What is the Navy Day Festival?
Navy Day is a national holiday which was implimented by the government of Port Ember once it gained independance from Great Britian in 1950 in order to commemorate the long and rich maritime history of the nation, celebrate the achievements and success of the nations maritime achievements and honor the sacrifices of the naval forces of Port Ember.
The Naval Day national holiday has expanded from just being a normal national holiday, into a full blown annual festival of international standards, whilst still remaining true to the original concept of Commemorate, Celebrate and Honor.
The festival is in essence a massive party, organised by the Navy with the aim of entertaining and informing the populace, whilst strengthening ties with foreign navies and shopping for new maritime technology.
Background Lore - Maritime History of Port Ember
Just to give a slight idea of what Port Ember is actually celebrating, here is a few 'Bullet Points' of the maritime history involved:
- The Kingdom of Ember was established in 1200ad by japanese slaves who shipwrecked onto the island and established their new home on the islands, attracting runaway slaves and convicts from the world over. These influx of violent characters caused uncountable civil wars, and the only way the kings could keep its subjects united was by building boats and raiding other nations. Thus from an early stage of the nation, the ocean provided means to unify the strongly individualist nation.
- Great Britian arrived on the Ember Islands in 1500ad, and used its overwhelming naval power to destroy the Ember Kingdom and colonise the islands in the name of the Queen, bringing superior weapons and naval technology to the islands.
- Around 1600ad the islands were a wealthy and bustling colony, situated on lucritave maritime trade routes. This, combined with weak military and political strength from the governor quickly and easily attracted privateers and pirates from accross the multiverse to settle on the islands and practice their bloody trade.
- In 1620ad the Black Incident occured - (The new British Governor attempted to quell piracy, and as an example had a famous female pirate captain be brutally and publicly beaten, gang raped, tortured and executed. The remaining pirates rallied together and slaughtered all British soldiers, including the governor, and subsequently formed the Copperbeard Consortium - and proclaimed themselves the new rulers of a new free Port Ember). This small free pirate nation terrorised the european powers for a hundred years until being finally crushed in 1720. This period has always been one of the most celebrated times of Port Emberian history, and remains an important part of modern culture and heritage.
- After being recolonised by Great Britian, the islands entered a period known as The Golden Age of Trade, where maritime trading brought immense wealth to the entire island, uplifting the living standards of the populace to even higher levels of european nations at that time.
- Port Ember, still a colony of Great Britian, entered both world wars on the side of the Allies, where they contributed heavily in the naval campaign against the axis, proving to be some of the best sailors and naval commanders in the world.
- Port Ember gained its independance from Great Britian in 1950, by displaying its seriousness for the cause by capturing the entire visiting British Fleet. Thus the Porr Emberian Navy will always remain part of the patriotic notions of the nation.
- Port Ember has continued to build on its proud maritime history in the modern era, and has become one of the world leaders in international trade, and possesses one of the largest Merchant Marines and busiest ports in the world.
- Port Ember has continued to build on its proud naval history in the modern era, and is considered one of the largest, strongest and most decorated blue water navies in the world.
- Port Ember has also become one of the world leaders in shipbuilding and ship technology, boasting the ultra successfull Umberlee Shipyards and Port Ember Maritime University as evidence.

Program Specific Rules & Guidelines for IC
- 08:00 - 08:30: Grand Opening of the Festival by the Port Emberian Minister of Defence - Hon Jan Breytenbach.
☆ This will take place outside, in front of the The University Central Manor.
☆ All accepted characters must start off their first post allready present here for the opening. I am avoiding the ten page 'en route to the venue' scenario. (Except for characters on board a warship, see the next item on the program)
- 08:30 - 10:00: Welcoming Ceremony of Naval Forces.
☆ This will take place at the University Dock. All Warships will arrive here at this stage of the RP only.
☆ Each warship must fly two flags when they enter the dock - Their own flag of origin, and a smaller flag of the Republic of Port Ember. This is a symbolic sign of respect for Port Ember and shows that they are entering the dock as friends and in solidarity with the Republic.
☆ Each warship must fire two blank cannon shots before entering the dock. This is a symbolic sign of respect for Port Ember and shows that they are entering the dock as friends and in solidarity with the Republic. (Basically one cannon shot salute for both their own nation, and one for Port Ember)
☆ The crew who wishes to disbark and join the festival (The Captain is compulsary), must do it at this stage of the RP. The crowds are onshore, greeting you with cheers.
- 10:00 - 12:00: International Shipyard Promotion.
☆ This will take place inside the Alpha Hall.
☆ The shipyard companies must have a display prepared here, and do some soft marketing to both civilians and military personnel. The other characters are free to view the displays here during this time.
- 12:00 - 14:00: Lunch.
☆ All Invited Guests (warship captains and others whom I invite) will attend the VIP lunch at The University Central Manor.
☆ Other festival-goers are free to do as they please during this time, either visit the Pirates Beard Tavern or the University Park - Food Court, to choose from a wide variety of festival food.
- 14:00 - 16:00: Naval Forces Parade.
☆ This will take place at the Campus Parade Ground. All warship crews must partake in a short drill parade here, with the festival-goers cheering you on.
☆ Please note that only the Port Emberian Naval Band will perform music here.
☆ Please note that if the crew carries weapons for the drill - these may not be loaded with ammunition under any circumstances.
- 16:00 - Late: Festivities.
☆ This is very much a free for all mingle stage. The Tavern will be a good place to go, or the food court, and the beer tent will be open now. Also the University Open Air Theatre will now be operational and bands will perform till late (I will release the band schedule once I have enough entries)
