Hi there! So, I’m a newbie to NFL and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a classic game for a first time football virgin to watch. Preferably something violent and dramatic with a good back story. I was raised in a household where boxing was the only sport that mattered so I’m finding it hard getting into a team sport. I don’t even have a local team to root for. Any advice you guys could give would be appreciated.

Since you like boxing, I'd suggest checking out the Bounty Bowl. The whole thing plays out almost like a boxing match, you might appreciate that.

Considering his other top option was Baltimore, I'm pretty okay with this development.

I think Cleveland would’ve been the best move. Sounds like it was more of a location based thing for him though. I have my doubts about the Ravens this year, and Carolina’s always a playoff shot, but McCoy would’ve given the Browns enough talent on the defensive line to challenge Houston for the #1 unit up front. Plus that team’s oozing with talent.

Reportedly, Baltimore was offering close to 16 mil, and Cleveland was between the two. I don’t think I could say no to that much more money plus a decidedly better football team.

Not even close. Weddle lost a step so they lost him. Upgraded there with the new Earl of Baltimore. Hated to see CJ (but why break the bank) Mosely go but his understudy is much much better than you think.

Matt Judon and probably Jaylon Ferguson team up to crash the backfield. If there is a drop off it will be offset by offensive improvement. These guys will dominate time of possession. Big help to the defense.

Then you think the opposite would be a positive? Gimme a break. I actually expect a competitive team like most seasons (barring excessive injuries which are the leading causation of disappointing seasons from the Ravens).

The Baltimore Ravens are a class organization with excellent coaches and ownership. No worries. As to you, you can keep that Debbie Downer attitude for your own self.

Time of possession can be very overrated, but against teams who’s offenses are very much centered around explosive plays and quick scoring, that’s where it comes in handy. (Think the Chiefs, Rams, or Bears, or the old Peyton Manning teams). Keeping teams like that out of rhythm is essential if you want a chance to drag them down, because otherwise you just won’t be able to keep up.

I'm speaking from experience. The Mike Munchak Tennessee Titans taught me that "time of possession" as your main strength is a path to disappointment. Munchak wasn't a bad coach, nearly getting us to the playoffs in 2011 with a raw QB prospect in Jake Locker and a run-first offense. Our problem, though, and what eventually lead to 2 straight losing seasons and his firing, was that a run-first TOP team has to have two things to succeed: Nothing less than flawless red zone offense, and the fortune to never trail by more than 2 scores.

With the type of style your Ravens are going to play, they're a high-floor, low-ceiling squad. You probably won't lose more than 8 games, but you probably won't win more than 8 either. The good news is that the Giants won two Superbowls with that type of squad, so if you do make the wildcard, you have a chance at a deep playoff run.
