It's ok. The vocals belong in a punk song and don't fit at all. The guitar and drums are kinda good though. Other than vocals its good enough for radio.

I guess it was just time for Sabaton to release their "Bad Album"; that one album every band/artist has that just isn't great. It was inevitable, I suppose, but it still hurts having been so hyped up only to be let down. Usually a Sabaton album consists of half it's songs being great and the other half being good. The Great War was more like three great and the rest "meh". Very disappointing.

Still, I'm fairly confident it's just a fluke. The fact that those three great songs + Bismarck exist proves it isn't a weak album because the band ran out of juice so it's clearly something else at play. Maybe the subject matter? WWI is pretty boring; especially the Western Front, which is what most of the album focuses on.

Hopefully their next album is infinitely better.

I don't think the subject matter is to blame here. WW1 is definitely not a boring subject and there is plenty of material for songs. I think the problem is that Sabaton really did nothing new with this album and played it pretty safe. While I think the songs were fine they were kinda generic and thus kinda meh.

Also I have really been enjoying the band Serenity lately. Anyone know some good bands similar to them?

I don't think it's the subject matter. One of my favorite Sabaton songs is The Price of a Mile which is about WW1. The Cliffs of Gallipolli is great as well. If you changed the lyrics but kept the music and renamed the album to WW2, it would still be just as bad.

Another act that might be up your alley, even though it is more in the post-rock direction, is TV On The Radio.

Maybe it's just me but I find WWI to be rather boring.

The Price of a Mile is okay, but IMO there were several songs on that album that were infinitely better. Cliffs of Gallipolli was also pretty good, but again not one of my favorites.

But yeah, I guess the subject matter doesn't matter that much
