation over legislative and executive affairs of the Principality along with the reduction of government powers held by the Prince Veremundo of the House of Abellán and by local oligarchies.

The protests of the today are the biggest ones since the unrests of 2004 and 1956, which also demanded more democratic rights and led to less royal control over the government.

According to the Director-General of the Aligonian gendarmerie, no major incident happened in the protests and everything went peacefully, with no extreme use of force of the police being used against possible rioters. However, as a precautionary measure to avoid the proliferation of dangerous weapons, the police has set up checkpoints through the entire nation in a move that many saw as too radical and exaggerated. Another question that raised concerns to the Aligonian police was the reaction of some upper-class citizens that decided to contract private security to protect themselves against possible radicals, which only produced more tension between those groups. Overall, no violent unrest occurred or is speculated to happen in the next days.

In the island of Porta Mobria, where Lusittia has an operant military base, a small protest happened but no conflict occurred with the police as well, making the security level of the base be at normal standards. It’s expected, however, an increase over the security of the base and its adjacent areas due to the exceptional circumstances that the archipelago is suffering.

Until now, neither the Prince Veremundo nor the Aligonian Government released any statement about the protests, although many expect a speech addressing the events of today.

» What’s the reason behind these protests?

The Principality of Gran Aligonia always was known for its oligarchical political system supported by high-class citizens, nobles and rich foreign minorities. However, over the last years, the maintenance of this system started to become even harder since the majority of the population - which is composed by the urban middle-class, workers and farmers - turned into adherents of more reformist or revolutionary ideologies as a way to bring democratic concepts into the Aligonian society.

Therefore, republican ideals from Lusittia and Mont-Çyr as well as varied socialist principles managed to win thousands of followers in the past years thus the demand of more reforms and the criticism of the current state of the monarchy became even more popular topics.

Things started to deteriorate even more when the traditionalist Prince Virxilio of Abellán died in March of this year, with his son Veremundo being unable to hold the stability that his father had to contain the eruption of these protests. Another polemic inside the Aligonian royal family is the behaviour and reputation that the Prince’s son, Verucio, have publicly, being known to be a drug addict and a gambler. This, as well as several other scandals in the nobility and royal family along with low political participation from the lower classes, is considered the main reason for the protests of today.

» Lusittian reaction

Lusittia was one of the first countries to be hit by the repercussion of today’s protests and soon became the principal subject discussed today. Due to the nature of the protests that are essentially against the current Aligonian economic policy, several markets throughout Scipia closed today in a down - including the Castelonovo Stock Market - in what is considered to happen over the next days if the protests continue as well.

Politically, the situation in Aligonia is extremely delicate to Lusittia since both countries have friendly relations and are allies, however, what is supported by the protesters fits into what is supported by the Lusittian government too, which could cause some discomfort between the relationship of both nations. Until now, no official statement was released by the Prime Minister’s Office or the Secretary of Foreign Affairs regarding the crisis, but Rita Maynard is likely going to address the situation soon. Although the government didn’t talk anything yet, many politicians and its political parties released statements over the day, sending its support to either the protesters, the government or any other specific group. The Socialist Bloc, along with its leader and current MP Clara Martins, issued their support to the Migrant Worker’s Union of Aligonia and the protesters' cause, showing support to the implementation of a republic in Gran Aligonia. This statement became polemical since the Socialist Bloc is a member of the coalition government alongside Maynard’s SDP, which could raise some even more tensions between the two governments.

The Social Democratic Party, on the other hand, followed the same steps of its leader and decided to not pronounce about the protests until the government proceeds to do the same, however, it’s also feasible that some of the SDP MPs in the Public Assembly are going to support radical changes on the Aligonian political system such as the limitation of royal powers or even a republic as the Socialist Bloc proposed.

Other political parties from the opposition such as the Nacional Conservative Union didn’t speak anything about the matter, yet, many presume that the UCN is going to support the current status quo but with some democratic reforms such as the introduction of a constitutional monarchy instead of a semi-constitutional one. If this happens to be true, the Aligonian government could be pressed down by one of its most important allies to enact crucial reforms to avoid a possible radicalization of these protests - a move that is highly polemical and could profoundly change the relations of both countries.

» What’s going to happen next?

If today’s protests continue over the next days and weeks, Aligonia could be under two possible paths, as the professors of international relations from the University of Pinheiros Theresa Montserrat and Hugo Bomjardim states. According to Mrs Montserrat, although Prince Veremundo seems to be a reformist, the most logical way to Aligonia now is to become a republic: "Despite the reforms that Veremundo is willing to approve as a way to modernize the country, the Aligonian political system is incompatible to such reforms so almost nothing will be made, hence why the protests will continue and public trust in the monarchy will fall." Mrs Montserrat also asserts that the possible Lusittian influence over the protests will be another reason to why the monarchy will be abolished: "Unlike 1956 and 2004 - where Lusittia seemed to be apathetic to the protests at all and made nothing that could improve the Aligonian democracy - our country is now ruled by a leftist, hard-line republican group with considerable support of the Lusittian population. It’s obvious that Lusittia is going to support such Aligonian republican groups, and this support is going to be a critic factor that will lead to the destabilisation of the monarchy, leaving a republic as the only viable solution to the end of this crisis."

Notwithstanding Mrs Montserrat’s affirmation, Mr Bomjardim tends to deny this, stating that a republic is unlikely to happen, however, that doesn’t mean that severe democratic reforms will need to be enacted by the Prince and Grand Ministry: "The Aligonian political system was built in a way that the monarchy will always persevere and, with a Prince apt to do the reforms that are necessary for the country, it’s very unlikely that a radical option that is a republic will occur unless the Aligonian state uses the force against its citizens or don’t do such reforms at all."

Although both have some discrepancies about their thoughts, the two can’t deny that the crisis in Aligonia is just one of the several crises that devasted the world this year - from Enyama to Tulura - as Mrs Montserrat says: "What we are seeing in 2019 is the end of many establishments around the world - from the fall of Enyaman regime to massive riots in Tulura and now protests in Gran Aligonia. Despite these events aren’t necessarily connected, it shows that it’s likely that many regimes and old orders in the world are going to disappear in the next years, and new ones will appear over the next decade. It’s going to be a time of change never seen in years, and it will bring with itself a lot of conflicts that are going to be scattered around the world."

Official statement from the Lusittian Government regarding the protests in Gran Aligonia

In virtue of the protests that occurred on the Principality of Gran Aligonia over the course of the week, the Lusittian Government, through its Secretary of Foreign Affairs, deeply wishes a quickly but peaceful end for this crisis that surely will cause profound damages in the regional trade, tourism and economy of the continent of Scipia if extended.

As a nation founded under the principles of liberty, the Lusittian Government would like to reiterate its commitment to democratic causes around the world and hopes that the Aligonian State hears the popular will and reconsider the foundations of its political system, therefore allowing the participation of the Aligonian population on the national political debate and over crucial decisions that will affect the life of such. It should be the utmost objective of the Aligonian Government let the people decide the future of their nation by giving to them the right to decide the current status of its head of state - be it to remain with the status quo or to approve more drastic measures such as the implementation of a republic - as well as the current legislative and executive procedures determined by the Carta Magna.

Neither the President of the Republic nor the Prime Minister and her Cabinet condones the use of any kind of violence by Aligonian public security forces against peaceful protesters in future demonstrations.

Amid calls for abdication, an assassination attempt, and political chaos, Prince Veremundo delivers speech denouncing protests and their supporters

By: Lorenzo Novoa
31 October 2019

VILLA ROMERA - The situation in Gran Aligonia has grown increasingly chaotic as the protests enter their third week, only encouraged by support offered by various international actors including Lusittia, Ostrozava, and Pulau Keramat. Specifically, the unexpected support of Lusittia, itself controlled by a left-leaning democratic coalition, apparently troubled various loyalists among the "Big Five" families in Gran Aligonia, causing Prince Veremundo to postpone his planned address on the protests by more than a week due to "grave geopolitical concerns". The admission did the Gran Aligonian economy no favors, with the previously-isolated Villa Romera Stock Market dropping a record 694.2 points, the most in recorded Aligonian history since the early 1900s. Loyalist political elements within Gran Aligonia, however, remain adamant about the continuation of the monarchy, with Duke Alexandre del Villar of Tarraro, the chief critic of the House of Abellán, calling for the Prince's immediate abdication and a "convening of nobility" for the selection of a new ruling family. Del Villar's demand is not without precedent; the House of Abellán replaced the defunct House of Oberlia in 1950, which had ruled since the 17th century.

Despite the nobility's fracturing around support for the unpopular House of Abellán, protestors have remained adamant that all nobility are to reliquish their titles per the demands of the demonstration. Leuter Sion, the leader of the Aligonian Alliance of Free Thought, welcomed Lusittian support of the protests, though, in an internet post, he urged the protestors, particularly "the most dejected of us, such as the Migrant Worker's Union", to "steer clear of extremist action and thought; this is the breaking point, the time to prove the character of the various peoples of Gran Aligonia." Some minor violence has erupted, largely as a result of clashes between protestors trying to enter Villa Romera's financial district, and the local riot line provided jointly by private security employed by casinos and the Aligonian Xendarmeria. One contractor and one protestor were severely injured yesterday in a mishap involving a molotov cocktail, which has spurred Director-General Segarra to urge "immediate restraint, especially by private security forces."

Today, Prince Veremundo's planned speech was finally released, and it's transcript is as follows:

People of Gran Aligonia,

It has become clear to me in recent days that this is set to be a time of great national upheaval in Gran Aligonia, and I want to take time today to address issues that my father and his predecessors were largely silent on. We in Villa Romera's hills have nothing but love to offer for those frustrated in a great time of need and cultural change such as this, and I am aware of your grievances; you have accused me of flirting with the "enemy", that is to say, allowing Tarsan and Yisraeli investment back into Gran Aligonia. You have accused me of holding a weak stance on labor reform and the uplifting of the non-noble within Gran Aligonia.

Yet, I am none of those things. This speech, or rather, this segment of it, was written long ago, and yet I see now that even those who share our blood, our brothers to the south in Lusittia, have seen fit to point fingers instead of solve problems. I assure you that this blame cannot be, in anybody's right mind, laid on me. Gran Aligonia has rested in a complex geopolitical and cultural situation since the first trading kingdoms of antiquity, and now it again sees itself threatened by lies and naysayers. Do not believe those who say I do not have the will to act; I have the will, but not the way. I cannot perform charity if those who refuse to be generous, such as Duke Del Villar, refuse to participate. The problem is not in our God-given system, despite what our revisionist Bishop may say; it is in the people who seek only to benefit themselves, and not everyone. And the problem is not in turning old enemies into new friends, as I have successfully done with Tarsas, but it is our old conceptions of them, as boogeymen, as evil, as not-us, that prompts such a response.

I feel that I have not been adequate in demonstrating my resolve for all of Gran Aligonia's citizens in this area, and so, I wish to apologize. I will not concede to the egregious and undoubtedly socialist demands of the protest, but I am willing to consider immediate labor reform, and I am willing to launch investigations into those who have suggested I abdicate. Our system works! It is not perfect, for it has indeed allowed for the growth of greed, but it works!

The speech cut off abruptly after the statement, and the Director-General released a shocking statement an hour later stating that the Xendarmeria had successfully foiled a plot to assassinate the Prince by unknown assailants; the Prince and all members of his family were unharmed, with the assailants managing to cut the power to the Prince's Grand Villa (and thus, to the camera recording the speech) and then being immediately thwarted by Royal Guardsmen on duty in the wine cellar. Two Royal guardsmen were killed, alongside six assailants; it is unknown how many were injured, or if all assailants were killed, but the Director-General has gone on to note that, as of this afternoon, it appears the situation is stable, and a full investigation has been launched into the identity of the "cowardly attackers", which were supposedly using military-grade AR36 assault rifles of Tarsan origin.

Deeper into the city, as the protests rage on, many have found solidarity in their labor strike, with several impromptu parties and parades happening in areas of the city within protestor control; apparently, in the Grand Leauge Park, adjacent to the Romera Canal, about 10,000 protestors burned a giant effigy of Prince Veremundo while chanting traditional labor songs, and, at one point, the Lusittian national anthem. Protests are ongoing, and international observers fear for the stability of the situation; Duke Del Villar has refused to comment on the political aspects of the Prince's address, but has denounced the assassination attempt as a "cowardly socialist ploy".

Feldman Calls For Order, Stability, Continuity In Gran Aligonia, Rebuking Nations Supporting Anti-Monarchy Protests

The statement and warning from the President of Yisrael comes on the heels of similar signaling from other Belisarian and Scipian nations, most prominently Latium.
October 31st, 2019| By Binyomin Eisenberger (beisenberg@ryd.org) | 4:06pm EDT

YERUSHALAYIM, YISRAEL — President Noah Feldman addressed the growing political crisis in Gran Aligonia, urging "order, stability, and continuity" as the anti-monarchy protests there continue to drag on days after their origin. "The island country of Gran Aligonia has known peace for almost seventy years," Feldman said, adding, "We here in Yisrael urge patience and prudence."

The anti-monarchy protests erupted on October 18th and have now hit their third week, with increasing reports of violence and scuffles between state and private security forces and the mostly-leftist protestors. More troubling to Yisraeli and other foreign leaders, however, is the open and shameless encouragement of the protests: radical political-regime change. The Government of Lusittia, a nearby mainland Scipian state with some cultural ties to the GA and a republic itself, urged that the Principality accede to the protestors' demands and abolish the princely government, a brazen encouragement of the protests that Feldman condemned as "provocative and out-and-out incitement." Other states such Ostrozava and Pulau Keramat, both left-leaning regimes, have voiced similar sentiments. The President warned the Lusittian leadership, saying, "Yisrael and other Periclean nations will not tolerate the overthrow of monarchies along the Periclean fringe nor will we permit the violent ouster of stable and orderly governments in favor of revolutionary leftist regimes. Tread carefully in your rhetoric."

Political Factions On Gran Aligonia, Explained

The political situation on the Aligonian isles are affected by several broad factions at work amid the tension.

First, the pro-monarchy groups. There is the Government of the Principality, under the leadership of Prince Veremundo, the head of state. He and a couple of the "Big Five" high noble families support the status quo - an absolute monarchy with certain limitations dating back to protests in 1956 and 2004. This faction, the Loyalists, favor Latium, the Belisarian monarchies (excluding Tarsas), and the Belisarian Community. It has control over most of the state apparatus and military and security forces.

Opposed to the Absolutists are the Reformists - a bloc of more moderate high noble families that favor a geopolitical pivot towards Scipia, continued open economic ties to Yisrael and Tarsas, and the implementation of a constitutional monarchy. They control a substantial portion of private security forces and foreign defense contractors on the island with some influence over the government bureaucracy.

Second, the anti-monarchy factions. All broadly leftist, they want the princely government abolished and a republic installed in Gran Aligonia. There are three main groups backing the protests - the Aligonian Alliance of Free Thought, a liberal-left intellectual movement, the Christian socialist bloc led by Bishop Hugo Marin of the Dioscese of Villa Romera, and the Migrant Worker's Union, a more radicalized trade union that counts many ethnic Lusittians among its ranks. They do not appear to have any sway within the government, but there are reports of foreign left-wing activists who have come to the GA as an act of solidarity with the protests and who could be used to overwhelm state and private armed forces.

Gran Aligonia Becoming a Powderkeg

The islands are increasingly becoming what some analysts are calling a "fortress island," as hundreds of foreign private defense contractors and mercenaries are alleged to have been hired and brought to Aligonia to protect the private property of the nobility and major corporations.

Among these are several companies of defense contractors of the Roth Group subsidiary the Pyrion Defense Group. A spokesman for the Roth Group confirmed that "we have several clients on Gran Aligonia who are using the defense services of our subsidiary Pyrion because of recent political instability there. They are in full compliance with Yisraeli and Aligonian law."

The Roth Group is hardly alone. Defense contractors from all across Fahran as well as Tarsas are present, as well as rumors of underworld criminal thugs, mercenaries, and other seedy elements both local and from eastern Belisaria and beyond being on-site.

Local Aligonian media has reported that across the divide, a number of protestor groups have started arming themselves with unconventional or makeshift weapons as violence has become increasingly common between the opposing forces. Director-General Illiomarus Segarra, the commander of the Aligonian Xendarmeria, alerted the public that "[p]rotestors have been increasingly non-compliant with our request that they remain out of high-security areas - we have been seeing protestors armed with clubs, bats, and molotov cocktails. I urge you to be cautious if you are in the street."

"The situation is getting out of hand," Feldman concluded his press conference, "we urge all to remain peaceful and orderly."

AUTHOR'S UPDATE (11:03am): Prince Veremundo narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a televised speech calling for the end of the protests and defending the princely government's history and policies. A Presidential Palace spokesman condemned the act and reiterated President Feldman's earlier speech.

AUTHOR'S UPDATE (4:06pm): Director-General Segarra released a clarification on the earlier reports: "According to our investigation, they were not, as it seemed at first glance, trying to shoot the Prince, but rather they were planting a VX gas bomb to be detonated on a timer to go off in a month in the wine cellar, and our forces caught them during the setup of the explosive. It has been successfully disarmed and the perpetrators are all deceased from the firefight."

Binyomin Eisenberger reported from Yerushalayim, Yisrael. None of these organizations are associated with the RYD, and all opinions and personal views in the article do not reflect the viewpoints of the RYD or their employees.

Latin Officials Calls for Calm in Gran Aligonia
Forum, Castellum ab Alba
By: John Afinius (@RAL)

Forum, Castellum: Days ago the Lusittian government was among the first nations to offer support for the protestors in Gran Aligonia. Since, others have voiced their support for the protesters, leading to further demonstrations and emboldened protests which have thus far resulting in clashes with authorities and private security. These clashes ultimately led to an assassination attempt on Prince Veremundo, which was thwarted by Royal Guardsmen. The brazen attack resulted in the deaths of six assailants, as well as two Guardsmen.

Since the outbreak of upheaval, Latin officials have thus far remained silent. Many sources have confirmed that the Emperor and his staff have been “fully briefed” and have kept a “constant eye on the ongoing situation.” Foreign Magistrate The Duke of Narona broke Latin silence on the crisis, asking both sides to come together for a “meaningful and peaceful resolution” for all parties.

The Duke of Narona has called upon foreign nations to cease further disrupting the “delicate balance” that has thus far prevented large scale violence between protesters and police or government forces. “These statements have thus far proved to be a catalyst for the escalation in not only tensions between the various factions involved, but also objective escalation in violence which culminated in the attempt on [Prince Veremundo’s] life.” He went on to call for unity among the Aligonian people, reiterating that “peace and stability [in Gran Aligonia] is paramount. Latium will always stand behind and support the people and government of Gran Aligonia.”

Narona singled out Lusittia as a nation whose words have caused the situation to further escalate. His comments were expanded upon later by a spokesperson from the Foreign Bureau. “[T]he motives behind the actions of these foreign governments are perfectly transparent. Instead of calling for a peaceful resolution to the benefit of all parties, they urge the Aligonian government to give into radicals instead of hold a dialogue with reformers.”

Latium has been allies with Gran Aligonia since its liberation from Yisraeli forces in 1950, and has since been responsible for island principality’s defense. It currently maintains a military base near the Aligonian city of Sidora.

Update: High Commissioner of the Belisarian Community Florentine Verruscosus spoke briefly on the crisis unfolding in Gran Aligonia. His comments largely mirrored those of Latin Foreign Magistrate Narona, though primarily focused economics. “The Community, its member nations, its citizenry and the Aligonians have benefited from nearly a three-quarters century of economic growth, investment, and ever growing cultural ties that bind us together for a stronger Periclean. I have no doubt that the Aligonian people and government can solve the issues in front of it in a peaceful way to benefit all parties. Furthermore, I urge The Prince, his supporters, reformers, and protesters to meet and work together towards peace and a stable Gran Aligonia.”

FALL OF THE EAGLE? GOVERNMENT OF GRAN ALIGONIA ON ITS KNEES!

Image
Foreign Minister Rigzin Dharma: "It's time for the prince to step down and the five ruling families to cede power to the proletariat."

VILLA ROMERA - GRAN ALIGONIA For more than three weeks now, revolutionary unrest has bubbled in the formerly sleepy Principality of Gran Aligonia. After centuries of reactionary and autocratic rule under a succession of dynasties, the people of the small city-state have finally begun to rise up against what experts call "nauseating inequality and an increasingly authoritarian regime." Prince Veremundo, who rules over the island as a dictator, has rejected all calls to step down. With the prince having narrowly avoided an assassination attempt, the situation teeters on the edge of full scale revolution.

Though their claims have been rejected by regime's controlled opposition, the brave peoples of Gran Aligonia have called for the immediate abdication of the king, the immediate and permanent relinquishing of all titles of nobility, the establishment of a republic, and the organization of free and fair elections to determine the new government. Historically, the reactionary regime has been impervious to the people's rage, beating them into place with the gendarmes or and ignoring them. The stability of the regime is based around the mutual support of the island's five families, each a more violent and corrupt group of gangsters than the last. However, this stability appears to have fractured as multiple representatives of the various aristocratic factions call for Prince Veremundo's abdication, though no clear successor has emerged yet.

The economy of Gran Aligonia, based around shipping, tourism, and helping the global capitalist oligarchy escape taxation, continues to free fall amidst a spiraling political crisis and a growing worker's strike that already numbers more than one hundred thousand. As part of an official statement, the Union's Foreign Minister, the honorable comrade Rigzin Dharma, echoed the protesters' demands for immediate democratic change. He would go on to say that "[. . .] the people of the Union stand in solidarity with the struggling peoples of Gran Aligonia in their fight for basic human rights. It's time for the corrupt regime in that country to come to an end, before it's too late and the island becomes wracked by bloodshed."

Left Fractures Ahead of 2020 Election As New Party Splits Off From Con-Libs, Potentially Creating Three-Way Race

The dramatic splinter of one of the Con-Libs' most promising rising stars to form his own party is reverberating across the political spectrum, potentially upending the traditional two-party presidential contest and even realigning the Knesset's ideological blocs.
November 14, 2019| By Binyomin Eisenberger (beisenberg@ryd.org) | 8:14am EDT

YERUSHALAYIM, YISRAEL — Just a week after Reuven Goldschmidt announced he was leaving the Constitutional Liberal Party to form his own centrist party, the Alternative for Yisrael, and run for president, the political landscape in Yisrael has become unsettled. The January 27, 2020 presidential and Knesset elections are just over two months away, but the two-party presidential race between Royalist Conservative Party nominee (and current Foreign Minister) Yitzchok Katz and the Con-Libs' nominee Yosef Kaduri (MK-Netanya) is on the verge of collapsing amid a centrist revolt.

Goldschmidt Enters Presidential Race And Runs Knesset List

At a press conference last Thursday, Goldschmidt, age 55, a Member of Knesset from Modiin, shocked the Yerushalayim political class by announcing his departure from the Constitutional Liberals and formation of his own, self-described "centrist" party - the Alternative for Yisrael. Goldschmidt was considered a rising star among the Gold Bloc, having flipped a swing seat in the Eastern District from the Conservatives in 2014 and fending off both the Blues and the growing centrist Action Yisrael in the subsequent 2016 and 2018 elections by wider and wider margins.

In his speech exiting the party, Goldschmidt remarked, "I did not leave the Constitutional Liberal Party - it left me. Every year, it seems to embrace more and more foreign ideas that have no place in Yisrael. I have personally observed numerous party leaders, including Members of Knesset, alluding to being secret secularists. My former party no longer represents who I am. I believe the government can have a positive, active role in making our lives better, but we must remember that all we have comes from Hashem [G-d]. I will no longer stay party to a faction that quietly rejects the foundation of our very country."

His remarks are widely interpreted as a shot at the Con-Lib nominee, Yosef Kaduri - who hails from the Golds' left-wing, identifies proudly as Chiloni, and has faced at least three separate investigations by the Civil Guard, the Special Political Police, and the Security Service dating from his college years for various alleged political and ideological crimes. Kaduri has denied all accusations, and successfully used the would-be scandals to rally the left-flank of the Con-Lib base in the party's presidential primary to win the nomination in September.

Goldschmidt's departure took with him nine sitting Con-Lib MKs as well. The new cadre of ex-Con-Libs registered with the Secretary of the Knesset on Monday to officially form the caucus of the Alternative for Yisrael, reducing the Gold Bloc's seats in Knesset from 42 to 32.

Election law in the Eastern District permit sitting members of Knesset to both run for re-election as well as run for President, with the caveat that the candidate must resign from the second office if he wins both contests. Goldschmidt, should he fail in his third-party long-shot presidential bid, would still maintain his Knesset seat if voters re-elect him separately in the Knesset elections.

The splinter move has riled the Con-Libs, the home of most of the Yisraeli political left-of-center outside of the far-left, which inhabits the third-tier party the Alliance of Greens, Seculars, and Workers. Beyond the nine ex-Con-Libs who defected to Goldschmidts' party, several current, past, and future candidates that the Constitutional Liberals were eying for Knesset, District, and local office have put their names forward on a party list of Knesset candidates announced by the Alternative for Yisrael earlier today. Most of the newly-minted AfY MKs represent swing seats in the Central and Eastern Districts.

Action Yisrael, In Sign of Trouble for the Right, Flirts With Endorsing Goldschmidt

Conservative Party nominee Yitzchok Katz, the first Chareidi candidate of a major party in history - has sparked unease within the current, unwieldy Conservative-led coalition in the Knesset, which includes the center-right/middle-income-interests Action Yisrael and far-right Northern League. The Grays, already unhappy with having to sit with the far-right, have bristled in recent weeks after Katz clinched the Conservative nomination. Katz has vowed to bring the Chareidi Bloc into the Blue coalition, upsetting the largely Masorti-oriented centrist party, who often finds itself in opposition to the religious enforcement and kollel subsidies that the Torah Achdus party advocates, believing it takes away from transportation needs and middle-income subsidies and tax reductions.

Since Katz became the nominee and outlined a firmly bold right-wing, religious, and nationalist agenda, the Action Yisrael leadership had begun to question whether they would again cross-endorse the Conservatives in the presidential contest. With Goldschmidt's entry into the political center, the Grays have hedged their bets and reportedly are in talks to cross-endorse the AfY, creating a left v. center v. right race for president, the first of its kind.

Fresh Polling Suggests United Center Hurts Both Sides, But Left More

Two polls conducted this week suggest Goldschmidt may have hit some political gold, scoring nearly a quarter of the vote in the presidential race and for a "united center" bloc in Knesset right out of the gate, an astounding showing for a candidate untested in national politics.

The first survey, a poll of likely voters conducted by the Channel 10 TV station, found that in a three-way race, the Conservative Katz earned 38%, the AfY's Goldschmidt garnered 26%, to the Con-Lib Kaduri's 24%, with 12% undecided. In this study, the left bloc in Knesset takes a large hit: the Conservatives earn 52 seats ( -7 currently), the Constitutional Liberals 28 seats (-4), Torah Achdus 17 seats (+1), Action Yisrael 15 seats (+3), Alternative for Yisrael 20 seats (+10), the Alliance of Greens, Seculars, and Workers 4 seats (-4) and the Northern League 6 seats (+1).

In this outcome, the right bloc (Conservatives, Torah Achdus, Northern League) have 75 seats, 3 more than the majority-making 72-seat threshold. The left bloc (Con-Libs, Alliance) would have 32 seats. The new "united center" bloc (AY, AfY) would have 35 seats, edging out the left to make it the chief opposition. However, the Torah Achdus and Northern League have ruled out joining a coalition together given foreign policy and other disagreements, so the normal calculus may not work out so cleanly.

The second survey, a poll of registered voters paid for by the Zman Yisrael national daily newspaper, showed that in a traditional two-party head-to-head Katz (47%) beats Kaduri (41%), with 9% undecided. However, when Goldschmidt is included under a "united center" scenario, Katz garners only 40%, to Kaduri's 31% and Goldschmidt's 22%, with 6% undecided.

The Zman Yisrael poll found all minor right and left parties suffer losses with the main center, right, and left parties gaining more vote share: the Conservatives net 61 seats ( +2 currently), the Constitutional Liberals 34 seats (+2), Torah Achdus 15 seats (-1), Action Yisrael 13 (+1), Alternative for Yisrael 13 (+3), the Alliance of Greens, Seculars, and Workers 2 (-6) and the Northern League 4 (-1). In this sample, the right bloc could easily form a majority with 76 seats excluding the Northern League's 4 seats, the left bloc comes in at 36 seats, and the new center bloc falls a bit behind the left at 26 seats.

The 2020 elections may presage an ideological fracture in Yisrael's dominant two-party system if Goldschmidt can successfully form an "united center" and increase his polling in the next two months before Election Day.

BELOJARDIM - In a regional visit to discuss future election plans with the city mayor Frederico Arraes, Rita Maynard released three hundred popular homes as part of the National Housing Program, which aims to build and release more than five thousand residences by the end of 2022. During the inauguration ceremony, the prime minister was asked by journalists about the official government position regarding the Aligonian protests and what are going to be the next steps that she and her party will follow, as well as her thoughts about the statement issued by her cabinet colleague and leader of the Socialist Bloc Clara Martins, who proposed the implementation of a republic as a way to end the crisis:

“About the government’s official position, we are doing the possible and impossible to contain violent protests that could lead to more destructive unrests. We all know the importance that Gran Aligonia has to the Scipian economy as well as the fact that Lusittia always supported democratic movements around the world. Therefore, it’s pure jerkiness let the people suffer in the way that is suffering and risk the integrity of Scipian and Belisarian markets by enabling the radicalization of those protesters and cause a serious economic and social damage to the region as a whole. Our stance is to support the reforms that are essential and avoid unnecessary radicalization,” she replied. “Regarding Mrs Martins’ statement, she left it clear that this is her party position that doesn’t reflect the government’s posture, so this isn’t my problem.”

When asked about what she thinks of the statement made by the Yisraeli President Noah Feldman days ago, Maynard seemed to be sarcastic and hostile: “A nation who brutally invaded Aligonia think that has the right to talk about this issue. Really?” she said, making some journalists laugh. “Honestly, Feldman’s statement is offensive and ridiculous, since it doesn’t help with anything at all and only contributes to the radicalization of both sides. He seems to be more worried about his futile attempt to expand the Yisraeli zone of influence than help and propose a solution to this.”

However, regarding both Latin and Aligonian responses, the prime minister took a less aggressive approach and went further than that as she proposed a meeting to better discuss the situation: “About the declarations released by the Duke of Narona and Prince Veremundo, I want to reiterate that Lusittia isn’t trying to incite any violent overthrow of any government in the world, especially from a close ally that it is Gran Aligonia. Instead, we are recommending the most peaceful option and, as I said before, avoid unnecessary radicalization of the protesters. In fact, I would like to propose a meeting to seriously discuss the crisis and reach an agreement that surely will benefit everyone.”

After the brief press conference and the end of the ceremony, the prime minister left Belojardim and returned to the Villasboas Palace in Castelonovo, where it’s likely that she will have another reunion with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Patrício Buarque.

» João Sócrates: “Peace must always reign”

Leader of the UCN and candidate for the upcoming elections in 2020, João Sócrates and his party remained silent in the first weeks of the Aligonian protests mostly because of the contrasting views that many internal factions had regarding the crisis, however, after meetings between members and other conservative figures, the party finally entered into an agreement.

After urging calm on both sides, Sócrates said that peace must “always reign” and declared that he is against any “unnecessary use of force” in the region. Concerning the protests itself, the MP said that his party will support any peaceful democratic change, but will not tolerate Lusittian attempts to destabilize “Aligonian politics and principles” as well as support “violent, radical groups.”

When asked about what the Aligonian Government should do, he replied: “In my opinion, the best thing that Prince Veremundo and his government could do is hear the protesters and try to reach a compromise where the two sides win. However, this is their problem and we shouldn’t intervene in the way that we are intervening over foreign issues. This is imperialist and doesn’t follow our doctrines.”

Sócrates’ declaration is received with relief by many Lusittian and Aligonian conservatives who still support the status quo on the island, as many political analysts commented over the week the possibility that the UCN are going to support more radical changes in the Aligonian political system under the same mentality of Rita Maynard’s PSD. With a more conciliatory speech that appeals to moderate protesters and royalists, it’s possible that the international community are going to support the UCN position rather than the government one.

» The situation deteriorates

Meanwhile, the situation deteriorates in Aligonia. According to the Aligonian newspaper Xornal Xeral de Aligonia, the Prince suffered an assassination attempt while doing a speech on national television. Despite the royal family was left unharmed and all assailants were killed during the action, two royal guardsmen were shot and didn’t resist the injuries caused by the cross-fire.

The instability on the island is only growing after the start of the protests, which is beginning to become increasingly violent day after day. Many Lusittian military specialists and political scientists affirm that the eruption of civil war could occur if the government doesn’t propose any change that meets the protesters’ demands.

Last Wednesday, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs issued another dispatch asking Lusittian nationals living or visiting Aligonia “to leave the island as fast as possible”, claiming security reasons.

National Assembly In Debate Over 'Idha', Bala Party Obstructs

Image
Idhatu launch, 1974

ARIMAL - As the Kiso meeting progresses in Tsurushima, President Mazras has been spearheading efforts to revive the Tuluran Space Agency(Iddoo Dhaabbata Tulura), IDHA. The government agency was first created in the 60s, but was dismantled later after the Charnean-Tuluran War in the 80s.

President Mazras first introduced a plan and budget in 2015, it finally being deliberated before the National Assembly. "This begins a new era of scientific endeavor for Tulura." Mazras advocates.

President Mazras had pushed for the agency to be brought back in its original form as a military-led organization, subordinate to the Airforce. Many Assemblymen disapprove of this proposal, causing a standstill in the legislature. Leader of the Goota Party, Saartu Xulbado Ilkaag, has began leading an opposition faction within the legislature, advocating that Idha be revived as a civilian-based scientific research agency.

Party leader Saartu explains the need to maintain a balance between public and military expenses, openly stating that, "The President's power must be eroded, and they must be subject to the Assembly and no other. As it was intended. We must not concede any more ground to military industry."

The Leendhala Party, currently leading the government and head by Sudem Mazras herself, calls lobbying and corruption accusations false. President Mazras stating that, "Public lies and deception are unnecessary." floating charges of misleading the public. Some members of the Leendhala Party call for Saartu's resignation.

Meanwhile, the Bala Party seeks to completely obstruct the recreation of Idha. Party Leader Yegeree Xagan says, "The government needs to focus on present environmental, health and agricultural issues. Instead of using the people's funding for this monetary sink of an agency, the Assembly should fund re-Greening of the countryside and enact stricter regulation."

Yegeree Xagan also advocates for the expansion of the Tuluran Environmental Agency(Kana).

With no consensus in the Assembly, the Bala Party will likely bring a revised plan to the legislature, with more trying arguments.

Tikal : One year after
By Sarah Withler
December 04, 2019

Image

Lion’s Rock —At the time of the publication of the article, two days would have past since was organized a vast mourning ceremony marking the two years anniversary of the “Parliament Massacre” in which the then-recently-elected Prime Minister Edward Smoking Frog, most of his cabinet, and half of the parliament, were killed in a terrorist attack. It’s this Massacre that sparkled the event now known as the “Tikalese Civil War”. It was a year long conflict that opposed the insurrected “Junta”, the Belfro-Arthuristan coalition, and the rebels known as the “Hands of Thunder”. It was a bloody conflict, punctuated with massacres, war crimes, and destruction on a scale never seen on the island before. But this tragedy finally ended, and now the Tikal Worker’s Party, once led by the late Edward Smoking Frog, returned to power with their frontrunner Laura Ramiro Kan being elected as Prime Minister with a resounding majority. With this election, it seems like democracy and the rule of law have returned to the island which remained loyal to the Arthuristan Shield. And yet.

With the defeat of the junta, the Belfro-Arthuristan Coalition’s troops left the island, their mission accomplished. But they and the Junta’s partisans weren’t the only fighters present on the island. The Hands of Thunder, a religiously-motivated insurrection led by the mysterious figure known only as “the Oracle”, had heavily contributed to the ultimate demise of the Junta. Following the harsh battles that scarred the island, the Hands had taken control of most of the slum areas where the core of their support resided, large sways of countryside, and many other districts. Through a good use of all communication methods at their disposal, from social networks to the radio “Voice of Thunder”, and other websites, the Hands managed to turn their difficult victories into a reputation of brave and fearsome freedom fighters. And now, these Hands, who had started as a revolutionary movement of the lower classes Tikaleses, who had armed themselves to the teeth, who had suffered the horrors of White Phosphorus shelling, and were full of religious zeal, were left as the de-facto only armed group left on the island. They seized the opportunity and brought order back as they saw fit.

One of the first action undertaken by the Hands’ even before the official reddition of the Junta was to set up “Exceptional Tribunals” with the task of investigating war crimes committed by the junta and its partisans. These courts at first limited themselves to the high leadership of the Junta, condemning them to death for a serie of crimes including high treason against the Arthuristan Shield and War Crimes, such as the use of White Phosphorus shells against both military troops and civilians. But quickly once the highest ranking members of the Junta found their neck on the wrong end of a large sword, it was their lieutenants and helpers who took their places in the Dock, and then on the chopping block. And then it was their own underlings and so on until every members of the Auxiliaries, the paramilitary troops that formed the bulk of the Junta’s forces, had been judged during expeditive trials. Only an handful of these footsoldiers ended up condemned to the capital punishment, but many others were banished from the island and expropriated. And then the Hands started to investigate the families of the Auxiliaries…

At the same time, the Hands did nothing to stop the spontaneous display of joy at the news of the fall of the Junta to turn into Riots. Hiberians neighborhoods were thoroughly looted as there was no law enforcement service left to protect them. Even after the situation calmed down, Hands of Thunder serving as de-facto police forces made sure that Hiberians felt insecure and unwelcomed even inside their own houses. This and the accusations of participation in war crimes or potential treason to the Tikalese State was too much, and a great number of Hiberians took what they had and left the island rather than take the risk of facing one of the Exceptional Tribunals.

Many of the Hiberians who left just abandoned their houses to go faster, and they ended up seized by the Hands, a move legal only because the Hands of Thunder said so and they were the last source of any form of order still standing on the island. But some were less in a hurry and took the time to put everything they couldn’t take with them for sale first. These cold-headed individuals were then contacted by a “Tikalese Social Wealth Fund”, who offered them a cheap, non-negotiable, but handy price for their houses and other real estates. It soon became clear that this Wealth Fund was just another front for the Hands, from how it appeared to how it acted to how all of its managers were of ethnic-Mutulese descent. Without many other options left and with the ever-present threat of the Hands of Thunder patrols looming in the streets, and everywhere, they accepted these offers and definitively left.

The Tikalese Social Wealth Fund did more than bully people out of their houses. It also bought the estates, office buildings, and other skyscrappers that had been abandoned by the banks and other financial institutions that once were the pulse of the island. The prices remained extremely low, without the need of any manipulation of any kind, because despite the end of the war confusion was still so high and the future so unclear that only the Hands had any confidence in what would come after and thus they were the only one willing to invest in the island. They bought over half of the country and it was a bargain.

It’s only after a few months and once enough Hiberians had left the country that the reconstruction of the Tikalese political system and institutions started. And once again it’s the Hands of Thunder who found themselves in charge of ti. They fixed the electoral divisions, they registered all the candidates and compiled the electoral lists, they distributed the electoral cards that had been produced at a neck-breaking speed in the previous months and they set up the polling stations, which were of course staffed by members of the Hands or relatives. There was no need for threat or violence, nor were there any protest. At this point Tikal was far past that.

And so, unsurprisingly, it’s the Worker’s Party that won these elections. The Worker’s Party who had already enjoyed great support from the forces that would become the Hands of Thunder before the war, and who’s frontrunner had collaborated thourough the conflict with the Hands.

A week after the results, it was announced that the Hands of Thunder would be disbanded, having now completed their purpose and one morning, people wake up to the sight of streets empty of any marauding patrol harboring the colors of the insurgent group, and Hands banners and flags disappeared from the windows and from the public building. As the judiciary system woke up from the slumber of the civil war, the Extraordinary Tribunals were closed. It seemed like the Oracle and his men surprisingly agreed to handover their powers and return to civilian life. Of course, all of this was only a facade : The Oracle, leader of the Hands of Thunder, went on and created the Monastery of 10 Manik, where he secluded himself. Meanwhile, one of the first action took by the newly elected parliament was to declare all actions undertook by the Extraordinary Tribunals and other affiliated actors to be constitutional, following the Doctrine of Necessity. The same day it also officially disbanded the military and the intelligence service, the two organs that had been central to the Junta’s rise to power. However, in a more discreet report, some MPs emitted the possibility of replacing the army by a new branch of the Police forces. The study of this plan and its application was left to an individual known as Thomas Two-Suns, famous for having been one of the highest ranking, if not the highest ranking, general of the Hands of Thunder. Similarily another branch of the police was created a few week laters, known as the “General Investigation Division”, and another ex-leader of the Hands was put in charge of it, Richard Sky-Sun. Similarly, many police officers had been killed or forced to flee the country because of their Hiberian heritage, and they were replaced by the most disciplined footsoldiers of the Hands.

Since the new regime seemed unwilling to change the statu-quo between Tikal and Arthurista, the financial institutions that had fled the country after the Parliamentary Massacre slowly became willing to return, only to find that the place was already taken. The offices they once occupied were now filled again with bankers and financiers, but these new ones held Mutuleses, Rezeses, or even Liothidians and Tsurushimeses nationalities in a few cases. All the skyscrapers and large buildings seized or bought by the Tikalese Social Wealth Fund had been sold back to new owners. The rest of the real estate portfolio owned by the Social Fund served as a form of guarantee to the new state, as solid assets to back up it’s still fragile credibility. Even if some enterprises managed to return, it became clear that under the appearance of a return to a statu quo ante bellum, Tikal had changed.

Not only had it changed politically and racially, going from an almost evenly split population between people of Hiberian and Mutuleses descents to a three-quarters, and possibly more, Mutulese population, it has also changed religiously. The association of the Hands of Thunder with the Labour party specifically is merely due to circumstance. The Hands were first and foremost a religious cult, and the nickname of “Oracle” given to its leader is not a tongue-in-cheek description. His partisans really believe that he has the ability to communicate with divine forces and predicts events before they happen. The civil war was thus filled with such events as people pretending to become the avatar of a god of their choice, massive religious displays, and acts of fervor even in battle. Especially in battle. Even the choice to behead people found guilty by the Exceptional Tribunals wasn’t innocent, as it is one of the way to perform human sacrifices in the White Path, the religion of the Hands, and by all accounts these executions were performed without any deviation from the rituals following these special kind of “offerings”. During the riots that followed the defeat of the Junta, one of the main target rioters were the churches and other buildings or objects with any kind of tie to an abrahamic religion. They were destroyed, burn, and their priests molested with impunity. Not only were the rioters never punished, but it’s the priests themselves that soon found themselves before the Exceptional Tribunals, accused of collaboration with the Junta. None were condemned to the capital punishment, but all were forced to flee Tikal and ordered to never come back. Abandoned, their places of worships were demolished by the Hands and then by the new government, and replaced by altars, monuments, and small temples dedicated to the gods of the White Path.

The very atmosphere of the island is now filled with scents of religious extremism. The word “Parish” disappeared from public documents, all saints names were replaced by those of gods and other mythical creatures, and all civil festivities such as the recent Remembrance of the Parliamentary Massacre, had shades of religious celebrations, if they were not openly dedicated to the myriads of gods of the White Path. Regularly the Oracle meet with the government, and sometime he publicly appears to recite speeches, sermons, perform a religious ceremony, or reveal one of his visions. The radio “Voice of Thunder” was not shut down after the war and continues, now very officially, to give daily news, lessons of theology, and diffuse the words of the Oracle and other renowned theologians in equal measures. Visiting Tikal beyond the airport-financial district corridor is to see firsthand the transformation of a secular republic into a religious state.

It is easy for an uninformed outsider to miss what’s really going on in Tikal and think that the situation is merely returning to normal after more than a year of chaos. But the truth is that the Hands of Thunder, sometime in secret sometime openly, have enjoyed the power vacuum left by the fall of the Junta to take over the entire island and with each passing days they seem to be controlling more and more aspects of the country and reshaping it in their own image and their official disbanding changed nothing to that. They no longer bear their colors in public, but now they walk in police uniforms, religious robes, and the garbes of politicians. Saving democracy and political freedom from them seems like an impossible task, more and more so with each passing day.

As Term Nears End, Feldman Continues War of Words With Lusittia's Maynard

Image
Pictured: President Noah Feldman at a press conference yesterday.

The outgoing President of Yisrael risks backlash from Aligonian supporters or his hand-picked successor, Foreign Minister and Conservative Party nominee Yitzchok Katz by continuing his feud with the Lusittian head of government.
November 2nd, 2019| By Binyomin Eisenberger (beisenberg@ryd.org) | 10:16am EDT

YERUSHALAYIM, YISRAEL — With less than three months until his term ends, President Noah Feldman has double-downed on his rhetoric regarding the growing three-week-long anti-monarchy protests in Gran Aligonia. As part of his commentary on ongoing events, he called for "order, stability, and continuity" amid the increasing violent protests on the trans-Periclean island chain, directly warning the political leadership in Lusittia against violent regime change. Lusittian Prime Minister Rita Maynard responded to his remarks, sarcastically referring to historical Yisrael rule in Aligonia as "brutal" without evidence and accusing him of contributing to the radicalization of both sides in the Aligonian crisis.

Feldman Strikes Back

The Yisraeli head of government was asked about Maynard's words at a press conference earlier today. Feldman replied, incredulously and gesturing for effect: "Prime Minister Maynard continues to be needlessly provocative. It is an established fact members of her own Cabinet support what we can all see was a fairly transparent call for violent regime change in Gran Aligonia. She may not feel the need to remark on it, but it stands in the public record. Second, the Yisraeli-led protectorate era in Aligonia was one of the most peaceful and productive epochs in the GA's history, and has led directly to its premier status of a major financial center in the Periclean fringe. The Yisraeli colonial administration working in concert with the Aligonian monarchy of that era was neither brutal or illegitimate. Given Lusittia's alignment with the Sydalon bloc during the West Scipian Contention, it is not surprising but unfortunate that the Madam Prime Minister engaged in historical revisionism rather than the historical facts."

"Third," he continued on, ticking off a finger, "I suspect the disconnect here is revealed in the Prime Minister's last few words - her invocation against a purported Yisraeli 'zone of influence.' On that topic, let me ask: why on G-d's green Earth is there a Lusittian military base in Gran Aligonia? Truly, what purpose does it serve?" Feldman smiled, saying, "There is no purpose but to implicitly threaten use of force and ensure the GA opens its doors to Lusittian interests. After all, what military rival would Lusittia see the need to position an overseas base on the Aligonian isles for? Latium, on the other, has a clear geopolitical defensive posture to maintain. But Lusittia? There appears no justification. I would encourage the Prince Veremundo to reconsider the so-called 'necessity' of leasing a military base to the Lusittians."

Neck-And-Neck With Kaduri, Katz Backs Feldman's Call on Ending the Lusittian Basing Rights In the GA

Yisraeli Foreign Minister, close Feldman ally, and the 2020 Conservative Party presidential nominee, Yitzchok Katz echoed Feldman's advocacy in a separate statement released to the press later in the morning.

"I also call upon Aligionian Prince Veremundo to rescind the Lusittian basing rights in his country. There seems to be no justified rationale for Lusittia to have a military base in the GA, given it has no publicly asserted military or geopolitical opponent. Thus, the only reason I can see dovetails with President Feldman's - Aligonia has no military, and the presence of Lusittian troops can be an ominous implicit threat to ensure the GA engages in trade and security policy with Lusittia. As the next President of Yisrael, I would strongly encourage Gran Aligonia to remove such a real threat to its sovereignty from its borders post-haste."

Katz is currently running statistically even in the polls with Constitutional Liberal Party nominee and left-wing firebrand Yosef Kaduri. The hand-picked successor to Feldman, Katz has united a broad right-wing coalition of religious and political conservatives under his leadership. He is the first Chareidi to be a presidential nominee, and has enjoyed a moderate-to-thin lead over Kaduri in public polling since the official campaign season kicked off on September 4th.

Bucking the Conservatives, Kaduri Issues A Fierce and Mocking Statement In Favor of Maynard

Kaduri has fired up his base of political liberals and Chilonim despite his records of investigations by every major Yisraeli security service for a litany of ideological and political crimes. He has remained outspoken in favor of left-wing political, economic, and social reforms along the lines of countries such Ottonia, Ostmark, and Arthurista, which have galvanized a passionate backlash among the nationalist and religious right, who have accused him of openly seeking to violate the 1920 Constitution. Kaduri has denied such charges, calling them "right-wing conspiracy theories" and "the empty rhetoric of religious fanatics."

Kaduri, indeed, has weighed in himself, defending Lusittia's Maynard in a stunningly bold speech: "In contrast to Yisrael's failed current leadership, I want to support the remarks made by my fellow global liberal Rita Maynard, Prime Minister of Lusittia, who has been trying to be a voice of calm and peace during these rough times. Countries where the people govern themselves through popular consent ought to be where we as a country stand for in foreign policy, and I apologize to her on behalf of the people of Yisrael for our current president, who is leaving office not fast enough. Our people failed Aligonia when we invaded and impose an unwanted colonial regime on them in 1932, and if elected President, I will support whatever choice the people of the Gran Aligonia make - whether to institute reforms to their monarchy or adopt a republic."

Kaduri's pugilistic statement was blasted by a litany of right-leaning groups and institutions, including the Presidential Palace, the Katz campaign, the Chief Rabbinate of Yisrael, the Union of Dati Leumi Synagogues, and others.

Amid intensifying protests and foreign debate, Prince Veremundo complicates the situation

By: Lorenzo Novoa
16 December 2019

VILLA ROMERA - As the heated and occasionally violent civil rights protests in Gran Aligonia enter their third month, it appears that the Aligonian government under Prince Veremundo Abellán has moved to take a more robust stance towards the tense protests. Though the administration has attempted to remain neutral in its treatment of the situation, Prince Veremundo and his small loyalist faction have found themselves increasingly pressured to act as the protests have dragged on and Gran Aligonia’s stock market has plummeted. Ideological opposites as diverse as the hardline monarchist Duke Alexandre del Villar of Tarraron, and the leader of the AAFT, Leuter Sion, have made repeated demands of abdication towards the House of Abellán.

In a speech televised today at noon, Prince Veremundo had this to say:

After much painful deliberation, and among the cries for my abdication, I have sought to balance the weight which was placed upon my shoulders with the passing of my father this March. But I find myself restrained by interests of those who have have little care for the true interests of the people of these shores. Yes, in this speech, I shall speak not with those in Latium, in Yisrael, in Lusittia who would only seek to use these shores as a bargaining chip, and me as a puppet. Your frustration with my administration has been justly founded; for even as the months in my office progressed, I had to come to terms with this unfortunate and deeply hidden reality of our system here.

I, like you, was also tricked, and this trick was sewn into my identity, into the fabric of my suit. I now know that I was wrong.

So now, with all of my chain-holders hissing at each other over the absurdity of their presence on this island, I ask you to trust me. Those who mean well, in the streets and in Parliament, have more than a grain of truth to their arguments: our system is indeed flawed and corrupt. I have too much power. These words have been historically very hard to admit by any ruler. I only beg that you not follow the false words of the Migrant Worker’s Union, and of the Bishop Marin, both of whom have unfortunately not tasted the reality of the trick which those with more soldiers have pulled upon our islands here.

An hour ago, I instructed Director-General Segarra of the Xendarmeria to evict all foreign soldiers, contractors, and other potential threats from Gran Aligonia, while we open dialogue with the leaders of the protest and Leuter Sion of the AAFT, who I believe has come to a similar realization of the way in which we were all tricked. Democratization reforms and a total redrawing of the district maps are to begin today, per my orders.

We were on a leash for years; now, as our people cry, each side of the Periclean tugs its share. I hope that, through your trust, we can together return Aligonia to its former Grandness.

The speech immediately crashed several political discussion sites due to the overflow of web traffic; many observers were left to decipher the Prince’s often-vague language. After Leuter Sion of the AAFT confirmed that he had been in contact with Prince Veremundo for the past month after an “epiphany”, during which the legislative and parliamentary reform logistics of the speech were planned. Many in the streets appear to have flipped, appeased by the Prince’s democratization, while others, particularly the followers of Bishop Marin, have reportedly begun rioting.

This speech comes despite foriegn policy pressures from differing international forces, including Latium, Lusittia, and Yisrael; the most recent international controversy came in the previous month, when outgoing Yisraeli President Feldman made a public call for the end of Lusittian basing rights in Gran Aligonia, sparking controversy both on the Archipelago and in the greater West Scipian sphere. The speech seemed to confirm reports of hostile socialist powers at least partially financing the Christian socialist bloc led by Bishop Hugo Marin, and challenged the very bedrock of foreign discussions over the course of the protest regarding foreign basing rights and the justness of the protests.

The Prince’s words have angered both Latium-aligned hardliners such as del Villar, and the Yisraeli-influenced democratic reformist faction, whose economic policy Prince Veremundo has seemed to eschew, despite the apparent concession of parliamentary power. Furthermore, the Diocese of Villa Romera denounced Prince Veremundo, calling him a “desperate man trying to clutch at power that was given to him by the same people he now claims to hate.”

As protests and intermittent skirmishes continue to occur, the Latin and Lusittian bases, as well as various private military groups contracted by foreign interests, have found themselves in a tense situation as they have been given 48 hours to completely evacuate all personnel from the Principality. It has yet to be seen how the foreign voices of Gran Aligonia’s accused influencers will respond to the Prince’s surprising turn.

BREAKING: After a tense firefight in Tarraron in which 14 were killed, mainly Latin PMC contractors, Duke Alexandre del Villar, leader of the Loyalists, has reportedly escaped his mansion and has applied for asylum in Latium.

NEW VAJRA MISSILE SIGNALS SUCCESS OF MODERNIZATION EFFORT

Image

KALAPA - UNION OF SOCIALIST PEOPLE'S REPUBLICS Since its inception, the Union has lived in fear, beset as it is by tyrannical regimes on all sides. To the north, the inbred aristocrats of Uluujol, and to the east the long suffering Dali, itself ruled by a succession of tinpot dictators. Across the sea is the outpost of Tsurushima, that quixotic revisionist state to the far north and east. Menacing from across the sea is Onekawa-Nukanoa, a totalitarian monarchy of an entirely different flavor. For this period the Unionites have only been able to turn to their single ally in the region, Sampeng, for mutual defense. It is no surprise then that these two nations have enjoyed a special relationship based in revolutionary spirit and mutual defense.

On a balmy Tuesday morning, elements of the General Rocket Bureau rolled through Martyr's Square to celebrate the veterans of the Revolutionary People's Army who became disabled during their service. Photographers and camera crews of the Telecommunication Workers' Local #556 were present for the festivities and were able to take advantage of the clear skies to get excellent shots of the missiles. Members of the RPA Electric Ensemble Orchestra played the national anthem as they strode past. A crowd of gathered spectators, including many surviving veterans of the Great Patriotic Proletarian Revolution, waved flags excitedly at the sight. One such veteran, now 92, wept tears of joy at what he called "the Union's salvation".

The Vajra is a solid fueled, short ranged ballistic missile that flies on a quasi ballistic trajectory and can carry up to a 700 kilogram warhead. Reports suggest that it's capable of mounting a thermonuclear MIRV type warhead and conventional explosives. It uses a combination of its own classified internal navigation system and advanced electronic system that allows the missile to discover and navigate to the target. Further modifications include integrating satellite constellations into its systems are planned. The Vajra is intended to operate as a part of the General Rocket Bureau's greater network of missile systems, primarily serving as an anti-ship missile in the Gulf of Sukti and the southwestern Makria ocean.

The development of the Vajra and other such weapons takes place as part of a greater effort to make the Revolutionary People's Army a 21st fighting force. The General Rocket Bureau, which maintains and operates the country's missile and satellite programs, has been a major focus of the modernization efforts, seeing much of its gear phased out since 2010. Billions of woolongs and labor hours have been invested into the project, which has yielded fruits that can reign devastation from Lion's Rock to far northwestern Uluujol. Defense Commissioner Gen. Trengwa is expected to push for greater funding to the project during negotiations over the 18th five year plan set to begin next month.

No Plans to Leave Sidora, say High Ranking Officials
Forum, Castellum ab Alba
By: John Afinius (@RAL)

Forum, Castellum: Amidst the Gran Aligonia crisis and the announcement from the island principality’s leader, Prince Veremundo, that all foreign military personnel and contractors be removed from the country, high ranking members of both the Imperial government and military have rejected such claims. The Master of Soldiers, Flavius Vipsanius, issued a statement hours after Prince Veremundo’s statement, declaring that after briefing and speaking to Emperor Constantine XX, individuals “stationed at Sidora will not comply with the eviction notice, and are to remain at their posts.” He continued, saying that all personnel are now on high alert after the Prince’s notice declared that local Xendarmeria have orders to carry out the eviction, and that “any hostile action taken against Latin soldiers, or personnel, on the island will not be tolerated and will see a swift and proportionate response.”

A similar statement was issued by Quastor Sergius Acilius, who declared that the eviction request is “unlawful pursuant to the terms of the Treaty on the Defense and Guarantee of Gran Aligonia.” Quastor Acilius, supported by legal experts at Imperial court, noted that the treaty was the controlling document regarding the Latin occupation of a military base at Sidora “for the purpose of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Gran Aligonia.” Since the 1950s, the Latin Armed Forces have maintained a military garrison at Sidora, a former Yisraeli military installation established during the country’s occupation of Gran Aligonia. The base is key in allowing Latium to uphold its treaty obligations to provide for the defense of Aligonia. “Terms regarding a lawful termination of the agreement are very clearly delineated, and promptly disregarded by [Prince] Veremundo when he ordered this eviction notice,” the Quastor stated.

These comments were again echoed by Foreign Magistrate the Duke of Narona: “It is now perfectly clear that Prince Veremundo is brazenly disregarding not only national law, but international law. He has sent armed soldiers to apprehend domestic political opponents, and has shown little intention of upholding a lawfully entered into treaty, which has seen Latium guarantee and support the proud people of Gran Aligonia for over half a century.” The Foregin Office placed upgraded its travel warning for Gran Aligonia, and advised that any Latin citizens on the island evacuate, or travel to the embassy in Villa Romera or the base in Sidora if they are unable to secure transportation off the island.

Ghantish Leaders Chime In On Gran Aligonia

by Garbi Urenxa

Ghish, Ghant— As international reactions fly in response to comments made by Princ Veremundo of Gran Aligonia, Ghantish leaders including Prime Minister Nymun Izarbegiratzeak, Emperor Nathan IV and Leader of the Opposition Sara Haribec have offered their positions publicly.

The controversy stems from a public statement issued by Prince Veremundo of Gran Aligonia, where he claims to have:
instructed Director-General Segarra of the Xendarmeria to evict all foreign soldiers, contractors, and other potential threats from Gran Aligonia, while we open dialogue with the leaders of the protest and Leuter Sion of the AAFT, who I believe has come to a similar realization of the way in which we were all tricked. Democratization reforms and a total redrawing of the district maps are to begin today, per my orders.

Latin leaders have responded to these calls to evict their military personnel from the island with indignation. Flavius Vipsanius, the Master of Soldiers, issued a statement in which he refused to offer compliance with the Prince’s command, and that Latin military personnel would remain at their posts. This stems from a treaty made between Latium and Gran Aligonia in the 1950s known as the “Treaty on the Defense and Guarantee of Gran Aligonia.” This treaty remains controversial in Gran Aligonia and is the source of widespread public discontent, resulting in protests that spurned the Prince into making his comments.

Vipsanius further declared that “any hostile action taken against Latin soldiers, or personnel, on the island will not be tolerated and will see a swift and proportionate response.”

Prime Minister Nymun Izarbegiratzeak of Ghant offered the following statement during his most recent weekly press conference. “The key here I think is for both Latium and Gran Aligonia to understand each others’ needs and concerns, and recognize that there’s a treaty in place that provides stipulations for its cancellation. If Gran Aligonian leaders decide that what’s best for Gran Aligonia is to terminate the treaty, then there are ways to approach this that don’t involve threats or unilateral decisions being made that put the safety of citizens and soldiers at risk.”

The Emperor of Ghant offered similar advice specifically to Prince Veremundo. “I understand that as a ruler you seek what is best for your people, but that starts firstly with safety. Provoking and escalating a tense situation is no way to go about that. Instead, try negotiation and dialogue. It will get you much further and won’t put you in a precarious situation.”

While the Prime Minister and Emperor offered peaceable solutions, Opposition Leader Sara Haribec had far harsher words directed at Latium. “I find it rich that the Latins are offering to defend Gran Aligonia while at the same time threatening to attack it. This really goes to show that honoring the Defense Treaty is really just thinly-veiled imperialism. Nobody’s being fooled by this diplomatic smoke and mirrors tactic. Gran Aligonians know it, Prince Veremundo knows it, and we Ghantish know it. If the Latins have any respect for the sovereignty of Gran Aligonia then they should consider exiting the treaty as per the wishes of the citizens of Gran Aligonia. Yet they won’t, because they’re more interested in holding the Gran Aligonians hostage to a treaty that no longer reflects the geopolitical realities of the Periclean.”
