UK Politics Thread XI: Boris' Big Bombastic Brexit Bash

Postby The Huskar Social Union » Fri Oct 18, 2019 9:38 am

Latest iteration of the ongoing UK politics thread series, last one was here:

Welcome once more to the latest hot take thread on the glorious calamity that is British Politics, the finest politics on the continent, far better than the French for sure, and those pesky swamp germans (beware of sheep). Here we shall discuss all the current events that dominate the political sphere in the nation of Britannia, in particular BREXIT, the British attempt to leave the European Union which has been going on now for some time.

First Poll will be on the new brexit deal Boris Johnson has secured with the EU, and whether or not you agree with said deal.

I might flesh this OP out more later.

I made this because the other one got to 500 pages, if you were in the process of making a thread sue me.

The Thread formerly known as Prince The Wheels on the Bus go DUP DUP DUP

Well, I'm not a fan of it, and now the Commons likely won't get to vote on it anyway, so...

I'm just bored by the proceedings at this point and want a resolution. Not that there will be one.

my word, what a beautiful title

new thread just in time for the happenings
ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

You missed a trick Huskar. The thread should be called UK Politics Thread XI: The Eleventh Hour of Brexit.

I like that Johnson's deal has changed the NI backstop from being a possibility to a compulsory part of withdrawal.

Ah, the British politics thread. Another 500 pages of misery, screaming and hopelessness await.

So, what does everyone think about Brexit? :p

EDIT: All to the sound, of Boris.

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

that's playing into the remainders hands- bad move.

This is the tricksy bit of getting a deal- underhand contrivances afoot, perchance? From both plug pulling sides of the argument.

ITV Journo: "So, race to the bottom is often a thing talked about with global trade, Labour is talking about workers rights and you need those votes to go through, do you understand those concerns?"

Boris: "yeah. yeah. Well the deal contains a passage that explicitly talks about how both we and europe both agree that we have ambitions on workers rights and environmental protection."

ITV Journo doesn't follow up with any questions and just moves on.

"I PROMISE I WILL TRY TO TRY!" is the best way to interpret that non answer, and the worst way is "Well we do have ambitions. I.E, scrapping them.".

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Also, poor Europe. Do you think they fell for that shit in good faith?

"Well I mean these Trade standards, without us knowing about comparative wages and workplace safety and so on... I mean-"

"Look, we're both going to disagree on the fiddly bits and that's part of the reason for brexit, regulatory autonomy, but we super duper promise that we're on board with the general concept of worker rights, safety, wellbeing, and the environment and cross our hearts won't deliberately undercut your standards in order to take advantage of the generous tariffs you're offering which you wouldn't offer to countries that didn't have environmental protections and good wages and so on. Pinky swear."

"WELL OKAY I GUESS A GENTLEMANS AGREEMENT IS FINE. You're right, provided the regulations are of comparable quality they need not be exactly the same.".

I hope not.

I really really hope not.
