[Submitted] A Movement of the Heart in East Lebatuck

Postby Litauengrad » Sun Oct 13, 2019 7:13 am

Validity: Socialist Economic Policy only

Description: After the death of Comrade Stülin, revolutionary leader of East Lebatuck, his successor has publicly accused him of abuses of power, factionalism, and subversion of the worker's revolution. As Stülin was considered to be the center of the Socialist world for the last four decades, Party leaders are scrambling to prepare a response.

Option 1: "Just look at these allegations!" cries Comrade @@RANDOMNAME@@, People's Commissar of Foreign Affairs, before smashing a bust of Stülin on your desk. "Mass incarceration, assassinations of political opponents, not to mention what happened with that bear. He even had his own doctor arrested for being Bigtopian! For the sake of the Revolution, we must denounce Stülin and his policies."

Fallout: Retired politicians are routinely denounced as class traitors

Option 2: @@RANDOMNAME@@, your most trusted advisor and former dogcatcher, urges you to reconsider. "@@LEADER@@, denouncing Stülin would only damage your own credibility. Just last week you dedicated three elementary schools, an observatory, and a new prototype helicopter to Stülin's memory. Not to mention the vacation pictures we just published! Let's maintain Stülin as a socialist icon and quietly brush all this nastiness under the rug. Besides, how could a bear fit into a refrigerator?"

Fallout: Friends of @@Leader@@ are immune to corruption investigations

Option 3: "TREASON!" screams @@RANDOMNAME@@, leader of the Red Youth and top of the graduating class at the Comrade Stülin People's Friendship University. "Our Glorious Worker's Revolution could never have succeeded without the Father of Nations! Greatest Thinker of Socialism, Father of all Children, Iron Sword of the Worker's Revolution, our Guiding Star Stülin! These allegations are nothing less than factionalist propaganda espoused by bourgeois political wreckers. Break off relations with East Lebatuck and mandate that every citizen of @@NATION@@ learn how Stülin saved the Lebatuckese revolution."

Fallout: @@NATION@@'s children know to thank Comrade Stülin for a happy childhood

Option 4: "The operating word there is revolution," mutters Comrade @@RANDOMNAME@@, People's Commissar of Internal Security, before slipping a bug into your coffee cup. "Stülin came to power in the midst of the Lebatuckese Revolution. Everything he ordered was necessary to maintain the dictatorship of the proletariat, including the mass executions in Beiforgrad. We shouldn't be afraid to take the same steps, as long as we only take them against Kulaks, wreckers, and other enemies of the revolution."

Fallout: Nosy neighbors are reported to the government as United Federation spies

Option 5: (Valid for Nations with State Press policy)
"Excuse me, @@LEADER@@!" shouts @@RANDOMNAME@@, elected leader of the Reporter's Union, as he shoves a microphone into your face. "What do you have to say about analysis indicating that Stülin's so-called "Bust the Bigtopians" order would not have been carried out if the free press had been able to warn the Lebatuckese proletariat? Have you considered that socialist criticism of the government is necessary to prevent domination by the nomenklatura? Are you prepared to allow complete freedom of the press?"

Fallout: @@NATION@@ newspapers favorably compare the Sanitation Union to the government

Option 6: "I had a thought," interjects your brother Ioseb, stuffing a wad of United Federation dollars into his back pocket. "If anything, this mess with Comrade Stülin proves that socialism isn't going to work out. I have a couple of friends who can help us reprivatize our industry, and," he lowers his voice to a whisper, "they say they know what really happened with Comrade Bronstein and that bear!"

Fallout: United Federation corporations have a controlling stake in @@NATION@@ industry

Description: Years after the death of Comrade Ioseb Steel, revolutionary leader of East Lebatuck, his successor has publicly accused him of abuses of power, factionalism, and subversion of the worker's revolution. As Steel was considered to be the center of the Socialist world for over four decades, Party leaders are scrambling to prepare a response.

For the sake of the Revolution, we must denounce Comrade Steel, Steelist policy, Steelist art, Steelist agriculture, Steelist industry..."

"Our Glorious Worker's Revolution could never have succeeded without the Father of Nations, the Greatest Thinker of Socialism, the Iron Sword of the Worker's Revolution! These allegations are nothing less than factionalist propaganda. Half of it doesn't even make sense- how could a bear fit into a refrigerator? Break off relations with East Lebatuck and mandate that every citizen of @@NATION@@ learn how Steel saved the Lebatuckese revolution."

Fallout: @@NATION@@'s children know to thank Comrade Steel for a happy childhood

The issue should not involve your nation who wrote it. You should use @@RANDOMNATION@@ or something like that. I like the use of Satire.

Good job on this issue! ;)

I’m not sure what you’re specifically referencing here. Since this issue is for socialist nations the assumption on my part is that a revolution happened somewhere in the backstory. East Lebatuck is a USSR expy, so any reference to a Lebatuckese Revolution are veiled references to the Russian revolution.

It's too long.

If I was writing this, the Stalin analog would be "Joe Steel" instead of "Stülin," and I'd try not to rely as heavily on people recognizing the name --but that might just be personal preference.

The length is the most serious problem with this draft.

I have completed a second draft of this issue.

Two major concerns with this premise.

Firstly, Stalin can only die once. While there are admittedly a lot of issues that make no sense to repeat, this is a particularly egregious example of narrative disconnect on repeat.

Secondly, and more critically, it's an event happening in another nation that has no bearing on my nation*, so it really has no place being an issue in my nation. Issues should be about things that happen within my nation, or to my nation, or directly relating to my nation.

(*by which I mean the Player Nation answering the issue, not Candlewhisper Archive specifically)

You have a point with the first point, but I definitely disagree with the second one; the death of Stalin and Krushchev's thaw had an enormous impact throughout the eastern bloc, with some nations (namely China and Albania) splitting away from the Soviet sphere, while the previously fervently anti-Soviet Yugoslavia improved relations with the USSR.

Thank you for your feedback. I made a slight alteration to the description which I think will meet the first objection. As to the second, I agree with the above poster- the death of Stalin had huge international implications OTL, and although circumstances of each nation here differ the death of a similar "socialist leader" would still merit and even require comment by the government.

Although Stalin died way before I was born, I would assume that irl the death of Stalin had an enormous impact because of the complex history and relations between the USSR and other communist countries.

In NationStates, your Nation doesn’t really have the same level of history and relations with East Lebatuk, so, like Candlewhisper Archive said, the death of Steel wouldn’t really affect your nation.

While Mr Steel is obviously a stand-in for Stalin, and East Lebatuk is a stand-in for the USSR, I don't think you can impose outside knowledge of Mr Stalin onto Mr Steel, or the USSR on East Lebatuk.

Taking my above comments into consideration, I think the death of a foreign socialist leader in a socialist country would only merit condolences

He has that listed at the top of the draft. That's not the standard place for the validity, but I assume he'll read the labels when he fills out the issues submission form and put things in the correct boxes.

The standard place for it is between the description and the options. When you go to submit your issue, you can just read the submission page to see where everything goes.
