Famous female rulers of your nation

Postby Arumdaum » Sun Oct 13, 2019 11:18 pm

Does your country have any famous female rulers?

In Jeongmi, the most famous female ruler by far is Empress Taejo, who founded the Kim dynasty in 1110 CE and was responsible for the development of several reforms, including the development of jeonggeul.

Empress Taejo was born as Kim Hyohyeon on May 15, 1076 to Kim Dan-won and Lady Eo. Kim Dan-won, her father, had served as a general to Lee Song-heon in his wars to reunify the country.

Due to the family's noble and wealthy status, she had several servants to perform daily tasks for her, allowing her a large amount of free time, much of which was spent on studying, encouraged by her father as the only child of the family. At home, she possessed access to a trove of books regarding politics, government, morality, the military, and other tropics. At the age of 14, she caught Emperor Seongjo's eye and was married to him following his announcement of a new Jeongmian dynasty, becoming Empress Hyohyeon.

Her inability to perform many domestic tasks related to being Empress and the stillbirth of her first child in 1092 resulted in her falling from favor and the Emperor favoring various concubines and other consorts, although she remained the de jure main Empress consort of the Emperor. During this period, she was able to continue on focusing on her studies.

She was nearly demoted from being Empress after Consort Oh bore the Emperor a son in 1094, which Hyohyeon had failed to do so at the time. It was only due to the influence her father had with the Emperor and the imperial court that she was able to remain in her position.

In late 1096, she bore the Emperor a son, Prince Lee Wang, the future Emperor Sindeok, which greatly improved her position at the court and among the royal family.

Following the birth of her son, she and her allies at the court, including her father, began to engage in retaliation against those who had argued for the Empress' demotion for initially having been unable to bear a son. The officials Oh Heon-u and Nam Cheol were executed in 1098 after accusations of treason against the Emperor.

During the autumn of 1102, Emperor Seongjo had a stroke, and Hyohyeon requested that only she be allowed to tend to him, which was accepted. The Emperor remained weak throughout the rest of his life, and she grew increasingly influential in making governmental decisions, soon making most of the major decisions of government in the name of the Emperor. While the Emperor was recovering from the immediate effects of his stroke, she accused his favored concubine, Consort Oh, of having cursed him with the stroke through witchcraft, and had her executed, while her son and Seonjo's firstborn Lee Jeong was sent into exile. Asserting her position as Empress, she forced numerous other rivals and suspected rivals into exile.

During this period, Empress Hyohyeon gave heavy support to the growing and reformist Sinsa, or New Scholar faction, led largely by Lee Taek, a young and handsome official whom she was engaged with in a romantic and sexual relationship, to much controversy. Members of other factions of the court were largely suppressed and the Sinsa grew increasingly in control of the imperial examination system.

On January 4, 1110, Emperor Seongjo passed away suddenly while in decent health, shortly after discovering the relationship between Empress Hyohyeon and Lee taek. Contemporary accounts from her rivals claim that after making multiple major government decisions on behalf of the Emperor, she grew power hungry enough that she poisoned the Emperor herself.

Upon the death of Seongjo, Hyohyeon called for a twenty-seven day period of mourning, but also stated that rather than having power pass onto her son, she would rule as Empress Taejo of the Kim dynasty. This caused a deep amount of controversy, not only due to the declaration of a new dynasty, but also due to the fact that the Empress was a woman and seemed to be betraying her deceased husband. Many prominent and able officials resigned, including the Prime Minister.

Lee Taek was appointed as the new Prime Minister, a controversial move to even some members of the Sinsa faction. During this period, the Sinsa faction obtained complete control of the government, and numerous reforms and projects were undertaken. Among these were the development of jeonggeul, the payment of labor in cash as opposed to corvée labor, and direct government loans paid to farmers during the planting season.

Even prior to having become Empress, Taejo greatly promoted and advanced laws which raised the status and treatment of women in Jeongmi. Forced prostitution was outlawed, and several brothels were closed down during her reign. Women were allowed greater property, marriage, and divorce rights, and the death penalty was instituted for rape.

Taejo grew seriously in the winter of 1161, and remained bedridden for the rest of the year. She died on the evening of 16 September, 1161, and was succeeded by her son, Emperor Sindeok.

During her fifty-one years as empress regnant, the third-longest of any Kim monarch, she oversaw the development of jeonggeul, consolidated and centralized imperial power, expanded the size of the empire to the south, and encouraged trade and scientific development throughout the empire.

Taejo has been noted for overseeing the development of jeonggeul early in her reign, as well for being one of the only females to hold the title of hwangje in Jeongmian history and the only female Sinju monarch to start her own dynasty. In the modern era, she has been the subject of numerous works of popular culture, being featured in various books, video games, and shows.

Three most notable rulers:

  • Isabel I de Trastámara: Queen of Castile, married to Fernando de Aragon in order to form what we know today as Spain. Isabel led the conquest of Granada and financed the travels of Columbus, which made her among the best rulers and the “Mother of the nation”.
  • Irelia Andersson: Daughter of a Swedish merchant who fought against Napoleon during the Peninsular invasion. Her family was murdered in Valladolid while the French seized that city and they couldn’t return to Sweden. The Bourbon family was exiled, and since she led on her 16s the first victory against the French, she was granted the rulership of Spain. Her reign was short, as in 1815 she decided to resign to give the throne back to the Bourbons. She is notable for saying “Bury them in France, this land will not have them.”
  • Adelaida II: Current ruler. During her rule, she reassured Spain as the biggest world power. She is also investing a lot in infrastructure and is doing “Modern Wonders of the World”, just like the on-progress Canal of Tehuantepec.

Queen Yocasta the First

Was a good ruler until her daughter, the Princess Chrysta, died, and then had other people's daughters stolen and forced to take Chrysta's place, having them murdered when they messed up. In the end she was so unpopular that when a challenger for the throne showed up, her own Chancellor murdered her.

Queen Amber

Tried to rule well after defeating Yocasta but accidently set free the criminals along with the political prisoners, causing a crime wave that lasted for years, and was overthrown and killed in her turn. After her the monarchy lost most of it's powers and is largely ceremonial.

It should be noted that most Vallermoorian Queens were reasonably good at ruling and these two are the exceptions.

Empress Elise of House Burndy ruled from 1764 to 1826 making her Thermodolia’s longest ruler. She presided over massive expansion of Thermodolia and expanded the Thermodolian Colonial empire. Her rein saw Thermodolia increase in wealth from trade with European nations and marked a golden age that would last until 1856. She also made great strides in democracy and social issues expanding voting for many and implementing social reforms. Empress Elise is remembered fondly and is to this day Thermodolia’s most popular Monarch

There have been no female rulers in Rwizikuru, especially in the modern era. The two Presidents, Samhuri Ngonidzashe and Izibongo Ngonidzashe have been men, and the Mambo is succeeded via agnatic primogeniture, which effectively means there can be no female head of state in Rwizikuru, so long as the monarchy remains in existence.

If the constitution does go through, however, there may be a possibility that there could be a female Prime Minister, but considering the attitudes in Rwizikuran society, it is probably a long way off.

The most well-known female leader is Assistant Prime Minister Deborah Martin, mainly due to being the first woman in the country to be elected the head of government, in 1979. She greatly supported women's rights, such as by reducing the wage gap and increasing the proportion of women in the workforce. She opened the door for women to be elected the head of government in the future (women were allowed to be elected, but women were disadvantaged in politics) and remains an inspiration for many women today.

Empress Glasha Asmika (Reign: 1815 - 1873) is the most famous female ruler in Tulovian history - in fact, either the most famous, or second most famous leader in all Tulovian history. Her reign saw significant changes to Tulovian society in every way imaginable, drastic expansion of the nation, the utter decimation of the nation's primary enemy, Krasnodaria, decimation of the ruling nobility, and a significant rise in literacy. Her fame has led to many things being named after her, and many statues of her have been built. Even with the rise of the Communist United Socialist States of Tulov in 1997, she remains just as highly regarded as ever, with all which beared her name before their rise, continuing to bear her name, including the famous Glasha University. Overall, her reign saw the nation transform from a traditional Absolute Monarchy, into a fullblown "Grand Autocracy", with all power in the nation placed into the complete, sole, and unrestricted hands of the Monarch.

Empress Lera Asmika (Reign: 1894 - 1905) is somewhat famous, but also relatively forgotten. She rose to power after the assassination of her brother, and her reign saw the establishment of Tulov's first secret police (literally the "Tulovian Secret Police"), mass illegalization of political groups deemed to be Communist, Fascist, or Anarchist, and subsequent executions. In the end, her reign put some pretty significant cracks into the Monarchy, (especially after her son assumed the throne after her - and was then assassinated after 3 days in power), and helped lead to its demise years later. Her reign earned her the title "The Cruel".

Rechyotnik (Head of Government) of the United Socialist States of Tulov, Tatiana Tulonovna, the first female leader ever elected in Tulov, served two terms, from 2003-2009. And Premier (Head of State) Aksinya Luzhkova, the second female leader (and subsequently the first woman to hold the title of Premier), served two terms, from 2006 to 2012.

Anna Belousova, the 6th and current Rechyotnik of Tulov. She was elected to office in 2015, and is now on her second term, continuing to serve (year: 2020). In her first term, she helped to hold the nation together through an extremely devastating war (The Thirteenth Krasno-Tulovian War). She is regarded as a champion for Tulovian rights and liberties, and while her economic policies have led to her being beloved by some and despised by many others, she is easily the next most female famous leader in Tulovian History, right behind Empress Glasha Asmika.

Empress Fina Liu is probably the most prominent of Xanthal's rulers. Under her leadership Xanthal rose to heights of power not seen before or since, but by the end of her reign the state was on the brink of collapse and the capital lay at the mercy of foreign militaries. Her legacy is- as one might imagine- divisive. She's variously painted as a tyrannical zealot who brought the nation to ruin in service to her ego and as a tragic hero who led her people to greatness only to face betrayal by her own forces. The ebbs and flows of Liu's posthumous reputation have- as memory of her era faded into history- become more about the ideas of dominion and imperialism her administration represents than the woman herself.

The three most famous Radiatian female rulers (and as it happens, the only three females to rule) are:

  • Empress Usula - the semi-mythical Empress of Radia, who was said to rule circa 1100AD (in the Gregorian calendar) and was believed to have not only 'civilised' the settlement of Radii but expanded it as far north as Alayenia and to areas including the modern day Radiatian states of Amentra, Saku and Tchort.
  • Lena Toriah - Prime Minister of the Radiatian Federation when the country was a Parliamentary Republic, and most notable for cracking down on corruption, stopping Radiatia's backslide toward dictatorship and "Lenanomics" which resulted in a massive economic expansion that brought Radiatia into the first world. She still lives today, and is referred to by some as "The Mother of the Nation"
  • Angela Pavlovic - First female President of the Radiatian Federation, ascending to the role as the former Vice President following the impeachment of Gregori Fyoderov. Actually, she wasn't that good, and was defeated in an election three years later, but she was the only female head of state of modern day Radiatia.

In Griffan folklore, a woman named Eleonora was an early tribal ruler. Her conquest of the lowlands created Griffan-Bavaria, a pre-Roman state from which Griffany is directly descended.

In the 1930's, Lilly Simpson, the sister of arms dealer Lloyd Simpson, was a popular figure. She and her brother, rich aristocrats from Britain who pledged their allegiance to the Kingdom, lived a public, cosmopolitan existence, much to the delight of the Griffanese press! Notable incidents include when the duo threw large quantities of money into a crowd during an Empire Day parade, causing a stampede that killed ten. After General Kingswood was temporarily incapacitated by a plane crash in 1936, these two were part of a ruling council that governed in his absence.

The two were found dead during the 1943 Bremen Nacht festival, having overdosed on a cocktail of narcotics. They were immortalized by the Simpson Heavy Tank, an improved King Tiger driven by a V-12 diesel engine, which entered service in 1944, as well as the Simpson Fund, which contributes money to the maintenance of historic buildings. Their highly-successful arms concern, Simpson Works, was nationalized in 1950, becoming Simpson-Griffany, GmBH.

Women are explicitly forbidden from holding any religious office within the Hadinian Theocracy, with the sole exception of becoming a nun. Nuns don't exactly rank high on the chain of command for clergy.
Just so you know, this nation, in character, is a highly sexist, highly theocratic, and highly authoritarian state. (Though under the new guy, it seems to be improving a little).

I disagree with a lot of what this nation stands for. It was invented for its intrigue and ample opportunities for satire, not for its ideals.

Postby Imperial Majapahit » Sat Oct 19, 2019 6:47 am

By far, the most well-known female to have reigned as a monarch in ancient Majapahiti history was Queen Tribhuwana Wijayatunggadewi, born as Dyah Gitarja in the early 14th century. She was the daughter of Raden Wijaya, the founder and first King of Majapahit. During her young adulthood, Tribhuwana was granted the title Duchess of Kahuripan by the reigning king, Jayanagara I (1309-1328). When Jayanagara passed away, the throne should have passed to Gayatri, Tribhuwana's mother and one of the wives of Raden Wijaya. But because Gayatri had converted to become a Buddhist priest (Majapahit was predominantly Hindu at the time and governed by Hindu laws and customs), she could not take over the throne. As such, Tribhuwana was ordered to accede to the throne in the name of her mother.

In the early years of her reign, Majapahit was shaken by several rebellions, including in the districts of Sadeng and Keta in the year 1331. Tribhuwana took personal command of the Army and by herself led her troops into battle against the rebels after prolonged infighting within the upper echelons of the nobility occurred to determine who would lead the Army to crush the rebellions. Queen Tribhuwana succeeded in squashing the rebel forces and managed to reunite the kingdom.

A few years later in 1334, Queen Tribhuwana inaugurated Gajah Mada as Rakryan Patih or equivalent to Prime Minister. In his inauguration ceremony, Gajah Mada vowed to abstain from all earthly pleasures, in this case eating food with spices, until he had conquered the entire Nusantara archipelago for Majapahit, in a pledge later commonly known as the Palapa Oath. To achieve his vision, Gajah Mada, with assistance from his Queen, greatly expanded the Army and Navy and modernised the two branches to prepare them for future conquests. In 1343, the Kingdom of Pejeng on the island of Bali had been defeated by Majapahit, followed by the kingdoms of Melayu and Sriwijaya in 1347. These achievements greatly expanded the territory under Majapahiti influence or direct control.

Tribhuwana's mother, Gayatri, passed away in 1350. A year later in 1351, she abdicated the throne, letting her son, Hayam Wuruk become her successor.

Queen Aiko:
- The first monarch of what would become Aikoland and our country's namesake. Traditionally considered to have reigned from 510 to 525. However, as with many of our early monarchs, there exist no historical evidence for her existence and the dates for her reign come from Le Livre d'Aikoland, a late 11th century text containing a list of all the Kings and Queens of Aikoland until the year 1083.

Queen Marianne II
- Reigned from 1287 until 1309. Most famous for unifying the Kingdom of Aiko with the Kingdom of Boullién and the Kingdom of Saun in 1303 under personal union, eventually leading to the incorporation of the three kingdoms into the Kingdom of Aikoland over 400 years later.

Queen Marie IV
- Reigned from 1723 until 1799 and is the longest reigning Aikolandais monarch. During the last decade of her reign, she reformed the government and worked with a coalition of nobility and commoners to establish the first constitution of Aikoland in a successful attempt at preventing the French Revolution from spreading to Aikoland. Due to her role in the transition from absolutism to democracy, Marie IV is popularly referred to as the 'Mother of Democracy', even in modern Aikoland.

Sultana Hafeeza Bolkiah was the last ruler of the Bruneian Empire, and the first ruler of Bruneian Malaya. Her father died in combat, and her grandfather, the previous Sultan, died without any remaining male descendants. She ascended to the throne following his passing, but due to her being female and all, her rule was considered by many illegitimate; and in fact she had to put down two rebellions during the early years of her rule. Following such, she sought to continue her grandfather's and father's work by conquering the Hindu Empire of Majapahit on Java, after which founding Bruneian Malaya once she had unified Java, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula under her empire. She died childless, and would be succeeded by Sultan Abd al-Qahar Bolkiah II. She was the only ruling Sultana of the Bolkiah dynasty in the history of Bruneian Malaya.

Being a matrilineal state, almost all of our rulers have been female. The most famous is probably the dynastic founder of the current ruling line, the Mother Empress Resyanna Shrailleen. But in the spirit of the thread if not its literal intent, I'll give you the most famous male ruler of the nation.

Prince-Regent Veress Pellri Kadrissat Resyanna fe Shrailleen was the last ruler to preside over the Shrailleeni Golden Age, governing the country following the death of his wife the Mother Empress Pellri Kadrissat Resyanna fe Shrailleen and until his daughter came of age, from 1849 to 1858. He is widely regarded to have been a good and just ruler. During his near-decade of rule he was able to navigate the intrigues of the Royal Court, fighting attempts to shift the dynastic order to other families to ensure his daughter's ascension to the throne. He also streamlined the growing Shrailleeni economy by putting into the place the groundwork for a pan-archipelago road and ferry network, oversaw the construction of a new irrigation and plumbing system for the Imperial City, and was a known patron of the arts. He is perhaps best known for founding what is now Mother University in honor of his late wife, which is now the second-largest center for higher education in the empire.

Queen/Uguralin of The Kingdom of Tamgu, Teniya II (1201-1233)

Queen Teniya II was a special ruler that improved the kingdom in every way possible. She conquered land, where she gave a city her name, Teniyatoma. She invested the money she took from enemies to improving technology and lowering the tax rates. Her relationship with the people was superb, every citizen of Tamgu loved the queen and the queen loved them. In her time a lot of great works of art were created, almost all of which still get amazed at. She was the first-ever ruler of Tamgu to order sailing beyond the islands of Kologita, then owned by Tamgu, to find a new part of a continent that previously wasn't explored by the Goranian people. This lead to them to start establishing spice and Osko-fruit colonies that eventually grew to be independent about 400 years later. She is remembered as one of Tamgu's greatest leaders, if not the best.

There have been three female Voxijan leaders, and all three are notable:

Queen Nerea I, House of Biskarret
She was the first female leader of Voxija. She opened relations between the Voxijan Basques and the native Viñak people, starting a wave of interracial marriage.

Queen Nerea II, House of Zuvionda
She was the last reigning monarch that Voxija had. Nerea II peacefully abdicated to usher in a republic.

President Bixenta Agirre
The present leader of Voxija, and the first female president. Under her administration, gay marriage was legalized throughout Voxija and the economy has grown.

Nzarina Rebecca I
The first of only two female Gandoorese monarchs, Rebecca I reigned from 1741 until 1817 and was the longest-reigning monarch in our history. It is sometimes noted that she may not have even become the monarch had it not been for her predecessor and grandfather, Nzard George I, deliberately choosing her as his successor over her father and his son, William. (The Gandoorese monarchy officially practiced male-preference primogeniture, but the sovereign had the authority to designate a successor who did not follow this rule due to their rule being absolute at the time. It is believed that George I chose his granddaughter as his heir due to his personal dislike of his own son, who he claimed was 'a dandy and a fool, not fit to lead a county, much less a country')

During her many decades as monarch, Rebecca I ended the policy of the destruction of the native peoples of Gandoor. While this did not end the wars between the European Gandoorese and the native population of Gandoor, it did end the genocidal policies of previous monarchs. She also abolished slavery and freed the estimated 11,000 enslaved persons in Gandoor, granting them and their descendants the status of 'Freed Residents of Gandoor', which gave them the right to reside and work within Gandoor. Both of these occurred in 1783.

Rebecca I also worked to reform Gandoorese currency. In 1758, she withdrew 'unnecessary coinage of the pound' from circulation, removing the farthing, halfpenny, twopence, threepence, sixpence, half-crown, and crown from circulation, leaving only the penny, shilling, and pound in circulation. To further reform Gandoorese currency, the Gandoorese pound was completely replaced with the gdyn, a decimal currency divided into 100 cendyns, which remains the current currency of the Democratic Republic.

Rebecca Miyamoto
Our nation's eighth Prime Minister, in office from 1982 until 1994. A member of the Communist Party, Miyamoto is considered to be the originator of the New Communist Wing, also known as the Miyamoto Communists. Miyamoto Communists are distinguished by their general support for social democratic policies rather than outright democratic socialist ones. Miyamoto continued the economic liberalization policies spearheaded by her predecessor in office and saw the Gandoorese economy finally reaching levels it had reached prior to the Gandoor Civil War of 1953 - 1957 in 1985. Her last two years in office would see the start of the largest economic growth in Gandoorese history, which would last until 1999.

Miyamoto was famous for her support for gay rights, having announced her support for same-sex marriage in 1970. Indeed, while it wasn't by her own doing, Gandoor would become the first nation to legalize same-sex marriage during her second term in office, in 1988.
