“And so they fought."

Beyond the Veil: A GATE-Inspired Roleplay
The tale of Strike Group Essex
Parts from Bentus' Unto The Breach with permission. Inspired by the anime Gate and other media.
Greetings, everyone! Welcome to Beyond the Veil. This is my first attempt in a very long time to author and conduct an NS RP of any significant scale. This RP takes its pointers very primarily from the concept of the Japanese manga and anime called Gate, but differs widely from the original concept of Gate. In Gate, it focuses heavily on the activities of the JGSDF operating in a parallel, fantastical world, centering on a reconnaissance unit and a cast of native characters being involved in influencing the political sphere of a certain fantastical kingdom. In GATE, a portal appears in downtown Tokyo where fantastical invaders spill out and mindlessly murder civilians before, expectedly, being curbstomped by main battle tanks and attack helicopters. The JGSDF in Gate operates with absolute technological, tactical, logistical and strategic dominance and have no real risk of being destroyed as every resource of the Japanese nation and military is at their disposal.

Beyond the Vale takes the concept of modern day military forces facing off against a fantastical foe and puts a spin on it. What if we were the ones to visit first?

In our premise, a United States Amphibious Ready Group, centered around the amphibious assault ship Essex, in addition to a multitude of international vessels, enter a freak storm that transports them to such a fantastical world- more specifically, to the shores of a vast empire known as the Empire of Corleans. Cut off from home and completely blind and unaware, "Strike Group Essex" must not only attempt somehow to contact or return to their homeworld, they must ascertain their situation, adapt and survive. Beyond the Veil will center on the adventures of the First Composite Reconnaissance Platoon, a mixed force compiled from across Strike Group Essex's assets. In addition to playing as members of the Strike Group, players may also opt to play as Corlean natives- however their involvement will vary depending on the Platoon's activities. While players may also opt to take control of other members of Strike Group Essex, such as naval officers or pilots, they will be secondary to the nature of this RP. Strike Group Essex as of the start of this RP is a grey area of knowledge for the Empire and information on which is little more than rumor, and the same is true for the Strike Group with information of the Empire of Corleans.

Strike Group Essex deploys not only with the maritime capabilities of modern day warships, but the full potential of a United States Marine Expeditionary Unit, consisting of a battalion of highly-trained, well equipped Marines, a reinforced air wing, tanks and armored vehicles, artillery, and more. While comparatively small to the might of the forces they may face, the capabilities of the Strike Group is unmatched by any force on Corleans. Corlean natives, however, have access to magic and fantastical creatures such as dragons. The actions of our characters will set the fate of the Empire and Strike Group set in writing- for good or ill!

RP Information:

In the early months of the summer of 2019, the United States, as it had in recent years, elevated their commitment to continued naval training and presence in the area of the Pacific Sea alongside their partner countries. One particular exercise was to be performed by the U.S. Navy’s Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), composed not only of amphibious warfare vessels, but also carrying aboard the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, who would later this year be sent on deployment. The Essex would be travelling with a host of ships from allied nations operating alongside the U.S. in the Pacific in formation as a show of force. Aboard some of these ships, as well, were crew and liaisons from other partner countries, welcomed to participate in an exhibition of cooperation.

‘Strike Group Essex’, consisting of a host of 11 ships centered around her, departed port in Yokosuka on May 9th. 200 nautical miles south of Okinawa, in the late night of May 12th, the outside world lost all contact with Strike Group Essex.

Essex and her formation encountered a sudden and massive squall storm in the ocean. Essex’s commander, unable to determine the extent of the storm due to equipment malfunction, ordered the group to steam forward and penetrate rather than wander about within the storm. Three ships were either sunk or lost contact with the Essex during the course of this storm, while the rest of the fleet escaped with moderate damage or casualties. While most of the ships remained easily reparable, the suddenness of the storm and the severity caused a number of casualties.

Upon breaking through the squall, Essex’s radar detected massive radar contacts that were already within range of the fleet and closing fast. Determining the signatures to be a surprise attack by hostile aircraft, Essex’s commander ordered the fleet to open fire. Tracer fire from the fleet’s close-in weapons, machine guns, autocannons and deck guns illuminated the sky for five minutes. The roar of gunfire deafened the night, and when they fell silent, the only noise that remained were the crashing of waves upon the steely hulls of the fleet.

When morning broke over the horizon shortly afterwards, the sailors were stunned to discover what had been engaged. Massive, reptilian creatures, ones that could best be described as akin to dragons, floated in the water, enormous holes punched through their armored carapaces and blood stagnant in the water surrounding. Utterly stunned, Essex’s attempts to regather itself quickly fell upon a number of pitfalls. Satellite, GPS, and long range radio uplinks all failed. Drone and F-35 overflights in any direction could not identify any landmark, nor were their navigational equipment working properly either beyond their compasses. When night fell upon the fleet, no one aboard any of the ships were able to identify any of the objects in the otherwise completely clear sky.

On the dawn of the second day, an F-35 performing CAP over the Strike Group noticed in the water small boats out to sea. Moments later, he saw his first sign of land- and of civilization, a small fishing village sitting on the mouth of a river.

The villagers watched in awe as giant metal creatures roared above them in the skies, setting down amongst them as green men disembarked. However, none of the personnel sent were able to fully understand them. Essex’s commander, expecting to be speaking to Philipino, Chinese or another Asian language, found a surprisingly European dialect instead. Four civilians were returned to the fleet, and- through the tireless work of a group of ten transnational translators over the next day they were able to gain an incredibly basic understanding of the group.

They had found themselves as the first contact with an undiscovered world parallel to Earth, a fantastical land as if one from a fairytale. Specifically they told of their town being a part of a greater Empire of Corlean, a vast nation of humans and similar offshoots, such as demihumans. The civilians also confirmed that the creatures the fleet had killed were indeed dragons- dragons that had been choking their food supply for months, and seemed visibly elated to see dead. When word of this spread upon the return to the village, the “Green Men” of Earth were hailed as heroes.

Upon their second return to the village, Marines who had came bearing gifts and supplies for the civilians found the village instead being terrorized by men in plate armor and carrying streaming banners. The commanding officer of the Marine detachment, upon witnessing one such soldier injuring a civilian, shot him dead. The knights then fell upon the Marines and their helicopters in retribution for interrupting their duties- but were cut short. Rifle fire and a ten second burst from the Venom’s minigun wiped out three quarters of their number. Devastated at this sudden loss, the remainder abandoned their lord, who was immediately captured. If the Marines had been praised before, they were absolutely idolized following their intervention. An enormous feast was thrown for the squad of Marines, and thanks being given throughout the night.

The lord that they had captured, as they discerned, was the lord of their village and a few surrounding it. Essex’s commander, despite the opposition on logistical concerns regarding his decision, decided to remove him and place the lord’s small fief under direct control of the Task Force, in the name of the United Nations as an aegis. Marines stormed and captured his seaside castle with no casualties on either side, and established the Protectorate of Corlean under an American flag.

Within the next few days, the Task Force deployed most of the ground element ashore, setting out to immediately make preparations for a temporary operations base ashore. Dubbed “Naval Station Horizon”, and situated on the abandoned farmlands of the fishing village of Trisondil they had first landed at, it is a first foothold onto the wild expanse of the continent they have found themselves in. The Commander of Strike Group Essex has ordered further exploration by land- particularly to learn more about the country and world they have came to, and to find a way to contact home. Banding together forces from across the fleet, the 1st Composite Reconnaissance Platoon was formed from all aspects of the fleet, and tasked to carry on individual reconnaissance deeper inland.

Even despite the presence of a supply ship with Essex, the fleet’s supplies are not infinite. If Essex does not reestablish contact with home soon, death could befall the members of Strike Group Essex- or perhaps a worse fate looms.
  1. As OP, I have absolute control over all goings-on in relation to this RP. My word is law, and if you cannot agree with that, please see yourself out. Any co-ops I delegate specifically have authority second only to mine.
  2. RP samples are required. If you are a first time poster, two well-written in character paragraphs from any genre will suffice.
  3. While in IC confines permitted, under no circumstances will discrimination, bullying, harassment, or other shitflinging be tolerated in OOC.
  4. Any instance of godmodding, powergaming, or Mary-Sueism is punishable by death.
  5. Please maintain a relative level of activity in this thread. Let myself and everyone else know if you won't be able to post for extended periods.
  6. When it comes to making posts, quality is always superior to quantity. I will not set a hard limit on word count, but a good rule of thumb is to keep it like you would a woman's skirt- long enough to cover everything and short enough to keep it interesting. If needed, I encourage the creation of joint posts.
  7. Obviously, don't do anything to bring site moderation on us. In regards to posting 'explicit' content, please keep it reasonable. No smut- if you need to cover a particularly explicit scene, use the fade to black (FTB) technique if necessary.
  8. I reserve the right to issue punishments or consequences as I see fit. If you disagree with any decision I make, please come speak to me so we can figure something out.
Of course, the most important rule still stands in regards to this RP: Have fun. If you aren't having fun, something's wrong and we should fix it!

For character applications, a few set of guidelines exists to help simplify creation. They are as follows:
  1. Applicants may not possess a paygrade senior to O-3 (USMC Captain/USN Lieutenant) without prior OP approval. This rule does not apply to pilots or naval officers.
  2. You may apply for any character from any nation and with any profession, but there must be a reason why they are with the Essex Strike Group. Why did their home country attach them to the fleet? There will be leeway with this rule but some believability must exist. If there are any concerns with this please don't hesitate to ask so we can figure something out.
  3. Understand that this RP will center around the ground-based actions of a reconnaissance unit, with some attached extras. If you apply to become a pilot or a tank driver, or any other role not attached to the 1st CRP, you cannot expect that you will be utilized unless the situation calls for it. An F-35 pilot can expect a cameo or two but will not become a central character.
  4. You are permitted to apply for a Corlean native if that is what you wish to play. If this is the case, remove any military-specific information questions from your app or do not answer them.
  5. If you intend to apply for a more senior/leadership role within either Corleans or within the Strike Group, such as a ship catain or a highranking noble, please speak to me. The position of Commander for the Strike Group is the only off limits position in this RP, anything else can and may go.
  6. If you have questions or concerns regarding anything for applications, please tell me. I'm more than willing to help out.

Empire of Corleans
The Empire of Corleans is the world of Malarne's largest nation. It is an economic powerhouse, a dominant military force, and a political giant. The Empire is feudal, aristocratic and monarchical in nature. The Empire is ruled by a monarch, known as the Emperor or Empress, where succession is based off of who he or she designates as the heir. While the Emperor holds absolute power over the kingdom of Corleans, in practice he coordinates most major decision making with the aristocratic nobles in the Gilded House, which functions similar to a senate. However, the Emperor himself controls a large, standing military force, more than enabling him to act independently of his lower nobles if he sees it fit. The nobles are able to call their own levies to conduct warfare or enact policy or to join in the Emperor's occasional campaigns. Reigning currently is Emperor Vvenhal Auguren VIII, who has sat his throne for 30 years and is considered a strong and fair ruler, if sometimes impulsive.

The Empire is militaristic and expansionist by nature and regularly conducts expansionist campaigns on its borders. It can muster a large amount of levies from its liege lords and bring them to bear easily.

The Empire is roughly equivalent to Medieval Europe in terms of technology and culture, and is home to somewhere around a dozen million people. Subsistence farming is still the norm, however especially in the cities and particularly in the Capital, art, literature, and architecture flourish under the patronage of the rich. While the Empire is largely a majority human nation who bear rare if any dissimilarities to Earth's humans, other races exist in the Empire. Most notable and numerous of these races are elves; tall, lithe creatures who frequent forests and small villages in the countryside, and demihumans, humanoid creatures who share various animal like features with creatures such as bears, cats, rabbits, snakes, and some rarer demihumans even sharing traits with rarer creatures such as dragons.

Magic is prevalent as well in Corleans. Although a larger portion of humans cannot use magic, most have the potential to do so given training and preparation. Magic can perform acts as simple as starting campfires and easing translation, to as devastating as creating large explosions and enchanted weapons, or as arcane as raising the dead or altering one's appearance. Most magicians choose to specialize in certain schools of magic and find various occupations either in military or civil spheres.

Currently experiencing a time of relative prosperity, Corleans is a state of peace at current- though a sufficient poke may be enough to rouse eagles from their nest.

Order of the Camellia
The Order of the Camellia is a knightly order sworn to the Imperial House of Corleans, specifically the ruling monarch of the house- currently the Emperor. It is a smaller order of 56 sworn knights, including the Crown Princess, and is among the smallest of the House's sworn military groups. However, that does not remove its distinction. The Order of the Camellia is one as old as House Auguren itself, formed by the first Auguren Emperor, Tarmon I, nearly 500 years ago. It has always been a smaller order of knights who serve as a more specialized, elite force on the battlefield, performing scouting, opportunity attacks on exposed flanks, or bridging fledgling gaps in the line. In times of peace they commonly supplement the palace guards in Osephia, or enforce the Emperor's Law in any region of his lands. At the time that Strike Group Essex arrived they were policing in the areas to the far south of the capital, and were among the closest sworn group to the Emperor able to investigate..

The Crown’s Imperial Rangers

A comparably small sub-division of the Empire’s military, the Imperial rangers are a collection of elite scouts tasked with gathering and providing intelligence to the crown and their forces. In times of war, rangers often mobilize with armies to act as advisors, scouts and guides to the forces or move in small isolated groups focused on quietly undergoing important tasks or uncovering vital information from otherwise dangerous, volatile or politically unstable areas. In times of peace however, the rangers are still often scouting for the crown but are also occasionally called upon as spies for matters both internal and external.

The rangers, while respected for their effectiveness, are often seen with a level of mistrust and skepticism if not outright hostility from their vast use of subterfuge and ‘dishonourable’ methods. Nobles rarely work within the rangers as society tends to demand they stay clear in order to preserve their image and the country’s respectable status of nobles, being offered few privileges and fewer authorities only goes to further reduce that number. As a result, nearly the whole of the unit is made from peasantry selected from the wider military.

As their name suggest, the rangers serve the crown and take orders from appointed nobles and commanders within the army. While often used to investigate and guide, rangers are occasionally called upon as agents to perform important or personal tasks ranging from couriering documents to helping to assess lords and their lands. The unit itself is broken up into ranks of trainees, full-rangers, ranger captains and their commander (currently Sir Randolf Galian). With the exception of the commander, the ranks only influence internal elements for the rangers, while they can be given provisional commands, Rangers do not have the right to lead military forces.

Strike Group Essex
Strike Group Essex is an informally named, multinational naval task force consisting of vessels primarily from the United States, but including warships and personnel from a variety of other nations across the world. Strike Group Essex is centered around the Essex Amphibious Ready Group, an American amphibious warfare group consisting of the USS Essex, a landing helicopter dock, the USS Anchorage, an amphibious transport dock, and the USS Rushmore, a dock landing ship. These three ships are capable of supporting the attached American 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, a reinforced battalion-sized infantry formation, in addition to a small air wing, armored vehicles including amphibious assault vehicles and main battle tanks, and an attached logistics unit. While the ARG and its American escorts only have an endurance of around 15 days in theater, they have a massive increase in supplies allocated by the attached Australian replenishment ship HMAS Success. With ample rationing, this will allow the Strike Group to operate for a decent amount of time off of their own supplies, however they are not infinite, and the Strike Group must either secure resources from the new world or acquire reinforcements from their home world.

While no formal command structure exists across the Strike Group, they are certainly not leaderless. Generally, the group defers to the captain of the Essex, US Navy CAPT Arthur Rogers. Rogers, as leader of the Strike Group, commonly gathers the opinions of the other captains and senior officers of his fleet before making his decisions. However, especially illustrated in the establishment of Naval Station Horizon, he is not unwilling to forge ahead with limited support if he feels that his decisions are beneficial. The captains of the group regularly conduct strategy meetings by either video conference if available, or in person if it calls for it. While no real name exists for it, some sailors jokingly refer to the meetings as the 'War Council'.

The warfighting capabilities of the Strike Group are utterly unmatched by the Empire of Corleans- however the fleet has no access to GPS or any navigational aids other than working compasses, which severely inhibits any ability for long range reconnaissance by air and limits the Strike Group to ground-based exploration. The Strike Group Commander has opted to do this in the form of the 1st Composite Reconnaissance Platoon, a force organized from international elements across the fleet. Operating independently and far away from the Essex, they may very well be in over their heels..

The intent of Strike Group Essex is to recontact or return to their home world before they starve out or run out of equipment. Thanks to the fast-acting rationing by the fleet, the resources of the group may yet hold for quite a while, but this will not last forever.

Corlean Trust Territory
Motto: "First in Support"
Established under article 75 of the Charter of the United Nations, the Corlean Trust Territory is the official government responsible for governing the Empire of Corlean. Like in the days of decolonisation, the official idea is to ‘make the area safe for democracy’, to ensure that human rights are in future protected when the people of Corlean are ready to govern themselves. In the absence of either the General Assembly or the Security Council, the decision to create a trust territory unilaterally is of dubious legality, and the same goes for the decision to make major Tavern its governor. However, desperate times call for desperate measures, and it would be better to claim dubious legality than no legality at all.

The Trust Territory is governed via unilateral decree made by major Tavern, although he gets his orders from captain Rogers. The Trust Territory is mainly governed through benign neglect, letting the village elders do as they have done before. The only thing the major interferes with is resource management, making sure the troops are supplied with enough food and water. Slavery and torture have been outlawed, but in the small villages of the region that has not mattered as of yet. The main goal of the trust territory is to supply the mission with much-needed resources.

Ah shit, here we go again.

Saw GATE in the title, and I'm back for another round. I'm still disappointed I didn't have enough time to make the Vietnam Version work, but any excuse to go around the Medieval World with APCs and Assault rifles, kicking ass, taking names, and having a hell of an adventure that leaves nearly everyone emotional scared due to the absolute slaughter brought upon the native people and the realization of the realities that the natives live under, is a good excuse in my book.

Bit disappointed we have to be the Crayon-Eaters this time around, but either way, expect a Gunnery or Staff Sergeant up soon

Though also perhaps expect some Natives as well. I had a medieval fantasy RP I was helping someone make recently fall through some-what, so I'm in the mood for some good ole Medieval Fantasy style court intrigue and adventuring

Glad to have you back, I remember it was a blast back when we RPed back in Bentus' one. Some more insight to the Imperial side of things is always welcome to- never enough of that.

I'll have some character apps for my own characters up sometime in the near future, as well as a player roster added to the OC.

Biography:
Born in 1975 at the tail end of the war Rainier's father had fought in, having enlisted prior to the war's outbreak in '65, and serving throughout the entirety, retiring from the military in 1974 having decided he had seen enough of war for his life time and returned to the town of Seward Alaska where he had been born. Upon settling down in a campaign some miles outside of Seward, he married a woman two years young than himself, who he had previously dated prior to his deployment in Vietnam. In 1975, little over a year after his return home, the Fletcher family gave birth to their first and only son Rainier Fletcher.

Much of Rainier's early childhood was filled with doing the basic chores around the cabin and the house that were needed, such as watching the fire, collecting sticks, eventually chopping wood, and the like. Rainier grew up fast and he grew up tough, never a complainer for he knew no other life, he was raised largely in the woods, save for when he eventually went to school in Seward, his only interactions with others that were his age. Cut from a rough stone he often found himself in contrast with his fellow school mates who had lived together for sometime and were already friends prior to his arrival. He had been home-schooled for sometime, and only entered public school in the fourth grade. However, he was too noted at school as a hard worker, and such was often used as an excuse to balance out the trouble he often got into.

As he grew older the torment he suffered at the hands of his peers generally subdued as he grew more to earn more respect. His forthright behavior and rugged individualist attitude did little to earn him many friends, but it gained him respect among the teachers and students of the school alike. His academic performance began to suffer somewhat at this point, as despite being a hardworking student, he was far from the best student at study, but more so lacked the drive and ambition to dedicate himself to any one area of study. Thus as his high-school career drew to an end, and his father's often times cynical but enjoyable stories of camaraderie in Vietnam, he signed himself up for enlistment with the Marines in the summer of 1993.

Having been a hardworking and rugged individual for most of his life, he excelled in the military, his background in forestry helping as well on the physical side of things. His performance in boot camp was above average and earned him an early promotion to E-2 straight out of basic rather than E-1. He would spend the next four years in the Marines being largely uneventful with the Liberation of Kuwait ending just a few years prior to his enlistment, yet that would change in 1999 when at the rank of a Corporal he was transferred over to the 15th MEU for deployment to the Philippines to assist in Operation Stabilise, a Humanitarian Operation. Not long after that, the group was called up for the initial deployments to liberate Afghanistan from control of hostile forces. His tour there was relatively uneventfully, aside from combat, though towards the end of his tenure in country he was award the bronze star action during a convoy ambush. He would also receive the promotion to Sergeant for his conduct.

After his time in Afghanistan he was briefly transferred out the middle east, only to return less than year later during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. It was at this that the highlights of his career began to show. He would participate in both battles of Fallujah, experiencing some of the worst fighting in the early years of the war in Iraq. In the aftermath of the two battles he had earned and addition Bronze Star and a Purple heart from each battle respectively. Leading soldiers in a brutal hand to hand fight through the city streets which climaxed in a two day and one night defense of a battered city block lead to the awarding of his Purple Heart after a stray fragmentation lit up his legs like fireworks and a bullet caught him in the thigh. Regardless he continued to fight for the remainder of the night and into the second day before being relieved by another unit. Despite his injuries he helped load the remainder of the wounded onto the med-evac transports, and had to nearly be tackled to be convinced to leave the remainder of his men and seek treatment for his wounds claiming he "hadn't yet returned the favor" and was eventually treated for his wounds. From 2005 onward he drifted between other duties and tours in Iraq and saw limited action. That was until the troop surge in 2007 when large counter-insurgence campaigns were launched and his tour in-country was extended by an additional few months. During this time, he secured a third Bronze Star for heroism involving leading a small squad of Marines to rescue a stranded platoon during a rough counter-insurgency operation in a small town. He was a Gunnery Sergeant at the time. As the fighting in Iraq changed, so did his mission, though he continued to serve with distinction until the removal of most troops from Iraq in 2011. Though considered for the position of a Master or First Sergeant, Fletcher initially declined such on proficiency reports. This was until 2014 when he finally, at the request of a fellow peer, decided to put his name in the running for First Sergeant. Though getting on in his age, his service record granted him the promotion a year later in 2015. His career was largely uneventfully from that point on until 2019 when he was assigned to the Marine Detachment in the Essex Group. His experience, skill and persona was called upon to help ready both the Marines of the detachment and the soldiers of foreign nations as well. After the events of the warp-storm he, due to being one of the more senior NCOs on-board, was selected to serve as the acting Platoon Sergeant for the 1st CRP, a position he had spent a large portion of his military career at.

Biography:
Arthur Rogers was born second of three children in a working-class household in Pensacola, Florida. From an early age, he was enamored by the activities of the adjacent Pensacola NAS, and grew up with the dream to fly for the Navy. An above-average student and an above-average athlete, Rogers competed for, and earned, a nomination to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. However, during his initial medical examinations, his dream of performing flight duties for the Navy was dashed when he failed to meet proper eyesight requirements. The undecided man considered transferring to the Marines as an infantry officer, but eventually graduated the academy in 1987 with average grades as a surface warfare Ensign.

He served primarily aboard destroyers and was present as a Lieutenant during the Gulf War. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and served aboard the USS Ramage as executive officer. When he was promoted to Commander, he served as the Captain of USS John Paul Jones for a few years before he received a transfer aboard the USS Essex in 2012. He assumed the duties of Executive Officer in December of that year, and was promoted to Captain in late 2016 following satisfactory reviews of his performance, and was selected as the captain of Essex in January of 2017 following the previous captain's retirement. He has served in that capacity for over two years with faith and distinction.

Personality: CAPT Rogers is a man who is content with his lot in life. Having lead a comfortable and rewarding career as a Naval officer, Rogers does his best to bring the dedication, competency and passion that is required for a leader of men. He is a man that appears friendly, but remains professional and formal in most instances. When it comes to conducting his duties, while he prefers to have the consent and cooperation of those beneath and beside him, he will not shy away from a course he sees as the better one if he is unsupported.

Biography:
Micheal Graff was born as one boy out of a family of 4- all of his siblings female- in a white-collar home in Rome, New York. 4 years after he was born, his father achieved a Master's degree in finance and took up a position with a bank in New York City. Micheal and his family moved to Long Island and lived incredibly well off. His life was comfortable and he enjoyed frequent vacations either to the New York countryside, or to a timeshare in southern Florida, in his early youth. He went to private schools in the city and had a fund paying for his college fully filled by his eighth birthday.

However, Micheal's family was struck incredibly hard by the disasters of September 11th. His mother, an office worker, was killed when the South Tower collapsed, and his father was comatose after sustaining injuries relating to the attack. The children moved in with his father's grandparents back in Rome. Micheal's grandfather, a Marine himself who had served in Korea, took the lead in their care. The stories he told young Micheal by the fireside in his old home, the relics hanging on the wall, inspired Micheal from an early age. While his father eventually recovered, he decided that the children being raised by their grandparents would be best as his father was both physically inabled and mentally unstable following the loss of his wife. Growing up in Rome, by habit and by effort his grandfather shied him away from the cityboy lifestyle he had been raised on since, and often took him hunting and fishing in the woods beyond Rome.

He had an average childhood beyond that- went to public highschool, played sports, made friends, had his first kiss- but his enamor for the Marine Corps never faded. On his 17th birthday, he walked into the recruiter's office with the full intent to enlist his life away, but was stopped by his grandfather, who refused to sign for him. Instead, he made Micheal agree to go to college first and enlist as an officer using the money already in his college fund. Micheal applied to, and gained acceptance, to the University of Rochester, and became active with the college's Navy ROTC. He graduated with a degree in business and marketing, and shortly after college, was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant.

Newly-minted Lieutenant Graff attended TBS and graduated among the top of his class. He was sought after actively by a variety of units in the Marines- but elected to go with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marines. He deployed to Afghanistan with the 1st RB, and following this first deployment he was promoted to First Lieutenant. The deployment to the Pacific with the 13th MEU was Graff's second.

Following the devastation the warp-storm caused, Graff's track record and potential as a leader had him nominated, and selected, by Captain Rogers to lead the 1st Composite Reconnaissance Platoon. Along with a mixed complement of other personnel across the fleet, he is the commanding officer of Earth's first otherwordly explorers.

Personality: Friendly and relaxed usually in nature, he is loyal to a fault and does his best to embody the traits of a military officer- traits that he is still grasping. Basically trained and only with a little experience as far as combat goes, he is competent in the execution of his duties. He operates by treating his men the same as he treats everyone else, and works on the assumption of their cohesion. He, however, will take the leadership of his unit above all and enforce discipline where it is necessary, though his application may be over or underhanded at times.

Non-Required Information

Past Occupations, Positions, Roles, Ranks and Achievements:
  • Graduate of Rochester College in Rochester, NY
  • Graduated near top of his class from The Basic School

Equipment:
  • Primary Weapon: M27 IAR, with mounted Trijicon ACOG sight, foregrip, and laser sight.
  • Secondary Weapon: M9A1 Beretta handgun
  • Additional Munitions: Carries 3 frag, 3 smoke, and 2 "flashbang" grenades.
  • Uniform Equipment: Wears USMC-standard equipment as is issued to the 1st Reconnaissance Batallion, including the Scalable Plate Carrier, Enhanced Combat Helmet, and woodland MARPAT FROG uniform.
  • Misc. & Other Stuff: Carries his iPhone 5 in his lefthand pocket, and a small silver wrist pendant with an image of his three sisters.

Moral Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Likes: His family and home, the New York Yankees, being outdoors, cars, hunting and weightlifting.

Biography:
I was born upon the Capital of Caeven in the midst of the warm months on the continent some twenty and piece years ago. My father had originally came to the land of Caeven as a Knight in-service to his majesty the King of Corlea to fight in a border war to capture the Southern Peninsula during the Wars of Conquest in Osjio. My father had been a Knight for some time at that point and was greatly revered among the Royal Order or so I have been told by my uncle and friend's of my father, himself rarely talking about such matters he deemed trivial, though now I can understand much of why he would do such. Having rendered a great service to the Empire, but wounded in the process, he was granted the Title of Marquess and given the land that would be known as Caeven in the coming years. Sometime after this it seemed he married a young Knight of Osjio who had been native to the Caeven territory and fought against my father in the wars. Seems my father truly was an fast working man, for no more than two years after he had married, and only three after the end of the Wars, I was born as an only child into the world. Much of my childhood was spent among the villagers of Varn rather than my own family. The Capital was little more than the largest of the small towns that were littered across the Mark and one of the few still standing it would seem. I grew up in the shadow of this rebirth of the territory from the struggling frontier land to a prospering Imperial Realm. My father was a working man by birth, having spent most of his life as a Knight and a Warrior fighting day in and day out, and thus he often spent much more time in the fields with the farmers and in town with the carpenters than he did in the manor with his aide. Not that I blame him, I certainly see the appeal of such a life, as it was the one I was raised in. The time I was not learning lessons of swordsmanship under the guidance of my father, I was among the fields with the farmers, on the docks with the fisherman or in the woods with the foresters, learning skills and helping where ever there was a place "youthful labor" to be of help. It was an enjoyable time, for the woods and the rivers of the Frontier were far more enjoyable to the closed up Manor of which our family called home. I suppose it was such a life that I lived until the age of sixteen, the age of a squire, when my father decided it was time I fully begin to take on the responsibilities of a leader of men. As such, I was sent off to the Imperial Capital first for a ball to be held by many high ranking officials, my father being invited for he was once a Royal Knight, and then it was off to the Officer's Academy.

The ball was certianly an interesting experience, but one I would have rather done without. I am as much out of place among those fanciful events as a fisherman would be upon laying the foundations of house. Nevertheless I came across a few nobles whom were of my age and interacted with them loosely. In comparison to the Officer's Academy it was a welcome time. Though I suppose among the ranks of nobility I never truly found a place; a brash and forthright young man from the Frontier without an ounce of noble blood within his veins or a trace of diplomacy upon his words was certainly an odd one out. I did however manage to carve a few comrades from the ordeal in the early days, mainly those who were raised in my standing, as there were Frontiersmen among them, or those who held more liberal and enlightened views than many of our classmates. The greatest change came, however, when in our second year of the academy we were called away to the Frontier to deal with renewed wars with the Southern Regions of Osjio against the force known as the Illiac Alliance. Myself, I had previously left a month or so earlier to the news that my father had finally subsumed to his wounds he had suffered during the Wars of Conquest and various smaller engagements since that time, and I was poised to see the burial and clear up business with my Uncle who was the de-facto leader of the Realm at the time. I, however, as my luck would have it arrived to a largely deserted Realm. It would seem that my Uncle had gathered the men-at-arms of the Caeven and set forth towards the war. As such, I returned to Varn to settle the last of the matters my Uncle had left and then hasted to meet within and the rest of Caeven's forces. Thus I only did what seemed natural and I gathered what men I could and found employment as hired hands in the war, as a war-band of Mercenaries to assist in the war effort. Gradually we were absorbed into a company of men at arms, and as one of the seemingly more senior men among the group was elected to lead as a party leader, and upon the death of our Captain, was elected to his post. With a company of men at my disposal I went about the Frontier engaging all manner of enemy from rebel to bandit to regular to mercenary and even some demihuman groups we happened across. By the time the forces had been reorganized for the counter-offensives, I had already tripled my command to a battalion and was beginning to gain renown among the forces involved in the battle. Towards the end of the war I managed to acquire the rank of Knight-Lord though I commanded a much larger force than that, for I had brought my forces to the siege of a large town, rallied our fleeing allies, forcibly removed the Knight-Lord in charge of them and took over the reins to reclaim a major port town in southern Averill. It would seem a friend of mine whom I had a met during the war and [unbeknownst to either of us at the time] was a fellow student at the Academy had been relaying my exploits to someone in the Capital and for it gained myself some ranks, including a royal citation and an Honorary Royal Knight's rank for the liberation of the Port City of Abellum. I accepted the honor of course, but it the ceremony took quite a turn when my Uncle, who as a Marquess and Lord-Commander during the Wars was in attendance revealed my identity as the son of the late Marquess of Caeven. Despite it I was still awarded for my service, albeit and unorthodox one for my friends at the Academy had all been granted the rank of Knight-Lord at the onset of the war. Having enjoyed a celebration proper for men of the fighting breed with my new found Companion, I returned to Caeven to begin the rebuilding of the the Realm for the next five years following the end of major hostilities.

Personality: Rowan is quite a relaxed and carefree man, though on occasion those not familiar with him have had a tendency to label him as aloof. In reality he is a deeply observant man who finds immense pleasure among those he considers his people and companions, laughing and spending time with them as if they were family, giving off a steadfast and solid, yet warm aura that refuses to let you leave once you get involved with him on a personal level.

Notes:

~ Imperial Domain of Osjio ~ The land to the South-East of the Imperial Capital was slowly invaded through a variety of Expeditions and Conquests that eventually resulted in much of the Northern Ends of the South-Eastern Peninsula falling under the control of the Empire and being claimed as an Imperial Domain. The Territories had originally refused Vassal-ship under Empire and were subsequently invaded. Those lords who allied themselves to the Empire in the ensuing wars were granted the right to retain rank under the new Imperial Rule, many becoming Counts, which others who rebelled were largely replaced by Military Governors [Nobles], Former Outer-Lords looking to expand their territories, or various Knights or Lord Knights who had fought in the conflict and were granted titles. At the end of the Osjii Campaigns, the lands found themselves divided largely between Ten Realms, each overseen by Ten Counts, four of which were given the Title of Marquess as they were on the Frontier Border. Of the Ten Counts, an additional two Former Outer-Lords gained additional territory in Osjii Lands, Four of the Ten are former Lords to joined the side of the Empire in the Wars of Conquest, and the remaining four are a mix of Knight Lords and Appointed Military Governors.

~ Realm of Caeven ~ The land of Caeven sits as the border nation between much of the Osjii Domain, the Kingdoms of the Illiac Alliance, and the wild-lands to the North, sharing a border with all three. The nation falls near the gulf created by Tumaren and Averill, which occupies more or less the entirety of the Western Coast of the Western most finger of the Illiac Peninsula, and [Caeven] reaches as far as the edge of the mountains to the North-East. The nation is one largely filled with woodlands and fields, with a vast majority of the former and many cities and settlements falling near the coast. As one approaches closer to the mountains they will find more sparsely populated farmland and open fields as the land slowly shifts to the grassland valleys of the Rabbit Tribes. Culturally, the land is very much Osjii, though certain Imperial ideals have worked their way in over time. The Realm boasts a rugged and hard-working people, with many in the forestry, farming, or fishing business, and while not possessing a robust industrial or artisan developments, they are known for exporting vasts amounts of craftsman goods as well as being renowned as far as the Imperial Capital and beyond for their Alcohol production. As a frontier nation, they maintain one of the larger standing armies among Imperial Realms and are occasionally called upon to lead Expeditions into the Frontier, due to the army also being experienced from the Illiac Wars and Skirmishes in the past decade. The nation, being one of the larger on the Frontier, and with a reputation for fair and hard working people has earned friendly relations with many of their neighbors, in particular Averill, though due to some of it's more liberal policies and largely autonomous state, it has tended to strike a bad chord with many of the Inner Lords and those in the Capital

~ Illiac Wars ~ Some two Decades after the end of the Wars of Conquest in Osjio, a secondary series of conflicts began to arise in the border region. Tribes and nation that rested on the Frontier, began striking up a habit of raiding the border and frontier villages and towns of many in of the Frontier Realms. The problems were especially rough in those regions that bordered the Southern Peninsula, which had yet to completely fall under Imperial Domain, with the Realms of Caeven and Averill taking the worst of the battles being on the frontier facing the Southern Nations. The nations of the Southern Peninsula eventually formed a alliance under the banner of a nation known as Illiac, attempting to fully push both Averill and Caeven from the shores of the Peninsula. They were joined by various other tribes across the newly established Imperial Frontier, including though only in rumors members from the Rabbit Tribes. The intital parts of the War, or rather the First War, was largely defensive based for the Frontier Realms with many losses of land, particularly Averill who lost much of it's Southern Lands in the intinal conflict. The First War lasted for two years, after which a lull in the battle was found as the Illiac Alliance attempted to restore order to the captured lands and the Frontier Realms began pulling in more men-at-arms, notably members from the Royal Officers Academy, whom were to lead forces into battle under the rank of "Knight-Lord." A year after the unofficial ceasefire, the Illiac offensive resumed, however, this time a newly prepared and reinforced Frontier Army managed to push back the Illiac invaders and begin a counter offensive. Three years later due to power struggle in the Illiac Alliance, a series of Illiac losses, and a terrible winter on both sides, an official end to the war was declared. Lost territory was returned and reparations were divided up among the Frontier Realms. In the aftermath of the war, attempts were made, notably be Averill and Caeven, to strengthen relations with the former Alliance nations, which has produced a mixed bag of results.

~ Free Knights' Pact ~ A pact made by several younger Lords and Knights of various social ranking and status who attended the Royal Officer's Academy together. Notably, a large portion of the members who agreed to the pact were the Junior Officers who served in the Illiac Wars, though the pact was made before then. Originally the Pact had been formed between but a few Officers who grew close during their time in the Academy but was expanded due to the events of the Illiac War and it's aftermath. The Pact was simple in nature, stating that if there was ever a time that any one member of the pact in need, the others would do all that they could to come to aid of their old comrade, and that the bonds they had made at that time would remain equal between one another regardless of time or rank as representation of the trust and love they share for one another.

As you might tell, I had a lot of energy and thoughts on the Native Character, which I figured would be better to get out in the moment, rather than push it aside to brain-storm the Gunnery Sergeant. Nevertheless, both the Native [the bio] and the Gunnery App should be finished tomorrow, but it's getting late here

Also, where exactly have the Earth Forces established Horizon Station?

EDIT: I also sense a nice Captain Cool and Sergeant Rough relationship forming from the Lt and the Gunny

~ Realm of Caeven ~ The land of Caeven sits as the border nation between much of the Osjii Domain, the Kingdoms of the Forlan Alliance, and the wild-lands to the North, sharing a border with all three. The nation falls near the gulf created by Tumaren and Averill, which occupies more or less the entirety of the Western Coast of the Western most finger of the Forlan Peninsula, and [Caeven] reaches as far as the edge of the mountains to the North-East. As a frontier nation, they maintain one of the larger standing armies among Imperial Realms and are occasionally called upon to lead Expeditions into the Frontier, due to the army also being experienced from the Forlan Wars and Skirmishes in the past decade.

~ Forlan Wars ~ Some two Decades after the end of the Wars of Conquest in Osjio, a secondary series of conflicts began to arise in the border region. The nations of the Southern Peninsula eventually formed a alliance under the banner of a nation known as Forlan, attempting to fully push both Averill and Caeven from the shores of the Peninsula. The First War lasted for two years, after which a lull in the battle was found as the Forlan Alliance attempted to restore order to the captured lands and the Frontier Realms began pulling in more men-at-arms, notably members from the Royal Officers Academy, whom were to lead forces into battle under the rank of "Knight-Lord." A year after the unofficial ceasefire, the Forlan offensive resumed, however, this time a newly prepared and reinforced Frontier Army managed to push back the Forlan invaders and begin a counter offensive. Three years later due to power struggle in the Forlan Alliance, a series of Forlan losses, and a terrible winter on both sides, an official end to the war was declared.

Notably, a large portion of the members who agreed to the pact were the Junior Officers who served in the Forlan Wars, though the pact was made before then. Originally the Pact had been formed between but a few Officers who grew close during their time in the Academy but was expanded due to the events of the Forlan War and it's aftermath.

Excellent app for the Marquess, NUC. I assume you’ll have your bio in soon enough, but for now I’ll accept.
As far as NS Horizon goes, it’s essentially right next to Trisondil. Trisondil is a fishing town that was a farming town, so the large and wide open areas adjacent to the village are being used to build the station. Trisondil is the village Essex first uncovered, and where the knights were shot dead. Strike Group Essex is moored close off-shore.

Ah, thank you. I'll have it finished tomorrow, along with the other.

I just noticed that detail in the OP. What I was referring to more where it is relative to everything else [Alnus, Italica, and the Capital]. I was wondering if it was in Tumaren, one of the small islands off the coast, the large island to the south or someplace else on the continent.

Corleans isn’t the same geographically as GATE’s nation is. I don’t have a formal map established, but Trisondil sits on a far peninsula a fair bit to the south of the capital.

Though you do bring up a good point. If I can’t figure one out shortly, nothing’s stopping us from retroactively using GATE’s map. It’d still be roughly south, anyway.

Good work, NUC. 1stSgt Fletcher is accepted as 1st CRP's Platoon Sergeant. I'll have the roster updated shortly.

In other news, I have the discord up and running for the most part. Link is live in the OP. And for my third and final app at least for the Essex Strike Group, our on-station CAS:

Strike Group Essex: Personnel File

Appearance Image & Description:

Biography: Emily Lemonier was born as an only child, the daughter of a Marine Corps LtCol in command of the nearby MCAS Kanehoe Bay. Growing up engrossed in Marine aviation, it was only natural that the military brat Emily gain an interest in it. She helped establish (and later led) her high school's JROTC unit through her time in high school, and was accepted to study at the University of Hawaii in a law undergraduate program. While in college and with financial assistance from her family, she was able to undergo exploratory flight training, and earned her Private Pilot's license at 19.

Following her graduation, Emily applied and was selected for Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, as an air contract applicant as her commissioning source. Graduating through OCS and later TBS with average grades, with her flight experience, she was able to succeed relatively well during her initial flight training with the Marines. Following the completion of basic flight school, she was selected to continue training on tactical aircraft- from Texan to Goshawk, and Goshawk to- to her absolute surprise- being selected as one of the first female pilots of the brand-new F-35B Lightning. Assigned to VMFA-211 "Wake Island Avengers", she completed her flight qualification training for the 35 in 2018, shortly after which she was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant.

Emily gained the favor of her detachment commander as she became active within her squadron for her almost natural leader-like aura, and ability to adapt to the multiple challenges they threw her way. So when VMFA-211 was chosen to be the detachment deploying with the 13th MEU's Aviation Combat Element, Emily was chosen to lead the detachment, despite her more junior stature as an officer. Having earned the affectionate callsign of "Maverick" in recognition of her fiery and enthusiastic attitude, she has taken it upon herself to lead her Avengers to the heavens beyond. And as she finds herself in a new world- she may just get that chance.

Personality: Emily is a greenhorn officer and has little real command experience, the majority of her experience deriving from her training as a Marine officer. What she lacks in skill and knowledge she makes up for with her enthusiasm and willingness to learn, which garners the admiration of her fellow pilots. While in combat she enters a zone of decision and command authority, in more relaxed scenarios she is cheerful and warm to those around her. She has a habit, however, of taking more criticism and backtalk than an officer her status should.

Bruh. I am here for GATE-inspired things.

I'm assuming that, like my GATE RP tried to do, the fights with the Empire won't be a completely one-sided roflstomp?

That's yet to be decided. The Essex has nowhere near the capability to project force like the JGSDF did, and although the Empire can't really match the fleet's technology, the fleet doesn't have enough men or equipment to do as it pleases like they did in Gate. Best they can do for now is big shows of force. :)

Well, in my mind when it comes to my native characters they've already got the image of the "Great Grey Fleet" from the rumors that have spread around after the battle in the South. I think of the Empire general being in the shoes of Japan in the 1850s; A mysterious unknown fleet has suddenly appeared off the coast and in our case just captured an small feudal state in a single day with a handful of men, and there's very little intel on them, not to mention such a sudden appearance. Once more clear details begin to appear in the Capital, there will likely be a response.

Now, I doubt we're gonna see something like the mess of Alnus hill from the source material and Bentus' RP for a few reasons. For starts, the Essex Group doesn't really possess the logistics to deal with a huge battle like the one at Alnus; Secondly, the Crown is [hopefully] not as stupid as the one in the Original to send like half of it's army against a foe that destroyed it's entire Vanguard in what was probably a day; Thirdly, we're not taking over some Holy Site and establishing a massive base there with [presumably] hundreds if not thousands of troops, we're holding a small fiefdom so the Empire has no real reason to must such a large force to deal with the Essex Group; Fourth, due to the rumors it's likely the Empire doesn't have a good idea of what Essex Group is, or even what it's goals are. It's not the clearly message presented by establishing a base on a Holy Site, so they likely want to "feel us out" so to speak

I'm not the one to decide this, as I am not the OP, but I foresee limited engagements on behalf of the Essex Group. They will probably be acting like a true recon force this time, and largely forgo Recon-by-Force, as we've done in the previous RPs. Every bullet and every drop of fuel is a precious commodity that can't be wasted so we can't just go around kick ass and taking names. We have to pick and choose our battles as well as when we use our Mech and Light Transportation. When we do engage the enemy, it will no doubt be a one sided put down like we've seen in the previous RPs but nowhere on the same scale. There won't be made minute style fire-fights, or holding positions in the opening throwing 'nades and cannon rounds at the slightest movement in the woods. We'll be forced to play it smart, setting up ambushes and doing hit and run tactics. Most importantly, we'll have to play on both our fear factor and heroic deeds to get by. So while direct combat will likely be more of the same, the intermediate such as maneuver, infiltration and interactions with natives both militarily and civil, will be much more reserved and tactical

That's just my two cents

You're not totally out of the wrong. Unlike in GATE's scenario, the Imperials have zero idea what they are dealing with and nor have they begun the months of massive military mobilization they would have needed to attack Alnus Hill. However it's not exactly like Essex and her subordinates are going to be crawling under the dirt. Essex is relatively well supplied for a MEU considering the attached replenishment ship, and the task force is not above performing operations that might be considered 'showy'. While of course the strike group cannot fight the entire Empire on its own, they have the tactical flexibility to pick and choose their battles. In the event that the 1st CRP needs to hold down a position or defend a certain point, they have 6 powerful fixed-wing aircraft and 7-8 attack capable helicopters, and this is not including the (albeit limited due to targeting difficulties) potent firepower of the fleet sitting idle offshore.

This is all very circumstantial and an interesting part about this RP. The Strike Group, no doubt, will aim to avoid a fixed battle if at all possible. But by the same token, they have a few cards up their sleeves- not ones they can play often, but I'm sure that in the event the Imperials experience the utter decimation cluster munitions might cause to their tightly-packed formations, they would think twice about attacking the force- regardless of whether or not that was the last cluster bomb aboard the fleet.

Also to keep in perspective- a MEU is capable of 'sustained' operations for 15 days in theatre. The MEU is not conducting anything that could be really considered combat operations. With rationing- and the additional supplies available in addition to a limited operational scope- it's not like they're totally powerless. But the MEU, obviously, cannot survive the full wrath of Imperial might and win by that same token. Both sides will have to play it smart.

I see. Definitely any type of Alnus confrontation, at least at this point, would be a suicide mission for either side, with Essex exhausting their supplies and the Empire loosing a massive security force alla Iraq War style.

The wiggle room, so to speak, on Essex side is nice too. Should make things a bit more interesting, cause you know it's not GATE without Ride of the Valkyrie type "shows of force." Though, I still think it'd be pretty nice to pull of a Teutoberg forest somewhere along the line

(This minus the beard)

Biography: Luke Bell was born on April 18, 1983, his mother a physician and father a Naval officer. He had a fairly normal childhood, apart from the moving incumbent on being a military brat, and did well in school, hoping to follow in his mother's footsteps and become a physician. Those plans changed however in his senior year of high school on September 11, 2001. As soon as he graduated he enlisted in the Navy, and went on to serve two tours in Afghanistan as a Navy Corpsman attached to a Marine unit.

After his tour of duty, he decided to take advantage of his GI bill benefits to pursue his old dream of becoming a physician. After attending and graduating from the University of Virginia, he was accepted to the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, and decided to stick with the Navy to pay his tuition by signing on for their Health Professions Scholarship Program. After graduating and finishing his internship, he decided to take a ship billet on his GMO tour and served for two years on the USS San Jacinto, after which he completed a military residency in Emergency Medicine, then a fellowship in Global Health before deciding to return to the fleet.

He served as a medical officer aboard the USS Essex for two years before being promoted to Chief Medical Officer aboard the vessel following the retirement of its former CMO. He served in that position for four months before the events of May 12th thrust him and the rest of Strike Group Essex into a situation quite unlike any he had ever prepared for...

Personality: Dr. Bell is a dedicated physician who cares greatly about the men and women of Strike Group Essex and patients under his care.
