Which flag should I use?

Postby New Solaurora » Sun Aug 25, 2019 1:20 pm

Howdy,
recently I've decided to change my flag and have been trying out several over the past week but I cannot decide which one to use. So I am leaving it in the hands of the internet. (Maybe not the best decision but we'll see how it goes.)

Flag A
My original flag design.

Image

Flag B
Original design with thin white stripe.

Image

Flag C
Original design with thick white stripe.

Image

Flag D
Darkened version with thick white stripe. (currently in use)

D

But all are good, though A should be the lesser choice

Okay so my current flag is tied with my original flag then.

Most intriguing...

Anything but A! Flag A breaks the rule of tincture and looks weird as a result.

Go with D.

Separate darker colours with light and vice-versa.

What are the rules of tincture?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_tincture

metal should not be placed upon metal, nor colour upon colour

They're rules for heraldry, but also used for flag design. Basically, colors are separated into "metals" -- gold and silver (yellow and white) -- and "colours" -- blue, red, purple, black, and green. A "metal" should not butt up against another metal, nor be placed over one. Same goes for "colours."

At first glance, this may seem rather arbitrary, and just another weird quirk from the past that can be ignored. But it is actually quite helpful to attempt to follow this heraldic rule, as it stems from color design. The Rule of Tincture, for instance, aids in contrast. So if blue and red are placed directly next to one another, as in your first design, they kind of mush together in an unflattering manner. However, with the white bar between them, the colors pop more and are more easily distinguished.

Also, I have read that Black can be used like a metal, along with white and yellow. I more or less agree.

Okay so just a quick question. (I probably should have included this in my original post) Do you guys like D more because it has darker colors because its practically the same as C?

Yeah, I chose D because of the darker colors. The designs of B-C-D are so similar, there's not a ton to distinguish them. Looking closer at B, I might like it more, if it also had darker colors

Okay so clearly you guys just like the darker colors so instead of making two more flags I'm just going to remove option D and see which base design is most popular.

with that id say option A the design just feels more well thought out without a break between the red and blue.

Where would grey fit in this rule? Common sense says it's a metal but in practice it looks like a color when applied to flags (just look at mine). Maybe light grey is a metal but dark grey a color?

Black is definitely a color, just look at Albania's flag.

D. The darker color scheme works better IMO.

This is no longer based off of colors scheme. I'm simply asking which of the three first designs is best.
