Actually, that's pretty much the plot of "Dark Imperium" and "Plague War". Just add some galpower - I'm thinking that snarky dark-skinned historian and the Sororita sister that goes around killing Imperial personnel - re-imagined as bikini-wearing granola girls.

How the Tau manage to always get themselves into nose-to-nose close combat in those artworks is beyond me.

Image

Even the IG is kicking their asses in CC. (Altough the one who takes the cake is the poor doofus who somehow impaled himself on an old construction bar.)

Image

Close Combat against both Typhus AND Mortarion? They are so triple-dead.

Image

The Space Wolf looks as if he is almost pitying that poor Tau bloke whose pule rifle he is gently pushing away.

And it always seems to be the same Sept, judging by their white and red uniforms. Methinks that they are infamous in the rest of the Tau Empire for being the "Leeroy Jenkins" sub-faction.

Admittedly it'll be pretty boring artwork if its Tau taking potshots from two miles away.

Yeah it's pretty much the standard "desperate last stand" that makes up a solid majority of all ye bigge gw arts.
Plus close combat is pretty much one of the defining elements of 40k so the tau simply can't be allowed to avoid it.

There is a lot of artwork of Tau just shooting at stuff, especially their battle suits, but GW loves those big "Two Armies clashing" art pieces

Came across this cool piece of fan art of Tau just fucking gunning guardsmen and Space marines at range

Id say Eisenhorn and Ravenor series. They were not the first things I had read by a long away but they really stood out above pretty much. I think Ravenor is peak Dan Abnett and probably the best 40k series I have read thus far.

Ghosts, Cain, Macharian crusade, Talon of Horus, Last Chancers, Tome of fire ( salamanders series), Demon World, Silver skulls portents, Farsight crisis of faith are the other ones that stand out having a glance at my bookshelves.

Also not 40k but I love the Darkblade series.

Completed the Chaos Campaign in Battlefleet Gothic II

Was quite enjoyable.

Chaos does chaos things and your supporting fellow word bearer lord turns on you in the final mission! Hot damn who could have seen that coming! Me, when the Desecrated Macragge's Honour joined the battle not under my control whilst i took on the Phalanx and Admiral Spire

Well he's fucking dead, and Malos is gona go after Abbadon for warmaster, fun chaos stuff for the whole family to enjoy.

The longer series I've sort of read mixed up so I don't know if it matters, some of them are over 10 books, I think The ghosts are at 15 or 16, Cain at 10.

I think Talon of Horus would be the place to start, the 2nd book black legion just came out over the summer as well. It's on my to read list. Dembski-bowden is an excellent writer as he tells a very good story without succumbing to too much action. It might be a grim dark universe but 100% blood letting usually makes for a poor novel. From what I remember I don't think you really need a lot of background 30/40k knowledge because the first half of this book is setting up the important characters for the trilogy so you should get most of what you need to know from that. It's basically the story of how the Black legion came to be told from the point of view of a Thousand suns sorcerer. I think it stands alone pretty well.

Below is the blurb.

When Horus fell, his Sons fell with him. A broken Legion, beset by rivalries and hunted by their erstwhile allies, the former Luna Wolves have scattered across the tortured realm of the Eye of Terror. And of Abaddon, greatest of the Warmaster’s followers, nothing has been heard for many years. But when Horus’s body is taken from its resting place, a confederation of legionaries seek out the former First Captain, to convince him to embrace his destiny and continue what Horus began.

So for the past couple of days I've had a mad frenzy of an idea- create a Chaos army but their bases are all pleasant meadows with lots of flowers.

Couldn't find much when I looked it up too, except for this absolute gem.
