THE EIGHTH INDEPENDENT ASSOCIATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP

In order to celebrate its return to international football and its qualification for the World Cup during the most recent iteration of that competition, the small, alpine nation of Reçueçn is pleased to welcome teams from throughout the multiverse as it hosts a recognized international tournament for the first time. The IAC is home to teams from the most far-flung locales and the most diverse backgrounds; it is an exciting group which is sure to put on some displays not to be missed.

If your nation is one of the thirty-six listed below, you may now post your rosters and IC information in this thread. Please do not post here if you are not competing in the tournament. Please do not reserve posts. Please post any OOC comments or questions in the signup thread.

Format: Xkoranate 0.3.3 will be used, with the NSFS formula and additive style modifiers. Tiebreakers will be points, goal difference, head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, and lastly a coin flip, in that order. WCC ranks are being used, but in conjunction with a generous rp bonus. Space and Aaaaaa, who do not have WCC rankings, but who have participated in recent editions of the IAC, have a number of ranking points in correlation with their recent performance. Reçueçn will be receiving a ranking boost to simulate home-advantage. For any ranking to receive its ranking bonus, it must post a roster in this thread. Your roster post should include your rp permissions and your style modifier.

The group stage will be six groups of six teams. The top two teams from each group will advance, along with the top four third-place teams overall.

Reçueçn IC Info & Roster

Visiting Reçueçn

Reçueçn is a small nation, but it's got a lot to see. If you're visiting for the IAC, you may want to extend your stay to see the sights. Most travelers to Reçueçn will fly into Reçueçn city. As the capital and biggest city, it will definitely have the flight connection you need. Genève, the nation's second city, will also accommodate you in this regard, and both cities will have their fair share of matches. If you are travelling from a nearby country, arriving by rail is also a possibility, and many more Reçueçian cities have international rail connections than have international airports.

For travel within the country, taking the train is probably the way to go. Car rentals are fairly expensive, and many cities restrict downtown access to pedestrians and public transport. When travelling through the countryside, you will find that autoroutes have high tolls, and smaller roads are typically wind annoyingly through steep mountain terrain. However, an extensive rail and tunnel network has been built, and taking the train is fairly cheap between most places in the nation. Bus routes also connect most larger towns. Within cities themselves, public transport is always very high quality and usually very affordable or in some cities, even free. During the IAC, there will be free buses between cities with venues in them. Hopefully these travel tips will enable you to explore the country beyond just the soccer matches.

What to See

Presumably if you're reading this, the main attraction that has brought you to Reçueçn is the eighth IAC, or Independents' Cup. The games will be played in eight stadiums in five cities around Reçueçn, with Genève and Reçueçn City taking the lion's share. But if you want to see a bit more of Reçueçn, consider taking a ride up to a cute alpine village and hiking along a mountain ridge to appreciate the amazing views we have to offer. Or take a swim in a mountain lake and cool off in the shadow of the peaks. If you really are looking to ditch the heat, check out the ice tunnels at the Écho glaciers. Or, if you come back in the winter, you can hit the slopes--they might be nice and empty around now since all our skiers are Olympic athletes and are in Liventia searching for gold!

If the mountains aren't for you, consider visiting our world-famous cheese museum--free samples! Or visit the Genève Cathedral if the culture you're looking for isn't bacteria. Genève, Reçueçn, Zimmerich--all cities which will be hosting IAC games--each have a beautiful downtown historic district worth the walking tour. Check them out if your idea of a good time means wandering through medieval fortifications or strolling down cobbled alleys. If what's up your alley is shopping, then we've got that too--check out Genève's luxury district for high end jewelry, fashion, watches, and more. Exchanging your money should be no problem: the Reçueçian guilder is very stable and worth only a little more than the NSD.

Where to Stay, What to Eat

If you are on the search for the perfect hotel for your stay in Reçueçn, worry not. Plenty of all kinds abound in and around each major city, whether you're looking for the four star experience, or just want to save a buck. If you'd rather have the personal, local touch, then we've still got you covered: a quick look online will reveal plenty of family-owned bed & breakfasts, as well as short-term rentals with people trying to make some money off the empty spare room one night or week at a time. Hostels are also very popular in Reçueçn, and are a great way to stay near the city center for a very low cost.

What'll you have for dinner? Reçueçn's food is what will make you want to come back for another visit. We love our cheeses, and our national specialty is Raclette, melted cheese scraped over small potatoes, cornichons, and salami. Try it at a restaurant where each table is provided with its own small oven so each diner can melt their own. Another local specialty is Tartiflette, essentially a casserole of potatoes, onions, and lardon (thick-cut bacon) served with a slab of, you guessed it, more melted cheese cooked right over it.

If you find yourself in an alpine pasture hankering for a pique-nique, rather than seated at a fine dining establishment, don't worry, cheese is great for a basket-lunch too. Bring along a baguette and a saucisson, and you've got yourself a meal.

No meal in Reçueçn is complete without a glass of wine, and the local product is certainly worth the connoisseur's time. Reçuecian wine varies immensely depending on whether you're south, west, or north of the Alps, so try a few varieties and pick your favorite. If you need a pairing for your meal, it just so happens that every single person you meet on the street in the country is a self-proclaimed expert ready with helpful advice. Just don't stop them on their way home for dinner.

[OOC note on scheduling: The schedule of the tournament is limited by the fact that IC Reçueçn only has eight stadiums it thinks fit the requirements for the IAC. Each matchday has 18 games, too many to fit into eight stadiums in one day. So although OOC all the games in a matchday will be scorinated at once, IC, groups A, B, and C, will play on alternate days from groups D, E, and F. The home of the Unicorns, Reçueçn’s national team, Reçueçn’s national stadium is located in the capital of the nation and has hosted every one of the RNFT’s home games. National Stadium was never officially named, and so is referred to as “national stadium” simply because that’s what it is—the national stadium. It is the largest stadium in the country and will host the IAC 8 final.

Carl III Stadium, Reçueçn

Carl III Stadium is the home stadium of Reçueçn FC, Reçueçn’s biggest and historically most successful soccer team. Also located in the capital city, this stadium is known for its controversial name—Carl III was the first and only king of Reçueçn and was wildly unpopular for having invaded most of the country and ruling it with an iron fist. A rebellion led to his deposition and the creation of the Allied States. Inhabitants of other parts of the country, therefore, disapprove of the name, although those from Reçueçn City still use Carl III as an example of their superiority—on the football pitch.

Located just outside the city up the hill, a gap in the stands at one corner of the field allows a view of gorgeous Lac Genève during day games, and at night, the sparkling lights of the city on its shore.

Siegstadion, Zimmerich

Siegstadion, or, translated, Victory Stadium, has a lot to represent in Reçueçian culture. Zimmerich's eponymous football club is the premier side in the nation with a background from the German-speaking minority. Thus the stadium represents not only the team and the region it comes from, but to some extent, an entire language group in the country (although some German-speakers have their own teams they choose to root for). The stadium is white and in the form of an elipse, ringed with faux pillars, to conjure up the idea of an ancient Greek temple.

Sporting Field, Renwyll

Sporting Field, also referred to as the Champs du Sport, is in Renwyll, the city, and is home to Renwyll, the football club. Renwyll has surprised people with how well its done for itself in the last couple seasons of league play, as well as UICA tournaments. Reçuecians hope that success will translate to the national team as they play games here over the course of the IAC.

Arena der Alpen, Heldingen

One of only two stadiums hosting games in this IAC which is located in a Germanophone region of the nation, the Arena der Alpen is high in the Reçueçian Alps, and the altitude may pose a small issue for teams not used to playing in similar situations. That said, this is yet another beautiful stadium; Heldingen has great views of the surrounding mountains, and any tourists attending games here may want to schedule a little extra time for a hike.

Chapel-Field House, Reçueçn

The oldest stadium in the nation in continuous professional use, Chapel-Field House gave its name to the team that plays there. Admittedly a small stadium for a tournament of this size, Chapel-Field House is unexpectedly jumping into the limelight during this IAC as normally it and its team are overshadowed by the much bigger Reçueçn FC in the same city. It was chosen to host games during this tournament thanks to its proximity to other stadiums being used in order to cut down on travel time.

National Team Information

The Reçuecian National Team is a relative unknown, but if it's known for anything, it would be for its defensive style. This is partly due to the large influence of Reçueçn FC on the team--the most popular domestic club in Reçueçn plays about as defensive a game as you can imagine. This is balanced out to some extent by the players from other teams with more attacking philosophies, but the league as a whole tends towards defense, and it shows in the national team. Furthermore, Gerauld Firaut, the team's #1 goalie, is the best player on the team by a solid margin--likely the only truly world class player. He and his defense for the foundation for the team as a whole. The team plays in a 4-3-3 formation, but sometimes the wings drop back, almost making it a 4-5-1. In general, the team's strategy and tactics are solid--Jacques Tremblay, the coach, knows his stuff despite his age. The weakness would be the quality of the talent on the team--Reçueçn has not yet had the opportunity to develop or train true world class talent.

The Reçueçian National Team's mascot is the Unicorn; thus another name for the team is "The Unicorns". The fantastical creature has been a symbol of Reçueçn for almost two millennia and is also the national animal, appearing as the supporters in the national coat of arms.

The team's kit represents the colors of the flag in a quite literal fashion. This kit was first one the Unicorns ever wore, dating back to the 59th Baptism of Fire. Today it is unpopular with fans, who think it is old-fashioned, badly designed, and ugly. Although the RNFA secretly admits that the fans are right and aims to replace the kit soon, they tout it as 'traditional' and promote its value as a connection to the team's past.

Jacques Tremblay: Manager, 70 years old.
Old and wise, and known for his eternal ability to surprise and innovate, Jacques Tremblay is often seen as the father of modern Reçuecian football. He was once the coach of Associated Savoie, and during that period they performed much better than they had before or than they have since. His new method brought great players to the team, and when he retired, it hurt the team greatly. Despite his retirement, when asked to coach the national team for the Baptism of fire, did not refuse. He and Gerauld Firaut hold together the national team, oft riven with tension. Really, Tremblay is too old to still be coaching a soccer team, especially at the international level. Yet his players still hold a lot of respect for him, both as the Reçuecian footballing legend that he is, but also now as a coach and mentor--even if sometimes they wish he'd let them unwind a little more.

Starters
Gerauld Firaut Goalkeeper, 24 years old. Team captain. Jersey #1. Plays for Reçueçn FC.
Responsible and mature for his age, Firaut is widely considered the best player in Reçeuçn. His star status does not extend outside the country as of yet, however. Of course, as a goalie, it may be hard to compete with the international fame that strikers often achieve. His goal-tending skill, however, is unparalleled. When he's not putting up a wall in the net, Firaut acts as his team's moral compass off the pitch. Level-headed and perceptive, Firaut is a wonderful leader for the team, both in and outside the game. His tactical instincts are not bad, and it's not uncommon to hear him yelling instructions to his defense. Firaut is happily married and has a 23-month-old daughter.

Leo Beck: Sweeper, 28 years old. Jersey #2. Plays for Reçueçn FC.
During the regular season, Beck plays on the same team as his goalkeeper, Gerauld Firaut. Thus on the national team as well, they work well together. Although older than Firaut, he looks up to him as a leader, and is very protective of him, as well as Reçueçn FC's reputation--sometimes to a point that causes conflict with teammates from other clubs. Beck is a stellar player and helps fill out his team's defensive capabilities.

Ägidius Heissler: Left back, 34 years old. Jersey #3. Plays for Itrino.
Heissler is getting a bit older, but he can always find a way to trap an attack in the corner, and then win the goal kick. A very tall man, he's come in useful for the Unicorns in many a set piece where he's headed away a dangerous corner kick or free kick. His phlegmatic personality is an asset to a team largely full of high-strung starlets fighting for attention.

Norman Bright: Center back, 32 years old. Jersey #4. Plays for Renwyll.
Bright was widely credited for Renwyll's high performance in the Globe Cup 56. He has good spacial awareness and an ability to control the center of the box without letting his mark slip. When paired with a strong goalie, Bright really shines, and has the potential to turn that pair into a duo to be reckoned with... if they are on the same page.

Oliver Spencer: Right back, 23 years old. Jersey #5. Plays for Reçueçn FC.
Another one of Reçueçn FC's star defenders, Spencer is often outshone by Firaut, and can never decide whether the rivalry he thinks they have is more important than team spirit or not.

Luc Pélissier: Left midfielder, 30 years old. Jersey #6. Just finished a contract with Puits Tunnellers.
Although Pélissier's spot as a national team starter isn't undeserved, he doesn't have quite the same level of talent as some of the other stars, so he makes up for it usually by either taking someone else's side in an argument, or by boasting about one of his several impressive hobbies.

Grégoire Leclair: Defensive midfielder, 28 years old. Jersey #18. Plays for Association Genève.
Leclair is the newest promotion from the reserves to the starting squad, thanks to a tactical decision made by Jacques Tremblay. In the past, Tremblay had started Saunders, his attacking midfielder. That he has listed Leclair as a starter for qualifications implies that he is taking a more defensive strategy. Leclair and Saunders have probably never been on the field for the national team at the same time: Tremblay appears to consider their roles as being quite opposite. Leclair's specialty is going back and clearing the ball out of dangerous situations.

Maynard Hebron: Right midfielder, 25 years old. Jersey #8. Plays for the Alpine Armageddon.
The unsung hero of the Alpine Armageddon (one of the lowest ranked teams in domestic competition in Reçueçn), Hebron is a great proponent of football development across the nation, especially on behalf of smaller amateur teams who want to join the RNFL. This has lead in the past to a resentful attitude on his part towards some of the larger clubs--clubs who provide most of the players on the national team. Hebron's sports activism, however, is smiled upon by most people in Reçueçn, and with the advent of the new Ministry of Sport, he hopes for more opportunities for him to promote soccer throughout the country. World cup qualifications are a wonderful stage on which he can gain visibility.

Hippolyte Lavigne: Left wing, 31 years old. Jersey #9. Plays for Bayern Heidelberg.
Lavigne can make great crosses, but can tense up under pressure if he has to score himself. His best skill is his ability to take the ball from the midfielders, get deep into attacking territory, and feed it to a striker. Lavigne is very tall, which is probably what is responsible for his position as a leading figure on and off the field.

Frank "Franky" Adams: Center forward, 19 years old. Jersey #10. Plays for Association Genève.
Young, extremely talented, and rather cocky, Franky, who plays for Association Genève in the RNFL, really makes their team. When he has a bad shooting streak, his team has a losing streak, and vice versa. Franky knows this. At Association Genève, the team and the fans love him. At the national team, they tolerate him--his rivalries with Reçueçn FC's players have caused tension in the past, putting more responsibility on Tremblay to defuse the situation. Tremblay, incidentally, thinks Franky is a bit conceited, but is also keenly aware of his talent. Franky is the national team's all-time leading scorer (29 goals in 59 games). Still a teenager, it looks like he will be one of the faces of Reçuecian football for a while, and he's couldn't be more thrilled about it--if anything's bigger than his talent, it's his personality. The recent run of success the unicorns have had allowed him to overcome some of his rivalries with his teammates, but it doesn't look like he'll ever settle down to become the sort of spiritual leader a player like Firaut is. He will probably continue to clown around for years.

Freeman Lebo: Right wing, 26 years old. Jersey #11. Played most recently for Klyde FC (Cosumar).
Lebo can score goals, is highly motivated, and persevering. Like some others, however, he is a bit high-strung. Originally he was Puits Tunnellers' main goal scorer, but was disappointed when they finished last in the league--and he had trouble getting along with some of the others on the team. He was happy to go his own way and become one of only a few Reçuecian players who played abroad. Lebo found a spot playing for Cosumar's Klyde FC for a few seasons, making a few decent globe cup runs along the way. He eventually quit starting for the team however, when he ceased to be the young blood they'd bought him as.

Reserves
Jannick Bechtholdt: Goalkeeper, 31 years old. Jersey #12. Plays for Association Genève.
Association Genève's starting keeper has to alternately put up with being a goalie on a team where it's all about the attack, and being goalie on the national team where he is constantly outclassed by Gerald Firaut. Often ignored, he is still a great player.

Emanuele Cutrona: Sweeper, 20 years old. Jersey # 13. Plays for Harrim FC.
Cutrona is one of the two latest callups for the national team, first playing during IAC 7. He is the only Italian-speaking player on the team (although others are from Italian-speaking clubs). He is the second youngest player on the squad, besides the precocious Franky. He and Franky, of course, get along pretty well, constantly joking around and pulling pranks. Sometimes next to Franky, even Cutrona seems older and more mature. Paulin Bourguignon: Left back, 21 years old. Jersey #14. Plays for Stomford.
Bourguignon is the kind of defensive player who is always trying to clear the ball by booting it up the field as hard as he can. That is, at least, when he's not in the opponents' box on a corner kick trying to score. Big on counter-attacks, he sometimes outpaces the mid-fielders, usually to his coach's dismay.

Lukas Kayserling: Center back, 20 years old. Jersey #15. Plays for Hesse Sporting.
Kayserling sometimes has difficulty communicating as he doesn't speak English or French as well as most of the other team members, and most of them don't speak German. However, at press conferences, he's great at sitting there and looking somber. A tall, intimidating figure, he takes his job very seriously; he takes everything seriously.

Klaus Klemm: Right back, 28 years old. Jersey #16. Plays for Chapel-Field House.
Plays defense, but as if he were a mid-fielder. He plays for Chapel-Field House, a team from the same city as Reçueçn FC, but with a much smaller fan-base. This bothers Klemm. Since the national team games are usually played in the capital too, he's always insisting that it's his turf and that he won't be made a second-class citizen. Nobody else thinks he is; he's a solid player.

Raoul Lavigne: Left midfielder, 21 years old. Jersey #17. Plays for Bonneville Sporting.
No relation of the slightly more well-known Hippolyte Lavigne who starts for the team, Raoul is the other of the Unicorns' two latest callups besides Emanuele Cutrona. He caught the NT's scouts' eyes after helping Bonneville Sporting to a couple good seasons. Still a newcomer on the team, he hasn't perhaps 'clicked' yet, but given the chance to play, should be able to distinguish himself.

Harold Saunders: Attacking midfielder, 27 years old. Jersey #7. Plays for Association Genève.
Saunders is synonymous with an aggressive style of play, especially in the midfield. He seems to always be able to find a way to give the ball to Franky. One of the leaders of the team, he is emotionally well-balanced on and off the field. For qualifiers he has just recently been demoted off the starting line-up as Tremblay looks for a more defensive style of play.

Thomas Büchel: Right midfielder, 30 years old. Jersey #19. Plays for Reçueçn FC.
Büchel is a very fluid player, who doesn't let himself get locked into the same rut. His best trait is his situational ability, which, when coupled with his dribbling and passing skills, makes him a formidable force when trying to maintain possession or get the ball forward.

Per Tegeler: Left wing, 23 years old. Jersey #20. Plays for Annedine Sporting.
Good at receiving the ball from the defense or mid-field, trapping it in general, and taking it into the 18-yard box and shooting. A possible weakness of Tegeler's is passing: either he doesn't, or it's long air balls.

Ly Nasser: Center forward, 22 years old. Jersey #21. Plays for Zimmerich FC.
Nasser loves to shoot from far out, and often shoots high. Despite this, he makes up for it with his sheer number of shots. Incredibly aggressive, and loved by Zimmerich fans. Personally, he is of the opinion that he is one of the best strikers in the world. He is certainly an asset to the team, although his attacking style doesn't always mesh well with their more defensive method of play.

Jean-Baptiste Brochard: Right wing, 26 years old. Jersey #22. Plays for Lampadaires Associated.
Brochard is incredibly fast, and having the ball doesn't slow him down hardly at all. Although Brochard is weaker in set pieces and organized attacks, he is strong on the counterattack and the breakaway, where he can outpace the opposing team's defenders.

Helies de Malhortye: Goalkeeper, 34 years old. Jersey #23. Plays for Zimmerich FC.
De Malhortye has noble blood and is rather high-strung--but then, what football player isn't? A lot of other goalies, I guess. De Malhortye is still a solid choice for a back-up goalie, but on a team with Firaut, there's little call for him. His one particular strength is blocking penalties.

Darkmania are the national team who has slowly and silently climed up the ranks despite that they got arse rekted at the Indipendent Cup 7. The national team has not lost their moral and are determant to make it into the World Cup for the first time. And they have decided not to give up untill they can finaly step into the pitch of the host stadias at the WC.

Not much has changed for Darkmania with the exception of a new stadium being given clearance to being able to host international games.

The Space Team compete usually in the Independant Cup and is happy to return in the 8th in the home of Reçueçn. After the cup terminates we are happy to welcome back our friends for a match of enjoyment IN SPACE! The Academy of Space is home to a fully enclosed, gravity containing event facility known as the "Extraterrestrial Dome of Sport". The dome is constructed of clear plasticized glass allowing a clear view of the stars and planets above. The dome rotates with respect to its surroundings during matches for enhanced viewing, though any nearby stars (Stars within 2 or fewer Astronomical Units) will remain on the backside of the playing field to prevent glaring and temperature control. The Dome of Sport also serves as the official training facility for Team Space Team in preparation for international competition and away games.

[Kurovija]

It is rare to see Kurovija partake in an international conversation, let alone a football competition. Usually closed off behind its borders, it usually avoids interaction with the world around it. As such, this IAC forms the first confrontation it takes part in. Having developed its own football for decades now, this might turn into a difficult affair.

However, this doesn’t mean the squad are novices to the sport. Football plays its part in society, even if a national structure, let alone professional sports, do not exist in what the Kurovijan leadership calls a Glorious Republic (and official sources a psychotic dictatorship). Most big cities have neighbourhood competitions and there are plenty of exciting factory derbies.

However, the team is completely recruited from the Corps and this is no surprise. Whilst some would consider it a gargantuan standing army, it is seen as the root of education and values. Every youngster at the age of fourteen partakes in initiation camps and from sixteen to twenty is a full time corps member. During that period, he will execute military tasks but also community service and get educated in various terrains. Between the ages of twenty and twenty-four, one is a senior Corps member. This means that he or she will still be involved in the Corps half of the time, but also will specialise in their future line of work. A small amount of youngsters remain in the Corps for life, quite usually as a specialist or an officer.

The squad exists, with five exceptions, as such out of young players. Being part of the Corps also means that there is plenty of time for physical development and the games between battalions and units ensure the highest level of competition… Of Kurovija, one must add. From these confrontations, the 23 men who will represent the red-and-white flag have been selected.

The honour to lead this group of twenty-three to Reçueçn fell to Lieutenant Gintaras Zinkevicius. There is little known about his prowess near football fields, so we can only imagine that the high command saw through his nimble frame and discover a hidden gem of football management. Or they have some sort of ulterior motive, of course. Very unlikely.

With that in mind, the football knowledge will have to come from his NCO Janis Starkovs, a kind and clever man who, during the training days ahead of travelling to Reçueçn, created a conservative 5-4-1 system in which the back three and Rusas fold into a four-man line when in attack. The wingers are supposed to cover a lot of ground, folding back-and-forth and giving one another options when in possession. In how far it will stand against the modern football interpretations of some of the top competitors in this tournament, remains a mystery for now.

TEAM HISTORY
This is the official roster, featuring the Elite Eleven, an independent squad of Drawkians who have played all sports at a professional level for a confusingly long time. The old Kick Corps has been essentially removed, the players let go, and replaced by this squad of ridiculously skilled, annoyingly arrogant, and possibly immortal sportsmen. Nobody knows where they came from, or why DISC decided to replace the Kick Corps with them, but here they are. Just don't ask the baseball fans about them.
Drawkian soccer, and indeed, sporting in general, is mostly offensive-minded. This is reflected in the style indicator and in the formation. Drawkian soccer has not really been exposed to outside influences, and thus may look or feel strange to those used to "normal" football. Nevertheless, the Eleven are still good at what they do, and prize in an enduring game, moving the ball around nearly constantly and keeping energy going, aiming to tire out the opposing team. Of course, Drawkians aren't humans, but you can read about that elsewhere. Despite the fact that usually soccer is a female-only sport in Drawkland, the Elite Eleven have overturned that caveat as the higher-ups deemed them a suitable replacement in the interim as the real Kick Corps hides away for a few cycles and gets their shit back together.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM - WOMEN

These are tough times for Fleftic football. After having experienced the rise of a so-called "golden generation" of players at right around the same time that Abanhfleft finally joined the greater multiverse, everyone is seemingly losing their heads now that the Fleftic teams are just losing left and right. Rebuilding is the word that everyone knows is being thought but not said, but even that is encountering problems seeing as even Abanhfleft's youth teams are doing very poorly in their competitions. The danger of overperforming in the early years has seemingly finally caught up with the Democratic Republic, and now the Samahang Futbol ng Abanhfleft is having to do everything in its power to reverse a troubling trend and finally get this sports-obsessed nation back on the right track. But is the Independents Cup the right place to do that? There is, as always, only one way to find out.

Stephanie Bryan finally gets to represent the blue, orange, and green once again after over four years of sitting out due to a new reliance on the likes of Yannie Redborne and Yelena Valinovskaya to ride the bench while Victoria Carter is on form, but with Redborne now retiring from international footie and Valinovskaya recovering from ligament repair surgery, Steph will now get the chance to be seen riding the Fleftic bench once again. But whether she will be the long-term replacement for Carter and the rest is still up in the air as there are more promising keepers out there, at least according to Holly Jonasson. Finally gets a run out as the starter for the women's national team, at least for the 5th Independents Cup.

RB: Queen YARNALL 20 y/o, Admiral Porcusces Women
A quiet and sturdy defender who for her age is already making waves not only in the youth leagues but also in her handful of appearances for the Admiral Porcusces Women senior team. Still needs some work obviously but she could have a very high ceiling indeed.

RCB: Catarina SOLER 33 y/o, Keephall Valkyries
Soler has served as a dependable supporting unit for both center-backs, but once again she is a player that is played out of position in most international games that she gets to play. Soler prefers being a true center-back, but that doesn't mean that she shirks from the responsibilities of being a central fullback shifted a little to the right or the left. Soler had a chance to rise up to the senior women's team but a drop in form coinciding with injuries has kept her out of the national team setup until now. Now Catarina wants to prove that she still has what it takes to be an international quality center back.

LCB: Miranda SULLINS 27 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis Women
An exciting prospect if only for the fact that she had gotten herself noticed through the Sporting Ceneisis youth academy, which had been a bit neglected by Artemio Peres in favor of getting players both locally and abroad for as much as his team's Bellinsgauzenian boss is willing to let him spend. Still, it wouldn't do to take away from the fact that she is indeed a good defender, if a bit raw even for the standards of the under-21 teams. And an international call-up such as thing can do no harm to her career. Right?

LB: Deborah RIDDLES 25 y/o, Keephall Valkyries
Right now, she's a left back, but Deborah is a natural wing-back who has the potential to develop into an out-and-out winger. Deborah is currently playing with the defense, but only because that is her best footballing position at the moment. Still loves to throw in a cross and will often clog up the left side of the field alongside the team's out-and-out left wingers.

RM: Stephanie WINTER-SLAUGHTER 26 y/o, Marinos Thimpodopoulos Women (Fhulghamous Peninsula, playing in the Fleftic Ladies' Premier League)
Winter-Slaughter's surname sounds rather weird when you consider her biggest asset is an unprecedented sense of justice, but it really is. Winter-Slaughter, while a competent midfielder with enough room to grow, became much more notorious for her actions both in and outside of the field, often helping opponents and team-mates at distress from injuries or pretty much anything else. Conquered some hearts for her kindness, funnily enough. Stephanie was given Fleftic citizenship on the recommendation of Heinrich Wurzmann after the disappearance of the Unified Sunrise Islands so that Abanhfleft could take advantage of her talents.

LM: ERIN Jensdottir-Jennings 29 y/o, Rosenpfelblatz City Ladies
We finally come to one of the most controversial additions to Abanhfleft's Independents Cup squad yet. Not a person living in Abanhfleft hasn't heard of the story of Erin Jensdottir and her friend Britt Hanokssen. The two of them had gotten in trouble with an Anglatian gang and their friend Bisera Haralampieva, of Rosen City Ladies and Pridnestrovia women's national team fame, called on another friend of hers to get Erin and Britt out of trouble. They did so by faking Erin and Britt's deaths and substituting them for two dead bodies. Britt and Erin had ended up playing for FC United of Riuwiee in the seventh tier of Fleftic football before they finally came clean about their status, resulting in the biggest ever points deduction in Fleftic football history and a massive settlement package with Hunsen Loggers from United of Riuwiee for both Erin and Britt. Erin is described as the complete playmaker able to operate from deep or right in front with the forwards, which is why Heinrich Wurzmann recommended her naturalization in time for the Independents Cup.

RW: Elene LINER 23 y/o, Sarvusdalamoive Ladies
Even at her young age, Elene already has the look of a future fantastic keeper. Well, what else can be said about the Sarvusdalamoive Football Academy, which has turned out great Fleftic keepers like Maksim Varamoninov and Victoria Carter? Unfortunately, she's slipped down the pecking order, but only because Brook Arzate deserves the chance to start this time. She had a lot to make up for after that emotionally devastating penalty shootout loss against Schottia in the 9th Under-15 World Cup and she ended up not having the mental strength to get over the disappointment of the shootout so she decided to become a striker instead. This way she hopes to emulate some of Abanhfleft's star forwards like Matthew Cave and Ruud Akinfenyor who started off as goalkeepers and then decided to make the move up to the top of the pitch.

CAM: Prudence WOODWARD 23 y/o, Duhblakk Aztecs
Prudence Woodward is the third and final player of Panemian descent to represent the blue, orange, and green for the Sporting World Cup. She is the younger sister of Julius Woodward and her future appears to be in central attacking midfield. Prudence is already displaying a taste for clever through-balls and occupying pockets of space in which she could create chances and even score a few goals herself. Prudence has also been rumored to be displaying more than just friendly attention and camaraderie with the team's resident lesbian Poppaea Fleet-Street but that's hardly important to the conversation. But although nothing has been confirmed yet, it could be said that it won't be much of a surprise if Prudence came out and admitted that she has a relationship with Poppaea. Also already a mother after an argument with Prudence led to a one-night stand with fellow under-18 teammate Prince William Luckless.

LW: Amelie RUSEV 23 y/o, Ludogorets Markovsky Ladies
Amelie Rusev is the best player on current Fleftic under-18 team after Gareth Williamson. At just 18 years old, she's already looking like the complete winger package. Not only is she both quick and light on her feet and strong in the air and during challenges, she is ambidextrous, able to use both feet to send in long balls and crosses into the box when she wants. With that added crossing ability, Amelie is already on her way to the first team of Ludogorets Markovsky Ladies at such a tender age. Kasper Molak will surely look to make Amelie the successor to Raisa Korovina as the next Miss Ludogorets.

ST: Kelly McGINNIS 23 y/o, Hoventon & Corlington Town (Mercedini)
Kelly McGinnis could very well be the next Chelsea Stuart. Lord knows she's got the raw talent in her veins and her feet. Her only problem is in getting out of Besanza to continue her development and make sure that it's on the right track to actually making her the next Chelsea Stuart. Kelly wants to move abroad to develop herself in a world-class side, and she believes that the Sporting World Cup is her way to gaining that attention and getting that move abroad. She did well in her first stint abroad, winning a domestic cup with Mercedini's Hoventon & Corlington Town, but another potential loan move to the Gallian Union fell through and she's had to stay with Airbus Besanza for this season. This could very well change though as another opportunity could be opening up for her, but it's going to take her much farther away from the Fhulghamous than just Mercedini...

RESERVES
GK: Ursula QATINTIKI 31 y/o, Crisisbless Athletic (Nephara)
Qatintiki is a ferocious keeper who believes herself to be a good sweeper but unfortunately doesn't have all the necessary skills to be an actual sweeper keeper. Fortunately for her, she's managed to keep 10 clean sheets in the Premier Development League (Ladies' Division) for Sarvusdalamoive Ladies. Unfortunately for her, this performance hasn't carried to her first international call-up in the Sporting World Cup, where she conceded a total of 14 goals in the tournament. But the presence of an experienced back four in front of her could help her concede less in this tournament. Despite being a rapidly rising star in Sarvusdalamoive, Qatintiki opted to cut her contract and sign up for the Pridnestrovian Volunteer Legions in ESTORVIPA. She could actually be charged with treason for fighting for another sovereign nation but the SFA has pulled favors with the Ministry of Justice to delay her trial until the end of the Independents Cup.

GK: Bronwyn CHURCHILL 23 y/o, Rosenpfelblatz City Ladies
Bronwyn is the daughter of Rosenpfelblatz City's new manager Joseph "Joe" Churchill, one of the most decorated managers in the sport within the Fleftic sphere of influence. Bronwyn came with her dad to Rosenpfelblatz and immediately settled in well with the Lady Sky Blues' academy. She is a traditional keeper who prefers to keep close to goal and catch or slap away shots from that position, although she is learning to become a more athletic keeper now that she's training with the likes of Yannie Redborne, Marfa Kirilenko, and Blaze Chrzanowska. It should be noted that Joe Churchill would have liked it more if his daughter had not wanted to be a goalkeeper, but at least he as a father won't worry about where she's been before, during, and after training because they're always in close proximity to each other.

RB: Colleen ADAMS 27 y/o, Sporting Ceneisis Women
There was a time when people wondered what Colleen can offer to the national side. Seven years on and now we know what it is: defensive solidity in the back four. What more can a team ask for then? Well, maybe less yellow and red cards from Colleen. She's had her fair share of those at club level and the SFA is not really keen on her starting up a new account with the referees at the Independents Cup.

CB: Christy SHEPLEY 24 y/o, Rosenpfelblatz City Ladies
At 6 feet 2 inches, Christy is already one of the tallest 17-year-old Fleftic central defenders ever in the Democratic Republic and its sphere of influence. Coupled with a supernatural defensive ability, it's a wonder why she's still on the bench and not starting, until one realizes that Christy is quite the thin and willowy girl. She's a good defender and good in aerial and dead-ball situations, there's no doubt about that, but she has to bulk up and get stronger if she is to become one of Abanhfleft's best defenders. She remains on the bench to make way for Miranda Sullins and Catarina Soler in this Independents Cup squad.

CB: Tiera WALRATH 22 y/o, Ogovlich Medusas
One quarter of the Ogovlich backline that won them the Youth Premier League title this season. Like Wilton Kaba beside her in the under-18 team, Tiera's main purpose is to win balls inside the box and then kick it right out of the danger area. Accuracy needs a bit of work though.

LB: Tien GOODLETT 21 y/o, Ogovlich Medusas
The second quarter of the Ogovlich backline that won the Youth Premier League. Tien is more of an attacking fullback who likes to maraud further up the pitch and assist in the attack. She still gets back in defense more times than not but a particularly quick counterattack could still leave her stranded where she can be of no help to her fellow defenders.

RM: SIBUSIZWE Kiggwancha 21 y/o, Athletic Motonou
SIbusizwe's greatest strength lies in the fact that she can win the ball in midfield more times than not. Of course, most of this is against girls and boys on or nearly the same age as she is, but when she turned out for Athletic Motonou's senior side in the last few matchdays of the Ladies' Third Division season (with the title already wrapped up for Motonou) Sibusizwe looked capable of doing much the same thing against players who were much older and much more experienced than her. Sibusizwe won't have to do that against older and experienced players from other national teams just yet, but she will have to do it against her fellow under-18s from other countries starting from this tournament.

CM: Abigail PAPADIAMANTOPOULOS 30 y/o, All-Inclusive Haranguer
Abigail is the tallest player in this roster at 6 feet 8 inches, taller than even her supposed lookalike Stephanie Bryan. Abigail used to play Sunday league with Anglatia's Ross Port Rangers before Fleftic scouts noticed her during the 38th Di Bradini Cup and she signed a contract with Wallace Partridge's All-Inclusive Haranguer. Partridge chose to sign Abigail due to her size and her playstyle which is very much reminiscent of one of the most famous (if not the best) players to put on the black-and-amber shirt in Sutalen "The Beast of Copper Cuprum" Desoka. Despite helping All-Inclusive Haranguer to a fifth-place finish in the 2022-23 season, she was never called up for Anglatia's national team, and with the country now returning to its policy of total isolation, Abigail was given Fleftic citizenship on the recommendation of Heinrich Wurzmann so the SFA could take advantage of her skills on the pitch.

LM: Charlene WILLIAMSON 24 y/o, Admiral Porcusces Women
Charlene Williamson is the overlooked twin sister of Gareth Williamson. The reasons why she's been overlooked is because her main assets in football are mostly pace, acceleration, physicality, and a good long ball. Charlene can also run with the ball or chase it for 90 minutes and anyone stupid enough to try to take the ball away from her would find themselves on the ground almost immediately. Strangely though, Charlene's physicality tends to vanish during set pieces and Charlene could now count herself lucky if she doesn't end up kissing the grass while trying to get a touch on a corner or a free kick. Perhaps that's why Sporting Ceneisis allowed her to go to their provincial rivals Admiral Porcusces.

CAM: BRITT Hanokssen-Hanks 26 y/o, Rosenpfelblatz City Ladies
Erin Jensdottir's best friend and girlfriend, Britt has been called "too ambitious for her own good" by the man who would eventually recommend bringing Britt over to Rosenpfelblatz, Matthew Cave. Britt isn't exactly the best, most mobile, most skillful, fastest, or most accurate player available for the Independents Cup, but she makes up for it in her sheer never-say-die attitude. Other things that other players might consider lost causes are just more challenges for Britt to overcome. That being said, if Britt does end up making an appearance for Abanhfleft, it's probably more out of desperation than anything else. But still, no one knows. Maybe this is the tournament where Britt finally shines bright.

Sabado has the makings of being "the next Fleftic super-sub." No less a footballing authority than Arsenal de Releinthi manager Godric Wexler said so after Sabado had scored the game-winning goal against Lutine to give Abanhfleft a ticket to the Sporting World Cup final. And, judging from her inclusion into the Independents Cup, Heinrich Wurzmann and Miriam Whitaker look to do the same with her for the coming tournament.

FW: Irina BABARUSHCHIK 33 y/o, Dynamo Shebchetsik (Mercedini)
Babarushchik used to be in (friendly) competition with Annamarie Sabado for the position of Arsenal de Releinthi Ladies U-21s' starting striker, but Sabado ended up being the winner in the long run as Babarushchik couldn't wait for Chelsea Stuart to retire (which is still a long time coming anyway) and the half-Pridnestrovian striker struck out for greener pastures in the form of Mercedini's Dynamo Shebchetsik. Now, as both Irina and Annamarie return to the Fleftic national team setup for the Independents Cup, they are once again back to competing with each other for the honor of being the next Fleftic super-sub.

A very down-to-earth manager who drills humility and discipline into her players, making sure they do the hard yards and don't get carried away with their status. After she was let go midway through her second year at Northern Union, the SCFA extended an offer based on the promise of her seasons spent at Pikemouth. There, she was able to build a smaller club into a consistent lower-league challenger, and the hope is that she can do a similar job with the still fledgling Black-and-Reds. She is still viewed positively in overall in the Confederacy after a quarterfinal appearance at the 75th Cup of Harmony.

Player Profiles:
Istaro Munib: Despite his advancing age, Munib continues to be the class of the SCFA between the uprights, and though he is perhaps not as quick and athletic as he once was, his anticipation and ability to read the play has only improved with age.

Djabgor Dzarkhin: Playing in Starblaydia has agreed with Dzarkhin, and he has a firmer hold on the starting left back position than ever. While still not too much of a threat moving up the field, he is a solid wing defender, and slides slightly to the middle when the Black-and-Reds are on the attack.

Tervi Oleb: While technically only vice captain, Oleb will see plenty of time wearing the armband as Damot sees more play from the bench. Oleb himself is no spring chicken, but is still the general of the back line. He will frequently be seen barking instructions, and coordinating the defense with Munib. Having played together at Traal for so long, the two understand and anticipate each other better than most.

Rudi Dalso: Dalso, since taking over the starting spot from Raktsov a year ago, seems to have capably cemented his place in the back four. His timing on challenges is very good, and his positioning is usually excellent. His only real weakness is his aerial play, and he tends to mark very closely and very physically on set pieces to make up for it.

Jinkzta Ulcviecel: Ulcviecel has perhaps lost half a step in recent years, but is still a much faster player than some would anticipate of a fullback of his age, and has the acceleration to make surprise runs down the flank. Pundits have continued to anticipate a fall-off in his play once age catches up with him and he can no longer employ the same tactics, but it has yet to happen.

Aatu Ruoho: Much rests on the shoulders of Brantisvogan's young star. With a rapidly graying roster around him, he will need to be the nucleus of a new team, while attempting to defend their league title next year. One the national team, however, he can fly much more under the radar, though if he continues to produce offense as he has done (2 goals in 6 appearances at the Cup of Harmony) he will soon be more of a focus for opposing defenders.

Vrenz Tambura: Tambura's career has been one of ups and downs and frequent change, one year leading Athletic to win League 2, but unable to supplant Zonde on the national team. Frequently shifting to left midfield after Vladcik's switch to forward, and now back on the right ahead of Zonde, but playing his club ball in Mytannion. Tambura is a flexible, adaptable player to say the least, and can be found ranging all over the midfield to support the ball carrier and close down the opposition. More of a distributor than a shooter.

Iuri Takala: With Damot shifting to play more of a supporting role from the bench, Takala, who has the edge on Stolp for the time being, will shoulder the responsibility of playing at the center of the team. As the spearhead of MSC's recent ascendancy, Takala looks up to the task, and promises to be a player who, in the mold of Damot, can truly do it all.

Jzeovak Vladcik: Vladcik's most recent season with Lublova was a distinct disappointment. After being so dominant when he first came on the scene, Vladcik seems to be having some difficulty adjusting to the fact that opposing defenders and coaches have been paying very close attention to him. While he has consistently gotten significant playing time for the national team, his goalscoring has tailed off, and it would not be surprising to see Donnell pull him for Jzvanic or even Verhulst if his struggles continue.

Zoban Ajao: Perhaps a beacon of hope for Vladcik, Ajao has found his game. No longer simply using his large size and strength, he is a smarter, more experienced player, happy to hold up play or play a flick on rather than try to force his way to a shooting position. He is in the prime of his career, and promises to provide matchup problems for opposing defenses for years to come.

Viordar Rebljeten: While Rebljeten is more accustomed to playing in the middle of the field than out on the right, his preferred style is well suited to playing underneath Ajao. With Ulcviecel frequently moving up the right, Rebljeten will have a fair amount of freedom to move inside where he is most dangerous.

Stovar Krieven: Krieven is an excellent keeper with the misfortune of playing at the same time as a great one in Munib. His single appearance in the Cup of Harmony was a clean sheet kept against the Busoga Islands, and he has delivered strong performances for the national team in the past. Whenever the time comes for Munib to hang up his boots, Krieven will be a very capable replacement.

Danin Geladi: An undistinguished few years of club play in Darmen has likely not helped Geladi's effort to find more playing time with the national team. He is still the best attacking option at left back that Donnell has, but he is still prone to being caught out of position on counterattacks. Accordingly, his playing time for the national team is situational at best.

Zemen Ystrad: Ystrad's resurgence is something of a surprise to most pundits. At an age when most players see their play begin to drop off, Ystrad is playing some of the best football of his life, and fought his way up a crowded depth chart to be the first choice sub at center back. Still a very physical player, and not above hacking at attackers, he has gotten a bit more clever about it. He's the type of player many fans hate, until he joins their team.

Dymek Raktsov: Raktsov struggled with knee injuries over the past year, and there are fears he may never be quite the same player again. At times late in the year with Lublova, he looked tentative, and has struggled to win aerial challenges. If he can't find his game again soon, we may have seen his last action for the Black-and-Reds. Donnell has faced some criticism for including him in her final roster, but one can hope that her faith in him will translate to improvement on the field.

Janar Delu: Stuck behind Ulcviecel for his whole international career, Delu's quality is evident by the fact he has managed to notch 31 caps. His play style is not as aggressive or productive as Ulcviecel's, but he can be relied on to avoid making mistakes, and when he is beaten the play is usually inch-perfect.

Arlo Damot: Still captain of the team on paper, Damot appears to be angling toward international retirement. Donnell must have prevailed upon him that his services are still needed, but appears to be trying to wean her team off relying on their most capped player.

Danin Stolp: The narrow loser (so far) of the unofficial competition to replace Damot, Stolp is still an excellent center mid, as his performances with Algolia attest. He will still likely struggle to get on the field while Damot is still an option.

Lavanya Naqvi: The star of a surprising Emerald Coast team, Naqvi will continue to push Ruoho for playing time at left mid. She is first and foremost a technician, and can usually be relied upon to embarrass at least one opposition player per match.

Eyob Zonde:Losing his speed somewhat, Zonde is still a strong, but slightly less complete option at right wing. His strength, which sees him remain ahead of Teklu on the depth chart, is his pinpoint placement on crosses, through balls, and corner kicks. While he is not the dominant starter he was in his prime, he still very much belongs on this roster. He will also be playing with something of a chip on his shoulder, having been listed for transfer by Damogran.

Meaza Teklu: Takala's midfield companion at MSC, Teklu's game relies on speed and a preternaturally good first touch. Her field vision is not a match for Tambura's or Zonde's, and some have described her club success as a product of playing next to Takala. With some improvement in that area, she would be a strong candidate for the starting job.

Demkjo Jzvanic Make no mistake, Jzvanic is far from finished with his international career. The confederacy's leading goalscorer will still see starts, and will be the go-to when the Black-and-Reds need a clutch goal. His inclusion lower down on the roster seems to indicate a more considered, tactical use of his talents by Donnell. We shall see if this lasts, or if he returns to his spot in the regular lineup in short order.

Jeska Verhulst: Unproven on the international stage, Verhulst is a major part of the influx of talent that may push Yassaca to Superleague contender status. While not much of a physical player, she has uncanny timing on runs, and has the poise to keep a majority of her shots on frame, giving opposing keepers plenty of work.

At long last the squad has been revealed ahead of Barsland's first foray into international football and millions of fans have been stuck to their TVs and radios closely following the buildup to what will be an important moment in Barsland football history. Recently appointed national manager, John Mason spoke to reporters earlier today: "This is a huge moment for football fans across the nation, and as such I've chosen the squad that represents us best." Most fans are expecting him to play a simple, direct, no-frills attacking game, and will hope that the team entertains us while bagging at least a couple of goals.

Jack Taylor: This young midfielder is full of energy and has a keen eye for a key pass. His quality on and off the ball will be crucial in achieving Mason's brand of fast, direct, attacking football.
Steve Watson: The strong center-back is a natural leader with a bite more fierce than his bark. Some might criticize his 'dirty' style, but in his eyes the only thing that matters is protecting his goal.

The Joppa Jaguars Soccer Team hosted a game the night before against the University of Olympia. After a convincing 6-1 victory, Coach Jones told her team that they were to report to the sports facility Monday morning.

Phil Thomas and Madison Nichols had slept a little later than usual that morning. After going through the motions of a morning workout, they had stopped by a local sandwich place near campus. Thomas and Nichols talked a bit.

“It looked like you had some difficulty this morning,” Thomas said.

“I’m not thinking about what happened this morning. I’m still amazed about last night.”

“Me too. 6-1. We kilt it.”

“Not the game, Phil. You know what I mean…”

At that moment, they could both hear their iPhones buzzing. They ended their conversation and Phil checked the message.

“Sexy Hips.”

“What is it, Phil?”

“Look.”

On a good day, The Wilson Pickett Teacher’s College is a good 30-minute drive north of the University of Joppa. Their soccer coach, Jasmine Hawkins, also gave their team liberty until Monday morning. Despite this, the ladies who are also on the National Team were just stepping out of the locker room after a morning workout.

Steffi Tucker had assisted Carla DiGregorio in her workout & Rachel Medrano helped out Jackie Bishop that morning. All four played in Pickett College’s 2-1 win over the University of South Joppa last night.

“So, we headed to the sandwich shop, Steffi?”

Neither Tucker nor Medrano were especially concerned about maintaining a waifish appearance.

“You might want to order a salad for Miss Bishop.”

Jackie Bishop was ordered by Coach Hawkins to maintain a strict diet.

“Speak for yourself. Besides,…”

“Real women have curves,” the four said in unison.

At that moment, they all heard their iPhones buzzing. Each of them checked the message.

“Oh…Shuckie Ducky.”

Todd’s Cove had beaten the University of Portsmouth 4-0 on the road last night. During the bus ride back, Coach Zimmerman gave the team the next two days off.

After their morning workout, Hattie Lowenthal, Erin Height and Abby Salliewhite met for lunch at a local sandwich shop. All three are on the National Team. Lowenthal and Height are freshman while Salliewhite, a junior, is their mentor. The younger players ask Abby about choosing a major.

“International Relations. My first summer was totally amazing. Barcelona, the Basque Country, Bordeaux. It was wonderful. I didn’t want to come back. You’ve got to go.”

“What about this past summer?” Lowenthal asked.

“Deseret, which is total Dullsville! The food there… it’s almost as bad as Tamgu.

Height and Lowenthal held their stomachs at the mention of the word Tamgu. Most of the National team suffered an epic rash of food poisoning during a tournament there in August.

“Why’d you have to mention that…?”

At that moment, they all heard their iPhones buzzing. Salliewhite checks her message.

“Oh…Snapple apple.”

“What is it Abby?”

“It’s the official schedule for Reçueçn next month, the Independent’s Cup.”

“Is it that bad?”

“Girls, we got our work cut out for us.”

[Fujai]

Fujai (fu:'jaɪ, foo-yEYE) is a small nation of only 6 million residents, and while it has a long history of domestic football, it never has been a player on the international scale. Until now, that is. The IAC 8 will be Fujai's first football competition in the wider multiverse, and both the team and the Fujansk people are eager to perform.

The national team, is made up of the finest players in Fujai, though few would be considered of truly international quality. Most of the national team players come from Fujai's top league, Fyrstserien, though a few come from the second division, Annarserien, and one comes from a university team. While Fujansk teams are more equal in skill than the average league, the largest teams with the best players tend to be Solbakken IL and Bruland IF from the capital of Keiserholde, Trondsnes FF from Strafsund, and Almoren IL from Almoren in the north. They'll be interesting to watch when the two teams play.

Recent problems and another new start

The last season, the governance of national football was a complete mess, and it reflected in all circles of competition. The team went bad in Independents Cup, the league lost revenue, and chaos was installed. The coup de grace in the failed Alfred Delmas' tenure was the fact Lisander did not sign up to World Cup by the incompetence of FLF bureaucratic roster. Delmas and its board left FLF, and in his place, a new board was appointed by Ministry for Sport. Some people advance that His Highness, Prince Johannes, actively participated in the selection of the new board, since Adrian Stannis, the new President, is a professional administrator, that helped AS Virtus 1904 when the team was sold to Hermine Group. Stannis, aged 51, also played two seasons of professional football, nearly 30 years ago, as a reserve goalkeeper for Racing Club de Soria.

Stannis is fixing all messes. In a show of commitment, he was there when the NS World Cup Committee opened signups for WC 84, and as the first nation (apart committee members) to signups. Also, based on his time of a player, he is giving more space to players. Currently, the captains of National Eleven, National Women's Eleven and National Futsal Team are part of the board. "We need to know what's going on in the field", he said in an interview. The process of earning once more the trust of the fans is long and full of troubles, and the Federation does not expect it would be easy, but all the players already knew that. It was rumoured that some players would not participate in the national eleven because of the federation's mess, but after a round of visits, phone conversations and even messages via meep (biggest social network in Lisander) served, and Lisander comes with a strong team for the Independents Cup. Andreas Fox's team is based on the three best-placed teams in the last Premiership: AS Virtus 1904, Atlético Clube de Kasandora and Club Sparta.

To all this mood of dissatisfaction, promises and shaken confidence, add the fact that Lisander never won an Independents Cup game. In two editions, there were six games: Three draws and three losses.

It will be a very difficult tournament.

Neo hasn't produced new uniforms for Lisander. The Nation keeps the WC82 uniform, used in IAC 7. A new set of uniforms is expected for WC84.

Notes

After two years away from international soccer, Republican National Soccer Team, LLC reformed two years ago just as its owner and sole proprietor was awarded the title of Soccer General by Consul Kyle Bolton. Soccer General Rule Theriault held open tryouts throughout the FFR to find the best young soccer players and the hottest high school cheerleaders in the Federation and get them under contract to Republican National Soccer Team, LLC. After travelling across the Federation and holding 60 open tryouts, a total of 27 soccer players and 68 cheerleaders were selected for the team based on their performance, (in the case of the soccer players) game tape and discussions with their coaches. At this time, Theriault is unsure whether any of the players stand out above the rest but he is hopeful that they will be responsible to coaching from the first Soccer General in the history of the Free Republics and his legendary assistant manager Sir Koby Theodore, who shined so memorably in World Cups 68 and 71. While rumor has it that looks were a factor in selecting both the soccer team and the cheerleading squad, Soccer General Rule Theriault denies rumors that Nova Hellstrom-Hancock and Lucia Bolton had a role in selecting players for the soccer team, though he does admit that Sir Koby Theodore and Consul Kyle Bolton hand-picked the cheerleaders.

In the year since World Cup 78, the Free Republics fell into a civil war. Political tensions that had been brewing for a long time between the political mainstream and the progressive left finally boiled over at the Unite the Left rally in Goldberg, Nejax. The small college town, home to the University of Nejax, was the site of disturbing political violence as an extreme progressive ran over 5 people, including University of Nejax pitcher Jurgen Eberhardt, the ace of the school's baseball team. A wave of left-wing domestic terror followed, leading to the passage of the Stop Aggressive Violent Extremism (SAVE) Act which granted extraordinary powers to the Federation Investigation Bureau (FIB) to protect public safety. 32 Republics responded to this by seceding from the FFR to form the Confederacy of Leftist Republics, which quickly became a state sponsor of terror. In the months since, the Republican armed forces have lost battle after battle to the Confederates and the FFR has suffered from many acts of terror, some of which, such as the destruction of the entries into international tournaments of the National Baseball Team and the National Hockey Team have had serious repercussions for Republican international sports. Eventually, the Leftist Republics were defeated and their territory turned into extremist containment zones known as "Charter Societies" as part of an effort to end political extremism in the Free Republics.

As the civil war was going on within the Free Republics, the National Soccer Team somehow managed to qualify for the World Cup, shocking almost everybody throughout the multiverse. However, they did not lost all 3 of their group stage matches that year and very much looked like a fluke qualifier. Last year, the Republican National Team headed into the Independents Cup in Schottia last year, where they announced their return to respectability in international soccer by winning the tournament, albeit with a fairly controversial victory over Mercedini and a poor group stage performance along the way. Then, they managed to qualify for the World Cup again in rather ugly fashion, drawing their first 4 matches, going just 8-7-3 in qualifying and barely managing to finish 3rd in their group. After defeating Apox rather easily in a playoff, they proceeded to lose 2 more World Cup group stage matches before drawing Abanhfleft in a meaningless match on the final day. 2 years ago saw the Republican National Team pick up 3rd place finishes at the Independents Cup, Cup of Champions and World Cup, all of which were held on home soil. 2 years ago was disappointing with the Republicans going out during the group stage at both the Independents Cup and World Cup. Last year's Independents Cup saw the Republicans go out in the Quarterfinals against Kavagrad and the World Cup saw the Republicans introduce a new fight song, win their opening match against Mercedini convincingly and then proceed to lose 2 straight matches and go out again in the group stage.

“You could’ve just said ‘no’, isn’t it?”

She didn’t even look up from the dishes, nor alter the tune of her voice when she said it. If he hadn’t been paying attention to the words, it could have been something like ‘are we out of milk’. Gintaras paused, trying to look pensive through the window. The sight, another row of small houses, all with the exact same dimensions as theirs, didn’t exactly inspire. There were times when he wondered why he was together with her, but mostly he was puzzled why on earth his wife had not left him yet. Forty-eight years of age and still just a regular lieutenant. Any bit of ambition which had been held in his heart when he joined the Corps had been buried under layers of paperwork and apathy by now.

“It’s… An opportunity, no?”

He couldn’t even convince himself of the validity of that sentence, let alone the woman who loved him enough to accept his glaring flaws. If she would know that… Gintaras sighed. He mostly felt averse to going to that training pitch and acting like he knows what he does. Hopefully, Janis would take this up.

As if this were a bit of written fiction, the phone rang and within seconds, Gintaras heard the high-pitch voice of his assistant. There was something about Janis Starkovs which made him come across as an eternal second-in-line. Maybe it were the hunched shoulders, the uncertain glance, the little shrieks and his tendency to apologise for everything.
“So, yeah, sorry for bothering you on this hour, but the report I prepared on the Squorsh… Squol… Squornshelan Remnant States is finished.”
“Isn’t that West Sq…”
“Sorry to cut you short, but I wouldn’t do that, sir.”
“Ow, ok. What did you conclude?”
“They’re the top pick for good reason. We’ll need to stick close to Zoban Ajao, he’s a menace in attack and seems to be in form. And the experience of that back four, damn… Donnell really drilled them as a unit.”
“Donnell?”
“Oh, sorry - their manager, that is.”

Gintaras tried to suppress another sigh by squeeking his small eyes together. He probably should know those sort of things.

“But I think there’s an opportunity.”

Janis paused, quite possibly for dramatic effect.

“Their midfield is in rebuilding and I think we can play them apart. If Kronbergs and Pukitis can cause us to be in the majority in that section, we can put some pressure on them.”
“Cause we’ve already got Rudzitis and ahem… Ra…”
“Rusas, sir.”
“Right, right… Rumsas. So, with Rudzitis and Rumsas over there, we can challenge them. Sounds good.”
“Want me to set up a free-kick strategy, sir?”
“That’s good, Janis, please do so.”
“All right. See you at the airport tonight, sir.”

Within four hours, they would take off from the military airbase near Gropaja and by the morning, the team would land in Genève to stay close to the Stade de la Reformation. It was painful to realise that he didn’t know yet which man he would have to lead. Gintaras might be a lieutenant but he had never lead an actual operation before. He wondered for a second why he ever got promoted to that level, but well, he knew…

Sajnuran National Football Team

Sajnur returns for a third stab at the Independent Associations Championship, this time in the small alpine country of Recuecn. Having been eliminated in the Round of 12 in Drawkland despite topping Group F, Sajnur hopes to drill deeper into the knockout stages. However, Sajnur have been drawn against the Free Republics, who are the highest ranked team in the tournament, at 17th in the world, and made it to the quarter finals of the last IAC, and Bliuji, who were a formidable opponent against Sajnur in qualifying for the 83rd World Cup. The other teams in Group C are The Penguinland, a relatively experienced team that currently sits 143rd in the world, and two new nations in the Cybyl Tribe and the Dragons and Bronies.

Recuecn is a country of just over five million people and rugged, mountainous terrain, whose football team play in a defensive manner. This solid defence meant that even after a long absence from WCC sanctioned international football they finished third in IAC7 and made a shock appearance in the knockout stages of the 83rd World Cup, getting out of a group involving Qusmo, Eura, and the Holy Empire, all of whom are currently in the top 20 of the world rankings, with the hosts currently sitting 44th. In contrast to Recuecn's solidity, Sajnur will be hoping to wow the host fans with the national pastime of flamboyance while finding a good mix of possession control and quick attacks. Sajnur will once again be turning up in the Brusseldorfian red and purple kits introduced in the 75th Cup of Harmony.

An influential country in international affairs, the nation ranks as one of the most politically and socially free states in the multiverse. The nation is noted for having some of the most friendly, compassionate and brash people in the multiverse, who enjoy high rates of economic, scientific and cultural development. The nation is rated as one of the least corrupt and least authoritarian in the world, with low rates of ignorance, obesity, political apathy and preventable death.

Just like the history of the nation, the history of Omerican football has been rocky. The nation was one of fifty-six to début in Baptism of Fire 56, where the team made the knockout stage with an undefeated record before bowing out to Lons after extra time in the last 32. The Griffons subsequently floundered for several cycles, finishing below expectations in tournament after tournament and struggling to find their footing. But fortunes turned around during the Campionato Esportiva in the Sarian, where Omerica unexpectedly won their group and made the quarterfinals after defeating Yttribia. Despite falling to runners-up Nephara in a close match, the tournament marked a significant turn in fortunes: a bitter (and, to Osarians, infamous) third-place finish in the World Cup 73 qualifiers, two consecutive knockout stage qualifications and Round of 16 exits and—the nation’s crowning moment of glory—an upset qualification for World Cup 74, where the team scalped Flardania and nearly advanced to the knockout phase.

However, success proved short-lived. After boycotting CE XVI in Falatulu, the Omerican Football Federation found itself mired in a corruption and betting scandal. Combined with a riotous fanbase which had caused numerous bouts of destruction, the scandal dogged the team’s World Cup 75 qualifying campaign and ultimately brought the OFF to an untimely end, ordered dissolved by the Sessions Court of the Mespalia and liquidated to cover the fines issued to its executives. In the aftermath of the scandal, the republican football associations, which had predated and existed parallel to the OFF, formed the United Republican Soccer Federation to take over the OFF’s functions and opted to indefinitely pull Omerica from international competition. Half a decade later, a new national team emerged to contest the Independents Cup and, after much internal debate, the World Cup.

The early years of the newly-christened Incorrigibles were troubled, with celebrated manager Ryan Pritchard unable to create a solid foundation to rebuild on. Seeing his time and margin for error dwindling, he chose to throw in the towel, though his replacement’s reign turned out horrific. With the expectations of the nation lower than ever, an uncelebrated Anne-Sophie Groothuis was tasked with steadying the ship, but went above and beyond: besting the infamous Curse of Kilkenny, winning the United Republics a first major international title and coming closer than either of her predecessors to the World Cup finals. But after an underwhelming World Cup and Cup of Harmony campaign and fearing complacency ahead of the nation’s IAC title defence campaign, Groothuis has now chosen to cut her losses and get out while she’s ahead.

Former interim manager of the Incorrigibles after Christine Salmond’s forced resignation, Kostas comes back to the national team off a relatively successful stint at his hometown club Falcon United. True to his place a striker during his time in the Omerica shirt, Kostas is known for being a traditional, attack-oriented Omerican strategist, favouring the three-person attack which propelled Omerica up the ranks in the nation’s earliest international years. Hoping to place his woefully forgettable stint as interim manager behind him, Kostas’s régime sees a mass clear-out of old (and, more damningly, complacent) names, blending youth and experience for the former Omerican international’s first true outing as manager.

Omerica’s Next Top Manager: Anne-Sophie Groothuis shocks the football world by throwing in the towel

You’d think that taking home medals from a WCC-sanctioned tournament for the first time would be a moment to celebrate for us, but we are frankly taking home medals we do not deserve. We won bronze against the run of play at this Cup of Harmony, where you’d need both hands to count the number of times Omerica were almost eliminated. Consequently, no celebration on the pitch was had, with most of the players snatching the medals from the assorted dignitaries rather than having them hung around their necks. Even the players had to admit they sucked and were only gifted those medals by the grace of Margaret.

Despite the nominally good results—a first appearance in the qualifying playoffs in sixteen years and Omerica’s best-ever placing at the Cup of Harmony—this cycle was a treasure trove of pitiful results, awful performances and stale football. Drunk off a trophy win and complacent with their style of play, the Incorrigibles finished so well in spite of the bad game they’ve been playing; in a normal cycle, they would have been tossed in the trash heap of group stage éliminées, forgotten before the real test even began. The United Republican Soccer Federation had reckoned that Anne-Sophie Groothuis had to have been worth her salt in the wake of her triumph in Drawkland, but have woken up with egg on their faces instead.

To her credit, Groothuis realised that, even if the URSF or supporters may have disagreed, she had overstayed her welcome. Scratching beneath the surface of those nice results, the picture was grim: squandering a qualifying lead over Eraman, barely securing a win to leapfrog them on the last matchday, finishing as the third-worst team in the playoffs, scraping through the Cup of Harmony group stage at the last minute and narrowly avoiding disaster against Abanhfleft and Squornshelous.

“We played horrible football throughout the group stage and nearly flirted with disaster several times through the knockout stage. I think that, in part, comes down to myself,” Groothuis stated to open her post-game press conference. “We simply cannot sustain these kinds of performances and expect to continue progressing. I have therefore submitted my resignation to the URSF Executive Board and the Board have accepted it, so I will not be leading Omerica into the IAC.”

While stunning the press gallery, who were likely about to shower her with congratulations, this had been no surprise to the URSF. “This is not a decision I made lightly. At the end of the group stage, I penned a resignation letter and spoke with General Secretary [Jean-André] Simonetti,” Groothuis stated in response to a question. “He advised me to reconsider and so I kept hold of it until after our semifinal, when I officially sent it in to him.”

But despite a less-than-spectacular World Cup performance this time around, Anne-Sophie Groothuis will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by Incorrigibles supporters. Though having never led Omerica to the World Cup finals, Groothuis leaves the post as arguably the best manager Omerica has ever had, turning a team barely ranked inside the top hundred into a top-forty side with nearly double the ranking points, four sets of medals and a championship trophy. She leaves holding the records for most games contested (97) and most games won (46) by an Omerica manager; she comes second only to Ryan Pritchard for best win percentage (49.1% to 47.4%) and stands atop the table for best points per game average (1.64) of any Omerica manager.

The nation’s expectations had never been lower than when her predecessor Christine Salmond was forced out by an internal URSF revolt, but the national team have made leaps and bounds under the New East Fleming’s reign. Groothuis’s Omerica has recaptured the sense of attacking imagination that had been sadly lost under Pritchard and Salmond, dazzling the world with 179 goals. Omerica notched their first-ever wins over Barunia and Kita-Hinode, brought an end to the infamous Curse of Kilkenny and became true contenders for trophies and World Cup tickets once again. It is hard to imagine that in four years time, when the time comes to enshrine a second Omerican name into the World Cup Hall of Fame, the United Republican Soccer Federation would dare to not place her name alongside the likes of Simeone Di Bradini, Laborious Hawk and Jeremy Jaffacake.

To Groothuis’s credit, the fact that we are bemoaning this performance rather than celebrating it is a testament to how extensive and comprehensive Omerica’s recovery has been. We now have to make sure that the progress the Incorrigibles have made is safeguarded and that the team do not regress back to the doldrums of the pre-Groothuis URSF era. The next managerial appointment is crucial and the next Independents Cup is the first test of whether this recovery can be sustained.

One thing we know for certain, despite this lacklustre showing over the last twelve months, is that Groothuis is going out with her head held high: “I want to thank everyone who has made this possible. It has been the honour of my career to have been given this opportunity and I will cherish this time for the rest of my life. I want to thank the URSF and our incredible supporters, who have made these seven years a joy. I leave with no regrets and I wish my successor, whoever it may be, the best of luck.” ◇

We all know Bliuji has a really strong team, and we also know that I typed this definition while stoned. Bliuji having played awful in the world cup; are looking for the easy win against the penguin land. With and without Bliuji is going through a rough patch, although there players are flat out amazing its tough out there on the field. Off the field things look bright for them. They perform well in practice and get the job done. Staff does not have good expectations for them regardless. The team nerd is predicting a 5-0 win for Bliuji.

The Penguinland starting 11: ???????

For the last couple years now, excitement about soccer had been constantly growing. First, it was the creation of the new Ministry of Sport. Then the Reçuecian National League resumed play. Then, Reçueçn participated in its first international tournament in years: the seventh IAC. Next was a spectacular world cup qualifying campaign, and, can you believe it--the World Cup itself. Reçueçn went all the way to the knock-out rounds.

It had seemed at each step along the way that the the hype had reached its peak. Enthusiasm was at a constant fever pitch that somehow continued to mount. With the end of the world cup run, it seemed that an over-performing Reçueçn had reached the end of its streak. But then it was announced that the nation would be hosting the next edition of the IAC and things ratcheted up once more. Competing was very different from hosting. Now the fans would have games to follow even if the team was eliminated.

The first game would be taking place at the national stadium, of course. Reçueçn had been placed in the A1 spot for the draw, as was natural, and by chance their treatied ally Fujai had been drawn in the A6 spot. This meant that they'd be seeing familiar faces, at least politically and regionally, if not from a sporting context, for the opening day of the tournament.

In the stadium, the crowd was buzzing as the teams took the field. Firaut, the hometown hero, took his spot in goal to a roar of applause. Franky, with the ball ready and waiting for kick-off, was already showboating trying to get his fair share of attention, but there was too much going on for him to get himself noticed. Tremblay stood stolidly on the sidelines in the technical box, with his hands in his pockets, waiting for the whistle. Out of anyone in the stadium, he probably had the most pressure riding on his shoulders. After having done so well in the world cup, could he continue his streak? Only the game would show.
