Internet as basic human right

Postby Iwassoclose » Fri Sep 20, 2019 11:17 am

if you agree with the title, do you also think the government should provide you a smart phone and a laptop at the least so you can connect to the internet.

for - you create an equal opportunity to underprivileged kids and teens who might face bullying, have anxiety over not having access to internet to get their homework done, creating a gap in knowledge which will block them from even thinking about entering a highly lucrative field of jobs in IT

against - government spending shouldnt be given out for what people might consider luxury goods, internet causes anxiety and addiction, priority over other more pressing issues

Are you kidding, absolutely not. People can live healthy and happy if not happier lives without the internet. This is why I banned the internet in my nation.

How about some more meat on this bone? Your opinion? Why should or should not the government provide those things free of charge? You know the drill.

I disagree, the more widespread the internet has gotten the more crappy teammates I get in videogames who dont even speak English. And my team just gets younger and younger as kids these days are browsing before they can walk. If anything the internet should require some sort of test before you can use it, and have a age limit.

Internet should be considered a public utility and broadband should be offered as a public option at minimum (like Elizabeth Warren's proposal). Internet access and speeds should also be increased in rural areas. This would help rural areas greatly and reduce their decline.

I see your point but the world has much greater problems right now and I'm not talking politics, or climate change I'm talking about poverty, abuse, war, disease, cancer, etc.

I’d like a beefier op, but here’s the list of it- The UN cited it as a basic human right, in 2011.

(source - https://www2.ohchr.org/english/bodies/h ... .27_en.pdf )

So, yes, it is a basic human right. But no, the government should not provide every person a laptop or phone- Instead, have internet hubs people can use, free of charge, which will have computers.

increasing access to fast speed internet would help reduce poverty. Also this can be done in tandem with other things. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/elizabet ... 91ed0829de
It would only cost 85 billion in federal subsidies to do what Warren plans.

If the UN said that murdering people was a human right, does that make it so? Like anyone cares what the UN has to say, its a bogus institute and will probably go down in history as the dumbest idea we ever had. No intranational government of body is above our god given nation states. Only the nation state holds legitimacy, globalists dont like this but its true.

It won't do someone any good if they can't afford the electricity to run their smartphone or whatever. The internet can be put to good uses, but it can also be used as a time waster that doesn't help someone improve any.

How about a library instead? Homeless types can improve their prospects there, instead of having a smartphone that'll make them a target for robbery or will enable them to waste their day watching anime, porn, reading fanfiction, or whatever. It's also a burden in that they constantly need to find ways to "recharge" that phone for free.

It's sounds like an ambitious plan and I could definitely see it helping the US but not the whole world. Also if the internet was considered a human right imagine how much rare metals would be needed to make all those phones and laptops?

Libraries, you say? A good idea, as long as you pledge to never cut their funding.

I think rather internet access is a human right, and rather such access ought to be provided via government programs are two distinct issues.

Having said that, I would say yes to both.

I'm not saying that everyone follows one viewpoint would be extremely naive. No what I am saying is my cheerfulness stat actually went up when I banned the internet. Besides there are those out there you would suffer from withdrawal if they lost access to the internet. As for the irony in my former message almost everyone makes a hypocritical comment at one point or another just look at the world today.

I'd say yes, but then again I feel like a lot of things should be basic human rights that just... either flat out aren't or aren't enforced.
Food, Shelter, a small amount of privacy (like you'd get in a solitary cell or something), Water, Sanitary stuffs, and basic Information (which, at this point, would have the internet as the contender for it). Freedom of speech, or freedom in general, would be nice as well.

Alas, none of those are basic human rights (not in my nation here on NA period) or at least not enforced (such as in the RL nation I live in), but hey, I'd still love for them to be basic human rights.

I know people who could fix the code so your happiness stat goes down through the floor if you take away the internet. Your experiences in the game are not relevant.
