So nothing short of banks sinking will make people give a shit. Just great.

or just care about every species instead of being so selfish, Amazing concept i know. Thinking like this makes me wish dinosaurs never went extinct

Why should we care about every species? Is every species of the utmost importance to their ecosystem and humanity as a whole?

Why are you being so selfish? Who needs the Amazon? Lets cut it down for farmland or wood.
who needs birds? What purpose do they serve?
Sometime in the near distant future:
Child: Grandpa/Grandma what are birds and fish?
Grandpa/Grandma: Birds were creatures who flew in the sky and made nests in trees, sang beautiful songs and came in many sizes ands colors but we destroyed their homes to build cookie cutter housing. Fish swam in the ocean and came in many shapes and sizing but due to demand for food we oversfished and made them go extinct but i didnt care then nor did others. I’m sorry for the terrible world you inherited. I wish things could have been different for you.”

Now, what problem does the extinction of an obscure rodent on an island pose to the rest of the world?

Birds don't sing beautiful songs. They make annoying chirping noises.

Well, for starters, without worms, soil fertility wouldn't be as good due to the lack of nutrients being spread, therefore, meaning that the crops wouldn't be as easy to grow and therefore, along with the lack of meat, there would be quite a huge famine crisis. In addition, ants recycle the nutrients found in the soil which is vital for plants to grow and they actually increase the yield of wheat, crops, coffee and even chocolate. Also, without bees, we certainly wouldn't exist(yes, even Albert Einstein remarked this), as they actually produce quite a lot of food. In addition, a lot of crops are VERY reliant on pollination(which bees tend to do). Also, every species has a role to play in its surrounding ecosystem and environment. So, therefore, without non-human species, we would all be doomed no matter what.San Lumen wrote:Trees are objectively beneficial for nearly every living being on this planet. And, in addition, trees actually PRODUCE oxygen and breath in carbon dioxide, and if deforestation continues at this rate, then there would be less trees to get rid of the carbon dioxide. Oh, and they actually produce medicine too which can help combat a variety of illnesses.

food for other species perhaps. What purpose to rhinos, hippos, elephants or hawks serve?

I agree. Environmentalism will start to really catch on once environmentalidtd start focusing on the practical benefits to preserving nature rather as opposed to capitalizing on kneejerk emotional responses.San Lumen wrote:food for other species perhaps. They were unlikely an important food source given how fragile their species as a while was. Otherwise, they’d have gone extinct a while ago.
You know, by pointing out how some species serve no purpose but providing you opportunities to grandstand, you’re not doing those species any favors

So in other words if they dont benefit us who cares if they go extinct? Thinking like this makes me agree with Thanos in Infinity War. Humans are destroying this planet and by the time people realize it it will be too late.

Destroying the planet will harm us. Until we manage to perfect space travel and terraforming, we’re stuck on this rock. So it’s in our best interest to make it last as long as we can.
Focus on that and you might get somewhere in the wider debate.
