Do Schools Have Liberal Bias?

Postby IMTC » Fri Aug 02, 2019 8:34 am

This is just a thought I’d had for a while now, but when I was in (public) school, we learned about all the dangers of fascism, but never about Communist Russia and China, Stalin, and Marxism, or Venezuela and North Korea’s horrible socialism. I also learned things about how Elijah Cummings (who called his district “drug infested zombies” was the ‘moral of congress’ (what’s that supposed to mean)? I was also taught trump was bad, and several other liberal points. This concerns me since I wasn’t taught about the dangers of communism or the good things about conservatives. It wasn’t until I had a conservative teacher that taught us all of these things that I started to wonder: Are schools biased (in general, to any ideology).

So what do you think NSG? Are schools biased?

My school was very left-wing, but I cannot talk about schools that I've never been to.

Edit: Modern Conservatism isn't that great either though.

Definitely, and I hate it because it has lead the majority of my classmates to be progressives.

I would believe so.

In my history class we learned about Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia and we were told everything bad that the Nazis did but nothing bad that the Soviets did.

Now that you raise this point I'm intrigued to see what other people's experiences are.

I'm not sure how it is in other parts of the United States (such as the Southeast) or other countries, but the schools that I've gone to in California certainly did. It isn't quite the dystopian communist state that you might imagine, but there is a very apparent slant to how students are taught.

It isn't usually the coursework itself that is overly biased (sometimes is) but the teachers seem to insert their opinions into what they teach (and their opinions are often left leaning). A few of my teachers don't seem that biased at all, though.

I can't say if the history classes ignore the Soviet atrocities and just focus on the Nazi ones, because the history classes I've gone to have only focused on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Sure do in liberal areas. Seattle Public Schools curriculum is super biased.

Schools are by and large about at the political spectrum where a school is. And even then generally aren't too far into either side of the political spectrum insofar that individual teachers will have their own biases, but that's not really avoidable nor a problem.

Thinking schools have a liberal bias (or conservative bias) however is generally more of a sign that you're a lot further from centre then you think you are.

The area I’m in yes. Kentucky Public schools in the central parts tend to have a majority of liberal teachers. I’ve had a couple. One said antifa is the best organization on earth and others just tried to “indoctrinate” us.

I would not say that schools have a liberal bias, but instead I would say that they have a leftist bias.
Liberals and leftists are not the same, schools are not liberal, they are leftist.

But they are very different.
Liberals and conservatives are different, but they want to achieve the same things by doing different things.
Leftists have some very different goals than liberals and conservatives, and their way of obtaining them is extremely different.

I don’t think there is a bias. I think this notion stems from conservatives not liking that young people are more progressive or liberal and will soon outvote them. It comes off as looking for a scapegoat

Who doesn't remember their social studies teacher encouraging their students to rise up and seize the means of production? And standing up every morning to sing The Intentionale! Those leftist American schools, man, I have such fond memories of those times.

I mean, i'm not a conservative, but teachers inserting their own opinions into what are supposed to be lessons from a neutral standpoint is kinda inevitable, sadly, whether the bias is conservative or liberal bias.

Yes, they have a liberal bias. Not so much a leftist bias, but a liberal one for sure.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
