So what do you think is the best fighter jet in the world and why? I think that the American F-22 Raptor is the best since it is very advanced, is a stealth fighter, and armed to the teeth. Sure it is expensive, but I feel that the cost is worth it. While I feel that the F-22 Raptor is the best, I think that other great fighter jets include the:

F-15 Eagle (not a single combat loss)
F-16 Fighting Falcon (advanced and widely exported)
F-35 Lightning II (highly advanced, stealth, versatile, set to be widely exported)
F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet (advanced and highly versatile)
Eurofighter Typhoon (highly advanced)
F-2 Viper Zero (basically an F-16 Fighting Falcon on steroids)

This can be a bit more difficult to answer than simple kill ratios, because fighters can differ based on their role, manufacturer, and the needs of the nation fielding them, as such, what is the best fighter for say the US may not be the best fighter for a nation like Serbia

If you factor in logistics and fighter availability, it would be the F-15 Eagle, in terms of the fighter that is "Best" for a nation who is serious about achieving good air defense at reasonable cost and maintaining it in the long term.

The ideal fighter for the modern era would probably be an updated version of the F-22 Raptor which includes the Battlespace Management and 360 degree view-through-hull capability of the F35 along with probably various other advancements made during that project which are still ongoing.


F-35 is chunky because of the VTOL design and will always have inferior maneuvering compared to a theoretical version of the F-35 not designed for VTOL (the non VTOL versions which exist still have many drawbacks associated with the VTOL design, so there is no version "Not designed for VTOL", just versions which do not feature a VTOL system) ... That being said, the prospect of basing F-35s on small boats that couldn't previously carry fighters (like a Destroyer) is very interesting.

F-35s on a destroyer is never going to happen. If you don't have a ramp then the fuel load VTOL aircraft can carry in a vertical lift off reduces the range to "just enough fuel to land again".

So why not tow a ramp barge behind you in the water? You'd have enough range for reasonable engagements and then a VTOL landing then yeah? You could unlock the ramp in combat and have your full maneuvering if necessary.

This will be controversial, but how about the F/A-18E/F? Itis a good multi-role plane which is well respected by its pilots and is quite rugged. After all, it does opperate from Aircraft Carriers, Road Strips, Regular Runways and more. Also, it is capable of refueling other planes in air. Now, before anyone says that it isn't succesfull because few countries opperate it, that is due to US policy and not capabilities.

The F-22 is basically a twin engines F-35 with vectored thrust. Definitely better at air superiority by less effective as a mult-role fighter.

We definitely need to start production of an F-22B. Basically take the avionics and engines from a F-35 on a F-22 airframe with the thrust vector nozzles on the engines.

Simple the F-22, no contest. The F-35 is basically just a new remade F-22 but with a single engine rather than a twin engine.
