The Cold War

"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent"
-Winston Churchill

The year is 1949. The Berlin Blockade, an attempt by the Soviet Union to take complete control of Berlin, has ended. Tensions are now high only four years after the most devastating war the world has ever seen, and with the USSR testing their own nuclear weapon, war is once again on the horizon. With the future of the war uncertain, it is up to you to shape how events turn out. The struggle between Capitalism and Communism has the possibility to result in the end of humanity. Every choice you make will cause ripple effects down the line.

History: The timeline for now is the same as the real world. You can make your own fictional country if you want. POINT OF DIVERSION FOR MAJOR POWERS WILL BE LIMITED TO 1945. I'll place a timeline here in order to give you a brief overview of events, and before the IC starts, we'll have a concrete plan on what changes were made to ensure things work well. This is also a reboot of an earlier cold war rp, which was made by Derika. The timeline shows both real life events and alt history events.

1911: Xinhai Revolution and collapse of the Qing Dynasty in China
1914-1918: World War One
1917-1922: Russian Revolution and subsequent Civil War
1927-1937: Chinese Civil War before Japanese Invasion
1929-1939: Great Depression
1936-1939: Spanish Civil War
1942-1946: Manhattan Project
1939-1945: World War Two
1945: First use of nuclear weapons in war
1945: Japan surrenders to the Soviet Union, ending WW2. The People's Republic of Japan is established
1945: Soviets unite Bulgaria and Romania into a single country
1946: The British create the state of Norddeutschland in their zone of occupied Germany
1946: Communists and Nationalists in China agree to a unified government
1946-ongoing: First Indochina War
1947–1949: Palestine war
1948-1949: Berlin Blockade
1949: Soviets test their own nuclear weapon

Rules:
No godmodding
Stay realistic
Only two countries in the world had nukes at this time. You can go and develop atomic bombs, but it will take years of research and other countries will catch on.
No sudden troop movements or sudden victories

London, England, Early Morning

Winston Churchill has been through this morning routine for 9 years now, since becoming British Prime Minister in 1940. With the ending of the Second World War behind him, he ran for office a second time and won. While he had no idea how to rebuild the British economy, he managed to convince his opponent, Clement Attlee, to become Chancellor of the Exchequer. With this, the British government managed to recover in 4 years from one of the most devastating wars in history. The only problem is the very high national debt of the The British Empire.

Unfortunately, with the threat of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics growing, The British Empire and the United States of America formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as a deterrence to the Soviet Union in Europe. Meanwhile, the British Government, after a majority vote in Parliament, voted to create a Pro-British North German state in 1947, guarded by the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR)

Asia is a calmer front of the British Empire. Hong Kong is a sprawling city, while Australia and New Zealand have been granted even more freedom than most of the British Empire.

A officer comes into Churchill's office "Sir, the Ark Royal has completed its sea trials and is ready for deployment in the Far East." HMS Ark Royal, a Audacious class aircraft carrier, was rushed in construction during the late 40s, resulting in its completion in mid 1947. "The Far East requires a new commander- in-chief to cooperate with the Americans." The Prime Minister thinks for a moment, then comes up with his decision. "See if you can get Admiral Andrew Cunningham after retirement, and have Field Marshal William Slim take command of ANZAC and British forces in the Pacific. Have Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery take over as Chief of the General Staff, and have General John Harding take command of BAOR."

Estados Unidos do Brasil (The United States of Brazil)

Chapter 1: The New State

2:33pm, 2nd January 1949
Rio De Janerio, Brazil
Catete Palace

Brazil. A nation born with the fires of South America had been for the most time a dormant volcano, simply sleeping wait for its time to wake. In 1939 it had its chance to not only show the Americas but the whole world what it was capable of with the carnage of the second world war came shines of opportunities in the darkness of chaos. Brazil at first being neutral had been trading with both allies and axis making a large profit from the war however it would the attack on Pearl harbour that be the biggest change for Brazil for it had now completely allied itself to the power of Democracy. Brazil was not a military power like the United States or Britain but what it did have was resources, a lot of people to work and the safety of being out of reach of the axis attacks. As such Brazil with the assistance of the allies began a process of economic mobilisation with heavy industry being bought from America, industrial experts from countries that had been occupied like Czechoslovakia, France and certain refugees from Italy and Germany. By the end of the war Brazil had a strong economy and its industrialisation had been majorly ramped up from the beginning of the war. It now had the largest economy in South America and although was still now a powerhouse like America or the Soviet Union it still boasted a powerful economic power base.

"For too long Latin America has been subject to the powers of the USA and the old world. That must change or else we will continue to be simply servants to the whims of them." Vargas proclaimed as he paced around his office. Looking at his aid Odalis Félix Nunes and the Foreign Minister Salvador Flavio Guerra both had a notepad open "We must establish greater relations with the other countries of South America and propose better economics." Vargas paused for a second before returning "As well we must make sure that we unite and form a common goal of not allowing Communism to gain a foothold in Latin America for I have no doubt that the Soviets would be quick to establish a good base close the United States of America as well spreading communism in grounds that are ripe for it."

"So you are saying that we establish some sort of closer Union of South America" Salvador Flavio Guerra interrupted Vargas. Guerra was a young man in the game of politics at only 32 he still had his hair a beard to match both of which were a dark brown synonymous with his Portuguese and Spanish heritage. "I mean it could work provided that we offer the other countries at least and I am of course speaking from experience." The experience Guerra was speaking of was of course that of his Father a Venezuela who had moved to Brazil for work. He had been brought up as both a Brazilian and a Venezuelan and was taught in the ways of the most notable Venezuelan Simón Bolívar. He new the challenge of trying to get the other South American to cooperate with one another would be difficult land claims, instability and a wide selection of different political opinions would all be hazards if a closer bound between the Latin American countries was to be achieved. "It could work however I am going to need a lot of support from the Government President Vargas and some cash in order to grease the chains of Politics." Guerra finished.

"I know Salvador but I believe I have somethings that my help you. Firstly I have started to organise a gathering of some powerful people in the cities of New York and Dallas a sort of Brazilian expo in order to gather interest for investment into the Brazilian economy and possibly all of South America. You and ministry of finance will be working closely on that one. Secondly I am trying to start a diplomatic mission to the US I believe that you can persuade some members of the Government to at least think about the possibility of trying to stabilise Latin America." Vargas had finished pacing around the room as he stud behind his chair and placed both hands onto the top of it. "Then from there I believe you can work your magic being a Hispanic to try to woo the Hispanic countries. It is one of the many reasons I picked you to be my foreign minister."

The Immigration act of 1949

As of today the Immigration act of 1949 would allow immigrants of all countries to enter the United States of Brazil through any official Brazilian registry port provided that they meet the following requirements to be allowed to enter and stay in the United States of Brazil:

-Has not been convicted for a crime that is regarded as criminal offence in the United States of Brazil criminal law code
-A least one family member is able to work upon entrance to the United States of Brazil for a period of at least 10 years
-A family is allowed no more then at least 5 dependent to enter the country as a set family
-Has not been found to be apart of an organisation that has been found to be linked to war crimes during the Second World War

The act is steered towards getting immigrants from countries that were and still under the effects of the aftermath of the second world war. It should be noted that Visa to enter the country will be unchanged and a special visa will be developed next year for the onset of the Fifa world cup.

In Summary
-Brazil is going to purse closer bounds with other Latin American countires
-A diplomatic mission to the USA on behalf of the United States of Brazil will be sent in the coming months
-Brazil has changed its immigration policy to allow a greater number of immigrants to enter the country in the aftermath of the WW2.

Zhang Lan nodded along with the meeting his mind on other things "With economic indicators exceeding our expectations we can introduce an American style Social Security system this session, it should go a long way to curb communist influence..." the voice droned on, he was not telling him anything he didn't know. If Mao was going to be defeated in the long term they would need to institute welfare reforms,

"Invite experts from the United States and experts from the Soviet Union to advise us on the construction of the welfare system" Zhang Lan finally said cutting them off "whether they help us or not we should pay lip service to both". The Cabinet Minister left the room satisfied but Lan head bowed in dark contemplation, the only ministers left in the room were former nationalists and members of the military.

"You know what we must do" one said after the silence went on several minutes "We can afford to start the program now... you can't put this off" Lan looked out the window at the peaceful scene outside it wondering how the actions took in this room, in this hour would forever change the tranquility of the world.

"The equation has changed... the Soviets have the bomb... I do not expect to match the arsenal of the United States or the Soviets but even a few bombs could make the difference... We will begin construction of uranium enrichment plants and plutonium facilities. China must have nuclear weapons"

A secret meeting of socialist leaders had been called. Francisco Largo Caballero, Juan Hernández Saravia and Manuel Azaña were discussing the invasion of Morrocco. Saravia was in millitary uniform, and had an eunterrague of generals following him. They sat down on a table, surrounded by armed guards. Caballero and Azaña looked at Saravia seriously, as if if he messed up, there would be serious consequences.

The enteurrage of generals drew out a map, which showed the planned offensive into Morrocco. Caballero looked at it curiously, and smiled. Saravia suddenly said "Your Excellency, we will imitate the German Blitzkrieg strategy for this attack. The invasion will begin on September 10th, when Ceuta and Tetuán will be bombarded from the air over the course of 48 hours." Saravia stood up and began pointing at the relevant locations on the map. "On September 11th, our forces will bombard all the significant locations under rebellious control on the coast and will conduct a limited amount of attacks on military facilities inland. By September 13th, we wish to begin troop landings, securing control of Ceuta and we bellieve an offensive on Tetuán would be in order by the 15th. Once Tetuán is under control, we will begin a massive bombardment of the rest of the territory until its resources are almost neutralised. Then, our troops will move in and execute any rebels."

Caballero looked at Saravia curiously, and Saravia was almost taken aback. Then, Caballero had a quite sudden change of mood and said "excellent." The plan was to go ahead, Viva España!

African Provisional Government-controlled Africa (Johannesburg)
January 1950

De Klair sat in his office, attending to several administrative matters. His speechwriters and radio crew alerted him to begin getting ready for his speech, with a microphone placed on his desk, ready to begin speaking to his troops and to his supporters, along with a few - mostly Eastern Bloc, but also a few left-wing Western Bloc - journalists. He was known for being a strong speaker, with a voice that could fill rooms, and his speeches - and the way they were represented- only did more to affirm this reputation. The original speech was in English but a French and Afrikaans version was also given by De Klair.

"Today, comrades, we are at war, as we have been for the last 5 years. But every year, we must remind ourselves what this war is for, lest we lose our course and our aim in these times. Make no mistake - this is a war against the Western world, against their tyranny and enslavement of our peoples. In America - the so-called land of opportunity and freedom - those of African descent are still forced to sit in the back of buses, still spat upon by the white race, and are constantly arrested for offences they did not commit. They are seen as murderers and thugs, when nothing could be further from the truth. The white men in America and in Britain talk about the 'subhuman' black race, and about how we ought to be rounded up and put in our place like cattle, and then turn around and claim they support liberty and justice for all people. The whites took our land, our votes and our right to exist. And now, they come into our homeland and sack our cities, seize our rights and hold us in prison for defying their tyranny.

They call this their crusade of civilisation - the white man's burden, as they say - but it is nothing less than naked political greed. Men of faith and of righteousness? BAH! They use Christ as their sword, wielding their guns in the name of God. Lucifer has blinded them towards greed and envy, and yet they cannot see it. It was white men that had Jesus murdered, and no doubt they'd do it again. The white man has come to this continent not with gifts and kindness, but with guns and lashes, crushing us under their heel.

At the end of the Second World War, the West had just fought itself, crippled and dying as it fought a war against a beast it released. Every year I have said that we are closer and closer to liberty, once the West finally comes to its senses and realise we would much rather die than live for another century - for another millennium - of slavery. Upon our victory, I promise you not a second life of slavery or suffering and famine as the West say I shall, but rather education, roads, clean water, food, medicine and true liberation. Not a single man shall starve by the end of the century, and not a single disease shall exist at the end of the next. We will build heaven on Earth, no matter how long it takes us. We will win this war, even by the skin of our teeth. We will not stop until every single one of us is bleeding out from their lungs gasping for air. There shall be no surrender. When give the choice between death and dishonour, I shall pick death! Workers of the world, unite! Today shall be the day of triumph!"

Sofia, Balkan Socialist State of Bulgaria

Valko Chervenkov had begun his day like many other days, working out then having a working breakfast while receiving his daily briefing. He continued his breakfast until a not so day to day issue came up, which was the creation of the inter Romania-Bulgaria Railway. He told the woman giving him the days briefing to make a note of it, and for him to schedule a meeting with the State leader of transportation. She did so beckoning to an even lower employee of Largo. She continued on with the briefing finishing up 15 minutes later. Chervenkov dismissed her and searched for the person making the appointment. He found the man, and told him to call Georgi Chankov, the man did so. Chankov answered the phone

"Hello Mr. Chairman how may I help you."

"I recieved a proposal regarding the Inter Romania-Bulgaria Railway, and want you to begin talks with Alexa Augustin to unify all the major cities in the Union via a high speed railway."

"Right away, Mr. Chairman. This proposal should help our economy grow as it would ensure that our goods and services are sent quicker."

"On a side note, I want you and Augustin to inspect the intercity mass transport systems and upgrade them if need be. If the UK can have a metro system, we can too."

"Yessir, I will also consider ferry systems in the major cities with larger rivers bisecting them and creating one to bridge Varna and Constanța."

"Good, I know I can trust you with this."

Chervenkov hangs up and resumes his morning routine. Since it's a friday, he has decided to sit in on the assembly session going on. During his commute, he passed by the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and thought to himself, maybe I should let up on the anti-religious policy put in by my predecessor and his Romanian equivalent.

Moscow, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Stalin sat down in a room in the Kremlin, surrounded by his best generals and scientists. The last week had been monumental for the progress of the Soviet Union. On August 29, 1949, the Soviets successfully tested their first atomic bomb. This was the result of years of espionage and research. The test at Semipalatinsk, Kazakh SSR ended American dominance in the nuclear field, and with the USSR's humiliation in Berlin just a few months ago, this had the potential to tip the balance of power more equally between the two powers. Of course, this would remain a secret. The Americans dropped two of these bombs on Japan right before the Invasion of Manchuria, which was done not only to end the war, but to showcase the power the US had. Since then, Stalin made sure that the research and production efforts were increased.

As the reports of the test was being read, Stalin pondered on what the future would hold. The world had come dangerously close to a third world war just a few years after the second ended. It was clear that the alliance against the Germans was temporary, and now that Stalin tested the West in Berlin, any sense of reconciliation fell apart. The USSR collecting their own nuclear weapons would scare the West into a policy of mutually assured destruction, which would keep peace for now. The Eastern Bloc, established post World War Two by the Moscow Conference, gave the Soviets most of Eastern Europe as buffer states. Lavrentiy Beria, member of the Politburo and one of the Union's most important men, was instrumental in the successes the country. However, he had some...undesirable trait s that did make him untrustworthy, even to the genocidal Stalin. Stalin wanted to remove him as Beria's existence wouldn't be as vital now, but he had some more issues to attend to.

Keeping the test a secret would be challenge, but the most important condition had already been fulfilled. With the reports of the test now read and analyzed, Stalin now knew he could keep up with the West, and with the large amounts of Soviet troops in Europe, there would be no war anytime soon.

Earlier in the year, the Soviets set up the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (also known as Comecon) to counter the American Marshall Plan, and to maintain control over the Eastern Bloc. This had mixed results, but Stalin cared more about keeping Western influence out than anything else. And speaking of western influence, the Indochina War between the French and Vietnamese was ongoing. Stalin decided to keep an eye on the war, but an intervention wouldn't be easy. China, even with a sizable communist minority in their government, was leaning towards NATO and most likely, wouldn't appreciate any moves that would destabilize the region further. So while a direct military intervention wouldn't be ideal, aid sent to the Viet Minh would help. This could also be a talking point against the West, as they spoke about "freedom" while also maintaining colonies worldwide.

London, England, 10 Downing Street, September 3, 1949

The Prime Minister is reading his daily reports on troop movements throughout the Empire. Admiral Cunningham, who came out of retirement in February, has taken command of the Ark Royal battlegroup in Hong Kong, while Field Marshal Slim has taken command of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) and the British 3rd Army, for a total of 70,000 troops of the 800,000 British Army.

Meanwhile, the British Army of the Rhine has been on training exercises throughout the year, preparing for a probable Soviet Invasion of Europe. As this is happening, the British Nuclear project, codenamed Tube Alloys, has been underway since 1942, so a estimate for the first nuclear weapon tested by the British Empire is 1952.

As Churchill is thinking, he realizes that a South American ally to NATO is needed, to stop the spread of communism in South America. He calls in his secretary, and tells her to phone the Brazilian Government asking for a defensive alliance, offering in exchange a license for the Centurion Mk. 3 and a license for the Rolls-Royce Derwent turbojet engine.

Great variation in military equipment was present some of the equipment from both the communist and nationalist chinese forces during the civil war, the Imperial Japanese Army, or purchased on the open market mainly from Czechoslovakia and the United States army surplus following WW2. Additionally unlicensed versions of the Thompson submachine gun, PPSh-41 and German arms like the Karabiner 98k were present in large quantities though an effort is being made to standardize.

Beginning in 1948 the National Defense Council was established as well as 2 military regions among 5 military theaters. Formal military training was intensified and a professional officer corps was created, a mashup of American and Soviet styles of command, emphasizing combined arms armor and artillery heavy mobile forces.

Most tanks were left over from the Civil War, a combination of Soviet T series tanks and light tanks like the M5 Stuart as well as the Type 97 Chi-Ha tanks captured from the Japanese.

Aircraft were in a similar situation, most left over from WW2 and the civil war, USA, Soviet and Japanese aircraft making up the bulk of the force

London, England

The Prime Minister is looking at reports when the Minister of Foreign Affairs walks in to the room "Sir, we just received a French envoy who states that his government, now under French President Hugo Durand, has asked to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization." "Send him back, saying that the United Kingdom says that they can join NATO if they desire." The Prime Minister responds.

Madrid, Spain
8th September 1949
Image

The election results from France had been devastating. The socialist regime had lost one of its closest allies and was slowly getting boxed in by NATO. Spain needed to show its power and its strength, and drastic measures were in order. The invasion of Morrocco could wait, for that was a minor concern now.

Caballero had prepared a bill and a speech in order to respond to the tensions. He passed the bill via executive order, and later stood on a podium in Palacio de Vistalegre, delivering a rousing speech.

"My companion Spaniards, yesterday there was a great blow to the Socialist dream around the world. On September 6th, France held an election, and allowed capitalist scumbag to participate." The audience boos. "Then, yesterday, their new capitalist government, headed by Americophile pigs, applied to join HATE-O!" The audience boos again, shouting "down with hate-o!" repeatedly. "This grave threat to Socialism cannot be ignored, this behaviour is unacceptable. Spain must respond and, my friends, it has!" The audience cheers. "Today I passed an executive order with immediate effect. To target HATE-O, Spanish land, air and naval forces will not allow the passage of goods or people between Gibraltar and its surroundings. We will also blockade the Strait of Gibraltar and seize any vessels which seek to supply HATE-O or its allies. We will also not allow people or goods to pass through our borders with HATE-O or its allies, and we will expel all ambassadors from HATE-O states. Finally, we will ban all capitalist organisations and membership of one will hereon after be defined as treason, which is punishable by death. This bill is a radical move needed for these turbulent times. Good night to the good people of Madrid!" The audience cheers as Callabero moves off stage.

Tokyo, People' Republic of Japan

Japan was looking much better, every day seemed to bring a better sense of calm and comfort to the people - at the current moment, Rin Sora, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Japan, Lady Ice-Wind to the Imperial Loyalists, was washing her face in a bathroom - having taken a moment away from the numerous Party Meetings that now dominated the sphere of Japan. A woman of low birth, whom had started out as the mere daughter of a farmer, when she had been a young girl she had once idolized the Samurai and their Code. It had been around the time, when she heard tales from her grandfather - granted he had been senile, yet still interesting to hear. Then the Empire of Japan was formed, initially she had been a loyalist like many people, believing the words spoken by their Emperor. Up until, her father had been killed by their soldiers - for spreading propaganda they said, disrupting the peace they said, being a coward and traitor they said.

It had been after that incident - that she lost any sense of loyalty to an Emperor whose subjects were mere tools, to an Empire who saw itself as the dominant force and not the people below it. She had been taken in by the Communists - who espoused the ideals of brotherhood, equality and hard-work. It was there she had been educated truly on the truth of their Empire. They were imperialistic, greedy, liars and traitors all of them. Many of their sons and brothers and fathers dead for a false ideal. Anybody that demanded obedience for the sake of it, didn't deserve it. Respect had to be earned, not taken or demanded. Those in power hadn't liked that, they had hunted them, killed them and made an example of them. Many of them had fled and hid away - waiting for the moment when their oppressors would be weak enough to strike.

The Gods had answered in the most opportune way possible - as the very power of their might had been unleashed twice. One to burn away the idea that the Empire or Emperor were invincible, the second to wash away their shame from these lands. Rin had been among many who had charged the Imperial Palace - needless to say, the opulence and richness displayed had made her sick. Their people starved, trained and served loyally - while their leaders dined like Gods and Kings; expecting them to defend against an enemy they had agitated. Granted when they surrendered, many among them hadn't favored the Americans - as they had remembered enough of their history to know what may happen once more if they submitted to the West. Not to mention, in their hour of need, it had been the Soviet Union that had given them aid - when they needed it most. Even after the war, they had continued aiding them.

In a way, the reforms of the past - started by the Emperor helped them out now massively. The people were eager to have peace once more, to have a job and to have meaning in their life. Their need for conquest and resources had been much aided by the Soviet Union - proving that cooperation worked better than imperialism. Still, war never changed - and many agreed, they were slowly brewing into another one. The Americans were now 'helping' those they once called out as murderers and were arming and helping them to rebuild even. The MGB had warned them up ahead, of the 'deals' in China and elsewhere - it seemed that war once more might come again to their shores...

Rin Sora quickly dismissed her thoughts and used a nearby towel to dry her face and a comb to help set into place her short hair.

Estados Unidos do Brasil
Chapter 2: The Shining Beacon of South America

7th September 1949
Natal, Rio Grande De Norte
Natal Naval base

A humid spell had fall upon the city of Natal. As the winter months ended and spring began to arrive the mixture of the damp still mixed in the weather and the arriving of the hotter summer made the conditions troublesome for other people but not Admiral Alcides Villanueva a man who had a joke that he has been in Natal longer then the native Brazilians and as such was used to the weather in the area. The Admiral was to host some government officials including both the Vice President and Minister of War who wished to know the progress of the Aircraft carrier Aquila and an overview of the Brazilian Navy. Admiral Villanueva had organised a lunch in the outside quarters of his residence overlooking some drilling of new Naval officers. He himself was looking at the drill before he was interrupted by his secretary who had alongside him both the Vice President and Minister for war. "Arrrr Gentlemen I see you have arrived safe and sound from Rio De Janerio, please sit down." Villanueva requested as his hand reached out from behind his back cutting through the air showing the gentlemen where to sit. "It seems that you have remained safe up here in Natal." Vice President Café Filho remarked as he took his place, placing the napkin that was on the table and laying it over his legs before he tucked his chair in close. "Well there is no reason to beat behind the bush I assume you know why we are?" Filho again remarked

"I do Mr Vice President." Villanueva then sat down so he was at eye level with the other two gentlemen. "The Aquila is doing well. Two Heavy cruisers have escorted her into Alexandria where she is being repaired on by British ship builders to our specification of course and have daily updates about her situation. She is believed to be able to make the journey to here by mid-October where she will be finished and put to sea trails." Villanueva finished clasping his hands together as the Filho and Óscar Mendes the Minister of War nodded at each. "So I believe that with the fact that the Aquila is being repaired in Alexandria that the government has come to terms with the British." Filho sat back in his chair a small smirk came across his face.

"Indeed we have. Not only are we formalising an alliance which will officially be announced by the end of the day but has given us a few goodies, namely the Centurion tank and access to the British Jet Engine which will hopeful be the start of our Jet program something which I believe you have been very keen on?" Filho asked as he put his arm around the corner of his chair. Villanueva was quick to respond he had been a driving force behind a Brazilian Jet program seeing the potential it had for Aircraft carriers and that a jet can be smaller and need less runway to take off meant that the Aquila could be fitted with better aircraft for the Brazilian navy. "Yes I am. A jet is a tool for the future and with Aircraft carriers being the new capital ships we need ours to be as effective as possible and I believe Jet will be the tool to make them effective."

"Well the official agreement will go up tonight and we should have access to some jet by the end of the month." As the meeting dragged on the three men talked about the state of the navy and the need to modernise it as well as the official plan to get the Aquila to the Natal naval dock yard. However the hours passed and the meeting was soon over as the men dispersed they did not know what was going to happen over the pound that would put a pin in their plans.

Several Hours Later
8th September 1949
Rio De Janerio, Brazil
Brazilian Emergency Cabinet

It was the early hours of the morning when the news had struck the Brazilian military command before being sent to the official members of Government. The Socialist Republic of Spain had declared NATO effectively an enemy of the Republic stopping anything that is somewhat related to NATO from entering anywhere near its borders. This had come just hours after Brazil had officially announced a Pact with the United Kingdom key player in NATO. This no posed an issue for Brazil and NATO itself without access through Gibraltar ships would have to sail around the horn of Africa and up the Suez in order to enter the Mediterranean. But for Brazil immediately was the Aquila the ship that had been bought off the Italians was deemed to dangerous to go round Africa so a direct route of Atlantic would make the journey a lot safer. Vargas after looking through a number of papers had decided to act. "I think for now we shall act cautiously and try to apply pressure to Spain. Firstly I want the heavy cruiser Bahia to be detached from her duties in Alexandria and be taking to Malta where upon it will prepare itself for potential combat with the Spanish. I will also release a full statement tomorrow condemning the actions as well as telling the Spanish to retract them. Finally I will speak to my counter part in Portugal and ask if he needs anymore men to protect his country from potential Spanish invasion. Gentlemen for now we wait and see what the rest of the world will do but this could our moment to shine to put Brazil on the world stage. Let us show how we Brazilians like to do."

In summary
-Aquila a Italy aircraft carrier that was never finished has been bought by the Brazilian navy and is currently docked in Alexandria doing repairs after attack in the second world war
-Brazil has officially announced a defensive pact with Britain with Britain supplying Brazil with the Centurion Tank and access to Jet Engines
-Brazil will set to deploy troops into Portugal should the Portuguese accept the offer to halt Spanish invasion should it come to that. It has also moved a heavy cruiser into Malta to begin war drills

London, England, September 9, 1949, 9 AM

A officer rushes into Churchill office "Sir, Gibraltar has been blockaded by the Spanish. Your orders?" "You know what to do."

HMS Implacable, Implacable class aircraft carrier, 11:30 AM

Admiral of the Fleet Sir Rhoderick Robert McGrigor was watching over Scapa Flow Naval Base and his mighty force of ships. The Home Fleet was the biggest fleet in the Royal Navy, with 4 aircraft carriers, 4 battleships, and multiple cruisers and destroyers. His subordinate, Vice Admiral Sir Edward Syfret, arrives with orders from the Admiralty stating:

Move the Home Fleet in the entirety to Gibraltar and break the blockade imposed by the Spanish forces. Refusal of the Spanish to back down is to be considered a act of war. Respond accordingly to the situation as it unfolds.

He sets out from Scapa Flow 2 hours later, with Vanguard and King George V leading the fleet, with escorts all around. In the air, Westland Wyverns are covering the skies from enemy aircraft.

Hugo Durand is sitting in his office. He has passed WElfare laws, and has joined NATO. things look good, until an officer rushes into his office
"Sir! Spain is blockading Gibraltar! And they ahve declared us their enemies!"
"Those Traitors! And after all we did to help them, too. Send a task fleet to gibraltar with the british. Reply that we are ready to stand side by side with them, and that in a war, the Republicans would easily be invaded through france, not to mention france's own military capabilities, which withstanded the Nazi war machine for 3 years before breaking down."
Yes Sir!

thanks, but I've always been a democracy. Just a limited one, with only left-leaning parties. Yet the SD plans to allow Centre and Centre-right wing political parties. (hopefully that means the 8th congress won;t be as ridiculous as the 7th)(I mean, the SD got 9 provinces in a row!)

Vyacheslav Molotov, the Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union and First Deputy Premier shook his head in frustration. The west clearly was willing to go to war against Spain on Gibraltar, and the presence of Soviet troops in Europe didn't seem to deter them at all. Stalin had explicitly informed him that news of the atomic bomb test last week was to remain a secret, which is why he didn't allude to it in the Communist Party's official statement on the issue. Either way, the Soviet Union had the advantage here. The Red Army is still the largest in the world, and the West knew of how well the army did against the Blitzkrieg that dominated Europe in the early phases of the war. Vasily Sokolovsky, the Marshall of the USSR who had overseen the capture of Berlin, stood beside the Foreign Minister.

What the hell do we do, Molotov?" Sokolovsky asked angrily. "We're not officially allied with the Spanish, but they are still socialists, and if the British believe they can step over them, what prevents them from doing something to the Eastern Bloc? Yugoslavia? Japan? We'll have to take a stand here!"

"Calm down, Marshall," Molotov replied. "Our Army defeated the Nazis pretty much by ourselves, and we took down the Japanese in Manchuria. The British know what a war with one of the world's most powerful nations would do to them. Besides, they follow America like dogs, anyway."

"I guess that's true, Foreign Minister. Our main priority will be to send the Spanish military aid an invite them to our faction. And while we're on the topics of factions, I heard the General Secretary got a phone call by a member of Africa's socialist fighters."

"The General Secretary will deal with that. In fact, I'm sure he already issued a response."

Pravda, Official newspaper of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics strongly advises against any act of war against the Socialist Republic of Spain. Spain, being a socialist country, is considered an ally of the USSR, and any action taken against them will result in retaliation. The Red Army numbers over a million in our occupied zones in Eastern Europe. We hope peace can be retained through these dangerous times, but we will not allow our fellow communists to fall to western imperialism. We ask that leaders of both the Socialist Republic of Spain, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, agree to meet in the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Assembly is planning to convene later this month.

Stalin's secretary picked up the phone in response to De Klair's call. Immediately afterwards, it was forwarded to Stalin himself. "Greetings! May I ask what it is you want to discuss today?

Vyacheslav Molotov decided to call Washington D.C to discuss the Spanish and British directly with the President of the United States. America had stayed out of the conflict for now, but it's best to appear diplomatic for now. The UN General Assembly won't occur until a few weeks from now, but they didn't have that kind of time. The Berlin Blockade emboldened the West, and another failure in Spain could be disastrous

Bucharest Socialist Balkan State of Romania

Constantin Parhon sends a telegramme to Stalin:

"Great Chairman Stalin,
I am writing to you in response to the Spanish Blockade of Gibraltar, a colony of the British on the southern coast of Iberia. Is there anything we, being the USBR, can do to assist in a peaceful solution to the incident? It appears Spain has said enough is enough and is pushing to reclaim what was once theirs. Spain is looking to reverse the effects of the proper Treaty of Utrecht. I also write wishing for more information about this Comecon.
Thank you,
Chairman of the USBR Constantin Parhon"

Parhon after sending the message began to work on creating a more tourist friendly Constanta by incentivising people to move to the city from the rural areas and work in the key tourist industries.

Hugo Durand is frustrated. A round of peace talks with the Viet Minh had failed. Yet finally, the new Tanks and troops had arrived. The flamethrowes on the tanks helped a lot, and the Viet Minh were slowly being pushed back.
He heard of the Soviet Warning. He ordered his generals to set france into a High Alert Defensive position, but to keep it secret. 200,000 french reserves were sent to multiple forts across the nation, with the government describing it as a "Military Exercise"

His government said in a public announcement that "We helped spain,a dn this is how they thank us? We are ready to defend the UK and our other NATO allies"
