FOOTBALL AND VIOLENCE IN PIRAEA
A defeat, a pitch invasion, a riot, and a blemished reputation

Alikianos, Piraea -
Hopes and dreams. The end of a curse. Amathia's first participation in a Coupe de Monde in over 20 years, and the first chance of the Scutierii Roșii to show their best to the entire world. Who would have imagined that it would end like this?
Some might argue that the signs were there from the very beginning. A poor international record over the past few decades has denied Amathian teams the opportunity to play many games abroad, and a similar slow decline of its national football league has kept the games of its team out of the attention of international fans. The behavior of the main Amathian ultras groups is well known especially in Arciluco, where the century-long rivalry between Amathia's finest teams, Citadela Arciluco and Astra Arciluco has often led to riots and clashes between opposing forces of hooligans. Despite that however, the behavior of Amathian fans during the qualifying rounds of the past decade, despite the constant failures of Amathia's national team, has been exemplary - which might excuse the expectations of most foreign observers. Taken over by feverish dreams of Amathia's golden age in football, the fans which left for Piraea had high hopes. Hopes that would soon be dashed.

The first game of the Amathian Eagles in the Coupe du Monde of this generation ended in perhaps the most frustrating way possible a 3-3 draw with Xiaodong, after a tense 90 minutes race which saw both teams hold victory in their grasps several times. The seeds of agitation were planted during this game - and as the game ended, there were a few good moments of unrest in the stands, but the situation seemed to calm down as the Amathian players approached their fans to thank them for their support and their presence. The frustration did however spill over - in the evening, a group of still unidentified Amathian soccer fans got into a fight with some fans from Rwizikuru, a fight during which racist slurs were used, and which led to both groups of fans being kicked out of their hotel. But despite a public apology from Teodor Vulpeș, the manager of the Red Squires, in the name of all fans, no one could have expected the bad side of Amathia's football fans to be revealed the way it was.

The first thirty-four minutes of the game passed without any incidents, as the Amathian team desperately tried to resist the vicious attacks of the Purple Devils. But then, the gates were broken, and Caldia surged forward with a goal from Yahli Benayoun, the team's Tsabaran star. But the flame of hope was only extinguished in the second half of the game. All the Amathian efforts seemed to be in vain, as Caldia dominated the game, the difference between the skills of the two teams being obvious even to an untrained observer. The White-Reds had their only chance to turn the game around early in the second half, but their sole shot on goal was defended by Rónán Ó Flanagáin, the Caldian goalkeeper's only important action. The rest of the game was simply put - a massacre. A second goal followed, when Ó Loingsigh's ball managed to get past Andreescu, but all hell broke loose towards the end of the game.

Pîrvulescu grabbed Benayoun's jersey, and in a highly controversial decision which stopped the game for a few minutes as the Amathians tried to argue with the referee, Caldia was granted a penalty. And while Benyaoun was preparing to shoot the penalty kick, the Amathian supporters began to aggressively chant and shout racial and religious slurs at him, shocking the entire stadium, and the entire world by the sheer scale of it. Despite the Caldian dominance of the pitch, the stands were clearly dominated by the Amathians, with their homeland much closer to Piraea than that of their opponents - and as the entire stadium broke out into violent racist chants, the world was shaken. And the Amathian players were shaken too - as despite their pleas for their fans to behave, and their apologies to their Caldian colleagues, the fans continued to shout.

Benyaoun's third goal finally broke all the hopes that Amathia had to at least earn a draw, and this humiliating defeat really brought the worst out of the fans. As soon as the game ended with the final whistle, violence broke out. A large group of Amathian fans invaded the pitch, trying to attack the Caldian team - while at the same time, in the stands, seemingly well-organized groups of Amathian ultras tried to assault the sections of the stadium occupied by the fans of the Purple Devils. On the field, some of the Amathian players intercepted their own fans, trying to protect the Caldians, and most visible among them was Diegis Iordache, the team's captain, and a player for Scuad Peile Rioga - one of Caldia's leading football teams. Iordache tried to physically stop one of the fans, which led to a fight and to Iordache being punched several times and having to leave the pitch with a bloody nose. As the players were quickly led towards the locker rooms however, the security intervened, and pushed the fans out of the pitch, while those in the stands peacefully left the stadium. But this was only a brief respite.

Outside of the stadium, the main groups of Amathian ultras started coordinated a full-blown riot, destroying cars, breaking windows, setting things on fire and engaging into quite brutal street fights - both among themselves and against other groups of fans that they could intercept, leading to the Piraean police having to intervene in full riot-gear - only being able to disperse them with rubber bullets and tear-gas.

The game's aftermath left the Amathian team confused and ashamed. Not only are their dreams of progressing past the group-stage dependent not only on a victory with Nurvania, but also on the result of Caldia's next game with Xiadong, but the team's reputation was severely affected by the behavior of their fans. Teodor Vulpes, the Amathian manager, repeatedly apologized for the conduct of the fans in a press conference after the game, not mentioning the actual result of the game in any way. "The violent racists walking around the streets can not, in good conscience, call themselves Amathian supporters. Their behavior is a complete betrayal of everything our team stands for, and I would like for Caldia's team and especially for Yahli Benayoun to understand that our team completely and utterly condemns such things. We can only apologize for something that is beyond our control, and we want to wish Caldia's team the best of luck in the Round of 16. And of course, we hope that any future games between our teams will be held away from the shadow that covered tonight's game."

The manager's still relatively calm declaration was however quickly overshadowed by an interview with Diegis Iordache, who in a violent outburst on live TV, heavily condemned all the fans which took part in the racist chanting and in the violent rioting both inside and outside of the stadium. Sadly, the words that he used to describe the fans, and the words that he used to describe what he would do to do the hooligan who punched him can not be reproduced here.

The next week's game against Nurvania will be decisive. The Red Squires still have mathematical chances to move to the next round - a victory against Nurvania and a Caldian victory against Xiaodong would be the best case scenario, but hope exists even in the case of a draw.

Adevărul will continue to keep you posted on the latest events in the Coupe du Monde.

CdM 2019: Etrurian Ultras threaten violence if team fails to progress
Legione Nera and the Lione have threatened to riot if Etruria falls out of the Cup this weekend

Following the tense and nail-bitingly close loss to Narozalica last week, the make-or-break game against Amilia is set to be pivotal in more ways than one. Following the loss to Narozalica, Etruria’s infamous “Ultras” have taken to social media, vowing to “tear the place down” if Etruria fails to proceed to the next stage.
Image
Etrurian fans conducted the "Solarian Salute" when Narozalica was awarded its game-winning penalty,
prompting wide criticism.

In a Coupe de Mond that is already been marred by fan violence, the threat of Etrurian Ultras “ripping up the town” will be met with trepidation among match organisers. It is estimated at least 5,000 of the 15,000 strong Etrurian fan contingent are members of Ultras back home. A majority of whom, hail from the Legione Nera of S.S Solaria and the Lione di San Marco of San Marco-Poveglia. Both Ultra groups are renowned internationally, for their violence and their connections to the Tribune Movement.

Legione Nera’s official social media pages have been flooded with provocative posts, videos and images. In one post, the group said, “our loss to Narozalica is the same as the Marolevs spitting on the graves of every dead Etrurian.” Another re-posted by senior Tribune Movement officials read, “Marolevs want to take our country, and we will stop them. They want to win the Cup; we will stop them.”

After it emerged that for Etruria to proceed to the next stage, Narozalica would need to beat Hennehouwe, Legione Nera began an onslaught against the small northern Euclean country. A series of videos, reportedly produced by the far-right in the country, showed supposed migrants committing crimes and vandalising property, with L.N posting alongside them, “this is the country that we need to lose, its s**t already, so God willing.”

The Lione ultras also attacked Hennehouwe and its team, one post read, “this country has the morals of a street whore and the potential of a rat carrying the plague. Their team should go home now and let a real team and real country progress!”

With the vital matches approaching, both Ultras have gone into overdrive, with Legione Nera threatening violence if Etruria fails to progress, “if we don’t move onto the next stage, the Legion is going to unleash hell. It is not acceptable for a master of the sport to be rigged to lose by the hosts.” The Lione posted, “we have a difficult group, no doubt formulated on purpose by two countries who hate Etruria too much.”

Even non-Ultra fans have been brash on social media, with several popular posts including, “any other Etrurian realised the hosts are two countries who have a weird hatred for Etruria? Considering this group, I wonder…” and, “both these countries claim issues with Etruria for whatever reason, they host and organise. Our group is stacked against us. Coincidence?”

So concerned are some, that Etruria’s FEGC has issued a warning to Etrurian fans, to “not engage in hooliganism and to avoid any instance of hooliganism. This behaviour is not acceptable at international events and will not be tolerated by this association.”

Etruria’s record this Cup has come under intense fire, with many media outlets, right-leaning, unfairly pinning the blame on the two half-Marolevic defenders, Josip Jedvaj and Nikola Skoric. Telegrafo Solariano sparked controversy after it published an editorial claiming both players were “failing in defence because they wanted to see foreign national teams proceeded at the expense of their country.” Another editorial, by the Osservatore Nazionale poured further scorn saying, “it is telling that the full Carinthian, Novalian and Vespasian players are doing their best, those who’s heritage is mixed with peoples from the West aren’t. This may well be something to worry about.”

Etruria’s draw with Hennehouwe at the Cup’s start though less damaging than the loss to Narozalica, resulted in vitriolic grief among the Ultra fans. Etruria’s team played excellently, dominating the Hennish team, but through sloppy attacks and more often, sheer bad luck, failed to capitalise on their repeated attacks on the Hennish goal. The Ultras screamed on social media that the team was “completely f******g useless!”, according to one known Ultra.

The game against Narozalica, which currently leads Group 8, pitted two of the biggest football powerhouses against one another and saw a match marred by dirty tackles and aggressive fan behaviour. The Etrurian fans resorted to insulting chants, with their use of the “Vaffanculo Barbari”; which translates as “f***k off Barbarians” is a common Vespasian slur against Marolevic peoples, used in football, being a predominant fixture of the game. Both teams played excellently, but a late-game penalty awarded to Narozalica due to an illegal tackle by Josip Jedvaj opened the floodgates of attacks on him and Skoric. Not only did the penalty give Narozalica its win, but it unleashed the kind of Ultra behaviour that often brings disrepute upon Etrurian football.

Both Legione Nera and the Lione have dark histories in Etruria. Both stand as the oldest ultra-groups in the country, and are known to engage in hooliganism and violence, which on 14 occasions since 1980, led to murder trials. Both groups have also had suspected ties to organised crime, though since, their primary claim to fames have been overt ties to the Tribune Movement. In both the 2016 and 2018 elections, the two Ultra groups were accused of attacking opposition party activists in the street. Three Legione Nera members were sentenced to prison for an arson attack on a Democratic Alternative office in Turania in 2018.

Foreign Minister Gianfranco Galizia has posted images of himself with members of both Ultras, while President Francesco Carcattera has a framed letter from Legione Nera members praising his leadership and the Tribune Movement’s politics.

THE BEST START IN GIBANY'S HISTORY

Image
Gibany holds the best campaign so far in the competition.
Kissamos, Piraea - Gibany have the best start in a Coupe du Monde in the history of the nation team. The co-hosts have scored a total of nine goals in two games, only conceding one, making it both the best attack and the best defense so far in the group stage. Center-back Vedad Bajrić and leftwinger Filip Hrsak are the two lead scorers for the Red and Blacks, both with two goals under their belts. From the beginning, Gibany was considered to be placed in one of, if not the thoughest group, facing the sides of Werania, Senria and Mathrabumi. So far, Gibany has two wins; a 3-1 against Werania and an astonshing 6-0 over Senria. The co-hosts lead group two with six earned points, a goal-difference of eight goals, and granted access to the round of 16.

The first game was against the northern Euclean side of Werania, considered by many as the toughest oppenent in the group. Impressively, Gibany did not stand back; on the contrary, the Red and Blacks attacked Werania fearlessly in the first minutes of the game, resulting in a home scoreline of 2-0 in 15 minutes, both goals booked by Filip Hrsak. Not long after that, Iyambo scored to reduce Gibish's advantage to 2-1. However, the co-hosts did not stop the pressure (supported by an amazing game of possession) and, in the 79' minute of game, Vedad Bajrić headers the ball into the net after a corner kick.

The second game, however, was a stroll. Gibany did not take notice of Senria and did what they wanted with the ball in Kissamos. Captain Tomislav Škrlec opened the scoreline right on the 4' minute of game. Once again, the scorer'center'back Vedad Bajrić headed the ball into the net once again for a 2-0. Besir Gajić and Ibrahim Janković sealed a first'half 4-0 victory for Gibany. On the 64' minute of game, Senad Sarić converted another goal for a 5-0, while the youngster Hrvoje Ivošević finished burrying Senria 7-inches down the Giannis Amanatidis Stadium's field.

Thus far Gibany holds the best campaign among all 32 teams, with two victories and nine scored goals. Gibany's next deed, however, is against winless Mathrabumi, at the Hersonissos Stadium. As a way to preserve some of the important players for the round-of-16, manager Hazim Ferhatović may use a mixed starting XI. The probable starting squad for this Friday's match will be: Kenan Hadžić, Musa Sarajlić, Vedad Bajrić (C), Kasim Lazić, and Irfan Milanović; Marijan Turkalj and Matija Mauzer; Vanja Čabraja, Zdenko Lisica, Bahrudin Čejvan, and Hrvoje Ivošević on the front.

IF THE TEAM DOESN'T ADVANCE, WHO'S TO BLAME?
If Werania can't beat Senria it would confirm that the Red Lions need new management
SHAREImage Image Image Image

5 October 2019 |Alikianos, Piraea

Image
Karl Iyambo with Justas Kvitkauskas.

Alikianos, Piraea - The 2019 Coupe du monde has mixed to Werania. In the two matches fought so far the Red Lions were soundly beaten by Gibany before scoring a welcome victory over Mathrabumi. Not a bad score so far to be clear - the traditionally hard to beat Etruria have so far had a dismal Coupe and if the team beats Senria then we'll be through to the next stage. But it would be a hollow victory and not a promising one to advance through.

Part of the blame has to be assigned to team captain Hans-Jürgen Hollmann whose substitution of defender Holger Grünberger with Dmitrijus Chvedukas during the first Gibany-Weranic game was a mistake that likely cost us the game and has put Werania on the backfoot during the match.

As well as that Gibany has had a surprisingly good Coupe having scored big wins in all their matches so far. To that extent it can be said that Werania has simply been unlucky this year - a view that may be vindicated with a convincing win against Senria.

But it likely stands to reason that manager Fabian Görlitz is the main reason for Werania's anaemic performance. We have observed before that Werania's strong rivalry between league clubs means that coordinating the Weranic team is the top priority for the Weranian manager. Görlitz's predecessor, Wolfgang Bercht, understood this well and always ensured that the lineup maximised team compatibility and downplayed club tensions. Görlitz however has failed to grasp this and to boot has promoted an old style of football totally out-of-sync with other teams.

There is hope though. Our main strikers, Karl Iyambo and Manfred Neumann have so far turned in impressive performances alongside midfielder Werner Kleppinger and defender Rainier Ambambi. If in the game against Senria we come out on top the current course could be rectified - if not there is no choice but for Görlitz to go.

Xiaodong is ready to face Caldia

The Xiaodongese team

AFTER a draw and a loss, hopes are low for Xiaodong's game against Caldia - but if Xiaodong wins, it will advance to the next stage.

The stakes are high for the Xiaodongese team which has only recently seen association football explode in popularity following a surprisingly good run a decade ago. But the Xiaodongese team has never reached such heights since and so expectations are muted despite a push in recent days to get into the next stage.

"We know Caldia is a good team and we know that we need to get a win in the bag to advance into the next round" manager Chen Yongzhi said to the press today.

"But as we know in this game anything is possible and if we ensure that our team has the support of the entire country that we can beat Caldia and bring home glory both to the team and Xiaodong as a nation".

Fans are hoping that a Xiaodongese win on Friday may make Xiaodong one of the few Coian countries to advance in a game dominated by Eucleans and Asterians. As such many are gunning for the star player, striker Xi Chengji, to work his magic and score a decisive victory for the Xiaodongese team.

"There's some who don't want us to advance because we aren't Euclean" a fan named Chen today the East Sea Daily. "Look at the Amathian fan violence in the last match - if we beat Caldia and advance into the next round they will be super pissed and attempt to trash stuff up".

"I think if we win it'll not just be huge for Xiaodong but also to Coius in general, and that's why I think the team needs to be motivated and ready to score a big victory on Friday".

Another fan, Qiu, also said that as Caldia has a place locked down for the next round "you are going to see a difference in passions".

"If Caldia wins that's just a good headline for their team. But if we win that changes the tournament up as we will be advancing into the next round and Amathia and Nuvania not. So really its all about the difference in points in terms of who gets to advance making this a really close game".

Some fans however are urging caution at getting to excited for the match.

"Do I want Xiaodong to win? Of course, but we have to be realistic" Jiang said. "If we don't advance that's not to surprising as we haven't won a match yet. We have to take into account that Caldia is a really strong team and so disappointment is unfortunately a real possibility".

Nevertheless manager Chen is upbeat about the teams chances, saying Xiaodong has "learnt from our mistakes".

"Yes the game with Amathia was to close. Yes Nuvania took us by surprise. But we know how Caldia works now and how we can best exploit that knowledge will be absolutely key to whether we win this, which I can safely say we have a good shot of doing".

Proud to support the team in #2019coupe but have to consider if the game is being rigged against Xiaodong - its entirely possible given the current anti-xiao sentiment across euclea

Hoping #xiaoteam wins against Caldia in #2019coupe - however worried a potential win may be politicised by the government - we have to remember supporting the team isn't supporting the government!

RWIZIKURU DEFEATS THE ORDENNYANS 3-0
Not enough to save the maVarvi, but the victory will inspire celebrations
Image
The Rwizikuran football team before departing for Piraea

Watida Muchena | 4 OCTOBER, 2019 18:26 | HERSONISSOS, PIRAEA

After the two defeats, with a 1-3 loss to the Yocatullic Wave Warriors, and a 1-4 loss to the Gaullican Crusaders, it has become increasingly obvious that the Rwizikuran maVarvi were eliminated from the Coupe du monde. This has made the recent victory over the Ordennyan side a breath of relief, when Rwizikuru scored 3-0, although this is not enough to save the maVarvi, who were mathematically eliminated after the defeat by Gaullica.

The match began, with the Ordennyans having the upper hand, with the Ordennyans attempting to score a goal at the eleven minute mark. However, this only awakened the fire in the maVarvi, with Tendeka Majange scoring a goal at the twenty-eight minute mark, giving the Rwizikurans an upper hand 1-0. At the fourty-second minute mark, Sikarudzi Croome scored a second goal, with the Rwizikuran maVarvi holding a 2-0 advantage by the end of the first half.

During the second half, the Ordennyans tried desperately to score against the maVarvi, with each attack against the Ordennyans was met with a fierce counterattack by the Ordennyans, and in response, the maVarvi stopped these attacks with substantial effectiveness. Att the eighty-seventh minute, Croome scored the third goal for Rwizikuru, which allowed Rwizikuru to finish the match 3-0 over the Ordennyans.

Following the match, manager Oswald Hallam told reporters that "we have finally redeemed ourselves. After having been mathematically eliminated, over the past week, the maVarvi have been training to try and give this their all. As a result of our efforts, we have managed to counter the assaults made by the Ordennyan national team, and therefore have won a single match."

Hallam said that "while we are disappointed that we will not be advancing into the Group of Sixteen, we are delighted to have made ourselves known, and that over the next four years, we fully intend to train the maVarvi into a fighting force, so we can break out of the group stages in the twentieth edition of the Coupe du monde."

"And God willing, we shall face the Nasanis in 2023," Hallam declared.

Jaguars players celebrate after captain Tiaan Meyer's second goal.

For the first time ever, the Jaguars have made it into the knockout stages of the Coupe du Monde, sending fans into the streets in what has been the biggest celebration of a sporting achievement since the Pumas last won the Rugby World Cup.

However the Jaguars did not win against a patchy Amathia but rather secured their placement through a better goal difference between them and the Amathians after a four all draw in one of the most tense and closest matches the Jaguars have ever played.

The match began with a strong Amathian attack that hammered the Nuvanian defence, and the Jaguars quickly conceded a goal off the head of Amathian captain Diegis Iordache, which sent the Amathian fans into a wild frenzy. Iordache's goal was followed six minutes later by one from center-forward Ivica Trkulja, who belted one past Jaguares goalkeeper Jason Cooper. Trkulja's goal was one of the most remarkable of the tournament thus far, having managed to penetrate the Jaguar's defensive line almost single handedly. Towards the end of the first half, Nuvania started to press the attack, and four minutes before the end of the first half, the Jaguars managed to pass one behind Amathian goalkeeper Roles Cristea, at the skilled feat of team captain Tiaan Meyer.

The second half could only be described as chaotic, as both sides scrambled to press the attack against one another. It started off badly for the Jaguars with defender Danie Naudé red-carded after a dangerous tackle against Amathian attacker Silviu Cuțov, who was escorted off the field by fellow teammates. Cuțov was replaced by Momčilo Krsmanović, who promptly awarded himself a yellow card for holding onto the shirt of Jaguars attacker Nicolaas van Wyk, and was temporarily sin binned for his efforts. With both sides down one player, the match became even more frantic. Both of these actions resulted in successful penalty kicks for both teams, with the score halfway through the second half 3-2. Foward center Alexandru Oștenescu took Amathia's third goal, and Jaguars captain Tiaan Meyer took Nuvania's second goal of the match, and his third of the tournament.

Krsmanović was allowed back on towards the end of the second half which produced some of the more frantic with more desperate play. However, it would be Amathia who would extend their lead first, with Oștenescu scoring his second goal of the match to put the Red Squires up 4-2 with ten minutes to go.

Amathia's place in the Round of 16 looked secure until a surprise run by midfielders Sebastian van Heerdens and Maarten Goodman opened up the Amathian defence for forward Nicolaas van Wyk to have a strike at goal. He was successful, and Nuvania inched closer to achieving what looked to be the impossible.

With just three minutes to go, disaster struck for the Nuvanians when a similar dangerous tackle to that committed by Naudé was prompted against right midfielder and deputy captain Nico Pasch by Amathian midfielder Theodor Babeș, and Nuvania was awared a penalty. Meyer passed the opportunity to score onto fellow forward and second deputy captain Ruan Vosloo. Vosloo belted the ball past the hands of Cristea and into the back of the net, scoring Nuvania's fourth goal of the match and sending both sides into an absolute frenzy.

However the celebrations were marred by acts of violence, with Amathian fans attempting to storm the pitch after the game had ended, prompting Piraean police and security personnel to enter the stadium en masse and disperse the fans, at times prompting the use of tear gas cannisters. Nuvanian fans said that there was "absolute chaos", with some subject to attacks by both Amathian fans and Piraean police, the latter likely mistaken identity.

Coach Willem van de Walt said that the events after the end of the match marred what was the most remarkable football match he had witnessed in his three decade career.
"I honestly haven't seen anything like it," he said. "I still can't believe that it happened at all, let alone the fact that we probably played the best game of football in this country's history." van de Walt said that he was "immensely proud of his boys" and said that they deserved every accolade.
"They've done this country proud."

van de Walt also said that to make it this far for a team like Nuvania was an achievement in of itself, but now that the team faced a very real chance of elimination, he said that there was a lot more work ahead of them.
"While we can reflect on this triumph, we also need to focus on the future, especially on the next match."

The Jaguars will face neighbours and Asterian footballing giants Vilcasuamanas in their Round of 16 match. The Vilcasuamanian team have gone undefeated in their pool matches, beating Florena 6-3, Estmere 1-0, and Kazaristan 1-0. The Jaguars have had numerous encounters with the Vilcasuamanian team at both friendlies and at the Asterian Cup. Since 2000, Nuvania has played 17 matches against Vilcasumanas, and have lost 15 of those matches, with two nil-all draws. The last time the Nuvanians won against Vilcasuamanas was in a pool play match at the 1993 Asterian Cup, where Nuvania won 2-1.

Captain Tiaan Meyer said that he was "amazed" by the outcome of the match and excited to advance beyond pool play, but said that the team now had the task of trying to overcome the Vilcasuamanians.
"They're an extremely good team and we're going to be in for a hard and fast game," he said. "We're hoping for a miracle, they seem to be happening a lot this year."

CAN LES CROISÉS MAKE IT A FIFTH WORLD CUP VICTORY?
Gaullica entered the competition as the reigning World Champions, but can they maintain this prestigious position?

Verlois, Gaullica

'Les Croisés' have entered the Coupe de monde with a strong showing, yet perhaps one that was under-whelming to some fans. When they won in 2015, Roland Varne was held as a managerial hero; a legend and towering manager who led his team to concede no goals in a highly anticipated final against Estmere. The 2-0 victory that saw the Gaullicans add the fourth star to their medal left an impression that Varne's Crusaders would take the next cup by storm as well. The team was young and hopeful, proud and with honour to defend. Varne, a keen mind and stable thinker - not to crack under pressure.

But has is this reality, or a fantasy for the Gaullicans to have in the joint-held Coupe of this year? Indeed, the Crusaders have performed strongly against Rwizikuru and the Celestial Isles. Yet by all statistical accounts these matches were obvious victories. When it came to the only team within Group 7 that posed a semblance of a challenge for the champions, their attacks fell through, their defence circumnavigated and a measly equalised goal was all between that and defeat.

Four times have the Gaullicans won the Coupe de monde: 1951, 1971, 2003 (The Great Victory, as it was called, as Gaullica was the host) and as aforementioned, 2015. Each time with the exception of the last, similar arguments were made: the team was young and strong, potent and willing, with honour to defend. And no consecutive victory was achieved? Can Varne, who's successes across the Gaullican, Estmerish, Weranian and Etrurian leagues be up to snuff? And can the team, who easily breezed through 'simple competition', be ready to face off against a formidable coupe de monde winner in their own right?

The team believes it is ready. Varne has said numerous times, even here at exclusives with Le Monde, that this coupe is 'again for the taking.' He has stressed that the team is more than capable at achieving a consecutive world cup victory, "becoming historic giants, in a fifth victory for Gaullica. A testament to sporting prowess, fitness and health."

Gaullica will be up against Senria next. Tensions have the possibility of running high. Max Sartre, who's parents were both from Jindao (a Gaullican immigrant father and a Xiadongese woman), actively expressed disappointment in the failings of Xiadong at the cup. His comments were kept in check by the squad, but biases and expectations were there. Already fears have arisen that his playing could heighten tensions between the two groups, or even Gaullica and Senria.

But, perhaps not everything is so bleak. Why cannot this be the team to do what its forebearers have been unable? The captain, Giroud, is a renowned player. Evidenced from not just his conduct, but his style, he is a captain perhaps like none other. And his squad is strong. No substantial injuries have been met by the players yet. All have been well behaved under the ever-watching eye of Roland Varne. Perhaps this time is the time we shall be consecutive winners, after all?

And if not, perhaps the mentality of some interviewed fans is the best to take: "As long as Estmere and Etruria don't win, we've won!" But that's not really true sportsmanship, is it?

Naumov celebrates after scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win against Hennehouwe.

Narozalica cruise through group stages
Modya Naumov scored a header to see Narozalica through Group H with an impeccable record
Bobr Andreyevich reporting from Bassania, Gibany
October 9, 2019

Many fans of the Narozalic national team had high hopes for the team going into the 2019 Coupe du Monde, but it was up in the air as to whether the team would even qualify from what some football commentators had dubbed the toughest in the tournament, studded with Euclean star teams such as the likes of Etruria and Hennehouwe. Few could have expected the team to exit the group stages on October 4 with an impeccable record, 3 wins, 9 points, joining Gibany, Vilcasuamanas and Caldia as one of the four teams who graduated from the group stages boasting nine points. Hefty praise has been heaped on the Narozalic team, but especially so for left-winger Anton Balabanov, who entered the team for the first time in 2018 after a stunning season with Narozalic team Dokha Tozan. Balabanov contributed to a total of 5 goals, scoring 3 (including 2 against Etruria) and assisting 2. The 23-year-old is eligible for the IFF Young Player of the Tournament award, given to outstanding players under the age of 24, and is currently looking like a front-runner to receive the prestigious award.

Early doubts were present when Narozalica conceded one goal against low-ranked Aimilia, but eventually won the game 2-1 owing to a spectacular 30-yard strike from Modya Naumov in the 88th minute, securing the Narozalic team's first win and their ascension to first in the group stage after both Etruria and Hennehouwe dropped points as their game neutered to an uneventful 0-0 draw. Hope followed soon after as Narozalica triumphed over Etruria in a 3-2 victory that many did not see coming, with a star performance from the aforementioned Young Player of the Tournament candidate Anton Balabanov. The performance put Narozalica on six points, two clear of Hennehouwe in second after they scraped a 1-0 win against Aimilia, and five clear of an Etrurian team in crisis, who had dropped down to third, three behind Hennehouwe, as a result of the 3-2 loss. Etrurian ultra-fans had even threatened violence and civil unrest across Gibany and Piraea if the team failed to qualify from the group stage. Narozalica, however, had calmed, with their five-point advantage over Etruria guaranteeing them qualification into the round of 16.

Tension was high going into the final match of Group H, with Etruria requiring a decisive win over bottom-of-the-table, 0 point Aimilia, but also requiring Narozalica to triumph over Hennehouwe in their game. The tension and stress on the backs of the Etrurian players were quickly lifted as the team scored two quick goals to pick up a 2-0 lead by the 20th minute, ultimately cruising to a 4-0 victory by employing a casual counter-attacking defensive formation to deny Aimilia goals but also to quickly break and score their own. The hopes of 66 million Etrurians rested in the hands of Bobka and his Narozalic team, who rose to the challenge against Hennehouwe as Naumov again scored in the 61st minute to see Narozalica through to the knockout stages with 9 points in hand - a confident start from the Sergeants.

As is tradition with the Coupe, the winner of Group H is to play the second-placed team in Group A, in 2019's case, this landed Narozalica's first opposition as host nation Piraea. A tough matchup as the southern Euclean nation had held out for a 0-0 draw against group-toppers Chervolesia. It is expected that Bobka will enter the first knockout clash with the same lineup that started the group stages, a holding 4-3-3, with no significant injuries or illnesses being reported from the Narozalic dressing rooms.

GOING UNDEFEATED, CALDIA'S MEN LOOK TO CONTINUE THE TREND IN THE KNOCKOUTS

The Devils in Purple secured the top spot in their group after besting Xiaodong 2-1 on Saturday at Independence Stadium.

DROSJA – Caldia will face off with Estmere on Saturday in the first stage of the Coupe due monde's knockouts. Players and supporters alike have high hopes for the Devils in Purple going forward, who have yet to be defeated and whose iron wall defense have only let one score on goal pass.

Preparing to face off with Estmere, which is a traditional powerhouse of Euclean football, the team has been practicing in Drosja, Gibany in the run up to Saturday's game. The match will take place at 17:00 EST at Drosja's Stadion Invuctus Monumental. It is the last game in the Round of Sixteen before the Coupe moves on to the Quarterfinals next Thursday.

Despite the usual strength of the Estmerish team, which has two Coupe victories under its belt, the Caldish men remain optimistic. Head coach Faolán Ó Seoigh has promised that his Devils in Purples are ready to take on Estmere.

"We have had our strongest showing at any Coupe the [Caldish] men have ever participated in, we have learned from our successes and the challenges we have faced on the pitch. Our boys are ready for Saturday, and they will play the best football we know they can".

Caldia advanced through the group stages undefeated, coasting to victory of Nuvania, Amathia, and Xiaodong. With eight goals for the Devils and only one against, they are among the best performing teams so far in this year's Coupe. Gibany leads the pack, with Narozalica, Vilcasuamanas, and Caldia close behind. In Caldia's own group, Nuvania also advanced following its victory over Amathia.

Despite the team's performance, Ó Seoigh warned that his team was "ready for anything" and knew that the "group stages were over, this is all or nothing now".

The team traveled from Alikianos on Monday evening and arrived in Drosja early Tuesday morning, taking to the pitch to begin practicing late yesterday afternoon.

Captain Aodhán Ó Loingsigh told reporters that he was "proud of his teammates" and knows "they have what it takes to advance".

"The knockouts are serious, we will face teams with a much more celebrated history than our own. That only adds to our drive to perform".

Estmere's team, known as the Crosses, only squeaked through the group stage. Their early draw with Karzaristan set them back in their group. Vilcasuamanas, who made it through the group stage undefeated, best Estmere. The Estmerish Crosses did pull out a crucial victory over Florena, securing their spot in the Round of Sixteen. However, their 1-1-1 record means their performance is secondary to the 3-0-0 Devils. The Estmerish men only scored one goal for their team in the three matches of the group stage.

Given the lackluster opening for the Estmerish, the Caldish men are hoping to capitalize off of this and secure another victory on Saturday. Support for the Devils in Purple has grown throughout the nation, with pubs stacked with fans during matches and an increased number of Caldish fans traveling to Piraea and Gibany to watch the matches live. The 2019 Coupe could be a crucial breakout moment for the men, whose popularity are dwarfed by the Caldish women's team and the popularity of the native Tenic football.

Should the team advance to the Quarterfinals, the Devils would have made it the farthest the Caldish men have ever made it in a Coupe du monde competition.

However, the contest has not gone on without controversy. Center-forward Yahli Benayoun was targeted by racist and Atudophobic abuse from Amathian fans during the 28 September match at Alikianos' Independence Stadium. After the match, Amathian fans attempted to burst onto the field to attack the Caldish team, with Amathian players coming to the defense of their follow footballers and trying to keep their fans back. Amathian fans began to riot once out of the stadium, destroying property and harassing the Piraean capital until riot police were deployed to quell the violence. Hundreds were arrested and the IFF has announced an investigation into the matter, threatening any team whose supporters engage in violence with disqualification from the Coupe.

With the drama of the past behind them, the Caldish men look to the future with high hopes and strong chances.

Coupe de Monde

Cassier to face Sanslumiere in the first knockout round Friday

Thousands of fans journeyed to Euclea to support the team during the group stage, with many more expected to arrive in Alikianos, Piraea during Independence Day weekend.

ALIKIANOS - Despite the doubts of both amateur fans and professional sport commentators Cassier's men's soccer team has managed to hold fast amidst a turbulent group stage and progress to the first knockout round. Due to play Sanslumiere this Friday at Independence Stadium in Alikianos, Piraea, the men's team has been reportedly "preparing diligently" for a tough game.

Cassier's performance at the 2019 Coupe de Monde thus far has been average, with the team managing to go 1-1-1 and acquire 4 points in the group stage. While not the team's best showing in the Coupe de Monde fans and international spectators have been quick to praise and support "Le Blues".

"It sounds like I'm bandwagoning, but it is charming, really. I never expected them to get this far" one Cassien fan commented. "Someone probably should of told them that bringing hockey sticks onto the pitch is not allowed, though".

Though the number of goals scored this year has been lackluster the strength of Cassier's defensive line in the latter half of the group stage which has been able to shut out any further goals after the initial 3-1 loss to Brosia.

"They've done a great job" Head Coach Barbeau commented after Cassier's 2-0 victory last Saturday. "That being said though, we are going to use the down time before the game this Saturday to the fullest and shore up where our centre and forward lines may of been lacking".

"We're keeping our heads clear and taking it one game at a time" Captain Rapace said before practice this Monday, stating that "We're going to have a strong game, give the world a great game of soccer, and walk out with our heads high no matter the outcome".

Off and outside the soccer pitch many on social media have praised Cassien fans in particular, which have widely striven to maintain positive spirits and courteous attitudes throughout their stay in the host countries and cities. In comparison to some of the other nations and fans who have come to support their respective nation's teams Cassier's have thus far managed to progress through the tournament with almost no controversy, with only minor offenses being reported by local law enforcement.

While many back at home have called into question the need for the displays of such blatant nationalistic pride which has been noticeably more prevalent this year this has been widely disregarded as nothing but "harmless fun".

"As far as I'm concerned, as long as good behaviour is maintained and the fans bear in mind that they are guests, I see no issue in letting them wave their flags and wear the colours proudly" Prime Minister Tremblay stated during a press conference. "We do it at the Olympics, what's the difference here?"

"The difference is that we as snow people actually have a chance at winning on ice and snow" an online comment retorted. "Last I checked we can't exactly skate on grass".

ADVANCE ELDMARK!
Despite a scary start to the game, Eldmark rallied and beat Habasha, advancing to the knockout stage. Now, they face Swetania.

The Eldmark team celebrates their narrow but satisfying victory over Habasha.

Alikianos, Piraea

If it would be possible to visualize the amount of breath held in Eldmark and in Alikianos by Eldmarsk fans, it would possibly be enough to affect the global oxygen output by a slim but measurable number. The draw against Sanslumiere meant only one thing, and that for Eldmark's hopes of being this year's winner to continue to stay alive, the Lions would only have to do one thing: Beat Habasha. That's beat, not draw, not lose. And in the first few minutes against the lions of Habasha, it was initially evident this catfight would end well... for Habasha. Eldmark's iron defense cracked within 5 minutes of play, putting Habasha up by one, setting a pace and a mood that Eldmark struggled all night to change. For the remainder of the half Eldmark kept Habasha from scoring any more, but was scoreless themselves.

Things had to change in order for the Lions to advance victorious.

Manager Hakon stated in a halftime interview that "Habasha plays their cards very close to their chest, so we have to redraw our plays to reflect that." And redraw they did. At 50 minutes, Samuel Xi'a scored a goal tying up the game, followed by another from Afzelius at 62 minutes. Habasha responded with a goal from Tesfaye at 77 minutes, briefly tying it up, but a goal from Hammarström at 82 minutes and two blocks from Ekman sealed Eldmark's seat-clinching victory. Now with two wins and a draw under their belts, Eldmark now is faced with an opponent that has a similar score. Two wins. One draw. 6 points. Swetania's team, the Black Arrows, have beaten Brosia and Montecara, though Montecara came back in a later game to force a draw against them. At this stage, a loss is a trip back home, which would, given Eldmark's past, not be out of place. Now in the round of 16, Eldmark must fight to survive in a field of increasingly talented candidates. While the Lions are traditionally competitive, even dominant in Asterian play, Euclean and Coian matches have always came with it an air of suspense. Though, there is significant reason to remain faithful in our Lions. Manager Hakon remains confident, stating "I am more than proud of the performance of our team, and the drive and determination they show to come out on top. A good team will win. A great team will find the way to win when a win is hopeless." The odds remain divided, with some analysts giving Eldmark a narrow edge, others choosing Swetania. Regardless, the margins are tight in any case. "We take it as a challenge" Bartolomeo Moller said, fresh from enjoying a jog off the pitch, shortly before boarding a plane for Gibany's Stadion Slobode. "With every second we give our best, something bets can't account for." It is of course uncertain whether or not Eldmark will be able to best the Black Arrows, though if one thing is certain, it will be a game to watch out for.

FROM THE DESK OF THE RIGHT HONORABLE ÖRJAN REHN
PRIME MINISTER OF THE KINGDOM OF ELDMARK

To our national football team and their fans,

With this letter I would like to personally congratulate you for your dedication, grit, and character you so wonderfully shown in your rise to the Group of 16. Your hard work has paid off, but now you cannot simply rest. Soon you will face Swetania in Gibany, and we are all watching and wishing for your victory in that match. May your feet carry you to greatness, may your mind be clear and your wit be about you. You have already shown mountains of courage and dedication - You must continue to do so. Let our confidence and our pride in you serve as a reminder to advance our nation's colours to the highest point, and with your talent and determination, return home victorious as champions. Our faith is in you.

To the fans of this proud team, remember you represent not only the pride and history of Eldmarsk football, but you represent the Kingdom of Eldmark herself. It troubles me that other nations struggle with violent clashes in a display of gross national chauvinism, that only leads them to shame and regret. Take their mistakes as a warning. Revel in your team's victories, but do not rebel in their losses. Do not fall into temptations from other fans to respond to their rancor, show not any rancor of your own, and above all else, remember that upon you rests a heavy duty to represent the Kingdom with utmost decency.

I am proud of all of you. Avancera Lejon!

Sincerely,
