What would you do if you could travel in time?

Postby Geneviev » Wed Oct 09, 2019 9:14 pm

Assume that you found a time machine that gives you the ability to travel into either the future or past in any part of the world. You can use this time machine as often as you would like to. The machine allows you to change the past if you want to, and it also allows you to simply observe it. However, you can not bring things to the present from another time period. The machine doesn't change you while you are travelling.

What would you use the time machine for? Would you try to change the past? Would it be moral to use the machine to change someone else's past?

If I had this time machine, I would first use it to travel to the Roman Republic to be able to see it. After that, I might use it to try to change my past ideas or some of my actions when I was younger if I could.

I think you'll find the Republic dirty and smelly and unsanitary, but you should take video recording equipment to get a record of notable events.

I myself would go back and see opening nights of famous plays and musicals.

Show up to Stephen Hawking's time traveller party and get absolutely wasted with him while talking about the Big Bang.

I'd avoid Ford's theatre around 1865, I went there once and it ruined theatres for me for the next couple of centuries.

Check the future. A hundred years, then a thousand, then a million. (Check a couple hundred quadrillion, too, in case we crack heat death.) Does humanity - or whatever comes after - turn out alright? If things are good enough, I ensure the time loop is closed by giving the time machine to someone else in the knowledge that they send it back to Present Me, and then chill out in future utopia. If things don't turn out well, I probably go into a depressive episode and spend the rest of my life as a hermit in the Cambrian period watching all the cool fish do stuff. I sure as hell don't trust myself with trying to fix history.

"Encourage" Woodrow Wilson not to run for US President in 1912.

Or ever.

Then travel back forwards to observe the results.

After that, I'd go forwards into the future (ideally ours, perhaps involving reversing what I did or just going into the future first to do so) just to see what happens.

When I was in high school, there was a girl I was friends with for ages who was giving me REALLY obvious signals that I missed at the time, so I'd probably go back, slap high school-age me, and tell him to get with her.

Either change some historical event and hope it doesn't butterfly to much, probably something like the world wars or the organization of the middle east( Or make napoleon win). Get better health treatment for my grandparents. Also, see if I'm actually related to those german nobles my other grandparents say we are.

Welcome to The Alpes a Septentrionali Imperium, a nation where I brutalize and adapt Latin and French History to my needs to get my Ultraroyalist Absolutist French Monarchy with a vaguely French-sounding fictional royal family to work.

Don't ask about the flag, it has something to do with RMB RP that I'm involved with.

I would want to meet the Founding Fathers in Philadelphia in 1776 as well as Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Id also want to meet Galileo and Shakespeare. Plus just observe historical events

Terrible things happen to those who meddle with time. If science fiction is any indication its the one thing you do not mess with under any circumstances

i would carefully avoid middle age europe, the roaman empire and the greek.
i would travel ahead to see how long after the environmental collapse for infrastructure to be restored and when form it will subsiquently take.
then back to visit pueblo two and three in chaco canion, and south to witness the construction of the nezca lines.
might be a spectator at rainhill too, and maybe take in a druid ritual at stonehenge or two.
the crowning of the first king of nepal, and meet the ninth dali lama, maybe even sidartha guitama.

hunt for bunyips in the precolonial outback, with a camera that is. protect ufo-naughts from military blunders.
witness all the majore infrastucture firsts, oh and crete before minos.

and cuba before columbus. most of the places i've lived, as the were before then too.

i might try to warn people before genocides, without getting caught up in them, but i somehow doubt that most of them would listen.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

Any future would seem like a horrible future. Even if you don't change anything, there's a lot about the world now that would make it seem better change something.
