So basically what you're saying is that you get paid the exact same amount, say, legislating the laws of your county or state as we might do volunteering once a week at Oxfam?

And then people wonder why politics at the state or local level is often broken as hell.

America is very opposed to motivating people with money. That would be communism. In the capitalist USA, people work for the benefit of all, not to enrich themselves.

Members of parliament and devolved governments get paid as it's full time work (and helps discourage corruption, in theory). Local councillors have their pay set by the council (although it's rarely a formal salary, and more likely to be expenses or an allowance), which is one of the many reasons the way we run local government is fucking stupid.

Yup. Signing up for actually.

At least that role does come with some mandatory legal training and it's only 13 days (or, if you choose, 26 half-days) of doing it per year.

Already sent off my application!

I've heard some pretty bad criticism about the legal training that you're given. To put it in context with how bad it is though, I've done a 3-year law degree, which included a semester including criminal law and another with the law of evidence. That doesn't entitle me to be a barrister or a solicitor, never mind a judge; for this you've an extra year of legal practise course or bar qualification. To be a judge expect years more gaining experience before you can even be considered.

Yet we allow people with a few days legal training to make legal decisions (different from the factual decisions made by a jury) that can lead to someone being in prison for months. It's perhaps the worst system in existance in a country that actually respects the rule of law.

Pretty much every criminal case starts in a Magistrate's Court. Depending on the severity they will either hear the case in full, or decide their sentencing powers are insufficient and send it off to be heard in the actual Crown Court.

There are some fairly heavy restrictions there, though: most really minor stuff they can't send off to the Crown Court, and anything really serious they basically just consider bail and indict.

The only evidence they've got is that Corbyn is a critic of Israel and he met with Hamas and Hezbollah, of course they purposely ignore the fact that the only reason he met with them is so he can negotiate a peace deal, it's the same reason he met with the IRA.

That's kind of right. It must be pointed out however that there's a government push to put more of those cases which can be either way (more serious assaults, etc) into the magistrates courts as they're cheaper.

I followed the rules in there. I occasionally bend the rules on holiday, but if a guide etc explicitly tells me not to do one specific thing then I abide by it.
