Japan Resumes Whaling

Postby Sapientia Et Bellum » Mon Jul 01, 2019 11:12 pm

https://www.usnews.com/news/world-repor ... r-31-years

After nearly 30 years, Japan has resumed the practice of commercial whaling after leaving the International Whaling Commision. The whales that are killed, including minke whales which are not an endangered whale species, appear to be primarily used for human consumption.

So NSG, the topic is pretty self explanatory.... Is whaling an ethical form of fishing? Do you believe this will create a slippery slope that will lead to expansion of whaling beyond Japan? Should some sort of international intervention be employed to halt the practice in Japan and other nations?

I want to try whale.

But I think that Japanese whaling won't last long, not without government subsidies. Wales have fallen out of Japanese cuisine or so I hear.

Something to note: Japan is whaling in its waters and its EEZ, it is NOT in the Arctic or Antarctic waters, and is well clear of the Whale Sanctuary.

I highly doubt that, unless the ministry continues to feed subsidies, that it can be sustained. It's just not eaten over here as it once was. Those who have a fondness for it are the older generation who remember the post-war years. The younger generation... they like McDonald's too much.

What is the rationale for it being resumed and subsided when it is commercially not worth it?

Who was it that had the New England cookbook with the recipe that started with acquiring a whale? I know it came up in one of the food threads somewhere on NS. Now we can try that recipe!

Or that's the excuse anyway. Mostly it's because they want to and they are really, really hoping they can get young people to eat it. Japan's tired of being beaten up in the international press about this and it's a way of thumbing its nose at the world.

That said, I almost think this is a sneaky way to kill it. When it was scientific whaling, Japan got yelled at and spent a lot of money. Now that it's commercial, I almost want to think that eventually it'll be left to die.

I doubt it though. Too many people are being paid by the budgets at the fisheries ministry to do so.

The Japanese have been in mourning since the passing of the Princess of Wales *nods*.

Here are the simple facts

Japan will always hunt whales.

People will always consume meat.

Consuming meat is ethical and necessary.

Magnificent perhaps. Generally not adorable.

Belugas are sort of cute, but have just... terrible breath.

The issue here is not that whales are attractive, but that they are very intelligent, and also that their populations are vulnerable to over-hunting. Their reproductive cycle is so long that they don't bounce back easily.

Do you see how this is a non-sequitur? Because the argument isn't that "eating meat is bad" (although some people might think so), it's that hunting this particular source of meat is bad. And the statements "People will always consume meat," and "People consuming meat is ethical and necessary" just don't apply to that. Or, if they do, justify eating anything that is meat.

Hope you like your Soylent Green.

Consuming meat is ethical and necessary?

Can you please explain the ethics of intensive land use to grow soy to feed to our animals. Can you please explain the ethics of greenhouse gas emissions(cows) that heat up the planet?

Also, if consuming meat is necessary, how come vegetarians and vegans are surviving? :p

I have eaten whale legally,
I like the taste,
I acknowledge the risks to the environment and prefer beef & pork anyway.
If whaling is somehow done sustainably so that the population is growing while Japan gets to keep its dishes and share it with the rest of us, I don't see an issue.
Of course, this is probably not going to happen and whales will drop in population rapidly, so...
