In 2003, a short-lived "California Credit" service opened up, being wiped out at the .com crash. In fact, the .com crash was particularly devestating for California Online Conglomerates (as it was now called), with California Technologies on the brink of collapse with its stock price collapsing from $55 to $10 in one day. California Industries, and California Business held their own however, retaining about 80% of their original holdings.In that day, Theodore lost a whopping $10 billion in assets, with the burgeoning California Technologies spiralling towards collapse, and which also marked bad news for California Industries and California Business, as the COC mostly relied on California Technologies. However, as recoveries were made, California Technologies (which relied on the general internet traffic, along with residential use) began to recover, albeit not by too much, only having recovered to $36 in 2010 and $75 today. The California Online Conglomerates, after braving the crash, decided to continue aggressive expansion, buying several search engines (California Search), set up an email service (CMail) and even the (short-lived) return of California Credit, which only burgeoned Theodore's wealth further.

Thanks to Republican influence, he was able to testify, and gave one of the most 'earth-shaking, heart-ripping, spine-chilling' speeches ever given. His testimony was rather short, yet powerful.

He was there at Osowiec Fortress, one of the dead men who had charged at the Germans, coughing up his own blood and lungs as he charged at the enemy. The gas was so toxic that he barely survived, almost dying. That was the extent of his bravery. He barely lived, the gas cleared just in time. And yet when the Bolsheviks came, he did not weep for all his suffering. He did not join those traitors who wished to sign peace with those who had killed 5 million of my countrymen.

That is what really put Vohoffsky on the map. The Republicans saw him as a hero who fought against socialism, the Democrats saw him as a dangerous iconoclast who lusted over wealth. The Republican primaries were basically moot, as he rocketed through with over 80% of the vote, allowing him to build up a massive warchest from his own wealth and his contacts, promising a bill for large subsidies to tech companies (suspicious yet?) and tax cuts to 'developing industries' (if you're not seeing him as corrupt now, there's something wrong with you), which made him popular, roundly defeating the incumbent 55-45. He used this influence to bring his promises to fruition, keeping the Silicon Valley Techs, upper-class, young people and the tech community on his side. He continued fighting for tech companies, once attracting the ire of the Republican mainstream by rebelling against the whip on SOPA and PIPA, commenting that:

"As one of the founders of the modern internet, let me tell you that 80-year-old men in suits don't have any business telling the internet how to work."

He has always fought for the tech community, but he has also taken libertarian stances on abortion, gay marriage and even war. Any Republican whip will have trouble with Vohoffsky, particularly if he gains an ally or two...

In fact, according to the national census, Reading had the highest share of American citizens living in poverty in the entire country. Winthrop still expresses how lucky she felt to have access to good teachers like her mother, who she credits for getting her ahead in life, more so than her school. Her father had a heart condition, and Winthrop often recounts how the family sometimes used to struggle to pay for his medicine.

Winthrop was taught advanced learning material at home by her mother, and thus she was an excellent student. She graduated at the top of her class and she got into Boston University. However, due to her parent's economic condition, she took out quite a large student loan. Winthrop majored at BU in Economics. She wasn't a politically active student; she didn't even register with a political party. But, while at college, Winthrop started to understand certain issues facing Americans. She came to realize while doing various research projects in class how broken the US economic system was. After being shocked by the extent of income inequality in America, Winthrop applied to Harvard Law School hoping to become a labor lawyer, and got in. After completing law school and joining the bar, Winthrop decided to specialize in labor law; she wanted to help workers and unions prosecute cases against corporations who were abusing their power. She caught the eye of a progressive Congressman, who brought her to Capitol Hill to partake in a questioning of the CEO of a major retail corporation. Winthrop's tough and specific questioning went viral, which gained her some recognition.

She soon realized that she was really struggling to pay off her student loans, since labor lawyers are not paid much. She decided to quit law and become an economist instead, which turned out to be a terrible decision in terms of salary but a great decision for her personal knowledge. She was employed as an adjunct economics professor at Amherst College. She was given a grant at Amherst to do research on two topics: student loans and housing. Winthrop did pathbreaking work on both. Her detailed paper on tuition deferral programs in colleges to solve the student loan crisis became a popular idea amongst leftists and liberals alike, and her really detailed idea for a Universal Housing Voucher gained steam. It's not that Winthrop was anti-establishment as such, she was just not experienced. But the people of Massachusetts took a liking to her, and she did win after a bruising primary where she had to show her true progressive colors. However, due to the limited support she received from the state Democratic Party, she turned down the nomination and ran as an independent. She went on to handily win the Massachusetts general election, thus being elected as the Junior Senator for Massachusetts.

Winthrop's time in the Senate has been complicated. While her caucus appreciates her wonkish nature, she has been heavily disliked for her (restrained but consistent) criticism of the two party system. I very much like this character and have to congratulate you on a fantastic first application. A couple of things.

1. You will need to go into more detail on how exactly Winthrop managed to eek out a plurality as an Independent in a hyperpartisan time like 2018 when many Mass voters may have viewed her as a ticket splitter and potential spoiler for a Republican, therefore avoiding her candidacy. Is the implication that Democrats declined to field a candidate knowing she would caucus with them? If she is bad at networking, how did she manage to fund her campaign operation to the point that it guided her to what you describe as a solid win.

2. Open atheism is a bit of a poison pill in American politics, writing extensively on the matter in an anti-christian fashion would likely draw increased Republican turnout, and anti-Muslim writings would likely draw some democratic opposition as well, which further compounds the issue of a 3 way race. If it can be adequately explained and defended, I will allow it as a concept, as it is not wholly outside of the realm of possibility.

3. According to the date of her election, she would have been sworn in on the day that this RP starts, which means she would not have had any time in the senate to speak of so far.

He was re-elected a third time in 2014, by an increased majority. Biography: Born to rich white emigres who owned large amounts of stock in real estate, Theodor attended Harvard-Westlake school, and - despite being keen with business - decided to take programming, soon taking it up as his fashion as he found computers and systems interesting, instead as his elder brother was set to receive management of the company instead of him. He soon took his doctoral degree in computer science from MIT, and began to set off, using about $20 million in capital from his family, to establish California Technologies, which focused on establishing internet infrastructure as Vohoffsky was credited with the title of "Civilian Inventor" of the Internet, working with entrepreneurs and techies across the world to push for mass civilian internet use, doing PR and expanding the idea of the World Wide Web across the world outside of scientific circles in what was known as the WWW Tour, helping to popularise the internet to the civilian popular, all funded by California Technologies, which mostly did website hosting and web infrastructure at the time. Of course, CT was still in the red thanks to the large expenses of the WWW Tour and the lack of inflow.

However, Theodore used a $50 million loan from his brother to keep CT in business, along with expanding operations to ISP and router networks. Coinciding with the beginning of the .com bubble, the extra flow of websites and traffic to the internet gave CT a new lease on life, making hundreds of millions in profits every year, ever expanding. Soon enough, California Industries and California Business opened up, with one opening up gaming to the casual gamer, and the other helping businesses transition from the old world to the new, at one point becoming the largest supplier of beenz, as it offered businesses large amounts of beenz (somewhere between the thousands and the millions) to sign up, depending on how big and stable they were. In 2003, a short-lived "California Credit" service opened up, being wiped out at the .com crash. In fact, the .com crash was particularly devestating for California Online Conglomerates (as it was now called), with California Technologies on the brink of collapse with its stock price collapsing from $55 to $10 in one day. California Industries, and California Business held their own however, retaining about 80% of their original holdings.In that day, Theodore lost a whopping $10 billion in assets, with the burgeoning California Technologies spiralling towards collapse, and which also marked bad news for California Industries and California Business, as the COC mostly relied on California Technologies. However, as recoveries were made, California Technologies (which relied on the general internet traffic, along with residential use) began to recover, albeit not by too much, only having recovered to $36 in 2010 and $75 today. The California Online Conglomerates, after braving the crash, decided to continue aggressive expansion, buying several search engines (California Search), set up an email service (CMail) and even the (short-lived) return of California Credit, which only burgeoned Theodore's wealth further.

This rapid expansion came to a screeching halt in 2008, with California Credit and California Business(as it was a bank-caused recession, after all) causing a contraction in California Online Conglomerates' other holdings. Theodore, in order to promote his self-image (as California Online Conglomerates was probably more well-known than Vohoffsky Real Estate), changed the names as follows:

Whilst always holding libertarian political views, Vohoffsky decided to make his first folly into politics with an anti-monopoly bill being introduced by [not-Dianne Feinstein] at the eve of the 2012 election as an attempt to increase liberal turnout, which would rip apart Vohoffsky E-Holdings and effectively destroy his fortune. Thanks to Republican influence, he was able to testify, and gave one of the most 'earth-shaking, heart-ripping, spine-chilling' speeches ever given. His testimony was rather short, yet powerful.

"Mr. Speaker, let me tell you about my great-grandfather's brother, Boris Vohoffsky. Like many, he lived under the gun, fighting in the First World War honourably against the German invaders. That is what really put Vohoffsky on the map. The Republicans saw him as a hero who fought against socialism, the Democrats saw him as a dangerous iconoclast who lusted over wealth. The Republican primaries were basically moot, as he rocketed through with over 80% of the vote, allowing him to build up a massive warchest from his own wealth and his contacts, promising a bill for large subsidies to tech companies (suspicious yet?) and tax cuts to 'developing industries' (if you're not seeing him as corrupt now, there's something wrong with you), which made him popular, roundly defeating the incumbent 55-45. He used this influence to bring his promises to fruition, keeping the Silicon Valley Techs, upper-class, young people and the tech community on his side. He continued fighting for tech companies, once attracting the ire of the Republican mainstream by rebelling against the whip on SOPA and PIPA, commenting that:

"As one of the founders of the modern internet, let me tell you that 80-year-old men in suits don't have any business telling the internet how to work."

He has always fought for the tech community, but he has also taken libertarian stances on abortion, gay marriage and even war. Any Republican whip will have trouble with Vohoffsky, particularly if he gains an ally or two...

Biography: Paul was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 8, 1946, as the eldest of four children. He was raised by a single black mom, who was a bartender. Growing up, his family moved 21 times and Paul was often charged with the responsibility of finding apartments they could afford. His mom was often domestically abused by her partner, but was afraid to break up with him because he was a wealthier salesman.

Paul wasn't a great student. He attended Cleveland State University and graduated from Case Western Reserve University with both a Bachelor and a Master of Arts degree in speech and communication. The Whitaker family is long and distinguished when it comes to the sectors of business and public service. Her great-grandfather, Abelard Psalmanazer Whitaker II (1878-1951) died a billionaire making his wealth in the shipping and logistics industry in the burgeoning center of Chicago (along with several choice investments), moving there from Massachusetts seeking to make it on his own, with a small investment from his Boston Brahmin family. He would have five children, two sons, and three daughters. It was expected his eldest, named after, would take the mantle of the family business, however, Abelard Psalmanazer Whitaker III (1900-1982) saw things differently. He was inspired to enter public service, leaving his younger brother and his branch of the family to run the family business, known today as the Whitaker Group. Abelard Whitaker III, upon graduating from Harvard University (benefits of his family connections) initially worked for his father's company in an administrative capacity, but constantly looked for ways to branch out. In 1930 he got his chance and moved he and his young family in Detroit for a job at a corporate office at an automotive firm there. He rose up the ranks, and used his newfound influence to leverage his way into upper-crust society, specifically politics. He gained a seat on the Detroit City Council in 1938 as a Democrat, and used this position as a platform for higher office and to spout his views. Whitaker soon became a mainstay on the Michigan, political scene, utilizing his wealth, charisma, and influence. In 1948 he attempted, successfully, a bid at the mayor's office of Detroit, winning easily, and serving a single two-year term, though elected not to serve another term to plan a bid for the senate in 1952; however following the Surprise death of incumbent senator Arthur Vanderberg, Whitaker leveraged his influence to get himself appointed to fill in the remainder of Vanderberg's term, he would attempt to win the special election, however, would be defeated, thus serving a year-long period from 1951-1952. In 1954, he successfully ran to challenge a Republican incumbent and would serve two terms in the Senate (1955-1967), losing again, re-election in 1966. Following this, he leveraged his wealth and status to carve up a major place in Michigan Democratic politics and would help one son in particular in his endeavors in politics.

Abelard Whitaker III had two children, one son, and one daughter. The one son would be William Coulter Whitaker (b. 1929), into whom he would engrain the spirit of public service in, and envisioned an even better political future for. William would prove very accepting of this and had grand plans of his own for his future. This Whitaker would spend 4 years in university, in order to pursue a bachelor's in political science, and like his father would attend Harvard to do so. Following graduation, feeling inspired by a military recruiter and the possibilities service could give, joined the US Army to fight in the Korean War, during its last two year. He was distinguished and disciplined in service and would return home in 1955. Following this, he would initially work for his father in his senate office, however, he grew bored in this position, and decided to attend law school instead, off his GI Bill money at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This was both to open a new career plan and to give him new credentials should he ever run for office. Which he was going to, but kept putting off year by year. In 1958 he graduated from UMich and had a woman there who he had married very quickly after meeting her in 1956-she was an undergrad named Julia Willard (1931-2004). Incidentally, his eldest child and only daughter was born that year: Helen Kerrigan Whitaker. He and his small family would move to Chicago where William would practice law. He would have another child, a son, named Abelard Psalmanazer Whitakever IV in 1959, however, he was born with severe birth defects and died a year later. He would have a second son named James Patrick Whitaker in 1961, however, he would die at the age of 17 from a car accident.

William Whitaker, now in his new job as a lawyer, was under constant pressure by his father to jump into politics. In 1964, the representative for Illinois' 6th seat retired, and William quickly jumped into the race as a Democrat, relying on active campaigning style and his easy access to money to win. Winning the primary and seat easily, his new congressional career was without note but he was known as an outspoken liberal, however, when his father lost re-election in 1966, the onus was now on William to carry the family's political banner. He was noted for his firebrand form of politicking and his passionate speaking style. He was redistricted out of his district in 1972 but rather than fight a fellow Democrat, plotted his future. In 1976, incumbent mayor of Chicago Richard J. Daley died in office, and in 1977 a special election was held. Whitaker jumped at the opportunity and with vigor, successfully primaried incumbent mayor Micheal Bilandic, and would win the spring general election. He oversaw a prosperous time of the city, though admittedly did very little himself, and however generally avoided the corruption of previous mayors; though he did very little actually. Whitaker would prove a Democratic Party hardline and an ally of the Carter administration; for his efforts, he was awarded the role of UN Ambassador in 1979. He would gladly accept this position over grumblings of his handling of the 1979 Blizzard in Chicago, which went so poorly it threatened to have him primaried, so he chose not to run again in 1979, and decided to focus on his nomination for the ambassadorship. It would a grueling confirmation process especially concerning experience, but he would be confirmed and sworn in by September 1979. He would serve from 1979 to 1981 of the Carter administration. It was during this time his second son would die, leaving him devasted as a father, and as a politician as he saw him as the face of the third generation of a political dynasty.

Following the Carter administration, Whitaker saw himself in a new light and eyed the White House for himself. First, though, he needed more experience and was willing to wait even another 8 years to make a run. As such, in 1982 he joined the race for Governor of Illinois and had wide approval from the party establishment, winning the primary easily. The general election would prove a challenge, however, but vigilant and active campaigning and a few crucial mistakes from his opponent sled to his victory. He would serve one term as governor (the 38th) from 1983 to 1987: choosing not to run for re-election in order to gain more time to prepare for a 1988 presidential run. In his term as governor, he was mostly preoccupied with Illinois budget and economic crisis, attempting several bipartisan measures to address it, to some results.

In 1987, a few months after the end of his term as governor, he officially entered the race for 1988 democratic primaries, the inevitable culmination of a long career. He started out as one of the front runners. And he would win Iowa, came second in New Hampshire. He would win a few more states before super Tuesday. However soon enough his campaign lost steam after weak results on super Tuesday and soon enough he found himself strapped for cash, and he dropped out after losing in Michigan by a large margin on March 29, 1988.

Whitaker was devasted by the results and withdrew into a brief depression. He would recover and feeling despondent over his career, sensing it was over, took a job teaching as a visiting fellow at the University of Chicago in 1989. He would soon become outspoken on the issues, however, and decided to involve himself in midterm elections in 1990. In 1991 during the 1992 Presidential election Democratic primaries, he endorsed Arkansas Governor James Clifford following a meeting. With his election, Whitaker would be appointed to and confirmed to his last political office; Secretary of State (the 63rd). He was confirmed in late January and would serve the entirety of Clifford's first term til January 1997 (note: he did everything Warren Christopher did), deciding not to continue due to pressure from Clifford and health concerns. He would retire peacefully, occasionally doing public speaker, lecturing, or opening centers in his name.


Helen Kerrigan Whitaker was born on March 23, 1956, at Ann Arbor in Michigan, a few months into her parent's marriage (incidentally, they were not married nine months before her). Her father was a 28-year-old veteran and law school student in the University of Michigan, and her mother a young 21-year-old undergrad at the university, majoring in English literature. Following both her father and mother's graduation, their small family would move back to Chicago, where her father had jobs lined up. Her father thought little of her future; especially as the head of his political dynasty; he would have a son for that. In 1959, her brother Abelard was born, but with severe birth defects and would find himself death within the year. This was devasting to her parents, and for Helen, her earliest memory, and one of the most transformative.

In 1961, her family would see a son who would not die immediately, James, and he would soon become his parents' favorite, and for her father William, he would see the entire future of the Whitaker dynasty in him, even from the youngest age. Despite this emotional neglect, Helen would still try her best to endear herself, especially to her father, and would gain a reputation as a 'trooper', soldiering on through any challenge in front of her from a young age. Like her brother, she would be sent to faraway elite boarding schools for her high school years, following private pre-secondary education. Her school would be the single-sex Rosemary Hall school in Connecticut. In school, she was decently gifted, and spurred on her natural intelligence with large amounts of personal effort, to the respect of her teachers. She was decently popular among her fellow students and would chair numerous clubs and societies. Whitaker would develop an interest in politics here, even more so to an extent than her younger brother, but from an observer's view. She imagined herself an analyst or writer, even a war correspondent, but not an active participant; that was to be her brother’s vocation, and she would happily support, though admittedly with a twinge of envy. She would graduate in 1974, with high honors.

For college, she was given more or less free reign over her choice of study; her father was unconcerned; she was not his star. Whitaker would study at Tufts University to study International Relations, not Harvard like previous generations of family; she wanted to strike out. Life here would be simple for Helen; she would resist the temptations of activist life (which was never really a thing at UPenn), but interestingly would join the Tufts Republican Party, and would serve in several capacities there. She would write for the student newspaper and would end up in a secondary leadership position. In her last year of college, her brother James would die in car crash at the age of 17 in 1978. Helen would become her father's only child, and all hopes, which Helen was never the center of before, were transferred to her. Suddenly Helen had a much closer relationship with her father than ever before, particularly united by grief, and her father's newfound ambitions for her. Whitaker graduated that same year.

Though Helen had little intention in seeking another degree (seeking to gain employment as a journalist or as a staffer in the Beltway), her father pushed her otherwise. After much deliberation, she decided upon another bachelor's degree, enrolling at the University of Oxford at Balliol College, to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) as a Rhodes Scholar. Here, life did not change dramatically, However here she would meet her future husband, Luis Sanchez, a graduate student from Spain in the field of economics. They would have a brief courtship, and on a nigh whim, would essentially elope in her final year, Sanchez, choosing to follow his wife back to the States. Whitaker had few intentions of changing her last name formally, but would decide to adopt the Spanish tradition of adding her husband's last name to the end of her full name, connected by a 'de', but would always refer to herself as just Whitaker. She would graduate in 1981.


Following graduation, Whitaker would seek employment as a policy analyst for the RAND Corporation in New York, though grew bored with this rather sedentary job. Thus she would then transfer to a job as a writer for the Boston Globe, and eventual war correspondent for the Iran-Iraq War (her father laying off her back due to his own prospects) for several outlets. The latter job would last 4 years from, from 1983 to 1987. Following this Whitaker would return to the US and volunteer to work for her father's 1988 presidential run, for which she would serve eventually as a paid spokeswoman. Following her father's withdrawal in March, she left to serve as a foreign policy writer for the liberal weekly magazine The Nation, and would soon come to serve as a regular talking head on cable news for issues relating to her areas of knowledge. She resided exclusively in New York at this time. Life was enjoyable for Whitaker, and though she knew she must and wanted to enter politics, she wanted to advance at a leisurely pace. Her husband worked in New York as an in-house economist for Goldman Sachs and would advance up the corporate ladder while she traveled.

With her father's ascension to Secretary of State in 1993, he now thought of ways to bring his daughter with him as well in some capacity, or at least bring her to prominence. Secretary Whitaker bargained with President Clifford for a role for his daughter, but the latter refused to give Helen any role where her father would be her supervisor, so State Department work was out of the question. Considering her experience and potential, Clifford offered her the low lever but promising role of Deputy National Security Advisor during his transition. Whitaker was initially hesitant but soon saw the opportunity in the position as a stepping stone. She and her family relocated to Washington D.C. (this family now consisted of a young daughter born in 1989). This was to the displeasure of her husband, who was working a stable job as a senior partner at Goldman Sachs, however he was able to be transferred a D.C. field office, stunting his advancement. Whitaker in this role would apply all her diligence in order to engender herself to her superiors and try to avoid the awful stain of nepotism. This was to impress her bosses, who grew satisfied with her work. However, by late 1994, problems and differences arose between Secretary William Whitaker and President Clifford, and the former had now publically stated that he would serve only for the first term, publically for health reasons. Helen would get caught in this minor rift, and while she was punished nor even disliked enough to be punished, Clifford decided it would be best to move her. She was offered the relatively low-level role of US Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in late January 1995, and was confirmed in March; this ironically placed her under the supervision of her father. Many at her confirmation hearing worried about her fitness for office and nepotism, however, her handling of questions at the hearing eased minds, and she was easily sent with near-unanimous support.

Her tenure at the OSCE was without much note, and much of it was spent scheming with her father for her political future. In 1998, the position of governor of Illinois was for the first time in a while became an open seat, and her father encouraged her to resign with him in January 1997 to plan a run a campaign for the seat; and most importantly, actually move to Illinois. Helen would accept this, and with her father resign, and her first order of business was to move her family to Chicago, a block away from her childhood townhouse. This again, annoyed her husband, but he was able to score a job as a Managing Director at the Lehman Brothers office in Chicago. She immediately set to work courting the State Democratic Party elite; her name and father's support got her far; by her announcement in May 1997, she had acquired a hefty war chest and major party support. The primary was essentially cleared for her, winning 60% to 29% to her nearest challenger. In the general campaign, her opponent was Republican former state Secretary of State, which initially was close, but she outspent him 5:1 and maintained a great ground game. But many noticed one thing, that with all the trappings of political success around her, Whitaker herself was unexciting and wonky; a staffer said of the ordeal, “the campaign is excellent; the candidate is not”. The coolheadeness and calm that had served her well as a pundit was proving a deadweight and her carpetbagging appearance did not help. However staff devised a strategy; it was realized that when it came to intimate gatherings and one-on-one conversation, Whitaker shined; as thus, fewer stump speeches were scheduled, and more county fair stops, interviews, and door-to-door campaigns were. This did not allow her to cover as much ground, but she avoided gaffes and her perception as distant. She would win 53% to 46% in 1998.


Upon her inauguration, Whitaker had an extended honeymoon period due to her good reputation and popularity of her family name. One of her first initiatives was to declare a moratorium on the death penalty within the state, following investigations into irregularities with the prison system and the high possibility many innocent prisoners were put to death. She would eventually sign into law in early 2000 a formal ban on capital punishment within Illinois prisons. She was a champion of Progressive reform, especially in regards to corruption, with several ethics reforms during her term. Further, she expanded state health programs to cover even more Illinois citizens, taking advantage of the fact her predecessor left her with a budget surplus. Whitaker started a state earned income tax credit in 2001. She would coast to re-election in 2002, but on policy alone.

In her second term, Whitaker turned to even more progressivism. She managed to increase the education budget without raising any taxes and attempted to do universal pre-k, which was adopted in a very limited form in 2005. She signed a bill in 2005 that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing, public accommodations, and credit.

However, despite these successes which earned praise and high approval ratings, Whitaker suffered a defeat in her attempt to start a huge infrastructure project which would've been the most expensive in state history in 2005. This was voted down in the state legislature and described an election-year ploy. Throughout her terms, she was accused of cronyism, gifting favorable positions to allies in senior levels of government, and often using underhanded tactics to isolate opposition, especially within her own party. She also developed here her habit of operating within an insular circle of advisors and friends, often refusing to trust those outside her circle-those who found themselves serving her here would find positions in her later offices. Her chief of staff as governor would also serve the same role at Whitaker’s Senate tenure and at the State Department. This social isolation was compounded by her lack of natural charisma, and often led to a fraught relationship with the legislature should they not agree with her policies.

However, by 2007, leaving office (choosing not to run for a third term in 2006 for planning reasons) Whitaker was a popular, if not respected, governor of Illinois. Her father encouraged her to monopolize this and attempt a presidential run, and many speculated this as well, given her decision to not run for re-election; but she refused, endorsing Senator and former First Lady Diana Clifford initially. Though in late 2007, the incumbent senator of Illinois declared that he would not run for re-election in 2008 to his seat. Whitaker would jump on the opportunity, and ran, wining primary and election easily.


In her new role as Senator, Whitaker would prove herself an ally of new President Baharia’s agenda. But she was not by any means a visible senator, having lost the platform of governor, and resigned herself to the back halls of Congress diligently working with her colleagues to advance the Democratic agenda but did not strike out her own. She voted with the party on most bills and collaborated within it. Whitaker was able, notably, to strike up relationships with Republicans, often through her personal touch not easily visible from the outside. She sat most prominently on the Senate Foreign Affairs committee. She would endorse Baharia in his re-election.

In late 2012, with the announcement of the retirement of Secretary of State and former senator and First Lady Diana Clifford, the Baharia administration sought out replacements. Whitaker was widely speculated to be a leading candidate for this position, given her seat as chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs committee, her experience as an ambassador and advisor, and her career as a writer on foreign policy and her war correspondent experience. Not to mention, her excellent connections, her name, and her great working relationship with the White House. Baharia’s personal top pick had also withdrew herself from consideration, Ieaving the spot open for Whitaker. On December 15th, 2012, she was announced as the White House’s nominee as the 68th Secretary of State. She was confirmed almost unanimously on January 29th, and resigned from the Senate on February 1st, being sworn in the same day. Concerns were brought over her marriage and her husband’s deep connections, especially to the financial industry.

In the Truman Building, Whitaker would set to work on the Baharia administration second-term foreign policy goals. One of her first initiatives were the 2013-2014 Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, which resulted in very little action but opened new dialogues. She would meet her Iranian counterpart at the P5+1 meetings in Geneva, leading to a long series of negotiations that would lead to the JCPOA nuclear agreement or the Iran Deal; this was to become her main legacy, considering her active participation in these talks and was generally seen as the true ‘mastermind’ behind the US side of negotiations. Whitaker advocated for a military strike and a use of force against the Syrian government following a chemical attack attributed to the Syrian Government, characterizing Assad as a ‘mad despot clinging to power’, and saying the only way a military strike could be avoided was for the regime to relinquish all chemical weapons. These strong words would later lead to a process that would see Syria relinquish it’s chemical weapons and join the UN’s regulatory treaties on such things, as its ally Russia saw Whitaker’s remarks as a serious proposal, and pressured Assad to go through with what were more candid remarks. Infamously, Whitaker was seen as ‘betraying Israel’ in late December 2016, after the US abstained from a vote in the U.N. to condemn Israeli settlement policy, and would strongly rebuke the Israelis and criticize the settlements, explain the US reasoning behind abstaining from the vote.

Whitaker oversaw the “Cuban Thaw” or the normalization of relations between the United States and Communist Cuba, however this was largely an executive-driven process. When it came to Latin America as a whole, Whitaker championed a new ‘good neighbor’ strategy, calling for the end of the ‘Monroe Doctrine era’, and that the US must view Latin countries as equals on the world stage.

Environmentalism would become important to Whitaker signing the Paris Climate Accords in 2016 on behalf of the United States. She would become the highest-ranking US official to visit Antartica, staying overnight to discuss and meet with researchers, and experience she characterized as a ‘wake-up call for me and the planet’ in 2016 as well. Whitaker would champion alternate energy sources such as nuclear or solar power, especially for developed nations, whom she believed needed to reach carbon neutral status by 2030, and further characterized climate change as ‘the most pressing national security issue of our time’.

The State Department under Whitaker would become highly centralized under her, and few decisions were made without her approval, which according to staffers, ‘made things unbelievably slow’, especially as she made frequent foreign trips, making it hard for State employees to reach her. Further, Whitaker seemed to lack a cohesive long term strategy, often bouncing from one thing to another. Like many of her predecessors, Whitaker would use a private e-mail server for most communications, though it never came under proper scrutiny, unlike Diana Clifford and more like her Republican predecessors. However, Baharia would characterize her tenure as ‘excellent’, and public opinion of her and her effectiveness remained high throughout her tenure.

Whitaker was speculated as a possible 2016 Democratic presidential candidate by a few media outlets, however, she immediately took herself out of the running in early 2015 and endorsed her predecessor and former First Lady Diana Clifford for the nomination. Whitaker was later considered a possible Vice Presidential candidate, but again withdrew herself from any serious consideration.

With Clifford’s lost in 2016 to Wolf, Whitaker attempted to prepare her incoming successor and their team on national security issues to ensure a smooth transition and a general vague continuation of US foreign policy commitments. However, the Wolf administration saw her legacy torn to shreds with the US leaving the JCPOA, the Paris Accords, the rise of rampant climate denialism, and tensions rising in Cuba again.


Now out of any formal elected office and with the Democratic Party in tatters due to their loss, Whitaker finally saw her chance for the highest office in 2020. She would emerge as a strong critic of Wolf’s policies and actions, participating in several protests against him and his administration. She joined as a member of the Board of Directors of the Clifford Foundation in early 2017. In late 2017 she went on a national lecture tour, drawing heavy speculation her future prospects especially as he visited key states like Iowa and New Hampshire, and at the same time secretly began courting endorsements and fundraising commitments. At the same time, she began fundraising, initially for candidates in the 2018 midterms, but for an independent political action committee, but officially she was not stating anything on her intentions. In early 2018, she began working on a memoir titled Another Day with a team of ghostwriters, a reflection on her time primarily on elected office and Secretary of the State, the latter especially. This was to be published on November 2018. Incidentally, at that same time, Whitaker started an exploratory committee, the earliest of the major candidates to do so, and stated publically her interest in running. An announcement or a final decision is expected by February of 2019. Her father, as you would imagine, is very pleased by this, and spearheaded many of these efforts.

Privately supportive of a land-value tax, and a federal consumption tax; the income tax could be eliminated in favor the last two as a budget source. Raise the estate tax.
Criminal justice reform: In favor of abolishing the death penalty. Focus on rehabilitation and treatment for first-time offenders, especially those on narcotics. End mandatory minimums. Dedicate funding to ensure the use of police body cameras nationwide. Bias and situation de-escalation program for officers nationwide, and dedicated funding for such programs.
Education: Against tuition-free four year college. Universal pre-k proponent. For student loan debt she is in favor of: capping the amount of loan repayment to discretionary income at 10% should be a viable option for more borrowers, improve financial literacy by high school education, and allow student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy. Likes common core. Charter schools are okay, but shouldn’t take money away from regular school districts. Supportive of apprenticeship programs and trade schools as an alternative path to college.
Women’s Issues: Pro-Choice, full stop. Does not want to defund Planned Parenthood. Full supporter of the ERA. Believes contraception must be provided by healthcare.
Housing: Massive deregulation in zoning laws in order to increase high-density buildings and urbanize America; i.e. elimination of dedicated single-family housing and loosen historical building designation. This is mainly to address rising house prices by simply creating more supply to meet demand, especially in urban centers, and allow developers more freedom in building especially incentivizing multiple family units. Supportive of the US government starting a program to building housing itself and rent it out in order to keep rent prices low overall as private landlords would have to compete, inspired loosely by council houses in the UK. Anti-NIMBY to the core.
Unions and Labor Issues: Big support of unions. Anti-right to work legislation. Fifteen dollars an hour minimum wage, however, the minimum wage should be scaled with inflation. Better funding for groups such as OSHA to ensure workplace safety, and install even more stringent safety regulations where the law doesn’t cover.
Israel: Soft ally and supporter. Though critical of some government actions especially in regards to settlement, and believes the US should use it influences to curtail such things.
Social Security: Eliminate the earnings cap on payroll taxes, raise the retirement age, and institute means-testing for benefits.
Agriculture: Cut farming subsidies in favor of new tax credits and investments in green farming to reduce thing such as methane emissions and get US agriculture industry in line with future demand.
LGBT+ Issues: Right to marry, opposes gender identity discrimination, believes these groups should not be allowed to be denied service, right to use bathrooms they identify with-the whole progressive shebang.

Biography: Abby Winthrop was born to a solidly middle class family in Reading, Pennsylvania. Although her father was a truck driver and remained so for most of his life, her mother was the main breadwinner in her family, being a public school teacher. Winthrop attended public school in Reading, where she became used to the high level of poverty in her city. In fact, according to the national census, Reading had the highest share of American citizens living in poverty in the entire country. Winthrop still expresses how lucky she felt to have access to good teachers like her mother, who she credits for getting her ahead in life, more so than her school. Her father had a heart condition, and Winthrop often recounts how the family sometimes used to struggle to pay for his medicine.

Winthrop was taught advanced learning material at home by her mother, and thus she was an excellent student. She graduated at the top of her class and she got into Boston University. However, due to her parent's economic condition, she took out quite a large student loan. Winthrop majored at BU in Economics. She wasn't a politically active student; she didn't even register with a political party. But, while at college, Winthrop started to understand certain issues facing Americans. She came to realize while doing various research projects in class how broken the US economic system was. After being shocked by the extent of income inequality in America, Winthrop applied to Harvard Law School hoping to become a labor lawyer, and got in. After completing law school and joining the bar, Winthrop decided to specialize in labor law; she wanted to help workers and unions prosecute cases against corporations who were abusing their power. She caught the eye of a progressive Congressman, who brought her to Capitol Hill to partake in a questioning of the CEO of a major retail corporation. Winthrop's tough and specific questioning went viral, which gained her some recognition.

She soon realized that she was really struggling to pay off her student loans, since labor lawyers are not paid much. She decided to quit law and become an economist instead, which turned out to be a terrible decision in terms of salary but a great decision for her personal knowledge. She was employed as an adjunct economics professor at Amherst College. She was given a grant at Amherst to do research on two topics: student loans and housing. Winthrop did pathbreaking work on both. Her detailed paper on tuition deferral programs in colleges to solve the student loan crisis became a popular idea amongst leftists and liberals alike, and her really detailed idea for a Universal Housing Voucher gained steam. She became a regular op-ed columnist for the New York Times, and became one of the country's most visible economists as well as a progressive icon, even though she was apolitical. Winthrop was invited to several forums, universities, etc., which helped her make more money and finally pay off her own loans.

As the elderly Democratic senator for Massachusetts retired, several "Draft Winthrop" organizations sprang up, and she agreed run for the office to bring "Policy for People over Profits" to the Senate. She did not, however, have it easy. A party-backed neoliberal Congressman was also in the race, and the Massachusetts Democratic Party did not want an outsider in the Senate. It's not that Winthrop was anti-establishment as such, she was just not experienced. But the people of Massachusetts took a liking to her, and she did win after a bruising primary where she had to show her true progressive colors. However, due to the limited support she received from the state Democratic Party early on, she turned down the nomination and ran as an independent. Because she was leading so heavily in general election polls, the state party decided to back her in the general, although her future elections are not safe. She went on to handily win the Massachusetts general election, thus being elected as the Junior Senator for Massachusetts.

Winthrop's time in the Senate has been complicated. While her caucus appreciates her wonkish nature, she has been heavily disliked for her (restrained but consistent) criticism of the two party system. Despite being a self-described social democrat, her colleagues have referred to her as a "socialist" and she has not denied the label. She has also attracted controversy for her supposed atheism, which she had not expressed publicly until resurfaced essays have released on the web. Past essays she has written that have been critical of all religion have been called into question by Democrats and Republicans, as she has heavily criticized both Christianity and Islam.

Winthrop has made student loans and housing the key issues of her focus during her current tenure in the Senate. She has also been a big advocate for trust-busting legislation; she has been the only Senator to advocate for the unique idea of breaking up the media companies: NewsCorp, Spectrum, and NBC. She has expressed support for all major progressive ideas, including Medicare for All, free college, and a Green New Deal.
