Multiple people were killed Saturday in a shooting in El Paso, Texas, the chief of staff to the city's mayor said.
Suspects are in custody, Olivia Zepeda said. It wasn't immediately clear how many people were in custody or how many had been killed or hurt.


not much in the media pipe lines but multiple agencies reported that around 18 people injured from the shooting and multiple businesses near the area as well as a school near by were placed on lock down.


Update: Multiple people are dead and three people are in custody after a shooting Saturday morning at an El Paso, Texas Walmart, according to authorities.
"We're searching multiple scenes, but primarily the Walmart," said Sgt. Enrique Carrillo of the El Paso Police Department, pointing to a nearby mall as another area of focus. "There is not an imminent threat. There is no active shooter currently."
Mayor Dee Margo told CNN three people are in custody, but he did not give a number of victims.
"This is a tragedy we would have never ever thought would happen in El Paso," he said.
The police department tweeted to stay away from the Cielo Vista Mall area. The police also said people should avoid the area from Airway Boulevard to Hawkins Boulevard to north of Interstate 10, near the Walmart.
Multiple videos on social media posted by shoppers have shown people fleeing the nearby mall.

If the possibility of multiple people carrying firearms is supposed to deter and stop single shooters, why does it not apply to multiple shooters especially in a state where everyone theoretically has access to the same firearms? And if the shooters are actually terrorists, rather damning they had access in the first place.

Not really, no. Terrorism- or any other planned and organized attack- is categorically different from a lone nutjob who just wants to be on the news for a while.

GGWAG as a talking point might be used to refer to cases like this. It shouldn't be, because nearly all shooters in things like this are not rational creatures and thus unlikely to be deterred.
GGWAG as a talking point really should only be applied to ODC and sexual crimes, because these are crimes where the deterrent effect actually exists.

And if the shooters are actually terrorists, rather damning they had access in the first place.

Why? We tend to accept that terrorists and organized crime syndicates have an easier time getting illegal guns than your run of the mill nutjob or liquor store robber.

Yes, they do, but it's typically not the sort of store a hardcore gun nut would be shopping at. Maybe running in to make a quick ammo purchase, but their firearms selection is mostly biased pretty strongly towards hunting guns and not the kind of target and self-defense guns your gun nuts tend to like browsing.

Anyways, I'm not 100% opposed to gun control, but let's see how they got their guns before calling for more gun control measures.

While I would love if this was the moment something changed, where society worked together to put an end to gun violence, I highly doubt that'll happen. This will be another massacre that'll quickly be drowned out in the news by a new one. We Aren't even a week past the gilroy shooting and already we got another mass casualty attack. Clearly something is wrong in the United States
