I would love to expand on these ideas further and and get as many nation as possible involved.

What did you have in mind for other nations getting involved? I'm interested in flushing out my nations foreign relations.

Lemme know if you've got any ideas about it - Van, perhaps this is what we could have for that bolded territory?

Yes! In fact, these nations will not be canon until I can get other nations to participate. For Mesderina, various scientific expeditions and stuff like that. For Panko, different religious groups fighting to convert the natives to their faith (the Pankoese are the last "untouched" civilization in the Isles).

I've been thinking about taking over Charbagnia since there is a vacuum on the territory due to Dormil and Stiura leaving the region. Well, at least, the part that he owned.

Charbagnia has been divided into 4-5 countries.

There's Vancouvian Agvinon??(spelling), Oster zone, Noronnican zone and formerly DS French Charbagnia plus the Sultanate of Kachee (contested between AM and Wellsia but not anymore since DS and French Charbagnia don't exist).

Hey, I've been planning out a little thing to turn the Central Canal Authority from being something both boring and unrealistic (the League owning land the size of north korea) into a genuine NPC territory that we can have fun with. Introducing Tusing: https://www.nationstates.net/nation=tus ... ok/id=main

In short, it's inspired by Noriega's Panama with cultural changes to make it fit the area. Corrupt, crime hotspot, in short perfect for being a key extension factor in AM's civil war and much more. Future plans, which I was working through with Altera and a few others, was for an intervention surrounding actions which would try close the canal (Suez style) or just a generic deposing of the dictator (Panama style, but with the added benefits of major leftist insurgencies to make the conflict messy). The goal with this would be for a proper nationbuilding project, peacekeepers, all that, the kind of mess the UN has to deal with, instead of a plain old well rp'd land grab like Charbagnia turned into. Altera, the current possessor of factbooks on the CCA, is in favour of it.

Open to questions etc.

Gday Islanders! So with Polar out of the Wake Islands, that means we have a big gap in canon around that area - an opportunity to deepen canon in Raedlon by using the territory and building n the plans its OOC founders had.

Here’s the idea; names subject to change to allow them to be more suitable. Essentially in the modern day, boundaries would be on the same lines in the territory as the traditional bases of power throughout history.

For clarity’s sake, I’ll start with the idea for the modern-day Wake Islands.

There’d be three ‘states’, independent nations but so irrelevant they essentially are absorbed by the nations (ie player nations) who back them.

State #1: Kingdom of Norregan
Capital: Genna
  • Absolute monarchy running in a similar fashion to Wake’s tribal origins.

State #2: The Islands of Atolla
Capital: Atolla
  • Young democratic republic. Easy to manipulate

State #3: Kingdom of Sud
    Capital: Karanoa
  • A bit older of a democracy than Atolla but a constitutional monarchy. Slightly less easy to manipulate. Has a solid government though - free elections and all.

Image

These three states would be the products of centuries of shifting power dynamics in the territory, which would ultimately be caused by player nations backing them in the post. The small, poor and struggling nations continue to try and one-up one another to show their power. However in reality, their ‘partners and backers’ are the real ones running the show. The three nations (which are all historically militant kingdom) are really just pieces in a wider game of geopolitics - both in history and today.

Not a lot beyond this is fleshed out, but I’d like to take this opportunity to try and make the Wake Islands work for the neighbours around it.

Here’s what we will likely need to address to make the idea work.
  1. We’d need local nations (4P, Raedlon, North Mesder) to describe how expansionist the various entities pre-dating their current nations are - from here we could organise long wars across Wake or alternatively just a slow Wake war that never seems to truly end.
  2. We’d need someone to enlighten State #3 (Kingdom of Sud) in the ways of democracy by any means possible
  3. We’d need someone in a similar role to get State #2 (Atolla) on that same path too.
  4. Probably would need someone either to quietly or openly back Norregan (State #1) in the modern day - I imagine Domanania or Arkley could be good in this role.

I imagine this would complicate Raedlon relations and add some additional nuance in the modern-day to it too. You all are too cozy over there!

Of course though - these are all ideas and I’m happy to adapt things or run with them differently . This was something that came up as an idea following looking at bolded territories more widely with Ainslie the other day.

As always, suggestions, comments and ideas are greatly appreciated.

Cozy is not necessarily a bad thing; personally I find wars immensely boring (both real and role-played ones) so I'll avoid them if I can.

I (as in Nhoor, perhaps now coordinated with the other members of the Raedlon Organisation of States) could "take care of"/"assist" Sud, politically.

In general, I would not mind having a couple of Nhoor minorities living on all three of the islands. That would give some right-wing Nhoor the possibility to claim all three of the islands or something like that.

Reathwood, though it has a non-interventionist history, has probably involved itself at some point in the Wake Islands due to their closeness—I think that the government of Reathwood would be deeply invested in keeping its surrounding regions, at least, stable and at peace. As Nhoor would like to prop up Sud politically, perhaps Reathwood—which has a long democratic tradition—could be invested in the affairs of Atolla, watching over its fledgling democracy and endeavoring to keep its electoral and political system stable. I think this would fit the democratic agenda of the ruling government.

Simultaneously, though, the powerful corporations that hold so much influence in Reathwood would almost certainly do their part to exercise economic influence over Atolla.

Edit: As a second thought, perhaps the government of Reathwood could also take a rather stern approach to Norregan, as monarchy is an idea held very skeptically in Reathwood's culture and government policy. I'd be happy to work that out as well.

I have been needing somewhere for Almorea to exert colonial influence in the 1800s, without stepping on too many peoples' toes, so this seems like a good solution.

Nhoor, depending on when you claimed those islands, Almorea would have disputed that claim and pushed you to lease your conquests from Almorea a la the other naval bases.

I discussed it with some other people and got a good idea of how i could get involved.

From 384-920 BC Domanania had a trade empire in the north mesder and 4P that involved the taking of important ports and harbors and then using them to control a nation or people into paying taxes and tribute. So id be interested in supporting Norregan with a base of Genna used to be one of these ports, and that Domanania claims that the island (and by proxy the other ones) contain Doman descendants. The government has always been friendly towards the north island, but in recent years Domanania has been more protective of Doman Nationals, and so would have been ramping up support for the island for the last 40 years.

And with how my election will go in the next year, they will be more openly and directly supporting the island. All under the guise of protecting Domanania's people, but in reality it would be to sort of set the country up to be a sort of colony or puppet state

Thank you all for the responses. Just a few questions before we start really fleshing things out…

All of you: what are your major religions in history and today? If we can’t fiercely divide wake along ethnic lines, we should try going cultural and religious.

Almorea: What islands would you be disputing with Nhoor? Does this mean you refuse to recognise the independence of one or more of the three kingdoms, or do you mean dispute as in vying for control? Don’t get me wrong, these states are in practice hardly nations but by law they still are so territorial claims could be questionable and messy - although I’m totally on board for that option too if we flesh it out well.

Nhoor: Where would Atolla sit in the eyes of Nhoor modern-day? If you like Sud, would you disregard Atolla? If so, that’d be great :) Also, about your plans in pushing the ROS to back Sud, assuming not all ROS states would be willing to back you, does that mean Nhoor is willing to be in disagreements with the rest of Raedlon?

Domanania: How can we further strengthen the ties between Norregan and Domanania? How could their history be further intertwined with yours? Perhaps it can have something to do with royal ties and marriages? Get a close blood relation/union going? Is there an opportunity for you to back them in a genocide/war/massacre some time in history (or the modern day?) Is there some way we can import Doman culture into Norregan, or potentially a way for them to adopt how your monarchy works and adjust it to their tribal ways?

Reathwood: How exactly do you think your government would be backing Atolla’s government politically? Would sending observers during their elections be a part of it? Would you have a heavy NGO presence? Also - by moving your businesses in, does this mean we’re talking sweatshops, large agriculture, modern day slaves or something else? How fleshed out is your history at the moment - is there some way we can have you try and break Atolla’s former monarchy to try and install a democratic government?

"All of you: what are your major religions in history and today? If we can’t fiercely divide wake along ethnic lines, we should try going cultural and religious."

Nhoor adheres to Duvactism, which is a local variety of Hinduism.

"Nhoor: Where would Atolla sit in the eyes of Nhoor modern-day? If you like Sud, would you disregard Atolla? Why would it be great if Nhoor disregarded Atolla? Although Nhoor can take Sud under its wing, I'm sure there are plenty of hardliners in Nhoor who would love to annex all of the Wake Islands if this would not lead to a major international conflict.

ROS is still rather new and the cultural differences between its members are big so I think it will be unavoidable that ROS members will disagree on topics.

As for the religious question, the Protestant-aligned Church of Reathwood is the leading religious body in the Republic and, of adherents to religion in Reathwood, it holds the overwhelming majority. This would be historically true as well.

And definitely; the idea would be to keep the elections in Atolla under Reathwood's watchful eye, through the use of observers under a special commission associated with Reathwood's own election oversight organ. NGOs in Reathwood would probably be invested in ensuring smooth, open elections there too. Generous trade deals, visa programs and foreign aid could help to keep the general opinion of Reathwood as a benevolent overseer and the Armed Forces of Reathwood could play an active role in keeping the region at peace and the democratic tradition of the country unassailable.

The motives for "looking after" Atolla in this way are plentiful, of course. Reathwood is a moralistic country with a conservative culture that strongly favors democracy, and supporting the democratic process in Atolla is a good way for any sitting government to gain favor with the people; though it has a non-interventionist history, Reathwood increasingly sees itself as a bringer of democratic stability. Such involvement also is a way for Reathwood to exercise influence in the Wake Islands, which are in the Republic's immediate proximity. One of the most lucrative benefits, however, is economic gain. Cheap labor, likely in dangerous conditions, could endure in Atolla to prop up the megacorporations that dominate Reathwood's economy. Though such a thing is hardly very moral, the last few governments have been pro-business enough to probably let such things happen.

As for Reathwood being the force behind the fall of Atolla's monarchy: as previously mentioned, Reathwood has a mostly non-interventionist history. With exceptions, it hasn't involved itself very strongly in the affairs of its neighbors. Atolla, however, can be one of those exceptions.

I'm still working out my history, but the government of Reathwood in the late 1920s/early 1930s was desperate to reverse itself out of economic catastrophe, and a moralistic war to bring democracy to Atolla could have been a way to rally the populace and kickstart the economy. Ultimately, it would not be enough to work and the president would still be booted out in the 1934 elections, but 1929–1933 could be a good time for Reathwood to intervene and establish a fledgling democracy in Atolla, likely justifying its actions with some minor spat or encounter in the seas between the two lands. Reathwood went through a similar (but less severe) period in the 1960s, so that decade could also work for something like that.

Domanania has had (up until a few days ago) a strict adherence to their native religion Domanium. It has three major branches, but is primarily a polytheistic religion that has strong roots in nature worship. The government forced adherence to the religion almost 100 years ago (officially, but many local laws forced adherence as well before then). The government just passed a law that will allow people to worship freely. For Doman's, their religion is part of their culture and Doman culture can not exist without religion, in many people's views. The religion itself is also very Syncretic, and can adapt and morph with other religions. It even has a syncretic faith with Christianity.

Since domanania had a monarchy up until about the 19th century, it is very possible for there to be a long history of royal marriages. Even more possible that they could even have a direct line to Domanania's first King/Emperor.

But when it comes to genocide, up until about 50-60 years ago, the government would have backed them. from 1900-1960 the country (with a 4 year break for WW2 to fight off AM) was in a state of civil war, with a fascist government in official control. That government would have whole heartedly supported a genocide up until 1959 (when they lost the last real battle of the civil war). In the modern day, the current government may not dirty their hands themselves officially, but they would support. Even "selling" aircraft and ships and missiles to Norrgean. Where they just launch from their territory and paint the ships and planes in their colors, but are still under direct doman control, but under the guise of Norrgean control. Or selling officially and only have troops stationed to "observe and keep the peace". In the near future though, a far-right government will be comming into power and would ramp up support.

The ancient Doman monarchy operated like a typical monarchy, but it had a lot of decentralization. Historically Domanania had a trade empire (back in the 4th-10th century) that would exact tribute from nations and people, and take their trade ports to exert control. And this went down to the local level in the home territory. Since Domanania was the first official kingdom, most other people's were tribal. So through levels of bureaucracy, the crown would run the systems it needed to in the tribes, but the tribes remained rather independent for several hundred years while they slowly adopted the system. And up until the 17th century, local regions were allowed to keep their own armies, choose their local government, and still were just forced to pay tribute in the way of riches or men for the army. So it is possible that Norrgean could adopt a similar style to the early monarchy. With a strong government slowly elevating tribal groups into the system. With the riches and men offered up to the crown, the crown can exert control. And in the modern day, they would have Domanania on their side to help keep control of the tribes. All in all the monarchy levied tribute against others who could operate how they pleased, as a form of taxation and had a loose coalition for mutual defense and economic benefit. If that makes sense.

Hi, howdy. I'm dropping in real quick to provide an update on Charbagnia. As those involved will know, the French population of Charbagnia revolted against the Federation over the course of the invasion in 2018. I've since created, and recently edited, the primary overview factbook for the French Republic of Charbagnia, the end result of the Revolution. While I don't have an immediate plan to involve it in a RP now, I do intend to use it, and have it open to be used, in the news and among other RPs where they are relevant. My future goals for Charbagnia in general is to have the Republic attempt (and hopefully succeed) to gain control over Wellasia's occupied Kachee and the remaining ARRF occupation zones of the south, both to assert its sovereignty as a French nation but also to gain access to the economic might of the former capital region, which being heavily German, will end in a reversal of fortunes from what the Federation had years prior. I'll use the list Vancouvia provided to add in the last bits of detail nedessary.

1. Name. (The common/map name of the territory.): French Charbagnia (or Fr. Charbagnia)
2. De Facto Rule. (Either "Independent" or a nation name (Arvan would said Noronnican for example.) If this is ambiguous we can sort it out and maybe put "In Conflict"): Independent
3. Status. (Example of this would be "Absorbed into Vancouvia," "Under Occupation by Several Nations," "Rebelling Against Atnaia," etc.): Stabilizing, claims territory of multiple nations.
4. Nations Involved. (A list of major nations with their hands in the territorial cookie jar. Maybe bold the "primary contact" if the nation is independent on de facto rule.): Dormill and Stiura, Wellsia, Vancouvia, Ostehaar, Noronica
5. Description. (One-three sentence description like you'd see in the RP dispatch that encapsulates the "point" of the territory's existence or overall status and destiny. This will likely be the hardest thing to standardize.): Fresh from an anti-German revolution, the French Republic of Charbagnia has been seeking means to finally assert its sovereignty and international status. This has been hampered by adopting the damage caused by its own revolution and the concurrent ARRF invasion, which the Republic blames for the current state of affairs across the entirety of Charbagnia.
