Polytheism Versus Monotheism

Postby The Multiversal Species Alliance » Sun May 26, 2019 9:55 am

Hello all, what are y’alls thoughts on polytheism vs. monotheism?
I personally find polytheism a better fit for me because it helps me to better connect with nature and accept that I am a part of the natural order rather than somehow above it, seeing that I was raised Christian with the whole human dominionism aspect informing my view of nature.

I’m personally an atheist, so I don’t follow or abide by monotheistic nor polytheistic teachings. However, I am a sympathiser in regards to pre-Christian European paganism, such as Norse and the Roman pagan faith. I - perhaps foolishly and optimistically - hope to see the old faiths become widespread in their native lands at the expense of Christendom and Islam.

So, I suppose I support polytheism. However, only because I see the old faiths as ethnic religions that should be preserved and empowered.

I don't disagree. I actually like the Ancient Roman Polytheism better than Christianity, despite being raised Catholic.

I'm not very religious 98% of the time, but when I do pray (either in a very ornate church, or on a very fast funfair ride when I genuinely fear I might die on it) I'm Christian. But I have nothing against polytheism.

The thing about polytheism is that it can be hard to take the gods seriously.
Just look at all the times Hera threw a hissy fit because Zeus knocked up some random mortal in Greek mythology.
Plus all the other ridiculous issues the gods had with each other.

I think that the question is ultimately irrelevant because polytheism and monotheism don't mean anything on their own, and lots of religions have a mixture of both in them (such as Hinduism and Buddhism). If you think that polytheism is cooler than monotheism, that's a fair aesthetic preference, but it doesn't mean much in terms of ethics, metaphysics, or other values which are much more important.

I can’t take the Greek gods seriously, and don’t even get me started on how ridiculous ancient Norse mythology was. It’s much easier to convince me of the biblical god that bearded vikings running around the clouds shooting thunderbolts and having a soap opera with someone cheating on someone else every month

Staunch monotheist. The polytheistic religions are interesting to study, but for me that's about it. As far as I'm concerned, I believe there to only be one God who I will worship, the Christian one.

I will admit that I do enjoy pagan æsthetics more than Christian or monotheist ones, but that isn’t my sole reason. I personally approve of ethnic religions, especially in regards to Europe and the Europeans.

That, and I somewhat scorn Christianity for its destruction of native pagan faiths.

While Atheist I find Polytheism much more fascinating than monotheism. I mean come one. I mean Norse mythology is basically a giant metal fight party and it is just amazing.
