American English or British English?

Postby Aeritai » Tue May 21, 2019 6:56 am

Decided to make a interesting topic about the two Englishes now before you say "Both Englishes are the same" they are not since American English and British English spell their words differently.

Here are some examples from both Englishes.

British Examples: Aeroplane, aluminium, chips, and colour.

American Examples: Airplane, aluminum, french fries and color.

With these differences in mind I ask you which one is better to use for writing and grammar? If you say British then should Americans learn it as well?

In my opinion I think both are great I mean there is no reason to hate both Englishes. I think the only reason why we have two Englishes is because of culture when America gained its independence I think they wanted their own identity and be different than the British like with the words Aeroplane and chips. But I do think Americans should learn how to spell British words like colour and aluminium since the British were the ones that set up the English language.

What do you say NSG? Do you prefer American or British English? And should Americans use British spelling in their writing?

We have considerably more than 'two Englishes'.

There's Indian English, Australian English, South African English, various shades of Caribbean English, Canadian English, etc., etc. Even within the United Kingdom, you can find more differences between, say, East Anglian English and Scots English than between standard British English and American English.

I'm having a hard time trying to understand why this should be an issue.
Capitalism, single-payer healthcare, pro-choice, LGBT rights, progressive personal taxation, low corporate tax, pro-business law, welfare for those in need.
Nazism, edgism, dogmatic statements, most of Abrahamic-derived morality (esp. as law), welfare for those not in need.

Not really a issue, but it is a interesting discussion to talk about the differences in these two englishes and the other ones Arch mentioned.

I don't speak either accent. Well at least I try desperately to not be assimilated by American English, kinda hard when you live around lots of American Southerns.

Though I do use the British spelling.

British English, on the grounds that more people use it than the American system.

I prefer US English, especially for speech. I have a hard time understanding British English because I'm not regularly exposed to British media.

No need for any nationality to change their specific brand of World English. For example, let Americans retain their distinctive spelling.

American English spellings actually exist because of spelling reform and it is a great demonstration of why spelling reform is doomed to fail... if they stick all they do is add complexity rather than reduce it.

American English as a dialect exists simply because languages are geographically informed. British English... which is much more misleading than American English (really should be saying Englishes in both cases)... exists likewise. The differences are much more fundamental than mere spellings... the word "table" actually has the opposite meaning!

British Present formally for discussion or consideration at a meeting.

US Postpone consideration of.

I've always wondered if this extends to the expression "put it on the table" which obviously means "we'll talk about it presently".

Obviously British spellings are aesthetically superior but both dialects are equally obviously inferior. Speak sexy English.

But to go back to Dunglish... apparently my father was in the US with a couple of mates and he was asked to explain what they, in their native NZ English accents, were saying in his second-language Dutch accented English.

I've also seen clips of NZers being subtitled by American news programmes. Whether or not these were legit clips is a question that I cannot answer.

What about Canadian English or Scottish English? Canada's English sounds just like America's, And the Scottish English is hardly understandable to Americans.

Saying British English is like saying Chinese food in China. It's just food.

There's different dishes of course but it's just food.

To distinguish from English then, sure, add American or Australian or shortern to Singlish.

Having said that do people say Mexican Spanish, or Colombian Spanish or do they simply speak Spanish with variations.

Also, are there other clear distinctions such as Dutch and Afrikaans?

Ansr plz.

The various South-American Spanish dialects are almost unintelligible to my ears, which are more used to actual Castellano.

Speak Singlish... lah.

Jokes aside, I am fine and flexible with both. Though as a non-native speaker, I will always find myself mixing all kinds of English in my posts or the way I text and talk.

So one moment I will realise, then another moment I realized that I am using another form of English.
