"The Nordic Baseball team is set to begin another World Baseball Classic. Hopefully they can do better than they did last classic. Leif Holt hopes the change at hitting coach will produce more hits at the plate and more runs. This Classic will not be conducted the way it normally is conducted. Instead of groups this tournament will be done in something called a Casaren, which means that the team will not know who they are playing next. It should be interesting since the managers will not be able to plan and strategize for the opponent. The pairings, other than the first series are based on strength and records, which should lead to some good series'. The series consist of 2 home games and then 2 away. The Nordics first match up against unranked Terre Septentrionale."

Baseball (basebal) is an infrequently played sport in The Sarian, with Cricket (and, to a lesser extent, rounders) being the preferred bat-and-ball game. However, it has amassed a small cult following and the national game has expanded due to the Executive's Expanding Sports Programme (Uitbreidend sportprogramme). As such, a team has spent the past two bondjaars1 centrally contracted with the goal of taking part in The Union's first international competition. Originally consisting of forty individuals of both sexes, the programme has since expanded and plans for a professional league under the Sari League (Ligasaari) brand have gained pace. Thus, there has been increased pressure for the team to bring in large enough TV audiences for the plan to be seen as viable. None of the thirty person squad has ever played baseball professionally before, and expectations for success are accordingly low. However, the team are motivated and - with a bit of luck - anything could happen!

1 Due to the unusual orbit of the Sari home planet, the standard unit of measurement is the Bondjaar. This represents five-thousand hours and not a full orbit of a star.

To outsiders, names in The Sarian may appear slightly bizarre. Historically, a surname was linked to someone's place of birth thus the custom became to give children 'unique' names to distinguish them. Nowadays, a parent can select any surname they desire. This has created a mix of traditional Sari surnames (which can usually be distinguished through the v' or f'), names passed through families through generations or just about anything! However, the tradition of a 'unique' first name has largely survived and people are rarely referred to in reference to their surname.

Archbishop Stadium is the home stadium of the Londinium Capitols as well as the Nova Anglican national team. It is big and it plays big, with a serious nighttime marine layer, an enormous right-center gap known as "Triples Alley" and an imposing right field wall. It's not as hard on right-handed hitters, but is a fly ball pitcher's paradise. Many people are seen in the bay outside of the stadium attempting to catch home runs hit into the water or simply cruising the bay while enjoying the sound of the game on the radio.

RHP #44 Wyatt Templeton, 28 - 97 with run on the fastball, changeup and curveball with slider as the kill pitch
LHP #19 Dan Cunningham, 25 - knee-buckling curve is his best pitch, and he uses it often, cutter bores in on righties' hands at about 92, throws a slider and change to keep people off balance, impeccable control,
LHP #20 Erik Russell, 24 - big high leg kick messes with hitters, 90 MPH fastball is underwhelming, but he can cut, sink, and run it, along with a circle and a Vulcan change, knuckle curve and passable slider, you just never know what's coming

OF #25 Casey Wheeler, 29, (R/R) - late bloomer sticks with the NT, has become a consistently excellent player, .290/10/30 guy with amazing defensive versatility, which is why he'll start in LF most days and rotate with Moran occasionally
OF #35 Matthew Gilbert, 25, (S/L) - combines blazing speed with good range, a power bat, and a strong arm, still needs to boost his average and take a few more walks
OF #29 Jerome Duplantier, 24, (L/R) - strong right arm in right means runners don't challenge him, a launch angle revolutionized swing means he has 30 HR power, not super mobile and won't hit for much average
OF #24 Cliff Garner, 24, (L/L) - Garner is all about the three true outcomes (homers, walks, and strikeouts), poor range but good arm, not an awful LF, but he's here for his hit tool, mostly

Notes

After an embarrassing failure to even make the playoffs on home soil at WBC 42, the Republican National Baseball Team was completely revamped going into WBC 43. Republican National Baseball, LLC fired the entire coaching staff and carried on an extensive search to find a new manager. Eventually, they settled upon Kyle Thomas as the new manager. Thomas hired a completely new coaching staff, including former national team pitcher Aimone Cremonesi as the new pitching coach. The new coaching staff carried out an extensive scouting expedition to build a new team, eventually settling on a roster of 30, which was significantly smaller than previous Republican National Team rosters.

For the first time, the Free Republics sent a mixed-gender team to that WBC and the new women players made significant contributions to the team. The first woman selected to the team was Luana Cremonesi, the niece of the pitching coach. As a freshman, she won the closer job for the Nejax Horns, one of the elite college teams in the Free Republics and helped lead the team to a national championship by being virtually unhittable all season long. Honomi Kamei and Hollie Rogers started at shortstop and 3rd base, respectively. Kamei was the sole bright spot on a terrible Republica Vipers team, putting up numbers that would have likely won the MVP award on a better team. Hollie Rogers was the reigning RABL MVP after leading the Barkersville Titans to a surprise pennant (she has since won a second consecutive RABL MVP and led the Titans to another pennant). Teresa Mrazova's handling of the New City Time Bombs pitching staff was a major reason why the Time Bombs had won the XBL pennant, which won her a 3rd place finish in XBL Rookie of the Year voting. She served as Zac Gatehouse's personal catcher but otherwise backed up Brock Shield. Evelin Norberg and Julie Brodeur played key roles on a Petrograd Greed team that led the XBL in scoring but failed to repeat due to the implosion of their starting pitchers. Brodeur could fill in at any position in the event that a player is hurt or needs rest.

Kamei emerged as arguably the best player in the world with a dominant performance in WBC 43 and took another giant leap forward during the XBL season that saw her voted the unanimous MVP as she led a much better Republica Vipers team, including new signing Brock Shield, to a respectable 4th place finish. Kyle Thomas named Teresa Mrazova as the starting catcher for WBC 44 after she took the next step as a hitter during the XBL season, keeping the Time Bombs afloat in spite of Nicholas Fisher's down season. Taryn Russell takes Sheamus O'Connor's spot in the rotation while O'Connor remains on the roster as a long reliever in Leon Eichel's old spot. Eichel had an extremely bad season for the Oldston Arsonists at 39 and was dropped from the national team. Russell broke out for the Arsonists this year, emerging as the team's new ace. On the 5th matchday of this WBC's group stage, she will become the first female starting pitcher for the Republican National Team. The Republican rotation has been shuffled based on the results of last WBC and the recent domestic season. Namo Busque, who signed with the New City Time Bombs during the WBC, will now be the Republican National Team's ace while Gioacchino Arcuri, who was awarded the Platinum Arm award for best pitcher in the XBL, will start third because Kyle Thomas didn't want to start two lefties back-to-back. The fact that the two pitchers widely regarded as the best in the XBL would start against Liventia and Maklohi Vai, respectively, was surely just a coincidence.

After 2 WBCs of failing to return to the finals, even with the addition of pinch running specialist and Olympic 100 Meter Dash gold medalist Rene Jager during the WBC 45 playoffs, Kyle Thomas elected to retain the same roster for another WBC but shuffled the lineup a bit to reflect developments in domestic baseball. Ming Hsing replaced the aging Nemo Busque in the rotation, Kiyosumi Takeuchi replaced the aging Mario Rothschild as closer and Evelin Norberg won the starting job in left field after her breakout season for the Petrograd Greed (OOC: This resembles Christian Yelich's breakout in RL baseball last year). After several disappointing WBCs in a row, patience was running low among fans and the higher ups at Republican National Baseball, LLC. alike. Their hopes looked especially bleak when starting second baseman Ethan Joyner tore his ACL late in the group stage but Sarah Fuerst joined the team and played every bit like a younger version of Honami Kamei during their playoff run. Kyle Thomas abandoned the concept of a pitching rotation altogether during the WBC 46 playoffs, choosing to utilize openers for most games and to regularly change pitchers during games. This all paid off with a WBC title.

This year, Thomas has once again elected to keep the same team to defend their title at home but he has made a number of changes to the lineup to reflect developments in Republican domestic baseball. It has been a really eventful season in the X Baseball League as the Republica Vipers ran away with the league title after buying several national team stars during the off season. They broke the league record for wins in a campaign even after failing to convince Sarah Fuerst, who lives rent-free in Kamei's house, to drop out of the University of Republica. Instead, Fuerst led the Patriots to an RCAA title while maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average in her computer science program.

While the designated hitter Nicholas Fisher is a great hitter, he is absolutely awful in the field and thus will only be used as a pinch hitter in games where the designated hitter is not being used. Alexander Capon, who has replaced Fisher as the starting DH, is capable of playing the field and will sometimes play first base to give Oskar Bjorgum a day off from playing the field.

All of the players on the bench are likely to see playing time over the course of the WBC and Kyle Thomas will not hesitate to pull a pitcher who is obviously tired. Strategic substitutions and defensive shifts should be expected at appropriate times.

The various leagues in which these players compete domestically vary greatly in terms of caliber of play. The ENBL in Newmanistan is obviously vastly superior to any of the domestic leagues in the FFR but among those domestic leagues the XBL and the TPB are the best leagues with the RABL and SPBAA on a slightly lower tier. The RCAA is college baseball and therefore plays only a 60 game regular season with a much lower level of play.

The newly reunited Kingdom of Saintland sent a male team to WBC 43, the first time they had done so since WBC 31. Feministvs Sanctvsterra, which sponsored Sanctii National Baseball Teams for many years, is no more having been disbanded by order of King Paulus XVI. The son of King Andreas, King Paulus XVI ascended to the throne of East Saintland a few months prior to that WBC following his father's death from natural causes. Weeks later, King Petrus XX of West Saintland also died of natural causes, without a male heir. Although West Sanctii succession law had been changed to permit a female heir to ascend to the throne, Paulus XVI did not recognize the legitimacy of this law, choosing instead to recognize the old law under which he was the legitimate heir to the western throne. When the western prime minister refused to recognize Paulus's claim to the throne, his armies marched across the St. Paulus Wall and set out to claim his throne by force. Eventually, with covert assistance from the Salvation Circle, a secret front for the Church of Saintland that runs the Malifornia Charter Society in the Free Republics, he conquered West Saintland and claimed both thrones after his cousin "Queen" Gloria renounced her claim to the western throne.

In the weeks following his military triumph, King Paulus XVI decided to pursue his lifelong dream of playing in the World Baseball Classic, a tournament that a team from Saintland had not participated in since World Baseball Classic 40, prior to the second time warp. King Paulus selected 16 of the best male baseball players from Saintland to join him on this team. While most of the players are from the eastern portion, due to the Feministvs Sanctvsterra regime's policies that discriminated against male athletes, Andreas Volusenus and Lucas Flavia are from the western part of the Kingdom. King Paulus was hoping for success in the WBC in order to help heal the lingering division in Sanctii society and show the remaining followers of the goddess heresy that the God of their ancestors is real. However, they failed to make the playoffs in WBC 43 or 44 and did not enter WBC 45. At WBC 46, Saintland finally broke into the playoffs with a 17-13 record and were knocked out of the Round of 16 in 4 by The Sherpa Empire.

King Paulus XVI has a reputation as a dominant pitcher and hitter in Sanctii domestic baseball, who has led the league in wins on 10 occasions, ERA on 12 occasions, strikeouts pitched on 8 occasions, batting average on 6 occasions, home runs on 14 consecutive occasions and RBIs on 11 occasions. Although he is starting to show the signs of age, he remains one of the best pitchers and one of the best hitters in Saintland today and has been the MVP of East Saintland's league 15 times, which is more than twice as many MVP awards as any other Sanctii baseball player has ever won.

The Path to the Lights


A WBC Coverage By: Reynold L. Thorn


FREE REPUBLICS - Once more into the breach, the Thunder shall take to the international battlefield that is the diamonds that have been pruned, carefully cared for and prepared all across the various continent-spanning republics that form the constituents of the Free Republics, as more then three dozen countries and their associated teams, the best, brightest and most athletic of literal generations descends into their glorios metropolis's, eager to blast some moon-shots, defy gravity and paint corners better then any classic artist. That over-powering smell you can feel building in your nostrils, is not the smell of the destitute in the streets, no, it's the beginning of the Show, the Greatest Show; the 47th World Baseball Classic!

I'm Reynold Thorn, and I've been appointed by the ASBN to be your point of contact and main representative in all coverage of this most recent edition of the WBC, and provide you the most update coverage on the Thunder, their performances both on the team and individual levels and also how the greater picture across the whole Classic plays out. If you're concerned about me being some communications major scrub that knows nothing about baseball, jokes on you; I never graduated college, and I spent what time I should have there playing Quidditch, but never mind that.

For the Thunders first challenge, they're going to be playing as the home team in a series against a relatively new opponent to them, almost virtually unknown is Tornado Queendom, rumor is they have even less on tape and film about the players, their style of play or their standard set of tactics; I don't even know if they prefer small ball, the long ball, or if they can even distinguish between the two. However, lack of scouting information available should not allow the Thunder to get complacent, not for even one moment; they are only 4 ranks our junior in international rankings, and the Thunder's burgeodning habit of habitual under-performance must be completely eliminated, and there's nothing like making a statement by winning the first series; especially with this odd Casaran format where you won't know your next opponent until just before, it's going to require alot of new focus, and hard work from the whole team.

In light of that hard work, Aarron Cannon is going to be looking for alot of it to come from his three solid starters he's chosen to start these series; Ben Gibson will remain the top ace and do the first game, followed by Travis Killian and then he said the third game is a toss-up at the moment and remains undecided but I'm willing to bet he starts Shane Woodward, it would make the most sense. Robertson should be an great starter, but Woodward's abilities are questionable; yes, this will be his 7th classic, and he was a member of the debutante team, but there was reason Cannon left him off last Classic, a very poor domestic showing in the ABL. Granted, it seemingly lit a fire under him and he turned in a career-best season with that stupidly low .94 WHIP which was the lowest in the Royal Conference and only bested across the entire league by Robertson's own .82 WHIP. The thing that does greatly concern me is whether Woodward has enough velocity to remain relevant, his fire has seemingly diminished greatly from his high of a 97 mph fastball three years ago, to it just clocking around 91-93 these days. Granted, he still throws a very effective running fastball that he often using as 1-2 punch-out pitch, and his changeup command and movement is superb but whether it will be enough to remain elite when playing against international talent, that very much remains to be seen. With this Casaran format, there is no comfort of hiding in a easy group with maybe one, two or three competent teams and the rest just being cannon fodder (no pun intended), no, ideally this format will breed the most successful teams against each other, which only means the harder and better the Thunder perform, the greater the challenge.

If Woodward can translate his domestic performance into a similar success here in the Classic, then I have no doubt that, for once, pitching will not be an issue with this team. Both conference Pitchers of the Year, and Killian, Robertson, and Gibson are all either in their prime or maturing into it, and there are sure to be some bright years together if the proverbial engine can begin firing on time, and loudly. Speaking of that, if success is to be found, consistent and productive bats must be a thing, and frankly, relying on Tony Russell to bail you out just isn't feasible anymore; Christopher Rogers, John Neary, Green and Eaves all need to start contributing together, and not just play leapfrog off-nights; if the clutch, consistent power of Neary and Green can be backed by the absolute monster of a bat that Rogers can wield (120 hrs in the last two seasons for those that don't follow us back home), I think they will have the two elements they need to perform well, and accomplish many great things in this Classic. But as the saying goes, it is quite easy to get lost under the lights of it all.

VAUMORT - The first of no less then eight series is over, and the Thunder have managed to enter this Classic with a very punctuated and successful performance, getting a gentleman's sweep of the series by winning the first three out of four total games, only missing out on finishing the absolute sweep after failing to capitalize on a fantastic 8th and 9th inning performance in the final game, on Tornado's home stadium, that saw 4 walks and a hit but only one run was driven in after two big at-bats ended in strikeouts, a worrying development but they still kept the game close enough, and they won the series 3-1, so that should be celebrated. The conclusion of this series as the Warriors looking on the outside in, sitting at the 17th overall seed when 16 is the cutoff for playoffs but it is still very early, and naturally everything is still very close so we will need to let things shake out as they do over at least the next three or four series before a hard, serious judgement can be passed. However, with this format, it is becoming exceedingly clear that no chance can be squandered, every moment must be taken by the shoulders and seized if the Thunder wants to maximize their eventual, final outcome which hopefully lies in the Classic's playoff round.

All four games shared a common trait that is of a concerning note, but also might just be a sign of Cannon still getting a feel for his bullpen and roster management skills here with this particular roster, but the bullpen did perform less then superb; in the first game, Ben Gibson turned in a solid start by going 6.3 innings, with 3 earned runs, 5 hits, just 1 walk and 9 strikeouts; not without it's blemishes but by and far a quality start, both literally and figuratively however his bullpen replacement saw Cannon going to Mike Lighell, who still remains an UFA in the ABL one of the many puzzling cases when it comes to player holdouts and free agency in the nascent league; sure he got the save but he almost ruined Gibson's hard work and gave up two runs that had no business of being given up, and he started off so good to, so it was almost like a case of reverse rust came down on him. He finished off the last batter in the 7th with five pitches, finally getting the strikeout on a down and inside cutter, allowed just one hit in the 8th, but then slipped up and allowed 3 walks and then a outfield single that drove in a run; not the clean save at all, and maybe Cannon can be questioned by making him get a 7-out save which is a heavy workload for a closer, but that still shouldn't have been an excuse, Lighell needs to focus more and learn to shut the door firmly without allowing the wind to howl for so long.

Honestly, the one loss from this series in Game 4, I can be content with; Cannon proved my prediction right and turned to Shane Woodward, just for the fourth start and not the third, and honestly I think he performed almost as good as Robertson in the prior game; Robertson went 8 winnings, allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, while registering up 11 strikeouts in the Game 3 victory, while in comparison Woodward went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, allowed just 1 walk and registered 8 strikeouts. Personally, I'm happy with how he performed and even though he took the loss, I think it was a "good" one. It can keep him centered, but also give him enough positives to begin upgrading and honing his skills the deeper we get into this Classic, and honestly, I'm more angry at Dougherty and Lighell for allowing those last two runs, if they had proved lockdown and silenced the bats, it would have been a win for the Thunder, but alas, perfection isn't quite obtainable yet.

The Free Republican hosts did pretty quick turnaround, already announcing the match-ups for Series 2 and your Thunderheads have been drawn against Xanneria, which is immediately going to jump-start the entrance of exciting, and hopefully, dynamic baseball. Tornado was just something to get the pine warmed up, a feel for the diamond established, for Xanneria is going to be no pushover in anyway, we're going in as a 3-rank underdog, ever so slight, but still there. The series will happen concurrently with Series 1, so the four game bump will see Melody aka Francis Reed taking the hill in the first game, followed by Wayne McDonald and then perhaps Woodward again, or Killian, depending on how Cannon feels about his pitchers fatigue levels. Rosters from Xanneria have yet to have been disclosed, and their practices were kept private to the greater public so scouting information is once again kept to an absolute minimum, however focusing on the Thunder, it's going to need long, solid outings from Reed, McDonald and whomever follows those two, or the bullpenm is going to need to pick it up more when they're called on. Brad Green is going to need to stay hot, he batted an neat .540 for the whole first series and he was joined in high performance by Chris Rogers 3-bomb stat line from the final game, here's to hoping he can stay hot as we head into the next series.

Right after the fourth game of the Hapilopper/Kita-Hinode series
Darren Goodwin had just thrown the third strike low and inside to one of the top Hinodejin hitters, and Hapilopper had escaped with a 2-2 record against Kita-Hinode, in what was, to say the least, a frustrating series. There had been flashes of brilliance, like the HNBT’s five-run 1st inning to start the series, accompanied by a 12-strikeout gem from Charlton Forest, not to mention a three-run home run from Leroy Hunnisett in bottom of the 7th in the fourth game that turned things around for the Haps, and helped them split the series.

But there had been moments of frustration. In game two, a questionable call at home plate in the bottom of the 9th inning allowed Kita-Hinode to tie the game up. The left fielder from the Hinodejin team had fired a bullet to left field, and Dayton Rowe fielded it almost perfectly. He threw it to Jerome Hayden, the relay man, who fired it to catcher Mo Beverly, and it appeared to beat the Hinodejin runner to the plate… except the runner was called “safe.”

Sam Kitchens was ejected following a controversial

of game two of the Hapilopper/Kita-Hinode series.

While the fans in Kita-Hinode were delirious with joy, Sam Kitchens was delirious with rage, rushing out of the dugout to angrily tell the home plate umpire, using some unfortunately-undiplomatic language, that he had gotten the call incorrect, and in fact, the game should be over and Hapilopper should have won the game. Sam, unfortunately, used language that was too undiplomatic, and he got ejected from the game post-haste. After that game, which the Haps unfortunately lost 6-5 in 11 innings, Sam blamed the umpire for the team’s loss.

“That dude was blind as a bat,” Sam said, with an unusual tone of anger in his voice. “You know, his strike zone was all messed up. Some times, it was wide as an airport taxiway, and other times it was as narrow as a bicycle wheel. Maybe the time is right for computer umps or something. We can’t keep having things like this.”

There were other moments of frustration. Jordan Meadows, who days before had been admonished for dancing around pantsless in the HNBT clubhouse while the team was studying the Hinodejin team, found himself in the middle of a jam in the 7th and 8th innings, when he gave up four runs to give them the lead. Sure, he was a left-handed one-out guy, but he was being used as his brother Martin and Aaron Armstrong had seen a bit of work in the last game, and they were being rested.
When he got back to the dugout, Jordan was greeted by glares from his teammates, who were none too thrilled with his pitching performance, which had allowed for four runs and six hits in two innings.

Theoretically, the HNBT could have won each of its first four games, but questionable umpire calls and bad pitching stymied them in two of those games.
A few minutes after the game concluded, the team learned of their next opponent – South Covello, who, like the Haps, were 2-2 after their first series with St. Saratoga. It was possible that the next series with South Covello could be just as tough as the series with Kita-Hinode, but only time would tell.

The next morning, the HNBT convened at Capital Stadium, where it was freezing out. A few days before the first of two home games with the Hinodejins, this stadium had been covered in six inches of snow. A crew from the Hapilopper City Department of Transportation had come in, shoveled the white crap out, and got the old place ready for the two-game series. On this morning, there was frost everywhere, players could see their breaths and longer sleeves and long johns were the exception, not the rule. That wasn’t going to stop the HNBT from working to get ready.

Some of the team’s top hitters – Mo Beverly, Ethan Abbey, Leroy Hunnisett, Dayton Rowe and Jerome Hayden were taking batting practice. It was freezing out, so batted balls weren’t going to have the same kind of distance that they would during a typical 90 degree summer day in Hapilopper City. But they were still blasting balls long distances. There was a certain glee in their eyes. Sure, they had gone 2-2 when conceivably they should have gone 3-1 or 4-0. But there was still a lot of baseball to go.

Mo, Ethan and Leroy stood outside the batting cage as Jerome blasted pitch after pitch into the first and second deck at Capital Stadium. The three were talking about this “Casaran” style of opponent selection.

“Got to say, I’m trying to get used to it,” Ethan said. “How do they pick the opponents?”

“I guess they picked our first one at random and then go off records,” Leroy responded. “I kind of like it. I guess it means we’ll have to pay close attention to everyone, you know? Shit. Who do you think we’ll get next go-around?”

“Who knows,” Ethan responded. “Right now, my big thing is wanting to kick some South Covellan ass. I think we can do it, too.”

“Hell yeah,” Leroy said, looking back towards the dugout and manager Sam Kitchens and hitting coach Frank Jarrett, who were walking towards the batting cage. Both of them had been discussing the hitting during the last series, but needed to see something different.

“Alright, Gus, throw him some curveballs!” Sam shouted at the pitcher, Gus Alexander, whose job was to pitch during these sort of batting practice situations.

Gus started throwing some curveballs for Jerome, and unfortunately, he wasn’t having as much luck hitting as he was with the fastball.

“Shit,” Leroy said as Jerome whiffed on a couple of curveballs. “Just watch for your pitch and wait to hit it, Jerome!”

“God damn it, Leroy, I don’t need your help,” Jerome snapped. “I’m a professional just like you are. Just let me do my thing.”

Leroy slowly shook his head and walked away. It was obvious Jerome was going to need some help hitting the curveball. He motioned for Mo to come with him to find a way to help him out. The idea of getting a voodoo doll, putting it in Jerome’s locker and offering it a fine cigar and a bottle of rum was briefly considered, but was rejected by Mo as “too derivative.” Turns out it had been done 30 years before.

“Hmmm, maybe we could get a hold of Drake Stevenson and see if he has any ideas,” Mo said. “Do you have his phone number?”

“Uh, let me get in touch with my brother,” Leroy said. “My brother works with Drake’s brother on the soccer team, maybe we could play a little phone tag. Let me see what I can do.”

He began buying up theme parks, spending money to bring the citizens of West Phoenicia the best, dazzling, scary and heart pumping rides. He purchased the main Sea world in Jackson, and introduced West Phoenicians to new exhibits.

He invested millions into research and development and not only incorporated real life aquatic life but artificial intelligence in the forms of dolphins, whales, sharks and seals.
The Pièce de résistance was an exhibition known as Mermaid Cove. Four human looking robots three beautiful mermaids and one well built merman each with long mechanical fish tails.
The exhibit pushed attendance through the roof as citizens from near and far attended to see the four mer-people perform tricks in the main arena pool.

Winston Carmichael has now pioneered into a new venture. Moving away from robots and into the world of reality.
A makeshift city dubbed Sin Town, has been created, with buildings, shops, cafes and nightclubs.

Job seekers, those down on their luck or people simply wanting to make quick cash have flocked to the city to act as real life sims.
For A weekly fee of $500, citizens can rent a person to act a a sim for them,. Where everything but murder is sanctioned. The Project has been dubbed Another Life to Live and it is already showing to be popular with high revenue and over 1 million subscribers.

Human rights activists had critised the new venture as exploitation of the poor and those in need. Where the rich are once again taking advantage by.making people act out anything the subscriber desires.
Winston Carmichael has said the bulk of the people are doing the right thing and most of its harmless fun and flirtation, but there was a small amount of people using it in the wrong manner by abusing their purchased human Sim with excess drugs and alcohol, promiscuity and mild violence. Mr Carmichael believes in the long run this so be a win/win for all. And that he expects the majority or people to always act accordingly and humanely.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. A few figurines, half of them painted, that's pretty good. I forgot how bad my painting was back then. Takes me back!"

"Cast your eyes upon the glory, nearly lost to time itself, the holy rulebook! So, even with the DMing ('diamond master') I'm going to do, I didn't read the rulebook earlier. I played this until like three years ago, so I think I should still remember all the rules well enough. At least, the ones that are worth knowing. Player creation is not one of those things, because you do it once and then never touch that section of the rulebook again until you start a new game or continue on playing as a different player, god forbid. So, bear with me, for we'll be living on these pages for the next few weeks, or months. There's no watching the WBC without playing some DnD on the side!"

"Amen!"

"Do you all have your backstories written out?"

"Sure do!"

"Well... did I have to complete it before this session?"

"Would have been nice, would have been easier to tie in with character creation. Do you have any ideas at least as to what your character should do?"

"Yeah... I have some ideas. Gotta look at all the stats, skills and feats to make my mind up. I think I know what stat I want to max."

"Alright then, that should work out. Have you ever seen a DnD character sheet before?"

"Nah..."

"Years ago, but yes, I have."

"Alright, we can work with that. So the reason we've started earlier is that it probably takes us about an hour to create a character. For some reason, it's really hard to do in under that time, and then we should be ready to roll around the time the game starts. First of all, take these..."

"Just so you know what everything on here means: Everything above the first line is your character details. Name, place of birth, for representative match purposes, and age. Instead of levels like in other RPGs, this game uses Age. You get better with Age, depending on level of play and other lucky breaks, and so Age is what says how much your character improves. Of course, some stats decline from a certain Age. In other games, stats only go up, but in DHs and Diamonds, some stats may decline, but you can make it worth your while. Spoilers: the speed stat goes down significantly after a while, and durability, hitting, throwing, and catching stop going up after a while too, and the rest keeps increasing. Anyway. Next up is position, and your character always starts out with one of four positions: OutField, InField, Pitcher, or Catcher. You specialise as the game rolls on, so if you choose pitcher now, you'll get the chance to become a starting pitcher, or middle reliever, or closer, or whatever, later. It doesn't really matter what you choose for Handedness, it's only used in at bats. For pitchers, this is a big choice, but eventually it doesn't matter depending on what the batters you face's Handedness are. Now, Class and Role. They feel very similar, but Role is the type of player you develop into, like middle relief, left fielder, first baseman and so on, and Class is the kind of player you are. Class is directly tied to your position. As an outfielder, you can become a Speed Demon, a Contact Hitter, a Power Hitter, or a Defensive Hero, for instance. So you could choose Outfield for your Position, choose Speed Demon as your Class, and Centre fielder as your Role, but we'll get to that as the game rolls on. I'm skipping Team for now, I want both of you playing on the same team and we're starting out in a small Rookie League I've conjured up, so you can choose together later. Money and Sponsors are self-explanatory, and both are 0 right now. With me so far?"

"Yeah... I think"

"Sounds good so far."

"Ok, then the most important stats are between the horizontal lines. These are Hitting, Throwing, Catching, Durability, Speed, Intelligence, Charisma, and Luck. The first three are obvious, they come into play on the field and are very tied to your position. You don't need a lot of hitting as a pitcher, but you do need throwing, catching and hitting when you play infield for instance. Speed appears everywhere, from baserunning to getting to a ball, and whatnot. Durability just says how many games you can play a year, how much recovery time you need as a starting pitcher, but it also influences how much better or worse you become as a single ball game goes on. After every inning, players lose one Durability temporarily, and you start making mistakes the lower your Durability is. The last three are used for all kinds of off-the-ball checks, from rerolling failed dice, to whether your teammates listen to you. These can be sneaky helpful and are used all over the place, to see if you've spotted something before the opposition has."

"Yeah! That's it, I want to play a very high Luck-based character. I was just waiting to see if it was a stat that was in the game."

"You can, if you really want to. Luck-based characters are some of the most broken ones out there, ranging from the most unlucky backup to the best player the game has ever seen. Proceed at your own risk! So, beneath that the sheet has the Skills on the left, and Feats on the right. Skills are always based on a Stat. So Baserunning has (S) in front of it, so that's tied to Speed. Contact hitting and power hitting have an (H) for hitting. Communication has a (C) for Charisma, not for Catching. And Feats are all other skills that your character can learn. Feats always have two levels. Just writing down a Feat means you've learned the basic Feat, and putting a star or any other mark after it means you've Mastered that Feat, making it even more powerful. As we're going to play in a Ko-orenite league and you are both playing Ko-orenite characters, I've already given you the basic Multilingual Feat. Be on the lookout for fun Feats because those are what makes your character stand out from the crowd. Everyone can be a high Power Hitting and high Hitting player, but Feats really give a player its own feeling. For instance, normally the Focus Skill uses Intelligence, because it has the (I) in front of it. There's a Feat that makes Focus use Durability instead of Intelligence. Mastering that Feat makes Focus use both Durability and Intelligence, to make it even more powerful. Get it?"

"I think I'm going to need a refresher course every now and again on this one..."

"I have to say that I don't remember this bit too clearly either."

"It becomes easier after you go through the motions a little. Before long you know exactly how to use Stats, Skills and Feats and how they work between each other. It's a really neat system, once you get down to it. Oh, and on the back of the sheet, you can mark the number of games you've played, and other statistics like 1B, 2B, 3B and HRs, strikeouts, and other achievements. I don't recommend calculating percentages and stuff because those change a lot, all the time. I recommend just writing down the countable achievements. And with that, I'm done talking, and I want to hear your characters!"

"Cool! So, we start out with Basic Multilingual. What does it do?"

"So Basic Multilingual gives you the ability to speak a second language well, and understand a third language passively."

"And Master Multilingual?"

"Speaking a third language well, and understand a fourth one passively. After that, you only need to spend a year in a certain area to understand their language passively as well, which stacks up to like six or seven passively understood languages."

"Ok, right."

"Can I start?"

A group of Nazi bureaucrats were gathered in the garden of the Chancellery. Their serious faces, their sharp black and gray uniforms, and the stark architecture of the Chancellery looked out of place against the bright colors of the natural world. The sky glowed with bright swirls of orange, pink, purple, and gold; fruit trees bore fruit of a hundred colors; flowering shrubs towered above the bureaucrats' heads; tropical ferns with striped leaves brushed against their polished leather boots; chameleons hung on the trunks of the trees; brightly plumed birds perched in the bushes; butterflies fluttered around the flowers; and porcupines with long rainbow colored quills ambled along the garden paths. Somewhere in the background, the splashing of a fountain could be heard. The Minister for Sport looked nervous.

The opening game of the World Baseball Classic had gone well. The Liventians got a warm welcome with gifts of wine and fruit baskets, but they didn't get a win. It was a close game which ended with an RBI double from Jodl in the bottom of the 9th.

Since then it had not gone so well. The Nazis had lost the next three games, and now the other bureaucrats were questioning the Minister of Sport as to why he had entered an international baseball tournament when baseball was not the Reich's best sport. "How are we supposed to show the world the superiority of National Socialism if we are losing?" the Minister of Propaganda asked.

"We should be preparing for the World Cup instead of wasting our time on this baseball stuff," one of the Propaganda Minister's aides added. "Everyone knows we are better at soccer than baseball."

"Baseball is a sport invented by mongrel races," the head of the SS said. (He would not have said anything like this if the Nazis were winning. It was just an excuse because he was being a sore loser.)

"You shouldn't have let the Women's Front talk you into fielding a team of women," an army officer chimed in.

"It is only three games," the Minister for Sport insisted. "There is still time to turn it around. We will do better against Greater Cebu."

In game 4 of the World Baseball Classic, the Sherpa Empire was hosting the team from Nooooooooooooooo at Chengdu's modernistic multi-use stadium. Jian Zhang pitched well for the first 6 innings, but he started getting a little wonky in the 7th, being less precise with the placement of his pitches. He gave up a walk and a couple of hits, and a run scored before he managed to get out of the inning. The sound of drums and gongs rang through the air as everyone stood up for the 7th inning stretch. Chinese opera dancers in masks and colorful silk costumes flitted across the dugouts, and acted out a skit about a love triangle in stylized dance moves and sing-song voices. Wangchu Namkha Qiang led off the bottom of the inning by whiffing a couple times and then hitting the ball into the 3rd baseman's glove. The net two batters weren't much better, and the bottom of the inning didn't last very long. As Gurung fumbled around with his bat, Sarang Oli asked Zhang how he was feeling. Could he pitch the 8th or was it time to go to the bullpen? Zhang wanted to stay in, and he persuaded Oli to allow it. This proved to be a mistake and before long the bases were loaded. Oli was annoyed. He slogged out to the mound and held out his hand for Zhang to give him the ball. "You've done your part. Let Fang take it from here."

Fang struck out the next two batters, and the third one hit a pop fly that went high in the air, but didn't travel very far. It came down near the pitcher's mound, where Fang caught it to end the inning and preserve the Sherpas' 4-3 lead. They picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th when Le pinch hit for Fang and knocked a fastball into the outfield seats. (Nobody ever let Fang bat because his batting average and his choice of batting music were both cringeworthy.) Le's homer was the last run of the game, and the Sherpas won 5-3.

After the game, Changyi Ihawa, who had recently landed a job as an SISN broadcaster, came down to the dugout looking for interviews. Le, Zhang, and Bharadhwaj had already gone into the clubhouse and were avoiding reporters. Qureshi, an up-and-coming player who had been part of a 2-run rally in the 4th inning, talked to her briefly. He said it was a real honor to play in the WBC and he was happy with how well he'd been hitting. Changyi thanked him for his time and wished him luck in the next game, and they wrapped up the interview. She looked around to see if there was anyone else she could talk to and her eyes met Fang's. He had not disappeared into the showers yet because he was signing autographs and talking to a family that had brought some really cute little kids to the ballpark. The father was telling a chubby little boy who Lakpa Fang was, explaining that he was Sichuanese and he had started his career in Chengdu before moving on to play for Guilin and the national team. Fang told them he still had friends and relatives in Sichuan Territory and he still liked playing in Chengdu. In fact, he was planning to go out for a big family dinner later with his relatives that still lived in Sichuan. He lost his train of thought and trailed off when he noticed Changyi looking his way. There was something more than professional interest in that look. They were attracted to each other. It would be right for anything to happen between them, but the attraction was still there.

Changyi asked Fang is she could interview him and he said yes. They talked about the game, about how Fang had helped the team out of a jam today. Then a few questions looking at the bigger picture -- the Casaran format, the fact the Sherpas were undefeated so far, what to expect in the next few games. Changyi also asked him about the religious protests in Hampton Island. "You're friends with Kai Qiang; do you have anything you'd like to say to the protesters or the Stafford City management?"

"I think they're just jealous because Qiang is better than their drivers," Fang said.

It was not the greatest of seasons for me. Everything began so well, winning 11 of my first 12 starts, with a no-decision in the other. Thirteen, however, would prove to be unlikely for me as I pitched against Starksville. We were down 1-0 in the 6th, and I was engaged in a good pitching duel against a 19-year old prospect named Breanna Mueller, who perhaps might see the national team one day. On my follow through, something gave way in my ankle, causing me to fall over and be in pain. By the time I wanted to try and get up, the training staff was out there, and there would no way that I would continue. I had never had a serious injury in my career, so when I was sent in for x-rays, I was expecting everything to be fine, and maybe I would miss a start or two, but it would be nothing more serious. It would turn out to be a high angle sprain, and I would end up missing three months of the season. Towards the end of the year, I was able to get into some games, but it was ruined year.

The hardest part of missing time with an injury is obviously not being out there, but there is more to that, as you feel you are letting my teammates down. They were supportive, but that did not make things much easier. We had many injuries as a team during the season, but somehow we kept finding ways to win, with players that were afterthoughts in the minors stepping up to the big leagues and doing the little things that were necessary to keep up afloat. During this time, and especially within my rehab period, I would try to make myself more accessible to fans, getting to know more of them, and spending time with young players. At least I had that going for me.

With the domestic season being a disappointment, I am happy that this is a year for the World Baseball Classic. The format is a different, but all I know is that I am going to go out there and play against who they tell me to, and where they tell me to do it. My debut for the Classic for the Fillies was against Volinovia, on the road. We took the opener of the series, 8-4, and now it was time for me to go out there. After striking out the side in the first inning, my confidence and hunger could not have been any greater, and as I continued to shut them down, I could see my teammates getting more excited for me. As I took to the mound in the seventh inning, I looked out on the scoreboard, but I knew what was going on. You don’t want to think about the perfect game, but I had one up to that point. I have never had one in my professional career, though did in high school. I have been fortunate enough to have thrown a no-hitter professionally. Getting out of the seventh with it still in tact, I could see my teammates giving me that look, as if they wondered if they should say something about it. I could only wink back. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be, as after getting the leadoff batter out, they blooped a single into left center. Frustration for a brief moment, but I have far bigger frustrations this year. Getting the next batter to ground into a 4-6-3 double play made it a lot better. I’ll take the one hitter, but most importantly, I will take the victory!

ROCKETS SWEEP AWAY BLIUJI

Newmanistan welcomed Bliuji to the World Baseball Classic by sweeping the four game series, putting them amongst a group of teams with a 4-0 record. Now, with the way the Caesaran works, the Rockets will have to play another of the 4-0 teams and this is where I start to have concerns about the format possibly having a snowball effect if the draws keep working against teams. That said, I would rather be in the group of 4-0 teams, then sitting with the 3-1 and 2-2 teams right now. Abanhfleft will be next, a team that has had their moments in this competition, but would really like to have some sustained consistency. The Fleftics are certainly off to a good start here as they swept Aeprelh. What is with the names of some of these nations? Anyway, the Newmanistanian games move to Jessicavile, to be played at Empress Jessica I Stadium. Let’s recap the open games!

It all started in the nation of Bliuji, with Hannah Lee on the mound for the sky blue. The dominant pitcher who hopes to win her third World Baseball Classic ring is now 33 years of age and while she could have one more Classic left after this, you never really know with pitchers. On this day, she shut down the home team, tossing a nine inning complete game shutout, no better way for a team from Newmanistan to be starting a tournament, now is there? Lee fanned 14 while scattering three hits. The Rockets did not score either through the first eight innings, leaving a total of 12 players on base over that period, including eight in scoring position. If this game were at home, the boobirds would have been out over the lack of clutch hitting. Thankfully, a solo home run by Joanne Collins just cleared the left field fence in the ninth, giving us the 1-0 win.

Cassie Burke took to the mound in the second game and went eight innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Unlike Lee, she would be given run support and left with Rockets in front by the score 9-3. Newmanistan was better with runners in scoring position this time, going 5-for-9 overall in the situation. Mikayla Larson had the big hit in the fourth, a 2-run double with two-outs, that at the time made it 4-0. Newmanistan added five more in the sixth, with Lori Brewster having the big hit, a three-run homer to right center that put the game away. Morgan Timmerman pitched the ninth, allowing one run.

For the third game, Newmanistan hoped to keep things rolling with Madison Sullivan on the mound, but she had control problems early on. In the first, two walks followed by a single led to one run, and then an inning later, a batter that Sullivan hit (and had to leave the game), saw their replacement player end up scoring. I wish I could tell you who these players were by the way, but a roster has not been provided by the home team. For the first game being played in Newmanistan for the Classic, this was a rather ominous way to begin things, but the Rockets scored in the first on a Sydney Hassler single, bringing in Katie McCreary, who had singled and stolen second; and then added on more in the third when McCreary laced a double down the right field line, scoring Ashley Sorenson, who had singled and stolen second. Joanne Collins put Newmanistan in front 3-2 in the fourth, and it did seem like Sullivan had settled in. Unfortunately, she would surrender a tying run, and that was the end of her day. Alyssa Wolcott pitched the 7th and Brittany Overton the 8th, the latter of which would be the winning pitcher thanks to a Kaylee Vickers RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. Katrina Payne pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

In the fourth game, Newmanistan got an encouraging start from Paige Norwood, who debuted during the last Classic, and had some inconsistent moments. After a great year with North Charlotte, there is hope that she might be about to have a big performance in this tournament, and in her first game, she started out the right way, with a complete game shutout of her own. She allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out nine en route to the win, and got five runs of support to back her up. With the bat, Stephanie Reynolds picked up 3 RBI’s to lead the way. Overall, fans must be thrilled with four wins and two by complete game shutout. Things will be much more difficult against the likes of Abanhfleft. Now is when we will begin see if the Casaran format is a good thing as matchups are created based on records. All the Rockets can do is take care of themselves.

"Another season of baseball is upon us," Anne- Marie Prosper thought, a small sigh exhaling from her painted lips. A smile fixated onto her face, she struggled to pay attention to the conversation swirling around.

Another press conference, another attempt to thrust the nation's success to West Phoenicia and the world.

As dutiful wife of Jacob Prosper; Manager and owner of the West Phoenician Confederates. It was her duty to attend every game, applaud every run and stomp and jump to her feet when a home run sailed through the air

A United family front, her children were hovering over the banquet table. Her eldest daughter was making eyes at one of the team's pitchers.

But they too were always in attendance. it would be disrespectful if the owners own family didn't come out in support of the Confederates baseball team.
A team that had made leaps and bounds in the last few years.

Anne-Marie was proud, the team had struggled as it slowly raised the ranks. There best season had been the World Baseball Classic #44 first place. She still recalled the two week long parties in celebrations.
West Phoenicia were no longer just the underdogs hungry for a win. They were important now.

It had its benefits too, while attending every match could look repetitive and soul draining especially if the game was played at a snail's pace, where each team failed to score more than one run.
The opposite could be just as boring, there was no fun if one team was massacring the other. Especially if it was West Phoenicia losing by a large margin, she wouldn't hear the end of it for days. Her husband would go through a series of all familiar phases, denial, ranting, blame, improvement than acceptance. She had learnt a few glasses of white wine and a valium helped her get through those phases. She had the appearance of being supportive but her mind was off to better places.

Game 4 against Kita-Hinode were the types of games she enjoyed coming out to support. The games where you couldn't guess who would be the victor as both teams played exceptionally well. Those with a types of games that got her blood pumping that had her on her feet cheering not out of duty as a team manager's wife, but for love the sport.

Those were the days valium were not needed. The other benefits that had befallen the team lately was the support of the West Phoenician royal family, especially from Empress Cleopatra-Olympias who was now patron saint of the team.
Never in her wildest dreams would she ever had thought that she would one day be rubbing shoulders the best of West Phoenician Society. Her deceased parents would be so proud.

The status as the managers wife allowed her that opportunity and that was another reason to be proud of the hard work that her husband's baseball team has produced, she knew she had nothing to complain about.

So even though at times she wished she was elsewhere, she would need to wait until the season was over. If the Confederates at least made quarter-finals her husband had promised her a holiday of her choosing.
The room of fans and reporters started to applaud. Anne-Marie realised that the husband Jacob had finished his speech. The second series was hailed a success,three wins vs one loss againstKita-Hinode.

The next team they would face would be The Equestrian States. It was a team she actually liked, they were very friendly and play a great game of baseball and were not full of themselves.
There were teams in the league she disliked and hopefully when the time came to come against them West Phoenicia would prevail and drive a nail in their coffin and send them home.
Anne-Marie smiled, moving closer to our husbands as reporter called for a family photo.

Strong pitching staff the highlight of undefeated start to the Casaran Classic for Banija

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- The 47th World Baseball Classic is now well underway, with teams having just undergone their second series. The new format has fascinated and captivated fans within Banija, and commercially at least, although we're just one quarter of the way through the Casaran stages of this tournament, this has been an absolutely fantastic tournament for the Banijans. There were worries coming into the tournament about how Banija would do. Would the delay in the establishment of professional baseball within Banija hurt the team's performance heading into this Casaran classic? And if anything, this classic, moreso than other classics due to its format, would be that much tougher. Playing teams of generally equal strength throughout the entire Casaran stages, that means there would be no games off. All 25 men on this team would have to be able to maintain energy and focus, and while they got to play an unranked Chromatika side, who were all college kids, in the first series, sweeping the Chromatiks by a score of 4 games to zero, the opponent they were rewarded with remained a big time challenge- none other than Drawkland.

Drawkland has gotten in the way of Banijan title chases in more than a few sports. There have been three times that the Banijans and Drawkland have met in the knockout stages of the World Bowl, and that has not gone so well for the Banijans. Two semifinal losses to Drawkland, once in World Bowl XXX and the other in World Bowl XXXVI, show the start of the general sporting rivalry between Drawkland and Banija. But it does not end there. They have been eliminated by Drawkland twice from the International Basketball Championships, once in IBC 25 on home soil, after the Banijans had an undefeated 10-0 group stage, only to lose in the 1st round of the knockouts. And in the very next tournament as well, it would be the giants from Drawkland, once again, who felled the Banijans. Of course, in IBC 24, it was the Banijans who were laughing in that rivalry, when we eliminated Drawkland. And then, of course, the last NSCAA championships, when Sadeg State University felled the University of Moravica in the NSCAA championship game in Newmanistan. These two countries meet at the highest levels in multiple sports, and seemingly, each time it seems as if Drawkland comes on top. It is an underrated rivalry. Of course, incredibly, our two nations have never once met on a soccer pitch, and we imagine that could really spark the sporting rivalry, couldn't it?

So when Drawkland was announced as the opponent for the next series in the Casaran Classic, there was, of course, plenty of excitement in Istria. That led to the home part of the series being sold out. Of course, the drum cadences and pep bands you get when Drawkland sports teams travel anywhere is always entertaining. It would only make sense that Drawkland and Banija get drawn with each other, and the stakes, although we are early in the Casaran stages, ensure that this series had a big game feel- both teams finished their opening series unscathed, with Drawkland completing a four game sweep of Joshenia, while the Banijans completed a four game sweep of fellow Atlantian Oceania nation Chromatika. And with both teams undefeated after four games, that meant there would palpable excitement when these two teams opened their four game set in Istria. And there was! With Drawkland's drum cadences filling the air, and a sea of orange in the stands and around the stadium, the home set of this series was always going to be quite entertaining.

It would be Ensa Suso, the 21 year old Kizza I College standout, who would take the mound in Game 1 against Drawkland. The youngster put on quite the exhilitarting performance. He, of course, ran into some early trouble. He, after striking out Drawkland's leadoff hitter, allowed the next three runners on base. Roger Madison singled on the next at-bat, and then Taylor Smart singled following to put runners on the corners in the top of the 1st, with only one out gone. Ensa Suso seemed nervous, and threw three straight balls to give Abram Kavana, Drawkland's cleanup hitter, a 3-0 hitters count. While threw a strike on the next pitch, he missed again on the following, a 5 pitch walk to allow a third straight base runner and load the bases, with just one out. The youngster was struggling. But after a visit from Yakuba Borussa, the pitching coach, to calm him down, and some crowd support from the home fans, Ensa Suso seemed to have got it together. He came back at a slower pace, attacking Franky Jones, the Designated Hitter. After working a 2-2 count, he forced Jones to fight off an inside fastball that went on a one hop directly to the second baseman. It was an easy 4-6-3 double play, as the Mansaré twins did their job in the middle of the Banijan infield, to get them out of the inning.

Ensa Suso was clearly havign problems, however, settling into this game. He walked Chan Ford to start the 2nd inning, and then, on the very first pitch to the next batter, he served up a breaking ball that hung over the heart of the plate. And Mark Fields crushed the baseball. In most ballparks, that would have been a home run- but it is 440 feet to straightaway center at Istria City Baseball Diamond. Still, it went well over the head of Banijan center fielder Duwa Sohna. A standup triple for the first baseman, and an early 1-0 lead for the Base Corps of Drawkland. However, after that first one, for whatever reason, the nerves from Ensa Suso seemed to go away. Some people just need to be able to flip the switch, and Suso did just that for the Banijans. Even though there was a runner on 3rd base, he managed to strand the runner there. Forcing a popup from the next batter, then striking out the following batter who had been trying to bunt Fields home, and then, with 2 outs, forcing a groundout to the first baseman allowed the Banijans to escape the inning with limited damage. Suso really settled into his groove there. He ended up pitching 6.1 innings total, and allowed just 1 more hit and one more walk after the second inning.

Now, of course, we know how well the pitching staff did. How did the offense do in the 1st game of this 4 game set? While they went down 1-2-3 in the 1st inning, they showed signs of life in the 2nd inning, trying to support Ensa Suso. And that is exactly what they did. The Banijan batters came up to the plate, and starting with the cleanup hitter, Yakuba Kah, went to work on Andrew Tyler. Yakuba Kah hit a double down the right field line to start the inning, with the ball lining hard down the right field line, but bouncing off the wall as Yakuba Kah just barely missed putting the tying run over the fence. But he was just the leadoff hitter- a rally was imminent, and this would just be the start of it. Cyper Kandeh singled as the next batter, putting men on 1st and 3rd with nobody out, and that brought up Banija's Designated Hitter, Lama Ouattara. The Banijans seemed to have momentum, and Ouattara stepped up to take advantage of it. He blasted the ball towards the gap in left center field, and Yakuba Kah scored standing up. Cyper Kandeh was hustling around from first base, and he was waved home by the third base coach. The relay went in, but a great slide by Kandeh saw him avoid the tag and give the Banijans an early 2-1 lead, as Ouattara stood at 2nd base, celebrating his double. He eventually scored as well, to make the score 3-1, and that was the score at the end of the inning. As Banija's pitching went back to its dominant ways, the Banijans scored two more times, ending the game 5-1.

Assan Condé, Banija's veteran ace, got the start and the win in Game 2 of this series, allowing four earned runs in 6 and 2/3s innings pitched. But it would be the series return to Drawkland that made things really crazy. Banta Jawara, Banija's #2 starter who has all the qualities of an ace in his own right, after starting the classic so well in his tournament debut against Chromatika, with 7 innings of shutout baseball against them, did not do so hot in Game 2 of this series. He was chased after allowing 5 earned runs in just 3.1 innings, forcing Ousman Kakay to reach into the bullpen early and often in their first game at HCN Field in Drawk City. Even though they were down 5-1 after the fourth, the Banijan bats woke up after that, scoring 3 runs each in the 5th and 6th innings, followed by 2 runs each in the 7th and 8th innings, to have a wild 11-7 victory over Drawkland, where they used 5 different pitchers out of the bullpen. With Banijan arms tiring, they needed a stud performance from Duta Condé in Game 4 of this series, and they got one. Duta Condé pitched 8 shutout innings, while closer Demba Baturu, the only reliever who didn't pitch the day before, got the final three outs.

That puts the Banijans at 8-0, and puts them, most importantly at the top of the table in the WBC standings. Of course, it is still early, and with three quarters of games left, there is plenty of time for them to be moved from that spot. But know this- those 8 wins will help Banija make the knockout stages. The top 16 of the overall table make the knockout stages, but the knockout stages are not promised to anybody. Not only that, the Casaran Classic uses non-traditional tiebreakers- Strength of Victory is the first tiebreaker, and strength of schedule is the second, with run differential being third. You gotta get wins, adn being at the top of the table means that you'll continue to play the toughest opponents. So every win counts in terms of getting into that top 16, and Strength of Victory and other factors can help you continue to climb that table within the top 16, to get as high as a seed as you possibly can.

What is the reason that Banija is here? It is not because of it's record-breaking offense- we don't have one. We aren't hitting records amounts of dingers, or hitting balls 460 feet away from home plate. No, the Banijan team has had success so early in this tournament because, outside of Game 3 of the Drawkland series, Banija's starting pitching has been dominant. Banija's starting pitchers have put in 6 quality starts in this classic so far, defined as 6.0 or more innings allowing 3 or less earned runs. And even in one of those two where we didn't have a quality, Assan Condé still got 6 and 2/3s innings under his belt and allowed four earned runs, staying in just one batter too long and allowing a long two run home run. Even still, he was able to earn the win, as the bullpen slammed the door shut behind him. The team has a total ERA of 2.25 across the entire pitching staff, and if you take out the wild 11-7 victory over Drawkland, it falls all the way down to 1.57. Banija's starters are pitching well deep into games, even doing well going through lineups for the third time. That's allowing the bullpen to stay fresh, where even when you have games like Game 3 of the Drawkland series, where Jawara was chased early, Kakay is able to cycle through his bullpen, as they combined to allow just 2 runs over the final 5 and 2/3s innings of that game.

That has vaulted the Banijans to the top of the table, so early in the Casaran stages of this World Baseball Classic. Who does that leave them to face? None other than the undefeated defending champions, and host of the knockout stages of this tournament, the Free Republics. This will be a banger of a matchup. The top two, face to face, between two teams that are billed to make deep runs this year in the Free Republics. They, of course, were famous during their championship run last time around for using openers instead of standard starters, a new age concept, that clearly worked for them as they brought home a trophy. It does not seem as if they will use the concept for the group stages of this tournament, but it is a fundamentally different style of baseball than what Ousman Kakay would use. But give credit to Republican manager for his innovations- he pulled out all the stops, doing whatever it took for his team to win, and they ended up winning the biggest prize the sport has to offer.

So it'll be an entertaining matchup. The tournament's top pitching staff against the defending champs. Ousman Kakay, still earning his chops in this sport, against the man that many consider to be the sport's top manager, Kyle Thomas. A Banijan team who were considered upstarts just last tournament, who are now trying to showcase their arrival among the sport's best teams, and prove last year's run was not a fluke, but the start of something new. This is a measuring stick against a proven opponent that is playing elite baseball right now, and everyone knows that. Even ask Ousman Kakay. "Our pitchers have been lights out, up and down the staff." Said Ousman Kakay. "We're playing great defense, having good, aggressive base-running, and keeping opponents off-balance. But it's time to see how good we really are. What better measuring stick is there in this sport than four games against the undefeated defending champions? The atmosphere at the Istria City Baseball Diamond will be electric, and we are sure that General Milani Park will be quite a ballpark to play in as well. If we want to say we are among the best, then we have to perform among the best, and this four game series will go a long way in showcasing our ability to compete against this sport's top teams and historical powers."

Our prayers have been heard! The Casaran system is brought back for a major Worldwide tournament! After the resounding success that was the Soccer World Cup that first introduced it as far as Ko-oren was concerned, we now have a World Baseball Classic that uses the same majestic system. It's a shame it cannot be used for a domestic system, just because of the number of teams involved. The Casaran system is the best way to quickly bring order to a large number of competitors, and as time goes on, reflect small changes and differences in quality accurately and more perfectly. There are 42 teams in this World Baseball Classic, and instead of putting them in small groups and forcing them to produce results and generate statistics amongst themselves, all teams are now put into one big group ('free-range baseball', maybe?), and teams that most closely resemble each other's record (6-2 for Ko-oren, now, for instance) are to play each other. That means that you'll play teams that are closest to your own level of quality - which in turn produces more exciting games, against winnable opponents, while never feeling like you're throwing away a must-win game. Every single game should be close, and every single result matters.

For our first series (which are all four-game series, by the way), we were paired with Damukuni, an opponent that is 'closely matched' to us. Our start was just a little better than theirs, nearly sweeping the series by winning 12-0, 3-0, and 6-4 and dropping game 3: 1-0. The Achilles' heel of the Green and Blue (more on that name later) has long been the hitting, but against this close rival, hitting was not a problem (apart from game 3). Turns out, for the first series, the best teams were up against the weakest opponents. Everyone is 0-0, after all. That means that dropping that third game could be a big factor later on.

In the first game, the full strength of this roster was available. Ritsushima went three from four, Esumi went two from four, Vamada batted in five runs, Viera hit a home run, Peredo went two from four and then batted in a run on the side. The start was incredible, and the first two pitcher changes couldn't do it for Damukuni. All twelve runs were scored before the seventh inning. The second game was more of the same, with a fun twist in that the Damukuni starter had plenty of video on our team, had a good day, and got away lucky a few times with 9 left on base in just the first four innings alone. After that, things started moving as the Damukuni closers couldn't take out Esumi and Ritsushima, who stole their way to third base, then got home by Kagulazaka and Esumi. The fourth game was the closest one, with Damukuni finally hitting more than a single run and the first game not to end in a shutout. There was some experimenting in this one with Makkinga taking Esumi's place, Berganza starting over Kagulazaka, and Gray and Girard taking those oh-so-important defensive spots, shortstop and third baseman. This scored Damukuni some runs, but it also paid off with better hitting in defensive positions.

That third game was the odd one out. Utada was supposed to start pitching, but dropped out due to shoulder issues in the second inning. From then on, it was a roller coaster for the pitching staff, as Matsuda had early reps, then Sotolongo. Hoga got in in the seventh inning, pitched two full innings, and the only thing that went on as scheduled was Ozawa as the closer. On the field itself things didn't go much easier: Ritsushima tripped and rested after the fifth inning, Viera overextended his knee in the sixth, all for Damukuni to finally get the tie-breaking run in the tenth inning - which Ozawa pitched, so that's that for your closing pitcher who's pitching two innings anyway. Not a great day - so that was why it was so great to have a functioning team on the final day to win the valuable 3-1 record.

Nova Anglicana! The true power of the Casaran system shines through as the Green and Blue (again, more on that later) took on a well-ranked team. The final results were so much closer this time, with no shutouts nor scores over 10. A win by 1, a win by 2 (both at home), a loss by 4 and a win by 4 (away). Next up is Anthor, by the way.

At the end of the second game, the Yoshiman members of the national team (easily recognisable from their Japanese and Aviansolan names) declared they wanted to be called the Yellow team from now on - green and blue being very Ko-orenite colours, and yellow being a Yoshiman colour. Last Classic, some members of the team spoke out in favour of Yoshiman independence, but this is the first time some on-field action was tied to that ambition. Both away games were played in a (somewhat improvised) yellow jersey. Not just the sleeves were yellow, all of it was. These players have also claimed a vital role in the team, not overruling the coaches but definitely influencing their choices. They have claimed every single home game for themselves, each and every one of those games are to be played on Yoshiman soil.

LIVE FROM EFFELENENDRO - Hello everybody and welcome back to the Musings of an Armored Dinner Jacket. As you can see by my banner, yes it's confirmed: I am now officially retired from the game. It's been a great ride, 15 years I've sunk into this adventure of my life, but now it's time to call it quits and let the next generation of baseball stars take to the mound and the plate and make their names known throughout the country. Okay, I'll be the first to admit, that was very melodramatic. But the retired life has been treating me pretty well so far; in fact, I think I can say that I've enjoyed it. Of course, I still want to be around the game so I've been hanging around Doucoure Park taking selfies and signings autographs, the usual stuff. But enough about me. The World Baseball Classic is back, and it's now in its 47th edition. Can you believe it? 47 editions of world baseball where the best of the multiverse battle it out for the right to be crowned baseball champions of the world. All right, I gotta stop saying the word "world". I'm sure you're all getting annoyed.

So, World Baseball Classic 47. We're playing in a brand new system where teams are pitted against other teams are supposedly on the same level as they are. I don't know how they calculate who's on the same level as who so don't ask me. Anyway, Kurtis Lingenfelter and his boys are back at it again, going up against 8 opponents in a four-game series (two home, two away) which will determine who gets to play in the finals in the Free Republics. I kind of have the feeling that the Free Republics has been hosting a lot of things lately, but I've been around a lot of places so maybe it's just the jet lag talking. I don't know.

Anyway, first opponent for the Revolution was a place called Aeprelh. Getting real Abanhfleft vibes from that name there, if you ask me. Anyway (I need to stop saying anyway now), what a start for the Revolution. A grand slam in the very first inning of the very first game of the World Baseball Classic. What more can a guy ask for? Okay, things got a little bit sticky near the end but we held on to the win, Peter Langford once again proving why he is the closer for the national team. But that second game on Aeprelh soil though... Hoowee! Now that was true fire! Especially the top of the eighth. Two triples! Two triples. It's so unbelievable I have to repeat myself. That never happens to the Revolution. Never. I've seen it happen in the FMLB but never in the WBC. But now it has. Go figure. At least Guillermo Rodriguez got the win over his opposite number.

And then it's back to the Cathedral of Baseball, the National Baseball Stadium in Effelenendro, for Game 3. We put the Cathedral's reputation for being a pitcher's ballpark to good use, and the atmosphere helped in its own way as Aeprelh churned out a helluva lot of errors that turned what should have been only singles and even outs into doubles and occasionally a triple. They tried to mount a comeback but fell just short thanks to some unbelievable catches from the likes of Peter Offutt and Massimo Verde on causes that otherwise would have been considered lost. Over to Imgortur for the fourth and final game of the series against Aeprelh however, and the visitors got wise to our tactics and drew first blood, scoring the first of only two runs at the Stadion de December 27 on the day. Still the errors came from their side though, and sacrifice became the word of the day as our hitters eked out almost one run per inning, although Yorge Freyas was pushed back to home plate after the Aeprelh pitcher threw four consecutive walks at the bottom of the seventh to give the Revolution a 5-3 lead. And then Aeprelh turned it around and gave themselves a 6-5 lead. But Hashim Bansamun, you sexy beast. You've only gone and done it. A walk-off double at the Stadion de December 27. It's happened only a handful of times in the time that I've been with the Cubs and have never done it myself, so Hashim, I'm real proud of you, man.

Yeah, that's pretty much it for our first series back in the WBC. A good result (four good results in fact, if I may say so) and a good record were the spoils. Thanks to this we were given for our second series the Newmanistan Rockets, and I am sure that by now we all know how that became a helluva series of baseball. But it was all so epic that to squeeze it into the bottom of a not-so-consequential blog post just feels like not doing it any justice. Boy do I have a lot of tales to tell about those four games. But for now, this is the Armored Dinner Jacket saying ciao, peace. Catch you in my next post.

The Sanctii seemed like they were hungry for revenge after losing to the Sherpas in WBC46, and the Sherpas were having trouble getting everything to work right at the same time. Luochong Zhuang pitched well in his first-ever WBC start, allowing only 1 run in 7 innings, but he didn't get the run support to capitalize on it. The game was tied 1-1 going into the 9th, and Bharadhwaj took the loss when he gave up an RBI single to King Paulus.

In game 2, Akunjee just wasn't himself and was driven from the game in the 4th inning. After the game he admitted he wasn't feeling well -- he thought it might be the flu or something he ate that didn't agree with him. Sarang Oli was visibly frustrated, even though he still expressed confidence in the overall quality of the team and he thought returning to home turf at Chokpori would be good for them.

Game 3 was another case of decent pitching and no run support. Banerjee, who was usually one of the team's best hitters, got ejected for charging the mound after a pitch inside, which he interpreted as a deliberate attempt to bean him.

In game 4, the bats woke up. Banerjee hit a 2-run homer in the 7th that gave the Sherpas a 5-4 lead. But then Fang and Bharadhwaj could not hold the lead. When Fang talked to Changyi Ihawa after the game, the temptation to peep down the front of her dress was not the only thing that made it awkward. Even though the bullpen had blown a 1-run lead, a lot of the chatter among the fans and sportswriters back home talked about Mingma Al-Ali, asking if he was past his prime. Ali had a reputation for being methodical and dependable, but lately he hadn't been quite as dependable. Giving up 4 runs in 6 innings wasn't disastrous, but it wasn't brilliant either. He was one of the oldest players on the national team, and people thought his age was starting to show. Some people had talked about it during the regular SIBA season too.
