Greta Thunberg: Enviromental Activist or Forced Puppet?

Postby Mizialand » Wed Oct 02, 2019 10:37 am

The recently concluded UN Climate Action Summit has brought into limelight Greta Thunberg, a 16 year old Swedish climate activist. She gave an impassioned speech criticizing politicians for their inaction on climate change. This speech, while drawing praise and commendation, has also invited criticism on the following grounds:

1. Suffering from Asperger's syndrome and being a minor with no formal academic background in Environmental Studies, the attention that Greta has received from the media attention has resulted in unfortunate and unintended consequences such as the focus being on her personal self instead of the cause she is raising.

2. Her speech has been criticized as "overacting" with Greta acting on the directions of her parents merely for monetary and publicity purposes.

3. She was asked what kind of message would she like to give to world leaders. Her inability to answer raises question about her understanding of the matter.

I think that this case has become one of "blaming the messenger". Though what she intends to convey is deserving of serious attention, the focus has been on herself rather than her message.

What is your opinion? Can she be a genuine activist or is it a case of parents forcing their child into activism for money and publicity?

It's really more of the dumb shit she says like how her childhood was ''destroyed''.
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

As I have said before: The points that Greta Thunberg makes are not invalid and have indeed been repeated by scientists and leftish politicians for a number of decades. My main concerns are with her school attendance record - although I will undoubtedly be Omared on that point - and just how she became so famous in so little time with little more than a bit of paper and an entry to a Swedish essay competition.

She's a genuine activist (she's been doing this a lot longer than just the Climate Strikes that popped up recently). She's a bit misguided (given the target of her ire seems to be the party responsible for 9% of the world's pollution while she safely ignores the countries responsible for 57% of it) but she's genuine.

What a crock of shit. She's been campaigning for ages on this. By all means critique her message for sure, but the whole "OMG she's a puppet of the super sekrit invent climate change club" is a bucket of lukewarm wank.
As an editor I seam to spend an awful lot of thyme going threw issues and checking that they're no oblivious errars. Its a tough job but someone's got too do it!

Well what I am saying is that I think she’s not really a great face for the climate change problem becuase she herself has little understanding of the issue. While she criticises she does not really offer any solutions neither does she campaign for a specific policy.

Here's the entire quote, actually. Context is important.
"This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be standing here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to me for hope? How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!"

As for my opinion, I do believe Greta is a genuine activist and is doing great work. She is smart enough to voice her own thoughts and comment on others. Honestly, I think people should be more focused on the message rather than the messenger. Climate change is a real, active threat, and it will drastically change the world around us unless we do something, like it or not.

The UN summit only brought her into the limelight in right-leaning media. She's already been focused on extensively both outisde the US and in centrist and left-leaning media. The only difference with this newest event is that some people (and they know who they are) are starting to get butt-hurt.

There's a couple things that should be clarified here.
1) She's got Asperger's. She's pretty much incapable of acting at all, let alone overacting. Asperger's makes you pretty much blind to social cues that would enable you to be believable. And, as nearly every parent of a child with Asperger's will tell you (I am one, and I have one), it is EXTREMELY difficult to get them to do anything they don't see a direct and immediate need to do. The claim that she is somehow being forced to do this is laughable at best, and simply shows an ignorance of, well, everything in general.
2) This is not a new topic. Claims about her and her parents have been raised before, and all debunked. Examples:
    https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/thunberg-actress-estella-renee/
    https://aosfatos.org/noticias/texto-nas-redes-sociais-traz-informacoes-falsas-sobre-pais-de-greta-thunberg/
    https://piaui.folha.uol.com.br/lupa/2019/09/25/verificamos-greta-terrorista/
    https://correctiv.org/faktencheck/gesellschaft/2019/06/13/greta-thunberg-keine-belege-fuer-systematische-pr-kampagne-der-eltern-und-eines-unternehmers/

Google Translate (or any other web translation service if you're a paranoid delusional individual) will give you the English for these.

I'm sure this is not going to change anyone's mind, especially not here, where objectivity holds a distant backseat to each person's chosen echo chamber. Believe what you want to believe. It's not going to make any difference in the end, because the facts always win in the end.

Her message basically boils down to "Listen to what scientists have been saying for the last few decades and actually do something about it."

You don't need to have a PHD to grasp that. Many, many, very well educated people have been saying that for a very, very long time and they've largely been ignored.

Like I said, this bullshit controversy is a crock of shit. Or bucket of lukewarm wank. Take your pick.

Basically this.

I've been telling what ms.Thunberg says for decades. I wasn't able to get one millionth of the audience she's getting. You know what? I'm happy she's getting it, because my purpose was not about MYSELF getting heard, but about my message getting through. She's getting my message through better than I ever could, so, thank you, ms. Thunberg, and that's it.

By the way, has anyone already mentioned the Bilderberg club/Kalergi plan/whatever? If not, I'm disappointed.

I like how NSG ignored Greta Thunberg for months until she arrived to the UN summit despite media shilling hard for it. Like really 24/7.

People have finally realised climate change is an actual thing that puts our actual lives at risk and will actually start to affect people in the developed world soon. All the weird ghouls on the right have left is concern trolling. That's all this bullshit really amounts to.
