Fifth Annual AVBF Sevens Tournament (2019 Edition)

Welcome all to the third edition of the AVBF 7s Tournament in the beautiful Confederacy of Neu Engollon! Please, make yourselves at home and prepare for an exciting competition!

THE FESTIVAL

An annual tradition, the Alpen View Brew Festival is on its seventh edition. It is always held in Confederacy Park in Burgunden, in the canton of Zurich. Burgunden is the largest city by far in the Confederacy with a greater metro population of 14 million. The festival, while revolving around beer and other brewed and distilled beverages, also features a main stage of live music and dance music deejayed from a secondary stage modeled especially for DJs. Live music is provided by the likes of popular Neu Engollian bands such as the Podunkers, Groma, Frigid Mares, Servonaris and Alpen Volken Circle, as well as several international sensations like the Chrysalides, Royalists, Pinc Fionnghall, Timeline Tremors, Katarina Klamaja and Velociraptor Rex.
In addition, there are several booths of entertainment, as well as the auxiliary grounds next to the main park where the rugby pitches are located. In years past, these auxiliary grounds have hosted travel and technology exhibitions, carnival games, role playing board game groups, virtual reality booths and mazes made from vegetation.

The format and schedule are below:

30 teams: 5 groups of 6, single round-robin (three games the first IC day and two the second), the top two teams in each group advance to the Cup competition. The remaining teams will be divided into two brackets of 10: 3rd and 4th place finishers will contest the Plate, while 5th and 6th place finishers will contest the Bowl.

SCORINATION, RP & CUTOFFS

As described in the OOC thread, I will be using the rugby union sevens function of xkoranate 0.3.3. Ranks from the past AVBF #4, Rugby World Cup 4, Watson’s Bay, Savojar tournaments are being used, based off this NSRB 7’s ranking chart. Aside from previous earned rank, RP will be your other main form of gaining skill points for your team. Quality over quantity is preferred, as always. Posting a roster will be rewarded with points as well.

Cutoffs will be between 22:30-00:00 EST (UTC-4), although I will alert you all via the OOC thread should there be a change. PLEASE keep aware of the OOC schedule as there are some days that will be skipped for scorination, and other days (weekends) that will be scored in a row.

The standard rugby sevens points system will be in effect for this tournament where: 3 points are awarded for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss, and 0 for a forfeit.

Tiebreakers will be (in order): 1. Head-to-head result between the tied teams.
2. Difference in points scored and allowed during pool play.
3. Points scored during pool play.
4. Coin toss (higher RP points).

Lisander rugby at war! Irises Sevens selected without TOP12 players!

Valls Rugby keeps as LRU Matchday Supplier.

These are times of change in world rugby. Lisander is getting closer and closer to the top of the world and I honestly believe all this confusion is a sign of evolution. You have to put problems on the table and discuss them to evolve. We can see changes on all sides. APOC Coalition lost its Fleftic teams that entered the national system "on demand" from the Champions Trophy organization. There is also the resumption of the still confused, almost unofficial Sevens Series due to the change in management of the NSRB. But the problem that bothers most Irises fans is the question between LRU and TOP12, which remains unsolved.

The Saracens-led Lisander league ring-fencing plans were massively suppressed by the LRU, with threats of expulsion from the Union and consequently from the national team. The last chapter of this story took place tonight when Rugby Director Leonard Assen presented the list of 12 squads for AVBF Sevens. Assen's choices, made in conjunction with Gaetan Morian, angered even some members of the LRU themselves, who had opposed the Union's "retribution" to first division clubs.

Half of the Irises come from teams from the LRU Championship, the national second division. Four come from international professional teams, which is a historic break with the policy of calling only players currently in Lisander. The last two are college students. Matias Baudelaire, already in his senior year at Midland University, returns to the Sevens team, while Cyril Dunn, Prop of the national university champion Politechnica Soria, makes his international debut before signing his first professional contract.

Asked by the press for the lack of names like Christian Alte and Mis Morian, both from Saracens (Mis is coach Gaetan Morian's cousin), Assen said casually: "If Saracens needs them so much for the Champions Trophy, I'll leave them there, and they don't have to worry about the Irises." Ironically, the last team Leonard Assen coached before taking on the coaching position (and then Rugby Director) of the Irises was Saracens.

Head Coach - Jan Habana
Nickname: The Rastas

Overview
Ouna's international gallivanting on the NSSports stage is in full swing as the Pan-African nation has entered its 2nd tournament of its existence. Following on from the enormous success of their World Cup Qualifying run, where they recorded victories over giant sporting nations such as Cosumar, the Ounaians are now trying their hands at Rugby Sevens.

Rugby is by far the most popular sport in Ouna, and the players and fans are happy to show their skills on the international level, however it is the code of Rugby League which is the most popular within the small country.

The roster for the Sevens team is made up of mostly Rugby League players, but Head Coach Jan Habana insists it won't be an issue.

"In Ouna, from a very young age you are taught the rules of RU and RL and are expected to play the two interchangeably. The school system here plays a hybrid of the two codes in fact. The players we have got are the most skilled in the country and superstars at the national level. The most difficult aspect will be learning how to play with only seven players, as Sevens is not really anything these boys have any experience with."

The League attracted its star players by placing an ad on the O.R.F.L web-page with the headline 'DO YOU LIKE DRINKING BEER?' which provided a link to the AVBF site. It was rumored the entire league sat outside the doors of the League headquarters wanting to sign for the competition (with the exception of the mostly Muslim Muhanmaga Sultans, who have boycotted the competition because of the connection to AVBF).

Who knows whether the lads are just here for a royal piss-up, or whether they think they might have the chance to bring home Ouna's first international trophy? It will be an interesting watch either way.

KITS

Image

The Ounaian Rugby Associations have very controversially went for sky blue for the teams home kit this competition, for some reason. Maybe it is a political message, however most of the population only know that they do not like it. Ouna has recently underwent a transformation politically and in terms of national identity, and this may be seen as a reference to the country's previous flag - which contains a sky blue lion in the center. The kit will contain a cannabis leaf in a crest as its logo, rather than the countries flag, which will hopefully confuse viewers abroad.

LINE-UP

Image

This is one potential line-up for the team as created by us. Slettenaar is by far the most talented winger in the tournament and will be sure to start. Also, having captain Klocht and his Newcastle Scorpions team-mate Moddejonge in fly-half and scrum-half seems like an obvious choice.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football (or soccer; American football is called "gridiron" and is considered a niche sport at best). Rugby union is the most popular form in Elejamie, with rugby league having a small but loyal fanbase. However, it wasn't until 2016 when there finally was an officially sanctioned rugby sevens tournament was announced: The ERC 7s, which begins on the fourth Friday of August and lasts for three days. Simply put, all twelve teams in that season's ERC (Elejamian Rugby Championship) are divided into two groups of six and play a single round robin tournament to see whether they'll play for the Cup, the Plate or the Bowl. The first group's games are played on the Friday, the second group's games are played on the following Saturday and the semi-finals, 3PPOs and Cup/Plate/Bowl finals are played on Sunday afternoon/evening. The fourth tournament in Rosetta saw the Avon Knights come back from their defeat last year with a 23-10 win over the Murgon Bullfrogs. The Auckhampton Birch Trees also managed to bounce back from last year, beating the Rosetta Sparrows 11-9, whereas the newly-repromoted Mainsborough Delphi were obliterated 37-0 by the Alvis Rams.

In the last AVBF Sevens, which turned out to be the last sevens tournament for a while given the failure of the Sevens Series (sorry about that), Elejamie were a slight favourite going into the tournament and showed off their prowess with a 26-10 win over Blaneu in their first match. However, they'd go on to fall 26-19 to Savojarna that afternoon before bouncing back with a 29-19 win over the Natanians and Nosts. They repeated that score the following morning in their game against Barunia before demolishing Apox 31-5 in their last group stage game to finish behind Savojarna, who had swept all of their matches. In the cup quarter-finals, they had just narrowly edged out hosts Neu Engollon in a 21-19 win thanks to a last-minute try and conversion from Gary Toda before they were edged out themselves, this time 19-17 to eventual runners up Hutanjia. Although they didn't receive anything due to a lack of a third place playoff, they were still pleased they did as well as they did and, with the WV-a-side being the current world champions in union and the XIII-a-side finishing runners-up in the last Rugby League World Cup, the VII-a-side are hoping to make it to three consecutive finals and, hopefully, lift the Maracalo Cup for the second time.

The Kriegiersien Rugby 7 Team is reigning Olympic Champion. They won the title even after a horrendous 0-40 loss against the Locharian Olympic Team in the group stage and reaching the Play Offs barely by pure luck.

From there they were able to beat Kernoviand and Rewglas, Electrum, Britonensia and Mattijana on their way to Gold, avoiding the few Top Teams also present at the AVBF, like title defender Neu Engollon. It was one of the biggest days in Kriegiersien Sport History, were Rugby is held high, especially played in the army.

The team send to this competition has only Olympic team captain Damian Druid as only winner of the Gold medal left. The rest of the team are the best players from the Black Market Beer League (BMBL), one of the many Kriegiersien Rugby leagues, which also sponsors the team. The Breweries standing behind this league also intended to send their representatives to the Brewery competition.

RIRFU ANNOUNCES SQUAD FOR AVBF RUGBY SEVENS

PORT HARRINGTON - Sir Greg Price, President of the Ross Isles Rugby Football Union, announced the composition of the national rugby sevens team at a press conference held in Port Harrington last night. 1 - PR - Henry Wallace (Port Harrington)
2 - PR - David Griffiths (Prince of Wales County)

Dave Carrey's Brief Guide to the Fifth AVBF Rugby Sevens, Group A
Dave Carrey - Burgenden, Neu Engollon

After the double whammy that was us winning the Rugby Union World Cup and making it to the Rugby League World Cup final (which we sadly failed to score any points in), the world of international rugby just seemed to go quiet. No sevens tournaments or even a revival of the Sevens Series, no attempts to bring back that somewhat controversial U20 rugby tournament, no nothing. Fortunately, all we had to do was wait a little while and boom, the AVBF Sevens shows up for its fifth installment. The big one, the longest-running sevens tournament still going here, as well as the titular Alpine View Brew Festival that it accompanies, is back for another go around.

So, last time then. It didn't go as well as planned. I mean, sure, we got off to an excellent start with a 26-10 win over Blaneu but things came crashing down to earth with a 26-19 defeat to Savojarna to push us down to fourth; even though we bounced back with a 29-19 win over the Natanians and Nosts, it still wasn't enough to push us into the top third. We won again by that scoreline against Barunia, a team who had beaten us in the Rugby World Cup Final sometime before this one, before cementing our place in the Cup stage with a 31-5 thrashing of Apox. Unfortunately, that was where the wheels fell off for us as we clearly should've stuck to the Plate stage, as that would've been smoother sailing for us. Why do I say that? A 21-19 win against hosts Neu Engollon, which doesn't seem so bad. However, this was shortly followed up by a defeat to Hutanjia by that same scoreline and, with no third place playoff, we couldn't try and rebound from that defeat. It wasn't all bad as Midland University student Matias Beaudelaire was part of the winning Lisanderian squad.

What about our opponents? Fortunately or not, depending on whether or not you like lengthy pargraphs explaining each team in a small amount of detail, there is only one returning team in our group: Copper Cuprum, the chicken slaughterers. Let's hope they use a rubber one this time. Anyway, last time, they were drawn into Group D and had an excellent to the first day, beating Alenburg 35-12. Too bad they were narrowly defeated by Darmen 21-19 and then defeated a bit more handily by Tolol, 26-17. Luckily for them, the next day went a lot better with a 31-7 trouncing of the United States of Devonta and a 47-7 demolition of Logria to make it through to the Cup stage. Too bad they would go on to lose 21-19 to eventual Maracalo Cup champs Lisander.

Image
Mike Decker, who's rumoured to be retiring from
sevens after this tournament. We'll keep you updated
on whether or not it's true. It'll also be the only
picture here because I can't find any other relevant
ones.
The rest of the teams in our group? They're new to the competition, so we can't exactly talk about what they got up to last time. However, one of them was part of the last Rugby World Cup, so let's talk about them. Aimena were in Group E in their debut competition over in Ko-oren, a relatively easy group with the hosts and Darmen being the only real challenges there. They lost their opener 6-3 against a very defensive Darmeni side before bouncing back with an 18-6 win over the Free Republics and a 13-10 win over Logria to make it to the top of the stage. Then came their bye day, which saw them lose their spot at the top and slide all the way down to third, meaning the next match was do or die if they wanted to make it through to the elimination stage. Sadly, it turned out to be "die" for them as they lost 12-3 to hosts Ko-oren and, as a result, were eliminated at the group stage. Shame really, but it's still an accomplishment to be proud of and it could prove how much of a challenge they'll be. Everyone else? A complete mystery. Khazuul was nice enough to give us a list of who'll be playing for their side but no such luck for Widovia and the United Civil Republic (presumably no relation to Group B's United Civil States), whose players list is a blank.

So who do I think will make it through? As we're ranked first in the world despite our sevens skills being a bit hit and miss lately, I'd imagine we'll go through; as the other ranked team in the group, I'd say that Copper Cuprum might get through, though I won't rule out Aimena being a shock Cup contender. No idea who out of the other three would be Plate contenders, Bowl Contenders or, if this'll be like the last time the AVBF Sevens had thirty teams instead of 24, going out of the tournament early. Maybe Khazuul would be lucky enough to get a Plate spot, if I had to pick, but I wouldn't bet on it.

What about everyone else? Reigning Maracalo Cup champs Lisander are in Group C, alongside the hosts, Geektopia (another team from the last RWC, where they finished with one win, one draw and two losses to finish fourth) and three other nations. In Group B, we've got Hutanjia, the Natanians and Nosts, Greater Vakolicci Haven, Pambudia (who I remember from the last WorldVision Song Contest) and a couple of other teams. Group D has Darmen, Alice Bay and four newcomers. And, finally, Group E (which only exists when we have thirty teams) has Abanhfleft; Terre Septentrionale, a team that comes across as a successor of the Alpine Union even though they're probably their own thing; reigning Olympic Sevens champions Kriegiersien; and three other teams making their debut. Yes, there are a load of newcomers and not a lot of returning faces. We're missing Qasden, Savojarna, Nova Anglicana, Devonta and a whole heap of other well-known faces. Hopefully they'll make a return sometime soon.

Anything else I should bring up? No, not really. Mike Decker's rumoured to retire from playing international sevens with this being his last competition, although since that is just a rumour I'm not going to expand on it any further. Even so, I've no idea on who would replace him if he decides to hang up his boots international-wise and keep it to domestic rugby. Anything else? No, not really. It's been very quiet in the rugby world lately what with the ERC 7s winding down and it being a mostly uneventful but still action-packed tournament, though hopefully this upcoming AVBF Sevens and the ERC season will bring us something to talk about again. I'll stop typing now and get to work on watching some good rugby. Here's hoping you do too.

Bolgano gets an important victory
Bolgano 34-10 Kriegiersein

From the beginning the team managed to make a somewhat unexpected game since this is their first time in the world of Rugby 7s, for the Tiles in the minute 2´ Daniel Holbart made the first Trie in the history of Bolgano moving against the players so impeccable that none managed to touch it while the conversion made it 7-0, but its rivals managed to overcome in the 3´and 4´ minute but failing their conversions so there was still hope for Bolgano.

Lombardi: We play incredibly in the first 2 minutes and now we are losing against this low-level team * he says it very angry *

Coach: You are right I want you to end this game as you do in Bolgano, in your league, in your land, in your people and now when the best of this Nation, right now you will lose?

The players inspired by the words of their captain and their coach went to finish the game achieving a trie at 34 seconds, the fastest in these first games in the AVBF to have a 14-10 advantage while another Trie of the same previous Carl Peters makes another unbelievable move but a player is very strong in his legs and falls and suffers a shoulder injury that is expected to recover in time, people applaud him when he left, not only those of Bolgano but not all the fans of the 30 nations of this tournament that came to support their nation, Albert Donsson entered instead, managed to make another Trie and reached a 28-10 and then captain Lombardi made another play for a final of 34-10 for those of Bolgano

Coach: I am proud of you, I knew that you have a better game than in the first half, we will prepare for the next game.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
National rugby sevens team

This will be the fifth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in AVBF Rugby Sevens, which also happens to be in its fifth edition right now. Rugby sevens is, quite frankly, a fringe sport in the Democratic Republic, with most of its players being either rugby union or rugby league players in their professional careers. However, the country simply couldn't resist the temptation to go for some sporting silverware, and therefore the rugby sevens national team has been assembled and sent to Burgunden in Neu Engollon yet again for yet another shot at glory.

Ouna's Boozy Bar Crawl - 1

Postby Ouna » Sat Aug 31, 2019 9:14 am

Thanks for flying Royal Brazilian Airlines

Lars enters the room of baggage handling carousels, alongside his fellow humungous teammates. He has golden hair and crystal blue eyes. In his pocket a Lonely Multiverse guide to Neu Engollon.

After no delay, as Neu Engollon is renowned for its timeliness, the passengers luggage begins to flow out into the conveyor belt. Numerous bags slide past until finally a pink, fluffy one is collect by Lars.

A voice sniggers behind him, a similarly blonde burly bloke exposits that Lars lost a game of beer pong and as a forfeit had to walk through Burgunden with the pink suitcase.

The team pile into a St James Cabs Minibus headed for their hostel. Lars cracks open a tinny and refreshes himself.

'No time for drinking that African pish here now larsy' a voice behind him cries, 'get your girly lips round this'.
He hands Lars a bottle of 81 Ale.

Lars investigates the bottle, noting the vibrant smell of hops punching out of the open top. He takes a sip and is met with a flavoursome and strong taste unlike any of the cheap lagers found at home in Ouna.

The bus makes its journey into the heart of Burgunden, passing the beautiful banks and breweries which compose the city's skyline. The streets seem quite quiet except for when they finally near Confederacy Park.

Offloading it's stocky, handsome cargo the minibus fizzes off into the streets and the lads begin their epic bar Crawl. Already surprisingly sozzled the 18 stone Bas Boonstra suggest starting off at the Machu Picchu pub situated on the corner of a street next to the square.

Sauntering off and leaving one another they begin a night they will most definitely not remember, and one which will require sweating out on the rugby field the next day.

Terre Septentrionale wins in their Rugby Sevens debut

Burgunden, Neu Engollon - Terre Septentrionale was a little disavantaged with the group draw, being the only unranked team in pot 2, but it didn't discourage the team. The Nordiques are in a tough group, with Abanhfleft who'se good at every sports that exists, Kriegiersien who won the gold in rugby sevens at the latest olympiads, Bolgano who'se quite good too, Riysa which isn't bad either and New Quomir, maybe the weakest team in the group. On day one, Terre Septentrionale played against New Quomir in the morning, and beat them 40-0, and will play against Abanhfleft and Riysa later today.

Terre Septentrionale started off the game with a roar with a try in the first minute when Autumn O'Flynn escaped to the endzone but the team was too ecstasic for scoring their first try in history and celebrated during at least 2 or 3 minutes. The time allocated for converting the try expired and the Reprezentacja Nordycki was leading 5-0. Dustin Donnelly found a breach in New Quomir's defense at the 5 minutes and scored a try, the conversion was made in time and the score was 12-0 Terre Septentrionale. One minute later, Alexandre Mailhot-Chaumont intercepted a pass and flied to the endzone for a try, the conversion was good and it was 19-0 at the halftime.

Terre Septentrionale scored two tries at the 9th and 10th minutes, thanks to Grace MacGuire and Autumn O'Flynn, both conversions were good and the score was 33-0. Then at the 12th minute, Dustin Donnelly picked up a loose ball and passed to Francis McNally who ran all the way to the end zone. The conversion was good at the score was 40-0. This is the final score.

BOXSCORE

1st minute: Try by Autumn O'Flynn (Conversion was not attempted)
5th minute: Try by Dustin Donnelly (Conversion was good)
6th minute: Try by Alexandre Mailhot-Chaumont (Conversion was good)
9th minute: Try by Grace MacGuire (Conversion was good)
10th minute: Try by Autumn O'Flynn (Conversion was good)
12th minute: Try by Francis McNally (Conversion was good)

Abanhfleft and Riysa

Abanhfleft and Riysa are our next two opponents. First we face off against Abanhfleft who doesn't need any presentation. While rugby isn't their favorite sport, they're still good at it, and their 6th place in the rankings can acknowledge. Then in late afternoon we play against Riysa which makes their debut like us. Abanhfleft and Riysa played each other this morning with the Fleftics winning 28-12.

Kriegiersien loses important match
Kriegiersien 10-34 Bolgona

Kriegiersien countered a surprising good start from the clumsy, but effective playing opponent with a fast lead after 4´, but then failed the conversions.
The coach was still pleased:
“Don’t get nervous, you got them, you are better, now ram them into the ground. I bet these chumps don’t even know who we are or how to write our name. Remember our video studies.”

Then Bolgano got any easy grip of the game and won without much resistance from the Kriegiersien team. The neutral crowd from the other nations booed when Carl Peters faked an injury to get attention, but his replacement sealed the deal.

The conversation between the coach and the team from Kriegiersien got a bit rude afterwards.

“You lost against this low-level team that no one has ever heard of? Some indoor footie nation? Are we going to f*** up the group stage again?”

Damian Druid stood up:
“You are right. We let our league, our land, our people down, our whole nation. In the next game I want you to stand up and fight! Riysa will fall! We have all data here to pick them to pieces”

CELEBRATING BEER AND RUGBY YET AGAIN

By Jean Marc Charjan

On the eve of the fifth edition of the Alpen View Brew Festival Rugby Sevens Tournament, we see the Goats once again struggling to be a still dominant team in the greater rugby world. Many have wondered how Neu Engollon can be relevant when they are no longer one of the top ranking rugby nations, the government has restricted mercenary groups from basing themselves in the Confederacy, and that leaves...beer. It’s still one of the top beer producing nations of the world, but how long will that last?

For over a year now, the new management of the union and sevens squads have been trying to groom them into a champion force much like the ones of years past that have won cups upon trophy upon medals. Now, many of the veterans from those days are coaches and managers of today.

Jean Semmes had quite a career starting at Liguria University, then playing six seasons for the San Remo Ospreys, before being traded to R.K. Mhozt'sevhyar i 'yhuug in the Commune. All the while, he put in incredible, countless tries for both the Union and Sevens Neu Engollian national squads. After retiring from the pitch, he was determined to stay involved with the Goats on the sidelines. While several of his also retiring teammates coveted the top job held by legends like Giuseppe Cosento and Rolf Mertzen, it was Semmes who was selected to fill those big shoes.

Jean had a lot of ideas on where the Goats were heading and how he was going to get them there.
On the time it would take to get the team back to the top,
“It might take some more time, but we have a lot of levels of veterans still on the team and we have great players coming in from the top university teams that are top draft picks for the AVRU. I think the learning curve to be on the pitch with teams like the Irises, Elejamie, Abanhfleft and the Spiders won’t be as bad as they’re saying.”
On the lifestyle of rugby in the Confederacy:
“These guys have been on the pitch as soon as they were out of diapers. That’s how Neu Engollians play rugby. For life.”

About having a distinct Sevens squad of players, separate from the Union National team:
"It's a goal we're working towards, but we don't have a strong club or collegiate tradition in sevens, so it's a slow road. We have to keep pulling the same players from the union NT because there's just not a decent pool of sevens players nor players that want to convert strictly to the sevens code. Also, it keeps the union team in shape to keep playing sevens through the union off season, but the trade off is that players tend to burn out quicker due to that constant work ethic. One day, we hope to field both separately distinct Union and Sevens national squads, but we're a ways off."

Carrying on the legacy of great coaching:”I have the utmost respect for both Coach Cosento and Mertzen. They were mentors and like family. I keep in touch with them and when I feel stuck, they help me work through some tough issues with all their experience.”

Coach Semmes was honest about the Goats’ chances for the 5th AVBF:
“Stranger things have happened. I do think it’s worth the effort to at least try to make sure the Maracalo Cup stays in Neu Engollon. It’s been away for way too long now. We’re hungry for it and that might just give us the edge we need.”

I don’t think that just goes for the Goats. The whole country is ready for the Cup to be returned to the Confederacy and stick around for a while. The Goats hit the pitch this week as the epic Brew Fest kicks off this year. Beer will be judged and drank and tries will be scored. Not necessarily in that order.
