EXALTED
Age of Sorrows

Preface

This is a prequal to my World of Darkness RP and set in the distant past. Before the world became a universe of gothic, Lovecraftian, self horror. It is a world that still holds onto hope and returning to a glorious past. Ever since I launched Masquerade I've wanted to do an Exalted RP and well, here it is, but I came to some issues in how to go about it. How does one check possible excesses? Well why not have players be able to make their characters be Exalted or not, and if they choose the former, why not choose the most flexible kind that also makes each person individually an underdog in terms of raw capability. Promoting players to interact with each other to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

What is Exalted?

Exalted is a world of gritty high fantasy! Mages, supernatural creatures, magitech, the absolute gamut all over the backdrop of endemic warfare, political assassinations, courtly intrigue, social maneuvering, and sheer survival in an increasingly bleak world. Gone is the wonder and hope of the eras prior! Now is a time of survival as warlords wage campaigns across the globe, rulers reign with a just or cruel hand, and evils from beyond the veil grow in power. Will you survive? Possibly. Only time will tell!

You, dear player, will take the role of a character (or more, up to you) starting out in the Imperial City. The capital of the greatest empire of the age, from there you go where you wish, as you scheme, plot, murder, and finagle your way into power; or, simply fight to survive. The metaplot is very flexible and open ended thus player actions do possess a butterfly effect on their surroundings. It is encouraged that players band together for mutual support and safety in this dangerous world. You can be the head of a Minor House in The Realm starting out in your family's residence in the Imperial City; or a nomad wandering the Southern deserts, or perhaps a nomadic warlord? Too a petty king in the Scavenger Lands to the East of the Imperial City visiting to give tribute or diplomacy. The choice is up to you and the world is vast.

What are Exalted?
Exalted are Humans that at some point in their lives gain an Exaltation, Second Breath, A Third Soul. A tiny shard of a God's essence binding to your Upper and Lower Soul (Yin and Yang so to speak. Upper soul is all higher levels of consciousness while the lower is your natural instincts and primal nature) and giving you supernatural power. Your power taking in the form of supernatural abilities that can be expressed in a variety of ways. You, the player, will have the option of being a Terrestrial Exalted, The Dragon-Blooded, Princes of the Earth! Whose power stems from the Five Elemental Dragons and passed down from generation to generation. As such political marriages can be beneficial in the long run in securing alliances for those players who wish to partake in the ever evolving political and statecraft angles of play.

The Titanomachy

Image

In the beginning there was just darkness, nothingness, save for the twisting chaos of the Wyld. Formless energy pulsating and twisting endlessly within the void. From which birthed and lived the Primordials. The first borne of the cosmos and its chaotic energies. Massive incomprehensible beings of what later scholars could guess to be the equivalent of millions of souls. Beings so massive and incomprehensible that it would seem as if every organ and part of them bore its own personality, intellect, and soul that formed a larger consciousness. You had, Malfeas, King of the Primordials; Cecelyne, the Endless Desert; Cytherea, Mother of Creation; The Dragon's Shadow (In Age of Sorrows as the Ebon Dragon, Lord of Treachery); He-Who-Bleeds-The-Unknown-Word and later known as Elloge the Lord of Speech; The Lidless Eye (later known as Sachaverell, He Who Sees The Shape and Things to Come); Hegra, The Typhoon of Nightmares; Isodoros, the Black Goat whose Tusks twist the Sky; Kimbery, the Ocean that marched against the Flame; Metagaos, the Unwilted Petals of the Thousand Toothed Blossom; Oramus, The Dragon Outside the World; She Who Lives in Her Name; Szoreny, The Silver Forest; Gaia, The World; and, Autochthon, the Builder and Artificer. Each of these Primordials hosting their own complete sub-types capable of manifesting semi-independently and working autonomously, sometimes even against each other.

Together they formed Creation, also known as the world, out of the Wyld's raw essence. Establishing the Five Pillars of Reality to bind it together. Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Wood. The Primordials then went about creating the Gods and all the creatures in it. Ordering the Gods to watch over and govern Creation. The number of Gods being vast in number. From massively powerful Gods such as the Unconquered Sun and Luna to Gods of streams and forests to currency and minerals. However, the Primordials were complacent in their dominion, preferring to stay in Yu-Shan, also known as the Heavenly City. A realm that perfectly follows the contours of the Blessed Isle on Creation except as one giant beautiful city. Finding it more to their liking so sit and play the Game of Divinity. Unaware and uncaring in their actions and their decisions in regards to the sentient races on Creation.

Eventually, the Unconquered Sun led a rebellion. But the God's could not harm the Primordials, for the latter engineered the Gods to be unable to directly harm them, and thus the Gods created the Exalted. Humans blessed with a shard of a patron God embedded in their souls. Allowing them to channel a fraction of that Gods power and thus the Unconquered Sun, with the guaranteed neutrality of Gaia and Autochthon, opened the Gates of Yu-Shan. Allowing the armies of Exalted humans to assail the Heavenly City and slaughter the Primordials. The Primordials slain became the Neverborn and confined to the newly created Underworld. The other Primordials were sealed within the body of Malfeas, he himself turned inside out and made into his own prison as a perverse decision by the Gods, these Primordials became the Yozis. The Demon-Gods and home to their own Demonic Realm that was and is made up of Malfeas own body. However, in a last act of revenge the Neverborn and Yozis Cursed the Exalted so that they would be susceptible to Hubris and Madness.

Thus began the First Age.

The First Age

Stretching from the Primordial War that saw the slaying and imprisonment of the Primordials along with the ascension of the Gods into the thrones of Yu-Shan up till the Great Contagion and the End of the Solar Deliberative. It was a time of endless wonders as the Solar Exalted, put in charge of the world as Demigods and Generals beyond measure ruled all of Creation in the name of the Gods. It was at this time the Shogunate stretched across the Realm as a united Kingdom of all Mankind and countless Supernatural creatures. Overseen by the Solar Deliberative and guided by the Sidereal's overseeing the Loom of Fate. It was an age of incalculable progress leading to the rapid expansion of beautiful cities, longevity increasing exponentially, and the mastery of the very elements. Academic and Scientific progress exploded across Creation as technology and magic blended together to form constructs, weather controlling machines, geomantic defense systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced airships.

However, this glorious era was not to last. Just as the Primordials neglected their own Creation so too did the Gods in time. Leading to the Solar Exalted exercising more and more power until they effectively fancied themselves as the true Gods. Becoming cruel and full of hubris in turn. Seeing the imminent danger of this the Sidereal Exalted conspired with the Terrestrial Exalted. The Terrestrials, the only Exalted capable of passing their Exaltation via reproduction, and vastly outnumbering all of the other Exalts yet individually weaker in raw power, rose up with the backing of the Sidereals to storm the Solar's palaces. Murdering them all in a bloody purge and driving the Lunar's, who were the Solar's confidants and bodyguards, to the four corners of the world. This was known as the Usurpation. Yet, this was a time ripe for revenge. For as the Solar's perished under the blades of the Terrestrials thirteen of them were caught by the Neverborn and became the Deathlords. The Ghost-Kings of the Underworld and horrible twisted dark versions of their former selves. Unleashing them upon the world along with unleashing the Great Contagion, concocted by the Yozis, and with the aid of the Fair Folk who found the stable existence of Creation and affront to the natural order of the universe assailed the entire world. Untold millions perished and war ravaged entire continents. The Fair Folk and Great Contagion along with the armies of the Deathlords eventually preparing to strike at the Blessed Isle and Yu-Shan itself.

Yet, a group of Terrestrials fought their way through the magical defenses of the Imperial Manse on the Blessed Isle with the sole survivor activating the Geomantic Defense Grid and thus destroying most of the Fair Folk and Deathlord armies. Banishing the latter back to the Underworld and the former being driven to the fringes of Creation. This sole surviving Terrestrial crowned herself the Scarlet Empress and proclaimed the dominion that would become known as The Realm. Informally, known as the Scarlet Empire.

The glory of the First Age passed.

The Second Age, The Age of Sorrows

The Second Age starts in Realm Year 1 with the coronation of the Scarlet Empress and the foundation of The Realm. Claiming the entirety of Creation (effectively the Old Shogunate) under its purview. Yet, with the damage wrought in the aftermath of the ending of the First Age it could only establish effective control over the Blessed Isle. Even with the passage of centuries it only has managed to secure several tributary states and mainland territories. While all around various new kingdoms arose from the ashes. The Second Age, however, is an era that pales in comparison to the First Age in terms of technology and wonder. While the ruins of the First Age dot the landscape many of the ancient machinery, spells, and artifacts of that era were destroyed or damaged beyond the ability of the current civilizations to fix. Yet, civilization carried on for the next 763 years when the Scarlet Empress disappeared. Throwing the greatest empire in Creation into turmoil and upsetting the balance of power the world over.

The Terrestrial Exalted and The Realm

The Dragon-Blooded or also known as the Princes of the Earth. They are the most numerous, if weakest in individual raw power (though that's always relative), of the Exalted. They are also the only Exalted that can pass on their Exaltation via bloodline. Even so much as two powerful Terrestrials conceiving a child that would be stronger than their parents individually. As such political marriages and selective eugenics are relatively tolerated in Imperial society. However, all children of known Dragon-Blooded are treated as they are exalted until they hit puberty (when their Exaltation typically manifests) and they either do so or are treated as second class, failures, outcasts, or patricians depending on which House you are referring too.

The Dragon-Blooded's powers are based off the elements with each Terrestrial specializing in one but able to learn smaller amounts of other forms. Allowing truly interesting elemental combinations that provide immense tactical flexibility. Additionally, their powers are channeled and focused through their own martial arts that is passed down throughout the Houses. As such while the other Exalted may have more raw power they are often bested by sheer combat skill from the Dragon-Blooded.

Breakdown of Other Exalted types you may encounter:
Boasting the most raw power of the Exalted and blessed by the Unconquered Sun. They are organized into five castes that collectively made up the Solar Deliberative:
Dawn: were the generals and warriors of the Exalted. They can channel Essence into their anima to appear more terrifying.
Zenith: The Zenith caste are the priests and leaders of the Exalted. In the time of the Solar Deliberative, the Zenith caste were the priest-kings of Creation. Zenith castes can channel their Essence to banish darkness and permanently terminate the undead.
Twilight: The Twilight caste are sorcerers, scholars and savants. They can channel their Essence for damage resistance.
Night: The Night caste are the assassins and spies of the Solars; in the First Age they were the secret and public police. They can channel their Essence for concealment of their anima.
Eclipse: The Eclipse caste are the diplomats of the Solars. They can channel Essence to sanctify oaths, invoking a curse on oathbreakers. In addition, Eclipse Castes can learn any Charm/spell, regardless of source.

Savage and warlike, once the spouses and bodyguards of the Solar Exalted, the Champions of the Moon God Luna.
Full Moon: Fighters and War-machines among the Lunars.
Changing Moon, a merging of three older castes: Waxing Moon, Half Moon, and Waning Moon
No Moon, are casteless.

Champions of the Five Maidens and whom operate the Loom of Fate in Yu-Shan. They are broken into two political camps based on their feelings on the whole murder of the Solars at the end of the First Age. The Gold who supported the Solars and found the Usurpation distasteful and the Bronze who were for the Usurpation. The Sidereals are further broken down into the Fivescore Fellowship:
Chosen of Journeys: Who travel throughout Creation and oversee transportation and movement.
Chosen of Serenity: Who oversee life, and matters related to joy and pleasure.
Chosen of Battles: Who focus on combat, conflict and war, serving as military advisors and elite spies.
Chosen of Secrets: Who focus on arcana and lore.
Chosen of Endings: Who specialize in death and change, whether mortal, Exalted or society.

Also known as Deathknights. The Abyssal Exalted are the champions of the Deathlords and their Neverborn masters. Being the twisted mirror images of the Solar Exalted.

An Exalted that has perished and got devoured, and regurgitated, by a Demon or Yozi in the afterlife. They are often twisted mockeries of their former selves.

Autochthons own Exalted and embodiment of alchemy, science, and blending of sorcery with technology. They are broken up into five specialties that are named after the five magical substances found in Creation.
Orichalcum: Like the Solar Exalted, the Orichalcum caste alchemical are the leaders and high-level functionaries of the Alchemicals. They are created primarily to coordinate and advise at the highest levels.
Moonsilver: The Moonsilver caste of Alchemicals are spies and assassins, exploiting the protean nature of their patron material to hide, sneak and strike.
Starmetal: Generally the rarest of the Alchemical Exalted due to the paucity of Starmetal, this caste are noted as explorers, engineers, innovators and other forms of intellectual.
Jade: The Jade caste are the castes most directly involved with Autochthonia's burgeoning population. They are directly associated with inspiring, managing and leading the masses of Autochthonia in production.
Soulsteel: The Soulsteel Alchemicals are the dreaded internal police, torturers and enforcers of Autochthon. Grim watchmen, they are feared by everyone in Autochthonia, including themselves.

The most peculiar type of Exalted in that they experienced their exaltation in a moment between living and dying. As such they are often ghost-hunters, witch-finders, and their powers usually deal with exorcism.

On Magic, Essence, and Motes

Essence is the pool of mana you can use to cast charms, spells, and wield your elemental powers. It is drawn from the energies of your Exaltation, that mystical third part of your soul added by a God. Charms are passive abilities that you can innately use and cost the least amount of Essence to use compared to spells or advanced elemental abilities. While, Spells are ones you verbally or physically cast (using glyphs, scrolls, and drawn diagrams), which always have a danger of backfiring or being turned back on you by opponent magic users. Your Elemental powers are the most scalable with the lowest costing little to no Essence while the higher tiers naturally take more. Essence it typically used in actions mechanically termed as Motes. Your character is capped by how many Motes can be cast per day and thus preventing magic users from just spamming constantly. So high end magic users will have more room to make mistakes but still must think tactically in the usage of their essence. Using up all their essence yields exhaustion as your character physically and mentally since you are in effect overstressing your very soul. Charms will fail, Spells will do nothing or backfire, and your Elemental powers will progressively diminish to a shadow of their former selves. To remedy this one must relax, sleep, or engage in non-essence using activities for a minimum of 24 Hour ICs. At which point your essence will be fully recharged. But not before 24 hours since your last cast and you've had down time.

Charms
Innate manifestations such as defensive wards, soothing an NPC, conversing with animals, or used in some way or another to enhance your character's passive actions. Measured from Essence 1 to 9 and dictates how much Essence they use per day. So if you cast a defensive Ward that will last for a few days and costs 7 essence to successfully block the attacks you expect then you'll automatically be down 7 essence per diem. Charms may also be stacked and used in conjunction with any other form of magic. Allowing a quite impressive display of combinations and allow homebrewing of magical abilities. Failed charm casting does not take up a mote but still uses essence.

Spells
Spells are the opposite in charms in that you must verbally, draw diagrams, or use symbols to cast. Being active in their effects such as controlling an animal actively, shapeshifting, using spells that are outside of your normal repertoire (say your focus is Water but you're using a Fire spell from a scroll) that you cannot elementally cast innately. Spells use more amounts of Essence with the minimum being 5 and scaling up to 100 points of Essence. Each attempt at casting a spell (even if it fails) still takes up one mote and essence.

Elemental Casting
Your primary and secondary foci. The innate powers of the Dragon-Blooded via the Five Elemental Dragons. The Elemental magic is broken down into tiers. Tier 1-3 are free of mote usage at adept level and above, but still use essence, and use one essence per cast/action and cost five if you chain them into a more complex move (such as punches and spin kicking in one post). Tier 1 is for example propelling yourself faster in water by several kilometers per hour, using air pressure to boost yourself up several more feet in a high jump, launching a small fire ball, or raising a small earth wall to shield your body for example. Tier 2 is basically enhanced versions of tier 1 by a factor of four. Water may propel themselves through and on top of water to an appreciable speed capable of catching most maritime craft, air may levitate and glide extended distances with nothing to aid them, fire may manipulate small too medium flames already present in their environment (candle flame to braziers), and earth propelling stones as weapons. Tier 3 takes things a step further whereby Water may for example breathe for short periods of time (hour or so) under the waves, launch water as a weapon; Air may funnel gusts of wind up to knock down opponents and fly short distances (>100 miles); fire can generate palm sized flames via hands and feet (usually via punching and kicking); while earth may tunnel underground for short periods of time rapidly. Tier 4 costs 10 essence points, 20 if chained, and one mote (no mote if Expert), water may be frozen and used as ice weapons/projectiles, Air may fly hundreds of miles in a day, Fire may manifest it freely and use streams of fire, and Earth can wield flurries of stone and earth freely in offensive and defensive use. Tier 5 costs twenty-five essence to cast and costs three motes (one mote if Master and free chaining) and enhances upon tier 4. Generating truly deadly and effective chain/combo usage by Masters of a particular element. Tier 6 is unable to be used unless a Master and costs two motes unless a Grandmaster (at which point it is free of motes) with each cast costing 50 essence for a master with free chaining. Tier 6 yields truly awe inspiring displays of elemental mastery, whether that is summoning a tidal wave, spawning a thunderstorm several miles across with hurricane winds, generating lightning and hellfire, or summoning an elemental spirit. Tier 7 is reserved for Grandmasters and the true pinnacles of Elemental mastery. Walls of water, fire, earth, and wielding destructing lightning storms. Tier 7 costs 25 essence and 1 mote to cast unless chained in which case it is three motes and 75 essence.

But what about Wood? Wood uses the same Tier, essence, and mote scales to the letter. But specializes in Life, Death, and the Senses. Wood focus may commune with spirits and ghosts on lower tiers. Heal grievous wounds in Tiers 3-5 and animate artificial constructs made out of organic/earthly materials (Golems or even Necromancy should you walk a darker path). Higher 6 and 7 tiers may see prolonged life, supernaturally quick senses, and the ability to return plants and animals to life (but not sentients). As such many Immaculate Monks tending to the poor, sickly, and downtrodden walk the path of the Wood focus. While many darker sorcerers use it in their infernal Necromancy to raise zombies, ghouls, and heinous spirits from the Underworld.

The Realm

https://imgur.com/Iewr6IO
Map is LOL huge and accordingly I couldn't find a site that would hold a 24.5mb file. I encourage people to either maximize resolution, zoom in, or download it and open it. That usually does the trick for me.

The Realm, informally known as the Scarlet Empire, is the largest and most powerful nation in all of Creation. Stretching across the entirety of the Blessed Isle and possessing numerous tributary states, colonies, and annexed mainland provinces. It is a realm ruled and dominated by the Terrestrial Exalted, the Princes of the Earth, and organized in a feudal manner with a strict social hierarchy. The Scarlet Empress sitting at the top, whom deliberately designed the Imperial Government to not be able to function without her, followed by the Terrestrials, Patricians, and Commoners. The Terrestrial Exalted who at least number 10,000 strong in the Realm alone (though it is actually much higher) are organized into the Scarlet Dynasty (broken up into 11 Great Houses that all vie for power) and Outcasts (those born not of a known blood line but often adopted for political reasons and known as Lost Eggs). The Terrestrials are in many ways an over caste that has rights beyond that of the wealthy Patricians. Terrestrials hold many of the most powerful positions in government and have extra-judicial social privileges. The honor heavy society of the Realm has seen quite a few instances of Patricians, even, being summarily executed by a Terrestrial for some act deemed dishonorable. Beneath these classes are Slaves with the practice being fully legal and widespread throughout the Imperial territories and in most nations beyond.

Then there is the Immaculate Philosophy which preaches a reincarnative belief system that places the Dragon-Blooded at the top of the social order. Organized and legitimized as a state religion and Government organ in the form of the Immaculate Order. Whose monks travel across the Realm and its empire abroad.

The Realm thematically is a mesh of Rome, Sengoku Japan, China, and Persia. The provinces are known as Satrapies, the Imperial Military fields Legions and Auxiliary troops, the garb is reminiscent of Imperial China, and the aesthetics of soldiers resembles that of Samurai, Han China, and Rome depending where you are. The Imperial City itself is an eclectic mixture of Han Chinese, Sengoku Japan, Roman, and Persian architectural designs all blended together. Alongside more fantastical buildings made out of supernatural glass and other materials. It is also the largest city in the world with over two million inhabitants as of 763 RY and boasting the largest gathering of wealth since the First Age. It is also home to the large Imperial Manse which was the residence of the Scarlet Empress before her disappearance. For she was only allowed to enter it and from there she could control the magical defenses of the realm located therein.

The Economy
The Realm uses Jade as its standard for currency, maintaining an artificial shortage of Jade to control prices. In addition to Jade, the Realm also uses Jade Scrip as a form of fiat currency. The physical currency is organized by color of the Jade. White being the most valuable and followed by based ten subdivisions in order of Red, Blue, Black, and Brown. The coins getting progressively smaller as one moves down the colors as well. While green notes (Scrip) is used along with Green Jade bars as forms of currency.

The Government of the Empire is currently headed by a weak Regent, Tepet Fokuf, and basically a non-entity by the present year of 770 RY. Seven years after the disappearance of the Scarlet Empress and the central government is already cracking. For it was never designed to operate without her presence. It is nonetheless subdivided as follows:

The Deliberative
Created as a place for the Empress to deposit noisy malcontents, the Deliberative is a legislative body designed primarily as a rubber stamp for imperial proclamations. On the few occasions where the Deliberative has shown independence, the Empress has promptly reengineered it (up to and including dissolving the Deliberative and executing all of its members) to rectify that flaw. Since the Empress' disappearance, the Deliberative has been working on its own, while its power may be entirely a fiction, it is real in the absence of an Empress to contradict it. Being composed largely of members of the Great Houses, the Deliberative has primarily been robbing the Realm blind to arm the various houses.

The Immaculate Order
The Immaculate Order, run by the Mouth of Peace, oversees the spiritual needs of the populace and also engages in charitable actions to keep the Realm together.

The Thousand Scales
The Thousand Scales is the bureaucratic engine of the Realm. It builds roads, handles taxes and the like. Since the Empress' disappearance, the budget of the Thousand Scales has been gutted as more and more of the budget is pressed into the Dynastic stipend. Bal Keraz, the head of the Imperial Treasury is losing hair and sleep over steep cuts due in the immediate future.

The Imperial Legions
The original military of the Realm, the Legions and Imperial Navy, have been dissolved and reconstituted under the various great houses. Originally, the Realm maintained a large number of Legions under the control of the Empress. Each of these legions were named after a shade of red, with the most notorious being the Vermillion Legion.

The Great Houses
While not technically part of the government, the Great Houses are engines of power unto their own right, with agents in the bureaucracy, military and so on. The Houses are currently engaged in a complex game in all the other parts of the Realm's government in preparation for an upcoming civil war for supremacy. Already the Great Houses have begun forming their own power blocs to fight for the vacant Scarlet Throne. Below is a breakdown of the Great Houses and their focuses in parenthesis.

Throne Contenders
House Mnemon (Earth): Desires the Scarlet Throne, with many members already serving as provincial satraps, extracting much wealth in tribute. It lacks the militarism of other houses but its leader, Mnemon herself, is one of the most power magic oriented Dragon-Blooded currently living.

House Peleps (Water): With a reputation of being astute Admirals too fearsome corsairs, the members of House Peleps want the throne but lack the armies to do so. Despite controlling a sizable portion of the Imperial Navy via members in high positions among the Admiralty. In recent decades they are known for increasingly taking dominion of the smaller islands off the coasts of the Blessed Isles while raiding the mainland for sailors, slaves, and plunder. Possess the largest private fleet in the world.

House Tepet (Air): Desperately wants the throne but lost much of their army in the recent past due to an infamous Lunar warlord called the Bull of the North. The current Imperial Regent, Tepet Fokuf, is a further embarrassment to the House with many of it members driven to berserk rage at the constant needling of the other nobility in this regard.

House V'neef (Wood): Runs the Realm's Merchant Marine Defense Forces (Coast Guard and Troops). It wishes to have the throne but its leaders have proven indecisive while its subject feudal dominions are frequently throwing off their yoke temporarily and thus threatening their stability. They are allied with House Cathak.

Throne Supporters
House Cathak (Fire): Wants to be the power behind the Scarlet Throne and has one of the strongest land armies in the empire. Allied with House V'neef.

House Sesus (Fire): Has developed an infamous reputation for its private legions requisitioning food from civilians by force. Wishes to breakaway the entire South-Eastern quarter of the Blessed Isle into their own private Kingdom.

House Ledaal (Air): Staunch defenders of the Immaculate Philosophy and wishes to have the entire Southern Half of the Blessed Isle along with any mainland dominions in the South under their exclusive control. Prepared to rebel against the throne if this right is not given.

House Ragara (Earth): Bankers, Loan Creditors, and merchants the world over. Does not want the throne but wishes to maneuver the Realms finances in such a way to have the empire financially bound to them.

House Nellens (No Specific Focus): Quite the legislatively vocal House in the Deliberative and well known for speaking out for the rights of Non-Exalted. Also known for their insane business diversity and arguably there is not an industry devoid of House Nellen's coin involved. Tends to politically ally with House Ledaal since it is militarily weak compared to other Houses.

House Cynis (Wood): Drugs, Prostitution, Gambling, Slave trading, Sanctioned Murder. Organized crime is the domain of House Cynis and generally tolerated so long as their clandestine businesses do not hurt the Realm or cause too much problems. Well known in extracting sizable tributes from poorer provinces under threat of any unpaid taxes being collected by kidnapping the prettiest boys and girls for the slave markets.

Neutral Houses
House Vai (Fire): A newly raised Great House, only gaining this status in the last 50 years and ostensibly neutral. Its former head the Lord Kalibron Sun-Shen Vai, married to a scion of House Mnemon, was assassinated with his wife by unknown assailants in 769 RY. Leaving the Great House in the hands of his eldest daughter.

Disgraced House

House Iselsi (Water): A fallen House, fragmented and disgraced by the Scarlet Empress centuries prior. A barely surviving house known for its courtiers and assassins. Closely allied with the missionary apparatus of the Immaculate Order.

The Present

The Realm is fracturing after the vanishing of the Scarlet Empress. Tepet Fokuf, is a weak spined bureaucrat and more or less turning into a rubber stamp for the Great Houses and their machinations. Geographically more and more Imperial Prefectures (Imperial Government run satrapies) have come partly or totally under the control of the Houses (both Great and Minor) while the tributary states, protectorates, and colonies on the mainland show increasing independence or forming breakaway states. Many only nominally accepting Imperial rule and paying their taxes only when an Imperial Fleet or Legion rolls through. Meanwhile, across the Inland Sea, the City-State of Lookshy, having remained independent from the Scarlet Empire since the fall of the Old Shogunate, and the chief polity belonging to the Confederation of Rivers gains in power. Possessing the second most number of Dragon-Blooded, at least 3,000; and possessing a wealth of First Age technology. The Confederation comprising the major cities of Lookshy, Nexus, Sijan, and Great Forks along with many other smaller polities controls the Yanaze River (the major East-West flowing river) and its many tributaries. The Imperial Navy increasingly unable to keep the parity of power needed to keep the river trade routes open to distant Vaneha and Rathess.

Too the South the Tributary Kingdoms of An Teng and the Southern Coast from Kirighast to Paragon show signs of independence or autonomy. Even going so far as to withhold taxes destined for the Imperial City. While to the far North the cities of Whitehall, Pneuma, Fortitude, and the territory of Meno are hard pressed to hold the barbarians and northern tribes at bay.

Allegiance: House Vai
Biography: The third child of Lord Kalibron Sun-Shen Vai and his fourth wife: Vastyana of Chiaroscuro. Behind her elder brothers Aanyas Sun-Shen Vai and Kalibron Sun-Shen Vai II. Lord Kalibron and Vastyana themselves being direct descendants of the Scarlet Empress from ancestors born six hundred years prior. The young Zara went through the intensive and often lethal upbringing of a child too the Dragon-Blooded Dynasts of The Realm. However, she managed to survive despite some close calls and Exalted at the age of twelve. Earlier than her older brothers who exalted in their mid to late teens. Seeing the potential she was, at the age of 13, sent to the Heptagram to study Sorcery, Divination, Demonology, and in the vast libraries therein. For that Isle, guarded by demons, spirits, and monsters so only those accepted by its mysterious professors may be allowed entry (and the waters and rocks around the isle littered with boats and bones of those who tried to break in) to the single greatest repository of arcane knowledge in all of Creation with only the Engineers of Lookshy possessing as much First Age knowledge. There she lived at the school until graduation at the age of nineteen with few periods of breaks to return home or the family's residence in the Imperial City. On graduation she was sent to another academy. The Bells, the prestigious military academy of the empire whom normally takes students at the age of fifteen but through political favors was allowed a place due to her father's machinations. The Bells itself was a brutal institution and failure meant being banned from holding any military command or even entrance into the Legions as a regular recruit. For the Bells only took the best and generated the finest strategists in the empire, accepting only five students a semester. Graduating at the age of twenty-one from two brutal years to learn officership and military tactics. Something her older brothers balked at since Aanyas had entered The Bells at the age of fifteen and frowned upon her abridged curriculum while Kalibron II loathed at being sent to the Cloister of Wisdoms (The Religious School run by the Immaculate Order) to be trained as a Monk. Something Kalibron II hated but was never expected to succeed his father nor particularly skilled in politics or warfare.

However, Aanyas was killed in a duel by her adoptive older cousin Yang and Lord Kalibron chose Zara to be his successor. The proclamation of this at the ancestral family home in the shadow of the Imperial Mountain put Kalibron II in a rage. Leading to a four hour long shouting match between the two and the second child to leave the manor abruptly. Later, to be found out that he had joined the Imperial Navy and became involved in a skirmish with the Lookshy Fleet. Where he was presumed lost at sea as his vessel was sunk and his body never recovered. Thus did Zara become the sole surviving child of Lord Kalibron at the time of his murder by unknown assailants while in the Imperial Garden District with his third and fourth wives. All three dying of mysterious assassins that seemed to come out of nowhere before vanishing rapidly in alleyways despite close pursuit of Legionnaires.

Now the young Zara is the head of a Great House and has sent letters out to her various relatives both by blood and adoption. House Vai needs them and by their honor they should return. Even lifting the banishment on members such as Yang. Allowing them to set foot in The Realm once more.

Currently, Zara is dealing with the assassination of her parents, the increasingly dangerous situation in the Imperial City and the prospect of a Civil War erupting between the Contenders to the Scarlet Throne and their supporters. Something that would tear the empire apart. All the while dealing with the aggressive suitors seeing to possess her hand in marriage or at the very least produce a child.
Starting Equipment:
-Red and Black Jade Suit of Armor
-Red Starsteel sword with Orichalcum and Moonsilver runes. Named Starflame.
-Warstrider named Tyr

Tag. I only know Exalted from binge-reading the TV Tropes page once or twice, do I have enough knowledge to participate meaningfully?

On another note, it's my understanding that lengthy and flowery names are somewhat common? I have a particularly good one in mind.

So what's the story behind the Legions being dissolved? Did that occur recently? Also, are all Exalted meant to be immortal, or is that only the most powerful? I'm considering an Exalted who is enslaved to a major house but also raised by them, but being immortal wouldn't really fit.

The Legions still exist just increasingly weakened as the Great and Minor Houses withdraw their members (depriving them of Exalted) and the quotas of soldiers they gave to the central government to staff them. The Central Government in the Imperial City lacks the control to centrally conscript/recruit across the realm. Sort of a like a Crisis of the Third Century or Warring States issue whereby generals and nobles basically cut up the military for their own ends.

Exalted are not immortal though their lifespans are extended and sorcery or pacts with supernatural beings can slow aging and increase their lifespans. Exalted souls do reincarnate though, they just do not remember their past life at all, and the timeframe from when they died to being reborn as a baby is unclear. It could be 1 year after you die or a 1000 before you're reborn. If there is an exact reason the Gods aren't giving the answers on that one.

The type of Exalted also dictates lifespan too. Dragon-Blooded usually have a natural lifespan of about 150-200 years. While Solars have been known to live to 2,000 before they got ganked.

So you could have a character that was enslaved, however, once they Exalt they'd be probably adopted by the House that owns them as a member (Dynast) and used to further the Houses own agenda.

Gotcha, thanks. Finally, are there any ethnic distinctions I should be aware of, or is all kind of willy-nilly?

Yes, but its not truly critical in the Realm.

The Blessed Isle itself (being 3000x2000 miles in size) is host to a variety of ethnic groups. Many of those in the Central, Western, and Northern satrapies of the Island look Caucasian or at least sharper facial features. While those to the East and South would appear more Asiatic. The Islands to the West the people would appear as Polynesian or Caucasian depending where in those utterly massive and complex island chains you are. On the Mainland to the North the people are basically Scandinavian, Germanic, Uralic archetypes. To the East is mostly a mixture of European and Asiatic (due to Shogunate and Realm mixing) and thus you get a whole cultural eclectic mix with each city being pretty unique in appearance and customs. Indeed further beyond the coastlines and rivers into the heart of the Scavenger Lands you'll see barbarians tribes with even more wonky appearances and genetic mutations (which are usually magical in origin) like purple or blue hair, bright orange eyes, or blends of animal and human. Even further in the vast endless forests and jungles to the Far East you'll have Slavic archetypes.

To the Southern coastlines and deserts you'll have Iranian, Egyptian, and Arabic archetypes slowly blending into Berber and then African archetypes.

However, since the Imperial City is so cosmopolitan within its walls you'll see most ethnicities and it wont be deemed out of the ordinary.

NationStates Name:
Basic Info:
Given Name: Zaim Benboulaid
Surname/House: Ledaal
House Symbol/Sigil: (if applicable)
Age: 36
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 185 lbs.
Body Build: A bit on the lanky side, but still well-muscled
Eye Color: Brown
Image:
Image

Description: Zaim has myriad tribal scars running the length of his forearms, dating from early childhood. The ring and pinky fingers on his left hand are shortened a knuckle, courtesy of an unfortunate axe-stroke from his Legion days. His nose remains ever-so-slightly crooked, having healed well but not completely from a youthful fight.
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Exalted: Yes
Occupation: Soldier/commander/bodyguard for House Ledaal
Allegiance: Nominally House Ledaal, but increasingly, no one at all

Biography:
Zaim was born in the coastal city of Paragon and raised primarily in the Rif, that semi-arid land of sharp ridges and canyons that forms the boundary between the Burning Sands and the greener coastal region. His parents were of the clan of Benboulaid, one of the dominant families of the Rif with a strong martial tradition. Since the days of his great-grandfather, the Benboulaids had owed vassalage and allegiance to House Ledaal, and many of his relatives had served in the dynasts' personal guard, or in Legion units under their control.

When Zaim came of age, he was deposited in the lists of the Vermillion Legion, which at the time was recruiting from the south. He was beat to a pulp in their brutal training camps, but ultimately survived the ordeal, emerging at the age of nineteen as a newly minted Vermillion Legionary. At this point his Exalted status was discovered, having emerged later than normal, but it was too late to change course, as the legion had already marched off to fight in the far east.

In the East, Zaim emerged as a capable, and then excellent soldier. The Vermillion Legion was put to work in the region around Rathess, putting down myriad tribal rebellions and bringing new groups into the imperial fold, campaign by bloody campaign. Zaim served in a light infantry regiment known as the Infernal Column, an infamous unit in an already infamous legion. Fighting alongside men of every imaginable background, he became highly skilled with bow and blade, and gradually learned to control and focus his Exalted powers. He also doubled as a spy for the Ledaal, providing detailed reports on the status of the east, assassinating their enemies, and recruiting certain legionaries to the house's banner. Though greatly chagrined at having to work as a Ledaal lackey, the threat to his family's safety always encouraged him to follow their orders, no matter how unsavory.

After over a decade of campaigning, the eastern wars ground to a halt with the disappearance of the Empress. The Vermillion Legion was recalled from the frontier, and Zaim received an honorable discharge at the rank of Captain. This occurred against his will, as he knew his life of servitude to the Ledaal was only just beginning, but he had no choice in the matter.

The Ledaal, impressed with his capabilities, attempted to bring Zaim in publicly as a Dynast, so he could take his place willingly as an important cog in their operations. However, he was uncooperative, so the Ledaal made him a "Dynast" after considerable torture and an unfortunate hunting accident which took the life of his brother. He was made to understand that he had better accept the position, or further unfortunate accidents might occur, and who knows if other family members could be in the vicinity. Zaim accepted the position.

So though officially a Dynast of the Ledaal, in reality Zaim is a closely-watched Janissary-slave, behold to the Ledaals for as long as they wish. He trains their children with blade and bow, commands their troops, and does whatever is required of him, although he is forever seeking a way out.

[b]Ming-Ru: A finely bred charger direct from the stables of House Ledaal. In Zaim's possession since his discharge from the Legions.

Sleza Vesna: Roughly translates as 'spring of tears' in one of the eastern tribal tongues. An immaculately crafted katana with a blade of watered steel, a hilt of ivory and a small emerald set into the pommel. Zaim took it from the corpse of a rebel chieftain in the forests of the far east.

Recurve Bow: A well-crafted recurve bow in good condition.

Armor: A well-made set of scale-mail armor, which includes a cuirass, gauntlets, and greaves. The scale-mail affords him a decent level of protection while allowing for a high degree of mobility. Also includes a round cavalry shield and helm crafted in the traditional manner of the Rif peoples.

Saddlebags:
5 days' field rations (includes dried fruits and jerky)
x3 rolls of bandages
x1 gallon of water
x1 bedroll
x1 canteen
x3 small knives, used variously for skinning and hunting game, or alley fights
x30 arrows
x40 jade coins (red)

The name I was thinking of was "Swift Young Bull Who Treads On The Necks Of His Enemies". Would that be an appropriate name for a Terrestrial Dynast? The name would be somewhat presumptive in-universe, and Swift Young Bull himself would both fail and succeed at living up to his name in a variety of ways.

@Rodez, I’ll be finishing the OP today which will detail the magic system and explain the essence-mote system. Otherwise looks good so far.

@Utceforp, that name works. Especially if he’s initially a foreigner to the Blessed Isle or from an ethnic group not native to it either. So he could have hat name and probably a second Imperialized name given to him (similar to how immigrants and slaves were often given names in their new nation or masters tongue).

@everyone, will be also adding a Current situation section detailing the territorial state of the Realm will be updated regularly as the RP progresses to help simulate events.

In all reality, this Man with No Name Has one…

Xao-Long Yang of House Vai was born to a pair of Adulterous Lovers, his mother and father casting him out as a bastard only to be taken up as a charge by the Uncle of the current Heir to House Vai. In his early life he was like many of his youth..that is to say he was a hellraiser. Exaulting early in his pre-teens he found a love for combat and nature, an interesting combination that meant he spent large portions of his time out hunting, tracking, and generally experiencing the world from a viewpoint that many didn’t. Around his 12th birthday he was gifted a relic, an old Firewand who’s designed dated to the first Era. The Weapon was not functioning but the young Xao-Long loved to play with it and learned it quickly. After months of saving up his own jade, he was able to eventually get a Atificier to repair it in working order, and he found that it was a weapon of interesting use.

Around his 14th birthday he found himself in a feud with a much older cousin of his who, knowing that that young scion would not likely survive a duel of the blades, assumed he would be the victor...and so on that fateful day, the two walked in to the small arena were they were to do battle to the death for their honor.

The older man threw Yang a short sword and in a rather cheap move, rushed the lad. To this man’s misfortune, Yang drew his fire wand, cocked the hammer and fired. The challenger fell with a thud, a hole in his forehead were the jade projectile cut a neat and clean hole through. Holstering the weapon, Yang looked around and saw the mood change and realized that the people were not too likely to take a liking to his dishonorable form of combat. The Official story is that he was awarded his life, though was exiled for his dishonorable actions.

In reality he bent down, looted the man’s ring, and escaped the city soon after, using his knowledge of the undercity it self and a few favours owed to him to escape to the mainland.
He spent the following years wandering the Great Burning Sands, learning to survive without aids or servants and learned to shrug off the decadent lifestyle of his former peers.

Eventually, after nearly 15 years of being a Nomad, he would notice a strange letter appearing in his saddle bag, one that, upon being read, would start him down a hell of a path.

Starting Equipment:
"Lucile" - a Weathered Firewand of the first era, No one besides Yang and a few Acificars actually knows how it works. It fires jade bullets and emits a large blue flame when it does, as opposed to the red-orange of more common firesalts. Single Action, 6 shots, the weapon is old and weathered yet strong and sturdy. blued nearly to black with dark wooden grip and features a engraved image of a serpent that snakes it's way around the barrel.
"Firelance" - a Single shot, muzzle loading rifle that uses more common Firesalts poured down the barrel and fires a single large jade bullet. The Long barrel and hefty powder load means that the weapon picks a hefty punch, able to shatter Jade plate with ease and remain accurate out to several hundred yards.
"Sword" - A rather standard steel sword resembling a short saber.
"Gypsy" - A desert bred horse, captured as a young wild Mare and broke by Yang more so out of necessity then anything else. Fitted with a leather saddle and saddle bag.
"Donkey" - A hardy Mule, a bit long in the tooth but still strong and sturdy as ever. He is more often then not tied to the ass of Gypsy and loaded with his extra gear.
Gypsy's Saddle bags -
x5 lbs of Preserved Jerky
x2 gallon of clean water
x1 canteen
x1 bedroll
x35 Imperial Jade coins
x4 loaded cylinders for his Firewand
x10 Jade bullets for his Fire Lance

x5 more Gallons of clean water
x1 tent

Yang's Personal belongings

my app is up, also clarified the last section labeled Magic which is purely for non-exalted.

So if you're playing as a Dragon-Blooded don't bother with that section. It's purely for Non-Exalted to get some magical abilities.

Given Name: Zaim Benboulaid
Surname/House: Ledaal
House Symbol/Sigil: (if applicable)
Age: 36
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 185 lbs.
Body Build: A bit on the lanky side, but still well-muscled
Eye Color: Brown
Image:

I don't think non-Terrestrial Exalted are available to RP as.

Also, Imp, the description of the Abyssal Exalted is an exact copy of the Sidereal Exalted. Is that intentional?
