The Special Interests Ground Missions Activity

The SIGMA Special Operations Group was activated in 2000 as a multi-national special operations force for the conducting of the most complex, classified, and dangerous missions directed by the Special Operations Command Authority. Only United Nations Security Council members have active operators within SIGMA.

Little is known regarding the origin or purpose of SIGMA other than to conduct operations regarding mysterious happenings around the world. Some have cited SIGMA operators as being potential pilots of new and dangerous experimental technology. This can neither be confirmed or denied as all SIGMA operations have been conducted without comment by government agencies.

In 1916, contact was made with a parallel dimension by a series of tests conducted by Austrian physicists and researchers. Resulting communications was said to have slowly driven all members of the project mad over the course of the next seven weeks and the program would be deactivated by the sole remaining member, Ludwig Flamm. Reactivated by the Germans in 1934, the program would fail to yield any results due to internal sabotage by Flamm.

In 1935, Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen rediscovered the means to developing this gateway and through a series of highly contained tests, managed to establish successful contact with the other side. They, however, omitted the existence of this gateway as according to government coercion on the matter from their papers. In 1942, the existence of the Gateway was explored as a potential means for delivering a weapon of mass destruction to a remote location, but was ultimately discarded due to heightened fears of discovery by the Germans, resulting in the development of Atomic Weaponry instead.

While the program was initially developed as a means to build a functional Nuclear Fission weapon, the Manhattan Project also yielded results into experimental energy taps that could open gateways to the parallel dimension. This information would soon come to use during the Cold War when Project Blackbird was developed. Utilizing test subjects to traverse the gateway, the governments of the United States of America, the British Commonwealth, and the United Kingdom, soon determined that substantial risk was taken by these subjects.

In 1965, the first subject would report contact with an unnamed entity from the other side. All electro-magnetic recordings of interviews with the subject have deteriorated due to REDACTED radiation. Anti-mimetic qualities have been annotated to likely result from trans-dimensional interactions and higher-order anomalous behaviors not yet understood. Personnel exposed to REDACTED radiation are required to spend at least one week recovery as repeated exposure can result in unwanted mutations and trauma. Additional studies of those subjects that interacted with foreign entities began to show heightened resistance to radiation poisoning.

In 1974, researchers with Project Bifrost reported potential for recovery of artifacts from the far side of the gateway with improvements in nuclear-power generation which could sustain more powerful gateways. Artifact recovery began in late 1976 and would continue unabated until REDACTED when a contingency reactor failed. REDACTED radiation was detected at the site and all remaining operations ceased. It is still unknown as to how this failure occurred, yet it is suspected that foreign incursion led to the incident. At the cessation of the investigations and artifact-recovery operations, all known anomalous activity ceased.

In 1983, researchers with Project Bifrost reported recovery of an artifact from the Edges of the Marianas Trench. Shortly thereafter, anomalous activity was recorded for a period of three years within the trench before ceasing. No research craft were dispatched at the time as Soviet focus on operations in the Atlantic was of greater concern to the governments of involved nations. It is believed that REDACTED was released from the REDACTED during this period and all subsequent attempts to establish contact have failed.

In 1994, the Russian Federation was officially briefed on SIGMA and all information regarding Soviet knowledge on the parallel dimension was divulged in return for access to US and Commonwealth information. While governments of the world uniquely determined there to be a threat from potential incursions, it would not be addressed until 1996. Multiple anomalous incidents regarding REDACTED were reported across the world and several hundred lives would be lost in additional incidents until 2000.

The SIGMA Special Operations Group was activated in 2000 as a multi-national special operations reaction force to the REDACTED regarding REDACTED. Operations information was gathered by on-the-ground resources regarding foreigner incursion. Those exposed to REDACTED were detained and studied. Technology derived from artifacts recovered led to the creation of special equipment that could only be controlled by REDACTED. All reactive personnel were deemed as "Hosts" and have been granted special authority in the usage of REDACTED and associated technology.

In 2013, the first SIGMA operation was conducted using First Generation Hosts. This operation was considered a success in spite of heavy casualties suffered when REDACTED became hostile and belligerent. Of 6 operators deployed, 2 of which were Hosts, both Hosts and one Security officer was killed. In the debrief, it was determined that age of the Hosts and power-usage from their technology had resulted in unwanted mutations. Both Hosts were determined to be past bio-criticality and were terminated before they could become hostile.

In 2018, Second Generation Hosts were brought into use and operational survivability went from 90% to 40%. It was determined that better training, understanding of REDACTED, and overall better screening for Host candidates led to higher success and lower mortality when engaging hostile foreigners. Third Generation Hosts were given authorization for deployment in 2020 utilizing newly refined technology and training as developed by the SIGMA Arsenal.

In 2020, Generation 3 Hosts were finally deployed after having spent 10+ years in training. Hosts have been taken from a multitude of operational backgrounds to include civilian and special test groups. They utilize suits known as Advanced Military Operations Suits (AMOS).

SIGMA - Edge of the Abyss, is a Science-Fiction/ Modern-Horror Military RP centered around Lovecraftian Mythos and engagement with entities from a parallel dimension. These entities are highly dangerous and their existence is kept as the most closely-guarded secret around the world. People die in this world and are easily broken by interacting with the other side and the foreigners (entities from the parallel dimension). Those that survive their encounters are considered to be highly infectious and are quarantined until the nature of their affliction can be determined. Hosts are selected from those who show minimal reaction to exposure, yet can interact with Eldritch technology. Due to their unique abilities, they are selected for training in anti-eldritch warfare. If they refuse this selection, they are generally indefinitely detained or terminated as they pose an inherent risk to non-affected personnel. All Hosts are assigned an AMOS if they so choose, which is then tailored to their unique levels of exposure and physiology. Those that forego usage of an AMOS are generally employed as support personnel on missions.

AMOS are the bio-engineered suits which Hosts use to combat Eldritch invaders (foreigners). They are developed off of a series of base chassis designs developed during earlier generations and largely combat the effects of utilizing augments. They do, however, fail with overuse and stress. In this event, a Host can suffer catastrophic failure of their self-containment system and mutate or transform. These events generally require the immediate termination of a Host and subsequent quarantine of the incident area alongside incineration of their remains to prevent potential exposure. AMOS Augments, Equipment, and SIGMA weaponry is developed in-house by the SIGMA Arsenal and Laboratories.

Operation Considerations:
1. Utilizing an Augment during a mission imposes Genetic Instability.
2. Exceeding safe or standard tolerances for Genetic Instability increases risk of Mutation or Transformation.
3. It takes roughly a week to recovery from light Genetic Instability, doubling in length respective to severity of the condition..
4. Mutations and Transformation are permanent and can often be lethal if not treated immediately or tempered.

Personnel that have been inducted into the SIGMA-SOG undergo extensive background investigations prior to joining. Each dossier covers various personal and professional aspects of the members of SIGMA as well as their designated AMOS. Initial entry into an AMOS requires a period of synchronization with their suit and as such limits the augments which can be safely added to the system. Additionally, blank templates for incoming SIGMA personnel and their AMOS will be provided in the coded section below.

SIGMA-SOG Personnel Data Sheet Template
The following form is for the purpose of quickly in-processing SIGMA-SOG Hosts and determining key factors regarding their history prior to SIGMA and during their service with it.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Fill out the application as prompted using all information as can best be supplied.
2. Select a 'Callsign' by using the name of a significant character from your operator's national history or mythology (Americans could use Davy Crockett or Rip Van Winkle for example).
3. Do not alter the Data Sheet as it is also an application of your character and should relatively be similar in size and composition to all others in the thread. Please refer to the currently accepted and listed Personnel Data Sheets under the Personnel Dossiers to get a feeling for how yours should look. The more I have to correct yours, the less time you'll have to post and take part in the thread. Let's not waste each other's time.
4. Keep in mind that operators are considered to be incredibly talented individuals, but they are not inhuman and have spent plenty of time developing their physical bodies as well as their mental acuity. Failure to realize this can result in abnormal circumstances arising IC.
5. Please keep all miscellaneous information relegated to the Remarks section under Personal Historical Record.

SIGMA-SOG AMOS Data Sheet Template
The following form is for the requisition of an Exosuit or Exosuit Modification. Use the provided resources under the SIGMA Arsenal when referencing external material.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. AMOS are not extensively developed yet, while their power sources are highly energetic and supply more power than traditional energy sources, they have limiters in place to protect pilots from Genetic mutations and instability.
2. The more equipment used aboard an AMOS, the more power it requires to operate unless the device has self-contained power-sources, which will increase weight and decrease mobility and reaction timing.
3. Adapting and modifying an Augment takes time. You may switch out Augments between missions, but this requires additional time which is liable to make the new Augment operate with higher risk of breaking or malfunctioning, Murphy's Law is in play.
5. Realize that the more you have going on, the more likely to suffer from mutations, instability, and injury from an AMOS your operator will be. Operations can kill player characters and will inflict lethal and punishing damage on those whom try to act without thinking.

SIGMA Arsenal

Postby Kassaran » Mon Jul 27, 2015 2:55 am

The SIGMA Arsenal represents the cutting edge of the Earth's technology, combining both extraterrestrial power sources and terrestrial technology to create the semi-parasitic suits called AMOS. Below are listed specific applications of Augments, the key point of an AMOS, to give an idea on the effectiveness and development of AMOS and what to keep in mind when designing your AMOS.

  • Nerve Enhancement - This augment tends to make pilots suffer from increased metabolic activity and some cognitive dissonance during their adjustment period. Lapses in the perception of time and sudden bursts of speed or strength can affect an unstable Host. When complete, Nerve Enhancement augments enable a Pilot to react to threats almost instantaneously and have built up the skill to control their lightning-fast movements.
  • Optical Camouflage - This augment can cause intense burning of the skin, changes in tissue pigmentation, and hyper sensitivity to light or darkness during adjustment. Sudden migraines and lack of concentration or inability to distinguish shapes, colors, or distances can affect an unstable Host. When complete, Optical Camouflage enables a Pilot to visually distort the light around them, using superheated atmospheric plasma jets which weave light around the AMOS for a limited time.
  • Flight Pack - This augment can cause sudden nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and in some extreme cases, internal bleeding due to rapid changes in orientation and movement. Sudden loss of orientation and momentum can occur, affecting the ability of an unstable Host to fly. When complete, Flight Packs enable a Pilot to manipulate superheated bursts of heat and plasma to propel themselves through the air for a short time, but must use this ability to also maneuver.
  • Sprint Pack - This augment enables bursts of speed of up to 100kph in much of the same fashion of the Flight Pack, but due to a lack of aerodynamic parts, it cannot sustain flight. Tearing of the muscles, ligaments, and in the most severe cases, dismemberment of affected limbs have been known to occur to unstable Hosts. Sprint Packs use their ability to propel a Host forward while making rapid maneuvers on the ground and surviving falls from great heights.
  • Gravity Boost - This augment was developed to help keep a Host stable or to adhere to specific surfaces based around the controlled manipulation of natural Gravity waves in space. Sudden loss of control of gravity, overcharging of the gravity field, or implosion of specific body parts can occur in unstable hosts. Gravity Boost can additionally shield pilots from taking excessive damage, deflecting or blunting blows from specific directions and can additionally raise the surface tension of liquids and some dense gases.
  • Inertial Damping - This augment was developed to enable a Host to take heavy blows and continue moving. The major drawback to inertial damping occurs when it is uneven or does not work, as found in unstable Hosts. Stable Hosts find that they can move at extremely fast speeds and take sudden acceleration and deceleration without being rendered incapacitated and can survive impacts with fast moving objects, granted that their armor is not first penetrated.
  • Stealth Suite - Whereas the Optical Camouflage Augment was designed as a semi-organic electro-optical camouflage system, the Stealth Suite is an all-sensor camouflage and countermeasure system. Virtually untargetable while active, it requires extensive storage of heat and can cook unstable Hosts alive if improperly used. The Stealth Suite is impervious to targeting or directed cyber warfare attacks, while area of effect weapons will reduce this effectiveness if the system takes damage.
  • Sensor Suite - While the Stealth Suite is designed to provide a Pilot with virtual invisibility, the Sensor Suite grants omnipresence through the implementation and addition of roughly a dozen separate biometric and atmospheric sensors and electro-optical and radio-scanning systems. The result enables a pilot to scan vast portions of the battlefield or specific locations, but this system is highly vulnerable to all forms of damage when in use.
  • Energy Compression - Energy compression is a new concept and highly volatile, but has a high payoff. Having been directly developed by reverse engineering specific recovered artifacts from Generation 1 and 2 Hosts, the Energy Compression Augment enables a Pilot to store up and release bursts of directed energy in the form of a weapon beam. This beam is capable of penetrating most armor, but results in a massive overheating of electronic components and a localized EMP which temporarily immobilizes its user.

Tag.

Hopefully I have time.

Edit: Looks quite complex, but I can figure this out.

Yugoslavia's back baby...

How the hell did this happen?
Well...we don't actually know. Just sort of happened one day.
Is it a reunited Yugoslavia in the 21st century? Is a rebel colony world in the far future? Is it a race of cyborg neo-life at war with any assimilating organisms they come across in the far far future? Who knows, who cares?
New Yugoslavia just is.

Again, if you need any help, let me know. It's not all that difficult and the application is surprisingly easy to fill out. I was planning on actually making Dossiers for all of the primary support characters that could be found within the SIGMA Base of Operations.

What do you mean by dependents?

Edit: So far I'm assuming it means members of my family who give me economic support.

Yes, it's basically those who actually depend upon your character for economic support. It's just a way to give a number to how many people are near and dear to your character while seeming still cold enough for a simple overview of the character at a glance.

Thanks.
Anyway, I'll try my best with all the military related stuff. I'm no expert and you clearly know a lot more then I do.

Feel free to critique this if necessary. Also, I'm planning for him to be a new recruit, so that's why he wasn't involved in Olympus.

Unfortunately a great majority of them are pre-occupied at the moment, which in turn has slowed the RP drastically. I expect a couple may join if you ask them.

So, few things; I'm definitely interested in roleplaying but I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to military backgrounds. Could I get some tips on roleplaying them?

Secondly, how do AMOS units look? Are they exoskeletons similar to MJOLNIR armor from Halo?

Thirdly, there is not a section of our application for our decisions on equipment from the Sigma Armory. Is this because we'll be picking those mission to mission depending on what is necessary?

Ubaria wrote:Done, not sure if i've done the AMOS thing right. I'm a little confused on that front.

Under Sync, you place your total Sync you have been allotted as a character. So if you chose a Block I AMOS Chassis, then you have 300 Sync, and if you chose a Block II Chassis, then you have 200. That is your starting spending, save unless you're trying to get yourself in on ground level as someone whom has already been in SIGMA for a minute, then I'll award extra Sync as seen fit.

A bit of in-world lore: Operation Olympus was effectively the United States Special Operation to take down a massive domestic terror group which had begun to actively carry out a massed attack on government infrastructure and civilian populations to affect US global policy. SIGMA was deployed too thin at every major hot-spot and suffered extensive casualties resulting in almost all 15 of the original AMOS pilots becoming casualties. Most of those 15 did not survive or return to the program and so SIGMA was going to be permanently shuttered. SIGMA managed to pull through only because of extensive support from its international beneficiaries and has now begun recruiting new personnel.

Aidannadia wrote:So, few things; I'm definitely interested in roleplaying but I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to military backgrounds. Could I get some tips on roleplaying them?

Definitely, there's more than enough desire to help on my part and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Secondly, how do AMOS units look? Are they exoskeletons similar to MJOLNIR armor from Halo?
That's roughly the scale and design concept. You can also use the Power Suits from Starship Troopers, Power Armor from Fallout, and anything else roughly in that scale as being appropriately sized and proportioned.

Thirdly, there is not a section of our application for our decisions on equipment from the Sigma Armory. Is this because we'll be picking those mission to mission depending on what is necessary?

Ding Ding! We have a winner! Individual loadout and gear changes from mission to mission, so thus there's not going to be a fixed or 'standard' loadout. This is part of the mission-planning requirement and also having to deal with limited supplies during the extent of a mission. The most standard a loadout you get is the one that is installed to your AMOS, which costs Sync. Sync is effectively experience used to obtain modules, but its written-in lore-wise to be the space of changes your mind could allowably handle occurring to your AMOS and become used to in the course of a 4-6 hour training session.

AMOS use neural, eye, and manually-cued systems which require a lot of self-control and self-discipline on the part of the operators. Never-mind that there is a massive strain on the body and mind when you're stuck in a suit for literal hours, having to overcome the potential claustrophobic effects of having taken damage or being under stress while in that environment.

On that note, onto the applications!

For the personnel application, ensure you've properly capitalized 'AMOS Pilot' as it is a job name and thus a proper noun. Drop the picture size to 200px by 200 px please to better accommodate the size of the thread and the formatting design. Defense branch listing should be Capitalized as it is a Proper noun (so 'British Army' not 'army'). Same with all times it used afterwards. Otherwise, everything else in the application looks great. Now, in regards to your AMOS application, Your total Sync should be 300 or 200 flat depending on your chosen Chassis. No one else has yet been awarded historical sync as no one else has been accepted as a historical SIGMA operator yet. As for your power level, only place the end value. I'll do the kwik-maffs for determining anything else. Otherwise, the application looks fine. I'll make an official acceptance post here in a while when I get back from my friend's place.

For your personnel application, please make sure the 'Last Name, First M:' test is reentered appropriately. You don't have a picture, any reason why? For Defense Branch, I have no idea if the SAS is considered a separate branch of the Armed Forces, or if it is under the British Army. Please limit your Defense Branch to the highest distinct organizational element. Same under the Years of Service (Branch), with having your highest organizational element being present. If the Royal Commandos are separate from the British Army, then you may keep them. I'd also like information on the Tunisian Crisis, Operation Black Torch, and when Captain Asheford would have joined SIGMA to be present in the US for Olympus. The rest of the application looks good.
For Sync, that will be a flat 300 or 200 depending on the Chassis you've chosen, but it appears you're trying to make a historical SIGMA operator. I'll be looking forward to awarding additional historical sync once we've discussed that further. For the Shadow, you'd have 300 Sync currently with your chosen Block I Chassis. Your Power value only needs to show the final amount of Power at the end of it all which would be the full 200 as WPM is not a passive and does not activate until turned on. Additionally include the description for the Smoke Screen Discharger so additional references to the Arsenal don't have to be made. Otherwise, the application looks good and I look forward to our conversation on Captain Asheford's previous involvement in SIGMA.

  • BLUFORCE Tracker Display: Installs software designed to indicate the location of friendly units and their broadcasted status, as well as broadcasting your status and position to all networked friendly units. [-100 Power]

For your personnel application, please ensure you reenter the Last Name, First M: correctly with the name being posted after the prompt. Please resize your image to fit within 200px by 200px to accommodate thread size and formatting. Your Defense Branch would also be the 'Israeli Army' not the 'Israel Army'. For Height, please include the total height in cm and in inches (") as you did in the Weight category. Under Distinguishing Marks, remark 'None' if Sergeant Anom has none, or specify the mark followed by a brief description of where it is (in parentheses). Otherwise, your application looks good.

For your AMOS application, your Sync should be 300 or 200 flat depending on your chosen Chassis. For you, it would be 200 having chosen a Block II Chassis. You additionally have gone over your allotted Sync budget by mounting three Block II Modules. With 200 Sync, you can obtain only one under the instructions posted above the code for creating an AMOS Data Sheet. Power should also be changed to reflect only your total available power. Thermal Optics won't count against this value as they must be activated in order to be considered passively engaged, but the BLUFORCE Tracker however would negatively impact your total power by bringing it 300. This is if you decide to keep one of these two Block II Modules to be your only Module. Otherwise the application looks fine.

I'll get to your application after I get back Aidanna, I've already made my friends wait in their car long enough. Sorry for the delay but I will get back to you. Everyone else, make the needed Edits and I'll include you in my next post.

Needs a personnel application. I'm guessing you already figured that though. As for the AMOS application, Sync is a fixed number like Experience in some games. It shows the maximum potential changes that can be made to a base AMOS Pilot's setup before they likely become mentally broken. Power also needs to be updated to only reflect the total remaining power after passive subtractions. Everything else looks good to me! Looking forward to your personnel application.
