Bibles in Hotel Rooms

Postby San Lumen » Fri Jun 14, 2019 2:30 pm

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business ... abf1daa32e

In many hotel rooms in the United States and increasingly in other countries one will often come across a Bible in the nightstand by the bed.

For those who are unaware the Bible was more than likely placed there by the Gideon organization a religious group founded in 1898 in consisting of traveling Christian businessmen in Boscobel, Wisconsin. In 1908 they starting placing Bibles in hotel rooms the first being the Superior Hotel in Superior, Montana.. The reason for the project was they saw it as gracious act towards a follow traveler and to provide Bibles to those who need it.

Whenever a new hotel is opened the Gideons present the hotel with enough Bibles for each room in the hotel. The Bibles are payed for by churches and organizations that support their mission

In recent years though some hotels have stopped placing Bibles in their rooms which is their right but others have started doing it in more brands such as Starwood of the brand's of Marriott the worlds largest hotel chain.

There has also been some objection by atheist groups claiming its forcing a religion or violates the first amendment which i fail to see how.

A growing trend is one can also find other religious books in hotel rooms such as Quran, Book of Mormon or the Torah.

I have no problem with their being religious books in a hotel room. In fact I often look to see if their is a Bible in the nightstand when I stay at a hotel. To those who have an issue my response is no one is making you read it but its there for people who need it which is the purpose of the Gideon Association

What's your take on this NSG and the work of the Gideon Association?

Personally I'd like it if Qur'ans were in hotels as well as Bibles.

I'm an atheist, and I really don't care if a bible is left in my room. I just won't read it.

Yes it is. Marriott recently started doing it in some of their newly acquired brands such as Starwood.

This. It's frankly childish to be bothered by a bible.

This is not a regular thing around Europe.

I've had it once or twice. I go to the reception and say that they should clean better because the previous guest left their book in my room.

And when they try to explain it to me, I just nod and go, no no no, here you go.

And then go back to my regular schedule :)

I see no problem, the solution is simple. If you don't like it, don't read it.

Because it could actually be the previous guest's :)

Like I said, not a thing around Europe. Maybe once every three years I encounter this. Thus I err on the side of previous guest.

And why get bothered by it? It's just a book. It's not going to grow legs and arms and beat you to death just because you're not a Christian. Leave it alone.

To me, it just is, it’s weird to me how out of all things generally found in a hotel room a religious text is tucked away in a drawer.

I think it's a good idea, especially as someone who doesn't always remember to bring my Bible with me. If someone doesn't want to have the Bible in their room, they don't have to read it. Other religious books should also be in hotel rooms, too.

Like I said in the OP it was more than likely donated by the Gideon Association.

It can be seen as "ignorant" to some people and can cause a big commotion. Not a big deal to me.
