Alita: Battle Angel

Has there ever been a Manga movie done well by Hollywood? I feel they should have used a Japanese director.

EDIT: I checked, and no, and god forbid they're shooting Akira, which is upsetting me already.

The Third Man. I mostly like Orson Welles' quote about Swiss democracy and the cuckoo clock.

Got around to watching Spiderman: Far From Home - I think I'm close to full MCU fatigue, however the final takedown fight was pretty damn good.

Kill the Irishman. Tells the true story of Irish mobster Danny Greene. At first I thought car bombs were overused in the film, but it turns out that Danny's feud with the Cleveland Mafia seriously did involve many car bombs.

The Lion King. If you ever wanted the dialog of the Lion King to play over the expressionless faces of realistic looking CGI animals for some reason...

It did prompt me to write this elsewhere:
"The Lion King as told by the naturalist filming a TV special in the pridelands at the time:

"For years it was dismissed as a local legends but recently the particularly odd phenomenon this particular plain experiences has been observed, and now our cameras were lucky enough to capture what has been dubbed the Coronation Ceremony. Every so often, usually coinciding with the birth of a male lion fathered by the leader of the pride, a strange set of behavior manifests in the entire area. All of the animals gather around the pride while a baboon is allowed to groom and present the cub.

There is no clear explanation for this behavior and naturalists have argued back and forth as to what is going on here, but the so-called Coronation Ceremony of the Serengeti has capture the popular imagination."

"Tragedy befalls the pride as the strongest of the lions, the one we've called 'Big Ben' was killed in a stampede and another young cub was separated from the pride."

"As food becomes more scarce after the death of Big Ben, the male lion dubbed Scar began hunting with the hyenas. This is a big change as lions in the area have been hostile to hyenas in the past."

"After years of hunting with hyenas, the females of the pride have finally struck back to re-establish their role as hunters for the pride. During a lightening storm that caused a fire on the plains, the lionesses drove out the hyenas."

"The pride received other good news as the cub that had been separated from the herd returned. Having formed an odd companionship with another oddball pair of a meerkat and a wart hog, the lion had been eating mostly grubs and insects. It's unclear if the lion will have the necessary skills to survive the plains or even if he'll be accepted back into the pride. But with Scar getting injured and falling prey to the hyenas that once hunted for him, Little Ben remains the only male lion left in the pride.""

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

If anything it made me appreciate what animation does by not doing any of it.

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir. Quite an interesting plot which made me feel homesick despite the fact I’m not the main character in the video. Refreshed me for the sake of fun too, and has its fair share of happiness and sadness.

Vice staring Christian Bale. Mediocre story but the actors gave it their all. The music was great, too.

Rewatched Fargo. Seems the TV series is going to have a fourth season with Chris Rock. Should be interesting.

An oddly fitting combination, actually.

The Art of Self Defense, a relatively smug nerd take down of masculinity by making a joke out of people who take martial arts too seriously. The wink was way, way too visible. You go from being on the side of the anti-macho feeling to eventually feeling bad for for the people they're satirizing because it's done so reductively and smugly. I was on board at the beginning but by the end I ended up going, "Jesus christ, I get it..."

Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, the complete antithesis (except for its shared contempt for martial artists, strangely) where Tarantino supposes that the end of the Hollywood era could have been saved by masculinity. It's a bit of a meandering piece that feels like Tarantino's fantasy life rather than a coherent movie with the same kinds of subverted expectations and use of film language to manipulate and the invert the audience's perceptions. Instead it's just a series of vignettes that insists that these people were cool and if we had been more like them and less like those hippies everything would be cooler now. I've liked pretty much every Tarantino movie up to this point with some reservations here and there, but this one...I just don't think it's very good. Which is disappointing because it was the one subject matter I really wanted. Apparently I'm in the minority in this as everyone else seems really taken with it.

Started watching Return of the Jedi as I have only ever seen bits of it before. Gave up on it pretty quickly, it's very dated, too muppety, and is generally just crap.

Also Puss in Boots, which was okay. Humpty Dumpty really reminded me of Nick Kwek form the BBC's Click programme.

Well I think CtoaN's analysis is pretty good with the caveat that I feel it's a film that needs a second viewing because you're kind of looking for a narrative that doesn't really become apparent until the end and I'd rather watch it without looking for the narrative but..

..yeah this seems a movie Tarantino made for himself
..also seemed a bit of an FU to Uma Thurman, I'm not clued into what went on with those two but the two bare feet bits, I'd even argue this is a hyper fantasy about that transposed.
..I suspect there were tons of references to his previous movies I missed
..and references both to 60's LA and film/movies of the time

So I'm on the fence but I suspect it's good material for a film thesis project someday.

EDIT:

Also..

Not super happy with the Bruce Lee caricature, possibly could have been handled differently..
Maybe because of Margot Robbie being in the film but Leo basically ran with his Wolf of Wall Street acting

Peterloo. It was okay. Might have been great if it had just been cut more ruthlessly.

Return of the Jedi is a whole load of meandering, disjointed busywork capped with a pitch-perfect climax that somehow works in spite of the weakness of everything around it.

It's a weird film.
