ISSUE IDEA: Snowed Under (Again, Yes, Again)

Postby Australian rePublic » Sun Jun 09, 2019 9:47 pm

I'll get it right some day...

Thanks primarily to Jutsa's suggestions...

[title] Snowed Under

[desc] Whilst @@NAME@@ receives an average of one snow fall every century, a polar vortex has caused the country to receive multiple snow events this year alone. As last week's snow storm was particularly heavy, the lack of snow removal infrastructure has caused disruption all over the nation, closing schools, offices and trade centres. Your citizenry is now requesting snow removal.

[validity] "good" weather

[option] "I got my first day off in 5 days, but I'm stuck with me damned kids!" moans @@RANDOMNAME@@, seemingly oblivious to @@HIS@@ child who has grabbed the priceless vase on your desk. "Then I had to waste another day to come here and complain. How we supposed to relax when the kids can't go to school? Snow ploughs can be used in hail too. The national government should give us snow ploughs!"
[effect] tropical cities are granted larger budget for snow removal than flood mitigation

[option] "You call this a snow storm?" laughs mountain@@MAN@@ @@RANDOMNAME@@, “Up in the mountains, we used to walk through twice as much snow, bare foot, for two hours! Today's @@DENONYMADJECTIVE@@ need to toughen up!”
[effect] 1 metre of snow is considered too insufficient to justify snow removal

[option] "Ze problem here seems to be zat ve're entering ze next ice age.” Suggests @@RANDOMNAME@@, a crackpot climatologist, “However, mine data shows zat if ve varm ze Earth sufficiently, ven the ice age will be delayed indeffinetely. Ve just need to pump more of the CO2 into the atmosphere and promote ze glabal varming!”
[effect] citizens are fined if their appliances are too eco-friendly

I don't usually answer issues or post on these, so not sure how much help my suggestions are, but:
1) pretty sure in the last option, finned should be fined. Unless your citizens are becoming fish. :p
2) "10 centimetres of snow is considered too insufficient to justify snow removal" -> given NS's tendency to exaggerate, I'd personally say something like 10 metres, but that's just my opinion. :p

I'm not sure if this was intentional, but 'sufficiently' (in the last option) is spelt with an 'e'. Similarly, 'indefinitely'.

'[Had] caused disruption' probably should be 'has caused destruction'. Also, I would suggest changing 'child who grabbed the priceless vase' into the pastpresent perfect: 'child who has grabbed the priceless vase'. Usually 'plow' would be spelt 'plough' in Australian/Cth English, which would match your spelling of 'centimetres'.

Thanks. Fixed based on your suggestions. I didn't bother creating a new draft for this one

Good weather seems subjective here. For people that live in Mexico, 70 degrees is mediocre, whilst 70 degrees in Norway is an entirely different story. I also roleplay as a nordic country, but have a good weather stat, so I feel the first sentence encroaches a bit on player autonomy.

Edit: finned?

Actually, both Mexico and Norway use the Celsius scale, where 70 degrees is lethally hot.

How about changing @NAME@ to 'isolated region of @NAME@'? After all, issues appear to be free to create tropical rainforests and isolated islands for nations that roleplay as freezing tundras or land-locked dictatorships.

Edit: finned?

"Good" weather is a very subjective thing. For example, a ski resort may consider a heavy snowstorm to be "good weather", a person driving down a remote rural road with a single snow plough, not so much. But, fine, they're two different places, what about the same place? A tourost maybe happy about the lacl of rain during his beach vacation, a farmer suffering through drought, not so much. But who cares about tourists? A man at home may be happy about the snow when he's sitting at home, in front of the fire place, but that might not be so enthusiastic the next night when attending the football. Unfortunately, however, NS only has one measure of weather, whereby more sunlight=good weather, and less sunlight=bad weather. All this does is tell us whether @@NAME@@ is a desert or rainforest (unless you take pollution into account, which, fine). It's not the best measurement system, but it's the only one we got, unfortunately

The whole country, mate, the whole country. I tried to do different parts of the country before, but it didn't really work

I would recommend against using units in the effect line because ns has a metricism/no metricism policy. I would instead recommend knee deep or something to that effect.

Metric units are always fine, as the policy only refers to metricism being either a national standard, or not a national standard. It is never banned.

There's also plenty of precedent for metric measurements in existing issues.

I really like this one. I'd just suggest changing 10 centimetres to 1 metre because of NS's use of exaggeration.
Poland-Lithuania, but it's partly Japanese, Spanish and English, is socialist as well as monarchist, had colonial holdings, all of which survived the partitions, but doesn't control its original land.

Thanks Windows, CWA and JNI!

Changed to a metre. I didn't bother with a new draft, because it was too minor an edit

The premise to me seems a bit thin.

This...

Your citizenry is now requesting snow removal.

is basically this...

[desc] Heavy snow fell, you weren't ready.

Doesn't seem like enough to support an issue there.
