I hear that many of those who are poor spend a disproportionate amount of income (often unwise amounts) on alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes. And those things are not cheap.

Perhaps they'd see it fit to skip out on a bottle or two in exchange for an experience like this? A lot of them have a lot of hatred towards the system and their overlords. Here's a convenient person to take it out on...

Wow, this is some classist bullshit.

Firstly, people on less than $10 a day can barely afford to eat, let alone buy luxuries or waste money torturing people.

Second, I don't know how expensive you think alcohol is, but skipping a bottle or two does not save $100.

IM has stated before that they grew up rich. I think it’s safe to say that he thinks alcohol costs around $60 a bottle minimum

The current system does fuck over the poor more often than not. So I can see where IM is coming from on that point. However he completely misses the point by assuming that poor people would be distracted by this panam et circuses type shit.

If the poor and working class where that angry they’d direct their anger against the capitalistic system that oppresses them and not some lowlife criminal.

Also rich capitalists could count as overlords.

Fifth, seeking out a person to torture to within an inch of their life is not a desire most people have. And, again, people struggling to eat do not have that kind of money spare.

Gah, I read the title "Torture Museum" and had memories of the museum they have at the Renaissance Festival each year displaying torture devices of the Middle Ages. This "museum" of your imagining is dreadfully dull in comparison. I've been left disappointed, I'll be giving this museum a wretched Yelp! review and returning to my plans to burn the mortal world in revolution.

Not taking exception to the argument that the poor do often get screwed over. But, people can express their anger at the polls, in protests, in petitions, by going out on strike.

Also, while definitely far fewer than there should be (which is a fault of unequal provision of opportunity), there are chance for those born poor to improve their lives for themselves and their families, and/or -- it's not for me, but some want to -- enter politics (when I hear "overlord", I hear "undisputed, unchallengeable leader" -- which we don't have).

But, yeah, there's no need for this torture chamber crap -- and no reason why poor, working class people would be interested in going to it as opposed to pursuing... you know, productive ways of improving their lives.

The torture in that episode was pretty boring, & probably why nobody showed up to the museum. I rate 25% because it would be something like 20-28% with the hundred dollar charge and a good speech about how cruel/evil the mass murderer was. Maybe something like 50-60% if it was free. Probably around 80% if you didn't have to do it for five whole minutes. I would take a go if it was free to pull the lever once.

Open up a new torture museum where all manner of historic tortures are simulated on consciously living hard criminals: electricity, drowning, boiling, impalement, pulling apart, letting your virtual avatar beat them to death defenseless, and make it $25 a go, and I think the business will see more than 80% participation rates.

95. People are cruel and cowardly, as a general rule of thumb. If they're given the opportunity of torturing someone without having to face any negative consequence, they will and they will enjoy it a lot.
