The fusion power thread

Postby Neko-koku » Sun Aug 25, 2019 6:08 am

If fusion power can be achieved then we should not have major energy issues. Moreover we are also going to solve the problem of climate change. Without clearing this hurdle there will hardly be hope for an interstellar, let alone an intergalactic civilization. Now our question is...when are we going to get it?

Ask yourself when Dr Dre is releasing Detox and you'll have your answer for this question

Do you know enough about this to know that it's infeasible or you just don't want tech to develop?

Fusion power will probably be ridiculously expensive at first though.

It should definetively be more researched.

Never said it's infeasible. We just won't do it cause many people don't make changes fast enough to prevent catastrophes. Our government has no focus on resource exhaustion and is only just starting to focus ever so superficially on climate change. When the main argument of the next election is "should we have reparations or not," it's clear to me they aren't interested in this issue. I would love to develop fusion power. I'm sure you want to as well. most other people aren't thinking about it though

Yeah but we still need to have it before it is too late. We can't let trads or socialists who want to stop all human progress in favor of distribution win.

Our entire future is at stake here. If we fail to find a new energy source before coal, natural gas and oil run out, we can kiss any chance of ever being this advanced again goodbye unless aliens decide to just randomly give us their tech. Once the fossil fuels are gone, they won't reappear for millions of years and our society will be permanently sent back to at least the 1700s if not way earlier

Climate change can't be tackled through moralism (e.g. reduce the amount of carbon emission). Instead it has to be tackled through carbon removal. People are going to fucking emit. Just remove whatever crap they emitted.

Then this shit has to be tackled now.

Well, ENIAC was built in 1945 and it wasn't till the 80s that personal computers became affordable to the common person. That's nearly 40 years.

That costs a lot of money though and would require either government funding or donations from the public. Because neither group is overall concerned enough about climate change, even this probably won't work. In the end, the short sightedness of the masses may be their downfall. They're like Nero playing his violin while watching rome in flames

Then it's not going to work without...without a global Leviathan. But that is a serious problem in itself. The last thing I will bet on is human cooperation lol.

Can people find a way to commercialize carbon removal or tie it to something fun so that people are willing to participate in it?

Uh..not necessarily. Think about gamification.... OK that's plausible. Many people will do anything for a medal..so..

I know, but even though there will be a delay before it becomes a household item, it is still worth researching.

Research over the decades has yielded naught but bogus experiments and and non-reproducable results, I'm inclined to say cold fusion isn't all that possible.

Except for muon-induced fusion but that doesn't really count since it doesn't generate net energy.

If humanity becomes extinct because we are unable to tackle climate change, then honestly we deserved it.

Fusion has been maintained for some 15 minutes if I remember correctly, the problem with nuclear fusion is that, unlike fission (which by the way gives out less energy) it needs extremely high temperatures to work (nuclear fusion bombs work by detonating a typical fission bomb first). This probably can't be worked around, no matter how you do it, past a certain point atoms repel each other with comparably enormous force, so you need to supply a lot of energy to get them to fuse. So the question is achieving this temperatures while obtaining more energy than the one we are using up, and also finding a way to shield us from the extremely high temperatures (an accident in a nuclear fusion plant would be pretty bad).

Why fusion?
Why not solar panels, wind mills, heat pumps
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pump

Tidal power, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_power
Solar mirror in space. All vehicles will be electric.
