Welcome to the Parliament of Saint Hilda!

What is this?
This is a character-driven RP in which we roleplay as politicians in a fictional nation. This RP, now the NS Parliament, has origins in the former NSG Senate. We have two simple starting guidelines:

1. We are the island nation of Saint Hilda, located in the northern Lesser Antilles near Guadeloupe.
2. A parliamentary system of government is being established, taken from Sweden, from which we just gained independence and with which we share a monarch.

The rest is up to the players! In this RP, we will legislate and politick, ally and backstab, and so much more! It is your choice what your character will be. Prominent and outspoken? Shady and quiet? Progressive? Conservative? Fascist? Communist? Centrist? Government? Opposition? Crossbencher? Journalist? Activist? The list goes on!

As soon as you submit you application, unless rejected, you become a Member of the (imaginary) Parliament of Saint Hilda (or Sankta Hilda in Swedish). You can then feel free to begin participating in the RP. You can do things like drafting a bill, voting on bills, and joining or creating a political party.

Where does it all go on?
We have four threads. There's this one, for applications, creating/joining parties, and all OOC discussion about our RP. There's the Chamber, where bills are debated, amended and voted upon. There's the Office, where bills are presented, discussed before they reach the Chamber, and kept before and after going to the Chamber. There's Life Outside, where all RP that happens outside the Chamber (campaigning, news stories, daily life, etc) goes on. Finally, if you want to flesh out your characters, use our Character Database in Forum 7. Any other threads that may be created also go in Forum 7. Our official Discord server can be found here.

Who's in charge?
Our administrators run the RP and their decisions are final.

We don't have strict rules, other than that godmodding is prohibited and our admins are fully in charge.
In the case of rule violations or unacceptable conduct, the offender will be warned. After two admin warnings within a month, disciplinary actions may escalate to a suspension or eventually a ban.

Marius Forsman strode into the Parliamentary chamber with pride, excited to get down to the real business of building a nation of prosperity and progress. He had swept his home constituency Ölhusby by a wide margin, more thanks to his very high personal popularity in the region than his party policies, a popularity built up over more than a decade as a teacher, a volunteer, and an organizer. Centrum-Progressiv had seen fairly poor results in most of the nation, not really competing with the powerful voting blocs of the National People's Party, People's Labour, or the Liberals.

Marius wouldn't be entering Parliament with the backing of party compatriots at his sides, but this did not bother him much. He, and several other centrally placed parties, were in an ideal position to form the periphery of a government. A strong term, where Marius could make his name and his party known nationally, could see him return later among many allies.

Strategy was not at the forefront of his mind at this moment, however. There was tomorrow for that. Today, he would sit in the first Parliament of an independent Saint Hilda. Little would be immediately different of course, the Caribbean island had had devolved legislative powers for a century. But nonetheless, this was now the legislative chamber of a sovereign state.

Marius found his labelled seat, somewhere in the middle of the mob of minor parties that had clawed their way into representation this term. He sat, somewhat early, and went over his notes for the first day, humming softly to himself.

Sven Sköldsvik walked into the chamber after his re-election in the 2019 election. After winning his hometown of Hagalund in the 2014 by-election, he had only increased his majority since, from an initial 2% majority, to an 11% majority, to his current 21% majority.

He had been proud to serve his hometown as an MP for the last five years, and had advanced causes that he cared about strongly, such as the environment, civil liberties, trade unionism, co-operative business and welfare. While his party was not the biggest on the national stage, he had managed to have much more of an effect on policy than the average MP due to his position.

He took his marked seat, near Senator Forsman for the Centre-Progressives, and got out a margherita pizza he'd just bought from the pizza takeaway just outside the chamber.

Marius looked up from his notes and smiled warmly to the like-minded early Parliamentarian, who with a quick glance was identified as Sven Sköldsvik, the engineer behind Republic. The explicit socialist roots of that party had prevented much real electoral cooperation with C-P, though Marius had personal sympathies with some of the man's ideas, and they could at least agree easily on Sköldsvik's flagship issue, ejecting the Swedish Crown from this sovereign nation, once and for all.

Marius leaned over, and offered his hand. "Mr. Sköldsvik, congratulations on your election. I look forward to working with you this term."

“Thank you, congratulations to you too. I look forward to working with your party as well.” Sköldsvik responded. While they did not share much common ground in terms of economics, he was definitely an ally when it came to supporting the establishment of a republic in St Hilda.

Sköldsvik gestured towards the box of pizza now sitting on his lap. “You want a slice?” he asked.

Marius couldn't exactly turn down a free slice, and grinned as he graciously accepted one. "I'll have to spot you one next time."

Turning to the doors, Marius wondered when Parliament would end up starting session today. It was always a little less regular just after an election.

Lisa Forss carried her light blue legal pad in her left hand and the black pen in her right. This was the first time she entered the Parliament Chamber, and she took a good look around on the seats in the room, seemingly more comfortable than she had expected, and the two men sharing a pizza. She recognized them as Marius Forsman and Sven Sköldsvik, MP's from different two parties, and decided to greet the two of them. She moved slowly across the chamber, hearing the end of their conversation.

"Gentlemen, are we celebrating our election?"

She first looked at Forsman, a member of the C-P. His party was aligned at the center of the political spectrum, much like The Greens, but it was more profiled on the status of the Monarchy and derived its core voters from farmers, historically. He was therefore not a political opponent, but rather, a potential political friend.

Sköldsvik's Party, Republic, was profiled against the Monarchy, much like the C-P. Forss had no problem with socialists, and was thankful for their support for green politics in general, and therefore saw them as a potential member of the government coalition she hoped would control the chamber in the years to come.

Salomon entered the chamber, excited to be involved in the government of the new nation. He wanted to make sure it wasn't just white people at the table, as it had been for many years. He spotted Marius Forsman, Sven Skoldsvik, and Lisa Forss all grouped together. Two of them might be leftists, but Forsman was a good man with a good reputation. And he could talk to Skoldsvik about republicanism, even if the man was a zealot about it, and Salomon knew the value of preserving the environment, even if he wasn't willing to go as far as Forss.

He took up a seat near the three of them and pulled out the container with curry goat in it that his wife had packed him for lunch. He took a second to inhale the delicious aroma, then turned to his three colleagues and asked, "Anybody want some curry goat to go with that pizza? My wife makes the best curry goat around."

Marius looked up and smiled, wiping the corners of his mouth and greeting the Green MP who had just entered. "I believe so, though of course you should be celebrating the most Mrs. Forss, welcome to Parliament. Finally, I have someone I can claim seniority on." Marius laughed lightly. "I respect what your movement is doing for our environment, it simply needs strong advocates. And I hear you managed to drag in a second constituency? Soon you'll be negotiating with the big players."

Salomon strolled in confidently, and entered the conversation. The man was maybe a little intense, but Marius could do nothing but respect his passion for fighting for racial equality. And a free snack never hurt. Marius gladly leaned over and accepted some of Salomon's meal. "I have to say, I agree with your assertion. You must send my compliments to your wife."

A brisk air flowed as Anders Ehnström walked into the chamber. He had just won reelection, but his party as a whole had lost 2 of it members in recent elections. The spirit of the festive enviorment rose him from the stresses of party leadership, party realignment, studying new campaign tactics, the usual. He hoped that as the soul remaining reprasentative of the party he founded.

Anders usually space put him near the group of Marius, Sköldsvik, and Forss. The others he didn't recognize off hand, maybe a few encounters in the past sessions but nothing that stuck out to him.

"Is it alright if I take a seat?" He asked to the group.

Sköldsvik smiled at Salomon as he sat down, yet politely declined the curry goat. While he was sure that it was delicious, he did not really eat much meat. He welcomed the other two senators that had sat down, Ms Forss of the Greens and Mr Ehnström of the Liberal Alliance. He definitely did not see eye-to-eye with the latter on the issues of economics, but when it came to Sköldsvik's other core issues of republicanism, environmentalism and civil liberties they had much common ground. Ms Forss was definitely a colleague in those issues too, and they were both known as the "single-issue" MPs, due to their in-the-name focuses on republicanism and environmentalism. As a bipartisan gesture to start the session, he offered them a slice of pizza.

Ljungstrand takes a seat in the chamber, saving two seats to the right of her for her colleagues. She pulls some papers out of her briefcast and lays them out on the desk in front of her.

Alexander Norberg strolls into the chamber, surprisingly the first right-wing MP to do so. He greets his colleagues and takes a seat to himself, putting some distance between himself and the leftists and liberals. Norberg puts his pen and paper on his desk and begins eating a bag of Chex Mix.

Salomon smiled politely at Skoldsvik and grinned at Marius. "Glad you like it."

When Anders Ehnstrom entered the chamber, looking for a seat, Salomon said, "Go right ahead, sir. Glad to see that we're going to have a man of your caliber helping our nation's economy."

After sitting for a bit, eating and giving himself some time to digest and chat with the people around him, he excused himself and headed over towards Alexander Norberg. He hadn't met the man, but he knew he was a fellow conservative, and that was good. He sat down near Norberg and introduced himself. "Salomon Kombila Berggren, how do you do, sir?"

Salomon smiled politely at Skoldsvik and grinned at Marius. "Glad you like it."

When Anders Ehnstrom entered the chamber, looking for a seat, Salomon said, "Go right ahead, sir. Glad to see that we're going to have a man of your caliber helping our nation's economy."

After sitting for a bit, eating and giving himself some time to digest and chat with the people around him, he excused himself and headed over towards Alexander Norberg. Alexander realizes he forgot Berggren was also conservative. "I'm good, how are you? I look forward to working with you."

He sees Alexander inviting him to come over and proceeded to take seat and join him. "Greetings. You must be Alexander Norberg the NPP party leader."

"Indeed. Pleased to be working with you." Alexander glances at the door. "I hope our missing colleagues show up soon so we can get started."

[The Liberated Territories]

Sara Nygaard had entered the corridor of the parliament building, carrying her purse by her side and taking in her surroundings. The parliament was rather large for such a small country, or so the Swedish born St. Hildan thought. She flicked her blonde hair to the side as she glanced at two men eating a pizza with another man, and another mixed gender group to the left. Her seat was closer to the former, so she took a seat next to them and smiled at them.

Robin entered the chamber with a smile on his face. He took his seat and looked across the aisle and saw other anxious MPs ready to start the session. He was ready to work for his country.

Heinz Buckliger strode past the guards next to the main entryway to the Parliament Building with pride. Dressed in a grey suit with a green tie, he adjusted the small Fatherland Front pin and the rosette reserved for the nobility on his lapel as he headed towards the main chamber. Taking his seat in the small room, he leaned over towards a few faces he'd recognized from the research he'd done earlier.

"Good morning Senators Norberg, Ehnstrom, and Berggren. My name's Heinz. It's a pleasure to be your colleague. Who's ready to do some legislating? I have some ideas for the economy and how to help create jobs in this country. What do you want to do while you're in this chamber?"

Dorgival R. Seč entered the room, his suit impeccable as always. Looking upon the mass of Parliamentarians, he nodded his head once in respect towards them before pulling out a notebook and walking towards the group. “Ladies, Gentlemen.” “I am pleased to see so many people working for the good of the citizenry.”

As Alexander (a black man himself) waits, he reads over Buckliger's bill in disgust. He ignores the man's greetings and immediately knows any chance of a coalition with the PFNS is gone.
