Base Corps at the Crossroads

BASE CORPS AT THE CROSSROADS
Written By: Cole Ford and Steven Craig

Let's be real. It's rare to see the Base Corps in a position of any success. And, despite this, we still expect to see them succeed to some degree. With a pretty new-look squad, it's a wonder they could get anything done. Despite the supposed quality of the PBL of Drawkland, our national team has never done anything of relevance besides getting hilariously shit on when we're in the spotlight, if we even get that far.

So what do we have here? A chance at gaining actual relevance? A chance to fail even more spectacularly now that we have some expectations? Let's dive a little deeper into our WBC 47 run so far, and see just what we have going on.

THE NEW TEAM
With new stars rising from the depths of the league, DISC has decided to revamp the team with a set of promising rookies, hoping they can build a cohesive squad that can last for cycles to come. But since nobody knows much about this team, let's give a quick rundown.

The big power hitters on the starting line are Mark Fields, Abram Kavana, and Lane Kavana. Of course, everyone in the lineup is more than capable of going deep, Smart, Ford, and Jones the more notable, but the Kavana/Fields are the big 3. Lane in particular has taken the PBL by storm, hitting a record number of homeruns for a rookie.

Of course, there's more to the game than hitting homeruns on offense, and the importance of contact hitting and baserunning cannot be overstated. Roger Madison, one of the lone veterans on the team, is indisputably one of the best examples of this on the team. While he spent most of his illustrious career at second base, in the past few seasons he's moved to shortstop due to a necessity in his domestic team and really began to thrive. In any case, his ability at the plate has been unmatched for years. Abram Kavana, while being a solid power hitter, usually opts for a contact-based approach, and succeeds. He has blistering speed on the basepaths, a real force to be reckoned with.

As far as pitching, the new-look rotation is also filled with promising prospects who have been dealing from the mound. The starting rotation features Leo Roy at the head, a multi-tool pitcher who usually throws a four-seam fastball, nasty 12-6 curve, and a change-up. However, he also had a cutter in his arsenal coming out from time to time. Darien Rodriguez has a classic 4-seam, slider, curve, in addition to a slurve to keep batters on their toes. Bruce Moore is the Corps' resident knuckleballer, who also has a blistering fastball and knuckle curve. Will Knight is a lefty pitcher, with both a two-seam and four-seam fastball to compliment his circle change. Rounding out the starting pitchers is Andrew Taylor, another lefty. His repertoire features a fastball, curve, and change-up.

The relieving corps is headed by Jack West, the most prominent primary reliever. His fastball and slider combo are deadly, but his occasional forkball and splitter also keeps batters on edge. The other primary reliever is Danny Jefferson, a lefty with a classic fastball, curve, and change-up. Andre Phillips and Matt Carter are the more specialist relievers, both with fastballs and curves. Phillips also features a solid sinker, while Carter also tosses a wicked change.

Finally, there's the closing staff, the setup reliever Carlos Gomez (four-seam, two-seam, slider, change-up), and the veteran Franklin Bell (who, despite his failure in the 10-3 game against Scootalove City, is still extremely dependable and has had a long, successful career). Bell has a brutal four-seam and change-up, in addition to a knuckle curve and forkball he uses more infrequently.

Despite the failures of the past, we can expect this squad to achieve some decent amounts of success.

THE CURRENT CAMPAIGN
This WBC sees the return of Casaran to the highest stage of baseball, which could've spelled either disaster or good fortune for the Corps. At least in Casaran if we begin underachieving we have the ability to play against inferior opponents to lift ourselves back up, rather than repeatedly having to play teams way above our punching level. Unfortunately for us, with 42 teams in the WBC, only 16 teams can qualify for the playoffs - and we're ranked #20. There would be no free playoff run for the Base Corps, as always.

The campaign started off with a tremendous victory - drawn randomly against an unranked team for the first series, we managed a clean sweep of the newbies in Joshenia, quickly elevating us to the top tier of the tournament table. Unfortunately, this earned us four dates with a Banija squad that has been catching fire lately. The clean sweep was returned right back to us, sending us to the middle of the pack. This set us up against the somewhat has-beens in Nova Anglicana, but their experience proved to be the winning element as they managed to sweep us as well.

The Base Corps, at this point, had just been utterly shut down after what looked to be a very promising start to the campaign. But, as aforementioned, with continued losses comes continuing opportunities to pull back up against lesser opponents. This turned to our favor in a heated series against HUElavia. Besides an unfortunate 10-inning loss at home to start the series, the Base Corps broke their 9-game losing streak to get right back into the chase. The most crucial moment of the series had to be in the final tilt, scoring 2 runs in the top of the 9th to bring the lead to the Corps. Despite giving up a run to tie the game, Lane Kavana managed to lead off the 10th with a solo home run to save the game, and Franklin Bell delivered a shaky two-inning save by shutting down HUElavia in the bottom of the 10th.

At the halfway point of the tournament schedule, Drawkland were still only floating around 28th, 2 wins from being .500, and 2 wins from being in a qualifying spot. Every series from now on is absolutely crucial, anything less than splitting a series could prove deadly to the Corps playoff chances.

With this in mind, Drawkland went off to face Aeprelh, what should've been an easy series against an unranked squad. However, disaster struck when Carlos Gomez blew a save in the top of the 9th by surrendering a 2-run homerun which put Aeprelh on top. With no offense to speak of in the bottom of the 9th, the series started off sour. Still, the Corps managed to patch the ragtag engine back together and win the next three to "take" the series. Finally, the Corps were at .500, but 10 wins and shoddy strength of victory kept them at #22 in the tournament.

The next matchup was to be against the fellow perennial underachievers in the United States of Devonta. Just like in the HUElavia series, a blown save at home led to a one-run loss to start the series off on the wrong foot. But, once again, like the HUElavia series, the Corps won the next three games of the series. Both games in Devonta were pitching nightmares, but exciting offensive barnburners. Drawkland scored 11 runs in both matchups, and managed to stave off late-game comebacks by Devonta that ended with them trailing by one and two runs by the end.

CAN THE BASE CORPS SUCCEED?
Now, with two series remaining, the Base Corps need to win both their remaining series, by sweep if possible. They now sit at #17 on the tournament table, tantalizingly close to the coveted playoff spots. In fact, with 13 wins, Drawkland could even be as high up as 14th on the table if not for their aforementioned terrible strength of victory. This is, unfortunately, to be expected, from a young team out of an underachieving baseball nation. Just look at the mere +9 run differential after 24 games, pretty much every win has been a tight affair.

The upcoming series is against The Sarian, a nation just recently returning to the sports scene. This same nation currently holds the last playoff spot currently available, and if Drawkland has any expectation of advancing to the playoffs, they need to win this series. A split could possibly keep them in contention, especially if nations above them fall, but a winning record is absolutely necessary. Obviously, we can't predict who our final series opponent could be, but it would be foolish to think that they would be a pushover opponent, especially if a playoff spot hangs in the balance.

If the Base Corps ever expects to escape the playoff bubble doldrums in the WBC, they eventually need to break the glass ceiling. The Net Corps did it, and they rocketed up to the IBC championship the same year they finally broke through. I won't say that's incredibly likely to happen again, but baseball is an unpredictable game, and the Base Corps has always had unpredictable luck. Someday, that unpredictable luck may be able to turn out for Drawkland's benefit, rather than detriment.

Against The Sarian, it's easy to say the Corps has a chance at getting a good set of results in and having their fortunes turn for the better. Or, they could just get completely swept and have their season ended for good! We are no experts, especially when it comes to the WBC. So really, all we can do is hope, pray, and say On Corps.

The HNFT Clubhouse, Capital Stadium, Hapilopper City
Right after the end of the Hapilopper/Terre Septentrionale series
Leroy Hunnisett sat back at his chair and smiled. He was probably going to face some sanctions before long and he had been yelled at by a few Hapiloppian government officials, but damn it, it was worth it. The Hapilopper/Terre Septentrionale series had gotten started the way he had wanted it to start, and it never really let off. For all intents and purposes, it might have been the most ridiculous series of the entire World Baseball Classic, and this includes a series with a game that went 19 innings.

In the top of the first inning of the first game, Leroy, having been rebuffed by his teammates in an effort to start a bench-clearing situation, took matters into his own hands, pulled down a drag bunt to third base and speared first baseman Szandra Szucsanszki in a close play. The benches cleared, and sure enough, the team rallied around this cause of winning at all costs. Leroy was ejected, as well as a handful of other players from both teams. When Leroy emerged from the pile, he was seen screaming at the fans, fired up like never before. His teammates were there with him, screaming as intensely as Leroy. Terry Blanchard had a cut under his right eye. Jordan Meadows’ nose was broken, and his face was covered with blood. Wes Sawyer’s left knuckle was bloody. But all of those players, and more were parading around the field letting the fans in the Northern Land know who was boss.

The other players didn’t admit it at the time, but the Hapilopper National Baseball Team had rallied around the cause. Leroy had gotten the team fired up, and they delivered in kind. In what turned out to be one of the wildest games of the season, the HNBT fended off a just-as-fired up Northern Land team, 14-12 in a 10-inning game that was just as chippy at the end as it was in the beginning. Pitchers from both teams threw at hitters. Catchers got railroaded at home plate. There were collisions at all the bases like nothing else.

But it was nothing personal, Leroy later said.

“Look, I like the Northmen,” Leroy said. “They’re a fiery group of players. But we had to do something, anything, to get going. They just happened to be in the way. One day I’d like to have a beer with them. I’d love to explain to them exactly what was going on.”

The next two games were just as close as ever, and just as physical as ever. There was a second bench-clearing skirmish in the second game, when Leroy had a pitch sail over his head in the first inning of the game. No punches were thrown in this one, but the message had been sent. It set the tone for a second wild game, one that the Thrashers won 5-4, with Aaron Armstrong getting the Haps out of a tough bottom of the 9th where the Nordiques came painfully close to tying it, but Aaron’s strong pitching stopped that from going any further.

In game three, at a jam-packed and rowdy Capital Stadium, more of the same happened – specifically, that of Hapilopper kicking ass. They won 6-5, and Mo Beverly and Terry Blanchard homered in both games. Both took their time to admire their home runs as they trotted around the bases. And Leroy got thrown at again early in the game, blowing a kiss at the starting pitcher before taking his base.

In the fourth game, however, it was out of control. Hapilopper won 11-4, on the strength of a grand slam from Jerome Hayden, who had gotten the hang of hitting curveballs. It seemed like the HNBT was firing on all cylinders. Sure, there would be hell to pay for the behavior exhibited by the team during the series, but it had all been worth it. All of it. The team had been brought together, and in good time, too.

Their next opponent, the last of the regular season, was the Sherpa Empire. The Sherpas were highly regarded in international baseball, so it was a damn good thing the Haps had gotten their shit together just before this last series. They couldn’t afford to drop a game or make a mistake with the Sherpas breathing down their necks. It was go time for the HNBT, and they were ready for the challenge.

Clutch Corps?

CLUTCH CORPS?
Written By: Cole Ford and Steven Craig

We're kinda in shock right now. All the times we've watched the Base Corps play in the WBC, we've kinda been conditioned to expect disgusting amounts of failure. If you ever wanted to just ruin somebody's soul, you could just make them watch Drawkland WBC campaigns on repeat, Clockwork Orange-style. But tonight, we've just seen the Base Corps cap off a clean sweep when it really mattered.

What comes after this is an entirely different ballgame (hahahaha LAUGH), but we'll get to that in a moment. Let's savor the moment for a bit.

THE SARIAN, GAME ONE
As we extensively covered in the previous article, we absolutely needed to come and take control against The Sarian. While they are an unranked team coming into this WBC, they still were ahead of Drawkland in the rankings, and for a good reason. Despite their newcomer status, they managed to make a little statement in their first outing. Even so, it's no excuse to sleep on the team. We needed wins, and we needed them now. So how did it turn out?

The first game was held at home in Drawkland, and it was a tightly-contested affair. This series started off with Andrew Tyler at the top of the rotation. If one were to objectively evaluate the talent on the Base Corps roster, you could likely say Tyler is the least skilled in the starting rotation. Which isn't exactly an insult, considering the caliber of the rotation (by Drawkian standards). In any case, it was set to be a tight matchup against The Sarian's Winter-Zonsondergang on the mound. Since the game was in Drawkland, the DH was in play.

The game was as even as even could get. After a quick first inning, The Sarian's Glaad Diankind managed to knock in Vrijheid V'Joosestaat with a solid base hit in the top of the second, but Tyler managed to strike out the next two batters to end the inning. To reply, Franky Jones knocked in Lane Kavana with a solid homerun to make the score 1-2 Drawkland. The lead would be short-lived, as Warme-Brood V'Vrijestaat responded with a home run of his own in the top of the third to tie the game back up. After these short blips though, both pitchers managed to keep control of the opposing offenses, at least until the fifth. The Base Corps ended up allowing Herfst-Zee V'Bondstaat a deep triple, and a sac fly from Warme-Brood put The Sarian up by one, but an RBI double by Mark Fields to knock in Chan Ford with two outs tied the game back up again.

Both pitchers lasted another inning before both being replaced in the 7th. Jack West did a solid job in the 7th and 8th, and Westen V'Bondstaat did fine in the 7th, but slipped up in the 8th by delivering an absolute meatball to Lane Kavana leading off the inning, who took Westen deep to break the tie and put Drawkland up by one. While the Base Corps couldn't back that score up with anything else, Franklin Bell came in for the top of the ninth and shut down The Sarian with two strikeouts and a ground out. Game one down, and one step closer to being in the playoffs.

THE SARIAN, GAME TWO
With a Game 1 victory safely secured, Game 2 of the series was on the agenda, and the last one to be held in Drawkland. This game would feature the brightest star of the current starting rotation, Leo Roy. His pitching repertoire is quite wide for a professional, and his intelligence and velocity is unmatched. Unfortunately, the game didn't start exactly to his liking, letting 2 men on base to start the inning. After getting a strikeout, Roy allowed a light ground out by Warme-Gloed, but in that, Herfst-Zee ran home and scored. The inning still ended with only one run being allowed, though.

Onbevreesd, the pitcher on the mound for The Sarian, had more of an ideal starting inning, managing two fly outs and a strikeout swinging to send things to the second inning. However, Leo Roy wasn't keen to repeat the first inning's mistakes, and he managed to get two K's and a foul fly out to end the inning quickly. All of a sudden, Onbevreesd was the one under the gun, as he allowed two home runs in the bottom of the second - one to lead off from Kavana, and one with two outs by Fields. The tables had turned, and now Drawkland appeared to be in the driver's seat. Leo Roy's momentum from the second inning continued, and Onbevreesd managed to piece himself back together.

The game really changed in the fifth inning not once, but twice. A chain of RBI doubles put The Sarian up 3-2, but Drawkland responded the next inning with an offensive explosion. A 3-run homerun by Lane Kavana instantly turned the tables back on the Base Corps' side, and after putting two more men on the bases, Onbevreesd was taken out of the game to put in Grote-Strijder out of the bullpen. He couldn't stop the bleeding though, and a line drive right over the third baseman's head by Fields scored both on base to put Drawkland up 3-7. The Base Corps didn't take their foot off the gas either, as both Roy and the offense continued to deal, holding The Sarian to zero runs through the eighth and scoring three more.

By the top of the ninth, nursing a 7-run lead, Leo Roy was kept in. Despite his fatigue, he still had The Sarian's lineup on the ropes, and despite a bad toss being taken deep by Warme-Gloed with two outs, one final strikeout (to make 13 on the game) ended the Game 2 effort, a big blowout win Drawkland hadn't had in weeks.

THE SARIAN, GAME THREE
With two wins in their pocket, Drawkland were now at least in the playoff picture, but two more wins were absolutely necessary to staying on top of things. There was no excuse, after the first two games, to come into The Sarian's home stadium and fall apart. Well, not that it wasn't entirely possible, considering the Base Corps' history, but still, we needed wins. One of the other stars on the pitching staff, Darien Rodriguez, was set to start this game, and that turned out to be a good choice. Vrijheid F'Haagenland was the starter for The Sarian, and they were due for a wild ride.

Over the course of the game, The Sarian's pitching staff simply couldn't stop the Drawkian attack. At least one hit was allowed every inning, and usually there were a couple in a row resulting in a run. Besides a three-run shot in the 4th inning by Fields, there actually weren't any homeruns scored throughout the game by either side. Rodriguez performed well, pitching a solid 7.0 innings before Gomez was put in to setup for the 8th inning. Gomez ended up allowing the third and final run by The Sarian in this matchup, but as the Corps were already up 9-3, he stayed in to finish the inning.

After another RBI by Taylor Smart scored Madison, the score hit the revered and despised 10-3 mark. This time, Franklin Bell came in and delivered. Rather than giving up 9 runs to lose in epic fashion, he struck out two swinging and forced an easy groundout to end the game and give a crucial Game 3 win to the Corps.

THE SARIAN, GAME FOUR
As we said in our previous article, if we were gonna make the playoffs, we needed to win this series. With 3 games in our pocket going into game 4, the mission had already been accomplished ... but to be safe, another win would be great. Little did we know that The Sarian would not give away a sweep that easily. With Bruce Moore, the up-and-coming knuckleballer on the mound, it would be no easy task for The Sarian offense to get going. The Sarian's Middernacht-Gloed was no pushover either. It was gonna be a tooth-and-nail fight in a game that could quite possibly decide the fate of either of these teams going to the playoffs (with the help of future retrospect of course).

Moore didn't start off with a good game. At first he kept the knuckleball rather scarce to try and get the batters stuck on his more usual pitches. This didn't work out as he hoped, as he surrendered a few hits in the first and second inning that eventually turned into runs. The Base Corps offense, on the other hand, was struggling, unlucky breaks and bad decision-making at the plate causing a three-inning run drought. Fortunately, great baserunning by Abram Kavana in the top of the 4th and a solid base hit by Madison got Drawkland on the board, behind as it was. Moore had fortunately begun to stump batters by then, and it wasn't until the 7th where scoring opened again, thanks to an inning leadoff homerun by Smart.

The time was up for Bruce Moore though, as Zomer-Briesje got his bat on a knuckler safely and slapped it for a two-run shot. After 6.1 IP, Moore was taken out and replaced by West on the mound. This arrangement worked quite well, as he shut down The Sarian for the next 3 innings. However, the Corps was still down 2-4 going into the top of the ninth, and needed something to keep them on the board. That something came from the bat of Bavid Ortey, the veteran PBL player in his first stint on the Corps. Knocking in him and Ford at second successfully tied the game up, and West kept the Sari offense at bay for the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

This was a dangerous place for the Corps to be, extra innings on the road in a Game 4, but ultimately it turned out to their advantage. Three whole innings passed with both teams managing to hold serve with extended relief pitchers. Despite a few players making it on base in those innings, the defenses held up and kept the tie. The turning point came in the top of the 13th. Lane Kavana, who'd been swinging for the fences all evening but failing to catch any traction, finally got hold of a Passie Kindvanlekker fastball and absolutely demolished it deep. His lone homer was all the Corps needed, and Franklin Bell came in the bottom of the 13th to finish off the exhausted Sari offense and sweep them out of the playoff picture.

THE PLAYOFF PUSH
After what's been a pleasantly surprising Casaran campaign for the Corps, there finally remains but 4 games on the schedule. With their recent success, it's not gonna be an easy series either - now that Drawkland is ranked #10 in the tournament table, they have to play against some top-tier opponents. Obviously we did that earlier after our 4-game sweep to start the campaign, and got swept right back by Banija. At least Banija are currently vying for the top spot and have already clinched a playoff spot, so we have some excuse in that respect.

Still, we need to be right on our game. We likely would've had to play our old ... "friends" Ethane, but due to some rematches occurring at the top, matchups were shuffled around, resulting in us playing against #8 Liventia, who are ranked 12th in the WBC rankings. Yet they've been a bit underachieving this year, not playing to their full potential. I say we could easily become a trap series for them, especially playing at home. Really, two wins at home would be enough to solidify our playoff spot, and any wins away would just be icing on the cake to help our seeding.

I shouldn't get ahead of myself on this. Really, we all know the Base Corps is really good, and I mean REALLY good, at completely fucking up. Like, just totally imploding. So really, who knows if we can pull this off without finding a way to just blow up in the most fascinating and grotesque way possible. After all, watching the Base Corps in clutch situations is like watching a slow motion trainwreck. Or a space shuttle exploding. Or a massive pile-up on the highway. So in any case, I feel relatively confident and excited for this final series against Liventia, but I'm certainly not betting any money on that shit, no sir.

In any case though, you know what to do, Base Corps, so get out and do it. On Corps, y'all, On Corps.

WRITING FROM IMGORTUR, VERBERGERKINNH - Hello everybody and welcome back to the Musings of an Armored Dinner Jacket. I'm sure by now that all of you ladles and gentlespoons are aware that I don't always get a blog post up on every day of every month of every year but hey, it's the anticipation of the next post that you guys all live for, right?

Anyway, if you've been watching the news lately, you'll all know that finally, finally, the new Locomotive Stadium has finally been completed. For everyone who isn't from Abanhfleft, the new Locomotive Stadium is going to be the new home ground for Locomotive Imgortur Football Club, which plays in the Fleftic Premier League. They're pretty much a mid-table club, or at least they were before they suddenly decided to join the relegation dogfight last season. Hey, if I'm not watching baseball, I'm watching football, both the kicking kind and the armored kind. A man has to have hobbies, you know. Anyway, the good news is that the new stadium is finally completed, meaning Locomotive can move back in there and nobody has to worry about potential scheduling conflicts between the FMLB and the Premier League now. And those footballers no longer have to worry about slipping up and twisting their ankles on the artificial turf that the groundskeepers have to put on top of the dirt.

Anyway, how did we get into this whole mess in the first place? As always, it's a long story, as long as it took for the stadium to be built, I think. I'm not kidding. Let me take y'all all the way back to 2014, with the conclusion of the 2013-14 Premier League season. Ludogorets Markovsky have just won their first ever PL title and Locomotive have finished comfortably in seventh place, basically the best of the rest. That was with part of the old stadium damaged by a series of mortar attacks from the Verbergerkinnh Revolutionary Independent Front. That, combined with the age of the stadium as well as the very outdated facilities within, finally convinced the owners of Locomotive to get rid of the thing and start anew. The demolition took the better part of two days, leaving behind an empty plot of land just waiting to have something constructed on it. The companies hired to build the stadium said that construction will be finished in about a year's time, a massively overoptimistic estimate that we can only see with the benefit of hindsight.

So no big deal. Everyone knew that the end of the old stadium was coming so the folks from Locomotive had already negotiated a deal with the Cubs to share the Stadion de December 27 while their new stadium was being built. Of course there was a bit of a quid pro quo going on there; Locomotive players and staff would get free tickets and even their own boxes for Cubs games, and Cubs players and staff would get free tickets and boxes to Locomotive games. Classic Fleftic corruption right there. The 2014-15 football season comes and goes, Arsenal de Releinthi are crowned champions of the Premier League for the fifth time, and the Verbergerkinnh Cubs are the defending Kopa ng Beisbol winners from back in the 2014 baseball season. Everyone's expecting the new Locomotive Stadium to be unveiled anytime soon. But what do we get? Only a single stand had been erected on the site, and the dimensions of the pitch hadn't even been carved out of the soil yet. What the heck is going on here?

Outsiders probably imagine corruption in Abanhfleft as this quaint wink-wink "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" thing, and our standup comedians have certainly done a lot to give that impression, but the truth is much more depressing than that. Obviously, there's a shit-ton of money involved: bribes to all of the relevant government authorities; kickbacks to all of those little companies owned or run by the relatives of the owners of the original construction company, and even the occasional ransom demand from the VRIF asking for money so that they won't "accidentally" target the site during one of their many attacks back in the day. But it's nothing new to the Fleftic people. We all sort of felt that the estimate of one year was a bit optimistic. Another year ought to do it, surely. By then everyone will have padded their pockets enough to not want anymore, and construction could finally continue as planned.

Another season comes and goes. Locomotive remain in the middle of the table. The Cubs failed to defend the Kopa ng Beisbol but we were back in the playoff picture, and only one additional stand of the new Locomotive Stadium had been erected alongside the first one. Now people are getting a little bit concerned. Okay, this project is moving at a snail's pace, even by Fleftic standards. Once again, what the heck is going on here? The answer, it turns out, would be revealed in the fifth year of construction, when it was discovered that there were numerous irregularities with the construction company who had made the winning bid for the stadium contract, from expired building permits to improperly accredited architects and engineers. It was all a big mess, and it was going to take at least five years to fix it. Of course the old company couldn't be trusted to build the stadium so a new constructor had to be found, and with that comes yet another round of bribes and kickbacks. It's a wonder the 460 million Fleftics in the country can stand living in these conditions.

Add to that the fact that the first company had actually been funneling money into the VRIF to keep them from attacking the site, and once the first company was kicked out of the project, the Kinnhese rebels were no longer getting paid protection money so they ramped up their attacks, lobbing mortar upon mortar on the site of the new stadium. And of course the construction workers do not like working under these conditions so they staged strikes and refused to work until the mortar attacks stopped, and they didn't care how it was done. Bribery had worked before, and everyone was sure that bribery was going to work again, but then the government did a so-called "pro gamer move" and launched a punitive campaign against the rebels. The campaign lasted from 2021 to 2024, with the government declaring victory after capturing and destroying the last major VRIF camp in the Ooijeende Mountains. Despite that, the occasional mortar still popped up, and despite numerous attempts to find their source (along with numerous firefights between police and army forces and the rebel holdouts) they couldn't find where the VRIF remnants were launching these mortars. It's all fucking messed up.

But in the end, the stadium was finally completed. As the old saying goes, sa hinaba-haba man ng prusisyon, babalik at babalik rin ito sa simbahan. There's no real translation I can give to it. It's not really "everything works out in the end", and it's also not really "what comes around goes around". Perhaps we can work with "once it's started, it will get finished". That sounds good enough for me. Locomotive Imgortur will now have a new stadium to call their own, and the Verbergerkinnh Cubs are once again the sole occupants of the Stadion de December 27. Locomotive fans will no longer have the right to blame the diamond for injuring their players and generally taking a toll on their team.

Sorry about the diversion there. There was nothing much to note about our series against Hampton Island (other than the fact that we swept them, and then the less said about the series against the Free Republics, the better. Still, we're very much in playoff contention at the moment. Not to jinx us or anything, but I think we might just be able to do well in this WBC. But you didn't hear that from me, and if anyone has jinxed us in this tournament, it's definitely not going to be me. I'm going to deny everything in court. This is the Armored Dinner Jacket saying ciao, peace. Catch you in my next post.

Banijan take aim for top of the table as they clinch playoff berth against Liventia

Banijan players celebrate clinching playoff berth in final game of series with Liventia

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- The Casaran stages of the World Baseball Classic are drawing down to a close, with just one four game series left. And certainly, there is plenty left to play for across the tournament in this final set of series, as the vast majority of the spots in the Round of 16(or the playoffs) remain open to be clinched, as teams like Hapilopper and South Covello do their best to break into the top 16. There are only two berths that have been wrapped up mathematically, and fortunately for us, one of them was the Kingdom of Banija. We have been near the top of the Casaran standings for the entirety of this World Baseball Classic, and that was reflected as we clinched our playoff berth with our team's 20th win with just four games to go in this tournament. The Banijans have impressed. They are tied for joint lead in Strength of Schedule with Abanhfleft, and hold the sole lead in Strength of Victory, which are the two major tiebreakers. We have the second best pitching staff in the tournament, having allowed just 92 runs throughout 28 games (though the Dragonflies of Ko-oren are in a distant first at that point having only allowed 74).

It was always going to be a tough series against a team as talented as Liventia, who are ranked 12th in the WBC rankings and who, even after dropping 3 of 4 to the Banijans, look likely to not only be a lock for the WBC knockout stages, but get a top 8 seed for the playoffs that will happen in the Free Republics. But let's get right into it, shall we? The first starter was Banta Jawara, who was coming off of a brilliant performance in his last start, when he pitched a complete game shutout against Ko-oren. He continued his own strong performance in this game, although clearly he wasn't as dominant as he pitched against the Dragonflies. The series started on the road for the Banijans, and the Banijans took an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning thanks to a two run blast by Lalo Diene. Runs batted in from the bottom of the order are important when the games get tougher and the opponents get stronger, and that is exactly what happened. That early lead gave Banta Jawara room to operate, and although he allowed a pair of solo home runs, he kept his opponents off balance for the vast majority of the game, and left after 7 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs, and with a 3-2 lead. The Banijans worked to give him insurance, with a run scored in the top of the 8th to make the score 4-2, then two more scored in the top of the 9th to make it 6-2. Setup man Sarjo Touré, who had pitched a 1-2-3 8th, stayed in to pitch the 9th since it was no longer a save situation. But keeping him in for 2 innings ended up being a mistake. Touré allowed a leadoff single, and then the crowd got right back into it when the second batter he faced hit the ball 450 feet to straightaway center- absolutely crushing it. That's when the closer, Demba Baturu, came in for the save situation, and he struck out the side to give the Banijans a 1-0 victory.

IT would be the Northern Moravica alumnus, Duta Condé, who would be called upon to pitch Game 2 of this series. The pitchers for both of these games were on, as they held echoes of Game 1 of the Ko-oren and Banija series. Neither pitcher seemed like they were going to yield- the Banijans only managed 5 baserunners the entire night, and Duta Condé retired 10 straight batters to start the game. While Banta Jawara, of course, threw a complete game, Duta Condé, while pitching majestically, was not going to be able to last a full game. He had to work through the lineup, and was tiring in the game. However, the Banijans were able to get him that lone run they would need for him to tack on the victory to his own record. With just two hits in the game so far, in the 8th, the top of the order finally woke up. Assan Mansaré led off the inning, and got a base hit to start the rally. A groundout to the right side of the field by Sohna allowed Assan Mansaré to advance to second base, with just one out. And Banija's #3 hitter then came up to the plate- Jonkong Sillah. What was going to happen here? Sillah had a stellar at-bat with Liventia's starter. It was a 13 pitch at-bat, as he worked the pitcher and wore him down. Finally, he got something to hit after fouling off pitch after pitch, and hit the ball down the right field line, just past the first baseman. A single, but Assan Mansaré got home standing up, and it was 1-0. While Yakuba Kah would immediately ground out, that was all they needed. Duta Condé pitched the 8th, and the closer, Baturu, pitched a perfect 1-2-3 9th inning to slam the door in the faces of LIventia. Their pitching staff was alive and well, and they went back to Istria, knowing that a lone victory would clinch them a berth in the Round of 16.

While the Banijans could not win their first game back in Istria, they won the second game back in style, as Ensa Suso dominated his final start of the classic, allowing just 1 earned run in 5.1 innings, and the back end of the bullpen slamming the door shut in the faces of Liventia. The team celebrated, as they should, as it was a major accomplishment. Ousman Kakay talked to reporters after the game. "We knew that our first goal, the basic goal, had to be getting back to the Round of 16. The knockout stages are not guaranteed to anybody, and they certainly are not guaranteed with the Casaran format, where you are playing tough opponent after tough opponent. We have played a gauntlet of a schedule to get to this point, and it shows that we have the strongest strength of schedule so far. To accomplish this, at this point in the tournament with four games remaining, considering the schedule that we have played, is a feat in its own right. So the players deserve to celebrate."

"But simply reaching the Round of 16 is most certainly not our goal. We haven't accomplished anything yet. Now that we are here, we have four tough games left against Hampton Island. Our next goal, of course, is to clinch as high of a seed as we possibly can- do what it takes against Hampton Island to get, at bare minimum, a top four seed for the knockouts. Of course, we all know the importance of a top four seed. It helps you control your matchup for the first couple of rounds of the knockout stages, and sets us up to continue advancing. Of course, we have tough, fierce opponents no matter where we play. Cassadaigua, for example, is looking like a bottom playoff seed in the table, but they're the #1 ranked side and the defending silver medalists. Not to mention, they beat us last time around. If you want to be the best, which we most certainly do, you have to beat the best, and we'll play whoever they tell us to play when we land in the Free Republics."

Ensuring their berth is clinched, without having to play tiebreaker games, is an advantage. There is, of course, a week(ICly) between the end of the group stages and the beginning of the Round of 16, time for the tiebreakers to be played. Gives the Banijans enough time to reset their rotation, as they switch to a four man rotation for the knockouts, and then get acclimated to the Free Republics. They plan on flying out to the Free Republics two days after the final game with Hampton Island, giving them the better part of the week to get adjusted, and acclimated, to their new surroundings in which they will chase the sport's greatest trophy. And of course, the higher they get, the better chance of success that they have. We're a game behind Ko-oren- why not go for it all, and try to get the #1 overall seed? While seeding, of course, won't matter on the field(outside of getting to used our Designated Hitter for a majority of every series), it will be a huge confidence for the Banijans, although of course it will certainly put a target on their backs as this 'golden generation' of baseball players chases the Banijans first major world championship.

Will they do what is necessary against Hampton Island to clinch, at least, that top four seed? You'll find out over the last four games of the Casaran stages.

The Dragonflies are in!

The 3-1 series wins were just a short-lived thing, they said. And they were wrong. Against Banija, Ko-oren won two games and lost two, to split the series right down the middle and to break the 3-1 series streak at long last. And what a series it was: with a .750 winning percentage, the rebels from Yoshima and other places are attracting high-profile team after high-profile team, from Abanhfleft, to Banija, Newmanistan, and all the other teams we've had some memorable knockout series against. And even with Ko-oren nearly topping the table, we're only five or six games away from 17th places, and the dreaded hell that is not qualifying for the Round of 16. Instead, few teams are making a late push and securing 3 or 4 wins in a series. Most teams stay relatively close to where they started out, though the higher you get, a 3-1 series win hurts your opponent more than it helps you. Anyhow, the 2-2 against Banija kept the team neutral. Top 5, barely any risk to drop out of the top 16, but no real chance of suddenly spiking towards 1st place either. The closer we get to the end, though, the more interesting the matchups around 16th place become. Those 3-1 series victories matter a lot there, because it's ever so crowded there. It will come down to the very last game for a lot of national teams. At the top, it's a matter of securing easy opponents by going for the top as much as possible. A 4-0 series win is pretty much unheard of here, but it's so sweet and you know that the losing party will just not get into the top 4 again.

The series against Banija is turning into a real rivalry, the greater Western Atlantian Oceanian series. Or any better name for it. Two teams with a huge focus on pitching abilities - it's what Ko-oren has been good at for a while, but also what Banija is scary for these days. Eight of the best pitchers in the Multiverse were out for this one, and as the days went on, the scores went up as hitting finally caught up to the incredible pitching. Tendencies were spotted, and hitting gradually increased. 15 runs in the fourth game of the series, that's almost criminal. The 1-0 and 3-0 wins earlier are a much better representation of these squads. At first, Banija was hurt by having their pitcher at bat, another way to keep scoring down. If only this series could have gone on for longer! Both teams defended their home successfully once and stole an away victory once. Two shutouts, one win in extra innings, and a cat-and-mouse game in betting on pitches and hits. The starters stayed on the mound for a very long time, and with these eight heroes in excellent form, who are you to take them off for a much worse replacement from the bullpen (in our case, at least). You don't want to be the first one to blink. And just when you think the aces are gone, Utada does this as the third in the rotation. A 3-0 win, with fifteen straight outs towards the end of his shift. And then the fourth game happened, all defence went out of the window and it's like the offensively-minded players on each team decided to show their worth before it's too late. 8-7 for Banija, in the end, but the neutral viewers had their highlight reel at least.

A great opponent to inspire even greater effort - it's hard to top the pitching versus Banija. It's hard to outdo the nine Ko-orenites based on their achievements there. But the Casaran stage isn't over, and good results mean that you continue to be at the top of the table, you keep meeting quality opponents, and Newmanistan is up.

Games one and two took place in Cougar Stadium, Centralia, the final two took place in Uvesaki Field, Echizen, the most hit-friendly place of the archipelago. Matsuda had the tall task of being the first starter after that 4-game complete series a little earlier. Matsuda is fifth for a reason, but did not show any weakness after letting that first run slip by. A short memory and excellent mental toughness are slowly becoming his strength, staying on through the sixth inning, and leaving the bullpen to allow two more runs. Meanwhile, Lema had a day and a half against Andrea Courville. Courville alone has a wider array of pitches than most of her Ko-orenite counterparts, but she can't seem to rely on her fastball. Unfortunately, she did try to put a lot of those in. Lema baited, then waited for them, and struck twice - for two runs batted in, in the first, and in the third inning. 4-3 the final score, and the series was off to a good start.

The second game was more of the same, a low-scoring affair but without either team being completely out of it. In fact, it was 1-1 at the end of the ninth, the rotation back to the aces. Brands was stellar against the Banijans, but slightly less perfect here, Hassler getting on base, and Collins getting her home two hits later. Brands' limited arsenal wasn't helping him here, but it got the job done and the Rockets couldn't repeat the feat. The equalising run came from a botched throw to home, and Esumi snuck across the plate while Vickers was still bobbling the ball. Janagimoto took the game to extra innings, keeping a clean sheet once again (and this bullpen is starting to look like a strength much more than in recent years!) and then taking two more strikeouts and a fly-out to set up an epic tenth. Janagimoto was up to the plate first, got on base. Ritsushima walked, Fuller overstayed her closing reputation, Peredo joined the baserunners, and Fuller kept pitching exactly the kind of balls that the hitters were expecting. Vamada was confident to simply swing for it. Janagimoto ran home, what would become the winning run (after he'd taken those three outs a little later), and Ritsushima joined him for a 3-1 win overall.

Image

Back home, in Uvesaki Field, Ko-oren was now defending a 2-0 series lead. Runs were getting a little more likely here, and pitchers weren't to expect a physical aid here. Gavreau and Burke experienced that, with Gavreau doing very well until giving up four consecutive hits and walks in the fourth. Burke had an even worse day, allowing just as many hits and walks in three consecutive innings, for Ko-oren to take a definitive 3-2 lead. Cevocalu knew how to use the environment just a little more, took care of business and went from the fifth inning all the way to the eighth, as great baserunning took Ko-oren to a 5-2 lead. The Rockets were then all out in the ninth but they did add the run, then losing the third out with two left on base. Oh, what could have been. Ko-oren are up 3-0 with the 5-3 win, and en route to the first sweep.

And that sweep would come. Much like in the final Banija game, all the pent up hits flowed out, at the expense of Utada (who had his career day just the week before) and Sullivan. It wasn't so much that single bad innings added to the total: hits, walks, errors just happened 'naturally' to both teams all night, with a 6-6 score after nine innings. Vamada had another decisive hit in the tenth, beating another Newmanistan closer to the punch, and scoring two runs for Ko-oren to take that very first 4-0 series win.

With a single opponent left to play, the Dragonflies take sole possession of first place (21-7), over Banija (20-8), and the Free Republics and Abanhfleft (19-9). Ko-oren and Banija are the only teams to qualify for the main event just yet. A minimum of 16 wins is needed to get to the WBC proper, but 18 wins or over seems to be a much safer bet. Just five teams are mathematically out of the Round of 16 - this format is a success already. 33 teams are at the mercy of the final series, and the Dragonflies are out there defending a first seed opportunity. We are up against the Free Republics, and we have to post at least the same record as Banija in order to keep first place, and stay ahead of them by one victory.

Sarang Oli took most things in stride, but being surrounded by talking ponies was too much, even for him. "Okay, I know it's weird being surrounded by talking ponies..." he began talking to his team, fidgeting awkwardly and speaking more shakily than usual. "But we've got a game to play, and the fans will never let us hear the end of it if we lose to a bunch of horses. Is that a zebra?" The players turned to see what Oli was reacting to and caught a glimpse of an Equestrian janitor with striped hair casually moseying down the hall, pushing a cart with a mop, a bucket of soapy water, and other cleaning supplies. If it wasn't a zebra, they'd done a good job of dyeing their hair. The stripes looked very natural. Oli tried to get his train of thought back on the rails and return to his pep talk: "Right, as I was saying... I know this is really weird, but at the end of the day, it's just another game, so let's just go out there and play some good baseball!"

Some of the Sherpa players coped better than others being asked to play against ponies. Luochong Zhuang was quite friendly with the ponies because he thought they were interesting -- but he still had a little trouble figuring out where the strike zone was, since the batters were shaped differently than usual. He gave up a couple of walks in the 3rd and 5th inning, which ended up costing the team because those runners went on to score.

Yawei Qu was offended that he'd been asked to play against ponies and he complained that the Equestrian pitchers' delivery was too confusing. When he started yelling at the umpire after getting called out on strikes, Oli came out and walked him back to the dugout, urging him to calm down -- but privately, Oli had already decided to bench Qu for the rest of the series.

Tukti Sahu was put in to start game 2. Everyone kind of had a feeling that this game would go better than game 1. They were getting more used to being surrounded by talking ponies, and they didn't have Qu's bad attitude ruining everyone's mood. Sahu got three hits including a two-run homer in the 6th inning as the Sherpas slugged their way to a 7-4 victory.

Game 3 saw the series move to Nanjing. The local fans giggled and gossiped at the Equestrian team, fascinated by them in the same way that children were fascinated by zoos and circus animals. A few kids tried to pet them or offer them snacks, like apples, plums, or steamed buns. Yangzhi Yi was put in the line-up, since Mandarin Park was his home park. Oli still did not want to deal with Qu's attitude, so he figured he may as well swap Qu out for someone that was familiar with the park and popular with the local fans.

They pulled out a win in game 3, but dropped game 4 -- and once again the fans and the press were talking about Mingma Al-Ali for all the wrong reasons. Oli decided he couldn't ignore it any longer. He announced that he would consider changing the starting rotation for the playoffs, assuming the Sherpas made it that far.

Ali was understandably frustrated. It wasn't just the bad press, though of course that was annoying. Even if nobody said anything, he just felt bad that he wasn't living up to his own expectations. Oli talked to him after the Equestrian States series, and explained his decision to change the rotation for the playoffs, "I don't blame you; I know you work as hard as anyone -- but I have to do what's best for the team."

Ali was still frustrated.

"We all get old, Mingma. I know you're doing the best you can. I just want to move Zhuang up in the rotation because he's been pitching really well. I might regret it when he starts talking about fruit flies, but he's still been pitching really well. "

For the last series of the Casaran stage, the Sherpas would be facing Hapilopper. When this was announced to the players, Lakpa Fang rolled his eyes and said, "Oh, Holy Mother, now we have to worry about iguanas in our lockers!"

Some of the other players exchanged confused glances. Most of them were not familiar with Hapilopper and did not see why they should worry about iguanas in their lockers. "What?" asked a thoroughly puzzled Rita Katiyar.

"In NSSCRA, the Hapiloppian drivers are always playing stupid pranks," Fang explained. "One time Chris Holmes put an iguana in Qiang Kai's car."

"Does Chris Holmes play baseball?" Sarang Oli asked.

"No, but it's not just him," said Fang. "This other time, Chet Byrd drove a whole race in a chicken costume instead of a firesuit."

"What?" said Oli.

"It's going to be one of those weeks, isn't it?" said Wangchu Namkha Qiang. "Where I have to listen to everyone talking about NSSCRA and asking if I'm related to Kai Qiang..."

Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Bengal Province, The Sherpa Empire
Right after the last game of the Hapilopper/Sherpa Empire Series
It was over. Try as they might, but the fact was, the road for the Hapilopper National Baseball Team, at least for the time being, had reached its conclusion. There would be no playoffs for the HNBT this season. Instead, the Haps would take the next flight out of the Sherpa Empire and the players would return to their domestic baseball teams in preparation for the next National League of Hapilopper season.

As the players returned to the clubhouse, there was a general feeling of melancholy. This time last year, the team was celebrating a stunning playoff berth. Sure, they got eliminated with extreme prejudice by the Free Republics, but the fact was, they were there, and nobody could take that away from them. They remembered the lone Hapiloppian jumping the left field fence in Trastamar, waving the blue, white and green with a beautiful passion. They remembered the Playoff Special uniforms. None of that was happening this year. Now, however, was not the time to point fingers and blame one or another for what had happened.

Instead, now was the time to reflect and get ready for the upcoming NLH season. Rivalries would be renewed, and that trademark physicality that had become a hallmark of Hapiloppian baseball would come out for all the Dominion to see. Players bumped fists and hugged each other. For some, it would be the last time they could be friendly with each other, at least for this year. It had been an interesting campaign. A disappointing and underwhelming one, but it was another one under the Hapiloppians’ belts.

There had been a general feeling amongst the Hapiloppians, however, that if they had to lose to anyone, at least it was the Sherpas. Sports fans in Hapilopper had become more than familiar with the Sherpa Empire, specifically through the NSSCRA stock car racing series. Names like Kai Qiang, Dinggu Wang and Rinzi Zakhilwal had become well-known to the Hapiloppian public for their exploits on the race track, and the Haps had a great respect for the Sherpas. Plus, the team from the Sherpa Empire was very clearly a pretty good baseball team, so they had that going for them too.

With that in mind, Sam Kitchens wrote a note to the Sherpa players. He wasn’t sure if they were going to understand it, what with there being a language barrier and everything, but if they could, that would be a great bonus. The note congratulated them on progressing to the playoffs, and expressed a hope that they would go far in the playoffs for the World Baseball Classic, and the HNBT would be cheering them on the whole way.

The team cleaned up their lockers, left for the airport and flew home. Most of them would be back for the next World Baseball Classic, but when they got back to Hapilopper, the next shoe fell.

The office of NLH Commissioner James Parkhurst, Carey Tower, Downtown Hapilopper City
Two days later
Upon arriving in Hapilopper, Sam Kitchens received a text message from the secretary of NLH Commissioner James Parkhurst. “Mr. Parkhurst wants to see you tomorrow morning at 9 AM sharp,” the message read.

That message generated some butterflies in Sam’s stomach. He knew what it was about, and he knew that James wasn’t inviting him to his office to have a nice three-martini lunch and share stories about what they had seen on the baseball diamond. That message wore on him badly, to the point where he couldn’t sleep that night.

When he got to Carey Tower in Downtown Hapilopper City, his stomach was in knots. He knew what the meeting was for, and his suspicions were confirmed when Parkhurst’s secretary gave him a sad look. “You did good, Sam,” she said. “Jim’s not too happy, though.”

Sam walked into Parkhurst’s office and took a seat.

“You know why you’re here, right?” Parkhurst said.

“Yeah,” Sam replied. “Before it happens, I just want to thank you for the opportunity and I’m sorry it didn’t turn out any better. I just hope that whoever you put in my place can lead this team to the title next season.”

Parkhurst looked at Sam sadly. He knew that Sam was one of the best managers in Hapiloppian baseball, and he knew that bringing together a group of baseball players from other teams was hardly an easy task, especially when some of those players couldn’t warm up to each other if they had been cremated together. But people expected results, and the league expected results.

“Sam, I’ve known you a long time,” Parkhurst said. “You were a damn good ballplayer back in the day, and you’re a damn good manager. But I don’t think it’s working out between you and the national team. I really hate doing this, because this is a prestige position, but we’ll have to go another way. We’ll be looking to hire someone else for the next WBC. Personally, I hope you can find a great job with one of the top teams. Thank you for what you’ve done, and understand that your work will always be appreciated.”

“Yes, sir.”

Sam Kitchens had been fired as the manager of the Hapilopper National Baseball Team, but he would be in demand among some of the teams in the NLH. By the end of the day, he was called by Mike Cochrane, the general manager of the new Surrey Retrievers baseball team, asking if he would like to join the team as their new field manager. By the end of the week, he and his family had moved 600 miles from Hapilopper City to a nice house south of downtown Surrey. Sam was fortunate. He landed on his feet.

Hapilopper will be back.

Banija finishes second in the Casaran table as they prepare for the World Baseball Classic knockout stages

Banijan hitters celebrate a home run against Hampton Island

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- You'll only go as far as your pitching takes you, as the saying goes. And in the last series of the Casaran stage of the World Baseball Classic, Banija's rotation looked to be turning it on. In this final series against Hampton Island, they were absolutely dominant. The Banijan pitching staff only allowed 6 runs over their final 72 innings of work of the Casaran stage, for a remarkable team ERA of 0.75 for the entirety of the series. A strong end to the Casaran stages, as the Banijans took 3 out of 4 from Hampton Island, and received a standing ovation from the fans in their final home game of Casaran play. We'll go through these games, all of them close except for the last one, and we'll tell you exactly what they mean as Banija takes it week off to fly to the Free Republics and prepare for the knockout stages of the World Baseball Classic, once again.

Games 1 and 2 were played at the gigantic National Stadium in Stafford City, the home of the Golden Bears. The stadium seats almost 69,000, quite a large amount for baseball, but the fans of the Golden Bears packed the house, waiting to see their baseball team in this Top 5 matchup. Both teams have come into this tournament with ambitions- Hampton Island came in ranked 8th in the multiverse, just a single spot behind the Banijans, and led by the fabulous Midnight, a non-sentient black bear. He was quite a bit to handle for the Banijans, though we'll get to that later. It was Assan Condé who would take the mound in this series, and he was able to keep his opponents off balance. Only 1 run earned through 6 innings, and most importantly, keeping the powerful Midnight off of the basepaths. With a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the 7th, Ousman Kakay turned to the bullpen, and out came Gibril Sowe, trying to record a hold. The first batter he faced- none other than Midnight himself. Midnight hit the ball pretty far, but it landed just short of the wall in left center and bounced over it for a ground rule double. The next play was what was really interesting. A single by Phil Haggarty went up the middle, and midnight rounded third, like a normal black bear would, and raced home. A great throw from the outfield by Duwa Sohna, and it was actually in time. However, with Midnight barreling towards the plate, catcher Xaaf Geele, instead of taking the hit, tried getting out of the bear's path and still making the tag. He couldn't, as he stepped out of position and when he dove back, leading with his glove, he was just too late. Midnight had scored the run to cut the lead in half. However, Sowe slammed the door on the inning, forcing a double play and then a fly out, to keep the lead at 3-2. The Banijans tacked on another one in the 9th, and they won, 4-2.

Banta Jawara took the mound in Game 2, and he had a pitcher's duel with Hampton Island's #5 starter, Justin Mohlander. The Hampton Island's only run in this game was a solo shot by Midnight, to lead off the second inning. But Banta Jawara kept battling away, and though he didn't have the most dominant performance, he was still pitching close to his peak, and getting himself in and out of jams. He went 5 and 2/3s innings, allowed 4 hits and 3 walks, and yet, his only run was on the solo home run allowed to Midnight. He, unfortunately, left the game with a no decision even after only allowing a lone run against him. At that point in the 6th, it looked set to be a pitcher's duel the whole way, so we brought in Tairu Sesay and allowed him to go to work for a few innings. He was absolutely brilliant against the Golden Bears lineup. He pitched 2 and 1/3 inning, allowing only a single to Midnight in the 7th inning, but otherwise, carving through the lineup. It was his own personal best pitching performance of the Classic, a good time for it to happen, as the knockout stages loom. At that point, Mohlander had only allowed one run, a home run to Jonkong Sillah. In the 7th, it would be Sillah again who would kick off a two out rally. He had singled to right field for a base hit with 2 outs, and that brought Yakuba Kah up to the plate. Kah earned a walk in a 10 pitch at-bat, fouling off 3 pitches in a row before getting that fourth ball, that just barely missed off of the outside corner of the plate. Men on 1st and 2nd, 1-1 game, and Golden Valley grad Cyper Kandeh at the plate. Kandeh hit a dribbler down the third base line, a tough ball for anyone to try and play. He sprinted down the first base line, and Haggarty sprinted toward the ball to try and barehand it before the throw, but he bobbled the ball when he grabbed it. It wasn't much of a bobble- but it was enough to where he couldn't grasp full control of the ball and when he picked it up, he could not throw it. Everybody was safe, and the Banijans had life. Mohlander was taken out for the southpaw Byron Shannon, to face Ouattara. No matter- Ouattara singled up the middle for a base hit, to give the Banijans a 2-1 lead. Kah tried to go home from second base, but he was thrown out on a great throw from Denny Ramirez. No matter- it was 2-1 for the Banijans, and that would be it for the scoring. Baturu pitched a perfect 1-2-3 9th inning for the Banijans 22nd win of the Casaran stages, and they went to Game 3.

Games 3 and 4 were the sendoff games for the Banijans. While we lost Game 3, we won big time in the final game of the Casaran stages, a great sendoff to the home fans with a 9-1 victory. Ensa Suso got to practice coming out of the bullpen, getting four outs himself at the end of the game, while he is going to do so when it counts most. The Banijans could not clinch the tournament's top seed, but they clinched the #2 overall seed on the final night, one game behind the top seeded Dragonflies, who won WBC 45, and a game ahead of the Revolutionaries, who had taken 3 of 4 from the Banijans, the only series in the Casaran stage that the Banijans lost. They lie on the same side of the bracket on the knockout stages, of course, so for those who like to look ahead, the chance for vengeance against the Revolutionaries could certainly present himself, if the bracket goes to chalk.

Ousman Kakay praised his team for their performance in the Casaran stages. "Everybody thought that our performance last year was a fluke, but we went out and proved that it most certainly was not. We do not fluke our way to the semifinals in this tournament, and like we said last time around, it was the start, the foundation, of something bigger. It took time to build this sport- but this generation of players was the first generation that grew up watching the team as kids, as we generally middled our way around the World Baseball Classic. And now, the bar is higher. We've gone toe to toe with the best teams the sport has to offer, and I believe that we have earned respect throughout these knockout stages. That is what we are looking for, more than anything- the opportunity to be respected by our peers, both by sports fans within the country and by baeball fans around the multiverse. That will only be earned on the field, and can only be earned by winning games. Now that we've done so consistently, for consecutive classics, that respect for Banija, as a baseball nation, has been earned."

"While the Casaran stages were excellent, and we are ecstatic with our place in the final table, we have not accomplished anything yet. Our goals have been clear throughout the tournament, and while our seeding facilitates this goal, it doesn't matter on the field. On the diamond, seeds are forgotten, it is simply about looking your opponent in the eye, and trying to beat them when the stakes are at an absolute xenith. That's what the knockout stages are. Short series, knowing that if you don't win 3 of 5, your tournament is over. 16 teams will be going at it in this format, pulling out all the stops, putting pitchers in weird spots and everything, and only one team will leave with a trophy in its grasp. We hope, of course, that team is us. Sports can be cruel and unforgiving- look at Hapilopper's squad. A very exciting team to watch, a very talented one, and yet, they find themselves on the outside looking in. But we're sure that we'll be competitive with them for years to come."

Banija, of course, has a slight advantage, having already played at General Milani Park, the stadium where they played their series against the Free Republics. Both teams have a week off, so of course both teams will be able to perfectly set their rotations for the knockout stages. A Mushroom Kingdom was unranked entering the tournament, so the fact that they are even here, ahead of a squad like Hapilopper, is an accomplishment in and of itself. They've scored more total runs than the Banijans during the knockout stages. In fact, every single team in the knockout stages, sans Saintland, has scored more total runs than the Banijans in the 32 games of Casaran play. Of course, Banija does have a lot of other stats going for it, like team ERA and strength of victory, but that is concerning. However, A Mushroom Kingdom has not played any games against big opponents. They have the lowest strength of victory, and the lowest strength of schedule, of any of the survivors of the Casaran stage. So an opponent like Banija, where we have lots of star power in our starting pitching, could be troubling.

All things considering, Banija are the betting favorites, and Central Istria Casino says the odds are 3/2 for the Banijans to win this series 3 games to 1, with 4/1 odds for the Banijans to win in a sweep, and 9/1 odds for the Banijans to win in 5. The odds are certainly in our favor. However, while for the neutral this looks like an easy series, the Banijans are going to have to be focused. Going out, attacking their opponents, and ending the series as quickly as possible has to be the Banijan goal. It will allow us to ensure that our rotation stays fresh for the rest of the postseason, as beyond A Mushroom Kingdom, two massive opponents loom- either Hampton Island, who Banija just played in a series against, or Cassadaigua, who are ranked #1 in the multiverse and beat the Banijans in the semifinals of the last Classic. But nothing should be taken for granted. The knockout stages are always going to be tough. Can we survive this opponent, and get to the next round unscathed? We'll find out soon enough.

(OOC: This is a carbon copy of the Liventian WBC46 roster. Please feel free to award bonus as appropriate with this knowledge. I'm posting it just to provide my playoff opponents with some names to work with. I am, for obvious reasons, unable to RP this WBC.)

The Baseball Federation of Liventia announces its 25-man roster for the 47th World Baseball Classic, as Liventia attempts to continue its playoff streak since the country returned to international play.

The team is colloquially known as the Red-and-Gold, after the colours of the Liventian flag (and their uniforms). There has not been a completed league season since WBC45, therefore all stats are from the last completed season. The Liventian Baseball Championship is currently made up of 24 teams in six divisions of four, with 12 in each conference (the National Baseball League and Challenge Baseball League). Teams are not 'franchises' and are based permanently in cities and towns.
The NBL does not use the designated hitter, while the CBL does. Sixteen teams qualify for the playoffs (three division winners plus next five best teams by record per conference) after a 104–game season. Note that therefore, the statistics provided below for each player are for a 104–game season, not 162, except for hitters' major league career averages.

Style modifier: +3

Starting Rotation
1. Oscar Bastable (#76), age 31, throws right, bats switch. Club: Olympton Rapiers
This season: 13–3, 2.13 ERA, 112 K, 25 BB, 1.03 WHIP, .225 OAVG
Last season: 12–7, 2.99 ERA, 134 K, 32 BB, 1.09 WHIP, .232 OAVG

One of just seven men to have thrown a no-hitter in the revived league. Hits 92–94 mph, with a four-seamer, slider, forkball and changeup.

2. Tony Metson (#22), age 34, throws right, bats right. Club: Orean Outer Oysters
This season: 9–5, 2.13 ERA, 119 K, 22 BB, 0.87 WHIP, .190 OAVG
Last season: 8–6, 2.31 ERA, 124 K, 26 BB, 0.84 WHIP, .187 OAVG

Ages like a fine wine, Metson continues to bamboozle opposing hitters at the plate. One of just two men to have thrown a perfect game in the league. 93–96 mph. Pitches: Changeup, cutter, four-seamer, two-seamer

3. Fraser Mansell (#27), age 22, throws right, bats left. Club: Colver Steamrollers
This season: 12–6, 2.25 ERA, 157 K, 20 BB, 0.83 WHIP, .190 OAVG
Last season: 12–2, 2.28 ERA, 124 K, 29 BB, 1.00 WHIP, .208 OAVG

Continued to dominate on the mound this season and then some. Led all pitchers in wins above replacement. A popular guy. Throws 92–94 mph. Pitches: Changeup, four-seamer, slider

4. Wayne Vann (#34), age 30, throws right, bats right. Club: Batogo Forest Raiders
This season: 6–4, 2.26 ERA, 111 K, 21 BB, 0.99 WHIP, .218 OAVG
Last season: 11–7, 3.19 ERA, 128 K, 33 BB, 1.13 WHIP, .237 OAVG

Don't look at Vann's win/loss record, for he received no run support this season for the 46–58 Raiders. Throws 94–96 mph, with an incredible six-pitch repertoire: forkball, four-seamer, splitter, cutter, slider and changeup.

5. Jonathan Twain (#20), age 22, throws right, bats right. Club: Port Cartfort Saboteurs
This season: 15–1, 2.64 ERA, 155 K, 33 BB, 1.20 WHIP, .250 OAVG
Last season: 8–5, 3.68 ERA, 130 K, 30 BB, 1.25 WHIP, .245 OAVG

This guy's got stuff and heat. Sure, he gets hit a bit more, but despite playing in Port Cartfort Park somehow only gave up six home runs this season. Led the league in wins. Registers 99–101 mph on the speed gun. Throws a deadly four-seamer, which he complements with a changeup, curveball, and circle change.

Bullpen
Frank Kenley (long relief #19), age 21, throws left, bats left. Club: Talbott South Hilltops
LBC: 6–1 2 SV, 1.53 ERA, 90 K, 16 BB, 1.05 WHIP, .217 OAVG; throws 92–94 mph, pitches: four-seamer, two-seamer, splitter

Arthur Laidler (long relief #12), age 27, throws right, bats left. Club: Leigham Timberjacks (AAA; Jesner)
AAA: 11–1, 2.52 ERA, 82 K, 13 BB, 0.92 WHIP, .217 OAVG. Throws 95–97 mph. Pitches: Cutter, four-seamer, changeup

Robin Holyday (long/middle relief #32), age 21, throws right, bats left. Club: Dover Outer South Bills
LBC: 0–1, 3.45 ERA, 18 K, 9 BB, 1.34 WHIP, .200 OAVG
AAA: 14–3 1 SV, 3.21 ERA, 152 K, 38 BB, 1.31 WHIP, .265 OAVG
. Throws 99–101 mph. Pitches: Four-seamer, curveball, changeup

Gary Hale (long/middle relief #35), age 34, throws right, bats right. Club: Neverend Gunslingers
LBC: 4–2 1 SV, 2.64 ERA, 95 K, 2 BB, 0.88 WHIP, .228 OAVG. A frankly silly 47.5 K/BB ratio this season justifies Hale's place in the side, despite his past struggles at WBC level. 96–98 mph. Throws: Four-seamer, two-seamer, splitter

Gabriel Mumford (middle relief #31), age 20, throws left, bats left. Club: City Centre Keys
LBC: 5–2 1 SV, 2.60 ERA, 97 K, 23 BB, 1.20 WHIP, .228 OAVG. A bit wild with his control but boy can he make batters look silly. Throws 98–100 mph. Pitches: Sinker, changeup, two-seamer.

Mark Staite (middle relief/set-up #33), age 21, throws right, bats right. Club: Neverend Gunslingers
LBC: 3–2 27 SV, 1.56 ERA, 56 K, 13 BB, 1.21 WHIP, .234 OAVG; throws 98–100 mph; pitches: four-seamer, sinker, curveball.

Aiden Horne (closer #77), age 27, throws right, bats right.
Plays in the Newmanistan Baseball League. Throws four-seamer, cutter, changeup.

Position players
C Finley Grainger (#83), age 33, throws right, bats right. Club: Orean Capital Tiger-Cats
This season (94 games): .378, 16 HR, 70 RBI, 75 BB, 55 K, 14 SB
Career avg (162 games): .344, 18 HR, 97 RBI, 81 BB, 90 K, 22 SB

Led the league in batting average and batting WAR. Has decent speed for a catcher and knows how to steal a bag or two.

1B Edward Mull (#17), age 21, throws left, bats left. Club: Talbott South Hilltops
This season (101 games): .309, 22 HR, 55 RBI, 30 BB, 81 K
Career avg (162 games): .304, 28 HR, 71 RBI, 35 BB, 99 K

Can't run. Has a bit of pop. Has a long career ahead of him at the top level.

2B Eddie Denve (#7), age 32, throws right, bats left. Club: Jesner Spin Doctors
This season (100 games): .328, 25 HR, 79 RBI, 44 BB, 72 K
Career avg (162 games): .313, 39 HR, 121 RBI, 66 BB, 91 K

Can also play first base, third base, and shortstop. A great defensive infielder who's got an eye for making contact and the power to boot. Could work more on avoiding striking out.

3B David Stelfox (#25), age 26, throws right, bats right. Club: Olympton Rapiers
This season (100 games): .335, 12 HR, 56 RBI, 35 BB, 83 K, 24 SB
Career avg (162 games): .291, 12 HR, 74 RBI, 42 BB, 163 K, 32 SB

Returns to the national team, having been on the WBC43 roster. Can also play first base and shortstop. Loves a steal. Strikes out a bit too often.

SS Kian Sergeant (#18), age 31, throws right, bats right; also plays 1B, 2B, 3B. Club: Colver Steamrollers
This season (83 games): .357, 2 HR, 35 RBI, 65 BB, 37 K, 14 SB
Career (162-game avg): .317, 3 HR, 56 RBI, 84 BB, 47 K, 23 SB

Can run. Great fielder. No pop in his bat. Second in the big leagues in batting average this season, only behind Grainger.

LF Ryan Farquharson (#30), age 37, throws right, bats right; can also play RF. Club: Lantgoma Snipers
This season (102 games): .335, 21 HR, 97 RBI, 60 BB, 106 K
Career (162-game avg): .326, 41 HR, 145 RBI, 90 BB, 167 K

He's not getting much younger but continues to tear the league apart and earn his spot on the national roster. Gap hitter, loves an extra base hit. Led the league, obviously, in XBH, doubles, and total bases.

CF Kane Roskilly (#37), age 22, throws right, bats right. Club: City Centre Keys
This season (97 games): .284, 18 HR, 57 RBI, 34 BB, 90 K, 30 SB
Career avg (162 games): .249, 17 HR, 65 RBI, 55 BB, 164 K, 53 SB

Another returnee to the national team, having been a bench pinch-runner on the WBC43 squad. Still has that speed and will to run, and has improved his batting and power somewhat. Has a better arm than York.

RF Andrew MacGeechan (#93), age 33, throws right, bats right. Club: Pardbo Bisons
This season (100 games): .308, 21 HR, 95 RBI, 41 BB, 68 K
Career avg (162 games): .290, 24 HR, 104 RBI, 75 BB, 109 K

Great arm from right field, and can play in left too. Loves finding the gap.

AMK Proceeds to play offs

In one of the biggest shocks in the WBC, the AMK ROyals have made it to the playoffs of the World Baseball Classic. A magnificent 18-14 record has helped the Royals and the fearsome threesome of Droopy Kong Jr, George Springs-DeShellback and Troy Shellowitzski have lead the team with batting averages over .325. Coming up in the playoffs is Banija, a powerhouse from Atlantian Oceania whose ranked #2. AMK has a good hitting line-up that could do damage against a pitching staff of Banijans that includes Assan Condé, Banta Jawara and hurler Demba Baturu who wears Lucky 13. THis could be a match up ripe for upset or Banija could cruise, what ever happens will be seen live on MKSports Channell 64. And here on the Mushroom Gazette.

There were no wild animals in the clubhouse at Capital Stadium in Hapilopper City. Lakpa Fang had checked. He had also made sure there were no moldy golf clubs emitting noxious fumes, and no booby traps involving spray cheese. Finjhok Chang walked in just as Fang was standing on a bench taking one last look around the tops of the lockers and the lighting fixtures on the ceiling.

"What are you doing, Lakpa?" Chang asked.

"I'm making sure the Hapiloppians didn't set up any pranks," Fang explained.

"And what if you fall off that bench while you're looking for lizards in the ceiling?"

"I'm not making up the stuff about Hapiloppian pranks," Fang insisted. "Qiang Kai almost missed out on an NSSCRA title because Chris Holmes put an iguana in his car and he didn't notice it until after the race started."

"Kai Qiang and Chris Holmes are not here," said Chang. "Thankfully. It was bad enough when Yang used to dance around the clubhouse in opera costumes."

Fang smiled as he was reminded of his first WBC, when Nawang Gurung's mom stuffed his bottomless suitcase with all kinds of useless junk, including a set of Chinese opera costumes, which Hanyi Yang discovered and tried on. "I miss Yang."

"I do too, now that you mention it, but get down from the bench and pretend you're a professional anyway. There aren't any lizards in the ceiling."

Fang looked pensive. "I wonder if theses ceiling tiles are the kind you can just push up and get into the ceiling..."

"Lakpa, you're a pitcher, not animal control."

Fortunately, the rest of the team were not too distracted by Fang's search of the premises. The Sherpas won 6-3.

The second game, the bullpen had a rough day and the Hapiloppians managed to mount a comeback in the 7th and 8th inning.

Then it was off to Kolkata with the series tied at one game apiece. As usual, Nawang Gurung's mom wanted to stuff everyone full with her home-cooked food and nag him about staying safe in his travels. Game 3 was an easy win. Akunjee pitched 7 scoreless innings, and the Sherpas were up 5-0 when Murthy came in to pitch the 8th, Murthy gave up a run, but that was the only run the Hapiloppians scored all day.

The 4th game was very back-and-forth, and it looked like it might turn into another Hapiloppian comeback. The Hapiloppians were certainly hungry for it and playing hard. They knew they need to win to have a chance at the playoffs -- but then they stranded a couple of runners and Bharadhwaj shut them down in the 9th.

There were hugs and happy cheers as the players came in from the field. Even grumpy old Sarang Oli cracked a smile. As things were winding down, Sam Kitchens, the Hapiloppian manager turned up with a note that he'd written to the Sherpa team. Oli had to think for a moment: who could he ask to translate it now that Debashish Morrison had married into the imperial family and left baseball? "Hey, Nawang, they speak English in North Prarie, right? Can you read this?"

Nawang Gurung came over and looked at the note. His English wasn't great, but he got the gist of it. He thanked Kitchens in broken English for the good wishes, then did his best to translate the note for his teammates.

MUSINGS OF AN ARMORED DINNER JACKET

IMPOSSIBLE IS SOMETHING

WRITING FROM IMGORTUR, VERBERGERKINNH - It's been a quiet few days for me back then, but I've got my affairs sorted out now, and now I am back to my blog and ready to entertain all of you ladles and gentlespoons. Hello everybody and welcome back to the Musings of an Armored Dinner Jacket. And well, well, well. Who would have expected this to happen? Abanhfleft through to the next stage of the World Baseball Classic, and as one of the higher seeds as well. When's the last time that this has happened to us? Never, right? No, honestly, I can't remember the last time that the Revolution has ever done this well for pretty much an entire WBC first stage. This is all very strange. I can feel a strange sensation coursing through my body. I can't describe what it feels like, and I also don't know why I'm feeling it.

One thing I have learned throughout my baseball career though is that I should never trust my feelings. Never ever. In my very first season with Verbergerkinnh, 2014 I think it was, I had this weird feeling that we were only a few games away from disaster, i.e. getting knocked out of the Kopa ng Beisbol playoffs. What happened next? Well, we only went on and won the whole bloody thing. Then there was the 2020 season where I thought that the Cubs had the strongest team imaginable and we had the easiest possible draw in the first round of the Kopa. Well, the Braganopolis Strike only went and swept the Cubs in the first round before going on to win the bloody Kopa ng Beisbol. There are at least a dozen other instances just in baseball where I can very much tell you that my gut feeling was not only wrong but the complete opposite of what actually happened, but I think you understand what I'm getting at.

And it's not just baseball where my gut feeling has completely failed me. Football, basketball, gridiron, even rugby and lacrosse; more often than not I get a feeling that ends up being the complete opposite feeling I should have felt. If I felt bad and nervous about a game, we would end up winning it comfortably. If I had a good feeling about the upcoming game then it would become a nerve-wracking affair where the result is never completely to my own satisfaction. So why in the world do I continue to keep tabs on my own gut feelings if they end up being more wrong than right? Well, that's the thing though. There are a few moments here and there where my gut instinct has got it right, and I've actually purposed those correct gut feelings into minor betting success. I make the odd bet here and there on the odd game if I've got a feeling about it, and surprisingly enough more so than not these bets do work out. Of course, I don't bet on any baseball games; I'd rather not have that monkey on my back, thank you very much. And I don't always bet on everything I can; if I did, that would have already been a gambling addiction, and that's not something I want to mess around with either.

In my personal life, my gut feeling has been quite hit and miss as well. I remember a girlfriend that I had where, after a few years in and quite a few fights about money, I began having this feeling where I thought, "This isn't working out and it isn't ever going to work out. Time to break up and find someone who loves you for who you are." But this gut feeling popped up at around the same time that it had been going very wrong for me so I didn't listen to it. The toxicity between me and this girlfriend only grew and grew after that, and things finally came to a head when I finally caught her skimming off of my paychecks, something that she had been doing for quite a long time to me by the time I discovered it. I can't believe that it took me that long to find out, seeing as the signs had been there all along, but that's hindsight for you. The last I heard of her, she was sucking off another baseball player in Sarvusdalamoive. But I'm going to take the high road and leave things at that. There's no need to escalate things. You know who you are, and if you're reading this. I only wish you the best in your future. I know a lot of other guys who wouldn't have been as nice and forgiving as I am if they were in my shoes.

And then came the time that I made the biggest decision of my life, way bigger than even my decision to retire. I drifted in and out of relationships after breaking it off with the gold digger, and I felt lost and aimless for what felt like an eternity but in reality was just about three years. I partied a lot and slept around, I'll admit. It was even on the news back then. And then, while I was off on an offseason fundraiser with the team, I met her. The love of my life, the last woman I would ever fall in love with. Zenaida, Zenaida. Sometimes I still feel that you have no idea just how much you have changed my life. As soon as I met you, my heart (and my gut) told me I should make my move, and while I know that things were very much awkward at the start, we grew into each other and became the team that we are now.

As soon as I met Zenaida, I knew that I was going to marry her. No question about that. The one question I did have though was when I should do it, Of course I couldn't just pop the question to her right then and there, but when was the right time? My gut didn't help me out at all there, but then came Game 6 of the 2024 Kopa ng Beisbol. The Cubs won the game 8-3, and we won the series against the Effelenendro Islanders 4-2 for me to lift my third ever Kopa with Verbergerkinnh. While the celebrations were going on in the diamond, my gut suddenly began saying, "Do it. Do it!" And I knew exactly what it meant. I dug through my bag for the engagement ring, took it out of the box and put it in my pocket, and then while Zen and I were being interviewed I went down on my knee and proposed on live television. I can't believe that this is only the first time it's ever been done, but what I can't believe more is the fact that Zen said yes! Oh, gut feeling, why are you so hit and miss?

Yeah, this post has pretty much become the story of my inconsistent gut feeling. I think this went in that direction because I simply cannot tell if I should feel good or bad about our coming series against Liventia. What I can tell you however is that Abanhfleft's pitching rotation will restart starting with the Liventia series. This means that Bertram Benedetto will start Game 1, Guillermo Rodriguez starts Game 2, Sanford Capuano will throw for Game 3 and so on and so forth. I know it's not much, but this has been tradition for the Revolution since time immemorial. We'll just have to roll with it. This is the Armored Dinner Jacket saying ciao, peace. Catch you in my next post.

The Busukuma Post

Who is running? What are they running on?

Image
Kizza Makoni at a CRU election rally

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- Elections, of course do not occur in a vacuum- they occur often in the shadow of the previous election held. And that is most certainly true in Banija. In the first part of the election primer, we talked about how the system works- the technicalities. Who can vote, who can run, how the system works, what the heck the Lukiiko is, etc... In the second part of the election primer, we talked about the last election results, and setting the scene.

Now, last but certainly not least, we go over who is runnign. We talk about the parties, we talk about their leaders- who is running? What the heck is CRU? Who is Kizza Makoni? Voting, of course, occured yesterday. But with Count Day not until tonight, this will give you, the reader, a chance to figure out who the heck you are rooting for when the results come, and why this election is such a big deal. Without further ado!

1. The Collective Resistance Union(CRU)
Current Seats: 265. Current Status: Single Party Majority Government. Current Leader: Katikkiro Kizza Makoni(10 years). Ideology: Left.

The CRU has led a pair of consecutive majority governments, for the last 9 years. For those who do not know, Kizza Makoni came to power in the first elections after the fall of the Matthias Mutebi, after Banija lived under direct rule of Kabaka Albert III for 12 months, following our surrender in the Banijan-Equestrian War. Many pundits generally agree that the CRU 'fell' into government. Mutebi's government was only elected after the two major parties at the time(FJP & PPM) got crushed after the RTC corruption scandal, and then we all know what happened when the Defiance Coalition got elected.

Kizza Makoni has always wanted to make a big show about standing up against the right. Of course, Banija is a conservative country, especially socially, when you see the deep influence that the Puritan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the national church, has on this nation. And then, one day, boom- his party was the only one that wasn't tainted by a foolish war and outright corruption with the country's largest corporation, and he found himself in power with a majority government. Got over 50% of the popular vote, 290 seats, and could do whatever he wanted.

In his second term, he won a reduced majority, but still- the party that was used to being the smaller electoral bloc, and now they were in their second term of single party majority governance? It was essentially a miracle. They've accomplished so much- ending gender segregation in sports, moving the country past Mutebi, and now they want a third term. This platform is the most radical they've ever had. The platform vageuly mentions reproductive rights, and many on the right have accused them of wanting to legalize abortion, though Makoni has never publicly taken a stance on the issue. They want to pass legislation ensuring equal opportunity in education for men and women. Economic reforms to ensure equality. But can he get a third term to do so?

2. People's Protection Movement(PPM).
Current Seats: 155. Current Status: Official Opposition. Current Leader: Kiongozi Emmanuel Saba(Less than 1 year). Ideology: Center-Right.

The People's Protection Movement, out of power for the better part of two decades now. They are itching to get back in, and they will have their best shot yet to take down the left-wing government of Kizza Makoni. Emmanuel Saba is their shot now. Just getting into power, he is being forced into an election while his fight are wet. And yet, the youngster is excited.

Only 37, if his party can make up the 15 point gap between the PPM and the CRU, then they will make him the youngest Katikkiro ever. But what do they stand for? They stand for a change of pace, and a return to Banija's traditional values, both economically and socially, but especially economically. They are for a more market-oriented economic system- they want to end reliance on foreign aid, which has been rapidly reduced since participation in the Echani Path to Prosperity. They want to work to bring refugees home, from abroad. They want to keep out Farf refugees.

They also believe that knowledge in the country's native vernacular language, Olusanke, is something that must be preserved at all costs, as a globalizing national economy sees English elevated more and more in the country. They propose ensuring that Banijan cultural ministers promote the Olusanke language both at home and abroad, and the language to foreigners. They will also provide funding for foreign Banijan embassies to provide Olusanke classes, though they do admit that embassies and the Foreign Ministry are under the control of His Majesty, and not the elected government.

3. Christian Patriots League(CPL)
Current Seats: 58. Current Status: Third Party. Current Leader: Isaiah Lutombo(3 years). Ideology: Christian Right.

The CPL is back for another election. Internationally, of course, they were known for being junior partners in Matthias Mutebi's government- though of course, they were very famously sidelined, as Mutebi and Hatabu Danso pretty much made every single major decision on their own, and abhorred the traditional cabinet processes. While the Defiance Coalition remains essentially dead in Banija(although very much alive in Darmen), the CPL was largely forgiven for their role in that government, as they didn't have much of a role.

Isaiah Lutombo leads the party this time around. They, of course, are running on a traditional platform, mostly focused on social issues. Protect the place of the faith within the country, severely limit the rights of other faiths to evangelize in Banija, strict limits on publicly proclaiming atheism, and what not. Economically, they align a lot with the People's Protection Movement, though they are less market oriented and more tradition oriented in that sense.

They believe that an Air Force Academy should be built in the country. Presently, there is a Naval Academy and an Army Officer's Academy, but no Air Force one- Banijan Air Force officers generally train throughout the Commonwealth, and in other allied nations. Their stronghold is the same as the PPM's stronghold- the Moravica Region. But of course, they are concentrated in the North and in other rural areas, trying to win seats out there. They will look to improve their own standing in this Lukiiko- maybe get to opposition status?

4. Free Justice Party(FJP)
Current Seats: 20. Current Status: Fourth Party. Current Leader: Israel Manafosa(2 years). Ideology: Center-Left.

This is a party that has lost its way. The People's Protection Movement has largely recovered from the corruption scandal- but not the FJP. They found a lot of their party move away from the FJP towards the CRU, and a lot of that support never returned. Manafosa is here to try and bring energy to this centrist movement, but they cannot.

They are focused on uniting the country via economic issues. They support economic justice- better healthcare, more transparency in government, stronger unions, etc... This a party that is so small, and yet, especially among MLs, there is a strong dislike of the Collective Resistance Union. Even though the CRU is in power, they view them as a bunch of radicals, and there are tensions between the two.

The Free Justice Party will be basing a lot of its campaign in Ankole. That's the only region where the party holds constituency seats, and you saw them hit the region hard in pursuit of seats. Letting the CRU get 29/35 seats in their traditional heartland is something that they cannot fathom, and they believe that they can increase their share of the vote in that region.

5. Other Parties

There are really no other parties that are competing for seats, attempting to break into the Lukiiko. The Radical Republican Party always tries to make a name for itself, but they of course were banned from the election by the Guardian Council, for advocating republicanism and advocating the separation of church and state. This is something that is common in Banija, and common from this party. They protested polls before, but they've never really caught on as an energetic force.

The Mukegara have their own set, but considering they just have one person who sits in a party that doesn't compete in every seat(therefore one that isn't recognized by the Speaker), we don't really talk about those, since they count as an independent anyways. The parties generally all endorse the Speaker, as happened this time, so he will run uncontested.

But yes- those are the parties. YOu've seen it all. The results will roll in tonight- who will triumph?

While the Sherpa national baseball team was struggling against Nova Anglicana on the field, trouble was brewing behind the scenes in the halls of power. Namri Patel, the director of the Sports Department, was making noises about replacing Sarang Oli as manager of the national baseball team if they couldn't turn things around. Preet Tamang, the Commissioner of SIBA, was saying he still had faith in Oli and reminding people that making it into the playoffs was nothing to sneeze at.

The first game had been close, and really could have gone either way, but Jake Bryan caught a bit of a lucky break in the 11th inning and scored the game-winning run for Nova Anglicana.

The second game was one of those games when Tsheri Pham's nerves got to him and he couldn't find the strike zone. Where the first game had gone into extra innings, the bullpen was not ready to pick up the slack. The Sherpas lost 8-4. In many a living room across the Empire, fans were groaning, rolling their eyes, and tossing peanut shells and Chirpy Chhurpi cheese snacks at their TVs.

After the game, Changyi Ihawa came around looking for interviews. Post game interviews were always trickier after a loss. You had to find the right balance between sounding disappointed about the loss, but still being perky enough to be pleasant on TV. "A lot of fans have been saying this team is underperforming this year," she said to Sarang Oli. "What do you have to say to those people?"

Oli looked like he really didn't want to be there and didn't want to answer the question, but he spoke anyway. "Well, it depends what you mean by 'underperforming.' If you mean what happened today, we can do better than that. Sometimes you have a game that just doesn't go your way, and the only thing you can do about it is come back the next day and do better. So that's what happened today. Tomorrow, we'll have Zhuang on the mound, who's been having a lot of success in this Classic, and we'll try to do better."

"So you are changing the rotation for the playoffs?"

"Yeah, I think it makes sense to put Zhuang in a position where he's going to have a start in every series, not only when it goes the whole five games."

When she was done talking to Oli, Changyi asked some of the players what they thought about him as a manager and how they felt about Namri Patel threatening to fire him. The general consensus was that Namri Patel was an idiot. "Old Man Oli might seem grumpy, but he knows what he's doing," Kusang Banerjee said. "I don't think any of us have a problem playing for him."

"Namri Patel shouldn't be talking," said Kami Akunjee. "He cut our budget and the quality of our scouting has definitely suffered from that. If we have to have a skake-up, it is what it is, but you can't place all the blame on Oli."

"Patel has no respect," Tandi Ojha added indignantly.

Banijan pitching 'disastrous' as they stand on the brink of elimination from the World Baseball Classic

Image
Manager Ousman Kakay and 1st base coach Cyrus Marshall share a look

EAST POINT, ORLANDIANA, FREE REPUBLICS- Well, that didn't go well. It was a poor weekend to be a Banijan sports fan- losing two games in this series, as well as losing their WLC opener. The team came in as heavy favorites against the unranked side, A Mushroom Kingdom. The Banijans had earned the #2 spot in the Casaran table, earning their chops against the tournament's best sides- beating teams like Drawkland, the Free Republics, Liventia, Hampton Island, and splitting a series with Ko-oren. They dropped three of four to Abanhfleft, but otherwise, they projected overwhelming strength and confidence. A Mushroom Kingdom had a nice entry in their first ever tournament- an unranked side making it directly to the knockout stages, over the likes of Hapilopper, was an impressive feat in and of itself. But most people felt that Banija's pitching staff would give them a decisive advantage, and certainly, many media members, including us at this magazine, overlooked A Mushroom Kingdom, and didn't give them a chance.

Boy, we could not have been more wrong.

The pitching staff that had brought Banija so far in the World Baseball Classic to this point faltered. Both teams had the opportunity to reset their rotation, of course, and that is exactly what the Banijans did, with their ace, Assan Condé, taking the mound. Now, of course, this loss can't be pinned on him- he actually had a decent start. He allowed two earned runs over 6 innings in a quality start, but left with the game tied at 2, as Shane Shelton of A Mushroom Kingdom matched him pitch for pitch. But then again, the problem for Banija going into the Classic was always going to be the bullpen- and boy, did it falter in a big way. Gibril Sowe allowed earned runs in both the 7th and the 8th innings, and he left the game with 1 out in the 8th, the bases loaded, at 4-2. While Darboe came up and got a double play to limit the damage, it was already done. Banijan bats did rally in the bottom half of the inning, with a string of extra base hits started by Duwa Sohna eventually allowing the game to be tied at 4. But we then put our closer, Demba Baturu, on the mound in a non-save situation in the top of the 9th- and he allowed a solo home run.

A disappointing result, after a disappointing performance from the Banijan bullpen. But then, with Banta Jawara coming on the mound, the hope was, maybe this team could come out and tie the series at 1 game a piece? But Jawara's start was a flaming disaster from the word go. He lasted 2/3s of a single inning, allowed 5 earned runs on 6 hits, and got just one punchout. It was a disastrous start for the excellent pitcher. You know what the worst part about it was? It absolutely killed Banija's momentum from the top of the 1st inning. The Banijans, knowing that they wanted a fast start after the late game bullpen collapse from the night before, came out swinging. Assan Mansaré came out with a leadoff single, to give the national team a man on base to start the game. A Sohna single moved him up to second, meaning two men on with nobody out, and Sillah at the plate. Sillah ripped the ball down the right field line, that bounced over the wall for a RBI ground-rule double. Men on 2nd and 3rd, nobody out, and a 1-0 lead for the Banijans.

The defending bronze medalists were not done scoring at this point, however. A single up the middle from Yakuba Kah saw Sohna easily reach home, to make it 2-0. Sillah, instead of stopping at 3rd, was waved home by the third base coach, Bamba Sanneh. Sillah was not the fleetest of foot, but Sanneh has always felt the key to winning baseball games, and getting that extra run, is sometimes to put pressure on the defense to react and make a play. And as George Springs-DeShellback came charging up on the ball, it was clear that he would need a great throw to get Sillah out. And he not only gave a great throw- it was an absolutely perfect throw from the outfield. Straight to the glove of the catcher, about three feet down the third base line, allowing the catcher to not get absolutely ran over, and make quite an easy tag. The Banijans had gambled and lost, but still- they were up 2-0, with 1 out, with a man on first base. It was a good place to be in. Cyper Kandeh singled next, then Ouattara singling brought home Kah. A double play ball ended the inning, but still, spotting Banta Jawara a 3-0 lead before he even throws his first pitch is usually a good sign.

That's what made Game 2 so disheartening. The Banijans started out so strongly, put themselves in a position to control the game- and then it was all given up by one of Banija's star pitchers. Not something that you see often, but Jawara getting so thoroughly dominated that the Banijans had to reach back into the bullpen so early. While Ensa Suso did his job, pitching 3 and 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the Banijans in the game, the rest of the bullpen could not hold up their end of the bargain. It was a tough job, of course, to ask the pen to pitch 8.1 innings. But this was the knockouts- to get somewhere you've never been, you will have to do something that you've never done. Absolutely terrible. While the Banijans did tie the game at 5, A Mushroom Kingdom pounded on the back end of the Banijan bullpen once again, score one in the 5th, one in the 6th, and another in the 8th, to win, 8-5, over the Banijans, and watch Zoe Lee get their second straight save of the series.

Of course, now the Banijans are facing elimination. Down 2-0 as heavy favorites, the margin for error is absolutely none. It will be Duta Condé who will take the mound for Game 3. There are rumors that Assan Condé will be asked to pitch on three days rest for Game 4, if we are lucky enough to force one, but Ousman Kakay has insisted that right now, the Banijans are putting in an 'all hands on deck effort'. "It is the knockout stages- everything has to be on the table." Said Ousman Kakay. "It's all hands on deck- whoever needs to come out and help our team win, will be called upon and asked to perform. The pressure is on- if we lose any one of our next three games, to a team that just beat us twice in a row, then we'll see ourselves eliminated from this tournament, and so early. That would be a major disappointment, considering our goals and our hopes coming into this tournament. We need to take this one game at a time, however- if we keep looking so far into the future, then we'll beat on the next plane to Istria. We're coming out in Game 3, an elimination game, with Duta Condé on the mound. We need to come out with focus, with intensity, and with energy, and try to play for good results. If we get to Game 4, we'll talk about who starts that game then."

Will this classic, that started with so much hope and promise, end disastrously? We'll find out soon enough.

Celebrating your first win, a narrow 5-4 affair over the Javelins, the manager is now evaluating everyone's performance.

As in, it's going to take a while to put the numbers from this game into some format that allows me to check on your progress. Experience points are handed out each match, and they're never very many, but we have to go through it at some point. Seriously, I haven't done this in forever, judging from the load of dust on this box.

"What does it entail?"

There's a bunch of formulas to put your stats into. Hits, at-bats, other notable things, you name it. I suppose, from how it went, that Uchidame moves into a starting spot as a left fielder, and Hilario goes up the ranks a little to become a relief pitcher, instead of someone on the bleachers. Actually, let's just roll with that. What do you want to do next, Hilario?

"Rest up given my pitch count, get more time with the catcher in training, get to know the team a little more, hang out with them, pick up chicks."

And you, Uchidame?

"What are my options?"

Mostly things to focus on in training, but anything goes, really. Based on Hilario's answers, I'm giving him extra training in pitching, communication, which luckily for him is a charisma stat. Uchidame's good at speed and hitting, so you could focus on those. Just to look ahead to the end of the first season: then you'll get a choice for your player's role. As an outfielder, you can branch out in one of four ways: a defensive hero (so with a focus on fielding), a speed demon (baserunning and speed), contact hitting (guess which stat that is) or power hitting. Your luck is insanely high, so you can bank on that as well...

"That's dead seriously what I created this character for."

Oh well-

"So I'm off to gamble on my own team's games"

Are you sure?

"So, as I'm Hilario, can I interrupt my good colleague here?"

As you wish.

"Are you out of your mind? Gambling on your own games? That's gotta carry in-game consequences!"

"Yeah, loads of extra money!"

"Well, if Uchidame can do that, I'm starting up a campaign of DHs and Diamonds inside the game with my Misa Mustangs teammates!"

Uh, that's not exactly-

"I can do anything I want in this game! If he can gamble, I can do this!"

A little dramatic... and as a GM I'm desperate to railroad this campaign as much as possible, so I'm saying no to both your propositions. Uchidame, the question stands, what do you want to do?

"Ok, get me training in power hitting and baserunning then."

As a combination? Sure, whatever you want. I don't know if you've seen most power hitters, but they're strong, not fast.

"Uchidame's going to break some records then, as a baserunning homerun hitter."

Sure. Noted. We'll check up on your progress in these skills in an in-game month, until that time there's more games to play. How about... sixth inning, you're both playing, 5-0 down, everything's going wrong. How are you going to turn this around? Hilario, three outs to go this inning, what do you do?

"Look closely at the catcher's signals."

That adds a bonus based on communication to your pitching. It also adds a small chance that the opposition can steal signs, though.

"Sure. Let's do this."

Roll, please...

---

That's the third out, still 5-0. Your teammates are at bat first, and they reach first and second. Hilario, for some reason, I've got you next. What do you do?

"How many outs?"

Zero.

"I bunt."

What now?

"I bunt, you heard me."

Fu- off to the bunt page it is, then. Why can't you just hit?

"I'm a pitcher! I can't hit for shit. I'm bunting."

Right. Thanks for making me look up one of the more frustrating rules of this book.

"What's the even worse rules?"

Tagging up, adds loads of extra dice just to know if you make it back, and more dice to check if your character realises there is or isn't enough time to attempt to run again. That's on there. All kinds of errors, too. Errors just add die after die. Anyway, you bunt. Let's see, what's your contact hitting and vision?

"I've got nothing in contact hitting, but my hitting general is 1. Vision same thing."

Wow, those are some stats to back up your bunting...

"So does it work?"

Roll, please...

"16"

I don't know how, but it works. Runners advance to second and third, you're out. Uchidame is up next.

"I'm going to hit a home run."

Power hitting?

"Four, with another two in hitting general."

See, that's more like it. Roll please?

"19, hell yeah"

The pitcher sees you're going for a big hit. He throws a slider and you swing at nothing, 0-1 the count.

"Home run time... 6 this time."

Same thing, 0-2 now.

"Home run time... that's a 15."

What's your luck skill?

"Three."

You shouldn't be rewarded for this, but it's a hit. Between right and centre field, first runner home... and a couple more rolls... second runner comes home too. You advance to... what's your baserunning, and a roll?

"Baserunning is four, roll... 9."

You make it to first base. The score is 5-2... and time to sim through the next couple at-bats. Oh! The game is starting, it's time for the anthems. Newmanistan versus us, after going 3-1 against them in the Casaran stage I'm seriously wondering if our first seed status goes challenged. And of course it does. 3-2 series win?

"3-2 series loss, I'd say"

"Yeah, I'm going with a 3-2 series loss."

Same Old Base Corps

SAME OLD BASE CORPS
Written By: Cole Ford and Steven Craig

Well, I can't say I didn't expect it. Let's be honest, the Base Corps' season is over. We barely managed to take a single game from The Greater Nordics, and got blown out in the other game. Soon enough we'll be suffering two straight losses and getting knocked right back out of the playoffs like every season! Can you say that you expected anything else? Coming back from the dead in the middle of the Casaran stage was one thing, but we had plenty of space for error. A couple losses in a row is no big deal since you can balance them out later. But in the playoffs, a couple losses can basically sink you for good.

So let's examine the damage. Can we possibly take this series, or are we doomed to repeat ourselves like we so often do?

THE GREATER NORDICS, GAME ONE
With ample time to rest, manager Blanton Evergreen had all his options available to set the pitching rotation. In a little unorthodox decision, he decided to place Andrew Tyler as the starting pitcher for Game 1, essentially offsetting the pitching rotation by one spot. When asked about this decision, Evergreen claimed it was because Tyler is a good option as a mop-up long-term relief pitcher, and wanted that to be possible later in the series if necessary. Okay ... sure.

In any case, this decision could be seen as a potentially sinking one. Tyler put together a solid first three innings, but a 3-run shot by Ester Isaksson instantly put the pressure on the Corps. They couldn't answer in the bottom of the fourth, and Tyler's pitching started to falter. The Greater Nordics' swing-for-the-fences attitude took over. Tyler only let up one run each the next two innings, and the Corps even managed to score one in answer thanks to an RBI double by Fields. Unfortunately, by the top of the 7th, it was far too late. Already down 5-1, Tyler loaded up the bases before being taken out for Danny Jefferson.

Predictably, Josefine Kron took Jefferson's second pitch deep, nearly doubling the score to 9-1 on the grand slam. The bleeding didn't stop either, with Soren Vang scoring off of a single over the head of the third baseman by Ludde Knutsen. A two-run shot by Abram Kavana in the bottom of the 7th brought the score to the fabled 10-3, but instead of making a miraculous comeback, Jefferson gave up another two runs in the top of the 8th to essentially declare the game dead. The 12-3 scoreline remained for the next 3 frames, and Drawkland had lost Game 1 in pitiful fashion.

THE GREATER NORDICS, GAME TWO
The humiliation of Game 1 was now behind the Base Corps, but the remainder of the series seemed to be a daunting task. After taking such a whipping in Game 1, how can you expect to turn around the next day and perform? Luckily, this game would start with the ace Leo Roy on the mound. One could wonder how Game 1 would've gone differently if he had started instead, considering his performance in this game, but I digress.

Saara Omdahl, a WBC rookie, was the starter for the Nordics, and she absolutely proved her worth on the mound. This game turned into a pitcher's duel, with both Roy and Omdahl taking advantage of the gassed lineups from the previous game. Strikeouts were at a surplus, and the bats were nearly silent. As each inning passed, the tension ramped up, as everybody in attendance was expecting a breakthrough at any moment. Both Drawkland and The Greater Nordics are known for their aggressive and potent offenses, so it felt like a massive homerun was just a swing away. Neither pitcher was willing to give it up, however.

Both Roy and Omdahl were dealing clean sheets and throwing relatively few pitches. Neither managed to keep a no-hitter through the 6th inning, but both managers decided to keep the starters on the mound. The game approached the ninth with no action, and tension in the stadium was at an all-time high. The Greater Nordics had the the advantage of being the designated home team, so a walkoff was easily possibly. Roy refused to go down without a fight though. The game was at its closest to ending in the bottom of the 11th. The Greater Nordics got two runners in scoring position with only one out, and it was expected that they'd pop a base hit to finish the game off. Evergreen came out to the mound to talk with Roy and likely replace him, but he begged to be kept in the game, so Evergreen obliged.

Evergreen's trust paid off, as Roy took down both the next two batters swinging. The inning ended with no damage, giving the Base Corps new life and purpose. Roy was still dealing, but he couldn't hang on much longer, and neither could the rest of the team. It was time to put the game to rest. Luckily, going into the top of the 12th, the Base Corps was almost at the top of the lineup. Leo Roy himself had to lead off, at the bottom of the lineup. He managed to poke one over the first baseman's head for a single. Abram Kavana swung for the fences at his at-bat, but fell short, leading to out one and keeping Roy on base. Roger Madison's at-bat went considerably better, as he knocked Omdahl's full count offering into shallow right-center.

Roy was held on second with Madison easily making first, putting Taylor Smart up to bat. Unfortunately, Tay's swipe at the first pitch also fell short of the wall, but it allowed Roy to tag up and advance to third. This left two men on base with 2 outs in the top of the 12th. Then came up Lane Kavana, the primary power hitter for the Corps. Normally Omdahl would've been retired at this point, but she's managed to strike out Kavana in all his at-bats thus far. It was only logical she would be the hero again, right?

Unfortunately for the Nordics, this was not the case. Lane took the 4th pitch, a fastball high and inside, and turned on it. Before the ball had even reached the apex in its flight, Kavana was hollering and jumping down the base path. Roy and Madison followed suit, sprinting around the base paths while throwing their fists in the air. The ball finally fell into the second deck of the park, and Drawkland had rocketed to a 3-0 lead in extra innings. Ford was retired in his at-bat, and it was time for the Nordics' last-ditch effort.

Finally, Roy was retired from the game, and Franklin Bell came in to close it out. Two fly outs and a strikeout swinging later, Drawkland had managed to steal away Game 2 from The Greater Nordics. Despite the lopsided scoreline of Game 1, the teams are now on even terms.

PACK YOUR BAGS
Still, let's look at the facts. We got absolutely blasted in Game 1, and managed to scrape by in Game 2 because our ace pitcher was starting. The late-game heroics are great and all, but we really need to find our offense. We simply cannot outplay a team like the Nordics if we can't score runs. Exciting things are happening in these playoffs already, what with title favorites Banija already facing elimination, and some lower seeds getting solid wins.

This series against The Greater Nordics will really be our greatest challenge yet. At the start of this Classic, the Nordics were ranked #17 to our #20. They weren't expected to make a deep playoff run either. Both of us have nothing to lose and everything to gain, and we're all on even footing. All the bracket advantages in the world won't make a lick of difference if we fail to make it out of the first round ... again. All we can ask for is the Base Corps to find something they've never had before. We can all remember how we faced easy elimination to Scootalove City in WBC 41, managed to fight back in two straight elimination games to force a Game 5, and make it all the way to the bottom of the 9th with a seven-run lead ... only to disintegrate and lose to a walkoff grand slam, 10-12.

We've said it before, but if there's anything that sums up the Base Corps' history, that is it. And I hesitate to say it, but I'm sure we'll be treated to such spectacular failure in this WBC, the first one back in the playoffs in ages. Please prove me wrong, you bastards. On Corps.

THE ROCKET REPORT

WE’RE STILL PLAYING

by Brianne Henry,

Fans of the Rockets have loyally attended the games through a rather lackluster first stage, but it was still enough to see them get through to the playoffs. Those are the die-hards. They made the trip to Free Republics and are loudly rooted on our team against Ko-oren. We’re imagining that they have brought signs that talk about getting revenge and all that for World Baseball Classic 45. All the more power to them. So, why has the World Baseball Classic fallen flat in Newmanistan this year? Here are some theories:

1) Fans are spoiled, and are thinking about other sports. And we miss Schiltzberg and Super-Llamaland.

– Newmanistan’s success in the World Baseball Classic is well known. One of the biggest motivating factors for us to return was when we saw that Schiltzberg had equaled us in titles. Super-Llamaland had three, and would get to four themselves. We had a nice back and forth with Super-Llamaland in exchanging fifth titles before we captured number six. Super-Llamaland no longer competes, and after the last Classic, Schiltzberg also packed it in. This really leaves just Cassadaigua as anywhere near us, but even they only have half the titles that we have.

My friend was telling me about this computer game that exists where one creates a fictional country and then can create pretend stories about sporting competitions. The game has a lot of excellent storytellers, especially with sports, but the most fun story rivalries come with those who have accomplishments similar to theirs. You want to beat them, but deep down you enjoy the competition with them. Without them participating, the drive to win the competition just is not the same, my friend told me.

Our players are still trying hard and playing hard, and like I said, the die-hards are still attending the games, but like my friend with the fictional country game, if you don’t feel like you have much to prove, you might lean to other sports. My friend said that is what is happening with them.

2) The Casaran. Don’t like it.

I couldn’t get excited about the Casaran system. I have to admit I like the structure of the normal group stage.

That is me, and that is the Rocket Report. Maybe our Classic ends soon, and maybe it continues. I hope for our players, that it continues. They have plenty of national pedigree to proudly represent.

Banijans claw back against A Mushroom Kingdom with late game heroics to force a winner-take-all Game 5 in Orlandiana

Banijans celebrate Yakuba Kah's go-ahead home run in 8th inning of Game 4

EAST POINT, ORLANDIANA, FREE REPUBLICS- Baseball is a beautiful sport. It is a very unique game, of course, and one of the beautiful, and unique, things about this sport is the many ways that it can bring chaos. Look at this World Baseball Classic, for example. The top two seeds, who both powered through the Casaran stages looking like championship contenders, are fighting for their lives in Game 5. Both teams have been on the brink of elimination, with Ko-oren dominating Game 4, after being down two games to one, and Banija launching a furious comeback in this series after being down two games to none to the 15th seeded, unranked A Mushroom Kingdom. One of the great things about baseball, that differentiates it from other sports, is how baseball's managers, in the playoffs, especially when facing elimination, coach as if their hair is on fire. What other sport do you see this happen? In football and basketball, as you get closer and closer to the title bout, coaches can get more risk averse. But playoff baseball? You throw out all kinds of crazy combinations, do things that you haven't done in the regular season, all kinds of tricks up your sleeve. And while Ousman Kakay has generally avoided being that kind of practitioner, falling behind 2 games to zero has forced him to be against A Mushroom Kingdom, to help his team stay alive. What has he come up with?

Well, with the Banijan bullpen logging 8 and 1/3 innings in Game 2, he would need some serious innings from his starter, Duta Condé. And Condé gave him innings. Now, he started shakily. He allowed a single and a walk in the first inning, though he got out of the jam without allowing any runs. But yet, when Troy Shellowitzski led off the 2nd inning, he sent the ball 450 feet to the left fields bleachers here at General Milani Park. They were up 1-0, early. This, of course, was disastrous for the Banijans. Could they come out, after going 23-9 during the Casaran stages and earning the #2 overall seed for the knockout stages, be swept by these newcomers? Fortunately, the game was far from over. Duta Condé got an early visit to the pitcher's mound from the pitching coach, and then, calmed down. He retired the next 12 batters that he faced, en route to pitch 7 and 1/3 strong innings of one run ball, allowing 3 hits and 3 walks throughout the ballgame. While a shaky start, the young pitcher stepped up on the mound, and came through for the Banijans in our hour of need. We needed a strong start from our starter, and a long run, to rest those arms that had been overworked in Game 2, and that's exactly what we got. No complaints from anybody.

Of course, that meant the Banijans would have to try and get to A Mushroom Kingdom's starting pitcher, Gregory Goombalowski. In the 3rd inning, it would be the #9 hitter, Xaaf Geele, who would start a rally. A leadoff single to the inning for Geele brought up Assan Mansaré. He had a deep flyout to right field, forcing A Mushroom Kingdom's right fielder to dive. Geele, making a great baserunning decision, tagged up to second base, and because the right fielder had to take the extra half second to stand up and throw the ball, it was a poor throw from the outfield, off line to the bag. Putting pressure on the defense, forcing them to make a mistake, getting that base. Again, managing like your hair is on fire. With a runner in scoring position, Duwa Sohna came up to bat. Unfortunately, he struck out, bringing up Sillah. Jonkong Sillah hit a ball into the gap, and doubled, bringing Geele home. The score was 1-1. Even though Kah and Kandeh both got out, via a strikeout and a pop up, the game was still tied. Banija was not done yet. When the bottom of the fourth started, Lama Ouattara came up to the plate, and stepped up big time. The Designated Hitter, in the bottom of the fourth, got a hanging curve ball, and absolutely crushed it. 420 feet to straight away center field, easily clearing the wall, to give the Banijans a 2-1 lead in Game 3.

He came into the dugout, receiving high fives. And then, of course, it settled into a pitcher's duel. Duta Condé and Gregory Goombalowski, generally going pitch for pitch. Duta Condé hadn't allowed a baserunner since the second inning home run- though with nobody out in the 6th, he allowed his third hit of the game, a single just over the head of Yakuba Kah. However, Ousman Kakay trusted his starting pitcher, and left him in. Duta Condé pitched himself out of trouble, forcing a 4-6-3 double play to get the tying runs off of the basepaths. And although he allowed a 2 out walk in the 7th inning after striking out the first two batters, Ousman Kakay once again trusted his starting pitcher, and once again, Duta Condé got himself out of a jam by forcing a pop-up. So it was 2-1, entering the bottom of the 7th. Goombalowski was taken out of the game at this time, and replaced by Marco Chiquita. This was a mistake. The Banijans rallied against Chiquita, loading the bases, though getting two outs in the process, to see Xaaf Geele go up to the plate. Jabril Saidykhan was brought on to pinch hit for Banija's #9 hitter, and it was a stroke of genius. Jabril Saidykhan hit a pinch hit grand slam, and that buried Banija's opponents. Duta Condé was brought in to finish the 8th, though a one out walk saw him finally get the pull from his manager. The setup man, Foday Kandeh, finished the 8th inning, while Demba Baturu pitched the 9th. Not a save situation, of course, so they saved their closer.

That lead us into Game 4. The Banijan bullpen, mostly rested with just two pitcher pitching the previous day, would be on high alert on this day. The Banijans got off to a strong start, scoring runs in each of the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead, and continue their momentum earned from fighting off elimination on the previous day. However, A Mushroom Kingdom clawed back. They scored a run in the 4th inning, via a solo home run. Suntukung Kandeh loading the bases in the 5th, with only one out, saw Banija's starting pitcher for the day get yanked, after only 4 and 1/3 innings. Jebel Darboe came into the game, and a flyout saw the first runner come home via a sacrifice fly. He struck out the next batter to end the inning, limiting the damage. But A Mushroom Kingdom would come back in the 6th inning, and continue to inflict more damage. A leadoff double allowed by Darboe saw the middle reliever get pulled, and Foday Kandeh come into the game. Kakay was going to do whatever he could to get his team back into the game. Unfortunately, some small ball saw that hitter bunted to third base, and then Kandeh issued an intentional walk, to try and force a double play. He got the pitch he wanted, as the ball went to the second baseman, Jibril Mansaré. However, came to him on a short hop, and he could not handle it. Everybody was safe, and the run scored. The game was now tied at 3. Kandeh got the next two batters to pop up, so once again, the damage was limited, but Banija had now blown a 3-0 lead.

In the 7th inning, is where things got dicey. Kandeh issued a four pitch walk to leadoff the inning, and he was immediately pulled, for Gibril Sowe. Sowe was having some trouble himself. A Mushroom Kingdom was slowly clawing their way into this game, outfighting and outworking the Banijans, and this was not what anybody wanted to see. Sowe issued a walk to the next batter, and then, a RBI single, as the runner scored from second base without a throw. Banija's bullpen was disintegrating right in front of Ousman Kakay, and although they were up 3-0 early, they were now down, 4-3, with men on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Who could stop the bleeding for Banija? After Ousman Kakay conferenced with Sowe, and brought in long reliever Tairu Sesay. But Sesay came in, and was wild with his own control. He came on, and immediately issued a four pitch walk, and it seemed as if the writing was on the wall. What could Kakay do? They were about to give up a massive inning, and slam the door of their hopes. Then, he did what any desperate manager would do in this situation- bring on his best starter.

Assan Condé, who wasn't even supposed to be available for today, as he was going to be saved to start Game 5, came out of the bullpen and onto the mound, with simple instructions- stop the bleeding, and give the Banijan bats a fighting chance over the next 6 outs. Of course, much easier said than done. And Assan Condé had the pitching performance of his career. Coming on in this high leverage, in a situation he wasn't used to as a top end starter, what was he going to do? Well, the best pitchers adapt to their circumstances, and he showed why he's considered one of the best in this half-inning. He absolutely needed to get the first guy out, and he came out, throwing strikes. Assan Condé got the leadoff hitter to strike out, and then the middle of the Banijan infield was able to play at double play depth, rather than in. Assan Condé then forced the next batter to hit a hard ground ball towards Lalo Diene, the third baseman. Diene, playing smart, as he and Kah were playing in even though the middle infielders were at double play depth, went home with the ball, and got the forceout at the plate for the second out. The next batter worked a full count, but on the payoff pitch, Assan Condé painted the corner with a brilliant curveball, painting the outside corner for strike three, looking. The batter, expecting a fastball, was frozen.

Assan Condé had brilliantly pitched his way out of a terrible jam. But of course, the Banijans were still down 1. A Mushroom Kingdom put one of their relievers, Doby Dinoback, onto the mound to pitch the decisive innings in this series. They were 6 outs away from upsetting the reigning bronze medalists and storming their way into the quarterfinals. However, Banijan bats had other ideas. Duwa Sohna, naturally, was the first one to bat. He hit a leadoff double, putting a runner in scoring position, and the go-ahead run at the plate. However, Jonkong Sillah could not send home the run, striking out. IT would be Yakuba Kah, the cleanup hitter, who would look to be the hero on the night. He got a fastball that got a little too much of the plate, and the lefty got all of it. 415 feet down the right field line, it was a towering home run, that would give the Banijans the 5-4 lead, and cause great celebrations, and a great sigh of relief, to those wearing orange.

It turned out to be the last hit of the game for either side. Assan Condé, Banija's ace, pitched both the 8th and the 9th innings, as he went 1-2-3 in both of them. A clutch performance by the starter- 3 perfect innings in relief, getting the win, getting his way out of a bases loaded jam with nobody out- a brilliant performance, one that, if the Banijans are able to triumph in Game 5, will go down in Banijan baseball lore. Ousman Kakay talked about his decision to bring in Assan Condé after the game. "Assan Condé is a true warrior, he loves the game, he loves competing, and in a situation like this, we need to have our pitchers available. Assan Condé was available to pitch, and instead of saving him for a future that looked like it might never arrive in the form of Game 5, putting him on was our best chance of stopping the bleeding and giving ourselves a chance in the next inning. HE came in and slammed the door, and since he could no longer start Game 5, it made sense to ride him the rest of the way." Players gave lots of plaudits to the clutch relief performance for Assan Condé, as they said they needed to turn around and get ready for Game 5.

Of course, with the struggles of the middle of the Banijan bullpen in Game 4, it will be interesting to see how Game 5 plays out. Banta Jawara will start Game 5 on normal rest, as Assan Condé has already pitched. Now, of course, Banija's two best relievers did not pitch Game 4- setup man Sarjo Touré, and closer Demba Baturu. With neither pitching in Game 4, and the off day between Games 4 and 5, it is certainly possible that both could be called upon to pitch multiple innings, if Kakay does not have trust in his middle relievers. Of course, Jawara will be looking for a bounceback game himself, after getting dominated in Game 2 of this series. "I thank Ousman for the faith that he has shown in me." Jawara told us. "Game 2 was terrible, but I am better than that, and I believe that I can go out and help my team in this important game. I expect to give a better performance than I did in Game 2, though I understand that in a win-or-go-home game, the leash will be short. I hope to reward Ousman's faith." The rumor is, that his preferred pitchers to use in this game would be Jawara logging four or five innings, Ensa Suso logging one or two, and then having Sarjo Touré and Demba Baturu getting the last 8 or 9 outs. Assan Condé, of course, would want to be saved for Game 1 of the next series, but there is no ruling out bringing him out of the bullpen again, either. What would that do to the state of the Banijan rotation going forward, if he has to pitch again? We're not sure. But if the Banijans do not win tonight, there is no tomorrow they need to be concerned with, so they'll do whatever it takes to get 27 outs in this do-or-die Game 5, potential pitching rotation for the quarterfinals be damned.

Can they win Game 5? They certainly won't if Banta Jawara allows 5 runs in the 1st inning, like last time. But that seemed like a blip. Jawara has been excellent throughout this Classic, and although the pressure is on, he typically responds well to the pressure. There are no predictions to be made here- but expect both managers to pull out all the stops. Jawara is going to have a short leash, as is every pitcher. It's a Game 5- the entire bullpen is going to be available. Both Assan and Duta Condé will be available to pitch, though they will only pitch, of course, if the situation is 'in case of emergency, break glass.' But the Banijans have the talent, and the momentum, and they should have the confidence, after gutting out tough wins in Games 3 and 4 to even force a Game 5. We don't know if they'll win- but if the rest of the series is any indicator, it will surely be close, it will be intense, and it will be entertaining, as Ousman Kakay tries to find his pathway to 27 outs and a second consecutive berth in the quarterfinals, and prevent A Mushroom Kingdom from crashing that party in Banija's place.
