Of Desert Lionesses and Sand Raptors (Closed, reboot)

Postby Kyrenaia » Tue Jul 09, 2019 12:50 am

Hello and welcome to the reboot of Of Desert Lionesses and Sand Raptors!
This RP is still closed to me and Scarlet Eagle, but you are very welcome to read along. Have fun!

9th of July, 2018. Utica International Airport.
Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

Oea International was not large enough for their plane, so we had to have them arrive here, at Utica International. After that, a helicopter from the Flight Readiness would take us to Oea.
I sighed.
Well, early July in Utica, Daily Mean of 32.5°C, no rainfall, eleven sunshine hours - Summer in Utica. We were even on break, that meant, that everyone able to would flee the gigantic metropolis as soon as they could. And for me, that meant the Baed Palace in Oea. Family Work Vacation, for the work of a Sultana and her family was never done.
Not that I minded, I loved Oea, but still.
Dad would be there, Grandmother would be there, Uncle Ilia had promised to come over for a day or two, Auntie Rasha, too. And then, there was of course the local Khana and her Princess, a fellow Selkie-Maiden (although 'maiden' was a bit too much in my case, in some senses of the word).
But before I could transfer to Oea, usually I did that by train, a normal seat in a normal carriage, accompanied by my Handmaiden, I would have to receive Anaximander Blachkov, the Emperor of the Empire of the Scarlet Eagle, his wife Anna, a pair of Special Ambassadors and two bodyguards. They were here on a State Visit.
It was no secret, that the Court of the Azure Hall highly officially denied them the honour of being received at Court, something, which Grandmother had no influence over and which was quite a bit of a slight. And with public protests being announced in Utica, it was thought best to simply move the whole procedure to Oea, where the risk of the Imperials dying of heatstroke was less high (and yes, we know, that they were 'Special Forces', but arrogance was a surefire way to die and that would shed a rather bad light upon us as hosts).
So, I stood there, dressed in jeans and a blouse, a fedora on my head, and waited for them. Their plane would land and then taxi over to where I stood - and, by extension, a gangway and the helicopter. I stood in the shadow of the hangar, where their plane would be parked and guarded by the Army, arrangements for the crew included a hotel (middle class, nothing fancy) and a tour bus through Utica, so that they could have the sights and sounds.
No honour guards, no detachments of the armed forces, no carriage ride. Atypical, but if Utica's Court did not want to receive one, one had to accept a few curtailments.
Sarina, my Handmaiden next to me, wore the dress typical for her occupation, including the veil, and had a box of water bottles standing next to her, two of them already in our hands.
She knew, that I was acquainted with the guests and thus, it did not surprise me, when she asked in pitch-perfect High Selkie: "Nervous?", she whispered to me, into my ear. "Don't be. All will be alright."
It was not a friendship yet.
"I hope so.", I whispered back. "Hopefully, they'll see it similarly." I sighed. "Well, they should come into sight any minute now..."
And indeed, their plane, escorted by a pair of fighters from the Armies of the Five Deserts, came into view a minute later, touched down and taxied over to where we were.
"Showtime.", I whispered and put on my best smile as the plane came to a stop, holding onto my hat.
What could possibly go wrong?!

9th of July, Eagle Force One en route to Utica
4 hours before arrival.

Imperial Suite, located at the front of the lower deck of the two decked Boeing 807 Jumbo Jet.

Two months ago, the Imperial Couple, aka Anaximander and Anna, had been invited by Razia Sultana for a state visit to the Sultanate of Kyrenaia. Although the Kyrenaians had imposed strong restrictions on what the Imperials could not bring, such as firearms, the Emperor, out of good will, had chosen to abide by it.
And finally, those two months have passed, although the Emperor, Empress, and their Personal Guards known as the Alpha Squadron, have been very busy, notanly in destroying two bands of dangerous cultists (The Testament of New Ezekiel in Arizona and Eden's Gate in Montana).
This is one of the many things Anaximander has in his mind, as he wakes up, blowing a lock of his long black hair, who reaches just below his shoulder, out his blue eyes, before caressing the ones of his wife, who is currently laying naked on top of him, her head resting peacefully on his torso.
"Wakey wakey, sunshine, and happy anniversary says the Emperor with a smile.
-Mmh, thanks honey, nutdo we really have to? asks Anna as she opens her eyes, before raising her head towards her husband, and exchanging a small kiss with him.
-Unless you want to present yourself like that in front of the Sultana, I'm afraid we'll have to, replies her husband.
-Yeah, speaking about being presentable, look at what I've done, says Anna, as she touches the compress and bandages covering her husband's left eye, testament of a Guard's Punch sparring session between the two just a few days before, that ended with the Empress landing a good punch in her husband's face, giving him a black eye. I didn't need to add this to that, she continues as her finger trails down towards the fresh scar on Anax's left cheek, reminder of a knife blow he took there while fighting Eden's Gate.
-Don't worry about it, replies Anax, you know that gives me more street credibility, he adds with a smirk, causing his wife to snort in laughter.

However, before the two monarchs can continue their discussion, a knock is heard on the door of the Suite.
"Come in! shouts Anaximander.
As he says that, the doors opens, revealing a flight attendant, wearing the dark green Service Uniform of the Imperial Guard, pusing a rolling tray with a breakfast on it: coffee, pastries, bread, butter and jam, etc.
- Your breakfast, your Majesties, says the blonde woman as she pushes the tray near the bed, before making a small bow.
-Thank you Sergeant, replies Anna, as she rises from her husband, you are dismissed."
With that said, the Sergeant gives another bow, before exiting the room, leaving the young couple to enjoy their breakfast in the privacy of the Suite.

Four later, left side of the plane, lower deck, in front of the door
After having enjoyed their breafkast, the Imperial Couple had taken a shower, dressed, and had meet with their colleagues and friends that are accompanying them on this state visit. Together, they had reviewed some diplomatic notes about the manners in the Sultanate, had checked if the attires hey would wear for their introduction in front of the Sultana were clean and well ironed, and even had checked one last time the code names they had given to some important persons they were bound to meet.
  • Sultana Razia, codename "Kingpin"
  • Crown Prince Ilia, codename "Sailor"
  • Princess Rasha, codename "Armor"
  • Prince Damir, codename "GoldenEye"
  • Princess Aurelia, codename "Archer"
  • Grand Vizier Mahmut al-Zahir, codename "Philosopher"
  • Foreign Minister Vizier ben Sahid, codename "Seller"
  • Admiral Shirin Mawja, codename "Wrong Gender"

So, as the plane is beginning his final approach to Utica International Airport, the six Scarlet Americans check one again their clothing.

1) Anaximander and Anna; wearing brown santiag boots, blue jeans, a sand-colored polo shirt bearing their Squadron's new sealOn their heads, black colored Stetsons, with their family crests over the left breast (For Anaximander, an Imperial Scarlet Eagle with two swords in its claws, for Anna, a windmill circled by laurels, with its blades being two crossed axes.) And also, some HUD shades.
On their belts, in black leather sheaths, their Imperial Guards ceremonial daggers, with the handle wrapped in black leather, the pommel bearing the Imperial Scarlet Eagle of the Imperial Guard, holding a crown in his claws. In another sheath, a combat knife. And also a Swiss Army Knife.
Present as well, a first aid kit, bearing their blood type (A negative for Anax, B positive for Anna), containing a combat application tourniquet, two doses of morphine, an Israeli compressive bandage, a black marker pen, some hemostatic powder, and some additional supplies (bandages, tape, etc.)

2) Special Ambassadors, Colonels Pavel and Alicia Morozov: exactly the same attire as their friends, but Pavel is wearing a dark green polo shirt instead of a sand-colored one. Otherwise, it's the same. Also, Pavel's blood type is O negative, while Alicia is AB positive. The coat of arms present on both of their hats is a wolf's head, with a musket and a olive branch crossed behind it.

3) Lieutenant Colonels Yuri and Patricia Petrenko, callsigns Alpha 2-1: they are wearing beige rangers boots, pixellated sand camouflage cargo pants, sand-colored polo shirts, but with a black bulletproof plate carrier in top of it. On their heads, their iconic Imperial Guard black berets, with the Scarlet Ranger insigna, an Imperial Scarlet Eagle with a silver skull in its center. The First Aid kit is strapped to their plate carrier, bearing a A positive for Yuri, and a B negative for Patricia. Also, they are carrying their Imperial Guard straight bladed swords in sheaths strapped across their backs.

Finally, all of them are wearing Data Glove Paired on their left forearms, as well as throat microphones and earpieces.
They are carrying as well bagpacks, containing additional medical supplies (other Israeli compressive bandages, Jesco scissors, a space blanket, additional supplies, and a net stretcher), water and some snacks, as well as two military trunks containing the attire they would change into before meeting the Sultana.

"So guys, asks Pavel as the plane has landed and is currently taxiing towards the assigned hangar, ready to make a good impression?
-Depends if they're nice enough with us, mutters Yuri.
-Oh come one man! exclaims Alicia. Don't be like that! Yes, they may seem lie assholes to us by imposing us all those restrictions, but at least they have the courtesy to have us land away from a possible crowd of protesters, adds the male Colonel. I can't imagine the bad memories it would have brought to Anax.
-True Alicia, very true, replies the Emperor as he rubs his dog tags, where a very small diamond is set, that was made with a part of his father's ashes, who was assassinated in 2010, just a few weeks after his wedding with Anna. Anyway, seems like it's Princess Aurelia that will welcome us, he continues as he looks outside by the portholes. All right people, let's do it!
-Aye aye! shout his wife and his friends in answer, just before the gangway reaches the plane, and a member of the plane's security detail, in Service Uniform and a Magpul ACR strapped across his chest, opens the door and steps outside, standing at parade's rest.
-Well, Colonel, this flight was perfect as always, says Anax as he shakes hands with Colonel Allan Whitehorse, Eagle Force One commander and commanding officer of the Imperial Airlift Group.
-That was my pleasure Your Majesty, replies the white haired man with a smile. Give them your best! he adds, before the groups steps out of the plane, their bagpacks strapped to their backs, while four flight attendants go behind them, carrying the two trunks towards the helicopter.

-Anax and Pavel are wearing this tribal tatoo on their right forearms
-Because Anna, Alicia and Patricia are well endowed, they are wearing bandages on their chests to reduce the size, and flatten it it a bit.
-The Guard's Punch is the martial art taught to the Imperial Guards. In short, it's vey similar to Muay Thai, but was invented in the Empire.

Utica International Airport.
Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

When the plane came to a stop, I calmly finished my bottle of water. I knew, that on the viewing platform, quite a few people were watching and taking photographs - after all, the markings were pretty unique - but there were no protestors present. It was known, that the Sultana would host the Emperor and the Empress of the Empire of the Scarlet Eagle over the next few days and some details of the time table were known, to, but for example details like where the plane would arrive were not public knowledge.
Still... when the door opened, I knew, that we barely dodged several diplomatic incidents. I knew, that Anax and Anna had something against large crowds of protestors, I knew, that they fancied themselves as militarists, I knew, that they would not understand many things about how Kyrenaia worked... still, having a heavily armed soldier open the door was maybe a tad excessive.
Then again, our helicopter was of the Flight Readiness, so who were we to talk?
And then they came out, with their backpacks and other packs and I had to grin: They looked like tourists! Only things missing were the straw sun hats and cameras!
The helicopter crew helped loading up the trunks while I motioned for Sarina to follow me, which she did, seven bottles of water in her arms.
I smiled as I formally and politely bowed my heads.
"Welcome, travelers from distant shores, to Kyrenaia, the Land of the Five Deserts.", I intoned with formality, then motioned for Sarina to step forward, offering the bottles, "Please, accept this gesture of hospitality, the sharing of water, tuqasimiah in our tongue, and show, that you come in peace and friendship."
I rose and grinned.
"That aside, it might be a good idea to drink.", I added.
After all, it was early July. Forecast said, that it would be 46 degrees Celsius today at Midday, zero humidity and not a speck in the sky. And I did not want to see them hospitalized.
I knew, that Special Forces trained to survive for longer stretches of time without hydration, but I also knew, that the Kyrenaian Special Forces hated to call on these skills if not necessary. With bottles literally offered to them by the armload, with me picking a random one, it was not necessary.
And, as they were surely aware, the tuqasimiah was an important gesture of offering hospitality and accepting hospitality. Refusing it, no matter the reasoning... after such a move, it might be better for them to turn around and bugger off.
I grinned.

When they step out of the plane, Anaximander, Anna, Pavel, Alicia, Yuri and Patricia calmly go down the stairs of the gangway, before arriving in front of Princess Aurelia.
"Greetings Princess, says the Emperor as he takes off his shades, revealing his compress and bandages over his left eye, leaving only his right eye uncovered. Thank you for this warm welcome, both literally and figuratively, he adds with a small chuckle.
With that said, he and his colleagues, who had taken off their sunglasses as well, take a bottle of water offered by Sarina with a nod and a "Thank you" in Kyrenaian, before gulping down the thing in one go.
"Aah, says Pavel once they're finished, that feels better.
-Yup, replies Alicia. The tuqasimiah is a good thing. Just a simple gesture like this to show your good intentions.
-Well, given the heat in these lands, it would be unwise to refuse it, adds the Empress with a smile.
-So Princess Aurelia, I hope those past two months have not been as stressfull as busy as they were to us, contines Anax as he turns to Aurelia. I suppose I don't have to reintroduce you my wife, nor to Grand Duke Pavel Morozoc and his wife Alicia, but the two new heads with us today are Baron Yuri Petrenko and his wife Baroness Patricia.
-A pleasure Your Highness " replies Yuri in a very good Kyrenaian, but with an accent still very noticeable, while Patricia says a simple "Nice to meet you." Both of them bow their heads as they say this.
-Not bad, comments the Emperor on his friend's idea to answer in Kyrenaian, getting a wink from the male Petrenko in answer, before turning back to the Princess smaller than him by some inches.
-So Princess, what now? asks Anna. Do we move now or do we have to wait? And what of our luggage, do they take this chopper with us or another one?"
As she asks this, a group of six Imperial Guards from Eagle Force One 's security detail, clad in tactical gear, with helpmets ans shades on their heads, Magpul ACR Assault Rfiles slung across their chest, Camelback backpacks go down the stairs, before exchanging a nod with Yuri and Patricia, and taking positions on each side of the plane, two at the front, two beneath the wings, and two at the rear.

Utica International Airport.
Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

I was not surprised at the expressions of gratitude in Kyrenaian, it was like knowing to say merci when in Nouvelle-Dunkerque or Dankscheen when in Teressien (both places I had already been to, mind you), but that the personal security complement of the Emperor was a Baron and his wife was to be guarded by a Baroness was a bit of an eyebrow-raiser. I still bowed my head to them politely.
I projected Anax's "Not bad." on the Baron's skill in Kyrenaian, which were not not bad, let me put it that way. His accent was almost grotesque, neither here nor there, depending on which variation was supposed to be spoken.
I still replied, in finest Received Pronounciation of English: "The pleasure is all mine, Baron, Baroness.", I spoke, referring to them by their titles and not by their ranks on purpose - and that purpose was not only because I could, for now, feign, that I did not know their ranks. I turned back to Anax and Anna just in time for her question. "A helicopter of the Flight Readiness is ready to transport us to Oea's Baed Palace. Your luggage has already been brought aboard, Anna. Sarina and I will accompany you during the flight."
I nodded into the direction of an approaching towing vehicle.
"Meanwhile, your plane will be brought into a hangar and guarded by the Army. Your people are free to stay in the airport hotel and partake in the cultural program, which is offered to them.", I said and let a beat pass as I turned on my heels and walked towards where the Bijea was waiting, the transport helicopter indeed of the Sultana's Flight Readiness, a machine in a light beige, with the air crew already seated in the cockpit. From the outside, one could not identify the comfortable interior of the helicopter, which was used by members of the government on official business. "Has Mister ben Sahid failed to inform Mister Foxy, I think it was, about that?"
Sarina stayed at my side, silently graceful, her veil still up.

For Anaximander and Anna, it was also clear that Yuri still had some things to learn in spoken Kyrenaian, but in understanding the language, the young Lieutenant Colonel had no problem.
"If you would, Your Highness, says Patricia to the Kyrenaian Princess, we would prefer if you call us by our ranks rather than by our titles. That would be Colonel for Pavel and Alicia, and Lieutenant Ccolonel for my husband and I.
-Concerning the programme available for our plane's crew, continues Anna as she rearranges her black hair in a ponytail, we have been informed of that. Some of them will partake in it, although they will all stay here at the plane 24/7, and six of them will always surround it, like now, she says as she designates the six armed guards. And no, Undersecretary of State Foxter has received the information." finishes the Empress as she crosses her arms, clearly not amused by the joke.

Some of them will partake in it, although they will all stay here at the plane 24/7, and six of them will always surround it, like now, she says as she designates the six armed guards. And no, Undersecretary of State Foxter has received the information." finishes the Empress as she crosses her arms, clearly not amused by the joke.

Utica International Airport.
Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

A lesson, which our guests would very soon learn, was, that their military ranks were far less important around these parts then they presumed. My Grandmother frequently referred to Grand Admiral Admir Safina, who was the Head of the Navy, not as Grand Admiral Safina, but as Mister Safina. They could insist all they wanted, I doubted, that many people would give a damn.
Still... Dad always said, that Diplomacy was the art of Hidden Meanings.
I still nodded, wanted to say something to that effect, when Anna spoke and cleared up the identity of the person I sought for: "Foxter! That's the name!", I said with a grin, "Sorry, the name slipped my mind during the preparations for finals!"
And arguably, Finals were more important then some Undersecretary of State in some foreign country, which I would (most likely) never meet.
If the crew did not want to enjoy Kyrenaian Hospitality, they should suit themselves. No one would break a leg in trying to convince them otherwise. Or about their guards being unnecessary.

Anaximander and company had also heard from the mouth of Thomas Morozov, Pavel's grandfather and former diplomat and ambassador, that diplomacy was the art of Hidden Meanings. Now it was up to them, despite their background being more military-related, to play toe to toe with their hosts.
"You don't have to be sorry, simply repiles Alicia to Aurelia. Education comes always first at that age. And besides, Foxter is rather a discreet type of person, she adds with a similar grin to the Princess
-True, replies Anna with a small chuckle, as well as Patricia.

Meanwhile, their husbands are looking to the KAF-222 Bijea Helicopter that will carry them to Oea.
"So, not a bad chopper at first sight, no? asks the Emperor to his two friends, his arms crossed across his chest.
-Indeed replies Yuri. About as powerful as a UH-60 Black Hawk or a UH-1Y Venom in terms of horsepower for the turboshafts, can carry up to ten passengers, and up to 800 km of range. In short, a possible competitor for our own helicopters on international markets. Although the civilian version is nice enough. But I still clearly prefer the bigger capacity of the new CH-53K King Stallio we just got for the Imperial Executive Squadron.
-Yup, replies Pavel. At least in those ones, you can extend your legs fully, he adds with a chuckle, causing his two companions to laugh as well.
-So guys, what's your verdict? asks Anna from afar
-All good! replies the Emperor with a smile, as he pats the chopper's side. So, ready to go? He asks his wife, before positioning himself at the door and extending his left hand to help his wife clim in the Bijea.
-Indeed, thank you good Sir, replies the Empress before taking Anax's hand and climbing in, but not before giving him a quick peck on the lips. Once the Imperial Couple has seated inside, Pavel and Alicia do the same, while Yuri and Patricia are still standing outside, waiting for Aurelia and her handmaiden to climb.

Utica International Airport.
Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

I smiled as I entered the helicopter after Anax, Anna, Pavel and Alicia, Sarina behind me. We did not need help.
The cabin was spacious enough for eight to ten men, even to extend their legs, provided these men were below 1.85 metres. Considering, that the average height of adult male Kyrenaians was 1.79 metres, that applied for the majority of the Kyrenaians - not to mention the majority of the available manpower for the Army and the Navy.
That aside, the interior of this one was different from the interior of the ones used by the Army or the Navy, mainly because this was a helicopter of the flight readiness.
The seats, two benches along the front and the back of the passenger cabin, were more comfortable, padded ones, there was a beige carpet (which was easy to clean, I would bet) on the floor, the entrance to the cockpit was permanently shut, the space, where machine guns and other equipment for military purpose was stored, was instead used to carry cargo (in this particular case, their trunks and bags and a pair of small bags from Sarina and me).
"Uncle Ilia always says, that you can know the technical specifications of any aircraft by hard as much as you want, unless you know the aircraft, know how it flies and how it moves, none of that knowledge matters.", I told them as I sat down and began to strap myself in.
From the other side, where the other door was open and a man in pilot's uniform stood, I heard an agreeing hum. "And right the Lord-Commander is.", he agreed, then looked into the round. "Alright, I am Lieutenant Shayan Almuruha, your pilot for today. Glad to be of service, Princess." He bowed his head lightly and I returned the gesture. "Strap in and make sure you're secured. We will lift off in three minutes." He nodded and wanted to go, before he stopped and looked at me. "And Princess, please try to keep the excited squeals to a minimum this time."
I blushed and turned my head. "Just because I don't fly helicopters that often..."
The Lieutenant nodded again, this time to Sarina, who nodded in return, and then closed his side's door. His co-pilot ushered the Barons in, then closed that door as well.
Three minutes until take-off - plenty of time to strap in.

Although the Scarlet Americans are all taller than 1.85m, they donn't feel cramped when they enter the Bijea.
"Your Uncle is right Princess, replies Anna. When we started the flying classes of our fighter and helicopter pilots programs, that's when things got real, not with only the theorical part.
-Indeed, replies Yuri as he sits next to the door, his back to the front, and Patricia sitting across him. This chopper is not bad, although it would have been cool if we could have flown the door open, he adds as he straps himself.
-Yeah, but this one was not outfitted for a combat role. And if we would have ended up like in Abbottabad, I would have had to keep you falling again," he adds with a chuckle.
What Anax is talking about is the operation Neptune's Spear, which he and his Squadron lead in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad on May 1st, 2010, and during which one of their two Black Hawk helicopters faced a zone where the air was hotter, leading to the helicopter crashing down because the rotor blades could not generate enough lift.
"That was a real pain in the ass, continues Pavel. I remember the stress that started when heard that from Chalk Two. At least there was no wounded. What do you think of the chances of it happenning today? he asks to his wife.
-Personnally, I don't know, replies Alicia with a pensive look. I don't doubt that the pilots know their job and are among the best in the country, but since we're in a warm climate, there's a small chance.
-Maybe, adds Anax, before leaning in his chair and putting his Stetson over his face, covering his eyes. I'm going to take a small nap until we take off, don't do too much noise.
-Me too, adds the Empress as she leans against her husband's shoulder, causing the latter to pass his arm around her shoulders, as she too closes her eyes.
-Well, seems like keeping up with Her Imperial Majesty's needs takes a lot of energy, whispers Patricia with a small smirk to her husband, Pavel and Alicia, causing them to chuckle a bit, and Anax to give them the finger, before letting his hand drop back on Anna's shoulder.

Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

I was listening into their conversation, glad for a shared topic, flying, at first, but when they began to talk about their weird operations to kill this and that dude... well, I much rather made sure, that I was strapped in correctly. I even found the callsign of the helicopter: Rihlat Alhukuma 12, also known as RA-12.
When they went on to voice suspicions about maybe crashing because some helicopter of their own forces had in a similar environment, I had to snort in amusement. Nappy time, at least until we took off, I used it to grin at the guests.
"Don't worry.", I said, "I made the experience, that a vehicle, be it a motorcycle, a car or a helicopter, specifically designed to deal with a certain environment from scratch always beats one adapted for it." I shrugged. "In any case, you're making your pilot's licenses?"
Just at that moment, the turboshaft above our head came to life, we were about to take off. We only heard a little whirr, the soundproofing almost eliminating the noise completely.

Althoughhm the Bijea's engines coming to life are still pretty audible to the guests ears, it's not enough to wake the Imperial Couple from the slumber they've fallen into, very rapidly we migt have.
"You're right, replies Alicia to Aurelia, although Princess, with your Uncle and Aunt being respectively Head of the Navy and of the Army, I'm sure you know that their budgets are not unlimited, and that having different equipments and vehicles all built from scratch for a variety of environments can't be possible in large quantities. So you have to make concessions on how much you'll spend on them.
-Concerning our pilot's licences, continues Pavel, we are always learning to fly new machines. We, and I mean not just six, but our whole Alpha Squadron as well, started in 2010 shortly after Anax's coronation with our good old F/A 18 Hornets, the main fighter plane in the Imperial Guard Air Force. Then we moved to helicopters, we managed to master the Bell UH-1Y Venom and AH -1Z SuperCobra, and also now the new CH 53K King Stallion. That's especially useful since those two lovebirds, he adds as he jerks his thumb towards Anax and Anna, have chosen the latter to be the new executive transport Helicopter, or Imperial One as we call it.
Other than that, we are currently taking lessons for flying the new F35, notably the B version, the STOVL one. As of now, fifteen of us have completed it, including us six. Since the Imperial Guard is tied both in history and traditions to this day with the Imperial Marine Corps, they usually get the same equipment.
-And you Princess? asks Patricia with a smile. Ever thought of going to say hi to the birds by yourself?"

I smiled - what my conversation partners might not know, was, that the Kyrenaian Armed Forces did not expect to operate in many areas with conditions too drastically different from the Kyrenaian Mainland, with the notable exception of Jalid, but those, who invaded Jalid voluntarily had to blame oneself for finding the diesel in their engines frozen, their troops frozen, their rifles frozen. Especially in winter, you better stayed as far as you could from that place!
In any case, at Patricia's question, I shook my head: "Nah, I'm not looking to be a pilot, neither military nor civilian. I made my Captain's License last summer and am now allowed to command vessels of up to 50 metres. This summer, I want to make my license for motorcycles. Auntie Rasha has a G 20 in the garage for me already, so I am thrilled to learn." I shrugged. "She's a Selkie like me, ya know?"

The fact that the Kyrenaian Armed Forces were not expected to fight away from the Sultanate was known to the Scarlet Americans, so they didn't think too much of it. For them, it was just a different approach to the one they used, where they had equipment that could be adapted to a lot of climates and areas, both because the Empire's territory had it, from the deserts of New Mexico, to the frozen hills of Alaska, but also because they were used to deploy their Armed Forces anywhere in the world.

However, before anyone of the four awake guests can answer to Aurelia, they are interrupted by a voice only belonging to Anax, his face still covered by his Stetson.
"Not bad not bad, commanding vessels that big at your age, says the Emperor before lifting his hat with his left thumb, hs right arm still draped across his wife's shoulder. The planes we had learned to fly when we were your age were maximum twin engines, fifteen meters long. I guess that proves that what they say about you and your love for the sea is true, Princess. I would be curious to exchange with you about that topic, and about flying as well. To see who defends his favourite domain the most, what do you think?
Also, concerning your aunt, could you please clarify in how is she a Selkie? As far as we know from the notes we got, she's the daughter of Dschafar Sultan and Razia Sultana. Or did you just revealed the scandal of the century by mistake?" he asks with a grin, causing his friends to laugh, even Anna who has still her eyes closed.

That discussion would have no point as the orientation of the respective Armed Forces is too different, so end of discussion.
In any case, I smiled at Anax with a small, albeit confused smile: "I did not mean Auntie Rasha, but the motorcycle? A Gabha Motorworks G 20 A? From Áitadagantiarann?" I shrugged. "So, no scandal there... except for the fact, that a Kyrenaian Princess, who swears on Walaea Motorworks Products, gifts her niece with a foreign product as her first racing motorcycle."
I let a beat pass.
"Considering the almost-upheaval that Dad ordering the Aurelia in Caladairgid caused, there might actually be one.", I added, "But, hey, I got a boat out of it, so they can be scandalized as much as they want!"

When Aurelia clears the misconception, the Scarlet Americans can help but chuckle a bit.
"Phew, you got me worried for a moment, replies Anaximander once the laughter has died down. I will be honest, I'll never understand why the general public needs to overreact over such simple matters, whether it's here in the Sultanate or in the United Kingdom. We do not have that mentality in the Empire. I understand that buying abroad may let some people feel unhappy, but to take it to this level...Meh. Just another cultural difference I guess.
Personally, when it comes to motorcycles, I only swear by the one we produce, Harley Davidson, etc, or the Japanese ones.
"Well, anyway, back to the topic of flying versus sailing...?" finishes the Emperor with a questioning look to the Princess, just as his wife who had been squick anpping on his shoulder, opens her eyes and straightens herself in her seat, yawning a little and putting her hand in front of her mouth in doing so.

For a brief moment, I wondered, what people were chatting about in the Empire if not for the newest gossip and scandal, but I dismissed that thought as quickly as it came, for I had more important things to worry about.
Namely...
"Nah.", I said and grinned, "Let's stay on solid ground, where we can better compare experiences, okay? Flying and sailing... well, if a flyer sails, something went wrong and if a sailor flies, things hit the fan." I shook my head. "Let's not go there, believe me. Rather, this Herley Davidsen you mentioned, what sort of motorcycles do they produce?" I grinned even further. "Sports Bikes, Tourers, what sort?"

At Aurelia's answer, everyone can't help but laugh.
"I can't say we disagree with you Princess Aurelia, replies Anna. And it's Harley Davidson, not Herley Davidsen. Try saying that in the Empire and you'll get a lot of glares sending your way. Especially from my husband, considering the company was cretaed thanks partly ro an investment of the Emperor at the time, and that the Imperial family still owns 30 percent of the company's shares.
Anyway, they mostly produce Tourers, declined in differeng models, including sports ones. They even started to create their own all terrain bikes. Basically, they look similar to the tourer models, but with different suspensions and wheels.
-So, Miss Sarina wasn't it? asks Alicia in the meantime to the Handmaiden sitting next to Aurelia. If I remember well, the outfit you're wearing is called an Altanafus min la Shay. Could you tell us more about it, since we did not have much time to research about it before coming here?" asks the female Colonel with a sweet smile.

Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

I nodded along with the explanation, gave a slightly sheepish apology at the correction - I never heard of them, so cut me some slack here - and in the end, smiled slightly.
"So, they make tourers and dirt bikes.", I concluded, "I would love to see, how they compare to Walaea Motorworks' W-52 and the KR-115 from HMW in their respective segments... how do they feel when driven?"

Aboard RA-12.
Sarina Eahira.

Time for a bit of change in perspective, I think, brought about by the Grand Duchess asking me about my dress. The sweet smile was completely lost on me. If sweet smiles or puppy dog eyes could sway me, Aurelia wouldn't have her homework after summer break.
I leaned over and spoke to them in a hushed tone: "Indeed, it is called the Altanafus min la Shay." My pronounciation of the term was cleaner, but it was a solid effort of the Baron. "Or Breath of Nothing in English. I am Sarina Eahira, Personal Handmaiden to Princess Aurelia bint-Damir." I let a few beats pass. In this time, allow me to describe my dress, namely a silken band with a barely noticeable silver thread running through it, running down my neck's right side to my left breast, around my back, to my left breast and up to the right side of my neck, where it met the other end in a knot. In addition to that, I wore a silken skirt, covering the upper half of my upper leg, sandals and a silken veil, which I wore on my head. "The Altanafus min la Shay is the 'uniform', if you want, of Handmaidens and both sign of our duty and our profession. Many variants exist, most famously the Fustan Raqis Alsyf, the Sworddancer's Dress. There should be an image around on the internet, of a young Jida in that dress... anyway, any particular question you have?"

"When you drive one of these babies, replies Anax to Aurelia, it's like paradise, says the Emperor with a look of pure happiness in the eyes. The wind inflating your leather jacket, the noises of your friend's bike engines beside you as you ride at the head of the formation...
-Honey, says Anna to her husband, snapping him out of his reverie, I think the Princess would prefer if you told her concrete details.
-Right, sorry, replies Anaximander with a sheepish smile as he rubs the back of his head, before readjusting a bit the bandages over his left eye. So, the main thing to remember is their stability, thanks to their weight that is a bit heavier than the average tourer bike. The acceleration is pretty good too, at least on the models we have. Personally, I have a Road Glide Special for the road, a Tri Glide Ultra which I use together with Anna, as well as a modified all terrain Street Rod."

"Nice to meet you Miss Eahira, replies Alicia with a nod. Colonel Alicia Morozov, Alpha Squadron Leader of Her Imperial Majesty.
Yes, we've seen the image of her Excellency Tariqa bint-Ilia in Swordancer's Dress when we did some light research about the Sultana and her family.
Concerning the Altafanus, I would like to know if you could tell me the story behind it, of how it was created? And do you Handmaidens have some trouble with masculine gazes wandering too much because of it? "

Aboard RA-12.
Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

I nodded, knowing my tourers as well: Believe it or not, but my decision to take a sports bike did not come out of the blue, much rather, I had made quite a few hours already on bikes, heavy ones and light ones, big ones and small ones... I liked the speed of light sports bikes, their acceleration and the skill required in keeping them under control, but tourers definately had the range and the heavier bikes of that category did have their advantages, but I preferred light and agile.
Who knew, I explained to Anna and Anax, maybe for summer break next year, I would be able to take a bike to Oea instead of the train?
I told them all of this.

Aboard RA-12.
Sarina Eahira.

I bowed my head lightly in respect at the introduction - that was the Grand Duchess, then. Not much grander then any of our Khans, to be honest, but that was not my concern. I also didn't care much for her rank or unit designation, as I could safely claim, that I waited on the General Staff of the Army of the Five Deserts twice a week and those were, well, Generals and Marshals.
Or the Kyrenaian Equivalent of them.
In any case, I smiled as she said, that they did a bit of a check on the Sultana's Family - much to check, that was for certain.
"Let's answer the latter question first, okay?", I said and began: "We have little problems with 'male gazes' when it comes to Kyrenaian men, the odd boy in puberty not counted in. In fact, it is considered as a lack of manners to bother Handmaidens in such a way while we are performing our duties." I let a beat pass. "Foreigners are sometimes rather surprised, but they, too, quickly catch on as to what is permitted in such a situation and what is not. I, personally, never had issues of that kind with foreign dignitaries."
I let a beat pass.
"Now, as to where this style of dress comes from, that is actually a story going way back in time, apparently to mythical and prehistoric times, according to historians. To the Times of Ustura-Sultan, the Mythical Sultan, who's Court is the stuff of legends to this day.", I recounted.

As Aurelia tells everything she has to tell to the Imperial Couple, both of them nod a few times
"Well, that's a good thing to plan, although remember to be careful with the heat during the trip, replies Anna. Although I don't think that would be too different than us when we take a ride in Nevada or Arizona.
-A thing that intrigues me, Princess, continues Anaximander, is that in explaining this to us, you have yet to mention any sort of security detail escorting you. I mean, far from me the idea to criticize the methods of the Tabardariyya and such, but if I remember well, you're the only member of your generation in the lineage of the House of Khond, if I remember the name correctly. And given the fact you had your fare share of problems in the last decade, I would have thought you would have been provided with a bit more guards to escort you. Then again, I'm trying to understand this with how we do it in the Empire, so of course it is a bit of a culture shock."

"I imagine that foreign dignitaries are indeed briefed long enough before coming here, replies Alicia with a smile too. Don't worry, you'll not have any problems from our husbands, they know what would happen to them if they would do such a thing, adds the female Morozov with a wink to her husband Pavel, who can only help but cringe a bit and cover his crotch with his hands.
Now, could you tell us more about this Sultan's Court that's the stuff of legends? asks Alicia as she turns back to Sarina.
-And also, when you're finished, continues Pavel, I would be curious if you could tell us more between the relationship of the Handmaidens and theTabardariyya, how both groups interact with each other, that sort of thing. We read some introductions about te two groups being professionally close to each other, but we have yet to understand it truly."

Aboard RA-12.
Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

I nodded. "Indeed, I am currently the only member of my generation of my House, at least of the direct line. There are a few workarounds.", I said with a small smile, "As for a security detail, I am, whenever I go outside on non-official business, by her."
I motioned to Sarina.
"And that's my security detail.", I added for good measure. "I often have Aldhiyb with me as well. I, quite honestly, do not want more." I shrugged. "Not that my opinion would matter to Captain al-Tabar, but I would like to pretend."
Well, talk about a culture shock: He, a man, who literally surrounded himself with his childhood friends turned elite soldiers, to me, who I literally had a woman with me, who who would depopulate Utica to keep me safe.
While I did not doubt the devotion of the Alphas to Anax, Sarina's bordered on fervor.

Aboard RA-12.
Sarina Eahira.

I smiled.
"The association between the Handmaiden Corps and Order of the Tabardariyya is summed up, at least for me, quite easily: I am Tabardariyya.", I told them, "Fully trained and certified."
That being said, I leaned back and exhaled, using the short moment of pause to remember the stories of the Ustura-Sultan, the Mythical Sultan, or what we did know of him.
"Long, long before the word for Sultan existed, there was a ruler in Almadaldima, the Ancient City, who is known to myth and history as the Ustura-Sultan or as the Sultan-Alsalatin, the Sultan of Sultans.", I told them, "Well over five thousand years ago, Almadaldima was the centre of the world and, according to the List of Rulers, ruled by the mighty King Nudinmud, known today as the Ustura-Sultan, in the 27th century before the Current Era starts."
I let a beat pass.
"To this day, the Ziggurat said to have been built by Nudinmud stands in the Desert, surrounded by its complex, walled off from the city of Almadaldima. It is the last known temple of a deity known as Allat, the Lady. She, as the myth goes, and Nudinmud were a couple, him going on many adventures, which filled his treasury to immeasurable wealth as none of the presents, which he brought back to Her, were to Her liking. But he also aided Her, expelling pests from Her grove of date trees, for example, in one poem.", I told to them, "In the largest of the stories of his exploits, he went to find immortality, now already a century old, so that he could spent time with Allat until Eternity ended. He traveled far and wide and finally reaches a sage, who promises him immortality should he complete his trials. Nudinmud fails repeatedly and, as a broken and disheartened man, returns home to Almadaldima. There, Allat and Sirrush are waiting for him, as his time has come." She let a beat pass. "He accepts his fate, asking for one hour to talk to Allat one last time, which is granted to him. He and Her spent the hour talking, him explaining to Her, why he went on that quest. One hour turns to two, turns to four... and the two rejoin Sirrush, Allat making a request: Instead of taking his spirit to the Underworld, Nudinmud should become a constellation in the stars, so that he could always be with Allat.
Moved by their love, Sirrush grants that wish and Nudinmud departs the world, the stars, which make up his constellation, still visible in the night sky."

When they hear the Princess's reply, Anaximander and Anna can't help but laugh.
"That's a culture shock for sure, replies the Emperor once the laughter as died down. But as long as it works for you, who are we to judge? Besides," he continues as he leans towards Aurelia, whispering, "when you look at Miss Eahira, at first glance she wouldn't seem dangerous, but you can feel the energy and the devotion for you radiating from her."

As Sarina explains the story of the Mythical Sultan to Pavel and Alicia, and Yuri and Patricia as well who are lending an ear too, the four of them nod a few times thoughout the speech.
"Well, that's quite the story of which your country can be proud of, very beautiful, says the Baron Petrenko. So Anax, not jealous that this myth is not as great as the one of your ancestor? asks the Alpha 2 Leader to his friend and boss.
-Yuri, Yuri, answers Anax with a sigh, it would be very childish and stupid to have such a debate among adults like us. Myths like that are not the only thing to consider about a nation.
-True, replies Pavel, but what would you answer if someone at the Baed Palace told that to you? asks the male Morozov.
-Then I would not answer, replies the Emperor. Don't argue with trolls, it means that they win. One of the basic rules of the Internet that also applies in real life. You can bet that I would not sink down to that level. Anyway, that was a pleasant story to hear from you Miss Eahira, continues Anaximander as he nods with respect towards the Handmaiden. Any other juicy bits of Kyrenaian mythology you would have in store for us? he asks with a smile.

Princess Aurelia bint-Damir.

Now, that the conversations were merged, I could not help but see the very, very slim twitch of Sarina's eyebrow before the look of schooled neutrality returned.
I, however, could not help but grin and raise my finger at her.
"Sarina, I must scold you!", I said with a grin, clearly in humour, "You appeared like a troll in front of honoured guests! Take this scolding!"
Sarina bowed her head, both out of custom and to his her own smile better. "My apologies, Princess, it will not happen again. Shall I ask Captain al-Tabar for an appropriate punishment or do you wish to do that yourself?"
"Come to my quarters tonight and we will arrange a good flogging!", I told my Handmaiden, who now didn't even bother to hide her grin. She knew, that I would not bend a hair on her head... unless I misused her as a training dummy for hairstyles, but that was both voluntary and with her consent. I turned to Anax. "Though, I must ask: Would you decline to reply as well, if you asked someone to tell you a story, while you are at the Baed Palace? And they were basically obliging your request?"
