Cartoonist fired over Politically Incorrect Drawing

Postby Kowani » Thu Jul 04, 2019 5:37 pm

Source

Tl;dr:
A publishing company in New Brunswick, Canada, has terminated its contract with cartoonist Michael de Adder after a drawing he did of President Donald Trump standing over the bodies of two drowned migrants went viral on social media

Of course, they’re denying it had anything to do with the cartoon.

Personally, I find it interesting how the normal “Free Speech Crowd” is completely silent on this issue. As for the actual firing, I’m surprised that this happened in Canada, but that’s business.

Reading the article you posted it look like all parties involved agree that you're lying.

You don’t find it suspicious that right after he draws a Cartoon criticizing Trump, he gets fired?

By that you mean 1/3 parties. Excellent math.

I remember seeing this being talked about on Secular Talk. I condemn this, as one should not be punished for criticizing a head of state.

We're expected to believe he was fired over the cartoon because one person (and not even the one who was fired) claimed so?

What a joke.

tbqh if you can't cut ties with a political cartoonist over their political cartoons, I'm a little curious as to what you can cut ties with them over.

In trump america, any and all criticism of the president is a heinous offense. Donald Trump is defending American freedom by taking away freedoms

In other words, I wish we could make George orwell fiction again

You can, but cases like this should be condemned. This is a stupid reason to fire someone, and I have the right to comment on it; I'm not going to advocate that the state override the company's decision though.

There's no real evidence he was fired over the cartoon. It's just the claim of one person who was uninvolved in the matter to begin with.

I don't even think it's a stupid decision, necessarily. Reflective of a stupid political situation, perhaps. But political cartoons are geared towards confirming the biases of their readers. If a political cartoon offends too many of its readers, such as, say, by acknowledging that the policies of an administration have led to horrifying outcomes, it doesn't serve its purpose. At least not for most for-profit companies.

It's a stupid world, but not a stupid reason.

The Irving Group owns every English-language newspaper in the region. They are heavily involved with the timber products industry, which is heavily dependent on exports to the US. Per the cartoonist this is not the first time he has been warned off an editorial subject not to the liking of his employers; his cartoons were rejected 54 times over one year. He asked them why he was let go; they wouldn't tell him. If that's not "beyond a reasonable doubt" evidence it's surely "a preponderance of" evidence.

Fortunately he still has contracts with other publications so will just need to replace a portion of his income from the job he does so well.

On the other...why should I care about anything that happens in America's hat?

I thought his being let go had nothing to do with the cartoon and even the artist himself said so, or something along the lines of he wasnt losing his job because of political reasons.

Seems to be an overreaction, but if we're going to have privately-owned newspapers presumably they get to choose cartoonists that fit their editorial perspective. I suppose everyone could send in their scrawls to a central agency who'd hold a daily raffle for it.
