Defiance 1936 - FCN Roleplay
A storm is coming. Nobody knows when it'll finally hit, but every world leader is well aware that it's coming. The War to End all Wars was to no avail - Hopes of lasting peace have been crushed as fascist and communist governments rise to power and exert their influence, while imperialism doesn't seem like it's going away anytime soon. Military build-up is happening in nearly every country, while the treaties signed in the aftermath of the Great War seem to be crumbling. Will the world once more be engulfed in global conflict, or will the leaders of the world come together to prevent such a situation?

The Second Polish Republic: An independent state carved out of the Russian and German Empires in the aftermath the Great War and during the Russian Civil War. Shortly after the independence of Poland, the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921 broke out, with chaos breaking out in the nation's east, in which Polish forces defeated the reds decisively in the Battle of Warsaw, securing the Polish state's independence for the next decade and expanding Poland's borders exponentially. Poland also annexed a sizeable swath of Lithuania in the 1919-1920 Polish-Lithuanian war. Prominent politician and military leader Józef Piłsudski launched a coup in 1926, beginning a trend that would see Poland grow more authoritarian and centralized as the years passed. The Great Depression decimated the Polish state, encouraging further centralization as incomes of the working class dropped by almost as much as 50% in some instances (Over half of workers worked in agriculture or on farms). In the 1930's, the largely backwards Polish military began developing and producing various tank and rifle models to a limited extent in a minor campaign to reorganize the Armed Forces, though the Polish army was hardly motorized or armored except for few brigades.

In terms of foreign relations, the Polish state was largely isolated, being situated between the authoritarian Germans in the east and the Russian Republic and having isolated itself through a series of diplomatic blunders. Poland did enjoy friendly relationships with the French, though in the south they were fed up with the Czechs due to border disputes, in the midst of a trade war with the Germans to the west, and experiencing general distrust among the population with the Russians in the east. Józef Beck, the Foreign Minister, was largely disliked and distrusted by other governments, leading many to refuse cooperation with him and preventing a defrosting of Polish relations with other nations, One of his end-term goals was to establish the Międzymorze, a pact between the seas composed of Eastern European nations and designed to protect against the Russians and the Germans.

As of 1936, Poland is officially led by PM Marian Zyndram-Kościałkowski - He has largely been inefficient in solving anything, though. Large portions of the Polish army are situated on or near the German and Soviet borders, with military presence in the central of the country having the goal of preventing unrest or insurgency.

The Democratic Republic Of The South Carribean (call it DRSC in rp) had recently formed after the great war, after gaining independence from the European powers in there at the time.

Alexi Valtero, a political leader who put the department of military over all other departments, had just been elected as the head of the government in preperation for the storm, is making his first speech on 3rd January 1936.

Alexi:People of DRSC, we need to prepare for the coming war. We all know it will come, and we need to be as ready as possible. So, we are expanding the military, adding more vehicles and need 36,980 more soldiers. Anybody who would like to become one can apply at Plymouth(capital in nation, irl capital of Montserrat) or any other major city in our archipelago. That is all. Thank you for listening.

There was some controversy about this speech on radio, but it was mostly accepted. Four days passed, and Alexi had achieved his goals, and expanded the navy as well.

Following the events of WW1 the Spainards looked all around war torn Europe tired and hungry they turned to a new up and coming leader from the slums of Barcelona who had been inspired by the work of Karl Marx and had heard of a new form of government gaining traction at the general election of 1920 Correa was elected into the Congress of Deputies where he truly thrived his socialist party called for Iberian unity and a cancellation of all private debt quickly winning over the support of the millions of impoverished Spaniards although Correa was a rather non-violent man an attempt on his life in 1923 led him believe the only way to achieve his goals was through military conquest since his communist party had the majority in the Congress of Deputies Correa was able to pass targeted legislation to get many of his political opponents arrested after which he turned his sights to Portugal after a 5 year conflict the Spainish annexed Portugal and created the Iberian Socialist States shortly after the annexation of Portugal Correa abolished the Congress of Deputies and declared himself Commandant of the Iberian Socialist States.

The Iberian Socialist States have spent most of their time stifling minor rebellions and imprisoning the enemies of Commandant Correa so they have no real enemies or allies. reports of communist uprisings have reached Correa’s desk on several occasions and he’s interested in assisting him comrades abroad. When asked about his plans for the ISS Correa said: “I intend to stabilize our economy and the homeland and then look to our Southern border”

The Iberian Army is divided into two main forces with most of the northern forces stationed in or around Pamplona the southern forces are stationed (with most of the navy) at the Strait of Gibraltar

After the Great War, the British military was downsized by a significant amount. The branch that suffered the most was the Royal Navy which was down to 140 ships. The only navies comparable in size is the Japanese Navy and the U.S Navy. The recent naval treaties limit the size of what the UK can build. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin asks Parliament to repeal the treaties due to the German threat. Parliament votes for the repeal and a substantial increase in the military budget which pleases the Prime Minister as the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force are the only thing protecting the UK from invasion. Prime Minister Baldwin also help establish the Allies with the UK and the Commonwealth as the only members. He sends an invitation to every democratic nation on the planet asking themif they want to join the Allies.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
1 January 1936

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR, was now a fully industrialized powerhouse built from the ashes of the former Russian Empire, which collapsed into unrest and civil war nearly two decades earlier. The Communist Party of the Soviet Union, lead its the founder and former chairman Vladimir Lenin, won the war after close to six years of fighting. Lenin died not long after, leaving the commander of the Red Army, Leon Trotsky, in charge of the country. He had a brief power struggle with the Party secretary Joseph Stalin, but managed to get rid of him and his supporters. Trotsky and his cabinet often joked about Stalin afterwards. They said he was so incompetent, he would probably cause a famine in the most agriculturally rich regions in the country, and it would be so bad that the country would be mocked for years afterwards for being unable to feed its people. They also talked about how paranoid he was, to the point that he would purge all capable government and military members from office no matter how loyal they were to him.

Being a military leader, Trotsky focused much of his effort on the Red Army. The entire military was reorganized from the ineffective force that lost a war against Poland over a decade ago. The army was now equipped with modern weaponry, and lead by competent officers. The air force had modern fighters and bombers, and is positioned on airfields across the country. The navy had many ships spread across the USSR ports, but also had modern battleships and aircraft carriers. With its equipment and practically endless amount of manpower, the USSR could deal with any threat that came its way. But despite its large military, the network of spies was a greater asset. The USSR has several communist allies across the world, most notably France and Iberia in Europe. In other countries, communist agents have been planted and are helping to organize worldwide revolutions. To secure a state for the workers, Trotsky and his government knew that they must all oppressed workers of the world to rise up against their masters.

The Era of the Monarchy

The Iranians were dissatisfied with their position in the world. For years, Iran had been in the midst of a great tug-of-war between the United Kingdom and Russia, both of whom sought to extract profit from Iran and gain influence over it because of its strategic position.

Reza Shah Pahlavi, the Shahanshah of Iran, recognized this and created a foreign policy to counter foreign interference. He pitted the UK and Russia against each other so neither of them could manipulate Iran and he interacted with countries, such as Germany, that were against the UK and Russia and did not seek to control Iran in order to reduce British and Russian influence.

The Iranians, however, were dissatisfied with Pahlavi, too. His government became an autocracy and he began suppressing non-Persian cultures so he could use Persian culture to unite the country. Angered by both the Iranian monarchy and by foreign powers, the Iranian people took the matter into their own hands.

January 1, 1936

On this day, leftist nationalist republicans led by Abbas Aryanpour, a man from Isfahan, engaged in a bloody battle in Tehran against the pro-Pahlavi Iranian military. Despite heavy losses, the republicans eventually won, deposed Pahlavi, and established a republican government with Aryanpour as President.

This government, similarly to Pahlavi, sought to prevent foreign encroachment onto Iran and wanted a powerful Iran. However, Aryanpour believed in civic nationalism rather than ethnic nationalism and he did not want to Westernize the country like Pahlavi did.

President Aryanpour declared in a public address the dismantlement of the monarchy and the establishment of the State of Iran, a new republic. He asked that countries around the world recognize the republican government as the legitimate one.

Years after World War I, The Kingdom Of Italy's economy has been struggling to keep itself afloat, along with the social turmoil spawning from fear of communists. This led to a counter-revolution and established fascism in the country led by Benito Mussolini.

Benito Mussolini has been gaining great recognition throughout the country, being appointed by King Victor Emmanuel III after the March on Rome. What was once a constitutional monarchy was shifted to be more fascist and one-party, which Mussolini populized, his influence has continued to impact the country as seen from their ongoing invasion of Ethiopia, as well as the related focus towards military strength. Through propaganda and paranoia Mussolini encourages the people to stay in the state, to not question any of his policies, and started spying on them. He was also attempting to work on the current economic depression, developing a system where the state has the power to direct production and allocation of resources. He banned unions, taxed single men, and modernized farming as well.

As of January 1st, Italy is still in the process of invading Ethiopia and suffering from an economic depression.

As the new year dawns on the rolling mountains of Switzerland, people awake into a state that has not seen war in 121 years, not since Napoleon tried to conquer Europe have the Swiss entered a war. But times have changed since the Congress of Vienna declared Swiss neutrality and the threat of total European war once more rises, the Swiss were lucky enough to sit out of the last war, but with the rise of communism in France, Spain and Russian and the rise of fascism in Italy, Germany and other states in Europe, it seems war is all but inevitably. But this shall not stop the Swiss Spirit, nor will it stop the Swiss nation in its business. If Switzerland can stand for over six hundred years, it can stand for six hundred more!

1st January

With the recent events in Iran unfolding, the president of the Federal council, Albert Meyer, has announced that whilst they will not recognise the current Iranian government intill a peaceful election has been held, but would not refuse any business or halt any official diplomatic ties with Iran.

The Swiss government later that day declined the British governments invitation into the allies, saying that is was a clear move against world peace that would only lead to further escalation and conflict.

In Sport news the Swiss team continues to train for the upcoming winter Olympics, the winter Olympics, where Switzerland traditional enters, only managed to gain one medal last year, and the team hopes to improve on last year’s performance.

Disturbed by the growing Communist and Fascist threat in Continental Europe, Stanley Baldwin calls for new elections. With the elections, the Conservative Party win a majority in the House of Commons and choose Winston Churchill as the new Prime Minister of the UK. From day one, Winston Churchill initiated several economic programs to get the UK back on its feet economically. He also started expanding the Army, Navy, and Air Force by increasing the military budget. All this was being done becase Winston knew another world war was on the horizon. He would be sure to keep an eye on Germany, France, Russia,Italy, and Japan as he knew they would be the ones to start WW2. One of the reports on his desk in his office at 10 Downing Street tells him that Italy is invading Ethiopia. Winston orders his Defence Minister to begin supplying the Ethiopians with arms to help fight off the Italians.

Foreign Minister Józef Beck is removed by President Ignacy Mościcki from his position by in a bid to improve relations with other European nations in January 5 This quickly leads to dissent among Prime Minister Marian Zyndram-Kościałkowski and likeminded factions in the Sejm, and by the 8th Józef has been sent to the prison of Bereza Kartuska for posing a threat to the regime under the April 1935 Constitution. Debating and speculation over the new Foreign Minister broke out in the Sejm as supporters of President Ignacy vied for the position over the following days, though it was speculated that the President met with Professor and ex-Sejm member Stanisław Grabski.

Meanwhile, training in the Polish military continued regularly as the polish attempted to recruit four more divisions into the Army by Summer of 1936, which would bring personnel in the Army up from 320,000 to 360,000. One of these divisions, which would become the 5th Armored Division, would be the first specifically armored division in the Polish army in its history - It was to integrate three dozen brand-new 7TP tanks and two dozen Vickers 6-tonners, as well as two dozen TK-3 tankettes, of which nearly two hundred had already been produced. Combat studies were currently ongoing at the request of President Ignacy's command on whether the TK-3 tankettes were feasible in combat against German or Soviet tank designs. These studies were currently conclusive that they indeed would not match well against heavier armed tanks with their 7.92 mm machinegun armament, though they would still be feasibly used for reconnaissance missions. This study also concluded that more 7TP tanks should be produced and used in the future, though current economic downturn prevented any orders or extensive reform from taking place.

America was just coming out of The Great Depression. Before that had been a Great War...so many greats in such a short time, so many horrible greats. The two greats had shaken America to the ground, though the war had been won and peace settled and the economic crisis was now waining, it semed that this generation had experianced many tragedies, enough tragedy for a life-time.

Seeing the current unrest in Iran and Italy unnerved everyone in the U.S. government. At the same time many communist regimes were being created and getting stronger. They eyed Russia nervously, but at this point were determined to keep the peace. Perhaps we should join an alliance, thought Roosevelt, but surely if we did it'd start another World War 1 situation. Maybe sanctions would be appropriate? But right now no American wants to get involved in anything internation with our own domestic problems. Everyone's still reeling from the Great Depression, Americans are trying to get back on their feet. We'll simply sit and watch, for now.

Wilhelm Gustloff Himself worked for the Swiss government as a meteorologist, then joined the NSDAP in 1929, he then put much effort into the distribution of the book “ The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” , a Russian book about a “Jewish plan for world domination” He, and along with the NSDAP/AO, was sued for libel for this by the Swiss Jewish community. The Swiss government has announced that with Germany’s permission, they would transport his body back to Germany for his funeral. They have also confirmed that the assassin in question will be tried as a criminal in Switzerland. The Northern American States was horrified by the news as soon as the media broke the story. Some are saying Wilhem Gustloff deserved what he got, while others say the young jewish man was at fault. But through-out the country it was seen as something that would escalate tensions in Europe, putting everyone on edge. The white house has so far been silent on the many situations in Europe.

4th February
Adolf Hitler sits in his office in Berlin as he receives the message from Schutzstaffel Heinrich Himmler. He informs him of the assassination. Hitler says his condolences and says he will contact the Swiss immediately. He waves Himmler off and Hitler calls the Swiss Government. He explains that he is terribly sorry for the loss of Gustloff and agrees to the transportation of his body. After the call ends he gets up and looks out his window to see all the people walking outside and doing their daily works. Shortly after he sits back down and continues his work.

After the call from the Swiss Government Hitler gets notified of this and contacts Mussolini. He says that he will not aid Italy or anybody in conflict as of yet. He also says that he does not want to start a war with Britain and her allies. So Hitler for the time being declines this offer.

4th February.
Meanwhile on the border of Bavaria the 3rd Infantry Division or also known as Wehrgauleitung Frankfurt is doing a training drill with 2000 soldiers doing Rifle training, Anti Tank drills, and many more. The general overlooking the drill is Generalmajor Walter Petzel. This drill goes on for the whole day with excellent and not so excellent scores and results.

Roughly a week before this date, President Ignacy Mościcki has appointed Stanisław Grabski to the position of Foreign Minister - This has, however, sparked significant outrage and discourse among the Polish deep state and factions affiliated with Józef Beck, now imprisoned. Several guards within the prison, unbeknownst to Mościcki, have been engaging in providing Józef with various luxuries and privileges within the jail, as well as allowing him to communicate with his allies in the government. Other guards, pissed off by this, have attempted to inform their higher-ups of this corruption, but to no avail - For they themselves are participating in it.

On January the 30th, President Mościcki met with Prime Minister Marian Zyndram-Kościałkowski, bringing him to his office and then reportedly asking him "What is your involvement int his whole ordeal with Beck?" Zyndram-Kościałkowski responded, "It was not your place to remove him. You'll regret doing so soon, I'm afraid to inform you." before leaving. On top of this division ongoing within the highest levels of the Polish government, rumor's that several prominent socialist and communist organizations are plotting mass demonstrations against the government, to take place in several weeks. The government and police, in response to this knowledge, have secretly sent several agents to infiltrate these organizations for the upcoming demonstrations.

February 5, 1936
With the Polish state now having a filled Foreign Minister position, it was time to mend relations with other European nations. Minister Stanisław Grabski wrote a communique to the nations of Great Britain and Bavaria, stating:

Greetings, friends! It is indeed troubling that ideologies such as communism and fascism are only on the rise in Europe, and their exponential military growth and disregard of the Treaty of Versailles is frightening. I offer the friendship of the Polish people towards your nations, and I seek further cooperation and strengthening of relations among the neutral, moderate nations of Europe. I also want to apologize for our last Foreign Minister's behavior and stances towards your nations, Mr. Beck.
