Do we naturally segregate ourselves?

Postby Christian Confederation » Tue Aug 06, 2019 9:37 pm

I'm a sophomore in HS, Literally started back a few days ago. I have noticed that whenever we get to dicide how we group (Lunch, group work, set where you like, Etc.) I've noticed that the white kids sit together, Black kids sit together, tge Latino kids sit together, and the Arab kids sit together. We mix a little but for some reason we always group ourselves like this.

To qwout my lit teacher from Last year-
"I've noticed that y'all seem to segregate yourselves, I don't know if it's like a sub counciance thing or if y'all just like to be around people like you, I don't know but that's interesting to me!"
This also interests me, so NS Gen what is your thoughts on this?

I’d say we do. We sometimes tend to mix with people of the same background and same likes, because they can relate to each other better? (Just a possibility I’m giving out)

For example, I sit with the non-sporty ones at my school. Those who prefer to play online games because I can relate to them better, even though I don’t play their games. They’re more quiet, which I prefer to be, and they don’t play sports, which I can relate to.

If you’re asking about race, often so, but that’s probably because of lingering racist attitudes combined with the different in experiences children of different races have.

I actually don't. I mostly get along with male STEM guys who are mostly white & NE Asian & Indian. Race isn't the factor I care about, STEM is.

Duh. Look around at who you hang out with and who like you to spend your time with. It's most likely people similar to yourself.

This isn't just race, it is also social class, region, religion, and politics.

Cue the people chiming in how their best friend is is the exact opposite of them and checks every mark on the diversity box, but for normal people, I am correct.

And it’s not that we don’t like to sit with people we’re not familiar with. It’s just that we have a tendency where we prefer to associate with people who we know are like us, and not different so as to accidentally cause a ‘debate’ in whatever they’re talking.

When left to their own devices, people naturally gravitate towards people similar to themselves. Oftentimes, this has a racial component, but this is not always the case. Other major categorizations include social class, religion, and regions.

It's more nurture, than nature. It's folly to project things in a society as an inherent "naturalistic" human quality.

Though, I recommend that you look at Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together In The Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations About Race by Beverly Daniel Tatum, it's about the psychology of race, and the op matches its premise.

Human instinct is not woke. I say, yes, we do self-segregate, or at least sometimes we do.

Perhaps, because there are some things or ways that connect the group alone, probably hobby or interest. As far as I know, at least in the schools and college where I went to, people are not really going with people who come from the same region, or having similar ethnic or religion. I've had a friend who comes from the same regency as mine, yet we don't belong to the same group. Interest and hobby seem to be the most probable factors, maybe, but friends in one group don't really always have similar interest, it's just that they are 'clicked'.

Those factors do contribute to who you associate with... in my class, there’s different groups—extrovert girls, introvert girls, sporty boys and non-sporty boys. It’s whoever we tend to gravitate towards more... also how much they come to you.

And extroverted girls are more likely to go out and meet with people...usually other extroverts.
And people who play sports are likely to play sports...with other people who play sports.

This stuff isn't rocket science lol.

Exactly. I’d thought that people would’ve realised whom we connected to the most, and how we do so.

Of course not. People have been doing this for centuries, and sometimes on a larger scale. Why aren’t democrats generally associating with republicans, for example?

No, the fact that you are signing off on an anonymous internet forum and thanking people is amusing.
