Bill Clinton Sworn In For Second Term as President of the USA

Bill Clinton has just been sworn in for his second term as President of the United States of America.

The first American president to be sworn in after the Cold War, being sworn in in 1993, Clinton oversaw the transition of the USSR from a one-party Marxist-Leninist state to a decentralized federal semi-presidential republic. He also saw the expansions of NATO after the fall of both the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain.

Cliton has already served to be a good president during his first term, including overseeing the expansion of the Internet, which is expected to make its way to the USSR in the coming months. Clinton is expected to keep up these regards, and keep his good reputation steady.

Gorbachev, Shevardnadze, Ter-Petrosyan Lay Foundations for New Pact
Tbilisi, Georgia

Presidents Gorbachev, Shevardnadze, and Ter-Petrosyan, leaders of the USSR, Georgia, and Armenia respectively, have met in the Georgian city of Tbilisi to discuss the foundations for a possible new military alliance.

While originally seen as an unlikely alliance seeing that Armenia and Georgia were both breakaway states from the Soviet Union in the wake of the New Union Treaty, the current presence of an anti-Soviet, anti-Armenian, and anti-Georgian government in the Islamic Republic of Iran has forced the three powers into forming a mutual defense pact.

The foundation of this "Common Security Agreement," as coined by Ter-Petrosyan, was met with condemnation by Iran and Pakistan, who have said that the USSR is only increasing pro-western influence within the regions of the Near and Middle East.

The United States, on the contrary, praised the agreement, with President Clinton saying that "no country should feel threatened from a foreign power on its doorstep."

Bombing in Minsk; 15 dead, 36 injured, 19 missing
Minsk, Belarusian Soviet Republic

Bombs ripped through a peaceful day in Minsk today, killing 15, injuring 36, and leaving 19 missing.

A fundamentalist radical Islamic terror group known as "Al-Qaeda," a splinter of the Afghan Mujahideen, claimed responsibility for the attacks. It is not known if this claim is legitimate or not, but a suspect has been apprehended and he reportedly said "Allahu ackbar," God is the greatest in Arabic, to one of the officers arresting him.

Soviet police are currently pursuing a full investigation. Other countries have sent their condolences, from the US to China.

This is the second deadliest terror attack in Russian history, after a detonation of a bomb on a Soviet plane in 1990 that killed 81, and the deadliest terror attack in Belarus. President Gorbachev has condemned the attacks, stating that "we will not rest until these cowards are hunted down and destroyed".

U.S. President Clinton Denies Having Affair

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman," says American President Bill Clinton this morning during a press conference.

The President has been reportedly engaging in a sexual affair with Ms. Monika Lewinsky while currently married to his wife, Mrs. Hillary Clinton. Despite evidence proving the affair was indeed happening since 1995, the President has vehemently denied the affair. Mrs. Lewinsky has also denied having an affair with the President. While no concrete evidence has come out at the moment, many both in the U.S. and abroad have reported that they believe that the two have been having an affair.

First Lady Clinton has been supportive of her husband throughout the scandal, to the despise of some. An interview with her is planned tomorrow on the American news network NBC.

Massacre in Likošane and Ćirez
Likošane and Ćirez, FR Yugoslavia

The Serbian Special Police has killed 42 people; 16 KLA members and 26 Kosovar Albanian civilians, in the state of Kosovo in Serbia.

The massacre was reportedly an anti-terrorist measure against the KLA, who attacked the Serbian Special Police a few days earlier. The massacre outraged the Republic of Albania, the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the United States, and the USSR, who have declared the "anti-terrorist action" an official massacre. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has, again, defended its action, saying it was an anti-terrorist action. With the death of 26 Kosovar Albanian citizens, however, some countries have called it a terrorist action.

The KLA and the military of the FR Yugoslavia have begun fighting, and some powers have dubbed this the "Kosovo" or "Kosovar" war. Forces from the UN have reportedly moved in to try and contain the situation, but after Bosnia, many doubt the UN resolve.

Emperor Nicholas II and Family Buried

80 years after their execution at the hands of the Bolsheviks, Emperor Nicholas II, last Emperor of Russia, and his family were buried today in Leningrad, formerly St. Petersburg, former capital of the Russian Empire.

Emperor Nicholas II and his family were killed by the Red Army in 1918 at the beginning of the Russian Civil War. Being blamed for all of Russia's shortcomings following WW1, including Brest-Litovsk, he was hated by a majority of Russian people, including even some members of the White Army and his own government. Being deposed in 1917, he went into voluntary exile within the newly formed Russian Republic in 1917.

He is both remembered with reverence and scorn by the Russian people; while revered by Monarchist and monarchist parties, he is remembered as being both an oppressor and an incompetent leader. He has been interred in St. Catherine's Chapel, where he shall be buried. He was also recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church as a Martyred Saint, and has been canonized.

Euro Currency Established

A pan-European currency has been established throughout all countries in the "Eurozone."

Called the Euro, the bills come in notes of 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, and 500. Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain have already adopted the Euro as their national currency, and more countries are expected to follow, primarily the United Kingdom, even though they have their own relatively powerful currency.

Some countries have protested against the adoption of the Euro, but most countries have perceived it positively. Most countries of the European Union have also adopted the Euro currency, and are also working to create a common European market.

NATO Bombs FR Yugoslavia

As the Kosovo War heats up, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has ordered a bombing of the nation, including Belgrade.

The number of dead is currently unknown, however it has been revealed that the bombing was not approved by the UNSC. This was perceived negatively by many nations, including the USSR, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

The United States of America has justified the bombings by saying it was a bombing to secure Air Supremacy. The USSR is trying to contain the situation by trying to make the Yugoslav government sign a peace treaty, but most doubt this as being sincere. Even though the USSR and Yugoslavia have mended relations after the New Union Treaty, they still are relatively icy.

First Lady Raisa Gorbacheva Dies

First Lady Raisa Gorbacheva died today in a Munster hospital, after going through a long bout of leukemia.

Married to the President in 1959, their long 46 year marriage has ended in tragedy just days after their anniversary. Gorbachev was reportedly distraught, saying that "the light of his life has finally burned out". Her body is being transported to Moscow, where it shall lie in state for 3 days before being buried.

The First Lady's untimely death has been met with condolences from all over the world, most notably Georgia and Armenia, two other member states of the Common Security Treaty. The USA has also issued condolences, with President Bush sending a bouquet of flowers to Gorbachev. This has not been officially verified, however, and is just a rumor.

Alexander Lebedev of the Social Democrats Elected President

As the votes are tallied, the people have made their choice; the protégé of former President Gorbachev, Alexander Lebedev, has been elected President of the Soviet Union.

Close with the former President, his election has been met with approval by the Agrarian Party and Gorbachev. The CPSU,
LDPSU, and the Monarchists have issued disapproval but no real objections. Speaking of the LDPSU, they were surprisingly the second largest party elected, obtaining 29% of seats within the Supreme Soviet.

In the US, George Bush has been elected President. Son of George H.W. Bush, the last president to serve during the Cold War, he's expected to further the already surprisingly close ties the USA and the USSR have.

Terror Attacks Rock the USSR

The USSR has suffered its largest terror attack since the Minsk Bombings in 1999, killing 169 people.

At 10:36 in the morning, Moscow time, a large bomb detonated directly under the Red Square, killing 66 people and wounding ~200. Approximately 20 minutes later, another large bomb exploded the 3 cars in the Moscow Metro, killing everybody inside, including 16 members of the Supreme Soviet and 87 civilians.

Finally, at around 11:30, the last bomb was defused by a Spetsnaz Bomb Squad in the Kremlin, right under the President's office. The President was safely evacuated when the bomb was discovered, and was escorted to an undisclosed location. From said location, he gave a national broadcast, claiming that the attacks were the act of a "cowardly" and "an act that was not preformed by a single individual, but by an organization". After his broadcast, Al-Qaeda, the group that claimed responsibility for the 1999 Minsk bombings, claimed responsibility and said that "one of the two Great Satans has been mortally wounded". It is unknown why they said "one" of the great Satans, and many do not know why.

Twin Towers Attacked

The United States of America was attacked by Al-Qaeda today.

At 8:46 am, five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center's North Tower, causing a massive explosion. Many expected the crash to be an accident, but less than 25 minutes later, another plane flew into the South Tower, causing yet another massive explosion. At this point, most knew the attacks not to be an accident. Many onlookers were shocked by the crashes themselves, but many were went screaming from the streets of New York, as at 9:59 am the South Tower collapsed on itself, killing almost everybody left inside. At 10:28 am, the North Tower also collapsed, with WTC 7 collapsing later as a result of fires spreading from the two towers. The New York Skyline has been permanently scarred.

At 9:37 am, five hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon at Arlington, Virginia. While not causing significant structural damage, many were killed. On United Airlines Flight 93, valiant, more than honorable passengers on the plane broke into the cockpit and fought the hijackers, making the plane crash into a field in Pennsylvania. The expected capital was either the Capital Building or the White House, where the President of the United States resides. The death toll is still rising, with numbers already exceeding 2,000, making it the deadliest terror attack by far in modern history.

The attacked has been condemned almost universally, notably even by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, a staunch U.S. adversary. However, fields of people in Pakistan and even Saddam Hussein, the President of the Iraq, applauded or cheered as they heard news of the attacks, with various posters and murals showing Saddam Hussein or Iraqi Airlines celebrating or attacking the WTC.

President Lebedev said that "words can not define how much the attack was not just cowardly but absolutely abhorrent," and said that he "mourns not at, but with the American people and the United States of America". So soon after the Moscow Bombings, the two nations seem united in their stance on terrorism, with more than one person in Soviet mourning demonstrations holding a sign that show the Soviet and American flags wrapped around each other, with the word "EMBRACE" on the top of the sign. U.S. President George W. Bush has declared a "war on terror," and has called nations to rally around his cause.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Refuses to Extradite Usama bin Laden

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has refused to extradite Usama bin Laden, leader of Al-Qaeda.

The Taliban have refused to hand him over unless they were provided "concrete proof" that he was involved in the 9/11 attacks, which they say that the USA does not have.

President Bush was reportedly outraged by this, and reportedly has drawn up war plans against the Taliban. Many experts predict the situation will boil over into war, with President Bush calling the "Coalition of the Willing" to invade Afghanistan with him. The United Kingdom, Germany, and the Soviet Union have responded positively to this call, with Soviet forces moving towards the Afghan border.

USA, UK, Germany, USSR invade Afghanistan

Forces from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany have landed in Afghanistan, while Soviet forces have begun pouring over the Afghan border. The offical casus belli for the invasion was to hunt down Usama Bin Laden, leader of Al-Qaeda, which the Islamic Emirate was accused of harboring.

The Islamic Emirate has called the invasion illegal, and has demanded the UN to stop the invasion. Given the Taliban's overseas reputation, however, this demand has fallen on deaf ears. The USSR has cooperated the closest with the Northern Alliance, who were their enemies just a short 16 years ago, giving them weaponry, vehicles, and air support.

Taliban Government Ousted
Islamic State of Afghanistan

The government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has fallen to the Coalition and the Northern Alliance.

Soviet and American forces announced the capture of Kabul a short 3 days ago, and yesterday evening, the Taliban were officially ousted from Afghanistan. Under Soviet, American, German, and British arbitration, the Northern Alliance was given almost full reign over the new Islamic State of Afghanistan.

With the Taliban ousted, under Soviet pressure, all foreign forces were pulled out of Afghanistan except for diplomats from Germany, the UK, Britain, and the USSR.

Usama Bin Laden was not found, and his current location is unknown. It is theorized he either fled to neighboring Iran, Pakistan, or the much more dangerous Soviet Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan.

Queen Elizabeth II Celebrates her Golden Jubilee
London, England, United Kingdom

Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Realms, celebrates her 50 year reign as Queen today.

The Queen shall begin her tour of the Commonwealth Realms in Jamaica, where she shall begin her tour throughout the entirety of the Commonwealth. The queen is expected to fly into Jamaica in a few days, where she shall begin a tour of the country before moving on to New Zealand.

She shall visit Canada and Australia later in the year, and celebrations shall begin in the United Kingdom between May and June. Many journalists expect the celebrations in the UK to fail, reporting that people are not interested in the monarchy. Some journalists do dispute this, but the majority don't expect the Jubilee celebrations to be too major.

Far-Right Leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky Shot Dead

Leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Zhirnovsky, was shot dead today in Leningrad.

While a perpetrator has been discovered and arrested, some people think that this was a hit authored by one of the main opposition parties to the LDPSU: although all opposition leaders have denied, some members of the Monarchist Party and one member of the LPDSU in the Supreme Soviet have publicly declared that the hit was ordered by the Communist Party.

The LPDSU is in the midst of a power vacuum, and many aren't sure who will come out on top. Many expect young upstart Konstantin Kasimovsky, a self declared National Socialist, to take the reigns, though many hope for a more moderate right-wing member of the party to take hold.

The National Bolshevik party has also taken the time to announce their merger with the LPDSU, and the merger shall be completed soon. While illegal, the government can do nothing if the party merges with the LPDSU.

Far-Right Liberal Democratic Party Fractures

A month after the death of its leader, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the Liberal Democratic Party of the Soviet Union has been officially dissolved.

The final papers on its dissolution were signed yesterday morning, and it has reportedly fractured into 3 main parties: The Soviet Conservative Union, moderate conservatives, the Christian Soviets, a right-wing conservative party, and the All-Russian Party, a far-right party advocating for mostly the same policies as Zhirinovsky.

While not being officially registered until 2005, the next voting session, the 3 new parties have already divided the seats held by the LDPSU by themselves, splitting it in to 3 equal parts. All 3 parties have claimed to be its legitimate successor, and if this is not cleared up soon, they may not be able to run in the next election cycle.

East Timor Gains Independence

East Timor has gained independence from the government of Indonesia, following decades of protests and guerrilla warfare.

Invaded by Indonesia in 1975, East Timorese and people from countries abroad; from the USA to Leningrad have protested the invasion and have protested for East Timorese independence. This was finally granted today, as East Timor has been internationally recognized.

The East Timorese flag has been flown over the capital city of Dili, signifying the newly gained independence of the region. With the Aceh insurgency in Sumatra, some believe that the Aceh region may gain independence itself; however, this is highly debated, and some doubt.

Yugoslavia Officially Dissolved

The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has been officially dissolved, and is now a state of Union between Serbia and Montenegro.

The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was dissolved in 1992, and replaced with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia following the Yugoslav Wars. The Yugoslav Wars were the deadliest European wars in the last 50 years, and the first genocide in Europe since the Holocaust. Croats and Bosniaks killed Serbs, and Serbs killed Croats, Bosniaks, and Albanians.

Both NATO and the UN intervened, with limited success. Following the announcement of the dissolution of the FR Yugoslavia, many weren't surprised. Yugoslavia lost power after the death of Tito, and after the fall of communism in the USSR, Yugoslavia eventually ceased to exist on the world stage.

Vice President Putin Resigns, Crosses Floor

Vice President Vladimir Putin has unexpectedly, and, very scandalously, resigned from his position and has crossed the floor to the Soviet Conservatives.

A highly illegal move, reportedly nobody acted to stop him, possibly by either being too stunned to say anything or being possibly payed off by the former Vice President. He has already stabilized his position within the Soviet Conservatives, and has been made Co-Chairman; this was highly scrutinized, and upon his return to Leningrad, he was arrested for illegal moves against the stability of the USSR.

He has pleaded his case in prison, claiming that "his moves were completely legal," and that "a country that calls itself a democracy should allow parties to fluctuate." However, many expect him to be found guilty, including President Lebedev. Konstantin Titov has been signed as acting Vice President, and shall be made the official vice president in the next few weeks.

Pro-Putin Protesters March on Moscow

"Free Putin!" call the protesters in Moscow today, as former VP Putin's trial begins. Calling on the fact that crossing the floor is not illegal in the Supreme Soviet, and that a replacement vice president was easily found, they claim that Putin's actions were not illegal.

Likely to be in his defense today, Putin has decided to take up his own defense, citing his law degree obtained in 1975 and his experience in human nature as a former KGB intelligence officer. His defense begins today, and he is expected to cite the people's protests and what they assume is not an illegal action in his opening remarks and trial today.

President Lebedev was not available for comment.

Former Vice President Putin Acquitted

Former Vice President Vladimir Putin has been acquitted of all charges following a week of trial.

Accused and arrested of endangering Soviet security, protests calling for his release and his own defense of the move not being illegal and that "a democratic country can not have politics that arrest politicians for not having a certain view," he has been acquitted of all charges and released. In a press conference after his release, he said that "the charges were bogus," and that "the President is attempting to seize power, like Khrushchev in 1953."

President Lebedev was not available for comment.

Ronald Reagan Dies
California, United States of America

Former President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, pictured left, has died today of pneumonia complicated by Alzheimer's in his home in California. He was 95.

President of the USA from 1981 to 1989, he oversaw the escalation and subsequent de-escalation of tension between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the USA. He met with then-Premier Gorbachev many times, and delivered a message to him in the streets of Berlin that would echo in the rubble of the Berlin Wall: "Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev...Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Former President Gorbachev is to attend his funeral on June 11, and he has given a eulogy of the former President:

"The dialogue that President Reagan and I started was difficult. To reach agreement, particularly on arms control and security, we had to overcome mistrust and the barriers of numerous problems and prejudices. I don't know whether we would have been able to agree and to insist on the implementation of our agreements with a different person at the helm of American government. True, Reagan was a man of the right. But, while adhering to his convictions, with which one could agree or disagree, he was not dogmatic; he was looking for negotiations and cooperation. And this was the most important thing to me: he had the trust of the American people." President Gorbachev is to be leading the dignitaries.

USSR Joins the European Union
Brussels, Belgium

The Soviet Union has been allowed to join the European Union, after a referendum that saw 60% of the population of the USSR decide to join the European Union.

Gorbachev has applauded the decision, while Chairman Silayev has expressed disappointment towards the decision, but said that the decision was made by the people nonetheless. A crowd has gathered in the Red Square, flying the Red Flag and the flag of the European Union. President Lebedev is to visit Brussels tommorow, and his plane is already in the air.

Some crowds protested the decision, but Gorbachev has personally given a message from his Dacha, saying that "this shall be a great stepping stone towards pan-European cooperation" and "a definitive proof that the USSR has no hostile relations towards the West."
