Homosexuality in Shalotte has never been considered to be a taboo or controversial subject, to the extent that marriages conducted by the Draéryn (which are nearly all of them) make no distinction between the two, and the Gaeltyn recognises no difference between them nor collects statistics about them.

Far from being ostracised, homosexual Shalottes have historically been free to go about their affairs as easily and casually as heterosexuals. Homosexual couples in Shalotte are historically more likely to adopt adopt orphaned children - a phenomenon that was (and sometimes still is) fairly common in the difficult living conditions of the islands - in lieu of having their own biological children, which to community-minded Shalottes is considered honourable.

The only 'issue' homosexual couples face if they decide to marry is when it comes to clan names and lineage - in Shalotte, clan lineage is traditionally determined matrilineally, and is somewhat more formal than the 'surname' concept in use elsewhere. For female couples, the pair simply makes a decision as to which clan name they decide to adopt together, but for male couples a 'decision' about which clan name they adopt must be sought from and arranged by their respective clans' matriarchs, on top of the usual permission to marry. Generally speaking, though, the matriarchs of each clan unanimously rule in favour of the wishes of the couple in question, and it is considered to be an 'administrative' problem - a simple bureaucratic quirk - rather than an existential or moral problem.

In Shalotte myth, when Duená, Goddess of Love and Hate, imbued humans with emotion to relieve them of their mundanity, the power of love took many forms, all of them as valid as the others. Romantic love, as expressed between couples, is considered to be a divine gift, one not thought to be limited to gender.

Although, churches/priests/ministers have the right to choose not to marry a homosexual couple because of religious values and as The Land of Whiskey has a traditional culture with a large population of orthodox religious people, it is difficult for a same-sex couple to find a jurisdiction that will marry them. The Land of Whiskey government is aware of this but currently has no plan to interfere with the freedom of the church.
