Should the Electoral College be abolished?

Postby Bread Herbert » Wed Jul 24, 2019 10:35 pm

The Electoral college is the system of electing the president of the United States of America.

In my opinion it is very undemocratic. The electoral college has lead to electing a president 4 times without the majority of the voters.
This site also shows how you can win the elections with 22% of the popular vote.
https://www.squarefree.com/2004/11/01/w ... ular-vote/

In my opinion the electoral college should be abolished and replaced by the popular vote the candidate with the most votes win.

NS , what is your opinion?

I’ll say what I said last time:

1. It doesn’t actually give power to small states, rather, a small group of “swing states,” because everyone else is safe red or safe blue bar extraordinary circumstances.
2. It contributes to the 2 party system.
3. It contributes to polarization.
4. Everyone in a state that’s safe for one side or another might as well not vote at all, for all the impact it has.

But at least two people that voted in the poll disagree.

Yes. It’s unfair, creates an oligarchy, and gets in the way of actual democracy by creating where the votes of only a few hundred people decide who will rule over 300 million. There are really no benefits to this system anymore. It creates an easy gateway for corruption, and is just completely unnecessary and is one of the many problems I have with the American political system/process.
This nation is based on (a slightly more extreme version of) my IRL opinions, and I answer issues accordingly.

It’s easier to win votes by being more extreme. The Electoral college makes it much more worth it to be radical than it would otherwise be.

And your opinion?

My opinion is that in the four years since the last election this debate has been done to death so many times that you could make trading cards for all the pro-electoral college and anti-electoral college arguments.

This is legitimately the most veering thing that I’ve read here all day. I remember seeing that stuff everywhere in ads before it just stopped.

The one that has lost the popular vote in every single presidential election of my lifetime, except once.
