To be quite frank... balls were not my favourite way to pass time, but they were not bad.
The nibbles were good and the drinks cool. Dancing was fun, too, although the classical music they usually played was not entirely my cuppa tea.
Anyway, I am a redhead, with red-brown eyes, an inheritance from my Mother, lean and muscled, not exactly busty, but I had something to work with - not much, but the lads, who could not keep their eyes up, could kiss my arse anyway!
I wore a dress, which was a bit unusual for me, but proper. I was not a girly girl. It was a form-fitting red dress, which emphasized my hair, shoulderless, going down to the ground, the bodice hinting at a cleavage, but not showing much, except, that there was something.
Sunna wore the playful dress, but she was somewhere roaming around the hall with Mother and her Date for tonight, Rainer Kistmacker, our Minister for Health - hardly appropriate for the Herzogin of the Wißenthenland, but Kistmacker was a good man. And his wife couldn't come because she fell ill, so he had asked Mother if they couldn't attend together.
It had actually been quite cute.
Anyway, I stood at the Refreshments Table, waiting for the fun to begin, with a glass of Lemonade in hand. The table also held the nibbles, or at least a part of them (there was a second one on the other side of the Ball Room). The wine would be brought out after the dancing began, as with all alcohol, but... if one needed one, there were ways.
And one way was to have connections.
I saw someone fun-looking approaching, a young woman around my age (I would guess) in a light pink dress, which looked quite hard to move in (then again, who was I to talk?) and she came towards the Refreshments Table as if she was looking for something.
"They'll bring out the wine after the first dance.", I told her with a small, lopsided smile, "Other then that, I would recommend the Onion-Nibbles." I indicated to the small, muffin-like nibbles of flaky pastry, which were filled with a mixture of bacon, onion, cream, egg and caraway and scalloped with cheese. They were quite spicy and delicious. "I'm Rena. Who do I have the pleasure with?"

Jolene Gudfrey in conversation with the von Sykane's
Jolene was indeed satisfied how this early evening is playing out. She was barely here yet she has already received a donation offer for her canine sanctuary, and now a possible business link.
As Teressien was currently an untapped market for her company, and for Port Ember as a whole in fact, thus establishing personal and business links with a major player such as the von Sykane family was indeed worth gold. Both as a figure of speach and now - literally as well.
She responded to Gerulf as soon as he finished speaking, "That math certainly adds up Mr von Sykane.. The trading of raw resources is in fact my company's largest point of wealth. I have a book full of potential clients, willing to pay top money for quality materials, and as such, I am always looking for quality suppliers. If you can provide me with quality, I can ship away your goods faster than you can mine them!"

It seemed Cecelia's earnest attempts to try to cheer Fadia up and make amends for bringing up the subject had backfired terribly. Cecelia tried to conjure up the words to apologize as she could see poor Fadia was distraught. The smile from her own face quickly dropped and all she could do was let go of the Princess's hands and hug her back. Whispering a quick "Sorry!" and gathering her skirts and darting off to a place where she could get over her embarrassment. "Wait, Cecelia!" Benedict called for her but it was too late as she quickly vanished into the crowds. Likely she was looking for the nearest restroom He turned back to Fara. "Hey, I'm sure she meant well. She's got a real big heart on her" he pulled out a handkerchief for Fara to dry her eyes with. "So please don't think poorly of my Ceecee. She thought she could maybe cheer you up a bit."

For a moment Maria was startled when the lady begun to speak to her. Glancing at her for a moment, Maria was interested in her dress. While she understood that most of what people wore to the ball would be seen as in style, for Maria, women’s fashion was still too reveling. Introducing herself as Rena, the Princess still saw the young lady as someone quite pretty, especially since there were few redheads in Rivienland.
“I am Princess Maria of Rivienland,” she said giving a quick curtsy. “And that is a shame.” Grabbing a glass of lemonade, she also picked up an Onion-Nibble and studied it for a moment. Taking it a bite, Maria quickly took a sip of the lemonade, as she disliked anything remotely spicy. “Oh dear, I do not think I like that. Too spicy,” the Princess said as she took another sip of lemonade. Feeling refreshed once again, she continued, “So, are these sort of parties a common occasion in Teressien?”
Prince Philippe
Surveying the ballroom, Philippe found it quite a lovely scene. The music, the décor, and, growing by the minute, the crowd that represented the high society of Teressien. His eyes focused upon his sister as Philippe was surprised to see her already making friends. He was glad as, while Maria was certainly one of his favorite siblings, she was too often isolating herself from others, like mother. Maybe she would not find a husband here, but at least she was out of the chapel.

It also looked a bit as if he was her older brother leading his younger sister to the altar. Or a wedding in general. It also looked adorable.
Alrich was still smiling about the siblings from Rivienland. He would be certain not to miss the opportunity of speaking with the Prince and while he did note, that his sister would not be jumping in joy at his offer, he would make sure, to make the dance worth her time. Who knew, maybe I could get her older brother on the dance floor with me as well?
We'll see.
Anyway, they came before us, bows were exchanged as well as greetings, and Alrich kissed the back of the young woman's hand, as it was proper. The clumsy curtsy was quite adorable, too.
"Enya Findehoof, Your Royal Highness.", I replied to the inquiry, speaking Teressian-accented German, "It is a great honour to meet you, Prince Berengar."

Still, the conversation was starting out well!
"Balls especially?", I asked, "Once or twice every month, someone hosts a ball of varying size. This one is actually one of the larger ones. Soirees are another question, though, especially when this woman is concerned." I motioned a bit down the Refreshments Table towards a woman, a few years older then me, a blonde in a red dress, who was talking to a dark-skinned man, who was giving off the aura of a long-suffering artist. "Wilrun, the Baronin of Port Monee is famous for her soirees. She even coined the term Soireediplomatie with them. The man with her is Khalid Faris, some company heir from Kyrenaia."
I smiled at Maria.
"I'm more of a festival-goer, to be honest, and we have quite a lot of them in summer especially, right about this time, actually.", I told her, "So, if you stay in the country for a few days, we could go to one. Wißenthal, that's a small town in the Wißenthenland, is actually hosting one of those in three days."
If Prince Philippe would look around a bit more, he might find people, who would be interesting.
As a catholic, he might be drawn to a small group of two men and two women, one of which looked a lot like a priest, as well as a dark-skinned man with a red coat and a cross necklace. The women were a very pale blonde in all-black Geansai, her yellow eyes still shining, while the other was a lavender haired woman in a ball gown, which reached down to the floor.
Another priest-looking man was standing with a very tall, dark skinned and blonde woman, conversing amicably near the other Refreshments Table, on the far side of the hall from Maria's.
In general, there were many people, who he could approach, if he wanted - or, alternative, join his sister and her new friend, of course.

Jolene did not truly know much about the Sykane Mining Group, but she was not totally in the dark either. She has read briefly about the company, being in a period of 'stunted growth', if she remembered that report correctly. In the mining vs export world, that was great news for her. As in GREAT news. Why? Because although the mine could possibly produce more products than they currently are, they do not have enough customers to validate such increased production, which tends to frustrate the mine bosses. Now with Jolene's connections, this trend can easily be reversed, making BIG money for both organisations, and win the favour of the owners and shareholders at the same time. A big win for Jolene.

-Oh come on Mom! No! exclaims Anax as he facepalms. You know I've not been doing that since 2013! And before that, I only did twice! Duchess Alvina, please don't believe that part. I've moved past that kind of foolishness, you can believe me."
As he says that, some shouts of approval can be heard in the background.
See? Even my wife and our friends agree, says Anaximander as he moves his smartphone, making appear on Agathe's own a group known to Damir and Aurelia as the Alpha Squadrons, all of them eating sandwichs or drinking.
"My husband is right, he has matured a lot over the years. But as a mother, Agathe always worries a bit too much, but what mother doesn't for her children? asks a young woman dressed similarly to Anax, with the same pistol as him on her right thigh, but with no guitar strapped to her back. As she says that, the Empress Anna Blachkov stands up from the metallic crate she had bern sitting on, and approaches her husband.
"Damir, Aurelia, good to see you again, says Anna to the two Kyrenaians. Herzogin Alvina, pleased to make your acquaintance, she continues with a sincere smile.

"It's no shame," he said. "I have to say, I also recently started to deal with this country. How is Draycora, well, there is much to say, it is a land of the human spirit and the individual. The highest value of ours is liberty. The self-determination and self-responsibility of the individual. In our country, this freedom is expressed through strong art and science."
He thought for a moment.
"To clarify that needs a whole conversation, and I would also like to know a bit about their homeland, which we can do four with a small drink, what do you drink here on a ball? ".

Royal Palace, Citta del Re, Lux Pulchrae
At the Royal Palace it was a regular, especially hot, summer's afternoon. The palace itself was down to skeleton crew's worth of maintenance staff, both in and outside since the only people that actually permanently lived there were the king, Cleone d'Angeli, his parents, staff, and the palace priest. Cleone sat at a bench at one of the estate's many garden. A fountain nearby and bird chirps were about the only noise to be heard, other than approaching footsteps on the marble pathways. Alessandre Giulio Cesare Massimo de Lux Pulchrae, yes the name was quite a mouthful, was on his way to meet Cleone, while being accompanied by a pair of guards.
"Ah, Alessandre, il figlio di Roma, buonasera." he said as he stood up, the guards bowed and promptly left.
"Sua Altezza" Alessandre bowed "You called for me?"
"Yes." Cleone started walking with Alessandre following next to him "There is an event in a rather mild country, Teressien, to which I was invited, but instead I deferred it to you."
"To me? When was this?"
"Yesterday."
"When is it?"
"Next week."
"Next week? You can't just drop me into a random country for an irrelevant event and notify me a week before? We still have to put finishing touches on the mid-year summit at the end of the month."
"Do not worry, it is only a day, maybe two at most. You will miss nothing, because this had everything to do with the summit. It is not just you going, but also Luis de Contanza and Roderique de Marquet. I have cleared all of your schedules."
"What for? A trip with those pagliacci? I don't know, I hardly interact with Roderique."
"This is pivotal. And it remains your priority. Stick to these topics, and the summit won't be so hard on us. Va bene?" he said, handing his advisor a folder.
Alessandre nodded "Tutto bene Sua Altezza" he thought for a second before speaking again "But why there?"
"What's wrong with a nice, all-expenses-paid, trip abroad? This is a high society type deal. Plenty of foreign diplomats, nobility and white gloves to shake hands with. I fully trust in you to do your best for me and the country."
"You're right. And don't worry about a thing, I will have it all under control. Oh, before we part, you wouldn't mind if I brought Constantino? Figured it might be nice he learn a thing or two, maybe meet a few people."
"Well, he's your son, it is not at my discretion that he goes, it's whoever sent that invitation. Now have a good trip, and may it be fruitful Signore Massimo, I expect good news." Cleone extended his right hand, Alessandre then bowed and kissed it, then being relieved and went on his way.
Present
The day came and all involved had arrived after a decent flight, only being a tad late. Among them were Alessandre Giulio Cesare Massimo, a fit, middle-aged nobleman in his early 50s with short, greying brown hair that was swept to the right and a greying beard. He sported a black suit and pants, with a black vest and matching tie. After him was his oldest son, Constantino Innocente, in emulation of his father he wore a similar black attire. He was roughly the same height, maybe an inch taller around 5'10'' and 27 years old. Unlike his father he was clean shaven, and his hair was lighter shade, and also swept to the side.
Next was Luis Antonio Maria de Constanza, the reigning Duke of the Toccamare Province. Compared to his Italic counterparts, he was quite big at 6'3'', almost burly but not so much since his age at 57. He wore a grey suit with matching vest, white shirt and red tie. He had a greying beard that seemed to be catching up with his black hair, which was swept back.
Last was Roderique de Marquet, CEO of Marquet arms, and one of the most prominent of the noble Marquet family. He was about the same height as Constantino, of average build and 38 years old, he wore a black suit with dark grey vest and white shirt.
Before they exited the vehicle and walked up to the entrance, Alessandre gave them a quick warning "Careful men, if you haven't noticed yet, these people are Germanic. So if any of you speak it, speak it now because I sure as hell haven't learned that barbaric tongue. French was the last one." he said with a smile to Roderique.
"Ala merde, Massimo." Roderique shot back
"Should have brought Herr von Blut, or Schweisser or some Alemani." Luis suggested.
"Father, I know a bit, maybe I'll greet them." Constantino answered
"Then by all means boy, take this lead." Alessandre encouraged. Like most nobility, they could all speak multiple languages, those being French, Italian and Spanish, and even English and could understand each other if they kept to their own tongue. However, German being a minuscule language, was usually not bothered with.
They all got out and made their way to the Prince, with Constantino taking the lead addressing the Prince first "Guten Abend, Herr Alrich und Frau Enya." he shook the Prince's hand and kissed the lady's right. "May I present myself, Constantine Innocent Massimo, my father Lord Alessandre, Duke Luis de Constanza and Sir Roderique de Marquet." they all proceeded to follow suit by shaking and kissing hands.

Aceus and Sabin
“<<Sabin, how on earth am I supposed to dance with all these medals jangling about?>>” Came a silver haired young man’s protest, fiddling with the various golden medals present on his uniform. It was a nice, emerald green that brought out his eyes, accented with yellow-gold to shine against his almost silver white hair. Stockily built, though not nearly as muscular as his compatriot who stood a full head taller than him, he was the charming young monarch of Danceria, Aceus Elurion. “<<It’s to get you to be used to the uniform for the Pentennial.>>” his taller companion, one Sabin of Figaro would explain. “<<Quit fiddling with the medals!>>”
“<<You at least get to wear the easier suit.>>” Aceus would roll his eyes and survey the ballroom. He seemed to be attending them more and more, and had only arrived mostly to keep an eye on the young Berengar, who currently escorted his daughter across the dance floor. By no means was he a worrywart, the Prusso-Pole had already been very courteous in asking, and Erika insisted on going on her own...but there was something that held the King’s gaze and his heart.
A woman of short but shimmering gold hair, her ruby eyes slightly touched with tears...near another man. Internally batting aside the twinge of jealousy, he looked to Sabin and nodded. “<<Looks like your intel was good, and they said you couldn’t be a diplomat.>>” Sabin nodded in kind, as the duo entered into the throng itself, “<<You thinkin’ about dragging me over to the Kyrenaians once we’ve paid our dues to the Host?>>”
“<<Only if you don’t mind seeing Aurelia again.>>” Aceus held a small grin as he excused himself while effortlessly navigating the kaleidoscopic crowd. “<<I think she likes you more than she may like Ed.>>” This resulted in a chuckle for both, as they made their way to Fürst und frau “<<We shouldn’t deprive Berengar of his date so easily.>>”
With that, and shortly behind the Pulchreans, the two Dancerians waited patiently to say their “how-do-you-dos” and “thank-you-for-having-us-heres” no doubt doused upon the poor couple at the moment.
Aceus allowed a small smile, he knew what a sore arm after a long successful night of hand-shaking felt like.
Rev. Stavros Galanis
Had it really been that long since he last wore a cassock? As well as a kalimavkion? Even though both headwear and the clerical attire were far from ornamental, and much to his approval was among the most plain looking of attendees present. It was a plain fact at the end of the day he was an aerhandir, or as many Christians may call “Fool-For-Christ”. Cocktail parties and opulent banquets were a far cry from the comfortable pieces of cardboard he had called a bed for the past fifteen years. Still, he cleaned up nicely, though between the tonsure, his age, and how God made him, there wasn’t too much hair to groom or a beard to trim. His admirers practically forced a set of technologically advanced glasses unto him, to alleviate his blindness. While he definitely appreciated the sentiment of seeing colours again, as well as its use in picking people out of a crowd, “firebrand ascetic” and “access to advanced medical technology” didn’t always mix. On the subject of crowds, and the persons therein, it appeared Their Lordships of Elurion seemed to take to the scene like a bird to wing. Sabin, being the more reluctant of fledglings, preferring to keep an eye on Erika Byrnes and a familiar face rather than dive into the ball proper. No doubt under the pretense of Aceus reuniting with the Princess Fara.
A small smile tugged at the elder’s lips, as he spotted Aurelia and Damir. He would speak to them before the time is done, no doubt, but the night was still young. It would be proper to introduce himself to Miss Enya Findehoof and the good Fürst, who hosted the occasion. Afterwards to the “Patriarch” Adil Btryrik, and to fence in riddles and rhetoric as the theologically inclined often would. A prayer to Theotokos to quell his pride, for pride goeth before a fall, and he would ride on the currents of the King’s pride and ambitions, rather than his own. To confound the plans and plots of pagans was a guilty pastime of his.

I laughed at Ruairi's note about me asking him for advice - who was the older one again?
Besides, I was too old for that anyway. And he might also think about settling down.
His question caused Aaltje to smile. "Yep, Wer anderen eine Grube gräbt is another Teressian Movie. Bertram and Isa Kamma were the leads... it's an old one, from the 50s. Still black and white."
She smiled. It was obvious, that it was a favorite of her by the way she smiled.
Then, the jingle of the orchestra interrupted.
Aaltje looked at me. "We said one of the Polkas is ours.", she stated.
"And I stand by my word.", I replied and bowed my head lightly. Then winked at Ruairi. "Though maybe the young gentleman wants dance the Polonaise?"
I knew, that Aaltje would agree, should he ask her.

Vin smiled and wanted to say something, but I was quicker, pointing at him with my thumb: "Oh, I know the feeling! Though, with him, it's not only limited to car manufacturer test sites, but also to film sets." I grinned at Vin's incredulous expression. "To be fair, he is a student of Movie-Directing and aspiring movie critic, so he has an excuse!"
"Sounds better!", Vin said with a grin, then turned back to Shiruko. "Anyway... the GT-123 is a solid choice. 2.6 tons of Grand Tourer Convertible, 5.3 metres long, nearly two wide, with space for four passengers and a 6,600 cc, Twin-Turbo, V-12 engine, which they had to[/i] limit it to 250 km/h - otherwise, you could crack the 300 easily with that thing!" He grinned. "Call the domestic market price around 300,000 NSD and we are about right."
And just then, the orchestra played a small tune, which called to dance and I smiled.
"Well, I hate to break this pleasant conversation up, but I am afraid, that we now have a date with the dance floors, Prince Keoke.", I said to the man with a smile, patting the pocket, where my dance card has disappeared to. Then I offered my arm to him to link, with a grin. "Shall I lead?"
"First one's a Polonaise.", Vin told the ladies and offered his arm Shiruko: "Milady." He smiled at the Princess. "May I ask you for this dance?"
[...]
It took three minutes from the 'jingle' of the orchestra to said orchestra getting on with it and starting to play the music.
It was a Polonaise, which meant, that it was not a dance in the strict sense, but a round dance, that was danced by pairs striding with majestic and graceful steps in a moderate tempo in certain figures over the dance floor.
It's exact origins were unimportant.
Important was the striding, starting with the plié, the light bending of one leg, the other leg then being stretched, two steps following. Although slow by nature, the Polonaise was enriched by the different figures.
The core was the round dance, the Reigen, the pairs assembled behind each other, female partner to the right, male partner to the left, the female partner putting her left onto the right of her partner's, both ramrod straight and head held high. Time to bow to each other would come often enough.
And so, it happened, that Fürst Alrich III. and Miss Enya Findehoof, a.k.a. Miss Enya Cíochach of the Tribe of Navan, led the Reigen of dancers onto the dance floor to the masterful music of the Stadtorchester Zyng (who played Franz Schubert, Polonaise in B flat, D.580).
Which other pairs were on the dance floor? Prince Damir and Princess Aurelia could easily be spotted. Same with Baronin Wilrun and Khalid Faris, Mailo and Isa Gudhamun, Gerulf and Rena von Sykane...
Traditionalists would be scandalized by Erblin Piteog of the Tribe of Wicklow and Sirlám Scriúire of the Tribe of Cork, two men, dancing with each other (Erblin having the make part). His fellow air racer Raidri Leathchúpla of the Tribe of Navan and his girlfriend Kiah Irisleabhar of the Tribe of Waterford were coming quite early in the Reigen, testament to the arrogance of Leathchúpla, which his girlfriend took in stride. Yvain Saighead of the Tribe of Westmeath, SDY's Representative tonight, was teaching his daughter Isla Saighead of the Tribe of Westmeath right there, as one could see at the lip movements of the man.
None of the present spirituality took their dates out for the spin and quite a few people were standing on the sidelines - though, who was amongst them? And who danced with whom?
The lenses of the three photographers of the court, who were present and officially accredited, were cleaned.

I hung my shoulders, accepted the handkerchief.
"Thank you.", I said, carefully dabbed my eyes - I did not wear much makeup, but what little I wore did not need the additional damage. "I saw it in her eyes, that she had the best intent... yet I blew it..."
Well, Fara, can't do anything right, girl, eh?
"I will not hold anything against her. In fact, I don't think I could.", I added, "Please, Benedict-Khan, when you meet up with her, tell her, that I am sorry and that she should not let a woman like me ruin her heart. She will need it."

"Well, I don't know her that good... I mean, it would be a miracle, if she remembered me from the two-and-a-half times we met...", I admitted, "But if you want to go..."
Just then, the jingle sounded out.
I smiled sadly.
"Well, that's the signal for the first dance, a Polonaise.", I said and smiled, "My boyfriend actually wanted to take that one with me before he had to stay in Fortham." I sighed. "If you want, I'll wait here until the dance has finished. You two go and have fun!"
I smiled more confidently: By the next one, I would have someone to dance with and if it was my older sister!

Gerulf von Sykane.
I raised an eyebrow at Jolene's smile and the sparkle in her eyes.
Maybe I had been too forward...
"That is a very proud boast.", I said with caution and carefully, rising up to business-mode, tall and colder then when we were talking about dogs. "However, I would prefer careful consideration and the option for sustainable development over a quick buck."
I let a beat pass.
"I am sure, that you would prefer to carefully consider your options, too, before you move in any direction, wouldn't you, Miss Gudfrey?", I added. "So, while your offer to quickly find a buyer is appreciated, I would much rather throw the net out further, as they say."
And then, the jingle ruined the vibe.
I smiled, suddenly, as Rena looked at me as innocently as she could.
"Now, Miss Gudfrey, I must excuse myself. I promised my wife to dance the Polonaise with her and I am a man of my word.", I said and bowed my head lightly, "I hope, that we can reconvene later?"
