Five members of the PALSH surrounded the stage, separating the crowd of roughly 100 from their leader on stage Alf Stefan. They where dressed in all black police riot gear holding police issued batons and armed with smuggled in semi-auto pistols, Black Balaclavas covered their face and hid their identities from the crowd.

Communist style flags and pictures of Stalin graced the area.

On stage Alf was ranting about the how the government was doing nothing.

“The SLP/R are not your friends! Nyberg is not your friend! They do not care about the working class, they only care about their wallets, capitalism, and the monarchy!! The strike proves it!!”

The crowd roared

“The NPP and Svensson claims to be your friends but they run the police!! They run the system that keeps us from organizing, the system that is used against striking workers and protesters!! They too are beholden to the monarchy and the capitalists!! For fucks sake they are lead by nobles!!”

The crowd erupted in cheers

“Only I, Alf Stefan, can lead this great community into a new age! Only the People’s Army for the Liberation of Saint Hilda can free the people!!”

The cheering from the crowd was deafening

Unlike the two main candidates Alf Stefan planned to win in a different way. He wanted the strike to continue as long as possible and to that end he showed up at the strike calling for more workers to join to support their brothers and sisters. He also secretly had the People’s Army for the Liberation of Saint Hilda harasse and threaten people who might try and vote for the opposition. He was going to win this race by any means necessary

The fact that a homophobe that thinks that his outdated social views bear more relevance than the economic issues that plague many of the residents of our glorious city might win the mayoralty is rather disturbing.

Fort Ulrike Issue, 3/07/2019

Juliette Hopp, serious candidate?

Image
Juliette Hopp declared candidacy via social media
- Juliette Hopp, twenty-two years old, is currently the youngest candidate to have fulfilled the electoral requirements to file for the Fort Ulrike municipal election. A student at Fort Ulrike University, Hopp spends most of her spare time as a lead organizer on the board of Making Change, a local organization that manages three homeless shelters, a food bank, and a community center.

The Center-Progressive Party, of which Hopp has been a registered member since the formation of the party in 2018, has trended towards strong bases in young voters, placed at the feet of such policies as lowering the voting age, legalizing cannabis, and removing interest from student debts. In Fort Ulrike this is even more pronounced, where Next Generation, the youth wing of C-P, makes up more than half the total registered party members. The FUU Campus Center-Progressives, a local student movement, has significant influence over the city's branch of the party, due to the numerous and passionate volunteers the movement organizes.

After FUUCC-P endorsed Hopp, the party leadership soon followed, and Hopp received the Center-Progressive nomination for the mayoralty. Center-Progressive is considered a minor party on the national scale, but in liberal urban areas support for the party increases significantly. Some have questioned whether Hopp can be considered a serious candidate for the position of mayor of one of the largest cities in Saint Hilda, though she has maintained that "I am in this race, and I'm more ready for this than my examinations."

Hopp was quick in setting up a website, www.HoppToIt.sh, which features a number of policy proposals for the city, including immediate backpay for struggling utility and refuse workers, the creation of a free municipal ambulance service, and investigating the re-invigoration of a tram network in the city. Hopp has earned some credit for standing up for the city, promising she will deliver bills to the national government for use of the city's land and buildings, and fight for devolved powers for a municipal assembly.

Notably, throughout Hopp's frenetic social media activity so far, she has yet to lash out against the other candidates in the race, staying above the muck many of the other candidates had fallen into with public arguments on twitter and elsewhere. Hopp has promised to run a campaign "as positive as [she] can", which has drawn some attention to the young candidate from some locals tired of the mudslinging that has defined Saint Hildan politics since independence.

Will any of it be enough for Juliette Hopp to topple the political giants of the NPP and the Liberal-Green Alliance? Only time will tell.

James Kendall strode to the podium, excited to begin his campaign for Commissioner of Fort Ulrika. He reviewed his notes one more time, then stepped up and cleared his throat. "Ladies and gentlemen, my countrymen, my fellow Fort Ulrikans, allow me to introduce myself. My name is James Kendall, and I never thought I would be standing here today before you. You know, statistics say that most children who grow up in a broken home, especially children of color, end up in jail. Those kids that get suspended in elementary school don't have the best outcomes. They don't graduate as often, go to college as often, as kids who don't get suspended. They are ignored, incarcerated, and then left behind once they get out. And that could have been me. But I was saved by a strong community and the ability to go to a good school, a school that worked for me. And that's what I'm here to talk to you about today. A Fort Ulrika that works for everyone."

He paused for applause. Someone shouted, "Go on now!" Another said, "Amen!" There were murmurs of "Mmhmm" and "That's right" from the crowd as well.

"Our way forward starts with our values. Our values are our guiding principles, what we stand for. Without something to stand for, you'll fall for anything. And my community raised me up the traditional way. Work hard, play fair, take care of your family and community, never forget those who helped you. Protect and defend those you love. Don't be greedy, but don't let anyone give you less than your fair share. Forgive your enemies, give back to your community and to God. These are the values that guide me every day. But they are not the values that our current government has. They try to divide us, the worker against the manager, religious against nonreligious, man against woman. They say we are on completely different sides, that one side is trying to stop the freedoms of the other side. Don't get me wrong, there is discrimination in society. But I will be a uniter, not a divider. We will let these time-tested values guide us and unite everyone around them."

More clapping and cheering from the smallish crowd.

"But we do have problems to solve. But traditional solutions just aren't going to work. The garbage collector strike, for instance. Now I stand with those garbage collectors, because you know a whole lot of them look like me and have kids that looked like me when I was young, and they're worrying about how to raise those kids up right, like my community raised me. And it isn't fair that these men and women who do an essential job aren't treated right. It is a problem that falls too heavily on the shoulders of black and brown folks. That's why I support better pay and benefits for those folks. But it isn't just about them, it's about us too. We need to move forward with ways to reduce the amount of trash we produce, to turn it into compost and recyclables so we don't overload this beautiful island of ours. That's why I support incentives for ending food waste, and reducing the trash we generate. I look forward to the day when the garbage collectors are recycling collectors, and we treat them like who they are: the folks that hold this city together! We have to have modern solutions for modern problems."

Some of the garbage collectors in the crowd whooped and hollered.

"Our schools are a modern problem as well. The way we've been doing things is broken. And the answer isn't just throw more money at the problem, increase property taxes again, which makes landlords increase the rent for our poorer and especially black and brown brothers and sisters. We need innovative, modern solutions. That's why I support charter schools and opportunity grants for our young folks who aren't being served by the public schools. I support alternative learning programs, apprenticeships, vocational and technical education, school choice within traditional public schools, and other things that let our kids be who they are and discover their talents. And before you go saying I hate public schools, two of my kids are in public school, because it works for them. My youngest, Max, he's going to a private school where his talents and gifts are recognized and he can get the specialized instruction he needs. Not everyone can send their kid to private school, so we should make it easier. We have to have modern solutions. I'm tired of this government's tired old so-called solutions."

"I'm tired too!" somebody in the crowd yelled.

"But despite the problems, I have hope. Hope is the one thing nobody can take away from you, because it's not dependent on things as they are. It depends on how things can be. Through God, all things are possible. So I always have hope. And I have hope that this city can be better, that this nation can be better! Whoever tries to divide us, whether it's fascists, communists, bureaucrats, or even a so-called "liberal" government, they will fail! No weapon formed against us shall prosper. We shall be united, not divided! We shall be strong. Black, white, indigenous, man, woman, gay, straight, young, old, we all want security, prosperity, and opportunity! And that is what we can have. Safety from criminals and corrupt cops, more money in our pockets, and the opportunity for any child to go to any school, get a good education, and succeed! That, my brothers and sisters, is why I am running to be your next Municipal Commissioner! Join me, join patriots everywhere, and let's make a Fort Ulrika that works for everyone! Thank you!"

The crowd erupted and James waved to them, flushed with the feeling of a campaign just begun. They had a fighting chance, and they were going to make the most of it.

Alastar got an phone call.

"Parliamentarian Macdanieus, you have a call from someone."

"Ralph I know," Ralph was the clerk secretary who was assigned as some one to do work organizing files and researching on contacts. Alastar picked up the phone while drinking his beer.

"Hi." the voice was familiar

"I want to congratulate you on your win in the election. Must be a very exciting day."

"Well what we all do really is just go on talk to our constituents debate and best of all write laws. Umm, Kerry?"

"I see you've remembered."

"Golly only been a few years. Haven't seen you in a while what are you doing on these parts nowadays?" Alastar ushered his secretary away.

"I'm at the university and the department is a bloody mess. There's been a lot of mix up and it's taking longer to process everything. The new head of the department is an asshole, he is deliberately changing the policies and making the grading less strict and the new professors that are getting hired have no networking experience."

"That seems troubling," he then sipped some beer,"Anything to solve it?"

"Well I was thinking perhaps you could come over and you would sometimes always bring a presence I rather really think the dean can be convinced for you to replace him or at least have you for a job and uhh like when your term is over of course."

"Kerry, that's a appreciative offer, but I have already had my time and I just do not want to go through the trouble. "

"The department is gone down hill ever since 2017. We could use some help."

"I really need to go now. I have some work to do and some other people lobbyists that are scheduled to contact me and experts that are trying to advise me on all these subjects like the environment and education to go meet."

Thoughts on the Fort Ulrika election

Jennifer Bennet-July 2, 2019
Politics

Sankta Hilda News 5 is an independent and neutral news network. The following piece has been reviewed and edited as to not display a partisan bias in our news reporting

An election in the capital city of Fort Ulrika has been called, among them being the election for City Commissioner. Along with the big parties such as NPP and SLP/R, some smaller localized parties have joined the race as well. The Conservative Association of Fort Ulrika (CAFU), a local conservative, has put forward a candidate by the name of Njal Stefanson. The other small party is a Stalinist radical party, the People's Army for the Liberation of Saint Hilda. Alf Stefan, the leader of this smaller party, is making news with his aggressive political tactics in an attempt to win this election.

The bigger parties include the SLP/R, who will put forward the incumbent Johanna Nyberg. The NPP, who put forward Police Chief Elias Svensson. And Republic, Center-Progressive, SHAPC, and CPP/AAP. They've nominated Anne Lyksborg, Juliette Hopp, James Kendall, Christen Hannson respectively.

As early polling suggests, the incumbent commissioner has an edge on her competition, attributed to incumbency, divided voter base on the right, and overall safety in voting for the status quo. Fort Ulrika is also seen as a leftist urban city which would be a safe vote for any SLP/R candidate.

Campaign funds and miscellaneous expenses have also not been disclosed by any candidate, mainly due to a lack of anyone asking. SH News 5 is unable to track where the candidates have received their funds, but we suspect it's a combination of out-of-pocket payments and under-the-table donations.

Seeing as how this election is tight and the voting is early, SH News 5 places this election as:

Christen Hannson for City Commissioner

Vote for Christen Hannson and the Christian People's Congress / Agricultural Alliance Party because ...
We will put you and your family first.
We will put an end to homelessness in our capital city, for good.
We will provide opportunities for our youth to excel.
We will return dignity to our political system, fighting the good fight.
We will be the outlet for voters to try a new direction.

Christen Hannson, a local Parish leader, is dedicated to the city of Fort Ulrika. As Parish leader of a Lutheran congregation, Hannson has brought people together throughout our city to provide for the needy. Hannson is well known for his efforts to take care of the homeless, the down-trodden and poor in Fort Ulrika and he truly believes this is a damning issue for the capital city. Join us in fighting for better local government in Fort Ulrika and providing for those who need help. Ditch the big parties and their corruption, we need to fix our system and bring justice to everyone.

Vote for Christen Hannson! Vote for CPC/AAP!

Christen Hannson
@Hannson4CityCommissioner

I want to serve our community more, but this time as City Commissioner. I want it to be my goal to end homelessness and provide for the needy in Fort Ulrika; thus far the only candidate to commit to it. We can see a stronger community if we fight for it, and I am always ready to fight for it.

Juliette Hopp
@HoppToIt

@SHNFive has questioned where campaign funds are coming from for the candidates in this election. It's the kind of question that needs to be asked more often. My campaign has so far been funded by a lump payment from the national Center-Progressive Party. All the details of my campaign financing are now publicly available at www.HoppToIt.sh and I hope other candidates will follow my lead. #AccountableGovt

The support my campaign gets comes from the Christian People's Congress / Agricultural Alliance Party campaign funds and local small dollar donations. I have also received support through my local church. #AccountableGovt

Christen Hannson - who is he and what is he doing?

Christen Hannson is not your usual political candidate; yet here we are. He is "father, husband and clergyman" according to his own Twitter biography and he's also running for City Commissioner of Fort Ulrika. Hannson runs a particularly popular Parish in the center of Fort Ulrika, a parish that has the highest attendance rate in the entire city. People who attend he services can vouch for his reliability, but what does he candidacy mean for the city, as a whole?

"A lot of things," he told us in an exclusive interview. "I'm sick of morals and ethics being an after thought in politics, both nationally and on a smaller level, like here in Fort Ulrika," Hannson commented. His most major platform is tackling the homeless issue in the nations capital, something Hannson regards as one of these moral and ethical let-downs. Although such a position as City Commissioner is not involved in anti-poverty projects, Christen Hannson says that he wants to work with community groups, including his own parish, to sponsor programs to house and feed the homeless. Since Hannson has been the clergyman at his local parish, he has always had weekly soup kitchens that usually draw particular attention among those doing it tough in Fort Ulrika.

"We can all do small things, but sometimes we need to agitate for bigger, more systematic change to make a difference."

We followed him around as he stapled his political campaign posters to power poles, fixed political signs in supporters front-yards and leafleted neighborhoods with his material. The entire time, Hannson was wearing his parish gowns, we asked him why he did that. "It helps people remember me a little better," he said, while stuffing his leaflets in a letter-box. "They see me walking down the street in my gown and they're like - hey, that's the clergyman from down the road! Otherwise, I suspect not as many locals would recognize me." And that is an issue for Hannson. As the field of candidates grows, it's becoming more difficult to stand-out among the crowd. The look of a clergyman seems to be his political tactic and possibly earn the votes of the more religiously minded.

If the recent polls say anything, it's not looking particularly good for Hannson. In one poll, he placed second last, ahead only of a Stalinist candidate. Overall, however, he seems not to be fazed. A volunteer of his said that their campaign was "not concerned with polling, because the only poll that counts is the one on election day." This election fervor is the first for the recently merged Christian People's Congress and the Agricultural Alliance Party. The Agricultural Alliance Party couldn't have fathomed fielding a candidate in the urban mayoral races such as Fort Ulrika. but, because of their merger, the AAP has been able to broaden their horizons in their target audience. This works in the opposite direction, too. The CPC can now jump on the success of the AAP in many rural and regional areas of Saint Hilda. While the candidates do not like to say, Christen Hannson leans more to the CPC side of the amalgamated party. Not quite the Agricultural man himself.

When asked on the other candidates, Hannson preferred not to respond. "I don't like nasty campaigns, I know some people want it to become nasty, but I won't fall down their rabbit hole," he said. "We work closely with many other parties, especially the National People's Party, but of course, we would prefer if our candidates were elected," Hannson chuckled to himself. It remains to be unknown whether his army of volunteers and campaign budget will be able to pull it off, even with the other major high profile candidates. Time will tell for Christen Hannson and the rest of the candidates.

Fort Ulrike University Student Union Hall

Juliette grinned as she stepped onto the stage, to a round of applause. She was in a cheerful mood. The most recent poll put her in the top half of candidates, a real contender in the election. She was now here to receive an official endorsement from the Fort Ulrike Students' Association after being confirmed as not a paper candidate, and quickly producing a strong set of policies such as a cultural subsidy, connecting the universities to central city via trams, and supporting C-P party policies like a lower voting age and legal marijuana.

Hannah and Stefan, the co-presidents of the association, had just finished a small speech confirming the endorsement of Hopp. They smiled as she passed them to the microphone, they had met before in student politics. Juliette cleared her throat. "I want to thank Hannah and Stefan for their kind words, the FUU Student Union for the use of this venue, and the Fort Ulrike Students' Association for their endorsement of our campaign. I'm so excited to be able to stand here as a serious candidate for the Municipal Commissioner, I feel like it's a huge step in the right direction for youth representation in politics."

"This isn't really about who I am though, it's about what we will do for the city we love. And if you go to my website, you'll see... maybe too much information about what we want to do." Some in the crowd laugh. "To summarize, we're going to start paying our city employees again," some in the crowd clap. "We're going to set up a municipal ambulance service, rebuild our tram system including connecting the universities to the inner city," more applause, "Thank you. We're also planning out a cultural subsidy for everyone in the city, among many other policies. And we know how we're going to pay for it all, too."

"First of all, it's time for the wealthy landowners who take advantage of our municipal infrastructure to start paying into it, which means a municipal property tax. Secondly, it's about time the national government started paying it's dues for all the police and security requirements, the use of our historic buildings, and the use of our infrastructure. So we're going to start billing the government." There is a whoop from the crowd, followed by half laughter and half cheering.

"So, our campaign could use a few volunteers for doorknocking, plastering, that kind of thing. You can register online, or talk to Johan," Juliette gestured to a young man by the side of the stage who raised his hand, "if you want to get involved in that. Other than that... we're not looking for any money at the moment, but if you want to donate to help there's a charitable organization called Making Change which runs shelters and foodbanks in the city, and they could use any support you can give. Alright, that's it from me. Thank you again to everyone, and especially thank you all for coming to listen to me ramble, I hope to see you all again soon!"

@JamesKendallCampaign

There's been some talk recently about campaign funding. Mine is funded through the Fort Ulrika SHAPC, private donations by individuals, and money out of my own pocket. AFAIK, I'm the only candidate who has made that kind of personal sacrifice for our city, because I believe in Fort Ulrika. #TraditionalvaluesModernsolutions #OurNationRisingLikeTheSun 1/2

Donating to a campaign is one of the ways people can make their voice heard. I love SHAPC, but I'm not beholden to it. I'm my own man and the people are my only boss. Make your voice heard by donating to our campaign and getting out to vote on Election Day! #TraditionalvaluesModernsolutions #OurNationRisingLikeTheSun 2/2

The polling shows SHAPC is gaining traction locally. We stand for all the citizens in Saint Hilda, and are dedicated to preserving traditions. We represent everyone, from the students and teachers in the failed education system, to the garbage collectors currently on strike.#SHAPC #FortUlrika
